However, Leerink Partners analyst Mani Foroohar sees things differently. Foroohar and Leerink have stuck by their sell rating and $85 price target on the company as it's soared. If Moderna were to fall back to $85, it would shed 81% of its value.
\n
On one hand, Moderna has been practically unstoppable, thanks to the successful development of mRNA-1273, one of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccines to receive emergency-use authorization in the United States. In late-stage clinical studies released last November, Moderna's two-dose regimen of mRNA-1273 led to a vaccine efficacy (VE) of 94.1%. Even though recent studies have shown that VE wanes over time, the initial VE offered by mRNA-1273 has made it one of the two most-popular inoculation options in developed markets.
\n
Also working in Moderna's favor is the possibility that COVID-19 vaccines could become a recurring/seasonal thing. Even if Moderna's vaccine remains toward the top end in terms of efficacy, the sheer volume of doses that need to be administered globally will open the door to other successful drugmakers.
\n
While Leerink's price target is potentially too aggressive to the downside, Moderna does have a lot to prove with a $181 billion market cap and only one marketed drug.
\n
Now-former CEO Steve Burns standing next to a prototype of the Endurance all-electric. pickup. But Wall Street isn't too keen on one EV manufacturer, in particular: Lordstown Motors (NASDAQ:RIDE).
\n
According to analyst Joseph Spak at RBC Capital, Lordstown is worthy of an underperform rating and a $1 price target. If this price target becomes a reality, Lordstown's shares will have fallen 84%.
\n
Whereas there was both a clear bull and bear argument to share about Moderna above, the same can't be said of Lordstown Motors. It's been nothing short of a disaster.
\n
In March, a number of allegations were levied against the company by short-side firm Hindenburg Research. Although a number of these allegations proved to be without merit, a committee formed by Lordstown's independent directors found that the company had exaggerated the number of pre-orders of its Endurance EV pickup. Both Lordstown's CEO Steve Burns and CFO Julio Rodriguez resigned in the wake of these findings.
\n
To make matters worse, Lordstown Motors may not have enough capital to survive the next year. Lordstown will probably see Endurance deliveries to customers commence in the second quarter of 2022, which doesn't exactly align with the idea put forward by the company that production would begin in September.
\n
With few avenues to raise cash and lukewarm demand for Endurance, a $1 price target may even prove too generous.
\n
\n
AMC Entertainment: Implied downside of 98%
\n
And then there was meme stock kingpin AMC Entertainment (NYSE:AMC). On the other end of the spectrum, Alan Gould at Loop Capital foresees AMC eventually heading back to $1 a share. That would be a decline of 98%, for those of you keeping score at home.
\n
The reason AMC has shot out of a cannon and pushed well beyond Wall Street's collective price targets is the unwavering support of retail investors who believe it'll undergo another short squeeze. This is a very short-term event whereby pessimists who are betting against a stock (i.e., short-sellers) run for the exit at the same time. Since short-sellers have to buy shares to cover their short positions, it can cause a rising stock price to briefly go parabolic.
\n
But as Gould and other analysts have noted with AMC, the numbers don't add up. While it's impossible to pinpoint when emotion will stop being the driving force behind AMC, the operating performance of a company and its balance sheet always dictate the long-term price performance of a company's stock. The internet was new, and an investor frenzy bid up stocks that had anything to do with the worldwide web. Eventually, the bubble burst and most of the frenzied stocks are no longer around today.
\n
A similar craze with electric vehicles (EVs) has occurred; electric vehicle company Rivian may IPO at a larger valuation than Ford Motor Company without delivering a single vehicle! But just like the internet, electric vehicles are coming, and some great companies are leading the charge; here are three of them.
\n
1. The dominant electric vehicle company
\n
Tesla, led by CEO Elon Musk, brought electric vehicles into the mainstream discussion in 2012 when the Model S launched. The rest of the automotive industry watched Tesla's deliveries grow from 22,442 vehicles in 2013 to 499,535 in 2020; now, the entire industry is racing to bring competitive electric vehicles to market.
\n
\n
The company has an enormous first-mover advantage in the United States market, with an estimated 71% market share of electric vehicles. In 2020, Tesla models represented 79% of new electric vehicle registrations in the U.S.
\n
Electric car stocks are entering the picture, such as Rivian,Lordstown Motors, and Lucid Motors; plus, legacy automotive manufacturers are bringing EV models into their lineups. But many of these competitors still need to prove their success, while Tesla remains the face of electric vehicle technology. It remains the safest investment in an emerging space until a competitor manages to take meaningful market share from them.
\n
2. The largest charging network
\n
Charging stations are an important, yet often forgotten, aspect of the electric vehicle market. Tesla has famously invested in its own charging network, but most automotive manufacturers are not doing so, leaving EV drivers in need of a network of chargers to support their travel needs.
\n
ChargePoint Holdings is the dominant charging network in North America, with more than 118,000 active stations and seven times as much market share as its closest competitor. The company has more than 5,000 customers that choose ChargePoint to bring EV charging to their premises, including businesses, fleets, resorts, and residences.
