(BRK.A, BRK.B) recently purchased $4.1 billion worth of shares of $Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited (NYSE:TSM) ("TSMC"), as shown in its Q3 13F filing. While Buffett is not exactly the most tech-savvy investor, and the decision could've been made by his top lieutenants Todd Combs and Ted Weschler, Buffett is very well known as a value investor who knows how to spot companies with favorable long-term prospects, strong financials, and an attractive valuation. Let's go through each of these qualities to understand why TSMC made Berkshire's buy list.

1. Favorable long-term prospects

TSMC is the world's largest contract chip manufacturer and commands over 55% of the foundry market. At the leading edge, TSMC is the undisputed leader (competitive analysis here), with an 85% market share in the 7nm process node and 90% in the 5nm process. The most advanced 3nm process is already in volume production in the current quarter, with revenue contribution expected in 2023 (3Q22 earnings analysis here). Should its closest competitor Samsung (OTCPK:SSNLF) continue to struggle with yield issues at the most leading edge, TSMC could virtually have a monopoly in the 3nm process node, where Apple (AAPL) is expected to be the first major customer.

While the industry is currently going through an inventory correction phase where smartphone and PC customers have been cutting orders, TSMC's technology leadership puts the company in a favorable spot to benefit from the secular trend towards higher silicon content in almost all digital devices, from laptops to server network processors. In 2022, the HPC platform as a percentage of total revenue exceeded the Smartphone platform for the first time in Q1.

Despite Gartner forecasts that the semiconductor industry will contract by 2.5% in 2023, TSMC sees 2023 as a growth year given that HPC is expected to be the major growth driver thanks to applications in AI, 5G, datacenters, smart cars, VR/AR, and connected devices. While the Automotive platform is still early at 5% of TSMC's revenue, this could potentially become a meaningful growth contributor as automakers embrace more semiconductor chips in the transition towards electric vehicles ("EVs"). All told, digital transformation is here to stay post-Covid, and the demand for higher silicon content and faster computing power remains a structural vs. cyclical tailwind for TSMC.

2. Strong financials

TSMC is an extremely well-managed business with a strong margin profile and a solid balance sheet. As an industry-leader in semiconductor manufacturing, TSMC boasts an average gross margin of 50% over the last 5 years and is expected to deliver GM of 55% in 2022. While management's longer-term GM target of 53%+ may face some downward pressure in 2023 due to higher N3 depreciation (2-3% impact) and lower N7 capacity utilization amidst inventory adjustments in the consumer electronics market, anywhere above 50% in the current down cycle is highly respectable.

During the 2008 financial crisis, TSMC was able to maintain a very strong margin profile where GM fell just 1.5 points from 44% in 2007 to 42.5% in 2008 and subsequently recovered to 43.7% in 2009 and 49.4% in 2010. On the bottom line, net margin fell from 33.8% in 2007 to 30% in 2008/09, but saw a strong recovery to 38.5% in 2010. While history does not guarantee future results, it should give investors a sense of how TSMC will manage through the next recession.

Turning to the balance sheet, TSMC is by no means an asset-light business considering hard assets (net property, plant & equipment) make up 55% of total assets. While chip manufacturing is a capital-intensive activity where tens of billions must be spent on developing new technology and building new capacity, TSMC has historically maintained a highly liquid balance sheet where cash easily represents over 25% of total asset. The company also exited Q3 with $47 billion in cash and short-term investments against $27 billion in total debt. Needless to say, TSMC is in an extremely strong financial position as the industry enters a downturn.

3. Attractive valuation

Let me start this section by asking how many companies can be the absolute leaders in their respective space, command a 50%+/35%+ gross/net margin, own a fortress balance sheet, yet still trade at a significant discount to peers? The answer is not many, and TSMC certainly belongs to the list. Prior to Berkshire's disclosure, TSMC was trading at 12x 2023 consensus EPS of $6.00, which is a massive discount to Western semiconductor names like ASML (ASML)/Nvidia (NVDA)/AMD (AMD)/Intel (INTC) at 30x/37x/20x/15x.

Conclusion

Warren Buffett is famously known for buying companies with favorable long-term prospects, strong profitability, a healthy balance sheet, and an attractive valuation. TSMC deservedly passed all the tests when shares suffered a massive selloff in Q3, and it's my view that Berkshire Hathaway will be handsomely rewarded once the market gets through the current industry downturn and fears over the geopolitical side of the story.

