economy on a sounder footing?

When Dennis Porter co-founded the nonprofit Satoshi Action Fund in 2022 and started advocating for a national bitcoin reserve, the idea that the United States might soon be stockpiling bitcoin appeared remote. The cryptocurrency exchange FTX was headed for bankruptcy and the Biden administration seemed outright hostile to digital assets.

But Porter, who had previously worked in politics on the local and state level in Oregon, kept pushing the idea. He immersed himself in the online social networks that connect crypto enthusiasts, where he had also met Mandy Gunasekara - the co-founder of his nonprofit who served as chief of staff at the Environmental Protection Agency in the first Trump administration. They rounded out their team by hiring Eric Peterson, a veteran policy analyst for conservative groups like Americans for Prosperity, to serve as Satoshi Action Fund's policy director.

"Just as an individual should own bitcoin to protect their purchasing power in the future, we also believe that the states and federal government should do that as well," said Porter, who has helped popularize the idea as much as anyone.

Porter is now seeing the culmination of years of hard work and his single-minded dedication to the idea that bitcoin (BTCUSD) can serve as a national strategic asset.

Bitcoin prices have pulled back this week after a weekslong rally driven by hopes that a Trump administration will enact crypto-friendly policies. Nothing has bitcoin traders more bullish than speculation that the U.S. Treasury might make outright purchases in an effort to create a "strategic bitcoin reserve."

The notion of a federal bitcoin reserve would have seemed absurd just months ago, particularly to crypto purists who view the digital currency as a bulwark against government control. Yet this once-fringe idea has gained serious political momentum, with Trump among its prominent supporters, leading some analysts to view potential government purchases as a watershed moment for cryptocurrency markets.

A presidential endorsement

Trump first endorsed the idea of a bitcoin reserve during a speech at a bitcoin conference in Nashville, Tenn., in July. When Trump showed up on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange earlier this month, CNBC's Jim Cramer asked him if he wanted to create a strategic cryptocurrency reserve that mirrored the federal government's stockpiling of petroleum. "I think so," Trump responded. "We are going to do something great with crypto."

Porter said that Trump's support has been a catalyst for other politicians to adopt the idea, but that the most important development was the November election results, where politicians who appeared pro-crypto had an advantage over digital-asset skeptics.

"The election was a clear signal that politicians need to start paying attention to bitcoin," he said. "A lot of people care about this, and they're going to fight for it, and win. That's what led to this really big outpouring of interest in the strategic bitcoin reserve."

Porter granted that the idea may come under criticism for appearing to line the pockets of current bitcoin holders, and that a strategic bitcoin reserve would be extremely bullish for the asset.

But he argued this is no different than many government programs.

"The government owns gold and that helps out gold holders, and the government buys oil, helping out oil companies," he said.

The Trump transition team didn't respond to requests for comment.

The movement catches fire

The idea that the government should stockpile bitcoin even has some bipartisan support.

Democratic Rep. Ro Khanna of California believes the U.S. would benefit from a bitcoin reserve, and has advocated for the U.S. holding on to bitcoin it has seized from criminals, rather than the typical practice of selling them.

"Bitcoin that has been seized by the U.S. government should not be sold for a specified duration, and made part of our reserves," Khanna told MarketWatch.

Sen. Cynthia Lummis, a Wyoming Republican, has been Capitol Hill's most aggressive proponent of a bitcoin strategic reserve. She introduced a bill over the summer that would have the U.S. purchase 1 million bitcoin over five years.

"For years, my generation has spent federal funds with reckless abandon, amassing an insurmountable $36 trillion in national debt with no clear end in sight," Lummis said in a statement to MarketWatch.

"We owe it to future generations to take bold and substantive action to address our debt crisis, and creating a strategic bitcoin reserve gives us the best chance at paying down nearly half of our national debt in the next 20 years with existing resources, with the added bonus of securing America's position as the world leader in financial innovation for the 21st century."

Porter of the Satoshi Action Fund has also had success bringing the idea to the state level. Just last week the chairman of the Texas House financial committee introduced a bill establishing a bitcoin reserve for his state, and similar legislation has been introduced in Pennsylvania and Ohio.

