(Getty Images/iStockphoto)\nU.S. investors remain bullish, despite rumblings out of China and the spike in delta variant infections.\nCloud companies — those at the forefront of the shift in computing power to distributed models over the internet — are expected to grow at a rapid clip over the next several years, and four of the five largest exchange traded funds covering the space are close to hitting record highs.\nBelow is a screen of stocks held by those ETFs, showing which are expected to increase their sales the most through 2023. In an industry with many players at relatively early stages, increases in sales, rather than in earnings, might be the best driver of stock prices.\nTo begin the screen, we looked at the five largest cloud ETFs:\nSource: FactSet\nETFs might be your best way to take a broad approach for a long-term play on the cloud revolution. Most of the focus is likely to center on Chairman Jerome Powell’s news conference at 2:30 p.m. Here’s what to watch:
\n
Taper timing
\n
Officials are likely to receive a formal staff briefing around when to start paring their monthly purchases of $80 billion in Treasury securities and $40 billion in mortgage securities, and how quickly to reduce, or taper, them.
\n
The Fed began buying large quantities of the securities in March 2020, when the Covid-19 pandemic triggered a near-meltdown in financial markets. With the Fed’s short-term interest rate at zero, the purchases are designed to provide additional stimulus by holding down long-term interest rates.
\n
Some officials are concerned that a burst of inflation this year from bottlenecks associated with reopening the economy will prove more durable than previously anticipated. These policy makers are eager to start the taper, in part because they and their colleagues have said they aren’t likely to consider raising interest rates from near zero until they are done tapering the asset purchases.
\n
Another camp thinks recent price pressures will subside and could leave the Fed in the same position that it faced for much of the past decade, in which global forces kept inflation below 2% even with historically low interest rates. They are worried that accelerating plans to wind down the asset purchases could raise questions among investors about the Fed’s commitment to achieving its economic goals.
\n
Because Mr. Powell has pledged to provide ample notice to financial markets before the Fed starts tapering to avoid catching investors by surprise, the central bank looks unlikely to start the process now or at its next meeting in September. Mr. Powell’s press conference will be heavily scrutinized for clues on how officials judge recent economic progress. In April, he said the Fed was “a long way from” its tapering goals, and he characterized the economy as “still a ways off” from them in June.
\n
Purchase pace
\n
Officials also must consider the pace of any reductions. Some officials have discussed concluding the purchases around October 2022 so they could lift rates soon thereafter if the recovery is stronger or inflation is higher than now anticipated.
\n
During a prior asset-purchase program that ended in 2014, the Fed shrank its purchases in modest, equal amounts over the course of 10 months. It then waited another 14 months before raising interest rates.
\n
Another tactical question centers on whether to reduce the pace of Treasurys and mortgage-backed securities equally. Some officials have raised concerns about rising home prices and are pressing to stop purchases of mortgage bonds sooner.
\n
But Mr. Powell and other officials have poured cold water on those concerns in recent weeks. They have said mortgage buying, by purchasing longer-dated assets, provides a way to more broadly stimulate the economy and isn’t focused squarely on housing markets.
\n
“If the housing market has you really worried, that’s an argument for just tapering everything sooner and faster,” said William English, a former senior Fed economist who is now a professor at the Yale School of Management.
\n
Inflation outlook
\n
For a third straight month in June, inflation ran hotter than many economists had expected. The Labor Department’s consumer-price index increased 5.4% from a year ago, the highest 12-month rate since August 2008.
\n
Mr. Powell said two weeks ago that many of the elevated price pressures can still be traced to goods and services affected by supply-chain bottlenecks and other pandemic-driven upheaval. As a result, he said it would be too soon for the Fed to abandon its earlier expectation that prices will return to their 2% target on their own and to raise rates to cool down demand and reduce inflation faster.
\n
But Mr. Powell could face questions over how long the central bank and its 12-member rate-setting committee feels it would take to revisit their projections. Price pressures in some sectors of the economy where inflation had been subdued over the past year, including residential rents, have picked in recent months.
\n
Delta variant
\n
Mr. Powell is also likely to be pressed on how the recent increase in Covid-19 cases among unvaccinated populations could reshape the central bank’s growth forecasts for the rest of the year. While a return to shutdowns and other state-mandated restrictions on activity seem less likely than a year ago, increased hesitancy on the part of consumers to return to normal spending routines could complicate the economic outlook.
