growth gets rolling again -- but look closer.","content":"
Every market surge has its leaders and laggards. Sometimes, the coming winners are relatively easy to spot, but in other cases, their strengths only become clear to everyone with the benefit of hindsight.
\n
I feel that Roku (NASDAQ:ROKU) and Sleep Number (NASDAQ:SNBR) -- yes, Sleep Number -- could be among the stocks that power the next bull market. Here's why.
\n
\n
Roku
\n
Roku stock is not a particularly popular bet on Wall Street these days. Some traders see it as an earlier-stage pandemic play that will flounder now that we're once again spending more time outside of our homes and less time streaming escapism. Last week, Amazon.com (NASDAQ:AMZN) rolled out a new line of Fire TV HDTVs, including the first-ever Amazon-built television.
\n
Let's tackle the Amazon challenge first. The new sets pack impressive specs at even more impressive prices. They start as low as $370 for an Alexa-fueled experience that feeds right into the Amazon Fire TV ecosystem. But will they become popular enough to dethrone Roku?
\n
Flat screens with built-in smart TV hardware and software platforms are popular, and Roku currently commands 38% of that market. However, for most consumers, the solution often comes down to just buying a $20 or $30 dongle -- cheap tech that a person can take with them wherever they travel, and that will also outlive the obsolescence of whatever gargantuan HDTV they own.
\n
Roku has been competing with Amazon's cutthroat pricing for the past seven years. And it has steadily found ways to compete with challengers that include three of the world's most valuable tech titans.
\n
There are now 55.1 million active users who rely on Roku to feed their streaming habits -- to the tune of more than three hours of viewing a day, on average. Roku's audience has grown by 28% over the past year, and average revenue per user rose by 46% as marketers paid up to reach Roku's engaged audience.
\n
One should never underestimate the power of a hungry Amazon, but Roku will continue to be the bar-raising leader. It's the obvious pick for consumers coveting its service agnosticism and its thousands of available apps. Its recent push into original content is just the cherry on top for the undisputed champ of streaming service stocks.
\n
Are we spending more time outside now? Sure! Will you still come back to watch the perpetually widening options of great must-see TV? Absolutely. Why do you think Amazon is making its own TVs now?
\n
\n
Sleep Number
\n
Some people put their money under their mattress, but smart investors may want to consider investing some of their money in the mattress. Sleep Number makes air-chambered mattresses with easily adjustable firmness based on a sleeper's desires.
\n
Sleep Number has always stood out within a challenging mattress market thanks to its differentiated product, and it stands out even more now that it has debuted its Sleep Number 360 bed. Billed as the company's first smart bed, it monitors people's sleep levels and adjusts for them throughout the night. From firmness, heat or cooling, and even elevation levels, Sleep Number provides a customized experience with tech that none of its peers can offer.
\n
Customers love it. Sometimes, the coming winners are relatively easy to spot, but in other cases, their strengths only become clear to everyone with the benefit of hindsight.\nI feel that Roku (NASDAQ:ROKU) and Sleep Number (NASDAQ:SNBR) -- yes, Sleep Number -- could be among the stocks that power the next bull market. Here's why.\nImage source: Getty Images.\nRoku\nRoku stock is not a particularly popular bet on Wall Street these days. Some traders see it as an earlier-stage pandemic play that will flounder now that we're once again spending more time outside of our homes and less time streaming escapism. Last week, Amazon.com (NASDAQ:AMZN) rolled out a new line of Fire TV HDTVs, including the first-ever Amazon-built television.\nLet's tackle the Amazon challenge first. The new sets pack impressive specs at even more impressive prices. They start as low as $370 for an Alexa-fueled experience that feeds right into the Amazon Fire TV ecosystem. But will they become popular enough to dethrone Roku?\nFlat screens with built-in smart TV hardware and software platforms are popular, and Roku currently commands 38% of that market. However, for most consumers, the solution often comes down to just buying a $20 or $30 dongle -- cheap tech that a person can take with them wherever they travel, and that will also outlive the obsolescence of whatever gargantuan HDTV they own.\nRoku has been competing with Amazon's cutthroat pricing for the past seven years. And it has steadily found ways to compete with challengers that include three of the world's most valuable tech titans.\nThere are now 55.1 million active users who rely on Roku to feed their streaming habits -- to the tune of more than three hours of viewing a day, on average. Roku's audience has grown by 28% over the past year, and average revenue per user rose by 46% as marketers paid up to reach Roku's engaged audience.