He said the application process for the money is designed to prod companies to “express to us their vision for how we drive economic development, how we drive competitiveness, not just at a local level, not just at a state level, but at a regional level.”

The funds come from about $53 billion put aside in the CHIPs and Science Act. The administration goal: achieving both a revitalization of the U.S. semiconductor industry— as well as broader political and economic goals that officials say will produce hundreds of thousands of jobs in the U.S.

One model? “I look to our experience in rebuilding and bringing back from the edge of complete collapse the city of Detroit” Graves said, referencing his time during the Obama administration as the leader of the federal government’s efforts after the city filed for Chapter 9 bankruptcy in 2013. He also mention a government funded network of manufacturing innovation institutes called Manufacturing USA.

But the question that remains is whether it’s possible to achieve these goals all at once. Already, some industry voices have reportedly been grumbling about the many restrictions on the money with others pointing out that the most successful projects historically have had limited instead of broader objectives.

The new law has $39 billion earmarked for semiconductor manufacturers; the application process opened this past week. An additional $11 billion is set to go to companies as well as universities and others for chip research and design beginning later this year. The law also includes an investment tax credit of up to 25% towards a manufacturer’s capital expenditures.

‘We're already a hub’

Another point made by those who have a stake: these hubs already exist. Thus, they hope the money from Washington will primarily service as an amplifier—not only focus on new development.

For example: In a Yahoo Finance Live interview this week, Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ) noted “we're already a hub for semiconductor manufacturing in the United States, this is just going to expand dramatically because of this legislation.”

Intel (INTC) already has a strong presence in Kelly's state with 12,000 employees and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) recently announced plans there as well. For Kelly, a key point of the money is to help develop other companies around Intel and TSMC to help supply the giant fabrication plants to come with equipment, raw materials, and innovation in the years ahead.

It's a similar situation about 2,500 miles away in upstate New York. IBM (IBM) and Micron (MU) are two of the big companies there. There has been years of semiconductor development in the region, which is also seen as a frontrunner for government money.

But again, an official there is quick to point out that this area is far from starting from scratch with government money likely to boost what is already there. “Today, I'm talking with you from Albany NanoTech,” said Mukesh Khare, an IBM vice president, in an interview this week. Khare was also recently named to an Industrial Advisory Committee that is advising the Commerce department on the deployment of the law.

The Albany Nanotech Complex is a public private partnership that has been growing for decades and was completed in 2015 as a host for a range of companies focused on semiconductor research at the SUNY Polytechnic Institute.

Albany’s existing cluster makes good business sense, said Khare, and currently “serves the needs of companies who are here but expanding — with investment from places like CHIPS Act, the state, as well as private companies — will really have a multiplication effect.”

The research facilties in New York could be paired with burgeoning manufacturing efforts. IBM recently announced a $20 billion manufacturing plan in nearby Poughkeepsie, N.Y. During an October visit, President Biden took credit for the expansion saying the CHIPs and Science act is “a law that’s going to build the future and a proud, proud legacy not only for IBM, but for the country.”

In addition, Micron recently announced plans to invest up to $100 billion over the coming decades in Syracuse N.Y.

But Biden officials have repeatedly promised that no company or region is a shoo-in for the money. “The way that we've structured this and what we've been conveying to potential applicants throughout this process is that their expectation shouldn't be that we're giving a nod to any one area just simply because it already has a fab,” Deputy Secretary Graves said.

Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo added “I expect there will be many disappointed companies" and that her primary lens here "is the achievement of our national security goals.”

Aiming for ‘a win-win situation’

The clusters to come will need to strike a balance between the financial imperatives of the semi-conductor sector and the Biden administration's larger policy goals.

In addition to economic development, the Commerce department has stressed that as a condition of applying for the money, companies will have to provide detailed financial information, not engage in stock buybacks with the money they get—and provide detailed workforce development plans down to the level of the childcare facilities they will provide.

In a recent Yahoo Finance Live interview, Secretary Raimondo defended the restrictions and said that her goal is not to impose overly burdensome requirements. “We want to work in partnership with these companies."