\n
There is a clear political push for electric vehicles and ESG (environmental, social, and governance) standards that companies are striving for, so the tailwinds are there for consumers to continue gravitating toward EVs. This will directly benefit ChargePoint, whose software and service segments will generate recurring revenue as its charging network grows.
\n
3. A potential disruptor of the battery business
\n
Whereas the engine is the critical component of the gas-powered vehicle, the battery is the heart of the EV. QuantumScape is a battery technology company working to bring a new type of EV battery to market.
\n
QuantumScape's battery is a solid-state lithium-metal battery, which is more energy-dense than traditional lithium-ion batteries, and the company claims it can be charged faster and last longer. The company also has more than 200 patents and applications pending, giving QuantumScape legal protection if the battery is as effective as it hopes it is.
\n
However, the battery is still in development, meaning the company is essentially \"pre-revenue\" and a riskier investment than both Tesla and ChargePoint. Furthermore, the commercialization of the battery is still several years away, with management expecting testing to begin in 2023 and a full launch in 2025. Investors should be aware that QuantumScape doesn't yet have a product and that buying the stock is a bet that promises turn into real results in the future.
\n
Here's the bottom line
\n
The automotive industry is collectively worth more than $2 trillion and could someday be fully electric. The opportunity for huge returns is there for investors, just like the internet in its earliest days. But just like the dot-com boom, investors need to be careful to identify the leaders of EV technology and not get caught up with the pretenders that never amount to much.
\n
With Tesla, ChargePoint, and QuantumScape, investors have exposure to EVs, the infrastructure beneath them, and a high-upside leap forward in battery technology. The internet was new, and an investor frenzy bid up stocks that had anything to do with the worldwide web. Eventually, the bubble burst and most of the frenzied stocks are no longer around today.\nA similar craze with electric vehicles (EVs) has occurred; electric vehicle company Rivian may IPO at a larger valuation than Ford Motor Company without delivering a single vehicle! But just like the internet, electric vehicles are coming, and some great companies are leading the charge; here are three of them.\n1. The dominant electric vehicle company\nTesla, led by CEO Elon Musk, brought electric vehicles into the mainstream discussion in 2012 when the Model S launched. The rest of the automotive industry watched Tesla's deliveries grow from 22,442 vehicles in 2013 to 499,535 in 2020; now, the entire industry is racing to bring competitive electric vehicles to market.\nImage source: Getty Images.\nThe company has an enormous first-mover advantage in the United States market, with an estimated 71% market share of electric vehicles. In 2020, Tesla models represented 79% of new electric vehicle registrations in the U.S.\nElectric car stocks are entering the picture, such as Rivian,Lordstown Motors, and Lucid Motors; plus, legacy automotive manufacturers are bringing EV models into their lineups. But many of these competitors still need to prove their success, while Tesla remains the face of electric vehicle technology. It remains the safest investment in an emerging space until a competitor manages to take meaningful market share from them.\n2. The largest charging network\nCharging stations are an important, yet often forgotten, aspect of the electric vehicle market. Tesla has famously invested in its own charging network, but most automotive manufacturers are not doing so, leaving EV drivers in need of a network of chargers to support their travel needs.\nChargePoint Holdings is the dominant charging network in North America, with more than 118,000 active stations and seven times as much market share as its closest competitor. The company has more than 5,000 customers that choose ChargePoint to bring EV charging to their premises, including businesses, fleets, resorts, and residences.\nThere is a clear political push for electric vehicles and ESG (environmental, social, and governance) standards that companies are striving for, so the tailwinds are there for consumers to continue gravitating toward EVs. This will directly benefit ChargePoint, whose software and service segments will generate recurring revenue as its charging network grows.\n3. A potential disruptor of the battery business\nWhereas the engine is the critical component of the gas-powered vehicle, the battery is the heart of the EV. QuantumScape is a battery technology company working to bring a new type of EV battery to market.\nQuantumScape's battery is a solid-state lithium-metal battery, which is more energy-dense than traditional lithium-ion batteries, and the company claims it can be charged faster and last longer. The company also has more than 200 patents and applications pending, giving QuantumScape legal protection if the battery is as effective as it hopes it is.\nHowever, the battery is still in development, meaning the company is essentially \"pre-revenue\" and a riskier investment than both Tesla and ChargePoint. Furthermore, the commercialization of the battery is still several years away, with management expecting testing to begin in 2023 and a full launch in 2025. Investors should be aware that QuantumScape doesn't yet have a product and that buying the stock is a bet that promises turn into real results in the future.\nHere's the bottom line\nThe automotive industry is collectively worth more than $2 trillion and could someday be fully electric. The opportunity for huge returns is there for investors, just like the internet in its earliest days. But just like the dot-com boom, investors need to be careful to identify the leaders of EV technology and not get caught up with the pretenders that never amount to much.\nWith Tesla, ChargePoint, and QuantumScape, investors have exposure to EVs, the infrastructure beneath them, and a high-upside leap forward in battery technology. These are potentially impactful companies that could end up being the titans of an electric automotive industry over the long haul.\nBut just like the internet in its early days, electric vehicles are a new industry with elevated risk. Tesla has proven the most of these three companies, but all three, to a degree, are pricing in the future success that the underlying businesses haven't yet delivered on. Investors can benefit from these stocks but will need to remain vigilant in seeing that the management teams behind each come through on their promises.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":29,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":802495918,"gmtCreate":1627793530034,"gmtModify":1703495983877,"author":{"id":"3586145401912378","authorId":"3586145401912378","name":"FollWin","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8519c8db9252abe3b637d4d01b75e54c","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3586145401912378","authorIdStr":"3586145401912378"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Tesla stock price may soar up.","listText":"Tesla stock price may soar up.","text":"Tesla stock price may soar up.","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":7,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/802495918","repostId":"1169518272","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1169518272","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1627784595,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1169518272?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-08-01 10:23","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Telsa Short Squeeze? Short sellers have always liked TSLA stock. But it takes more than just a large amount of short interest to trigger a short squeeze.