\nOne should never underestimate the power of a hungry Amazon, but Roku will continue to be the bar-raising leader. It's the obvious pick for consumers coveting its service agnosticism and its thousands of available apps. Its recent push into original content is just the cherry on top for the undisputed champ of streaming service stocks.\nAre we spending more time outside now? Sure! Will you still come back to watch the perpetually widening options of great must-see TV? Absolutely. Why do you think Amazon is making its own TVs now?\nImage source: Sleep Number.\nSleep Number\nSome people put their money under their mattress, but smart investors may want to consider investing some of their money in the mattress. Sleep Number makes air-chambered mattresses with easily adjustable firmness based on a sleeper's desires.\nSleep Number has always stood out within a challenging mattress market thanks to its differentiated product, and it stands out even more now that it has debuted its Sleep Number 360 bed. Billed as the company's first smart bed, it monitors people's sleep levels and adjusts for them throughout the night. From firmness, heat or cooling, and even elevation levels, Sleep Number provides a customized experience with tech that none of its peers can offer.\nCustomers love it. Sleep Number sales soared by 70% in its latest quarter. A lot of companies have been cranking out ridiculous year-over-year growth numbers lately because the early stage of the pandemic -- 2020's second quarter -- was so challenging. But even measured against the more normal climate that prevailed in Q2 2019, Sleep Number's top line was up by 36% -- and its bottom line is growing even faster.\nInvestors weren't impressed by Sleep Number's latest report. It was actually a rare miss on the bottom line, and management had warned that supply chain constraints would drag on its operations in June and July. Thankfully, these are all transitory troubles. We've been spending a lot more time at home over the past two years, and putting extra wear and tear on our beds. When it comes time to upgrade your mattress -- and you may be due about now -- don't be surprised if Sleep Number winds up being your first choice. Journal","summary":"Chief Executive Darren Woods faces pressure from investors to take a more decisive approach to reduc","content":"
Chief Executive Darren Woods faces pressure from investors to take a more decisive approach to reducing emissions
\n
Exxon Mobil Corp. is considering a pledge to reduce its net carbon emissions to zero by 2050, according to people familiar with the matter, in what would amount to a significant strategic shift by the oil company.
\n
In March 2020, Exxon Chief Executive Darren Woods described ambitious carbon reduction targets made by some European rivals as nothing more than a “beauty competition,” saying the pledges lacked tangible plans to achieve them.
\n
Mr. Woods and others on Exxon’s board are now giving the same idea serious debate, the people said. Mr. Woods is facing pressure from investors to demonstrate a bolder path to reducing emissions. Following a bruising proxy fight this year,an activist hedge fund elected three new members to the company’s board.
\n
The Irving, Texas, company hasn’t made a final decision on a “net zero” pledge, according to the people. It plans to unveil a series of strategic moves on environmental and other issues before the end of the year, the people said.
\n
Exxon spokesman Casey Norton said the company is committed to working to decarbonize high-emitting sectors and supports regulation that will spur that.
\n
“As the board goes through its deliberations regarding future plans related to the company’s energy transition activities, we routinely evaluate our work and commitments and will update our shareholders and the public as those plans evolve,” Mr. Norton said.
\n
Mr. Woods has said Exxon supports the goals of the Paris climate agreement, an international accord that aims to limit the increase in the global average temperature to less than 2 degrees Celsius above preindustrial levels and pursue efforts to limit the increase to 1.5 degrees. He has stopped short of committing Exxon to a net-zero plan.
\n
To date, Exxon has instead pledged to reduce its so-called carbon intensity, or emissions as a proportion of total energy produced. It is unclear exactly what a new Exxon net-zero pledge would entail, but what is currently being considered would apply to the emissions directly produced by Exxon’s assets and stemming from the energy the company uses, the people said. That is known in climate disclosure as scope 1 and 2 emissions.
\n
There is no standard definition for how companies define net-zero emissions, and specifics often vary, which has led some to dismiss the pledges as exercises in modern-day image management. Such goals generally aim to reduce a company’s carbon footprint to neutral in the future.
\n
Exxon lost three seats on its board of directors at its annual shareholder meeting in May to the hedge fund Engine No. 1, which argued that the energy company needs to act faster to remake itself and invest in clean energy.