Advocates of the multi-pronged goals said that the incentives can be aligned so that it’s beneficial to both the private and public sectors. He said the application process for the money is designed to prod companies to “express to us their vision for how we drive economic development, how we drive competitiveness, not just at a local level, not just at a state level, but at a regional level.”The funds come from about $53 billion put aside in the CHIPs and Science Act. The administration goal: achieving both a revitalization of the U.S. semiconductor industry— as well as broader political and economic goals that officials say will produce hundreds of thousands of jobs in the U.S.One model? “I look to our experience in rebuilding and bringing back from the edge of complete collapse the city of Detroit” Graves said, referencing his time during the Obama administration as the leader of the federal government’s efforts after the city filed for Chapter 9 bankruptcy in 2013. He also mention a government funded network of manufacturing innovation institutes called Manufacturing USA.But the question that remains is whether it’s possible to achieve these goals all at once. The law also includes an investment tax credit of up to 25% towards a manufacturer’s capital expenditures.‘We're already a hub’Another point made by those who have a stake: these hubs already exist. Thus, they hope the money from Washington will primarily service as an amplifier—not only focus on new development. For example: In a Yahoo Finance Live interview this week, Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ) noted “we're already a hub for semiconductor manufacturing in the United States, this is just going to expand dramatically because of this legislation.”Intel (INTC) already has a strong presence in Kelly's state with 12,000 employees and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) recently announced plans there as well. Khare was also recently named to an Industrial Advisory Committee that is advising the Commerce department on the deployment of the law.The Albany Nanotech Complex is a public private partnership that has been growing for decades and was completed in 2015 as a host for a range of companies focused on semiconductor research at the SUNY Polytechnic Institute.Albany’s existing cluster makes good business sense, said Khare, and currently “serves the needs of companies who are here but expanding — with investment from places like CHIPS Act, the state, as well as private companies — will really have a multiplication effect.”The research facilties in New York could be paired with burgeoning manufacturing efforts. IBM recently announced a $20 billion manufacturing plan in nearby Poughkeepsie, N.Y. During an October visit, President Biden took credit for the expansion saying the CHIPs and Science act is “a law that’s going to build the future and a proud, proud legacy not only for IBM, but for the country.”In addition, Micron recently announced plans to invest up to $100 billion over the coming decades in Syracuse N.Y.But Biden officials have repeatedly promised that no company or region is a shoo-in for the money. “The way that we've structured this and what we've been conveying to potential applicants throughout this process is that their expectation shouldn't be that we're giving a nod to any one area just simply because it already has a fab,” Deputy Secretary Graves said.Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo added “I expect there will be many disappointed companies\" and that her primary lens here \"is the achievement of our national security goals.”Aiming for ‘a win-win situation’The clusters to come will need to strike a balance between the financial imperatives of the semi-conductor sector and the Biden administration's larger policy goals. “We want to work in partnership with these companies.\"Advocates of the multi-pronged goals said that the incentives can be aligned so that it’s beneficial to both the private and public sectors. Speaking of the childcare provisions this week, Sen. Kelly argued “This is a win-win situation, it helps families in Arizona and in other states that are going to have these companies there, but at the same time it helps the employer.”As for the timeline ahead, a Commerce official said the first awards will likely be for big fabrication plants - i.e. the anchors of the clusters to come. Deputy Secretary Graves said “we're hopeful that we'll be able to make our first awards by the end of the year, but it's going to depend on whether we get these strong, strategic-thinking applications.”IBM’s Khare added his praise of the government’s rollout so far and notes that, of course, \"we all want it to be much faster than where we are but, that said, it's a process and it needs to be fair and transparent and accountable so we are here to help.”","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":588,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9940290944,"gmtCreate":1677913930689,"gmtModify":1677913934196,"author":{"id":"4088315707087830","authorId":"4088315707087830","name":"ErlinEL","avatar":"https://static.itradeup.com/news/f95efbd93bdd27fb6297cfab25adfdc4","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4088315707087830","authorIdStr":"4088315707087830"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Wow... Once Wall Street returns, there will be a handful of notable earnings releases and December jobs data to look forward to. \n
\n
\n Earnings will be clustered on Thursday: Conagra Brands, Constellation Brands, Lamb Weston Holdings, and Walgreens Boots Alliance all report. Fourth-quarter earnings season kicks off with results from several big banks on Jan. 13. \n
\n
\n The economic-data highlight of the week will be jobs Friday. The Bureau of Labor Statistics is expected to report a gain of 217,500 nonfarm payrolls in December, following an increase of 263,000 in November. The unemployment rate is forecast to hold steady at a historically low 3.7%. \n
\n
\n Economists will also be watching the BLS' Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey on Tuesday. The consensus estimate calls for 10 million job openings on the last business day of November, which would be 334,000 fewer than in October. \n
\n
\n A looser job market is a key for the Federal Reserve. Economists will look to glean insights from the minutes from the Federal Open Market Committee's mid-December monetary-policy meeting, which will be released on Tuesday. \n
\n
\n Also on Tuesday, the Institute for Supply Management will report its Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index for December, followed by the Services equivalent on Friday. \n
\n
\n Monday \n
\n
\n Markets around the globe, including in the U.S., Canada, China, Japan, and the United Kingdom, are closed in observance of New Year's Day. \n
\n
\n Tuesday 1/3 \n
\n
\n The Census Bureau reports construction spending statistics for November. The consensus estimate is for total construction spending to decline 0.4%, month over month, to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $1.79 trillion. Despite the slowdown in the housing market, construction spending remains near its record peak of $1.82 trillion, hit last July. \n
\n
\n Wednesday 1/4 \n
\n
\n The Federal Open Market Committee releases the minutes from its mid-December monetary-policy meeting. The FOMC raised the federal funds rates at its last seven meetings in 2022, for a total of 4.25 percentage points, the most since 1980. \n
\n
\n The Bureau of Labor Statistics releases the Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey. Economists forecast 10 million job openings on the last business day of November, 334,000 fewer than in October. There are currently 1.7 job openings for every person seeking employment, something that Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell has stressed needs to come into better balance. \n
\n
\n The Institute for Supply Management releases its Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index for December. Expectations are for a 48 reading, one point lower than in November. The index fell below 50 in November for the first time since May of 2020, indicating that the U.S. manufacturing sector is contracting. \n
\n
\n Thursday 1/5 \n
\n
\n ADP releases its National Employment Report for December. The economy is expected to add 145,000 private-sector jobs, after a 127,000 gain in November. Job growth has slowed from first-half 2022's rapid pace. \n
\n
\n Conagra Brands, Constellation Brands, Lamb Weston Holdings, and Walgreens Boots Alliance report quarterly results. \n
\n
\n Costco Wholesale reports December revenue data. On Nov. 30, the discount warehouse retailer reported slower-than-expected same-stores sales growth for the month, leading to a 6.6% decline in the stock on the following day. \n
\n
\n Friday 1/6 \n
\n
\n The BLS releases the jobs report for December. The consensus estimate is for an increase of 217,500 nonfarm payrolls, following a gain of 263,000 in November. The unemployment rate is seen remaining unchanged at a historically low 3.7%.
Economists forecast 10 million job openings on the last business day of November, 334,000 fewer than in October.
Fixing Twitter m","content":"