\n
Since Fed officials last met in June, government-bond prices have jumped, a sign that investors are less confident about long-term growth prospects and less worried about inflation.
\n
Yields, which rise when bond prices fall, climbed sharply earlier in the year, lifted by expectations that vaccinations and fiscal stimulus would spur an economic boom. After hitting a 13-month high of 1.75% at the end of March, the 10-year Treasury yield has declined—to 1.57% on June 16, after the Fed concluded its previous meeting, and to 1.24%, a five-month low, when the Fed’s meeting began on Tuesday.
","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; The Labor Department’s consumer-price index increased 5.4% from a year ago, the highest 12-month rate since August 2008.\nMr. Powell said two weeks ago that many of the elevated price pressures can still be traced to goods and services affected by supply-chain bottlenecks and other pandemic-driven upheaval. As a result, he said it would be too soon for the Fed to abandon its earlier expectation that prices will return to their 2% target on their own and to raise rates to cool down demand and reduce inflation faster.\nBut Mr. Powell could face questions over how long the central bank and its 12-member rate-setting committee feels it would take to revisit their projections. Price pressures in some sectors of the economy where inflation had been subdued over the past year, including residential rents, have picked in recent months.\nDelta variant\nMr. Powell is also likely to be pressed on how the recent increase in Covid-19 cases among unvaccinated populations could reshape the central bank’s growth forecasts for the rest of the year. While a return to shutdowns and other state-mandated restrictions on activity seem less likely than a year ago, increased hesitancy on the part of consumers to return to normal spending routines could complicate the economic outlook.\nSince Fed officials last met in June, government-bond prices have jumped, a sign that investors are less confident about long-term growth prospects and less worried about inflation.\nYields, which rise when bond prices fall, climbed sharply earlier in the year, lifted by expectations that vaccinations and fiscal stimulus would spur an economic boom. After hitting a 13-month high of 1.75% at the end of March, the 10-year Treasury yield has declined—to 1.57% on June 16, after the Fed concluded its previous meeting, and to 1.24%, a five-month low, when the Fed’s meeting began on Tuesday.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":15,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":175419569,"gmtCreate":1627046098251,"gmtModify":1703483169022,"author":{"id":"4087771638391430","authorId":"4087771638391430","name":"Tanwl1","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1763b1975bb18dbb1e545a65e8596923","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Like n comment ","listText":"Like n comment ","text":"Like n comment","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":5,"commentSize":3,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/175419569","repostId":"1193325824","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":203,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":142006979,"gmtCreate":1626101869191,"gmtModify":1703753501065,"author":{"id":"4087771638391430","authorId":"4087771638391430","name":"Tanwl1","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1763b1975bb18dbb1e545a65e8596923","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Like n comment","listText":"Like n comment","text":"Like n comment","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":9,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/142006979","repostId":"1105917995","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":37,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":835411528,"gmtCreate":1629731153864,"gmtModify":1676530115753,"author":{"id":"4087771638391430","authorId":"4087771638391430","name":"Tanwl1","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1763b1975bb18dbb1e545a65e8596923","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Like pls","listText":"Like pls","text":"Like pls","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":6,"commentSize":2,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/835411528","repostId":"2161747692","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":47,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":894052566,"gmtCreate":1628779158255,"gmtModify":1676529853199,"author":{"id":"4087771638391430","authorId":"4087771638391430","name":"Tanwl1","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1763b1975bb18dbb1e545a65e8596923","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Like n comment ","listText":"Like n comment ","text":"Like n comment","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":6,"commentSize":2,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/894052566","repostId":"1187002992","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1187002992","pubTimestamp":1628778486,"share":"https://www.laohu8.com/m/news/1187002992?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-08-12 22:28","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Alibaba Sets Up Harassment Hotline as Rape Probe Nears End","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1187002992","media":"Bloomberg","summary":"(Bloomberg) -- Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. will set up a hotline and create a team dedicated to inves","content":"
(Bloomberg) -- Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. will set up a hotline and create a team dedicated to investigating sexual harassment complaints, after an employee accused her manager of rape and ignited a debate about misogyny across China’s tech industry.
\n
The e-commerce giant launched an investigation when an Alibaba employee accused her manager of sexually assaulting her after a night of heavy drinking while on a business trip in July. Over the past week, favored equities GameStop (GME) and AMC (AMC) have plummeted, dropping about 10% and 21% respectively.
