To be fair, the spring quarter was lapping the period during the first economic lockdowns in 2020 when sales were sparse. However, let's not take too much away from AMD. Semiconductor industry titan <b>Intel </b>was lapping a poor showing from a year ago too, but recently reported flat revenue in its Q2 2021.</p>\n<p>The $3.85 billion in sales actually beat CEO Dr. Lisa Su and the company's guidance provided a few months ago by $150 million. Su attributed part of the outperformance to AMD's ability to coax some extra supply from its chip fabrication partners during the last three-month period. More supply is expected to come online during the second half of 2021, but the global chip shortage will likely continue into 2022.</p>\n<p>Nevertheless, AMD's Q2 beat and further advance on the supply side led Su and the top team to raise its outlook for full-year 2021 sales growth. Revenue is now expected to be up approximately 60% from 2020, compared to previous guidance for 50% growth.</p>\n<h2>2. Years of market share gains could lie ahead</h2>\n<p>The former underdog now has an advanced lineup of chips -- on many fronts, more advanced than the flagging Intel -- and as a result, reported yet another quarter of growth across its entire product line.</p>\n<p>During Q2, AMD said half of the world's newest and fastest supercomputers were powered by its EPYC data center CPUs (central processing units). <b>Alphabet</b>'s Google Cloud also announced big leaps in price-to-performance using EPYC CPUs versus peers, no doubt helping lead to the increased adoption of the chips in cloud computing and data centers. And on the consumer chip front, <b>Tesla</b>&nbsp;chose AMD hardware to power the infotainment system in the latest Model S and Model X.</p>\n<p>These market share gains could continue for some time at AMD. The company's next-gen products utilizing 5-nanometer architecture (the smallest and highest-performing chips) are coming in 2022 -- well ahead of the product roadmap at rival Intel.</p>\n<h2>3. AMD is now a highly profitable firm</h2>\n<p>As AMD's technology has improved and sales have gained, its profitability profile has also been significantly raised. In Q2 2021, operating profit margin was 22% -- helping it break from the below-industry average, single-digit percentage operating margin it was stuck in for years. Free cash flow generated in the quarter was $888 million.</p>\n<p>The implications of this are significant. AMD can now comfortably invest in itself from cash it generates, and go shopping with the excess when an opportunity arises. Take <b>Xilinx </b>(NASDAQ:XLNX), for example. The acquisition of the leading field-programmable gate array (FPGA) company will close by the end of this year and open up yet another front on which AMD can attack Intel. Adding Xilinx to the mix will also further boost AMD's profit margin and research and development capabilities. This is a great match for the company and will position it for many more years of expansion.</p>\n<h2>Investor takeaway</h2>\n<p>AMD's stock now trades for 46 times trailing-12-month free cash flow. Revenue is now expected to be up approximately 60% from 2020, compared to previous guidance for 50% growth.\n2. Years of market share gains could lie ahead\nThe former underdog now has an advanced lineup of chips -- on many fronts, more advanced than the flagging Intel -- and as a result, reported yet another quarter of growth across its entire product line.\nDuring Q2, AMD said half of the world's newest and fastest supercomputers were powered by its EPYC data center CPUs (central processing units). Alphabet's Google Cloud also announced big leaps in price-to-performance using EPYC CPUs versus peers, no doubt helping lead to the increased adoption of the chips in cloud computing and data centers. And on the consumer chip front, Tesla chose AMD hardware to power the infotainment system in the latest Model S and Model X.\nThese market share gains could continue for some time at AMD. The company's next-gen products utilizing 5-nanometer architecture (the smallest and highest-performing chips) are coming in 2022 -- well ahead of the product roadmap at rival Intel.\n3. AMD is now a highly profitable firm\nAs AMD's technology has improved and sales have gained, its profitability profile has also been significantly raised. In Q2 2021, operating profit margin was 22% -- helping it break from the below-industry average, single-digit percentage operating margin it was stuck in for years. Free cash flow generated in the quarter was $888 million.