There was a period when Civil engr were hot when construction sector was booming then we have the electrical n electronic engr due to high tech manufacturing in Semicond industry. Subsequently , the biotech were in demand when we lured the the big pharma firm and bio-related research firms here. Finally, the spur of tech engr when social media like FB n Amazon, eBay etc flood the scene. Now that they are so many platforms (social and retail), the pie is being divided. The growth for tech personals will have to slow down... Talking about trends and fads...

That’s why so many mutual funds lag behind their indices.</p>\n<p>So when you find a fund with a great record, it pays to investigate what the fund managers are doing — to learn some lessons.</p>\n<p>The American Century Focused Dynamic Growth FundACFSXfits the bill. The $2.8 billion fund beats its Russell 1000 Growth&nbsp;Index by over 6 percentage points annualized over the past three and five years, according toMorningstar. It outperforms its large-growth category by 8.6 percentage points annualized over five years. It has a reasonable 0.65% expense ratio.</p>\n<p>The fund is co-managed by Prabha Ram, who I recently caught up with. Raised in India, Ram came to the U.S. as a teaching assistant at the University of Maine, where she earned a master’s degree in computer science. She went on to receive an MBA at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. Ram and three other portfolio managers have led this fund since 2016.</p>\n<p>Here are the five key takeaways, with examples of specific stocks.</p>\n<p><b>1. Own companies that can “land and expand” in big markets</b></p>\n<p>Even though we’ve been in the digital age for years, many small companies still do much of their business on paper. Bill.comBILLwants to change that. The company was founded by CEO René Lacerte, who in the late 1990s started the online payroll company PayCycle, which was acquired by Intuit.</p>\n<p>Bill.com helps small companies go digital in accounts payable and receivable payments. But that’s just the start. Once inside a company, Bill.com digitizes other areas like cash and expense account management.</p>\n<p>Bill.com “lands and expands” at clients, but it also uses their business partners to create a network of leads.</p>\n<p>“Every vendor is a network member, even if it is not a Bill.com customer,” says Ram. This network has about 2.5 million members. Bill.com also gets prospects from its partners, including Bank of AmericaBAC,JPMorgan ChaseJPMand American ExpressAXP.Sales grew 45% in the first quarter.</p>\n<p>Founder-run companies such as this one are worth considering because they often outperform.</p>\n<p><b>2. Seek out innovators</b></p>\n<p>Ram’s portfolio contains obvious innovators, including TeslaTSLA,Amazon.comAMZNand AlphabetGOOGL,her top three positions. Let’s look beyond technology — to beer.</p>\n<p>Back in the 1980s, Boston Beer founder Jim Koch began taking share from beer giants Anheuser-Busch InBevBUDand HeinekenHEINYby rolling out successful “craft” brews, starting with Samuel Adams. Koch helped invent the craft brew category, essentially taking the country back to pre-Prohibition days when the U.S. had hundreds of regional breweries making more flavorful beers for local tastes.</p>\n<p>Boston Beer stock did very well, but then it stalled during 2015-2017 as beer sales overall went flat. In response, Boston Beer helped put a new category on the map — with its Truly Hard Seltzer brand rolled out in 2106. It remains one of the leading hard seltzers.</p>\n<p>“We were drawn to the company because of its history of innovation,” says Ram, referring to her fund’s early position from the second quarter of 2016. “The stock was doing poorly because the beer market was flattening, but they were coming up with Truly Hard Seltzer. Truly was more successful than we anticipated. It created a new category.”</p>\n<p>This penchant for innovation at Boston Beer has helped keep Ram’s fund in the name. Other successful Boston Beer brands include Twisted Tea, Angry Orchard and Dogfish Head.</p>\n<p>A key takeaway here is that to find innovative companies, look for the ones led by people who have demonstrated a knack for innovation in the past. Innovative managers tend to keep on innovating. Boston Beer continually tests new seltzers, beers, hard ciders, distilled spirits and other drinks. Shareholders are betting they will come through again.</p>\n<p>They’ll need the help. Boston Beer shares fell 20% on July 23 because so many competitors entered the hard cider niche. Sales grew 33% but net income fell 1.6% as the company jacked up advertising costs to try to combat the competition. The company slashed estimates for the year on an expected slowdown in sales growth.</p>\n<p>But don’t count out this innovator yet.