Tesla stock is down again, and investors once more are pointing fingers at Twitter. Fixing Twitter might not be enough to fix shares of the electric-vehicle giant, though. Technical stock market analysts see other factors at play.

Tesla stock (ticker: TSLA) opened higher Tuesday, along with the rest of the market following slower-than-expected U.S. inflation data for November. The stock traded at $175.05 early in the day, up more than 4%.

Investors didn’t have much time to celebrate as gains didn’t hold, and Tesla stock hit a new 52-week low on Tuesday at $158.03. They ended the data at $160.95, down 4.1%. while The S&P 500 rose 0.7%, and theDow Jones Industrial Average advanced 0.3%.

Tesla stock is now down about 11% for the week, and down almost 30% since CEO Elon Musk completed his acquisition of Twitter, underperforming theNasdaq Composite Index by roughly 33% over that span.

Investors hope that Musk stops tweeting so much and that things calm down at his social media platform. That’s the catalyst Tesla bulls want.

Musk “will come to his senses that attacking his woke left customer base is hurting the {Tesla] brand and he will tone down his political views,” wroteFuture Fund Active ETF (FFND) co-founder, and Tesla shareholder, Gary Black on Twitter Tuesday. He also expects Musk to name a new Twitter CEO soon.

Those actions might not give the EV giant’s shares the boost he hopes for. Tesla’s stock chart continues to look weak. Technical traders and analysts look at chart patterns, moving averages, and resistance levels as a shortcut to understanding how investors feel about a stock fundamentally, and where a stock might be headed in the short run.

Since early November, Tesla’s stock chart looks like it’s finishing up a head-and-shoulders pattern which, looks like a person shrugging. A stock hits a high and drops, forming the first shoulder. A new high is reached, followed by another decline, to create the head. A final rise takes the stock back up to the height of the first shoulder, only for another decline to bring the price below the “neckline” of the head.

Breaking $180 about a month ago was a signal to technical traders that more pain was coming for Tesla stock investors. The shares had some support around $166, but they’re now below that level. “The support zone between $120 and $155 from late 2020 [levels] looks next,” says CappThesis founder and technical stock market analyst Frank Cappelleri.