\n
The decline affirms the fears of observers who had warned that a pullback was likely for shares elevated by what some consider speculative trading.
\n
In a new interview, Franklin Templeton (BEN) CEO Jenny Johnson — whose investment firm manages more than $1.5 trillion in assets — criticized the trading as risky investing that could produce lucrative highs or devastating lows. However, she said she's \"optimistic\" about new trading technology that helps everyday people access the market, predicting the trend will give traders opportunities otherwise exclusive to the rich.
\n
\"On the meme stocks, I never like investing where there isn't fundamentals behind it,\" she says.
\n
\"I think that the challenge with things like the meme stocks is yeah, if you time it right, you're going to do great,\" adds Johnson, who became CEO at Franklin Templeton last February. \"On the other hand, you could lose everything.\"
\n
To be sure, shares in meme stock darlings GameStop and AMC remain well above where they stood at the outset of the year. GameStop has leapt more than 900% over that period, and AMC has shot up more than 1,750%.
\n
Shareholders in AMC showed their strength last week when online opposition to the potential issuance of new shares prompted CEO Adam Aron to cancel a vote on the proposal.
\n
Overall, the stock frenzy has fueled a record flow of money into the market from retail investors. Last month, the traders bought almost $28 billion of stocks and exchange-traded funds on a net basis, the largest amount in a single month since at least 2014, according to data from Vanda Research that was reported by the Wall Street Journal.
\n
But wealthy investors continue to dominate the stock market. Over the past week, favored equities GameStop (GME) and AMC (AMC) have plummeted, dropping about 10% and 21% respectively.\nThe decline affirms the fears of observers who had warned that a pullback was likely for shares elevated by what some consider speculative trading.\nIn a new interview, Franklin Templeton (BEN) CEO Jenny Johnson — whose investment firm manages more than $1.5 trillion in assets — criticized the trading as risky investing that could produce lucrative highs or devastating lows. However, she said she's \"optimistic\" about new trading technology that helps everyday people access the market, predicting the trend will give traders opportunities otherwise exclusive to the rich.\n\"On the meme stocks, I never like investing where there isn't fundamentals behind it,\" she says.\n\"I think that the challenge with things like the meme stocks is yeah, if you time it right, you're going to do great,\" adds Johnson, who became CEO at Franklin Templeton last February. \"On the other hand, you could lose everything.\"\nTo be sure, shares in meme stock darlings GameStop and AMC remain well above where they stood at the outset of the year. GameStop has leapt more than 900% over that period, and AMC has shot up more than 1,750%.\nShareholders in AMC showed their strength last week when online opposition to the potential issuance of new shares prompted CEO Adam Aron to cancel a vote on the proposal.\nOverall, the stock frenzy has fueled a record flow of money into the market from retail investors. Last month, the traders bought almost $28 billion of stocks and exchange-traded funds on a net basis, the largest amount in a single month since at least 2014, according to data from Vanda Research that was reported by the Wall Street Journal.\nBut wealthy investors continue to dominate the stock market. The wealthiest 10% of U.S. families own 84% of overall equities and 92% of directly held equities, according to a 2019 Federal Reserve survey analyzed by The New York Times.\nA GameStop storefront is shown before opening Thursday morning, Jan. 28, 2021, in Dallas. Coatue also added to its bet on vaccine maker Moderna, while Stephen Mandel’s Lone Pine Capital took a new stake in the biotech company worth more than $900 million. These purchases were a reversal from the first quarter, when many hedge funds cut positions inWork From Homecompanies like Peloton and Zoom as vaccinations began to ramp up in the U.S. That, in turn, fueled wagers on companies that had been hardest-hit by travel restrictions and remote work.
\n
Tiger and Coatue also increased their stakes in Zoom in the three months through June, their 13F filings revealed. The two funds, along with D1 Capital Partners, were among those that added to positions in Peloton, while Viking Global Investors made a new bet on the exercise equipment company.
\n
13F filings also showed that funds including Soros Fund Management and Temasek snapped up shares of fintech companies. Marqeta was a top new buy for Soros, while Temasek disclosed new positions in SoFi Technologies, Flywire and Payoneer Global. Marqeta and SoFi tumbled last week after reporting disappointing second-quarter results. Temasek also snapped up shares in two new BlackRock carbon transition ETFs (LCTU and LCTD), while Soros took a new position in electric-vehicle producer Proterra, as clean energy continues to be a prominent trend among investors.