</p>\n<p>“We recently announced plans to develop new innovative beverages with&nbsp;Beam Suntory&nbsp;that we are planning to launch in early 2022,” Boston Beer’s Koch said. Beam Suntory&nbsp;sells Jim Beam whiskey and other brands of spirits. “We believe these new beverages will further demonstrate our ability to innovate and grow our business as drinker preferences evolve.”</p>\n<p><b>3. Look for companies that can create and dominate a niche</b></p>\n<p>For years as the gig economy emerged, the big credit card companies didn’t really care that much if the local yoga instructor could accept payments with a credit card. SquareSQrecognized this as an opportunity. So it launched its card payment device business in 2009. Since then, it has grown by taking on larger customers, and expanding into new lines of business in financial services such as cash management, debit cards loans and tax filing. Transaction-based revenue grew 27% in the first quarter, and subscription and services revenue soared 88%.</p>\n<p>This is a great example of a company that created a business niche. But it’s also a “land and expand” company because it grows by offering customers new services. Both qualities help companies maintain the competitive advantage Ram likes see in investments.</p>\n<p><b>4. Buy companies in the early stages of rapid growth</b></p>\n<p>One way to find these is to identify companies developing products that will transform an entire industry. Ram thinks that is the case with Alnylam PharmaceuticalsALNY.It’s developing novel therapies base on a technique called RNA interference (RNAi). Inside the body, messenger RNA (mRNA) encodes proteins we need, based on signals from RNA. Sometimes mRNA gets the signals crossed, and it encodes flawed proteins. It has a reasonable 0.65% expense ratio.\nThe fund is co-managed by Prabha Ram, who I recently caught up with. Raised in India, Ram came to the U.S. as a teaching assistant at the University of Maine, where she earned a master’s degree in computer science. She went on to receive an MBA at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. Ram and three other portfolio managers have led this fund since 2016.\nHere are the five key takeaways, with examples of specific stocks.\n1. Own companies that can “land and expand” in big markets\nEven though we’ve been in the digital age for years, many small companies still do much of their business on paper. Bill.comBILLwants to change that. The company was founded by CEO René Lacerte, who in the late 1990s started the online payroll company PayCycle, which was acquired by Intuit.\nBill.com helps small companies go digital in accounts payable and receivable payments. But that’s just the start. Once inside a company, Bill.com digitizes other areas like cash and expense account management.\nBill.com “lands and expands” at clients, but it also uses their business partners to create a network of leads.\n“Every vendor is a network member, even if it is not a Bill.com customer,” says Ram. This network has about 2.5 million members. Bill.com also gets prospects from its partners, including Bank of AmericaBAC,JPMorgan ChaseJPMand American ExpressAXP.Sales grew 45% in the first quarter.\nFounder-run companies such as this one are worth considering because they often outperform.\n2. Seek out innovators\nRam’s portfolio contains obvious innovators, including TeslaTSLA,Amazon.comAMZNand AlphabetGOOGL,her top three positions. Let’s look beyond technology — to beer.\nBack in the 1980s, Boston Beer founder Jim Koch began taking share from beer giants Anheuser-Busch InBevBUDand HeinekenHEINYby rolling out successful “craft” brews, starting with Samuel Adams. Koch helped invent the craft brew category, essentially taking the country back to pre-Prohibition days when the U.S. had hundreds of regional breweries making more flavorful beers for local tastes.\nBoston Beer stock did very well, but then it stalled during 2015-2017 as beer sales overall went flat. In response, Boston Beer helped put a new category on the map — with its Truly Hard Seltzer brand rolled out in 2106. It remains one of the leading hard seltzers.\n“We were drawn to the company because of its history of innovation,” says Ram, referring to her fund’s early position from the second quarter of 2016. “The stock was doing poorly because the beer market was flattening, but they were coming up with Truly Hard Seltzer. Truly was more successful than we anticipated. It created a new category.”\nThis penchant for innovation at Boston Beer has helped keep Ram’s fund in the name. Other successful Boston Beer brands include Twisted Tea, Angry Orchard and Dogfish Head.\nA key takeaway here is that to find innovative companies, look for the ones led by people who have demonstrated a knack for innovation in the past. Innovative managers tend to keep on innovating. Boston Beer continually tests new seltzers, beers, hard ciders, distilled spirits and other drinks. Shareholders are betting they will come through again.