The Chinese EV company has spent the last couple of years trying to capture consistent growth without much success.</p><p>As CnEVPost highlights, NIO needs to deliver 32,000 vehicles per month in the 2H to double sales in 2023 from the 122,486 units delivered last year. At the BoA 2023 Asia Conference, management reportedly made the following financial targets for the 2H:</p><ul><li><p>20K average monthly vehicle deliveries</p></li><li><p>Q3 gross margin - 10%</p></li><li><p>Q4 gross margin - 15%</p></li></ul><p>Going back to the monthly deliveries, NIO has struggled to deliver much more than 10K vehicles in any particular month. Outside of the last 2 months of 2022, the Chinese EV company has failed to even reach 14K monthly vehicle deliveries, so any month above 2OK, much less multiple months, would be momentous.</p><p>The major problem with the current vehicle delivery targets is that NIO would only deliver 120K units in the 2H after delivering just 55K in the 1H. The vehicle delivery total of 175K would definitely set a new annual delivery record, but NIO would end up far short of the target to double sales to ~250K for the year, questioning whether the company will even meet this new target.</p><p>The delivery targets aren&#39;t out of the question, considering <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/LI\">Li Auto</a> topped 32K deliveries in June, up 150% from only 11K last year.</p><h2>Cash Wasn&#39;t Needed</h2><p>A big part of the investment story in the last month was the investment by CYVN Holdings. Not only did the investment vehicle of the Abu Dhabi government invest nearly $740 million directly into acquiring 84,695,543 new shares at $8.72 per share, but also CYVN bought another 40,137,614 shares from <strong>Tencent Holdings</strong> (OTCPK:TCEHY) to acquire a total position of ~7%.</p><p>NIO ended Q1 with a cash balance of $5.5 billion, though the company does have ~$2.8 billion in debt to offset some of the cash balance. The agreement was more about a partner for international markets. The parties agreed to cooperate to jointly pursue opportunities in NIO&#39;s international business.</p><p>Based on the Q1 adjusted net loss of nearly $600 million and a similar loss in Q2, NIO probably saw the cash balance generally flat during Q2. The CYVN investment of $740 million should generally match the quarterly cash burn rate, leaving NIO in a strong cash balance position.</p><p>A big key to the 2H investment story is the ability of NIO to return the gross margin level back to 10% to 15% and shoot for a 20% gross margin. The company is forecasting a path to cutting the quarterly cash burn levels to where additional cash wasn&#39;t needed.</p><p>On the $3 billion sales target for Q4&#39;23, NIO would produce $450 million in gross profit after virtually nothing in Q1. The much smaller losses going forward reduce the need for more cash.</p><p>The stock bounced off a higher low around $8 following the equity investment. NIO appears headed in the right direction following the release of new models and the big investment. Besides, the Abu Dhabi government wouldn&#39;t invest over $1 billion in a Chinese EV automaker without some plans to push forward international operations and some knowledge that orders are progressing towards targets of over 20K per month in vehicle deliveries.</p><h2>Takeaway</h2><p>The key investor takeaway is that NIO stock is finally trading in a bullish manner after a tough couple of years since the stock topped above $60 in early 2021. The stock lost more than 85% from its all-time high of $39 to trade near $6 towards the end of 2022. But then, to continue the roller coaster, the stock is up nearly 30% YTD. Where does the stock go from here? I don&#39;t know exactly and I doubt anyone else does. But this article provides a few reasons to help investors with their decisions and concludes with my thoughts on how I am planning to play Palantir here. Let us get into the details.</p><h2 style=\"text-align: left;\">Short to Medium Term Earnings</h2><p style=\"text-align: left;\">Predicting the short term direction of any stock is a fool&#39;s errand and this applies even more for a young and volatile stock like Palantir. Nonetheless, it is interesting to see the upward tick in Earnings Per Share (&#34;EPS&#34;) estimates for Palantir&#39;s 2023 and 2024 with the numbers going up 25% and 14% respectively. The stock is trading a hair above the 200-Day moving average and the fact that all the commonly used moving averages are within 10% of each other says the stock is establishing a fairly strong base around the $8 region.</p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">The stock&#39;s Relative Strength Index (&#34;RSI&#34;) is a hair below 50 and that suggests there is plenty of room to the upside if the stock manages to break above the current trading range. That is impressive for any company and even more so a company in its early growth phase where expenses typically outweigh a company&#39;s ability to bring in and retain cash.</p></li><li><p>Palantir has zero long term debt. Yes, you read that right. Zero. And it has been that way for nearly two years now, which is almost as long as it has been a public company. This shows their confidence in their ability to raise cash through operations and their operational discipline.