Out with the gold, in with the new

Lummis's idea for financing the bitcoin purchases relies in part on the massive stockpile of gold (GC00) the U.S. owns as a legacy from the days when the U.S. dollar was backed by the precious metal, and when dollar holders could exchange their currency for gold at a fixed price.

Dollars haven't been convertible for gold since the early 1970s, but the Treasury and Federal Reserve still own roughly 8,100 metric tons of gold.

The government values that gold at $42 per ounce, well below the current market price of $2,650.

Lummis wants the Treasury to revalue that gold at the current market price, and use the paper profit to finance bitcoin purchases without having to raise taxes or issue new Treasury debt.

Critics say, however, that this operation wouldn't be a free lunch, and would require Federal Reserve banks to use some combination of money printing and asset sales to pay the Treasury the difference between the current price of their gold certificates and their new valuation.

Monetary economist George Selgin argued in a recent newsletter that this operation would amount to "backdoor borrowing," by the government.

In order to avoid new debt and to "skip past the ordinary appropriations process, and to otherwise pull the wool over Americans' eyes, that the [Lummis bill] relies on so much gold-plated hocus pocus," Selgin wrote.

"What better way to gain the public's support for a plan that may only serve to pump bitcoin holders' bags than by making it look like it won't cost a thing?"

Bitcoin purists appalled

Bitcoin was conceived as a technology that would free its users of interference and surveillance by powerful institutions like the government and banks.

Some bitcoin purists devoted to that initial vision are not too happy with calls for the government to own a large portion of the total supply.

Mark Goodwin, editor and chief of Bitcoin Magazine, said on X that he "will never be able to properly express how deeply sad this whole stunt makes me."

He argued that the reserve would ultimately hinder bitcoin's development as a currency and reinforce the power of the American-led global financial system.

Catherine Austin Fitts, a former investment banker and assistant secretary for the Department of Housing and Urban Development, argued in a November blog post that the strategic bitcoin reserve idea has been pushed by so-called bitcoin billionaires to create a wealthy buyer for their holdings.

"Bitcoin started as a digital payment system that had the potential to grow into a powerful decentralized network and community that offered significant utility and could indeed revolutionize money," she wrote.

Fitts lamented that bitcoin has instead turned into a "pump-and-dump financial product," with the federal government now targeted as the ultimate mark.

Porter remains unfazed. "These criticisms are water off my back," he said, adding that he has long received flak from purists who argued that bitcoiners shouldn't engage in politics at all, an argument he believes has been discredited.

"I've been proven right quite a number of times on the way we should do these things," he said. "At the end of the day bitcoin is too important to give up the fight."

","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Will a Trump-Backed U.S. Bitcoin Reserve Power Crypto's Next Rally?
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nWill a Trump-Backed U.S. Bitcoin Reserve Power Crypto's Next Rally?\n
\n\n
\n\n\n<div class=\"head\" \">\n\n\n

\n\n
\n
Dow Jones
\n
2024-12-22 11:13
\n
\n\n
\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n

Would the plan enrich bitcoin holders, or put the U.S. economy on a sounder footing?