Katie Stockton, who founded of the technical-analysis shop Fairlead Strategies, believes that if Tesla stock closes below $166 for a couple of weeks, then $107 is in play.

John Roque of 22V Research has been the most bearish of those three, maintaining that the bottom for Tesla stock is closer to $100. “The trend overwhelms his tweeting, either way,” says Roque.

None of the three have fundamentally based target prices for Tesla stock. They are only trying to tell investors who look at earnings and cash flow what the chart says about investor sentiment. It isn’t what bullish investors want to hear.

If Tesla stock closes at current levels, its market capitalization will be less than $500 billion for the first time since Nov. 23, 2020, according to Dow Jones Market Data.

","source":"lsy1610680873436","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Tesla Stock Fell Again. The stock traded at $175.05 early in the day, up more than 4%.Investors didn’t have much time to celebrate as gains didn’t hold, and Tesla stock hit a new 52-week low on Tuesday at $158.03. They ended the data at $160.95, down 4.1%. while The S&P 500 rose 0.7%, and theDow Jones Industrial Average advanced 0.3%.Tesla stock is now down about 11% for the week, and down almost 30% since CEO Elon Musk completed his acquisition of Twitter, underperforming theNasdaq Composite Index by roughly 33% over that span.Investors hope that Musk stops tweeting so much and that things calm down at his social media platform. That’s the catalyst Tesla bulls want.Musk “will come to his senses that attacking his woke left customer base is hurting the {Tesla] brand and he will tone down his political views,” wroteFuture Fund Active ETF (FFND) co-founder, and Tesla shareholder, Gary Black on Twitter Tuesday. He also expects Musk to name a new Twitter CEO soon. Those actions might not give the EV giant’s shares the boost he hopes for. Tesla’s stock chart continues to look weak. Technical traders and analysts look at chart patterns, moving averages, and resistance levels as a shortcut to understanding how investors feel about a stock fundamentally, and where a stock might be headed in the short run.Since early November, Tesla’s stock chart looks like it’s finishing up a head-and-shoulders pattern which, looks like a person shrugging. A stock hits a high and drops, forming the first shoulder. A new high is reached, followed by another decline, to create the head. A final rise takes the stock back up to the height of the first shoulder, only for another decline to bring the price below the “neckline” of the head.Breaking $180 about a month ago was a signal to technical traders that more pain was coming for Tesla stock investors. The shares had some support around $166, but they’re now below that level. “The support zone between $120 and $155 from late 2020 [levels] looks next,” says CappThesis founder and technical stock market analyst Frank Cappelleri.Katie Stockton, who founded of the technical-analysis shop Fairlead Strategies, believes that if Tesla stock closes below $166 for a couple of weeks, then $107 is in play.John Roque of 22V Research has been the most bearish of those three, maintaining that the bottom for Tesla stock is closer to $100. “The trend overwhelms his tweeting, either way,” says Roque.None of the three have fundamentally based target prices for Tesla stock. They are only trying to tell investors who look at earnings and cash flow what the chart says about investor sentiment. It isn’t what bullish investors want to hear.If Tesla stock closes at current levels, its market capitalization will be less than $500 billion for the first time since Nov. 23, 2020, according to Dow Jones Market Data.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":897,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9923445826,"gmtCreate":1670897971266,"gmtModify":1676538456417,"author":{"id":"4088315707087830","authorId":"4088315707087830","name":"ErlinEL","avatar":"https://static.itradeup.com/news/f95efbd93bdd27fb6297cfab25adfdc4","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4088315707087830","authorIdStr":"4088315707087830"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"<a The two are similar regarding the beverages they sell worldwide. The one significant difference is that PepsiCo has a robust snack segment.

In 2021, PepsiCo's stock returned 17%, handily outperforming Coca-Cola's return of 8%. That being said, I'm going to go out on a limb and predict that Coca-Cola will turn the tables in 2022.

Stay-at-home trends were good for PepsiCo's business

The effects of the pandemic were helpful to PepsiCo's business and harmful to Coca-Cola. PepsiCo's robust snack division has thrived since the pandemic's onset. Folks are spending more time working, learning, and entertaining at home, and so it is creating more opportunities to have a snack.

What's more, PepsiCo's snack division runs a higher operating profit margin than its beverage segment. In its 36 weeks ended Sept. 4, PepsiCo's snack segment (Frito-Lay) reported revenue of $13.4 billion and operating income of $4 billion. In contrast, its beverage segment reported revenue of $17.6 billion and operating income of $1.9 billion. These figures are for North America alone.

