That’s got us looking at a few stocks on bankruptcy watch.

When it comes to investing, the dreaded “B-word” tends to evoke a strong reaction from investors. Suddenly, no one seems to want to own a now-toxic holding once the “bankruptcy” word starts getting tossed around.

It doesn’t help that common stockholders are one of the last priorities when it comes to getting paid out of bankruptcy proceedings. So, can they keep up the momentum? Let’s discuss, and dive deeper into these three stocks on bankruptcy watch this year.

Bed Bath & Beyond (BBBY)

At one point last year, it appeared there could be hope for Bed Bath & Beyond(NASDAQ: BBBY). The retailer generated surprisingly-strong free cash flow, while relatively new leadership under Mark Tritton gave investors hope.

While the first few quarters of Covid were bumpy for retailers, Bed Bath & Beyond began hitting its stride. After a couple of good quarters, the retailer started disappointing investors.

Despite a few short-lived “meme stock” short-squeezes, Bed Bath & Beyond stock has really struggled lately. Given how its business has progressed, that’s no surprise. The retailer is experiencing pressure on its top- and bottom-lines, while the company’s significant debt load continues to weigh on its balance sheet.

Bed Bath & Beyond recently missed an interest payment and is having trouble paying its vendors. Shortly before a recent capital raise, Bed Bath & Beyond even said bankruptcy protection was an option on the table. Thus, this is among the retailers I think is worth avoiding at all costs right now.

Carvana (CVNA)

Another mania stock that’s under tremendous pressure?Carvana(NYSE: CVNA).

Once dubbed the Amazon(NASDAQ: AMZN) of used cars, this name has struggled. Shares are down more than 92% from the company’s 52-week high, and have fallen roughly 97% from their all-time high.

When supply chain woes weighed on new car production (and thus new car sales), the value of used cars exploded. That propelled Carvana stock higher at the time. It helped that we were in the midst of an unchecked bull market with rampant speculation. However, as with a short-term sugar high, the whole thing has come crashing down.

Carvana has made it clear to investors that its business is struggling. As noted by Barron’s:

“And about that debt. Total liabilities at the end of September equated to almost $9.25 billion with just $666 million cash on hand. Not only that but diluted earnings per share in the 12 months prior was -$9.05.”

That’s a major problem for a company that has a market cap of just $2 billion and can’t turn a consistent profit. Oddly though, investors can’t stop buying the stock. Despite the recent pullback, shares are still up more than 200% from their recent low.

Canoo (GOEV)

Last but not least, we have Canoo(NASDAQ: GOEV). When the EV SPAC revolution exploded shortly after Covid, I had a bad feeling about how it would end. I didn’t know when it would end or how high these stocks would go, but the valuations simply didn’t make sense.

Many of these names were garnering multi-billion valuations without any revenue in sight. Some just had a concept to go on. That’s not really an improvement from the dot-com bust 20 years prior. Only instead of websites, it was EV stocks that were somehow going to displace the stronger, more experienced and wealthier automakers.

With Canoo specifically, total assets are currently about double liabilities. However, current liabilities to current assets are an issue. With just $40.4 million in cash on hand at last check, the company’s currently liabilities of $183 million look pretty daunting.

Negative free cash flow and (still) zero dollars in revenue isn’t helping matters. Not to mention a wave of executives and insiders hitting the exits. Indeed, the prospects here don’t look good right now for Canoo.

","source":"investorplace","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
3 Stocks to Put on Bankruptcy Watch in 2023
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n3 Stocks to Put on Bankruptcy Watch in 2023\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2023-02-22 11:59 GMT+8 InvestorPlace\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
In terms of stock market performance, 2023 has been strong, but certain companies are on bankruptcy watch.Bed Bath & Beyond(BBBY): Bankruptcy is on the table as it struggles to make interest payments ...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{"CVNA":"Carvana Co.","BBBY":"3B家居","GOEV":"Canoo Inc."},"source_url":"https://investorplace.com/2023/02/3-stocks-to-put-on-bankruptcy-watch-in-2023/","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/e9f99090a1c2ed51c021029395664489","article_id":"1193607990","content_text":"In terms of stock market performance, 2023 has been strong, but certain companies are on bankruptcy watch.Bed Bath & Beyond(BBBY): Bankruptcy is on the table as it struggles to make interest payments and pay its vendors.Carvana(CVNA): Has a bloated balance sheet, and the business faces a tough road ahead.Canoo(GOEV): Still isn’t producing revenue, and remains highly unprofitable.Given the pressures we’re seeing in many areas of the economy, it’s no surprise that businesses are feeling the heat. Meeting","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1153449029","media":"Tiger Newspress","summary":"(Reuters) - Warren Buffett on Saturday used the annual meeting of Berkshire Hathaway Inc to reveal ","content":"

(Reuters) - Warren Buffett on Saturday used the annual meeting of Berkshire Hathaway Inc to reveal major new investments including a bigger stake in Activision Blizzard Inc , while also railing against Wall Street excess and addressing the risks to his conglomerate of inflation and nuclear war.