\n
Senior executives within the company now believe it needs to act urgently to refine its strategy to navigate the energy transition, and some of Exxon’s largest shareholders have told executives recently that they need to set more- ambitious climate-change targets or risk further alienating investors, the people said.
\n
Meanwhile, some on Exxon’s board have expressed support for a carbon neutrality pledge, according to the people. In particular, Alexander Karsner, one of the Engine No. 1 candidates elected to Exxon’s board and an executive at Alphabet Inc.’s innovation lab, has pressed Mr. Woods to reposition the company to address climate change, the people said.
\n
In a virtual board meeting in July, Mr. Karsner suggested to Mr. Woods that Exxon hadn’t acted quickly enough to reduce its emissions, in an exchange that some of the people described as contentious.
\n
Some of the other new directors also hold doubts regarding Mr. Woods’s strategy for Exxon, people familiar with the matter said. Mr. Woods has focused on trying to bring the new board members into the fold and having candid discussions about what needs to change, some of the people said.
\n
Exxon has for years evaluated investing in renewable energy, biofuels and other technologies including carbon capture and storage. In recent conversations with the board, Mr. Woods has shared Exxon’s energy transition plans, including its evaluation of each option and the path to net zero, according to a person familiar with the matter.
\n
After the historic proxy fight, Exxon has five new board members in total. In addition to the three Engine No. 1 candidates, Exxon appointed two new directors as part of a separate settlement with the hedge fund D.E. Shaw. Last week Exxon held its first in-person board meeting since the new directors joined the board. Mr. Woods described the meeting as encouraging during a call with analysts Friday, when the company reported earnings.
\n
Mr. Norton declined to comment on board deliberations.
\n
Beginning last year, several large European oil companies including BP PLC and Royal Dutch Shell PLC made public commitments to reduce to zero the emissions from their operations and from assets they own but don’t operate. Shell also set a net-zero target for emissions from its products.
\n
How companies will achieve such targets is unclear. BP and Shell have begun selling higher-carbon-emitting fossil-fuel assets and investing more in renewable energy. Exxon formed a new business unit in February to invest in lower-emission energy technologies. It will initially focus primarily on carbon capture and storage projects, which gather carbon emissions from industrial processes or directly from the air and deposit them underground.
\n
The announcements are happening as the Biden administration focuses on how businesses respond to threats linked to climate change. Mr. Woods is facing pressure from investors to demonstrate a bolder path to reducing emissions. Following a bruising proxy fight this year,an activist hedge fund elected three new members to the company’s board.\nThe Irving, Texas, company hasn’t made a final decision on a “net zero” pledge, according to the people. It plans to unveil a series of strategic moves on environmental and other issues before the end of the year, the people said.\nExxon spokesman Casey Norton said the company is committed to working to decarbonize high-emitting sectors and supports regulation that will spur that.\n“As the board goes through its deliberations regarding future plans related to the company’s energy transition activities, we routinely evaluate our work and commitments and will update our shareholders and the public as those plans evolve,” Mr. Norton said.\nMr. Woods has said Exxon supports the goals of the Paris climate agreement, an international accord that aims to limit the increase in the global average temperature to less than 2 degrees Celsius above preindustrial levels and pursue efforts to limit the increase to 1.5 degrees. He has stopped short of committing Exxon to a net-zero plan.\nTo date, Exxon has instead pledged to reduce its so-called carbon intensity, or emissions as a proportion of total energy produced. It is unclear exactly what a new Exxon net-zero pledge would entail, but what is currently being considered would apply to the emissions directly produced by Exxon’s assets and stemming from the energy the company uses, the people said. That is known in climate disclosure as scope 1 and 2 emissions.\nThere is no standard definition for how companies define net-zero emissions, and specifics often vary, which has led some to dismiss the pledges as exercises in modern-day image management. Such goals generally aim to reduce a company’s carbon footprint to neutral in the future.\nExxon lost three seats on its board of directors at its annual shareholder meeting in May to the hedge fund Engine No. 1, which argued that the energy company needs to act faster to remake itself and invest in clean energy.\nSenior executives within the company now believe it needs to act urgently to refine its strategy to navigate the energy transition, and some of Exxon’s largest shareholders have told executives recently that they need to set more- ambitious climate-change targets or risk further alienating investors, the people said.\nMeanwhile, some on Exxon’s board have expressed support for a carbon neutrality pledge, according to the people. In particular, Alexander Karsner, one of the Engine No. 1 candidates elected to Exxon’s board and an executive at Alphabet Inc.’s innovation lab, has pressed Mr. Woods to reposition the company to address climate change, the people said.