\nThey’ll need the help. Boston Beer shares fell 20% on July 23 because so many competitors entered the hard cider niche. Sales grew 33% but net income fell 1.6% as the company jacked up advertising costs to try to combat the competition. The company slashed estimates for the year on an expected slowdown in sales growth.\nBut don’t count out this innovator yet.\n“We recently announced plans to develop new innovative beverages with Beam Suntory that we are planning to launch in early 2022,” Boston Beer’s Koch said. Beam Suntory sells Jim Beam whiskey and other brands of spirits. “We believe these new beverages will further demonstrate our ability to innovate and grow our business as drinker preferences evolve.”\n3. Look for companies that can create and dominate a niche\nFor years as the gig economy emerged, the big credit card companies didn’t really care that much if the local yoga instructor could accept payments with a credit card. SquareSQrecognized this as an opportunity. So it launched its card payment device business in 2009. Since then, it has grown by taking on larger customers, and expanding into new lines of business in financial services such as cash management, debit cards loans and tax filing. Transaction-based revenue grew 27% in the first quarter, and subscription and services revenue soared 88%.\nThis is a great example of a company that created a business niche. But it’s also a “land and expand” company because it grows by offering customers new services. Both qualities help companies maintain the competitive advantage Ram likes see in investments.\n4. Buy companies in the early stages of rapid growth\nOne way to find these is to identify companies developing products that will transform an entire industry. Chief Executive Andy Jassy; HP Inc. announcing cuts over the next three years; and a report that Google is considering thousands of layoffs — that there will be more to come.</p><p>By comparison, about 65,000 tech jobs were lost each year in 2008 and 2009 during the recession, according to Challenger, Gray &amp; Christmas. Whether all the slashing will approach levels only previously seen during the dot-com bust, when almost 300,000 tech jobs were lost over two years, remains to be seen.</p><p>Some longtime Silicon Valley observers and experts say this downturn is not like the dot-com bust of 2001 and 2002, because many of the companies that failed back then weren’t “real” companies. And though their estimates of how long this bust will last vary, they mostly agree that the impact will be significant and affect workers and others who power the industry.</p><p>This time around, the companies making cuts may have grown too quickly or added too many employees during the pandemic and may need to reset or go back to normal, experts say. But they offer real goods or services, and they have revenue coming in.</p><p><b>For more: Here are the tech companies that have announced layoffs</b></p><p>“The dot-com bust was primarily, if not exclusively, companies that had no customers and no revenues,” said Stephen Levy, director and senior economist of the Center for Continuing Study of the California Economy. “The companies that are laying off, like Amazon, or freezing hiring, like Google or Apple have millions and millions of customers and are profitable,” he added.</p><p>This tech downturn is not a surprise to others like Levy, who have lived through previous ones. Their forecasts range from cautious optimism to calamitous.</p><p>“Silicon Valley has cycles,” said Russell Hancock, CEO of Joint Venture Silicon Valley. “We go up, we go down. It happens with regularity about every 10 years.” Hancock, who said he thought it was too early to say “the sky is falling,” added that he thought the beginning of the pandemic would spark the downturn. Instead, he said, “the pandemic turned out to be bonanza for tech… but it just turned out to be a spike and didn’t lead us to a new plateau. Now, demand is tapering.”</p><p>But Tom Siebel, a billionaire serial entrepreneur whose latest title is CEO of C3.ai is more pessimistic. “This is just starting,” he told MarketWatch. “Before this is over, everyone will feel the sting, large companies and small. It will be hard, but the industry will be healthy once we get through it.”</p><p>“All this weird, entitled behavior is coming to an end. No more people working in pajamas at home, being paid in bitcoin. This era will be a zinger, unfortunately,” he said. The downturn, he cautioned, will last at least two years and “look like something out of the 1970s. This recession took 15 years to happen. Companies were literally printing billions of dollars a month. It was not sustainable or real.”</p><p>To further put the numbers in perspective:</p><ul><li>Today’s tech job cuts are also approaching the number of jobs lost in the industry when the COVID-19 pandemic upended everything. In 2020, 83,000 people in the tech industry lost their jobs, according to Challenger, Gray &amp; Christmas.