\n
The most important factor when it comes to a short squeeze isn’t total short interest.
\n
Anatomy of a Short Squeeze
\n
It’s short percent of float. A company’s total number of existing shares are its shares outstanding. However, a significant portion of those shares outstanding are typically held by large institutional investors and company insiders. On a standard day in the market, big institutions and company executives aren’t trading millions of dollars of stock.
\n
Everyone familiar with the basics of a free market knows that price is typically determined by market supply and demand. In the stock market, the number of shares of stock is the supply side of the equation. If company insiders and institutions aren’t selling, their shares aren’t available to contribute to the available market supply.
\n
A company’s “float” represents the total shares not held by company insiders or institutions. In a practical sense, it represents the effective supply of shares available to trade freely on the market.
\n
A short squeeze is triggered in part when there is not enough supply of shares to meet demand. That dynamic sends a stock’s share price soaring. And that soaring share price triggers short sellers to cover their positions by buying stock. The more short sellers cover, the bigger the losses remaining short sellers endure.
\n
At some point, the positive feedback loop hits the point of no return and the stock takes off to the moon.
\n
Short percent of float is calculated by taking the total short interest and dividing by the total float. It’s a crude estimate of just how explosive a short squeeze could be if all the short sellers are forced to cover all at once.
\n
TSLA Stock vs. GameStop
\n
According toOrtex Analytics, TSLA stock recently had a total short interest of about 32.36 million shares. At a share price of about $645, short sellers were betting $20.87 billion against TSLA stock.
\n
GameStop recently had about 8 million shares held short, according to Ortex. At a share price of $169, that means GameStop’s total short interest was about $1.35 billion.
\n
So how is it that GME stock experienced the mother of all short squeezes back in January? Meanwhile, TSLA stock is down 4.7% year-to-date.
\n
GameStop’s short percent of float recently was about 13.3%. Any number over 10% is relatively high, but it’s nothing crazy for a company like GameStop that is struggling so badly. Tesla’s short percent of float is currently just 4.1%, which is certainly nothing extraordinary.
\n
Back on Jan. 15, GameStop’s short percent of float was an eye-popping 107.7%. That extremely high short interest coupled with the flood of Reddit traders buying the stock is the reason GME stock skyrocketed from under $20 to as high as $483 in just a couple of weeks. It was a classic short squeeze.
\n
Since that time, GameStop’s short interest and short percent of float plummeted. It’s no coincidence the stock has dropped back below $165 as well.
\n
What Does This Mean for Tesla?
\n
Yes, short sellers are betting $20.87 billion against Tesla, which is a massive amount of money. But Tesla is a $620 billion company with a huge float. It’s highly unlikely there will ever be the type of supply shortage in TSLA stock that triggered the AMC and GameStop short squeezes earlier this year.
\n
TSLA stock is not a great short squeeze candidate. Tesla is a story stock. It trades higher or lower based on the story that CEO Elon Musk and other Tesla enthusiasts spread about the company’s potential to completely take over the global auto, energy, technology and transportation industries in the long-term.
\n
When chapters get added to the story, the stock goes higher. Musk is an excellent storyteller, and he has legions of followers willing to listen to anything he says.
\n
Byalmost everyobjective fundamental valuation metric, TSLA stock is extremely overvalued. In fact, price may be one of the least useful research data available.
\n
Of course, you may want to know what is driving a big change in the stock price. Type a company's ticker symbol or name into the search field on MarketWatch.com to get the stock page (also called a ticker page) and look under the \"overview\" tab for reports from MarketWatch and other Dow Jones publication as well as company news releases and reports from some other contributors.
\n
But to become a smarter investor, you need to look at both the stock price and the underlying metrics used to evaluate a company and stock against both peers and over time.