\nIn a virtual board meeting in July, Mr. Karsner suggested to Mr. Woods that Exxon hadn’t acted quickly enough to reduce its emissions, in an exchange that some of the people described as contentious.\nSome of the other new directors also hold doubts regarding Mr. Woods’s strategy for Exxon, people familiar with the matter said. Mr. Woods has focused on trying to bring the new board members into the fold and having candid discussions about what needs to change, some of the people said.\nExxon has for years evaluated investing in renewable energy, biofuels and other technologies including carbon capture and storage. In recent conversations with the board, Mr. Woods has shared Exxon’s energy transition plans, including its evaluation of each option and the path to net zero, according to a person familiar with the matter.\nAfter the historic proxy fight, Exxon has five new board members in total. In addition to the three Engine No. 1 candidates, Exxon appointed two new directors as part of a separate settlement with the hedge fund D.E. Shaw. Last week Exxon held its first in-person board meeting since the new directors joined the board. Mr. Woods described the meeting as encouraging during a call with analysts Friday, when the company reported earnings.\nMr. Norton declined to comment on board deliberations.\nBeginning last year, several large European oil companies including BP PLC and Royal Dutch Shell PLC made public commitments to reduce to zero the emissions from their operations and from assets they own but don’t operate. Shell also set a net-zero target for emissions from its products.\nHow companies will achieve such targets is unclear. BP and Shell have begun selling higher-carbon-emitting fossil-fuel assets and investing more in renewable energy. Exxon formed a new business unit in February to invest in lower-emission energy technologies. It will initially focus primarily on carbon capture and storage projects, which gather carbon emissions from industrial processes or directly from the air and deposit them underground.\nThe announcements are happening as the Biden administration focuses on how businesses respond to threats linked to climate change. The Securities and Exchange Commission is preparing to require public companies to disclose more information on the matter. Biden administration officials have said better corporate reporting on climate change will channel more capital toward greener industries, helping governments reach the Paris agreement’s goals.\nAt Exxon’s annual investor day in March 2020, Mr. Woods said companies would have to sell oil and gas assets to accomplish net-zero targets, an exercise he said would simply move the emissions to a new operator.\n“All you’re doing is moving out from one company or one country to someplace else,” Mr. Woods said at the time. “It doesn’t solve the problem.”\nInstead, Exxon said in December it would reduce its methane emissions intensity by 40% to 50% and cut its flaring intensity by 35% to 45% by 2025, which it said would cut overall emissions from production by 30%.ChevronCorp.and many other large U.S. oil producers also haven’t made net-zero commitments.\nKevin Holt, senior portfolio manager for Invesco Ltd., said net-zero pledges for scope 1 and 2 emissions are becoming the industry norm. Invesco owned nearly $400 million in Exxon stock as of March, according to S&P Global Market Intelligence.\n“It’s table stakes to be in the business,” Mr. Holt said. “It’s something you have to do if you want to be a responsible company.”","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":108,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":899721633,"gmtCreate":1628216249722,"gmtModify":1703503324898,"author":{"id":"4087549167151930","authorId":"4087549167151930","name":"Betterjob","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/3a6e660c283e305dd2a1669316c2511b","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4087549167151930","authorIdStr":"4087549167151930"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"I wont be alive to see","listText":"I wont be alive to see","text":"I wont be alive to see","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/899721633","repostId":"1187583618","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":101,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":899723315,"gmtCreate":1628216151037,"gmtModify":1703503321815,"author":{"id":"4087549167151930","authorId":"4087549167151930","name":"Betterjob","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/3a6e660c283e305dd2a1669316c2511b","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4087549167151930","authorIdStr":"4087549167151930"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Yes ver slow growrg.h rate","listText":"Yes ver slow growrg.h rate","text":"Yes ver slow growrg.h rate","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/899723315","repostId":"1186157835","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1186157835","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1628215894,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1186157835?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-08-06 10:11","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Visa: Slowing Growth Rate, We May Need More","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1186157835","media":"seekingalpha","summary":"Summary\n\nVisa has been superb at delivering value and growth for investors and customers for the pas","content":"
Summary
\n
\n
Visa has been superb at delivering value and growth for investors and customers for the past decade and more, with more and more of our everyday financial transactions moving digital.