\n
Coatue, Viking and Gabe Plotkin’s Melvin Capital Management also added new positions in Beijing-based JD.com Inc. in the quarter, a move that would prove to be rather unfortunate as shares of the giant online vendor have slumped 16% since June 30. Chinese shares have tumbled since June as Beijing banned for-profit tutoring companies and ordered more than two dozen tech firms to carry out internal inspections and address issues such as data security.
\n
Some, such as Soros were either lucky or good in cutting their exposure to Chinese ADRs in the second quarter, ahead of the furious selloff. Soros Fund Management exited many of its investments in Chinese ADRs including Baidu, Vipshop Holdings, Tencent Music Entertainment Group and IQiyi, positions it snapped up during the collapse of Archegos Capital Management in March and April, as noted previously.
\n
Other funds also dumped China-based companies with listings in the U.S. D1 Capital sold its 25-million-share stake in New Oriental Education & Technology Group, while Soroban Capital Partners exited its 2.06-million-share stake in Alibaba. Soroban’s largest new positions favored tech, with the top three additions being Facebook, Twitter and Netflix.
\n
Some other notable 13F findings:
\n
\n
Michael Burry, of “The Big Short” fame, owned puts on Cathie Wood’s ARK Innovation ETF and increased its Tesla puts (more here).
\n
Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway added to just three positions in the quarter and trimmed its holdings in several companies, including a full exit of controversial Alzheimer’s drug developer Biogen. As firstnoted earlier, Berkshire’s only new position in the quarter, 1.55 million shares of Organon was the result of a spinoff of the women’s health pharmaceutical company from Berkshire holding Merck. Its most significant addition was a 21% increase in its position in grocer Kroger. Besides Biogen, exits included Liberty Global’s Class A shares and Axalta Coating Systems, while Berkshire trimmed positions in Marsh & McLennan, Abbvie, General Motors and Bristol-Myers Squibb.
\n
Seth Klarman’s long-standing investment in Rupert Murdoch’s media empire finally came to an end during the second quarter. Baupost Group sold its entire Fox Corp. stake, including 7.6 million Class A shares and 5.7 million Class B shares with a combined market value of $446 million at the end of March.
\n
Carl Icahn, who runs a concentrated portfolio with just 17 reportable investments, sold all of his 9.59 million shares of Tenneco in the quarter. He also has a new undisclosed position in an unnamed stock -- an unusual step that requires a separate filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
\n
Dan Loeb's Third Point added SentinelOne Class A to its investments and exited IAA in the second quarter. The fund also added to its holdings in Intel, boosting its stake to 14 million shares from 1 million, while decreasing its stake in Charter Communications Class A. Upstart Holdings was Third Point's biggest holding, representing 9.8% of disclosed assets
\n
Elliott Investment Management’s largest purchases of the quarter included a 3-million-share buy of Twitter. The increase in shares comes despite Elliott partner Jesse Cohn’s departure from Twitter’s board on June 9. He originally joined the board as part of a partnership Twitter entered with Elliott and Sliver Lake on March 9, 2020.
\n
Singapore state-owned investment fund Temasek Holdings’s largest new purchase in the quarter was a 4.84-million-share position in Airbnb. Airbnb reported strong second-quarter earnings last week that were offset by tepid guidance, according to analysts. Temasek also disclosed new positions in SoFi Technologies, Flywire and Payoneer Global.