</li><li>The 60,000-plus jobs lost this year is getting close to the equivalent of the number of U.S. tech jobs added by Silicon Valley’s biggest tech companies from 2020 to 2021, which was 68,558, according to an analysis of hiring data by the Silicon Valley Institute for Regional Studies.</li></ul><p>Some companies making job cuts have their own reasons and circumstances — but most of them have been affected by declining stock prices this year. The dramatic slashing of the staff of Twitter has everything to do with Elon Musk taking the helm, but before he bought the company its stock had traded as much as 73% lower than the $54.20 he paid per share. The slowdown in real estate activity is affecting related, fairly young companies. Yet other companies, such as ride-hailing giant Lyft Inc. have been under pressure to prove they can turn a profit.</p><p>“These are scary times: A lot of tech companies have not been through a downturn,” Scott Russell, an SAP executive board member, told MarketWatch. “The mantra for nearly all of them the next few years is risk mitigation, controlled costs and operational efficiency,” he added. Some companies already started doing those things at the beginning of the pandemic. Others, such as Facebook parent Meta Platforms Inc. almost doubled their size in the past couple of years, and CEO Mark Zuckerberg blamed himself in his email to staff about the layoffs.</p><p>Tech employees of all stripes — those with different levels of experience, or those with H-1B visas and needing employer sponsorship to stay in this country — are losing their jobs, according to layoff lists seen by MarketWatch.</p><p>Some will fare better than others: Data from ZipRecruiter shows that there remains a healthy number of job openings for more senior positions: for example, for engineer 2 instead of engineer 1.</p><p>And some industries within tech are less affected than others, at least so far. A recruiter for semiconductor companies told MarketWatch that she sees few signs of a slowdown. Even Intel Corp. which has announced it wants to trim costs, continues to hire except for in certain locations, she said.</p><p>Venture capitalists are urging caution: “If you’re a growth-stage investor, it’s probably not the best time to be in that stage of investing, partly because companies were overcapitalized and with valuations that were unsustainable,” said Barmak Mehta, founding partner atBallistic Ventures in Silicon Valley.</p><p>All of this is going to affect not just highly paid tech employees but also the other workers who are part of tech’s giant ecosystem.</p><p>A laid-off art-services provider for tech companies told MarketWatch he has become disillusioned with the industry. “I’ve now experienced a couple of times where companies do a hard turn, a pivot,” he said. “Tech feels like there’s this cult, like ‘we’re innovators and we’re gonna decide this is the next big thing,&#39;” no matter how it affects a company and its employees, he said.</p><p>A former Twitter employee who was laid off in early November after Musk took over the company and immediately slashed its workforce in half has already fielded calls from potential employers, he told MarketWatch. That’s because he has plenty of technical and management experience.</p><p>Does he think the downturn will help unions make inroads into tech? “I wish,” he said. “Getting these kinds of workers to organize is even more difficult than in other industries, and it’s not easy anywhere.”</p><p>But Maria Noel Fernandez, campaign director for Silicon Valley Rising, an alliance of labor groups and community leaders, is hopeful that this time presents an “opportunity to build a worker movement within the tech industry and the Bay Area.”</p><p>As for lower-wage workers, they were among the first to feel the pain. The biggest cuts in janitors and bus drivers in the San Francisco Bay Area since the pandemic happened at Meta right before the mass tech-worker layoffs.</p><p>Luis Fuentes, division director for SEIU-United Service Workers West, said unionized service workers in Silicon Valley have made “substantial gains,” but that a majority of them make less than $50,000 a year. Chief Executive Andy Jassy; HP Inc. announcing cuts over the next three years; and a report that Google is considering thousands of layoffs — that there will be more to come.By comparison, about 65,000 tech jobs were lost each year in 2008 and 2009 during the recession, according to Challenger, Gray & Christmas. Whether all the slashing will approach levels only previously seen during the dot-com bust, when almost 300,000 tech jobs were lost over two years, remains to be seen.Some longtime Silicon Valley observers and experts say this downturn is not like the dot-com