\n
However, growth rate is inevitably going to slow down and I believe the company should be hiking their dividend to entice investors to stay on the gravy train.
\n
I remain bullish on the company's prospects even as I believe we need to see more.
\n
\n
miniseries/E+ via Getty Images
\n
Visa (V) has been the ultimate success story of wealth accumulation. Even as they don't pay a high dividend yield, the transition from debit and account balance style of financing over to digital and credit (or simply debt) has been a major boon for the company's top and bottom lines. As a result, and together with a sizable multi-billion dollar share repurchasing program, delivered a CAGR return of over 27.5% over the past decade.
\n
Now, as expected, this debit-to-debt transition rate is slowing as most of the developed world has already shifted to paperless, contactless and debit-less financial situations and this is seen by analyst forecasts slowing growth rates from 27% to 15% over the next 5 years. Although I do believe that the company is likely to beat these expectations by a handsome margin, it's still slightly concerning for the longer-run return prospects.
\n
Although we can have the dividend vs buyback debate all day every day, I think that there should be some consideration to a dividend hike as they currently only pay a 0.5% annual dividend yield which does not entice investors given the slowing growth rate for the longer run.
\n
Accumulating Growth & Returning Value
\n
Visa has seen one of the steadiest share price appreciation environments in the entire stocks market and it has done so on behalf of the transition from debit to credit in almost all of the elements in our lives. We use credit for our day-to-day lives as well as buying vehicles, housing, eating out and all of those high-growth segments which are seeing huge jumps as our priorities shift as a nation. The levels of debt that the average American and global consumer is taking on is concerning on a societal level, but as it's not expected to change any time soon, the company is set to benefit from this steady stream of income with sky-high margins due to almost insignificant upkeep expenses.
\n
Another positive factor is the company's use of share repurchasing to increase their value per share. Over the past decade, the company has bought back roughly $8 billion worth of its own stock every year and has a new authorization which gives it the ability to buy back as much as $11 billion of its own stock in 2021 alone. So far, they've repurchased almost $4 billion of their stock in 2021 and are expected to accelerate this repurchasing as the year progresses as they've stepped it down during the post-pandemic months. The company used the pandemic sell-off to purchase almost $5 billion worth of stock in the first several months of 2020.
\n
Even so, this is only a roughly 2.2% reduction in shares outstanding annually. There surely is a large percentage of investors who would likely prefer the company provide a higher dividend yield, which could create better value. Since the company has such a sky-high gross margin, which is only expected to increase as they integrate third-party services and see higher overall credit spending, they can certainly sustain a higher dividend yield and maintain some amount of share repurchases.
\n
There's One More Thing
\n
One thing that is slightly concerning to me is the company's debt position. They've held off from taking on any long-term debt for decades but in recent years has accumulated just under $20 billion in long-term debt. As a result, they've been paying over $530 million annually in interest expense. The danger here is that we're in a rising rate environment and although other parts of their business will gain from this, there's the potential for them to see as much as $1 billion annually disappear from their balance sheets if they continue to hold some of this debt for the next few years.
\n
The positive spin on this is that the company does currently hold their highest ever cash position with just over $18 billion in cash and equivalents as well as another $1.2 billion in short-term investments. Moreover, although they've been investing less money and returning less interest income, they have been retiring the high-yield debt ahead of schedule and as a result, interest expense has been on the decline. It's unclear what the company's priorities will be moving forward but I do expect more of this to continue. They do have the potential to pay back most of the non-fixed-rate debt if they can't find a higher ROI (return on investment) to use the cash.
\n
Slowing Growth Rate: Why We're All Here
\n
The reason I talk about the demand for a higher yield as well as various debt and cash positions is because, naturally, sales and income growth rates are expected to slow after decades of accelerating growth due to the debit-to-debt transition.