\n
One way to do that is by using an \"advanced\" or \"interactive\" chart, which can be found on the MarketWatch quote page. The charts can extend the time viewed to more than 10 years, and can overlay, or provide in a lower chart, a number of technical or fundamental metrics. It also lets you compare the moves to other stocks and indexes.
\n
Here are 10 things more important than price that are available to investors, listed in alphabetical order:
\n
52-week high and low
\n
A stock's 52-week high or low is a price range that helps an investor see where the stock is trading relative to how it has traded over the past year. It can be found under the \"overview\" tab in a quote page.
\n
Although some might view a stock trading closer to its low over the past year as relatively cheap, Art Hogan, chief market strategist at National Securities Corp., said he would prefer to invest in a stock that is trading closer to its 52-week high than its 52-week low.
\n
\"I'm not looking at what the market is getting wrong, I'm looking at what the market is getting right,\" Hogan said. \"It's near its high for a reason.\"
\n
Analysts' estimates for EPS and revenue
\n
Michael O'Rourke, chief market strategist at JonesTrading, likes to check the change in analyst expectations for full-year earnings per share and revenue, as that can provide a view on how Wall Street perceives the underlying strength of a company's business.
\n
Those and more can be found under the \"analyst estimates\" tab on a quote page.
\n
A look at the yearly numbers shows the EPS estimates for the current year as well as for the next two years, as compiled by FactSet, in both table form and as a chart. The page also shows how what a company reported on a quarterly basis compared with the average analyst EPS estimate, overall analyst ratings of a company and how the ratings have changed over the past three months, and the average stock price target and notable changes in ratings and targets.
\n
For example, Facebook Inc.'s (FB) full-year EPS was expected to keep growing at a steady rate as of the start of the third quarter of 2021, and its reported quarterly EPS beat expectations in the previous four quarters.
\n
Facebook Inc. MARKETWATCH
\n
Competitors
\n
It's smart to compare a company's financial performance against its competitors when assessing its financial performance. Scroll to the bottom of the \"overview\" page to find that list -- companies in the same business and in some cases others in a similar broadly defined sector and within the same market-capitalization tier.
\n
Dividend yield
\n
Also on the \"overview\" page is the dividend yield, or the annual dividend rate per share divided by the stock price. It is best viewed relative to a company's peers, the broader stock market and the yield on the 10-year Treasury note.
\n
For example, Microsoft Corp.'s dividend yield as of the end of August 2021 was a little over half that of the S&P 500 and the 10-year Treasury yield. However, the yield is above that of Apple Inc., the only other company with a larger market cap, and above the yield of the SPDR Technology Select Sector exchange-traded fund.
\n
MARKETWATCH, BIGCHARTS
\n
To see if the company has consistently paid a regular dividend, select \"dividend\" under the \"events\" tab.
\n
Free cash flow
\n
Free cash flow is the cash generated from operations after expenses and capital investments. The more cash available to a company, the more it can spend to expand. It can be found under the \"financials\" tab, then click on the secondary \"cash flow\" tab.
\n
How free cash flow changes over time is useful in judging the current strength of a company's business and its potential for growth, said Paul Nolte, portfolio manager at Kingsview Investment Management.
\n
The MarketWatch quote page provides a scale to see the change in free cash flow on an annual basis over the past five years or over the past five quarters.
\n
For example, free cash flow was a key metric analysts used to evaluate General Electric Co., as the company recovered from years of financial distress. The quote page shows how FCF turned positive in 2019 after being negative the previous three years and that it stayed positive in 2020.
\n
Gross profit margin
\n
Gross profit margin, and the change over time, is another important measure of a company's profitability. That can be found under the \"financials\" tab on a quote page.
\n
Gross profit margin is calculated by dividing gross income -- sales minus cost of goods sold (COGS) -- by sales. It should be viewed over time and relative to its peers.
\n
For example, the year-over-year growth rate for Microsoft's revenue has been higher than the COGS growth rate the past four years, which indicates that gross profit margin has improved in each of the past four years.
\n
Microsoft's 2020 gross profit margin also was more than double the S&P 500's implied gross profit margin and nearly double that of Apple and Amazon.com Inc.
\n
P/E ratio
\n
The price-to-earnings ratio, or P/E ratio, is one of the favorite metrics of JonesTrading's O'Rourke. It is the price of the stock divided by earnings per share, gives investors a way to see what they're paying for each $1 on a company's bottom line, and to compare that cost over time and with a company's peers.
\n
To find it, click on the \"profile\" tab in a stock's quote page.
\n
For example, Google parent Alphabet Inc.'s stock (GOOGL) may at first glance appear to be a bit rich, given that it has advanced at triple the pace of an already booming S&P 500 through the first eight months of 2021.
\n
In terms of P/E, Alphabet's could make the stock appear expensive, since it was about 6 percentage points above the implied P/E ratio for the S&P 500.