They rounded out their team by hiring Eric Peterson, a veteran policy analyst for conservative groups like Americans for Prosperity, to serve as Satoshi Action Fund's policy director.\"Just as an individual should own bitcoin to protect their purchasing power in the future, we also believe that the states and federal government should do that as well,\" said Porter, who has helped popularize the idea as much as anyone.Porter is now seeing the culmination of years of hard work and his single-minded dedication to the idea that bitcoin (BTCUSD) can serve as a national strategic asset.Bitcoin prices have pulled back this week after a weekslong rally driven by hopes that a Trump administration will enact crypto-friendly policies. Nothing has bitcoin traders more bullish than speculation that the U.S. Treasury might make outright purchases in an effort to create a \"strategic bitcoin reserve.\"The notion of a federal bitcoin reserve would have seemed absurd just months ago, particularly to crypto purists who view the digital currency as a bulwark against government control. Yet this once-fringe idea has gained serious political momentum, with Trump among its prominent supporters, leading some analysts to view potential government purchases as a watershed moment for cryptocurrency markets.A presidential endorsementTrump first endorsed the idea of a bitcoin reserve during a speech at a bitcoin conference in Nashville, Tenn., in July. When Trump showed up on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange earlier this month, CNBC's Jim Cramer asked him if he wanted to create a strategic cryptocurrency reserve that mirrored the federal government's stockpiling of petroleum. \"I think so,\" Trump responded. \"We are going to do something great with crypto.\"Porter said that Trump's support has been a catalyst for other politicians to adopt the idea, but that the most important development was the November election results, where politicians who appeared pro-crypto had an advantage over digital-asset skeptics.\"The election was a clear signal that politicians need to start paying attention to bitcoin,\" he said. \"A lot of people care about this, and they're going to fight for it, and win. That's what led to this really big outpouring of interest in the strategic bitcoin reserve.\"Porter granted that the idea may come under criticism for appearing to line the pockets of current bitcoin holders, and that a strategic bitcoin reserve would be extremely bullish for the asset. But he argued this is no different than many government programs.\"The government owns gold and that helps out gold holders, and the government buys oil, helping out oil companies,\" he said. The Trump transition team didn't respond to requests for comment. The movement catches fireThe idea that the government should stockpile bitcoin even has some bipartisan support.Democratic Rep. Ro Khanna of California believes the U.S. would benefit from a bitcoin reserve, and has advocated for the U.S. holding on to bitcoin it has seized from criminals, rather than the typical practice of selling them.\"Bitcoin that has been seized by the U.S. government should not be sold for a specified duration, and made part of our reserves,\" Khanna told MarketWatch.Sen. Cynthia Lummis, a Wyoming Republican, has been Capitol Hill's most aggressive proponent of a bitcoin strategic reserve. She introduced a bill over the summer that would have the U.S. purchase 1 million bitcoin over five years.\"For years, my generation has spent federal funds with reckless abandon, amassing an insurmountable $36 trillion in national debt with no clear end in sight,\" Lummis said in a statement to MarketWatch.\"We owe it to future generations to take bold and substantive action to address our debt crisis, and creating a strategic bitcoin reserve gives us the best chance at paying down nearly half of our national debt in the next 20 years with existing resources, with the added bonus of securing America's position as the world leader in financial innovation for the 21st century.\"Porter of the Satoshi Action Fund has also had success bringing the idea to the state level. dollar was backed by the precious metal, and when dollar holders could exchange their currency for gold at a fixed price.Dollars haven't been convertible for gold since the early 1970s, but the Treasury and Federal Reserve still own roughly 8,100 metric tons of gold. The government values that gold at $42 per ounce, well below the current market price of $2,650.Lummis wants the Treasury to revalue that gold at the current market price, and use the paper profit to finance bitcoin purchases without having to raise taxes or issue new Treasury debt.Critics say, however, that this operation wouldn't be a free lunch, and would require Federal Reserve banks to use some combination of money printing and asset sales to pay the Treasury the difference between the current price of their gold certificates and their new valuation.Monetary economist George Selgin argued in a recent newsletter that this operation would amount to \"backdoor borrowing,\" by the government. In order to avoid new debt and to \"skip past the ordinary appropriations process, and to otherwise pull the wool over Americans' eyes, that the [Lummis bill] relies on so much gold-plated hocus pocus,\" Selgin wrote.\"What better way to gain the public's support for a plan that may only serve to pump bitcoin holders' bags than by making it look like it won't cost a thing?\"Bitcoin purists appalledBitcoin was conceived as a technology that would free its users of interference and surveillance by powerful institutions like the government and banks. Some bitcoin purists devoted to that initial vision are not too happy with calls for the government to own a large portion of the total supply.Mark Goodwin, editor and chief of Bitcoin Magazine, said on X that he \"will never be able to properly express how deeply sad this whole stunt makes me.\"He argued that the reserve would ultimately hinder bitcoin's development as a currency and reinforce the power of the American-led global financial Over?","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2321646223","media":"The Smart Investor","summary":"The glove maker saw a sharp share price recovery last week. Is its business due for a turnaround?","content":"