\nThe implications of this are significant. AMD can now comfortably invest in itself from cash it generates, and go shopping with the excess when an opportunity arises. Take Xilinx (NASDAQ:XLNX), for example. The acquisition of the leading field-programmable gate array (FPGA) company will close by the end of this year and open up yet another front on which AMD can attack Intel. Adding Xilinx to the mix will also further boost AMD's profit margin and research and development capabilities. The update, known as iOS 14.5, allows iPhone and iPad users to limit companies from tracking their device’s activity. This makes it difficult for companies like Facebook to target users with personalized ads.\nNo company complained more about the impact of iOS 14.5 than Facebook, which warned that the change to the Apple software would impact small businesses’ ability to market to their customers. For a while now, Facebook has warned investors to brace for “ad targeting headwinds” related to Apple’s changes, as well as others in the internet landscape.\nThe social media giant is scheduled to release earnings Wednesday, July 28 after the bell.\nFacebook’s revenue for the second quarter, their guidance for the rest of the year and any commentary from the company’s executives during its earnings call will be telling. Facebook’s commerce business\nIn an effort to combat the restrictions of Apple’s iOS 14.5 update, Facebook has been ramping up its efforts to bring more commerce directly into its own apps.\nIt did this last year by introducing Facebook Shops and Instagram Shops, and more recently, the company announced plans to introduce more ways for creators to promote shoppable products through their Instagram accounts. Covid’s impact on app usage\nInvestors will want to know whether the economic reopening and the expansion of Covid-19 vaccines have affected the amount of time users spend on Facebook and its various apps.\nA year ago when people worldwide were forced indoors, Facebook and other consumer apps saw their usage skyrocket as people sought to stay connected. Now, investors will want to know if that usage has taken a hit or will it continue growing.\n“Now that people are out and getting around, are they posting more or are they living in the real world? What are they doing?” said Kim Forrest, chief investment officer of Bokeh Capital.\nAdding a twist to this, however, is the growing spread of the delta variant of the coronavirus. As cases start to rise again in the U.S., investors will want to know what kind of effect, if any, the delta variant could have on Facebook usage.\n3. The regulatory outlook\nFacebook has been under the microscope of lawmakers and regulators worldwide since the company’s March 2018 Cambridge Analytica scandal, in which it was reported that a political consulting firm had improperly accessed the data of 87 million Facebook profiles in a bid to influence the 2016 presidential election.\nThis quarter included some major news regarding all of that regulatory pressure.\nMost notably,Facebook scored a major win in late June when a federal court dismissed an antitrust complaint from the Federal Trade Commission against the company as well as a parallel case brought by 48 state attorneys general. As of this writing, China has administered over 1.54 billion doses, and the U.S. has administered 342 million -- enough to fully vaccinate 55% and 53.4% of their populations, respectively.</p>\n<p>The higher vaccination rates are allowing for faster reopening of economies in the two markets. In its most recent quarter, Starbucks reported U.S. sales eclipsed levels from before the pandemic. Meanwhile, sales in China were 90% recovered. Therefore, a resurgence in COVID-19 cases caused by the delta variant is less likely to cause economic lockdowns in those two countries.</p>\n<p>Even if a renewal of lockdowns is far less likely, the resurgence in cases could slow down reopening. Millions of students are expected to return to campus in the fall semester. And businesses are preparing to bring back&nbsp;employees to offices&nbsp;at least part-time in the second half of the year. The increase in infections could delay both.</p>\n<p><b>What this could mean for investors</b></p>\n<p>Analysts on Wall Street expect Starbucks to report revenue of $7.24 billion and earnings per share of $0.77 in its third quarter. If it meets those expectations, it would lift year-to-date revenue to $20.64 billion after the company reported revenue of $6.7 billion each in the first and second quarter.</p>\n<p>Interestingly, management has informed investors to expect overall revenue in the range of $28.5 billion to $29.3 billion for fiscal 2021. And considering that historically, Starbucks generates more revenue in the final quarter of the year compared to the first three, it would be on pace for reaching the yearly target.