In testimony before Congress last week, Fed Chair Powell acknowledged that inflation was higher than the Fed expected and that they would not hesitate to \"adjust\" monetary policy if inflation began to spiral out of control.

But he reiterated that price increases due to supply and labor shortages due to the reopening of the economy are temporary.

The U.S. consumer price index for June released last week showed that CPI rose by 5.4% compared with the same period of last year, the highest level since 2008, and higher than the market expectation of 5%; On a sequential basis, it was up 0.9%, up from the previous forecast of 0.5%. After the data was released, lawmakers from both parties asked Powell questions about inflation.

Inflation may not be temporary

As Powell's policies gained more traction, questions about the appointment of the Fed chair began to surface. Powell's term expires in early February, and the White House typically names a new chairman months in advance for Senate confirmation.

While the vast majority of economists believe President Biden will follow tradition and continue to appoint Powell as chairman, Robert Kuttner, editor of American Prospect, predicted last week that Biden would appoint a new pick. Kuttner was the first to report that Yellen would be Treasury Secretary.

Ohio Sen. Brown, a Democrat and chairman of the Banking Committee, harshly criticized Powell at last week's hearing, arguing that loose regulation has made banks more unscrupulous. Senator Elizabeth Warren, an influential former presidential candidate, offered the same criticism.

Last week, Yellen, the last Fed chair, dodged a TV journalist's question about reappointing Powell, but she believes the Fed has done a good job.

After the crisis ended and the economy rebounded strongly, Powell continued to buy assets in full force, with interest rates near zero, which is exactly what Yellen wanted Powell to do.

But the Fed's independence began to be questioned because Powell dutifully followed the policies of his predecessor and the members of the Federal Open Market Committee stuck to the rules.

Generally, the producer price index is the leading indicator of the consumer price index. U.S. PPI rose 1.0% month-over-month and 7.3% year-over-year in June. Most banks expect price pressures to continue for some time.

That evidence suggests that Powell's insistence that inflation is temporary is becoming increasingly untenable. Inflation should have weakened as the base effect of the price downturn a year ago receded, and the months-long supply shortage only temporarily sidestepped the issue.

The Richmond Fed's president told the Wall Street Journal that it is too early for the Fed to consider reducing its current monthly bond purchases of $120 billion. Because before the pandemic hit in February 2020, the employment-to-population ratio was 61.1%, but it was still only 58% in June, and that data needs to stabilize above 59% before policymakers can discuss tapering.

James Bullard, president of the St. Louis Fed, suggested the time was approaching to start tapering bond purchases. \"I don't need to start tomorrow, but I think we're ready,\" he said in an interview.

Central bank policymakers in other countries are less hesitant. The Bank of Canada announced an expansion to C$3bn ($2.4bn) on top of a C$1bn weekly cut in bond purchases in April, and said it would cut further C$1bn ($784m) a week.

Michael Saunders, an external member of the Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee, said last week that the Bank of England should take action to curb inflation and hinted that he would vote in favour of reducing bond purchases at a meeting as early as early next month.

It signals that policymakers are turning hawkish, while David Ramsden, deputy governor and member of the MPC, also said he was concerned about inflation after the UK's CPI rose 2.5pc year-on-year in June.

The two policymakers said they disagreed with central bank governor Andrew Bailey. Bailey maintains that the central bank is right to leave policy unchanged.
","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Fed Watch: Biden or reappoint Powell, inflation fears mount
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nFed Watch: Biden or reappoint Powell, inflation fears mount\n
\n
\n\n\n

\n\n
\n
英为财情Investing
\n
2021-07-20 20:07
\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n

The Fed's interpretation that high inflation is temporary is becoming increasingly unconvincing.