[
\n
\n
\n
\nShare\n
\n\nFacebook\n\nTwitter\n\nLinkedIn\n\nEmail\n\nWhatsApp\n
\n
\n
\n
\n

\n
The pandemic may seem like a distant memory now, but it had the effect of boosting the fortunes of several sectors such as technology, rubber gloves, and personal protective equipment.
\n
As countries around the world lifted movement restrictions and reopened their borders, demand also correspondingly plunged as people welcome some semblance of pre-pandemic normalcy.
\n
Top Glove Corporation Berhad (SGX: BVA) is one such business.
\n
The world’s largest glove manufacturer, which has a production capacity of 100 billion pieces per annum, saw its share price plunge from a high of S$3.10 in August 2020 to S$0.18 in September last year.
\n
However, in the last week, the share price of Top Glove has jumped 21.4% from S$0.21 to close at S$0.255.
\n
Could the glove maker be poised for a turnaround and see its share price head higher?
\n
Weak earnings to persist in the near term
\n
Last week, Top Glove released its fiscal 2023’s second quarter (2Q FY2023) earnings for the period ending 28 February 2023.
\n
The glove maker saw its revenue plunge by 58.2% year on year from RM 1.48 billion to RM 618 million.
\n
Operating expenses, however, fell by just 43.1% year on year to RM 785.8 million.
\n
Top Glove ended up incurring an operating loss of RM 142.8 million and a net loss of RM 164.7 million.
\n
On a quarter on quarter (qoq) basis, its numbers remained relatively flat.
\n
Revenue dipped by 2% qoq from RM 633 million in 1Q FY2023 while net loss was 2% lower qoq.
\n
The good news is that sales volume grew 6% qoq as customers showed signs of replenishing their inventories.
\n
Top Glove continued to generate negative free cash flow for the first half of fiscal 2023 (1H FY2023).
\n
The group reported a free cash outflow of RM 272.2 million for 1H FY2023, a sharp improvement over the free cash outflow of RM 571.3 million in the previous corresponding period.
\n
The glove maker ended the period with RM 703.9 million of cash and investment securities along with RM 432.3 million of debt.
\n
The average selling price continues to decline
\n
Despite the rise in sales volume, the average selling price (ASP) continues to be under pressure.
\n
The overall ASP slid by 4% qoq due to a combination of oversupply and intense competition.
\n
Drilling into the details, nitrile gloves saw their ASP fall 1% qoq while natural rubber gloves suffered a 6% qoq drop in ASP.