</p></li><li><p>Since September 2021, Palantir&#39;s quarterly Free Cash Flow (&#34;FCF&#34;) has been range bound between $200 Million and $300 Million as shown below, with an average of $231 Million/Qtr. That gives the stock a Peter Lynch-esque Price-Earnings/Growth (&#34;PEG&#34;) of 0.57. Granted that growth companies like Palantir tend to have wide fluctuations between expectations and reality, and sometimes in even expectations across quarters. But it is easy to see why earnings estimates are so optimistic for Palantir given the ever increasing focus on data analytics and security.</p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">The company&#39;s first profitable quarter (on a GAAP basis) did not get the attention it deserves, even though the stock popped close to 20% as an initial reaction. With a Total Addressable Market (&#34;TAM&#34;) of at least $119 Billion, it is safe to say the company is still scratching the surface. Far more aggressive projections call for the &#34;Big Data Analytics&#34; market to reach $650 Billion by 2029. Palantir is also smartly leveraging its expertise and contacts. For example, the recent news that its partnership with Microsoft Corporation (MSFT) is now expanding into public sector fits perfectly given the company&#39;s strong footing in the Government space already.</p><h2 style=\"text-align: left;\">What&#39;s my play?</h2><p style=\"text-align: left;\">Frequent readers of my article know I love selling puts at lower strike prices on stocks I&#39;d like to own. Palantir is one such name that I&#39;ve sold puts in the past (did not get assigned though). I am little wary of buying after a 30% run YTD and hence, I am considering selling the $7 put expiring July 21st, 2023. As of this writing, Mr. Market is willing to pay a premium of 35 cents per share, which would amount to $35 for every contract (100 shares) I am willing to sell.</p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">Should I execute this put:</p><ul><li><p>If I do get assigned, I will be buying Palantir stock at a 15% discount compared to the current market price.</p></li><li><p>If I don&#39;t get assigned, I will be getting a 5% return for my willingness to buy at a lower price. That is, $35 for setting aside $700 (per contract) in a cash-secured put transaction.</p></li></ul><p style=\"text-align: left;\">There are some risks to be aware of if you plan to use this strategy. For example,</p><ul><li><p>Palantir will report at least one earnings before this option chain expires and things are bound to get volatile around earnings.</p></li><li><p>On weakness, Palantir, or any stock for that matter, may go well below your strike price. The stock is trading a hair above the 200-Day moving average and the fact that all the commonly used moving averages are within 10% of each other says the stock is establishing a fairly strong base around the $8 region.The stock's Relative Strength Index (\"RSI\") is a hair below 50 and that suggests there is plenty of room to the upside if the stock manages to break above the current trading range. The upcoming earnings report on May 8th is likely to determine whether the stock's holding pattern around $8 acts as the launch pad for a run higher or is breached.PLTR Moving Avgs (Barchart.com)PLTR RSI (aiolux.com)Strong Balance SheetDespite being a public company for a little more than two years, Palantir has the following enviable traits:Cash on hand makes up 15% of the company's market cap. That is impressive for any company and even more so a company in its early growth phase where expenses typically outweigh a company's ability to bring in and retain cash.Palantir has zero long term debt. Yes, you read that right. Zero. And it has been that way for nearly two years now, which is almost as long as it has been a public company. This shows their confidence in their ability to raise cash through operations and their operational discipline.Since September 2021, Palantir's quarterly Free Cash Flow (\"FCF\") has been range bound between $200 Million and $300 Million as shown below, with an average of $231 Million/Qtr. Once again, the consistency shown this early in the game is encouraging.PLTR Debt (YCharts.com)PLTR FCF (Ycharts.com)Long Term Growth ProspectsEarnings are expected to grow at 70%/yr for the next five years. That gives the stock a Peter Lynch-esque Price-Earnings/Growth (\"PEG\") of 0.57. Granted that growth companies like Palantir tend to have wide fluctuations between expectations and reality, and sometimes in even expectations across quarters. But it is easy to see why earnings estimates are so optimistic for Palantir given the ever increasing focus on data analytics and security.The company's first profitable quarter (on a GAAP basis) did not get the attention it deserves, even though the stock popped close to 20% as an initial reaction. With a Total Addressable Market (\"TAM\") of at least $119 Billion, it is safe to say the company is still scratching the surface. Far more aggressive projections call for the \"Big Data Analytics\" market to reach $650 Billion by 2029. Palantir is also smartly leveraging its expertise and contacts. For example, the recent news that its partnership with Microsoft Corporation (MSFT) is now expanding into public sector fits perfectly given the company's strong footing in the Government space already.What's my play?Frequent readers of my article know I love selling puts at lower strike prices on stocks I'd like to own. Palantir is one such name that I've sold puts in the past (did not get assigned though). I am little wary of buying after a 30% run YTD and hence, I am considering selling the $7 put expiring July 21st, 2023. And as that happens, it can make the tech stock a more attractive buy, leading to better returns for investors.