\n
The company has shown a CAGR of over 27.5% over the past 10 years and now analysts expect the company to report a, still high, but slowing rate. For the next 5 years, they currently expect a CAGR of 13.9% to EPS, significantly less than the past 5 years. Here are the figures for 2020 through 2025:
\n
(Source: Analyst projections,Seeking Alpha)
\n
\n
\n

\n
\n
\n
Even as the company has beaten expectations for most of the past decade quarterly reporting, it's unclear if this will continue as analysts project that the company's margins will improve significantly over the next few years, as evident by sales growth expectations. This doesn't make much sense to me as more competitive pressures and third-party services like cashback, advertising revenue sharing services and more will start eating at the company's sky-high margins over the next several years.
\n
For sales, analysts currently expect Visa to report a sales CAGR of 10.3% throughout the same timeframe as I mentioned earlier for EPS projections. This means that the company will increase margins as they expect EPS to grow at a higher, near 14% growth rate over the same period.
\n
(Source: Analyst projections,Seeking Alpha)
\n
\n
\n

\n
\n
\n
I continue to believe that the company may beat sales expectations as we see stronger transition figures but I do not believe we'll be seeing much EPS beats if they continue to guide for margin expansion. The transitions within these industries away from high-interest products to still-high-but-lower interest products are almost certain to put a small but significant damper on margin growth.
\n
Investment Conclusion
\n
Visa has a bright future ahead and with the roughly 15% expected EPS growth rate and the additional 2.2% buyback rate, it is nearly certain to beat the overall market return rate, which has historically been just over 10%. Even so, the company growth rate is inevitably slowing, and with rising competitive pressure and third party services expenses, I believe there needs to be more to entice long term yield investors who may not be all that optimistic about the company's ability to continue and beat the market without being paid to wait.
\n
The company has more than enough cash to increase its dividend yield to over 2% while continuing the same level of share repurchasing. As a result, and together with a sizable multi-billion dollar share repurchasing program, delivered a CAGR return of over 27.5% over the past decade.\nNow, as expected, this debit-to-debt transition rate is slowing as most of the developed world has already shifted to paperless, contactless and debit-less financial situations and this is seen by analyst forecasts slowing growth rates from 27% to 15% over the next 5 years. Although I do believe that the company is likely to beat these expectations by a handsome margin, it's still slightly concerning for the longer-run return prospects.\nAlthough we can have the dividend vs buyback debate all day every day, I think that there should be some consideration to a dividend hike as they currently only pay a 0.5% annual dividend yield which does not entice investors given the slowing growth rate for the longer run.\nAccumulating Growth & Returning Value\nVisa has seen one of the steadiest share price appreciation environments in the entire stocks market and it has done so on behalf of the transition from debit to credit in almost all of the elements in our lives. We use credit for our day-to-day lives as well as buying vehicles, housing, eating out and all of those high-growth segments which are seeing huge jumps as our priorities shift as a nation. The levels of debt that the average American and global consumer is taking on is concerning on a societal level, but as it's not expected to change any time soon, the company is set to benefit from this steady stream of income with sky-high margins due to almost insignificant upkeep expenses.\nAnother positive factor is the company's use of share repurchasing to increase their value per share. The company used the pandemic sell-off to purchase almost $5 billion worth of stock in the first several months of 2020.\nEven so, this is only a roughly 2.2% reduction in shares outstanding annually. There surely is a large percentage of investors who would likely prefer the company provide a higher dividend yield, which could create better value. Since the company has such a sky-high gross margin, which is only expected to increase as they integrate third-party services and see higher overall credit spending, they can certainly sustain a higher dividend yield and maintain some amount of share repurchases.\nThere's One More Thing\nOne thing that is slightly concerning to me is the company's debt position. They've held off from taking on any long-term debt for decades but in recent years has accumulated just under $20 billion in long-term debt. As a result, they've been paying over $530 million annually in interest expense. The danger here is that we're in a rising rate environment and although other parts of their business will gain from this, there's the potential for them to see as much as $1 billion annually disappear from their balance sheets if they continue to hold some of this debt for the next few years.\nThe positive spin on this is that the company does currently hold their highest ever cash position with just over $18 billion in cash and equivalents as well as another $1.2 billion in short-term investments. Moreover, although they've been investing less money and returning less interest income, they have been retiring the high-yield debt ahead of schedule and as a result, interest expense has been on the decline. It's unclear what the company's priorities will be moving forward but I do expect more of this to continue. They do have the potential to pay back most of the non-fixed-rate debt if they can't find a higher ROI (return on investment) to use the cash.