\n
\n
Here are some other moves made by prominent funds tracked by once, the \"smart money\" was not caught off guard by the resurgent covid pandemic, and as a barrage of 13F filings published today showed, during the second quarter hedge funds loaded up on companies that would benefit from a new wave of the pandemic even before the delta variant began to rapidly spread throughout the U.S.\nAs Bloomberg summarizes, Chase Coleman’s Tiger Global Management and Philippe Laffont’s Coatue Management both increased their stakes in food delivery service DoorDash in the second quarter. That, in turn, fueled wagers on companies that had been hardest-hit by travel restrictions and remote work.\nTiger and Coatue also increased their stakes in Zoom in the three months through June, their 13F filings revealed. The two funds, along with D1 Capital Partners, were among those that added to positions in Peloton, while Viking Global Investors made a new bet on the exercise equipment company.\n13F filings also showed that funds including Soros Fund Management and Temasek snapped up shares of fintech companies. Marqeta was a top new buy for Soros, while Temasek disclosed new positions in SoFi Technologies, Flywire and Payoneer Global. Marqeta and SoFi tumbled last week after reporting disappointing second-quarter results. Temasek also snapped up shares in two new BlackRock carbon transition ETFs (LCTU and LCTD), while Soros took a new position in electric-vehicle producer Proterra, as clean energy continues to be a prominent trend among investors.\nCoatue, Viking and Gabe Plotkin’s Melvin Capital Management also added new positions in Beijing-based JD.com Inc. in the quarter, a move that would prove to be rather unfortunate as shares of the giant online vendor have slumped 16% since June 30. Chinese shares have tumbled since June as Beijing banned for-profit tutoring companies and ordered more than two dozen tech firms to carry out internal inspections and address issues such as data security.\nSome, such as Soros were either lucky or good in cutting their exposure to Chinese ADRs in the second quarter, ahead of the furious selloff. Soros Fund Management exited many of its investments in Chinese ADRs including Baidu, Vipshop Holdings, Tencent Music Entertainment Group and IQiyi, positions it snapped up during the collapse of Archegos Capital Management in March and April, as noted previously.\nOther funds also dumped China-based companies with listings in the U.S. D1 Capital sold its 25-million-share stake in New Oriental Education & Technology Group, while Soroban Capital Partners exited its 2.06-million-share stake in Alibaba. Soroban’s largest new positions favored tech, with the top three additions being Facebook, Twitter and Netflix.\nSome other notable 13F findings:\n\nMichael Burry, of “The Big Short” fame, owned puts on Cathie Wood’s ARK Innovation ETF and increased its Tesla puts (more here).\nWarren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway added to just three positions in the quarter and trimmed its holdings in several companies, including a full exit of controversial Alzheimer’s drug developer Biogen. Besides Biogen, exits included Liberty Global’s Class A shares and Axalta Coating Systems, while Berkshire trimmed positions in Marsh & McLennan, Abbvie, General Motors and Bristol-Myers Squibb.\nSeth Klarman’s long-standing investment in Rupert Murdoch’s media empire finally came to an end during the second quarter. Baupost Group sold its entire Fox Corp. stake, including 7.6 million Class A shares and 5.7 million Class B shares with a combined market value of $446 million at the end of March.\nCarl Icahn, who runs a concentrated portfolio with just 17 reportable investments, sold all of his 9.59 million shares of Tenneco in the quarter. He also has a new undisclosed position in an unnamed stock -- an unusual step that requires a separate filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.\nDan Loeb's Third Point added SentinelOne Class A to its investments and exited IAA in the second quarter. The fund also added to its holdings in Intel, boosting its stake to 14 million shares from 1 million, while decreasing its stake in Charter Communications Class A. Upstart Holdings was Third Point's biggest holding, representing 9.8% of disclosed assets\nElliott Investment Management’s largest purchases of the quarter included a 3-million-share buy of Twitter. The increase in shares comes despite Elliott partner Jesse Cohn’s departure from Twitter’s board on June 9. He originally joined the board as part of a partnership Twitter entered with Elliott and Sliver Lake on March 9, 2020.\nSingapore state-owned investment fund Temasek Holdings’s largest new purchase in the quarter was a 4.84-million-share position in Airbnb. Airbnb reported strong second-quarter earnings last week that were offset by tepid guidance, according to analysts. Temasek also disclosed new positions in SoFi Technologies, Flywire and Payoneer Global.\n\nHere are some other moves made by prominent funds tracked by Bloomberg:\nAPPALOOSA\n\nTop new buys: UBER, iPod HiF","content":"
Apple needs to cut the prices of Apple TV or send it the way of other retired products like iPod HiFi and the high-end version of its HomePod speakers, wrote Mark Gurman in the latest edition of his newsletter.
\n
What Happened: Gurman noted the coming of the “age of streaming” and the abundance of services like those offered by Netflix, Amazon.com, and Hulu.
\n
This, according to Gurman, has made Apple TV a largely “pointless accessory.” The analyst buttressed his point by sharing 2020 data from Strategy Analytics that found that Apple TV only held 2% of the streaming device market.
\n
“One idea for keeping the Apple TV relevant would be to bundle an Apple TV+ subscription indefinitely at no additional charge,” wrote Gurman.
\n
Gurman’s other ideas include cutting the price of the box or turning it into a 4K capable “stick.”
\n
Why It Matters: Gurman’s suggestions are unlikely to come to fruition anytime soon.