","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Taiwan Semiconductor: Warren Buffett Is Right On The Money
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nTaiwan Semiconductor: Warren Buffett Is Right On The Money\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2022-11-16 11:23 GMT+8 Seeking Alpha\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway Inc. While he was concerned about the situation that was unfolding, he was hesitant to withdraw his $20,000 worth of holdings from the cryptocurrency platform because he knew it would cost him money.

The customer had some outstanding bitcoin BTCUSD, +0.46% derivatives contracts on FTX.US and to withdraw his money the investor had to put in another $400 to cover some short options he had sold. But as the situation around FTX appeared to worsen, the New York area customer finally made up his mind. He paid the money and put in a withdrawal request last Thursday evening, and received his crypto an hour later.

The next morning, FTX and about 130 related entities, including FTX.US and trading firm Alameda Research, filed for bankruptcy protection in U.S. federal court.

“Thank God,” the New York-based crypto investor said. “I was lucky. I dodged it twice.” All FTX customers MarketWatch spoke to for this article requested to remain anonymous, citing fears of repercussions. The customers did share screenshots of their FTX transfers, which MarketWatch was able to review.

For the trader MarketWatch spoke with in New York, the FTX collapse was part of a pattern that had become familiar. Not too long ago, the investor pulled his money out of the Singapore-based crypto lending platform, Hodlnaut, three weeks before it froze withdrawals in August citing “market conditions”. Hodlnaut also reportedly held about SGD 18.3 million, or about $13.4 million worth of crypto, on FTX as of Oct. 28. A representative at Hodlnaut didn’t respond to a request seeking comment for this article.

Before its collapse, FTX was the third-largest crypto exchange by trading volume. Celebrities like Tom Brady, Gisele Bundchen, and Steph Curry endorsed the platform. The Miami Heat’s home basketball arena was named after it. FTX’s co-founder and former chief executive, Sam Bankman-Fried, graced the cover of Fortune Magazine, which wondered if he was the next Warren Buffett.

Now, there is little chance that customers who were enticed to use the platform will be able to recover their assets, analysts said. Based on a balance sheet shared with investors one day before FTX’s bankruptcy filing, the exchange had almost $9 billion in liabilities and $900 million in liquid assets, $5.5 billion in “less liquid” assets, and $3.2 billion in “illiquid” assets, according to a Bloomberg article citing anonymous sources. What’s worse, one day after the bankruptcy filing, John J. Ray III, FTX’s new chief executive, said in a statement that “unauthorized access to certain assets has occurred,” while crypto research firm Elliptic said $477 million is suspected to have been stolen from FTX. Representatives at FTX didn’t respond to a request seeking comment.

Several FTX customers and crypto industry participants described FTX’s collapse as “shocking,” even though the industry already saw the collapses of several key players this year, such as blockchain Terra, lender Celsius, and hedge fund Three Arrows Capital.

“For FTX to go down, it is pretty nuts,” said the New York-based crypto investor who managed to get his money out at the last minute. “Sam Bankman-Fried really seemed like he was going to be the one to bring on regulation and make the industry have more legitimacy,” the investor said.

Nevertheless, many retail investors have become conditioned this year to flee from any crypto platform that shows any hint of trouble, a dynamic that has hurt confidence in crypto-institutions, slowed down crypto adoption, and could increase the volatility around digital assets trading in the days and months ahead, analysts said.

In the case of FTX, some retail investors had become so “traumatized” by the crypto events that had taken place this year that they started moving their money out of the platform as soon as the ominous signs appeared.

There have been some “recurring themes” in crypto that led to customers’ losses, noted David Tawil, president and co-founder of digital asset fund ProChain Capital. “I think people that have either been hit by or have been close to a previous blow up, are figuring, why? Why wait? What’s the benefit of waiting?” Tawil said. “Once they hear anything, any sort of rumor or any sort of warning, they run to go ahead and take their money out.”

Last call before the fall

Last week, as Bankman-Fried took to Twitter to say, “FTX is fine. Assets are fine,” a 26-year-old Colorado-based customer of FTX.US withdrew about $10,000 in U.S. dollars from the exchange. The next day Binance, a rival exchange, signed a letter of intent to acquire FTX’s non-US assets. But the Colorado customer, who works for a private equity fund, tried to take out his remaining $1,200 from FTX.US., regardless. He was unable to retrieve those remaining funds.

A day later, Binance abandoned its deal for FTX, citing due diligence and reports about mishandled customer funds, and FTX soon filed for bankruptcy.