</p><h2>Why Palantir is a buy</h2><p>Palantir&#39;s business continues to grow. For 2023, the company is projecting revenue of between $2.18 billion and $2.23 billion, while remaining profitable. It does look as though the company has turned a corner, with profitability being the norm from here on out. While the stock did get a boost from the positive earnings report, it has given back much of those gains in the days following as concerns about the economy&#39;s future continue to weigh down growth stocks as a whole.</p><p>Palantir looks like a potentially underrated buy this year. I'm confident this is more than just a short-lived rally, as Palantir's business looks to be in strong shape. The company's recent quarterly results suggest that it could have more room to run.Here are three reasons more growth is likely ahead for the business and now may be a good time to buy the stock.1. Palantir's customer count rose 55% last yearOver the past several months, many businesses struggled and scaled back expenses as concerns rose that a recession may be on the horizon this year. But Palantir's business continued to consistently add to its customer count, suggesting that it is more resilient to the effects of inflation than other businesses.Palantir added 30 net new customers in Q4 2022, with total customers up 9% quarter over quarter and 55% year over year.Image source: Palantir Q4 investor presentation.While it has been growing at a decreasing rate, those are still some impressive numbers for Palantir. The nature of the company's software, which helps fight fraud and is used in counterterrorism operations, may make it essential to its customers, especially government agencies.2. Palantir's net dollar retention rate is high at 115%Another key metric that's important for the company is the net dollar retention rate, which looks at how much more customers spend versus the prior-year period and it is a good indicator of customer satisfaction. Palantir's net dollar retention rate was 115% in 2022, which was key to the company's strong 24% revenue growth last year.Image source: Palantir Q4 investor presentation.Having a strong retention rate such as Palantir's can make it easier to grow revenue since the company doesn't have to be entirely dependent on acquiring new customers for growth. But as seen from the earlier chart, Palantir hasn't had trouble doing that, anyway.3. Palantir's adjusted gross margins remain north of 80%One percentage that investors should always consider is gross margin. A high gross margin can enable a company to grow its bottom line more easily over time as the business grows. A low gross margin, meanwhile, can make it much more difficult because a company's overhead will need to be extremely well managed. With Palantir, the company's adjusted gross margin has been consistently over 80% in each of the past four quarters.Image source: Palantir Q4 investor presentation.Those high gross margins are a key reason Palantir hit a milestone this past quarter, reporting its first profitable quarter with earnings per share jumping to $0.01, up from a negative $0.08 in the prior-year period.If Palantir can continue to maintain this high adjusted gross margin, then its bottom line should continue to improve over time along with the company's growth. And as that happens, it can make the tech stock a more attractive buy, leading to better returns for investors.Why Palantir is a buyPalantir's business continues to grow. For 2023, the company is projecting revenue of between $2.18 billion and $2.23 billion, while remaining profitable. It does look as though the company has turned a corner, with profitability being the norm from here on out. While the stock did get a boost from the positive earnings report, it has given back much of those gains in the days following as concerns about the economy's future continue to weigh down growth stocks as a whole.Palantir looks like a potentially underrated buy this year. If the company is able to continue to produce profitable results while growing its business (at a time when many are struggling to do so), there should be much more bullishness surrounding the stock. At least two new models (the EC7 and ES8) are launching this year –  deliveries for the new EC7 are slated to kick off in May, followed by deliveries of the ES8 in June - and come in the wake of the recently released ET7 and ET5, both of which are “ramping well.”Rakesh also believes the end of the zero-Covid policies in China “could spur spending and help drive better than expected demand in 2023.”Rakesh does note some “key risks” to NIO’s expansion plans. These include growing competition, as traditional premium automakers get in on the action and bring to market new models. It also designed a high-end supercar called the E9 in 2016, but that vehicle was never mass produced. Li doesn&#39;t produce fully electric vehicles like Nio. Instead, it manufactures plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) that are partly powered by gas engines. Li currently sells two the L8 and L9 crossover SUVs. It discontinued its first vehicle, the Li One, in 2022.