The meeting in downtown Omaha, Nebraska was Berkshire's first welcoming shareholders since 2019, before COVID-19 derailed America's largest corporate gathering for two years.

It allowed shareholders to ask five hours of questions directly to Buffett and Vice Chairman Charlie Munger, and some questions to Vice Chairmen Greg Abel, who would become chief executive if Buffett could not serve, and Ajit Jain.

Buffett said Berkshire, long faulted for holding too much cash, boosted its combined stakes in oil company Chevron Corp and "Call of Duty" game maker Activision Blizzard Inc nearly six-fold to more than $31 billion.

Berkshire also said first-quarter operating profit was little changed at $7.04 billion, as many of its dozens of businesses withstood supply chain disruptions caused by COVID-19 variants, the Ukraine invasion and rising costs from inflation.

Buffett, 91, said it "really feels good" to address shareholders in person, after holding the last two meetings without them. Attendees included JPMorgan Chase & Co (JPM.N) Chief Executive Jamie Dimon and the actor Bill Murray.

Buffett had in his annual shareholder letter in February bemoaned the lack of investment opportunities.

That prompted a shareholder to ask what changed in March, when Berkshire bought 14.6% of Occidental Petroleum Corp (OXY.N) and agreed to buy insurer Alleghany Corp for $11.6 billion.

Buffett said it was simple: he turned to Occidental after reading an analyst report, and to Alleghany after its chief executive, who once led Berkshire's General Re business, wrote to him.

"Markets do crazy things, and occasionally Berkshire gets a chance to do something," he said. "It's not because we're smart.... I think we're sane."

Berkshire spent $51 billion on equities in the quarter, and its cash stake sank more than $40 billion to $106 billion.

But the conglomerate has many cash-generating resources, including its insurance operations, and Buffett assured that reserves won't run dry.

"We will always have a lot of cash," he said. "It's like oxygen, it's there all the time but if it disappears for a few minutes, it's all over."

Buffett and Jain stumbled for answers when asked about whether the Ukraine conflict could degenerate into nuclear war.

Jain, who has drawn Buffett's praise for decades, said he had a "lack of ability" to estimate Berkshire's insurance exposure.

Buffett added that there was a "very, very, very low" risk of a nuclear attack, though the world had "come close" during the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis.

"The world is flipping a coin every day," Buffett said. "Berkshire does not have an answer."

Buffett also picked on a favored target in saying stock markets sometimes resembled a casino or gambling partner.

"That existed to an extraordinary degree in the last couple of years, encouraged by Wall Street," he said.

For his part, Munger, 98, echoed Nancy Reagan in criticizing bitcoin, saying that if an advisor suggested you put your retirement account there, "just say no."

He and Buffett munched their familiar candies from See's, which Berkshire owns, and drank soda from Coca-Cola, a big Berkshire investment, at the meeting.

Abel defended Berkshire's BNSF railroad, saying there was "more to be done" to improve operations and customer service, and compete against rival Union Pacific Corp .

Buffett also said Berkshire is designed to assure shareholders that the company and its business culture will survive his and Munger's departures.

"Berkshire is built forever," he said.

Shareholders also rejected proposals requiring Berkshire to disclose more about how its businesses promote diversity and address climate risks, and install an independent chairman to replace Buffett in that role.

Buffett has run Berkshire since 1965, and Mario Gabelli, chairman of Gamco Advisors and a prominent Berkshire investor, opposed ending his chairmanship.

"It's not inappropriate for companies to look at separating the chair and CEO," he said. "It doesn't make sense in the case of Berkshire Hathaway because this guy has done a fantastic job for 50 years. We like the idea, but not here."

Thousands of people massed outside the downtown arena housing the meeting before doors opened at 7 a.m. (1200 GMT).

Berkshire had projected lower attendance than in 2019, and about 10% to 15% of seats in the normally-full arena were empty.

As at other Berkshire-sponsored events this weekend, nearly all attendees did not wear masks, though all needed proof of COVID-19 vaccination. CNBC.com webcast the meeting.

"I bought a chair from Walmart so I could sit down," said Tom Spain, founder of Henry Spain Investment Services in Market Harborough, England, who arrived at 3:15 a.m. for his third meeting. "Everyone has been using it. Now, a number of names that jumped in last year’s meme surge are in the green today as well.