bust of 2001 and 2002, because many of the companies that failed back then weren’t “real” companies. And though their estimates of how long this bust will last vary, they mostly agree that the impact will be significant and affect workers and others who power the industry.This time around, the companies making cuts may have grown too quickly or added too many employees during the pandemic and may need to reset or go back to normal, experts say. But they offer real goods or services, and they have revenue coming in.For more: Here are the tech companies that have announced layoffs“The dot-com bust was primarily, if not exclusively, companies that had no customers and no revenues,” said Stephen Levy, director and senior economist of the Center for Continuing Study of the California Economy. “The companies that are laying off, like Amazon, or freezing hiring, like Google or Apple have millions and millions of customers and are profitable,” he added.This tech downturn is not a surprise to others like Levy, who have lived through previous ones. Their forecasts range from cautious optimism to calamitous.“Silicon Valley has cycles,” said Russell Hancock, CEO of Joint Venture Silicon Valley. “We go up, we go down. It happens with regularity about every 10 years.” Hancock, who said he thought it was too early to say “the sky is falling,” added that he thought the beginning of the pandemic would spark the downturn. Instead, he said, “the pandemic turned out to be bonanza for tech… but it just turned out to be a spike and didn’t lead us to a new plateau. Now, demand is tapering.”But Tom Siebel, a billionaire serial entrepreneur whose latest title is CEO of C3.ai is more pessimistic. “This is just starting,” he told MarketWatch. “Before this is over, everyone will feel the sting, large companies and small. It will be hard, but the industry will be healthy once we get through it.”“All this weird, entitled behavior is coming to an end. No more people working in pajamas at home, being paid in bitcoin. This era will be a zinger, unfortunately,” he said. The downturn, he cautioned, will last at least two years and “look like something out of the 1970s. This recession took 15 years to happen. In 2020, 83,000 people in the tech industry lost their jobs, according to Challenger, Gray & Christmas.The 60,000-plus jobs lost this year is getting close to the equivalent of the number of U.S. tech jobs added by Silicon Valley’s biggest tech companies from 2020 to 2021, which was 68,558, according to an analysis of hiring data by the Silicon Valley Institute for Regional Studies.Some companies making job cuts have their own reasons and circumstances — but most of them have been affected by declining stock prices this year. The dramatic slashing of the staff of Twitter has everything to do with Elon Musk taking the helm, but before he bought the company its stock had traded as much as 73% lower than the $54.20 he paid per share. The slowdown in real estate activity is affecting related, fairly young companies. Yet other companies, such as ride-hailing giant Lyft Inc. have been under pressure to prove they can turn a profit.“These are scary times: A lot of tech companies have not been through a downturn,” Scott Russell, an SAP executive board member, told MarketWatch. “The mantra for nearly all of them the next few years is risk mitigation, controlled costs and operational efficiency,” he added. Some companies already started doing those things at the beginning of the pandemic. Not much and quite a lot.</p><p>One thing feels assured: the days of making easy money are over in the pandemic era. Benchmark interest rates are headed higher and bond yields, which have been anchored at historically low levels, are destined to rise in tandem.</p><p>It seemed as if Federal Reserve members couldn’t make that point any clearer this past week, ahead of the traditional media blackout that precedes the central bank’s first policy meeting of the year on Jan. 25-26.</p><p>The U.S. consumer-price and producer-price index releases this week have only cemented the market’s expectations of a more aggressive or hawkish monetary policy from the Fed.</p><p>The only real question is how many interest-rate increases will the Federal Open Market Committee dole out in 2022. JPMorgan Chase &amp; Co. JPM CEO Jamie Dimon intimated that seven might be the number to beat, with market-based projections pointing to the potential for three increases to the federal-funds rate in the coming months.</p><p>Meanwhile, yields for the 10-year Treasury note yielded 1.771% Friday afternoon, which means that yields have climbed by about 26 basis points in the first 10 trading days to start a calendar year, which would be the briskest such rise since 1992, according to Dow Jones Market Data. Back 30 years ago, the 10-year rose 32 basis points to around 7% to start that year.