\n
Although customers are seeing their glove stockpiles diminishing, they are in no rush to place large orders, resulting in lower utilisation rates among manufacturers.
\n
With more players in the market, as the pandemic saw the influx of new glove manufacturers, ASP will continue to be under pressure.
\n
There is some good news though – Top Glove has raised its ASP effective February and the positive effect should flow through into 3Q FY2023.
\n
With nitrile and natural rubber gloves making up 70% of the group’s product mix in 2Q FY2023, investors should hopefully see some positive impact on sales and margins in the next quarter.
\n
A mixed picture for production costs
\n
Top Glove is enjoying some respite from higher fuel prices caused by inflation.
\n
Fuel costs take up 18% of its 2Q FY2023 production cost breakdown and natural gas tariffs are expected to decline by 15% come April 2023.
\n
However, electricity tariffs will surge by 42% effective from the beginning of this year, though this component makes up just 4% of Top Glove’s production cost.
\n
Raw material prices take up a significant 36% of production costs and are not easing anytime soon.
\n
Nitrile prices are expected to increase by 8% month on month for March to around US$0.95 per kg, though this level is still way below the US$2.42 per kg logged at the end of 2020.
\n
Latex prices are also rising steadily and will only stabilise after the wintering season ends in May.
\n
All in, Top Glove’s production costs are expected to remain high, and the only way the group can earn a decent margin is if it can further raise its ASPs in the coming months.
\n
Get Smart: Too early to tell
\n
It is too early to tell if the glovemaker’s troubles are over.
\n
The oversupply situation in the glove sector looks set to persist until the end of 2023 and competition remains stiff.
\n
Late last year, Top Glove had already deferred all its capital expenditure for new capacity and will continue to focus on cost rationalisation initiatives.
\n
ASP may be close to bottoming, but the jury is out as to whether the glove maker can post better financial numbers for the rest of this year.
\n
If you’re looking to invest in 2023, our latest FREE report can guide you. pandemic may seem like a distant memory now, but it had the effect of boosting the fortunes of several sectors such as technology, rubber gloves, and personal protective equipment.\nAs countries around the world lifted movement restrictions and reopened their borders, demand also correspondingly plunged as people welcome some semblance of pre-pandemic normalcy.\nTop Glove Corporation Berhad (SGX: BVA) is one such business.\nThe world’s largest glove manufacturer, which has a production capacity of 100 billion pieces per annum, saw its share price plunge from a high of S$3.10 in August 2020 to S$0.18 in September last year.\nHowever, in the last week, the share price of Top Glove has jumped 21.4% from S$0.21 to close at S$0.255.\nCould the glove maker be poised for a turnaround and see its share price head higher?\nWeak earnings to persist in the near term\nLast week, Top Glove released its fiscal 2023’s second quarter (2Q FY2023) earnings for the period ending 28 February 2023.\nThe glove maker saw its revenue plunge by 58.2% year on year from RM 1.48 billion to RM 618 million.\nOperating expenses, however, fell by just 43.1% year on year to RM 785.8 million.\nTop Glove ended up incurring an operating loss of RM 142.8 million and a net loss of RM 164.7 million.\nOn a quarter on quarter (qoq) basis, its numbers remained relatively flat.\nRevenue dipped by 2% qoq from RM 633 million in 1Q FY2023 while net loss was 2% lower qoq.\nThe good news is that sales volume grew 6% qoq as customers showed signs of replenishing their inventories.\nTop Glove continued to generate negative free cash flow for the first half of fiscal 2023 (1H FY2023).\nThe group reported a free cash outflow of RM 272.2 million for 1H FY2023, a sharp improvement over the free cash outflow of RM 571.3 million in the previous corresponding period.\nThe glove maker ended the period with RM 703.9 million of cash and investment securities along with RM 432.3 million of debt.\nThe average selling price continues to decline\nDespite the rise in sales volume, the average selling price (ASP) continues to be under pressure.\nThe overall ASP slid by 4% qoq due to a combination of oversupply and intense competition.\nDrilling into the details, nitrile gloves saw their ASP fall 1% qoq while natural rubber gloves suffered a 6% qoq drop in ASP.\nAlthough customers are seeing their glove stockpiles diminishing, they are in no rush to place large orders, resulting in lower utilisation rates among manufacturers.\nWith more players in the market, as the pandemic saw the influx of new glove manufacturers, ASP will continue to be under pressure.\nThere is some good news though – Top Glove has raised its ASP effective February and the positive effect should flow through into 3Q FY2023.\nWith nitrile and natural rubber gloves making up 70% of the group’s product mix in 2Q FY2023, investors should hopefully see some positive impact on sales and margins in the next quarter.\nA mixed picture for production costs\nTop Glove is enjoying some respite from higher fuel prices caused by inflation.\nFuel costs take up 18% of its 2Q FY2023 production cost breakdown and natural gas tariffs are expected to decline by 15% come April 2023.\nHowever, electricity tariffs will surge by 42% effective from the beginning of this year, though this component makes up just 4% of Top Glove’s production cost.