What’s going on in the markets?

Well, Ryan Cohen’s purchase has seemingly added bullish momentum to the once down-trodden GME stock. After this week’s purchase, the executive now owns nearly 12% of the video game retailer. Cohen tweeted the news out Tuesday night, simply stating, “I put my money where my mouth is.”

Today, GME stock is trending up more than 14% on a very strong week for the company. GameStop is up more than 50% so far this week, jumping around 30% on Tuesday alone. That makes this week its biggest jump since March 2021.

If you recall, Cohen — the founder of Chewy(NYSE:CHWY) — joined GameStop’s board last year with a mission to revitalize the dwindling retailer. GameStop has seen its revenue slow as gamers shift to downloading games instead of buying physical discs, which the company specializes in. Now, working to turn itself around, GME has been less than transparent about current projects. Many investors are interested in a potential non-fungible token (NFT) marketplace operated by GameStop. Rumors about the project have swirled over the past few months.

Today, GameStop isn’t the only meme stock in the green, however.

Meme Stocks Surge on GameStop Bull Run

It seems that Cohen’s purchase this week has ushered in an across-the-board jump for a number of meme stocks. GameStop, AMC (NYSE:AMC), Koss (NASDAQ:KOSS) and Sundial Growers (NASDAQ:SNDL) are all in the green today. These were some of the biggest names caught up in the meme-stock boom last year.

While GME stock rules the day, AMC and Sundial investors should also be pleased by the recent gains. Today, AMC stock and SNDL stock are up 14% and 4% respectively, likely on hopes this month will bring yet another surge. KOSS stock is up nearly 4% as well.

Indeed, companies like GameStop saw huge surges around this same time last year. Retail investors on Reddit’sr/WallStreetBets subreddit collaborated to lift a number of names they considered undervalued, bringing the “meme stock craze” to fruition. Now, a number of names that jumped in last year’s meme surge are in the green today as well. What’s going on in the markets?Well, Ryan Cohen’s purchase has seemingly added bullish momentum to the once down-trodden GME stock. After this week’s purchase, the executive now owns nearly 12% of the video game retailer. Cohen tweeted the news out Tuesday night, simply stating, “I put my money where my mouth is.”Today, GME stock is trending up more than 14% on a very strong week for the company. GameStop is up more than 50% so far this week, jumping around 30% on Tuesday alone. That makes this week its biggest jump since March 2021.If you recall, Cohen — the founder of Chewy(NYSE:CHWY) — joined GameStop’s board last year with a mission to revitalize the dwindling retailer. Rumors about the project have swirled over the past few months.Today, GameStop isn’t the only meme stock in the green, however.Meme Stocks Surge on GameStop Bull RunIt seems that Cohen’s purchase this week has ushered in an across-the-board jump for a number of meme stocks. KOSS stock is up nearly 4% as well.Indeed, companies like GameStop saw huge surges around this same time last year. Retail investors on Reddit’sr/WallStreetBets subreddit collaborated to lift a number of names they considered undervalued, bringing the “meme stock craze” to fruition. While GME’s jump this week is a ways away from last year’s highs, investors are clearly still hopeful for another comeback.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":78,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":816608865,"gmtCreate":1630492039357,"gmtModify":1676530318715,"author":{"id":"3586229488061125","authorId":"3586229488061125","name":"RIC","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/40f79c31af5e7623d32535c3123b12c2","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3586229488061125","authorIdStr":"3586229488061125"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Vinco Ventures, Inc.(BBIG)$come on babe you can do it. Down by 23% since January, the index has been under consistent pressure this year as multiple factors (inflation, interest rate increases, the war in Ukraine) have been making investors nervous about the future of the economy.

Although the near term looks challenging for many businesses, there are some great stocks to buy and hold for the long term. Both drugmaker AstraZeneca (AZN) and tech giant Apple (AAPL) are in good shape to weather the current conditions and generate strong results for investors from here on out.

1. AstraZeneca

AstraZeneca is a top oncology company, and that can make it a relatively resilient business to invest in today. Cancer care is ongoing and doesn't stop for a recession or inflation.

In its first-quarter results, for the period ending March 31, oncology sales rose 21% year over year to $3.6 billion. As good as that looks, there's more growth on the way. The company has a potential blockbuster cancer drug in Enhertu, which has been effective in treating breast cancer for patients with both high and low levels of HER2, a key protein. Analysts project the drug's peak revenue could top $6.6 billion.