\n
But despite the big gain in the stock price, Alphabet's P/E had declined by more than 2 percentage points since the end of 2020 as earnings have increased at a faster rate than price. Looking at it compared against other technology companies, it was several percentage points below Microsoft's and a little more than half that of Amazon's but a little above Apple's P/E.
\n
To chart the P/E, go to \"advanced chart\" and then within the \"lower charts\" pull-down menu, select \"P/E Ratio.\"
\n
MARKETWATCH, BIGCHARTS
\n
Price-to-sales ratio
\n
Price relative to sales is similar to the P/E ratio, but because it is based on the top line rather than earnings per share, the ratio can't be influenced by a change in the number of shares outstanding from share repurchases.
\n
\"The higher you go up on the income statement, the harder it is [for a company] to mess around,\" said Kingsview's Nolte.
\n
Return on invested capital
\n
Return on invested capital is calculated by dividing net operating profit, after tax, by invested capital. It's way to judge how well a company's management allocates capital to generate a return. That can be found under the \"profile\" tab on a quote page.
\n
For example, Apple's ROIC was a few percentage points above the S&P 500's performance over the past 12 months, and nearly triple that of the 10-year Treasury yield.
\n
\"One of the most important [metrics I look at] is return on invested capital,\" National Securities' Hogan said. \"Anything more than 15% is spectacular.
\n
Short interest as a percent of float
\n
Short interest is the number of shares that have been bet by investors that the stock price will decline, while the percent of float is short interest divided by the number of shares publicly available for trade. That can be found under the \"overview\" tab.
\n
Short interest is a good way to gauge overall investors sentiment in a stock. It is often used as a contrarian indicator; the more short interest there is, the more shares that will have to be purchased to cover those shorts if prices rise enough for bears to abandon their bets or fall enough for bears to take profits.
\n
So a stock with a high relative short interest ratio and that is trading close to its 52-week high may have more potential for gains than a stock with a low short interest ratio trading near its 52-week low.
\n
There is also the potential of a \"short squeeze,\" for heavily shorted stocks, which include meme stocks AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc. and GameStop Corp.
\n
Keep going
\n
There is a lot more on stock quote pages that can be very helpful in sizing up a company:
\n
\n
Board of directors, under the “profile” tab, gives a quick view of people making decisions for the company.
\n
Look at liquidity ratios, also under the “profile” tab. The current ratio is a measure of a company’s ability to pay short-term debt obligations; the quick ratio, also known as the acid-test ratio, provides a look at assets easily convertible to cash; and the cash ratio depicts a company’s ability to use available cash to pay off short-term debt.
\n
Charts, under the “charts” tab, provide an easy way to gauge a stock’s performance over time. The charts allow investors to change the frequency and type of display, while adding many technical studies such as moving averages, relative strength, volume and news density.
\n
The “financials” tab includes a look at the income statement and balance sheet over a five-year period. It also provides a list of a companies filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
\n
A list of tradable stock option contracts can be found under the “options” tab, with all available maturities and strike prices, and prices for both bullish “call” options and bearish “put” options.
\n
Employee data under the “profile” tab includes the number of employees, revenue per employee and income per employee.
\n
Multiple valuation measures are under the “profile” tab, such as total debt to enterprise value, enterprise value to sales, price to Ebitda (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization), price to book ratio and price to cash flow ratio.
\n
The most recent insider transactions are under the “profile” tab.
\n
","source":"lsy1603348471595","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; The page also shows how what a company reported on a quarterly basis compared with the average analyst EPS estimate, overall analyst ratings of a company and how the ratings have changed over the past three months, and the average stock price target and notable changes in ratings and targets.\nFor example, Facebook Inc.'s (FB) full-year EPS was expected to keep growing at a steady rate as of the start of the third quarter of 2021, and its reported quarterly EPS beat expectations in the previous four quarters.\nFacebook Inc. MARKETWATCH\nCompetitors\nIt's smart to compare a company's financial performance against its competitors when assessing its financial performance. Scroll to the bottom of the \"overview\" page to find that list -- companies in the same business and in some cases others in a similar broadly defined sector and within the same market-capitalization tier.\nDividend yield\nAlso on the \"overview\" page is the dividend yield, or the annual dividend rate per share divided by the stock price. It is best viewed relative to a company's peers, the broader stock market and the yield on the 10-year Treasury note.\nFor example, Microsoft Corp.'s dividend yield as of the end of August 2021 was a little over half that of the S&P 500 and the 10-year Treasury yield. However, the yield is above that of Apple Inc., the only other company with a larger market cap, and above the yield of the SPDR Technology Select Sector exchange-traded fund.\nMARKETWATCH, BIGCHARTS\nTo see if the company has consistently paid a regular dividend, select \"dividend\" under the \"events\" tab.\nFree cash flow\nFree cash flow is the cash generated from operations after expenses and capital investments. The more cash available to a company, the more it can spend to expand. It can be found under the \"financials\" tab, then click on the secondary \"cash flow\" tab.\nHow free cash flow changes over time is useful in judging the current strength of a company's business and its potential for growth, said Paul Nolte, portfolio manager at Kingsview Investment Management.\nThe MarketWatch quote page provides a scale to see the change in free cash flow on an annual basis over the past five years or over the past five quarters.