</p><p>Nio also built a network of battery swapping stations, which enable its drivers to quickly swap out their depleted batteries for fully charged ones for a monthly fee. Li has been building a traditional network of first-party supercharging stations, and it directs its drivers toward other third-party charging locations through its own digital map.</p><h2>Which company has been growing faster?</h2><p>Nio and Li aren&#39;t delivering as many vehicles per year as <b>Tesla</b> yet, but they&#39;re certainly a lot more productive than smaller U.S. EV makers like <b>Rivian</b> and <b>Lucid</b>. However, they both said the market&#39;s demand for vehicles remained robust, and expected their deliveries to stabilize over the long term as those headwinds dissipated and they rolled out new vehicles.</p><p>Nio&#39;s revenue rose 122% to 36.1 billion yuan ($5.7 billion) in 2021, while its vehicle margin expanded 740 basis points to 20.1%. Its adjusted net loss narrowed from 5.1 billion yuan to 3.0 billion yuan ($467 million). Nio hasn&#39;t posted its full-year earnings report, but analysts expect its revenue to rise 42% in 2022 and grow another 89% in 2023.</p><p>Li&#39;s revenue grew 186% to 27.0 billion yuan ($4.2 billion) in 2021. Its vehicle margin rose 420 basis points to 20.6%, and it posted an adjusted net profit of 780 million yuan ($122 million), compared to a net loss of 281 million yuan in 2020. Li also hasn&#39;t posted its full-year numbers yet, but analysts expect its revenue to rise 68% in 2022 and grow 106% in 2023.</p><p>We should take all those estimates with a grain of salt, but China&#39;s relaxation of its COVID restrictions might remove some of the biggest near-term obstacles for Nio and Li Auto.</p><p>In addition, a potential agreement between U.S. and Chinese securities regulators could prevent U.S.-listed Chinese stocks from being delisted and bring back some growth-oriented investors.</p><p>For now, both stocks look dirt cheap. Nio and Li trade at 1.1 times and 1.5 times their 2023 sales, respectively. Tesla, which lost nearly two thirds of its value over the past 12 months, still trades at 3.4 times its 2023 sales.</p><h2>The winner: Li Auto</h2><p>Nio might seem like a slightly better value than Li right now, but I believe Li&#39;s stronger growth, slightly higher vehicle margins, and higher profits make it a more compelling play on China&#39;s booming EV market.</p><p>Li probably won&#39;t garner much attention from investors until interest rates cool and investors develop a healthy appetite for speculative growth stocks again. So the stock&#39;s significant fall this year looks unjustified.</p><p>Apart from broader macroeconomic concerns relating to the slowdown and rising rates, another factor that affected Nio stock is China&#39;s strict COVID-19 restrictions. News related to easing of its zero-COVID norms sent Chinese stocks soaring recently.</p><p>At the same time, the Russia-Ukraine war has put further pressure on an already tight supply chain. These supply chain issues have hurt EV stocks significantly. Rising battery costs hurt Nio&#39;s margins in the third quarter.</p><p>Although there are industry- and market-related headwinds, Nio is trying to manage them well. And the company has been making progress on multiple fronts.</p><h2>Growing footprints in Europe</h2><p>In addition to the China market, Nio is expanding its footprints into the European market. It entered the Norwegian market in September 2021. In October 2022, it held its launch event, Nio Berlin, where it unveiled details of its products for more European markets, including Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, and Sweden.</p><p>To establish its footprint in Europe, the company intends to launch three new models in the European market. The ET7, EL7, and ET5 launches received a lot of attention. ET7 deliveries have already begun, and deliveries of the EL7 and ET5 are expected to commence in January 2023.</p><p>Nio intends to build 120 battery-swap stations across Europe by the end of 2023. It has also established a research and development unit in Berlin. And it plans to open additional Nio houses and spaces in 10 European cities in the coming future.</p><p>Although European carmakers lead in traditional vehicles -- not only in Europe, but in several countries globally as well -- Nio has a window of opportunity in the emerging EV segment. The company has come up with an innovative subscription model for Europe, with terms from just one month to 60 months, to make inroads into this key market.</p><h2>New businesses</h2><p>In addition to EVs, Nio is entering into some new key businesses. The ones directly related to its EV business are making batteries and chipsets in house. This will not only ensure smooth supply, but also help drive margins. Nio is also entering into the smartphone business.