The company's other major segments -- cardiovascular, renal, and metabolism -- generated $2.2 billion in sales and rose by 14% in Q1. With more than 180 projects in its pipeline spanning multiple therapeutic areas, there's no shortage of opportunities for the business to build on the strong results it is generating today.

In addition to its solid growth prospects, the stock also pays a dividend yield of 2.4%. That's higher than the S&P 500 average of 1.4% and can help bolster your overall returns. Shares of the company are also trading at a reasonable 15 times future earnings, which is in line with the average healthcare stock in the Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund.

AstraZeneca's modest valuation can lessen the risk of a steep decline in a bear market. And thus far, a sell-off hasn't been happening. With year-to-date gains of around 5%, the stock has been one of the better investments to be holding this year.

2. Apple

Another solid growth stock to buy and hold is Apple. A favorite of Warren Buffett, the company was once referred to by the billionaire investor as "probably the best business I know in the world."

It's a hard statement to argue with given that despite its high-priced products, which often retail for more than $1,000, the company continues to generate growth. That strong brand loyalty could make Apple one of the better-performing growth stocks to own, even during a recession. In the second quarter of fiscal 2022, Apple's revenue topped $97.3 billion for the period ended March 26 and rose 9% year over year.

Although its dividend yield is fairly modest at just 0.7%, the company rewards investors through its buybacks and the share appreciation they will likely profit from in the long term. Over the trailing 12 months, Apple has reported free cash flow of $105.8 billion. And of that total, it spent $85.8 billion on share repurchases plus $14.7 billion on dividend payments.

Shares of Apple are down 26% this year, but that's likely due to the broad correction that's happening in the markets right now as opposed to anything the business is doing wrong. Apple's cash-rich operations make it one of the safer tech stocks to own today, and buying it on the dip could be a great move for long-term investors.