\nFor example, free cash flow was a key metric analysts used to evaluate General Electric Co., as the company recovered from years of financial distress. The quote page shows how FCF turned positive in 2019 after being negative the previous three years and that it stayed positive in 2020.\nGross profit margin\nGross profit margin, and the change over time, is another important measure of a company's profitability. That can be found under the \"financials\" tab on a quote page.\nGross profit margin is calculated by dividing gross income -- sales minus cost of goods sold (COGS) -- by sales. It should be viewed over time and relative to its peers.\nFor example, the year-over-year growth rate for Microsoft's revenue has been higher than the COGS growth rate the past four years, which indicates that gross profit margin has improved in each of the past four years.\nMicrosoft's 2020 gross profit margin also was more than double the S&P 500's implied gross profit margin and nearly double that of Apple and Amazon.com Inc.\nP/E ratio\nThe price-to-earnings ratio, or P/E ratio, is one of the favorite metrics of JonesTrading's O'Rourke. It is the price of the stock divided by earnings per share, gives investors a way to see what they're paying for each $1 on a company's bottom line, and to compare that cost over time and with a company's peers.\nTo find it, click on the \"profile\" tab in a stock's quote page.\nFor example, Google parent Alphabet Inc.'s stock (GOOGL) may at first glance appear to be a bit rich, given that it has advanced at triple the pace of an already booming S&P 500 through the first eight months of 2021.\nIn terms of P/E, Alphabet's could make the stock appear expensive, since it was about 6 percentage points above the implied P/E ratio for the S&P 500.\nBut despite the big gain in the stock price, Alphabet's P/E had declined by more than 2 percentage points since the end of 2020 as earnings have increased at a faster rate than price. Looking at it compared against other technology companies, it was several percentage points below Microsoft's and a little more than half that of Amazon's but a little above Apple's P/E.\nTo chart the P/E, go to \"advanced chart\" and then within the \"lower charts\" pull-down menu, select \"P/E Ratio.\"\nMARKETWATCH, BIGCHARTS\nPrice-to-sales ratio\nPrice relative to sales is similar to the P/E ratio, but because it is based on the top line rather than earnings per share, the ratio can't be influenced by a change in the number of shares outstanding from share repurchases.\n\"The higher you go up on the income statement, the harder it is [for a company] to mess around,\" said Kingsview's Nolte.\nReturn on invested capital\nReturn on invested capital is calculated by dividing net operating profit, after tax, by invested capital. It's way to judge how well a company's management allocates capital to generate a return. That can be found under the \"profile\" tab on a quote page.\nFor example, Apple's ROIC was a few percentage points above the S&P 500's performance over the past 12 months, and nearly triple that of the 10-year Treasury yield.\n\"One of the most important [metrics I look at] is return on invested capital,\" National Securities' Hogan said. \"Anything more than 15% is spectacular.\nShort interest as a percent of float\nShort interest is the number of shares that have been bet by investors that the stock price will decline, while the percent of float is short interest divided by the number of shares publicly available for trade. That can be found under the \"overview\" tab.\nShort interest is a good way to gauge overall investors sentiment in a stock. It is often used as a contrarian indicator; the more short interest there is, the more shares that will have to be purchased to cover those shorts if prices rise enough for bears to abandon their bets or fall enough for bears to take profits.\nSo a stock with a high relative short interest ratio and that is trading close to its 52-week high may have more potential for gains than a stock with a low short interest ratio trading near its 52-week low.\nThere is also the potential of a \"short squeeze,\" for heavily shorted stocks, which include meme stocks AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc. and GameStop Corp.\nKeep going\nThere is a lot more on stock quote pages that can be very helpful in sizing up a company:\n\nBoard of directors, under the “profile” tab, gives a quick view of people making decisions for the company.\nLook at liquidity ratios, also under the “profile” tab. The current ratio is a measure of a company’s ability to pay short-term debt obligations; the quick ratio, also known as the acid-test ratio, provides a look at assets easily convertible to cash; and the cash ratio depicts a company’s ability to use available cash to pay off short-term debt.\nCharts, under the “charts” tab, provide an easy way to gauge a stock’s performance over time. The charts allow investors to change the frequency and type of display, while adding many technical studies such as moving averages, relative strength, volume and news density.\nThe “financials” tab includes a look at the income statement and balance sheet over a five-year period. It also provides a list of a companies filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission.\nA list of tradable stock option contracts can be found under the “options” tab, with all available maturities and strike prices, and prices for both bullish “call” options and bearish “put” options.\nEmployee data under the “profile” tab includes the number of employees, revenue per employee and income per employee.\nMultiple valuation measures are under the “profile” tab, such as total debt to enterprise value, enterprise value to sales, price to Ebitda (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization), price to book ratio and price to cash flow ratio.\nThe most recent insider transactions are under the “profile” tab.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":134,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":152299639,"gmtCreate":1625293802721,"gmtModify":1703740135573,"author":{"id":"3586145401912378","authorId":"3586145401912378","name":"FollWin","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8519c8db9252abe3b637d4d01b75e54c","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3586145401912378","authorIdStr":"3586145401912378"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Oh.. New workers for the holiday shopping season will get $200, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the matter isn’t public. The payouts also will go to AppleCare and online sales workers as well.