</p><p>As these businesses scale up, they should add to the company&#39;s growth. Further, the company can leverage its existing R&amp;D investment and supply chain across all its businesses.</p><p>However, there are significant initial capital investments required to develop these. During the third-quarter call, William Li, Nio&#39;s CEO, noted that investments in these new businesses would be around 3 billion RMB to 4 billion RMB in 2023. Additionally, as Nio plans to expand its presence in Europe, marketing and promotional activities will also increase, which will further increase its marketing costs.</p><h2>Is it time to buy Nio stock?</h2><p>Nio&#39;s consistent delivery growth, its expansion plans, and the steep correction in its stock price make it attractive. However, the consistent growth in Nio&#39;s deliveries, its focus on quality offerings, and its growth plans inspire confidence in its long-term success.</p><p>If you already own Nio stock, continue holding it, as 2023 is surely not the time to sell it. Does the steep fall show genuine concerns about the company, or is this a buying opportunity?Consistent growth in deliveriesNio, which started producing its EVs in June 2018, has been growing its deliveries consistently. The China-based company has delivered 273,741 EVs so far. In November 2022, the company delivered 14,178 electric cars, a 30% year-over-year increase.Data source: Nio. So the stock's significant fall this year looks unjustified.Apart from broader macroeconomic concerns relating to the slowdown and rising rates, another factor that affected Nio stock is China's strict COVID-19 restrictions. News related to easing of its zero-COVID norms sent Chinese stocks soaring recently.At the same time, the Russia-Ukraine war has put further pressure on an already tight supply chain. These supply chain issues have hurt EV stocks significantly. Rising battery costs hurt Nio's margins in the third quarter.Although there are industry- and market-related headwinds, Nio is trying to manage them well. And the company has been making progress on multiple fronts.Growing footprints in EuropeIn addition to the China market, Nio is expanding its footprints into the European market. It entered the Norwegian market in September 2021. In October 2022, it held its launch event, Nio Berlin, where it unveiled details of its products for more European markets, including Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, and Sweden.To establish its footprint in Europe, the company intends to launch three new models in the European market. The ET7, EL7, and ET5 launches received a lot of attention. ET7 deliveries have already begun, and deliveries of the EL7 and ET5 are expected to commence in January 2023.Nio intends to build 120 battery-swap stations across Europe by the end of 2023. It has also established a research and development unit in Berlin. And it plans to open additional Nio houses and spaces in 10 European cities in the coming future.Although European carmakers lead in traditional vehicles -- not only in Europe, but in several countries globally as well -- Nio has a window of opportunity in the emerging EV segment. Further, the company can leverage its existing R&D investment and supply chain across all its businesses.However, there are significant initial capital investments required to develop these. During the third-quarter call, William Li, Nio's CEO, noted that investments in these new businesses would be around 3 billion RMB to 4 billion RMB in 2023. Additionally, as Nio plans to expand its presence in Europe, marketing and promotional activities will also increase, which will further increase its marketing costs.Is it time to buy Nio stock?Nio's consistent delivery growth, its expansion plans, and the steep correction in its stock price make it attractive. (NYSE:PLTR). For investors, it has been a total disaster and it is frustrating to see the lack of any kind of real rebound out of the single-digits. We continue to believe in the company long-term, but the company is not necessarily the stock.</p><p>The fact is that it is going to be a long road to real profits. That is why the market hates this stock. Further, the other key metric lines of interest like customer counts, revenues, etc., all seem to be slowing their rate of growth. This was a rapid grower just a year ago. But the world has quickly changed, and all things innovative that do not make a profit have been crushed. Folks, while all manner of financial engineering to show improved &#39;cash flow&#39;, and moderate EBITDA movement, the market does not care anymore. It wants to see a clear path to profitability. While the company has worked, or is starting to work, to rein in spending and to reduce the very dilutive stock-based compensation, the Street is assigning little faith.