","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
2 Safe Stocks to Buy in This Bear Market
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n2 Safe Stocks to Buy in This Bear Market\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2022-06-23 23:28 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
A bear market officially got underway this month as the S&P 500 continued to fall in value. what he found helps to solidify the bull-case.“We noted broadening traction among government agencies, beyond Defense and into agencies like the Department of Veterans Affairs and Department of Energy,” said the 5-star analyst. “We expect this to drive 10-20%+ annual USG growth for the next few years.”Spanning across agencies including the Army, Navy, Air Force, and U.S. Special Operations Command, the Department of Defense (DoD) still represents the biggest revenue generator, with Twigg estimating the segment accounts for between 50%-77% of Palantir’s U.S. government revenue.Given the DOD’s requested discretionary budgets are anticipated to rise by 5% in FY2022 and by 4% in FY2023, Twigg thinks the “high DOD exposure could be a positive” for the business. What’s more, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine could act as a “catalyst” for the DOD to upgrade its technologies and be ready for any “future potential conflicts.”But as noted above, Palantir has gained a foothold in other departments too.For example, in 2020, the company’s U.S. government revenue rose by 91% year-over-year to $474 million from $248 million. However, at the same time, revenue generated from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) increased by 892%, from ~$6.4 million in 2019 to ~$56.9 million, with the segment accounting for 12% of 2020 USG revenue compared to 3% in 2019. As such, Health and Human Services takes second place in the revenue generating ranks, with the Department of Homeland Security, Treasury, Veterans Affairs, Department of Energy, and Department of Justice following behind. So, promising for Palantir’s USG business, but what are the implications for investors? Twigg’s rating stays an Overweight (i.e. Buy), yet the price target is nudged higher – from $15 to $16. Should the analyst’s thesis go according to plan, investors will be sitting on one-year returns of 32%. Twigg is one of the Street’s PLTR bulls, but most remain skeptics; the stock’s Hold consensus rating is based on 5 Holds, 3 Buys and 1 Sell. However, going by the $15.06 average price target, the stock is anticipated to climb 24% higher over the coming year.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":202,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9058278804,"gmtCreate":1654853392909,"gmtModify":1676535523243,"author":{"id":"3586229488061125","authorId":"3586229488061125","name":"RIC","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/40f79c31af5e7623d32535c3123b12c2","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3586229488061125","authorIdStr":"3586229488061125"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Tiger Brokers(TIGR)$Your Birthday, your 1st quarter ER and your share gets shorted badly. Just billionaire things. As highlighted by the Whole Mars Catalog - a semi-parodical and comedic account seemingly dedicated to Mars colonisation and trolling - a number of texts exchanged between Musk and Gates appear to reveal how the former snubbed the fellow billionaire. The most frustrating part is that the Microsoft founder apparently reached out to the Tesla CEO regarding \"philanthropy possibilities\", but the latter turned it down due to Gates' short position on his company. The one time we'd actually want them working together...As you can see, the pair are discussing the stock price of both Space X and Tesla when Musk asks, \"Do you still have a half a billion short position against Tesla?\", at which point Gates confirms he hasn't yet \"closed it out\".Put in the simplest terms, a short-term position or 'shorting' is when a trader sells a security (i.e. a stock or bond) first with the intention of repurchasing it or covering it later at a lower price - essentially betting against a company and banking on its value dropping to the investor's benefit.Verified by Musk himself, it would seem the messages are indeed authentic and although he says he did not leak them - suggesting \"friends of friends\" got hold of them at the New York Times - he does suggest that he believed Gates was trying to short him by \"half a billion\".Although it is unclear when the texts were originally sent, what this does highlight is how two of the world's richest men - who actually made money during the pandemic - apparently spurned the opportunity to do valuable philanthropic work over what looks like an increasingly petty business feud.In fact, circling back to the New York Times, the outlet recently published a piece detailing how the world is \"at the whim\" of billionaires like Musk, Gates, Jeff Bezosand so on.Homi Kharas, a senior fellow at Brookings think-tank, argues that “for the first time in history, a small group of private individuals could, if they so choose, materially impact global development at a scale that has previously been the near-exclusive domain of governments” — the rub being that they habitually fall short of this mark.Following the minor feud was dug back up, Musk responded in his usual fashion: by tweeting a meme mocking Gates before joking that the post was being reviewed by the \"shadow ban council\".Safe to say that despite once joking the pair were close but weren't \"lovers\", the relationship between the two tech giants has soured over time. The median estimate in a Bloomberg survey of economists called for a slight decrease to 335,000 new applications.
\n
Continuing claims for state benefits fell to 2.78 million in the week ended Aug. 28.
\n
Initial claims have declined steadily as vaccination progress and reopenings have increased demand for workers. The median estimate in a Bloomberg survey of economists called for a slight decrease to 335,000 new applications.\nContinuing claims for state benefits fell to 2.78 million in the week ended Aug. 28.\nInitial claims have declined steadily as vaccination progress and reopenings have increased demand for workers. Still, claims are higher than pre-pandemic levels, and economists expect economic growth to slow in the third quarter as stimulus spending moderates.\nThe recent surge in Covid-19 infections risks interrupting a steady recovery in the labor market, especially if outbreaks prompt school districts to reconsider in-person schooling.\nUnadjusted initial claims in Missouri, Georgia and New York saw the biggest decreases last week. Claims rose by more than 7,200 in Louisiana, one of the states hit hardest by Hurricane Ida last week. The storm caused deaths, damage and massive power outages as it passed through the eastern U.S.\nFederal pandemic unemployment benefits ended by Sept. 6 in all states. The White House has said it will not extend jobless aid further, but states can use pandemic relief funds to provide additional assistance to unemployed workers.\nClaims for pandemic unemployment assistance fell by more than 6,000 as the program is phased out.\nThe data follow last week’s employment report, which showed U.S. hiring downshiftedabruptlyin August with the smallest jobs gain in seven months.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":32,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":815790856,"gmtCreate":1630717738575,"gmtModify":1676530382632,"author":{"id":"3586229488061125","authorId":"3586229488061125","name":"RIC","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/40f79c31af5e7623d32535c3123b12c2","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3586229488061125","authorIdStr":"3586229488061125"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"great","listText":"great","text":"great","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":6,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/815790856","repostId":"1196145266","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1196145266","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1630682902,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1196145266?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-09-03 23:28","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Katapult stock pops after KeyBanc suggests potential for Amazon partnership","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1196145266","media":"seekingalpha","summary":"Katapult Holdings(NASDAQ:KPLT)shares are up over 16% after a KeyBanc Capital Markets research notes ","content":"
\n
Katapult Holdings(NASDAQ:KPLT)shares are up over 16% after a KeyBanc Capital Markets research notes suggests the potential for an Amazon(NASDAQ:AMZN)partnership in the future.
\n
Late last year, Affirm(NASDAQ:AFRM)announced the integration of Katapult into Affirm Connect, the application for customers who don't receive approval for Affirm payments.
\n
Earlier this week, Affirm announced a new partnership with Amazon that allows customers tomake monthly payments on purchases over $50.
\n
\"Although Amazon is not currently testing Affirm Connect, it may do so in the near future,\" writes KeyBanc analyst Bradley Thomas.
\n
The Affirm tie-in increases the likelihood that Katapult and other rent-to-own providers will get an opportunity for Amazon's business, says Thomas.
\n
Recent news: Last month, Katapult shares fell after the company reported asurprise second-quarter loss.
\n
","source":"seekingalpha","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html;