\n
But the good tidings came with a bit of coal. In a separate memo, Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook criticized leaks to the press. Key details of Apple’s recent product launch event were reported ahead of time, along with information from a companywide meeting held last week.
\n
Cook said he’d heard from many employees who were “incredibly frustrated to see the contents of the meeting leak to reporters,” according to the memo, which was obtained by Bloomberg News. “This comes after a product launch in which most of the details of our announcements were also leaked to the press.”
\n
The memo sparked fresh concerns from some employees who feel that Apple’s policies are too restrictive. It’s also a potential distraction at a time when the company is focused on rolling out new iPhones and other devices. Preorders began for the iPhone 13 last week, and it reaches stores on Friday.
\n
The Sept. 14 launch event, which also included the new Apple Watch Series 7 and a redesigned iPad mini, kicked off the company’s holiday season blitz. This Christmas will provide a key test of Apple’s retail operations as the company navigates the waning of the pandemic.
\n
The bonuses will be an unusual perk since Apple rarely gives companywide payouts. The last major one was $2,500 worth of restricted stock units in 2018. That bonus followed tax changes allowing Apple to bring back cash from offshore accounts at a lower cost. New workers for the holiday shopping season will get $200, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the matter isn’t public. The payouts also will go to AppleCare and online sales workers as well.\nBut the good tidings came with a bit of coal. In a separate memo, Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook criticized leaks to the press. Key details of Apple’s recent product launch event were reported ahead of time, along with information from a companywide meeting held last week.\nCook said he’d heard from many employees who were “incredibly frustrated to see the contents of the meeting leak to reporters,” according to the memo, which was obtained by Bloomberg News. “This comes after a product launch in which most of the details of our announcements were also leaked to the press.”\nThe memo sparked fresh concerns from some employees who feel that Apple’s policies are too restrictive. It’s also a potential distraction at a time when the company is focused on rolling out new iPhones and other devices. Preorders began for the iPhone 13 last week, and it reaches stores on Friday.\nThe Sept. 14 launch event, which also included the new Apple Watch Series 7 and a redesigned iPad mini, kicked off the company’s holiday season blitz. This Christmas will provide a key test of Apple’s retail operations as the company navigates the waning of the pandemic.\nThe bonuses will be an unusual perk since Apple rarely gives companywide payouts. The last major one was $2,500 worth of restricted stock units in 2018. That bonus followed tax changes allowing Apple to bring back cash from offshore accounts at a lower cost. The new bonuses will be issued via cash in paychecks, rather than as stock units, the people said.\nA representative for Apple declined to comment.\nThe bonuses were presented to retail workers as a recognition of the difficulty working through the pandemic. Since Covid-19 struck in 2020, Apple stores around the world closed and reopened multiple times -- and thousands of workers were given online sales roles while physical locations were shuttered. Retail employees were still paid as normal when stores were closed.\nApple also is facing a tight market for labor, with employers across the U.S. struggling to attract enough staff.\nStill, some workers see the bonuses as an acknowledgment of growing unrest among both retail and corporate staff, according to the people. The latest software updates and enhancements are generally done for you as the client, allowing businesses to have the latest and greatest without additional effort or overhead. Additionally, SaaS enables businesses to shift capital expenses to operating expenses, allowing them to stretch budgets from an accounting perspective.
\n
Cloud computing refers to servers that are connected through the internet, as well as the software, data centers, and databases that create an online network. Leveraging \"the cloud\" allows users and businesses to consume and analyze data without having to manage databases or software on their own physical, on-premises servers and machines.
\n
Digital transformation, artificial intelligence (AI), cybersecurity, machine learning, centralized analytics, customer relationship management, enterprise resource planning (ERP), connected TV (CTV), streaming, work from anywhere, the gig economy, and other secular growth trends fuel SaaS and cloud infrastructure. But what are the best stocks to buy in order to ride these waves and boost your portfolio?
\n
I'll provide 10 total stocks over two articles and videos. Today, I will cover stocks 1 through 10.
\n
#10.salesforce.com (NYSE:CRM) is the leader in customer relationship management (CRM). Salesforce is a SaaS provider that enables organizations to integrate marketing, sales, service, e-commerce, and IT into a single customer view. Salesforce is acquiringSlack (NYSE:WORK), which has caused volatility in the stock. The leadership team has proven to shareholders many times that they can successfully acquire businesses and add value. I firmly believe that this acquisition will add tremendous value to Salesforce customers. The company plans to build Slack into its Service Cloud products, which will increase employee productivity from anywhere.