</p><p>Right now, even though we have outlined a possible Santa Claus rally into year end, we think that stocks like this are going to contend with heavy tax loss selling. The market as a whole has seen most who wanted to sell already sell, but for a trading stock like this, it creates further negative catalysts. If you are an investor, it is hard to not buy at $6-$7 per share. But $7 per share now is more expensive than $7 per share was just months ago, when you account for more shares, and normalization of growth. That is the problem. We continue to like trading swings on the stock long and short. As investors go, it is going to be a long road.</p><h3>The path is difficult, but not impossible</h3><p>Despite what has happened, we continue to like the company long-term, but Palantir stock is just not working right now. On top of the continued dilution, and now the pressure of tax loss harvesting, the company is also facing slowing commercial demand, and governments that will likely reduce spending due to lower tax revenues. Much of the world is already facing or in some cases may be in a recession. The United States has been resilient, but we suspect we see inflation coming down, and the deleterious impacts of increased pressure on consumers and businesses in this more challenging economic climate. With this reality the high level of growth seems to be grinding to a halt, and could stall further in 2023. Potential game-changing names like this that do not make real profit have all been obliterated.</p><p>A lot of traders do not realize (or do not care) that Palantir is not a new company. It has been around a long time, but became public in the height of the tech stock mania as we were coming out of COVID. The thing is that stocks like Palantir are indeed often extremely expensive in the early stages. The innovation space is unique. For a long time, the Street could not value them on an earnings basis because there are no or very little earnings. The Street looked to the future based on sales, cash flows, etc. One of the largest reasons stocks like this have been crushed, besides a &#39;tough market&#39; is interest rates. Few have been spared. The concern is that with rates rising, money-losing stocks are out of favor. Debt becomes more expensive, and many companies will suffer. And yet, Palantir has one key advantage. It is still a money loser, though getting there toward sustained breakeven operations, but it has an incredible balance-sheet position.</p><h3>No debt</h3><p>For years, Palantir may lose money or hover around breakeven. $7 is a level where we like this name, with all issues baked in. It is speculative, but we like it. Operationally, we are seeing some positive signs, and some negative signs. The company is not bleeding out and losing money hand over first. In fact, Given that there is no debt at all and a ton of cash on hand ($2.4 billion), Palantir is in strong shape to weather any recessionary pressures in 2023. It should not need to borrow any money, so in many ways, the high rate issue, for now, is somewhat moot. Though if their customers rely on debt to fund contracts, then it becomes a bit of a hidden risk. However, the balance sheet is a strength. The weakness is slowing growth.</p><h3>Slowing growth</h3><p>One thing that has investors concerned is the slowing growth. The company had been growing like a spreading wildfire. It is still in growth mode, but the pace has stalled. In the recently reported quarter, performance was strong on the top line and actually was ahead of consensus estimates. Total revenue grew 22% year-over-year to $478 million, beating estimates by almost $3 million. That is strong. But those costs continue to weigh, and the cumulative impact of dilution is anchoring earnings potential. This is evidenced by Palantir&#39;s profitability being lower than expected by $0.01 per share, and worse, guidance was less than consensus.</p><p>Both of Palantir&#39;s segments, the government and commercial segments, had shown incredible growth over the years. The commercial revenue stream specifically has been growing rapidly, while government results have been slowing for several quarters now. Deceleration of revenue growth is definitely a negative for a company without earnings. That said, U.S. growth is still strong. U.S. revenue rose 31% from last year, and the company grew overall customers by 66% year-over-year. Internationally the story is weaker, and likely reflects the resilience of the U.S. economy still despite global weakness.</p><p>Government revenue was still up 20% from a year ago, while U.S. commercial revenue grew 53%. Look this is certainly strong growth. The Street is fickle however, as despite it being strong reported growth, the pace has stalled. But there are positives that we feel are masked to some degree, such as in margins. Gross margin was 77%, very strong, though operating margin a bit lower. Adjusted income from operations, excluding stock-based compensation and related employer payroll taxes was $81 million, representing an adjusted operating margin of 17%. The target is really around 20%. The company lost $62 million in the quarter operationally otherwise. Now, the company likes to boast its cash flow but it does back out a number of key metrics that while as reported they are burning more cash than may be thought, on their adjusted basis, free cash flow was $37 million for the quarter, and the 8th-straight quarter for which this was positive on the adjusted metrics. Ultimately, this is what the Street will care about. For now it gets many quarters to show its potential. The Street has doubts, hence a $7 per share price tag. Perhaps the more appropriate measure is the price-to-sales ratio, but not only is this still very high, the market has basically said it is no longer willing to pay for sky high multiples. Keep that in mind. At 8X sales, the valuation has improved dramatically from where it was last year, but this is still high. The price-to-book has been improving and we are watching this as well as EV/EBIT values. Some of this stretched valuation can be justified by the still strong growth metrics.