\nRaw material prices take up a significant 36% of production costs and are not easing anytime soon.\nNitrile prices are expected to increase by 8% month on month for March to around US$0.95 per kg, though this level is still way below the US$2.42 per kg logged at the end of 2020.\nLatex prices are also rising steadily and will only stabilise after the wintering season ends in May.\nAll in, Top Glove’s production costs are expected to remain high, and the only way the group can earn a decent margin is if it can further raise its ASPs in the coming months.\nGet Smart: Too early to tell\nIt is too early to tell if the glovemaker’s troubles are over.\nThe oversupply situation in the glove sector looks set to persist until the end of 2023 and competition remains stiff.\nLate last year, Top Glove had already deferred all its capital expenditure for new capacity and will continue to focus on cost rationalisation initiatives.\nASP may be close to bottoming, but the jury is out as to whether the glove maker can post better financial numbers for the rest of this year.\nIf you’re looking to invest in 2023, our latest FREE report can guide you. always a great feeling to receive a dividend from one of your investments. The payment of a dividend shows that the company is happy to reward shareholders and also implies that it has the sufficient financial strength to afford the payment. But it’s even better when a stock pays out a special dividend.Investors can treat this additional payment as a bonus that comes on top of their regular dividends.Typically, a company pays a special dividend after it makes a one-off cash gain from an asset sale or from a sale of its equity holdings. In other times, it may be paid out to mark a special occasion such as an anniversary or simply to reward shareholders from its accumulated excess cash. Here are four stocks that recently declared a special dividend that you can consider adding to your buy watchlist.City Developments Limited (SGX: C09)City Developments Limited, or CDL, is a leading real estate developer with a strong portfolio of residential and investment properties across 104 locations in 29 countries and regions. The property giant reported a turnaround for its latest fiscal 2022 first half (1H2022)earnings.Revenue climbed 23.5% year on year to S$1.47 billion while net profit hit S$1.1 billion, a sharp reversal from the S$32.1 million net loss a year ago.The record net profit was due to divestment gains from the sale of Millennium Hilton Seoul as well as a one-off gain from the deconsolidation of CDL Hospitality Trusts(SGX: J85).As a result, CDL declared a special interim dividend of S$0.12.The group has more than 2,000 Singapore residential units in its launch pipeline and is also working on redevelopment initiatives.Elsewhere, it is redeveloping the Fuji Xerox to increase its gross floor area by 25% and also redeveloping Central Mall and Central Square into an integrated mixed-use development.Straits Trading Co Ltd (SGX: S20)Straits Trading, or STC, is a 135-year-old conglomerate with interests in resources, property, and hospitality. The group reported a strong set of earnings for 1H2022, with total revenue rising 23.3% year on year to S$270.1 million mainly due to higher tin mining and smelting revenue. In particular, the real estate segment recorded an exceptional gain of S$658.1 million from the disposal of shares in ARA Asset Management Limited. To reward shareholders, STC has proposed a special dividend in specie of either 180 shares of STC for every 1,000 shares held, or 145 shares of ESR Group Limited(HKSE: 1821).The group expects to continue benefitting from current tin prices and will expand its mining pit eastward to improve throughput volume. However, STC remains cautious about its hospitality segment where its recovery could be threatened by economic uncertainties and rising costs.CapitaLand Investment Limited (SGX: 9CI)CapitaLand Investment Limited, or CLI, had S$125 billion of real estate assets under management and S$86 billion of funds under management as of 30 June 2022.CLI presented a good set of financial numbers for fiscal 2021 (FY2021), with revenue increasing 15.6% year on year and core net profit rising 12.2% year on year to S$497 million.Because of the robust results, the property developer paid out a final dividend of S$0.12 and a special dividend of S$0.03.For 1H2022, CLI continued to report a healthy set of financials.Revenue rose 29.1% year on year to S$1.35 billion while core net profit jumped 31.1% year on year to S$346 million. If the group can maintain this momentum, investors may see an increase in the dividend for FY2022.ComfortDelGro Corporation Limited (SGX: C52)ComfortDelGro Corporation Limited, or CDG, is a land transport giant with a total fleet size of 34,000 buses, taxis and rental vehicles.CDG saw a gradual recovery in its business as economic activity picked up in the majority of the countries that the group operates in, except for China.1H2022 revenue inched up 6.7% year on year to S$1.86 billion.Net profit surged by 30.4% year on year to S$118.7 million. The jump in net profit was because of an exceptional gain of S$30.5 million recognised on the disposal of the Alperton property in London.Because of this one-off gain, CDG declared a special dividend of S$0.0141 in addition to an interim dividend of S$0.0285.Although CDG was recently replaced by Emperador Inc(SGX: EMI) within the Straits Times Index(SGX: ^STI), prospects look The cryptocurrency exchange FTX was headed for bankruptcy and the Biden administration seemed outright hostile to digital assets.