\nSlowing Growth Rate: Why We're All Here\nThe reason I talk about the demand for a higher yield as well as various debt and cash positions is because, naturally, sales and income growth rates are expected to slow after decades of accelerating growth due to the debit-to-debt transition.\nThe company has shown a CAGR of over 27.5% over the past 10 years and now analysts expect the company to report a, still high, but slowing rate. For the next 5 years, they currently expect a CAGR of 13.9% to EPS, significantly less than the past 5 years. Here are the figures for 2020 through 2025:\n(Source: Analyst projections,Seeking Alpha)\n\n\n\n\n\nEven as the company has beaten expectations for most of the past decade quarterly reporting, it's unclear if this will continue as analysts project that the company's margins will improve significantly over the next few years, as evident by sales growth expectations. This doesn't make much sense to me as more competitive pressures and third-party services like cashback, advertising revenue sharing services and more will start eating at the company's sky-high margins over the next several years.\nFor sales, analysts currently expect Visa to report a sales CAGR of 10.3% throughout the same timeframe as I mentioned earlier for EPS projections. This means that the company will increase margins as they expect EPS to grow at a higher, near 14% growth rate over the same period.\n(Source: Analyst projections,Seeking Alpha)\n\n\n\n\n\nI continue to believe that the company may beat sales expectations as we see stronger transition figures but I do not believe we'll be seeing much EPS beats if they continue to guide for margin expansion. The transitions within these industries away from high-interest products to still-high-but-lower interest products are almost certain to put a small but significant damper on margin growth.\nInvestment Conclusion\nVisa has a bright future ahead and with the roughly 15% expected EPS growth rate and the additional 2.2% buyback rate, it is nearly certain to beat the overall market return rate, which has historically been just over 10%. Even so, the company growth rate is inevitably slowing, and with rising competitive pressure and third party services expenses, I believe there needs to be more to entice long term yield investors who may not be all that optimistic about the company's ability to continue and beat the market without being paid to wait.\nThe company has more than enough cash to increase its dividend yield to over 2% while continuing the same level of share repurchasing. Investing that cash has been good for the company but has not brought even close to the same level of return that hiking dividend or increasing buyback will do.\nI remain bullish on the company's long-term prospects but am waiting to see some more of a focus on shareholder value before adding to a position.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":160,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":899720035,"gmtCreate":1628216057927,"gmtModify":1703503318092,"author":{"id":"4087549167151930","authorId":"4087549167151930","name":"Betterjob","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/3a6e660c283e305dd2a1669316c2511b","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4087549167151930","authorIdStr":"4087549167151930"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"What happened?","listText":"What happened?","text":"What happened?","images":[{"img":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/a7c30a1399b405369b8ec1a87d198362","width":"1080","height":"3167"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/899720035","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":63,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":890018740,"gmtCreate":1628066126780,"gmtModify":1703500569902,"author":{"id":"4087549167151930","authorId":"4087549167151930","name":"Betterjob","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/3a6e660c283e305dd2a1669316c2511b","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4087549167151930","authorIdStr":"4087549167151930"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"I bought today. That's not quite the case, though. Regardless of crude oil's price, the nation still consumes a relatively fixed amount of it -- and natural gas -- on any given day. Even with last year's sweeping shutdowns of many commercial enterprises, for instance, the U.S. Energy Information Administration reports the nation only used about 3% less gas than it did in 2019. This year's and next year's projected usage is on par with 2019's usage. While the most recent increase was barely a pittance, IBM has now upped its dividend in each of the past 26 years. This qualifies the stock as a Dividend Aristocrat -- a relatively new accolade that CEO Arvind Krishna may fight tooth and nail to hang on to.
\n
That being said, nervous investors who haven't taken a good look at IBM in a while may want to take note of the fact that this isn't the perpetually problem-plagued company it was just a few years back.
\n
The turnaround is slow going to be sure, but Krishna clearly has his finger on the pulse of the opportunity at hand. He commented in his 2020 letter to shareholders, \"hybrid cloud and AI are the two next great shifts in the technology landscape, and IBM is positioning itself to play a key role in this swift and massive transformation.\" And right on cue, last quarter's revenue growth was the company's best in three years, led by its cloud offerings.
\n
Granted, the comparison was being made to suppressed, pandemic-crimped results.