</p>\n<p>Still, management might provide an update on the fourth quarter. The delta variant is at least slowing the pace of economic reopenings. For instance, several major corporations have delayed a return to offices, and some countries have extended or instituted travel restrictions. Those developments could have hampered Starbucks' expectations for the fourth quarter.</p>\n<p>The&nbsp;stock price is up&nbsp;16.9% in 2021 and 11.5% in the last month alone. It does not appear that investors are pricing in any possibility of negative news coming out of Starbucks' earnings report. That raises the potential for a sharper sell-off if there is one.Investors&nbsp;looking to start a position in the company are better served waiting until after the earnings release to buy. The next closest competitor is <b>Walmart</b>, which'll handle about 7% of all U.S. online retail.</p>\n<p>Amazon has been able to pivot its incredible online retail success into signing up more than 200 million people worldwide to a Prime membership. While Prime members enjoy free two-day shipping and access to streaming content, the lure for Amazon is that Prime fees generate tens of billions in added revenue that it can use to undercut brick-and-mortar retailers on price and buoy its margins.</p>\n<p>What you might not realize about Amazon is that it's overwhelmingly dominant in a second industry, as well. Amazon Web Services (AWS) brought in 32% of global cloud infrastructure spending in the first quarter, per Canalys. Cloud infrastructure is still, arguably, in the early innings of its expansion, and it's a considerably higher margin segment for Amazon than retail or advertising. Thus, AWS is going to send Amazon's operating cash flow to the moon as it grows into a larger percentage of total sales.</p>\n<p>For the past 11 years, Wall Street and investors have consistently valued Amazon at a multiple of 23 to 37 times its cash flow. Since we don't get to choose when we get sick or what ailments we develop, there's a consistent demand for healthcare services, drugs, and devices, no matter how well or poorly the U.S. and global economy are performing.</p>\n<p>What makes Bristol Myers Squibb such a special company is its organic growth potential and astute dealmaking. To tackle the former, Bristol Myers and <b>Pfizer</b>&nbsp;co-developed the world's leading oral anticoagulant, Eliquis, which looks to be on pace for more than $10 billion in sales this year for Bristol. There's also cancer immunotherapy Opdivo, which is being examined in dozens of ongoing clinical trials. Opdivo is already bringing in about $7 billion annually, and could push higher with continued label expansion opportunities. All told, eight brand-name therapies are on track for at least $1.2 billion in annual sales this year, based on extrapolated Q1 sales totals.</p>\n<p>On the dealmaking front, Bristol Myers Squibb hit a home run when it acquired cancer and immunology drugmaker Celgene in 2019. Celgene's superstar is multiple myeloma drug Revlimid, which brought in $12.1 billion in sales last year and has been growing by a double-digit percentage annually for more than a decade. Longer duration of use, label expansions, improved cancer screening diagnostics, and strong pricing power have all fueled Revlimid's growth. Best of all, it's protected from a large wave of generic competition until the end of January 2026. But General Motors and its peers are the verge of taking advantage of an epic vehicle replacement cycle as consumers and businesses make the shift to electric vehicles (EV).</p>\n<p>Initially, General Motors was going to devote $20 billion to EV investment by mid-decade. However, in November, the company upped its expected outlay to $27 billion by 2025, with the ultimate goal of bringing 30 new EVs to market globally. Some of this capital will be used to bring EVs to market earlier than initially planned, as well as to develop GM's battery technology. With IHS <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/MRKT\">Markit</a> forecasting that 10% of all U.S. vehicle sales will be electric by 2025 (up from 1.8% in 2020), a hefty investment in this changing landscape makes sense for GM.</p>\n<p>Equally important are the company's ambitions overseas -- especially in China, the largest auto market in the world. By 2035, the Society of Automotive Engineers of China anticipates that half of all vehicle sales will be some form of alternative energy. Su attributed part of the outperformance to AMD's ability to coax some extra supply from its chip fabrication partners during the last three-month period. More supply is expected to come online during the second half of 2021, but the global chip shortage will likely continue into 2022.