Sen. in recent years. It's emerging as an iconic brand that people aspire to own. Most importantly, Tesla has found a profitable path to deliver long-term growth, which the top automakers are struggling to do these days.

Despite tremendous brand power, Tesla faces mounting pressures in the near term, including softening demand in China, which may force the company to lower selling prices on certain models. These headwinds have sent the stock down 56% from its peak in 2021.

I believe the bear market is the perfect opportunity for those who have been on the fence over Tesla's high valuation to add shares to their portfolio. Here are two signs that Tesla's remarkable run is not over.

1. Cybertruck is coming

Tesla CEO Elon Musk unveiled the company's first truck in 2019 to much fanfare. The company planned to launch its first pickup at an affordable price of less than $40,000. With delays in production and high inflation driving up the cost of parts and labor, it will likely debut a bit pricier than originally projected. Regardless, it seems Tesla will try to price the vehicle to compete with the Ford F-150 -- the top-selling vehicle in the U.S. last year.

The F-150 is Ford's highest-volume vehicle, but Tesla could take some share away from the industry leader. Cybertruck might be the most highly anticipated electric vehicle launch to date, with a reported 3 million already having placed a reservation to order. For context, that is nearly 10 times the total amount of deliveries Tesla made in the third quarter alone, which indicates a major future sales driver.

Americans love their trucks, so it wouldn't be surprising for Cybertruck to become Tesla's best-selling vehicle. During the third-quarter earnings call, Musk said, "We're in the final lap for Cybertruck," with production scheduled to begin by the middle of 2023.

2. Tesla is rapidly growing profits

Tesla not only has a major upcoming growth catalyst in Cybertruck, but investors should also take comfort in the fact that Tesla is a rare electric vehicle maker that is profitable. Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas recently noted that "Tesla is the only name we cover that generates a profit (before incentives) on the sale of EVs."

Through the first three quarters of 2022, Tesla earned a net profit of $8.9 billion on $57 billion of revenue. That is much better than Ford's net loss of $3.3 billion on revenue of $114 billion.

Tesla has a superior record of generating profitable growth compared to leading car manufacturers, which is why the stock has soared. Tesla is currently generating about 10 times the level of profit it produced five years ago, while Ford and General Motors have struggled to generate an adequate profit margin.

Data by YCharts.

As Ford and GM crank up their EV operations to compete, Tesla's profitability gives it a major financial advantage to build a better product and provide superior service to its customers.

Tesla is on pace to increase production by 50% heading into 2023. This is clearly in preparation to meet growing demand, which will only continue to increase with its first truck. Musk has called Cybertruck a "hall of famer, next level" vehicle that is going to be "sick and sick."

These are the reasons I believe now is a great opportunity to invest in Tesla stock. pandemic may seem like a distant memory now, but it had the effect of boosting the fortunes of several sectors such as technology, rubber gloves, and personal protective equipment.