</p><p>The 2-year note BX:TMUBMUSD02Y, which tends to be more sensitive to the Fed’s interest rate moves, is knocking on the door of 1%, up 24 basis points so far this year, FactSet data show.</p><p>But do interest rate increases translate into a weaker stock market?</p><p>As it turns out, during so-called rate-hike cycles, which we seem set to enter into as early as March, the market tends to perform strongly, not poorly.</p><p>In fact, during a Fed rate-hike period the average return for the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA is nearly 55%, that of the S&amp;P 500 SPX is a gain of 62.9% and the Nasdaq Composite COMP has averaged a positive return of 102.7%, according to Dow Jones, using data going back to 1989 (see attached table). Fed interest rate cuts, perhaps unsurprisingly, also yield strong gains, with the Dow up 23%, the S&amp;P 500 gaining 21% and the Nasdaq rising 32%, on average during a period of Fed rate cuts.</p><p>Interest rate cuts tend to occur during periods when the economy is weak and rate hikes when the economy is viewed as too hot by some measure, which may account for the disparity in stock market performance during periods when interest-rate reductions occur.</p><p>To be sure, it is harder to see the market producing outperformance during a period in which the economy experiences 1970s-style inflation. Right now, it feels unlikely that bullish investors will get a whiff of double-digit returns based on the way stocks are shaping up so far in 2022. The Dow is down 1.2%, the S&amp;P 500 is off 2.2%, while the Nasdaq Composite is down a whopping 4.8% thus far in January.</p><p><b>What’s working?</b></p><p>So far this year, winning stock market trades have been in energy, with the S&amp;P 500’s energy sector XX:SP500 XLE looking at a 16.4% advance so far in 2022, while financials XX:SP500 XLF are running a distant second, up 4.4%. The other nine sectors of the S&amp;P 500 are either flat or lower.</p><p>Meanwhile, value themes are making a more pronounced comeback, eking out a 0.1% weekly gain last week, as measured by the iShares S&amp;P 500 Value ETF IVE, but month to date the return is 1.2%.</p><p><b>What’s not working?</b></p><p>Growth factors are getting hammered thus far as bond yields rise because a rapid rise in yields makes their future cash flows less valuable. Higher interest rates also hinder technology companies’ ability to fund stock buy backs. The popular iShares S&amp;P 500 Growth ETF IVW is down 0.6% on the week and down 5.1% in January so far.</p><p><b>What’s really not working?</b></p><p>Biotech stocks are getting shellacked, with the iShares Biotechnology ETF IBB down 1.1% on the week and 9% on the month so far.</p><p>And a popular retail-oriented ETF, the SPDR S&amp;P Retail ETF XRT tumbled 4.1% last week, contributing to a 7.4% decline in the month to date.</p><p>And Cathie Wood’s flagship ARK Innovation ETF ARKK finished the week down nearly 5% for a 15.2% decline in the first two weeks of January. Other funds in the complex, including ARK Genomic Revolution ETF ARKG and ARK Fintech Innovation ETF ARKF are similarly woebegone.</p><p>And popular meme names also are getting hammered, with GameStop Corp. All three finished near their lows of the day.</p>\n<p>Fed governors have been dropping hints in recent weeks that the beginning of the end of the central bank’s bond buying was nearing, and the minutes confirmed that&nbsp;taperingis at hand. “Most participants noted that …it could be appropriate to start reducing the pace of asset purchases this year,” the minutes read.</p>\n<p>The assessment comes as&nbsp;the economy has recovered quickly, and reflects that the Fed is now focused on when—and how quickly—to remove support from the economy.</p>\n<p>The selloff was broad. About 83% of S&amp;P 500 stocks fell on the day, according to FactSet. This dynamics often reflects concern about how the market will perform without the Fed there to support it.</p>\n<p>Now, it’s just a question of when tapering will begin. It’ “is going to be September or December,” said Dave Wagner, portfolio manager and analyst at Aptus Capital Advisors. “Everyone is focusing on Jackson Hole in my opinion,” he continued, referring to the conclave of central bankers that occurs later this month in Jackson Hole, Wyo.</p>\n<p>Strangely, the bond market didn’t react all that much, with the 10-year Treasury yield closing at 1.27%, where it hovered for most of the day. The 2-year yield, which often moves higher when market participants see the Fed hiking short-term interest rates sooner, ended at 0.21%, lower than the 0.22% it hit in the morning.</p>\n<p>“I don’t think we’ve learned anything new,” said Tom Graff, head of fixed income at Brown Advisory. Graff added that the consensus for a short-term interest rate hikes in 2022 or 2023 hasn’t changed.</p>\n<p>A weak market, however, couldn’t keep some stocks down.