\n
#9.DocuSign(NASDAQ:DOCU) offers more than most people realize. Its business consists of four primary pillars -- manage, prepare, sign, and act -- which collectively are called the DocuSign Agreement Cloud. The company continues to expand offerings, and its recent earnings results prove it. For Q1 FY22, revenues grew 58% year over year to $469 million. Its billings also grew 54% year over year to $527 million with a 125% net dollar retention rate. The below video goes into more detail, breaking down the pillars and solutions.
\n
#8.Twilio (NYSE:TWLO) is often misunderstood. Sure, it helps companies like Uber and DoorDash connect customers to businesses, but what else does it do? Here is a list of solutions Twilio can offer:
\n
\n
Messaging: You can send and receive SMS, MMS, and OTT messages globally (to and from over 180 countries) and in a scalable manner. For example, Twilio can be used to created automated replies to customers and route important requests to humans for additional interaction.
\n
Customer engagement:Contact centers can leverage Twilio for customer engagement channels, and the tools can be quite complex. For example, Twilio offers AI-powered tools for customer self-service, automatic text notifications, callbacks, etc.
\n
Marketing:Campaigns can use Twilio to send specific, customizable messages with the ability to track data such as click-through rates.
\n
Business email services: Twilio can send and receive emails. Twilio SendGrid Email API allows businesses to create flexible, scalable, and engaging campaigns.
\n
\n
#7The Trade Desk (NASDAQ:TTD) focuses on the ad-tech space, and it has a tremendous total addressable market (TAM) when you consider the possibilities in CTV. CTV means \"connected TV,\" which is essentially any television connected to the internet. ThinkRoku (NASDAQ:ROKU), YouTube, part ofAlphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL),Amazon Prime (NASDAQ:AMZN),Disney's Disney+ (NYSE:DIS), and others. Smart TVs are changing the internet, and buying The Trade Desk is the best way to play this space, in my opinion. The company allows its clients to buy advertisements or run global marketing campaigns in areas such as CTV, display ads, and even social media. These are massive secular growth trends, and The Trade Desk can help your portfolio capture some of this growth.
\n
#6.Zoom Video (NASDAQ:ZM) is the epitome of a work-from-home stock, but can it be a large part of the work-from-anywhere movement that is here to stay? The answer, in my opinion, is yes. Zoom is now a verb, and recently Charlie Munger told CNBC that he's \"in love with Zoom\" and thinks it's \"here to stay.\" I agree with him, and the below video shares more details as to why.
\n
In case you missed the last article, I'll provide some background. Zscaler's global infrastructure brings internet gateways closer to users all around the world, creating a faster and more streamlined experience. Datadog brings information together from across an entire organization into a simple dashboard. Companies that leverage Datadog enjoy benefits such as improved user experience, faster resolutions to interruptions, and overall better business decisions.
\n
Datadog has continuously improved its product suite as well as its partnership network. In fact, Datadog recently announced a new partnership with Microsoft (NASDAQ:DDOG) Azure, which allows streamlined experiences for configuration, purchasing, and even managing Datadog inside the Azure portal. Additionally, on July 1 Datadog announced a partnership with Salesforce to provide real-time monitoring and threat detection across the Salesforce (NASDAQ:DDOG) platform.
\n
From a product perspective, here are the highlights:
\n
\n
Application performance monitoring (APM) provides visibility into application functionality and health.
\n
Infrastructure monitoring allows businesses to monitor IT infrastructure.
\n
Log management provides visualization and data for any performance problems.
\n
User experience monitoring includes both synthetics and real user monitoring (RUM).
\n
Network performance monitoring allows insights and analysis into network traffic flow from both hybrid and cloud environments.
\n
Incident management and continuous profiler improves workflows.
\n
Security monitoring provides threat detection.
\n
\n
#3. Snowflake (NYSE:SNOW) offers what it calls a \"data warehouse-as-a-service\" (DaaS), a cloud-based data storage and analytics solution. Interestingly, Snowflake is not a SaaS company since its revenues are over 90% consumption based. Snowflake reduces cost and improves agility. Its data platform is unique in that it is not built on an existing big data platform.
\n
As you may have heard around the time of the IPO, Snowflake is backed by Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE:BRK.A). Snowflake's clients include Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL), Nike (NYSE:NKE), Mastercard (NYSE:MA), and many others. In fact, it's one of the larger networks on the planet. Cloudflare enables a faster and more secure internet for anyone with an internet presence. Cloudflare has data centers across the globe, and it boasts an astonishing 25 million internet properties, a number that grows daily. To date, Cloudflare handles over 17 percent of the Fortune 1000 internet requests, and the company handles 25 million HTTP requests every second on average. Cloudflare is all about the future of the internet, and it belongs in my portfolio as a long-term investment.
\n
#1 Crowdstrike (NASDAQ:CRWD) is the leader in endpoint security.