\n
Although pandemic may seem like a distant memory now, but it had the effect of boosting the fortunes of several sectors such as technology, rubber gloves, and personal protective equipment.\nAs countries around the world lifted movement restrictions and reopened their borders, demand also correspondingly plunged as people welcome some semblance of pre-pandemic normalcy.\nTop Glove Corporation Berhad (SGX: BVA) is one such business.\nThe world’s largest glove manufacturer, which has a production capacity of 100 billion pieces per annum, saw its share price plunge from a high of S$3.10 in August 2020 to S$0.18 in September last year.\nHowever, in the last week, the share price of Top Glove has jumped 21.4% from S$0.21 to close at S$0.255.\nCould the glove maker be poised for a turnaround and see its share price head higher?\nWeak earnings to persist in the near term\nLast week, Top Glove released its fiscal 2023’s second quarter (2Q FY2023) earnings for the period ending 28 February 2023.\nThe glove maker saw its revenue plunge by 58.2% year on year from RM 1.48 billion to RM 618 million.\nOperating expenses, however, fell by just 43.1% year on year to RM 785.8 million.\nTop Glove ended up incurring an operating loss of RM 142.8 million and a net loss of RM 164.7 million.\nOn a quarter on quarter (qoq) basis, its numbers remained relatively flat.\nRevenue dipped by 2% qoq from RM 633 million in 1Q FY2023 while net loss was 2% lower qoq.\nThe good news is that sales volume grew 6% qoq as customers showed signs of replenishing their inventories.\nTop Glove continued to generate negative free cash flow for the first half of fiscal 2023 (1H FY2023).\nThe group reported a free cash outflow of RM 272.2 million for 1H FY2023, a sharp improvement over the free cash outflow of RM 571.3 million in the previous corresponding period.\nThe glove maker ended the period with RM 703.9 million of cash and investment securities along with RM 432.3 million of debt.\nThe average selling price continues to decline\nDespite the rise in sales volume, the average selling price (ASP) continues to be under pressure.\nThe overall ASP slid by 4% qoq due to a combination of oversupply and intense competition.\nDrilling into the details, nitrile gloves saw their ASP fall 1% qoq while natural rubber gloves suffered a 6% qoq drop in ASP.\nAlthough customers are seeing their glove stockpiles diminishing, they are in no rush to place large orders, resulting in lower utilisation rates among manufacturers.\nWith more players in the market, as the pandemic saw the influx of new glove manufacturers, ASP will continue to be under pressure.\nThere is some good news though – Top Glove has raised its ASP effective February and the positive effect should flow through into 3Q FY2023.\nWith nitrile and natural rubber gloves making up 70% of the group’s product mix in 2Q FY2023, investors should hopefully see some positive impact on sales and margins in the next quarter.\nA mixed picture for production costs\nTop Glove is enjoying some respite from higher fuel prices caused by inflation.\nFuel costs take up 18% of its 2Q FY2023 production cost breakdown and natural gas tariffs are expected to decline by 15% come April 2023.\nHowever, electricity tariffs will surge by 42% effective from the beginning of this year, though this component makes up just 4% of Top Glove’s production cost.\nRaw material prices take up a significant 36% of production costs and are not easing anytime soon.\nNitrile prices are expected to increase by 8% month on month for March to around US$0.95 per kg, though this level is still way below the US$2.42 per kg logged at the end of 2020.\nLatex prices are also rising steadily and will only stabilise after the wintering season ends in May.\nAll in, Top Glove’s production costs are expected to remain high, and the only way the group can earn a decent margin is if it can further raise its ASPs in the coming months.\nGet Smart: Too early to tell\nIt is too early to tell if the glovemaker’s troubles are over.\nThe oversupply situation in the glove sector looks set to persist until the end of 2023 and competition remains stiff.\nLate last year, Top Glove had already deferred all its capital expenditure for new capacity and will continue to focus on cost rationalisation initiatives.\nASP may be close to bottoming, but the jury is out as to whether the glove maker can post better financial numbers for the rest of this year.\nIf you’re looking to invest in 2023, our latest FREE report can guide you. 29.1% year on year to S$1.35 billion while core net profit jumped 31.1% year on year to S$346 million.

If the group can maintain this momentum, investors may see an increase in the dividend for FY2022.

ComfortDelGro Corporation Limited (SGX: C52)

ComfortDelGro Corporation Limited, or CDG, is a land transport giant with a total fleet size of 34,000 buses, taxis and rental vehicles.

CDG saw a gradual recovery in its business as economic activity picked up in the majority of the countries that the group operates in, except for China.

1H2022 revenue inched up 6.7% year on year to S$1.86 billion.

Net profit surged by 30.4% year on year to S$118.7 million.

The jump in net profit was because of an exceptional gain of S$30.5 million recognised on the disposal of the Alperton property in London.

Because of this one-off gain, CDG declared a special dividend of S$0.0141 in addition to an interim dividend of S$0.0285.

Although CDG was recently replaced by Emperador Inc(SGX: EMI) within the Straits Times Index(SGX: ^STI), prospects look bright for the transport conglomerate.

Taxi revenue is expected to improve