Meanwhile, the effects of the pandemic have been harmful to Coca-Cola. The company has spent decades securing exclusive relationships with venue operators worldwide, including movie theaters, ballparks, theme parks, and restaurants, along with college campuses. So when governments mandated the closures of nonessential businesses, sales fell for Coca-Cola and its partners. In 2020, Coke's sales were down by 11.4%.

Why will 2022 be any different for Coca-Cola?

Thankfully, several effective vaccines and treatments against COVID-19 have been developed and administered worldwide. That has given governments the confidence to reopen economies and keep them open despite several surges of COVID infection. Economic reopening started gaining momentum in the second quarter of 2021, first in regions with better access to vaccines and moving on to the rest of the world as the year progressed.

Fans can again watch their favorite teams live and in person. People can go to see musicians in concert, and restaurants are welcoming guests to dine on premises, both inside and outside. Although this return to routine has been progressing throughout 2021, away-from-home sales of beverages are still below pre-pandemic levels, according to Coca-Cola CEO James Quincey.

However, if economic reopening continues to gain momentum in 2022, away-from-home beverage sales will likely surpass 2019 levels. And remember that beverages cost much more when you buy them for consumption outside of your home. A Coke at a movie theater can hit your wallet for $6, while the same quantity can be had for less than $2 at a grocery store.

Simultaneously, as people are spending more time away from home, returning to offices -- and with students going back to school on campus -- there will be fewer opportunities to eat at home, thereby slowing sales for PepsiCo's lucrative snack segment.

The combination of increasing beverage sales for Coca-Cola and decreasing sales in PepsiCo's snack segment could be the catalyst that causes Coca-Cola's stock to outperform PepsiCo in 2022.

","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
2022 Market Prediction: Coca-Cola Outperforms PepsiCo
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n2022 Market Prediction: Coca-Cola Outperforms PepsiCo\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2022-01-13 11:12 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
International consumer packaged-goods giants Coca-Cola (NYSE:KO) and PepsiCo (NASDAQ:PEP) have competed for decades.

Speaking of the childcare provisions this week, Sen. Kelly argued “This is a win-win situation, it helps families in Arizona and in other states that are going to have these companies there, but at the same time it helps the employer.”

As for the timeline ahead, a Commerce official said the first awards will likely be for big fabrication plants - i.e. the anchors of the clusters to come. Deputy Secretary Graves said “we're hopeful that we'll be able to make our first awards by the end of the year, but it's going to depend on whether we get these strong, strategic-thinking applications.”

IBM’s Khare added his praise of the government’s rollout so far and notes that, of course, "we all want it to be much faster than where we are but, that said, it's a process and it needs to be fair and transparent and accountable so we are here to help.”

","source":"yahoofinance_sg","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Biden Has Big Plans for Semiconductor Clusters — Will Companies Play Along?
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nBiden Has Big Plans for Semiconductor Clusters — Will Companies Play Along?\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2023-03-04 09:17 GMT+8 Yahoo Finance\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
The Biden administration recently has laid out ambitious plans to use government money to spur at least two, new large-scale clusters of semiconductor manufacturing and research in the years ahead. In ...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{"INTC":"英特尔","TSM":"台积电","IBM":"IBM","MU":"美光科技"},"source_url":"https://finance.yahoo.com/news/biden-has-big-plans-for-semiconductor-clusters--will-companies-play-along-200042981.html","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/e9f99090a1c2ed51c021029395664489","article_id":"2316901789","content_text":"The Biden administration recently has laid out ambitious plans to use government money to spur at least two, new large-scale clusters of semiconductor manufacturing and research in the years ahead. In an interview this week, Deputy Secretary of Commerce Don Graves outlined his department’s ambition for these projects. Another would be to solicit offers from other potential bidders. In response, Musk has threatened to launch a tender offer that he could use to register Twitter shareholder support for his bid.

A concern that Twitter's board is weighing is that unless it seeks to negotiate a deal with Musk, many shareholders could back him in a tender offer, the sources said. While the poison pill would prevent Twitter shareholders from tendering their shares, the company is worried that its negotiating hand would weaken considerably if it was shown to be going against the will of many of its investors, the sources added.

Musk, the chief executive of electric car maker Tesla Inc, has been meeting with Twitter shareholders since he unveiled his offer on April 14, seeking support for his bid.