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1ce1cbeed3f6c3c8d0a34c1fa114d009\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"923\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Seeking Alpha PLTR Growth Metrics</p><p>So these are still solid grades though down from the past A+ values. The performance is coming down, and that reduction, that slower growth (even though it is still strong), builds in further discounts. Rapid growth has to lead somewhere. That is the mantra.</p><p>It is a long road from translating the growth metrics into tangible value, and shareholder returns. This is why the stock is stuck in the mud in the single-digits.</p><h3>Looking ahead</h3><p>So as we have been trying to hammer home, the growth concerns are real. The thing is that the Q4 guidance was pretty weak relative to expectations, despite slightly increasing the full-year outlook. For Q4, management guided to a base case of $503-505 million in revenue. This was below consensus of $506 million, but they upped their adjusted income from operations for the year by about 10% to $385 million.</p><p>Longer-term, the next few years, we think the company can still deliver 30% annual revenue growth. This will depend on how steep of a recession we get and how companies and governments value Palantir&#39;s AI decision making services. It remains to be seen but we would like to see more work done on margins to boost cash flow and to get to real earnings. Like it or not, this is what the Street wants to see. Margins need to improve and growth must remain to offset stock-based compensation. This is still a problem, and a problem for many similar companies. While Palantir&#39;s technology should help governments and businesses alike operate more efficiently, and therefore more profitably, we could see reduced spending on services like this as recession risks are mounting.</p><h3>Final thoughts</h3><p>The growth rate is slowing some, but the growth is strong. Palantir&#39;s valuation is still expensive, but we think the key indicator will be margins. Better margins drive earnings potential. As we head into year end, expect added pressure from tax loss harvesting. We still like trading the stock for when it runs with a hot market on good days, but for now, we think it will be difficult for the stock to advance much past $9-$10 without real movement on its performance on earnings potential. At the same time, should top line growth or customer count trends weaken further, the stock could see another wave lower. But the world has quickly changed, and all things innovative that do not make a profit have been crushed. Folks, while all manner of financial engineering to show improved 'cash flow', and moderate EBITDA movement, the market does not care anymore. It wants to see a clear path to profitability. While the company has worked, or is starting to work, to rein in spending and to reduce the very dilutive stock-based compensation, the Street is assigning little faith.Right now, even though we have outlined a possible Santa Claus rally into year end, we think that stocks like this are going to contend with heavy tax loss selling. The market as a whole has seen most who wanted to sell already sell, but for a trading stock like this, it creates further negative catalysts. If you are an investor, it is hard to not buy at $6-$7 per share. But $7 per share now is more expensive than $7 per share was just months ago, when you account for more shares, and normalization of growth. That is the problem. We continue to like trading swings on the stock long and short. The thing is that stocks like Palantir are indeed often extremely expensive in the early stages. The innovation space is unique. For a long time, the Street could not value them on an earnings basis because there are no or very little earnings. The Street looked to the future based on sales, cash flows, etc. One of the largest reasons stocks like this have been crushed, besides a 'tough market' is interest rates. Few have been spared. The concern is that with rates rising, money-losing stocks are out of favor. Debt becomes more expensive, and many companies will suffer. And yet, Palantir has one key advantage. It is still a money loser, though getting there toward sustained breakeven operations, but it has an incredible balance-sheet position.No debtFor years, Palantir may lose money or hover around breakeven. $7 is a level where we like this name, with all issues baked in. It is speculative, but we like it. Operationally, we are seeing some positive signs, and some negative signs. The company is not bleeding out and losing money hand over first.