</p>\n<p>Nevertheless, AMD's Q2 beat and further advance on the supply side led Su and the top team to raise its outlook for full-year 2021 sales growth. Revenue is now expected to be up approximately 60% from 2020, compared to previous guidance for 50% growth.</p>\n<h2>2. Years of market share gains could lie ahead</h2>\n<p>The former underdog now has an advanced lineup of chips -- on many fronts, more advanced than the flagging Intel -- and as a result, reported yet another quarter of growth across its entire product line.</p>\n<p>During Q2, AMD said half of the world's newest and fastest supercomputers were powered by its EPYC data center CPUs (central processing units). <b>Alphabet</b>'s Google Cloud also announced big leaps in price-to-performance using EPYC CPUs versus peers, no doubt helping lead to the increased adoption of the chips in cloud computing and data centers. And on the consumer chip front, <b>Tesla</b>&nbsp;chose AMD hardware to power the infotainment system in the latest Model S and Model X.</p>\n<p>These market share gains could continue for some time at AMD. The company's next-gen products utilizing 5-nanometer architecture (the smallest and highest-performing chips) are coming in 2022 -- well ahead of the product roadmap at rival Intel.</p>\n<h2>3. AMD is now a highly profitable firm</h2>\n<p>As AMD's technology has improved and sales have gained, its profitability profile has also been significantly raised. In Q2 2021, operating profit margin was 22% -- helping it break from the below-industry average, single-digit percentage operating margin it was stuck in for years. Free cash flow generated in the quarter was $888 million.</p>\n<p>The implications of this are significant. AMD can now comfortably invest in itself from cash it generates, and go shopping with the excess when an opportunity arises. Take <b>Xilinx </b>(NASDAQ:XLNX), for example. The acquisition of the leading field-programmable gate array (FPGA) company will close by the end of this year and open up yet another front on which AMD can attack Intel. Adding Xilinx to the mix will also further boost AMD's profit margin and research and development capabilities. The two countries are also furthest along in vaccinating their populations. As of this writing, China has administered over 1.54 billion doses, and the U.S. has administered 342 million -- enough to fully vaccinate 55% and 53.4% of their populations, respectively.</p>\n<p>The higher vaccination rates are allowing for faster reopening of economies in the two markets. In its most recent quarter, Starbucks reported U.S. sales eclipsed levels from before the pandemic. Meanwhile, sales in China were 90% recovered. Therefore, a resurgence in COVID-19 cases caused by the delta variant is less likely to cause economic lockdowns in those two countries.</p>\n<p>Even if a renewal of lockdowns is far less likely, the resurgence in cases could slow down reopening. Millions of students are expected to return to campus in the fall semester. And businesses are preparing to bring back&nbsp;employees to offices&nbsp;at least part-time in the second half of the year. The increase in infections could delay both.</p>\n<p><b>What this could mean for investors</b></p>\n<p>Analysts on Wall Street expect Starbucks to report revenue of $7.24 billion and earnings per share of $0.77 in its third quarter. If it meets those expectations, it would lift year-to-date revenue to $20.64 billion after the company reported revenue of $6.7 billion each in the first and second quarter.</p>\n<p>Interestingly, management has informed investors to expect overall revenue in the range of $28.5 billion to $29.3 billion for fiscal 2021. And considering that historically, Starbucks generates more revenue in the final quarter of the year compared to the first three, it would be on pace for reaching the yearly target.</p>\n<p>Still, management might provide an update on the fourth quarter. The delta variant is at least slowing the pace of economic reopenings. For instance, several major corporations have delayed a return to offices, and some countries have extended or instituted travel restrictions. Those developments could have hampered Starbucks' expectations for the fourth quarter.</p>\n<p>The&nbsp;stock price is up&nbsp;16.9% in 2021 and 11.5% in the last month alone. It does not appear that investors are pricing in any possibility of negative news coming out of Starbucks' earnings report. That raises the potential for a sharper sell-off if there is one.Investors&nbsp;looking to start a position in the company are better served waiting until after the earnings release to buy.