“With everything going on, it’s looking less and less likely that the money will ever get to my bank account,” the Colorado customer said about his $1,200 that remain stuck on FTX.US.

“Crypto has made me a bit of a pessimist,” the Colorado-based customer added. Though he didn’t expect FTX to collapse, “as soon as I saw anything potentially negative about FTX, I thought that’s more than enough to prompt me to withdraw my funds.”

That pessimism came in part from his previous experience of having about $50,000 stuck on Solana-based stablecoin protocol Cashio, which in March was hacked, causing a loss of some $52 million. Though the Colorado investor was able to recover most of his funds weeks later, the experience has kept his guard up. “I’ve been through this situation of not being able to withdraw money that I have,” he said.

The Colorado trader was also lucky enough to avoid a hack in October targeting decentralized crypto exchange Mango Markets, where he once also had an account. In May, he said he persuaded his fiancé to take out her $10,000 from Celsius after reading some criticism about the platform on Twitter. “I said, hey, we already had gone through enough with crypto, I think you should take your money out,” the investor told her girlfriend. It turned out to be the right choice – four weeks later, the lender froze all withdrawals and later filed for bankruptcy.

The Colorado-based investor, who mostly trades non-fungible tokens, said he chose to tap in the digital asset space for the potentially fruitful rewards, despite huge risks. Still, things such as FTX’s collapse “makes even people like me lose a lot of trust in the system,” he said.

A 22-year-old engineer, who is based in Australia, said he also pulled his $7,000 out of FTX last week, five hours after Bankman-Fried’s tweet that FTX was fine. “My first train of thought was if FTX becomes bankrupt or something, the Americans might save themselves,” the investor said. FTX.US was only available to U.S. customers, while FTX.com targeted customers in other areas of the world, including Australia. Bankman-Fried and many top FTX executives are American citizens.

“The Americans, they might save themselves. I’m going to be absolutely destroyed,” the Australia-based investor said.

FTX first froze withdrawals for most of its international customers, while some investors were able to take out their money from FTX.US for a few more days. In fact, one day before FTX and FTX.US filed for bankruptcy, Bankman-Fried tweeted that FTX.US “was not financially impacted by this shitshow. It’s 100% liquid.”

For his part, the Colorado-based customer said he felt lied to. “I guess I sort of understand where he (Bankman-Fried) is in this tough situation, and I feel bad for him,” the investor said. “But just to say FTX.US is completely liquid, not affected at all and then to lump them into a Chapter 11 bankruptcy, is mind boggling. The next morning, FTX and about 130 related entities, including FTX.US and trading firm Alameda Research, filed for bankruptcy protection in U.S. federal court.“Thank God,” the New York-based crypto investor said. Representatives at FTX didn’t respond to a request seeking comment.Several FTX customers and crypto industry participants described FTX’s collapse as “shocking,” even though the industry already saw the collapses of several key players this year, such as blockchain Terra, lender Celsius, and hedge fund Three Arrows Capital.“For FTX to go down, it is pretty nuts,” said the New York-based crypto investor who managed to get his money out at the last minute. “Sam Bankman-Fried really seemed like he was going to be the one to bring on regulation and make the industry have more legitimacy,” the investor said.Nevertheless, many retail investors have become conditioned this year to flee from any crypto platform that shows any hint of trouble, a dynamic that has hurt confidence in crypto-institutions, slowed down crypto adoption, and could increase the volatility around digital assets trading in the days and months ahead, analysts said.In the case of FTX, some retail investors had become so “traumatized” by the crypto events that had taken place this year that they started moving their money out of the platform as soon as the ominous signs appeared. “Once they hear anything, any sort of rumor or any sort of warning, they run to go ahead and take their money out.”Last call before the fallLast week, as Bankman-Fried took to Twitter to say, “FTX is fine. He was unable to retrieve those remaining funds.A day later, Binance abandoned its deal for FTX, citing due diligence and reports about mishandled customer funds, and FTX soon filed for bankruptcy.“With everything going on, it’s looking less and less likely that the money will ever get to my bank account,” the Colorado customer said about his $1,200 that remain stuck on FTX.US.“Crypto has made me a bit of a pessimist,” the Colorado-based customer added. Though he didn’t expect FTX to collapse, “as soon as I saw anything potentially negative about FTX, I thought that’s more than enough to prompt me to withdraw my funds.”That pessimism came in part from his previous experience of having about $50,000 stuck on Solana-based stablecoin protocol Cashio, which in March was hacked, causing a loss of some $52 million. Still, things such as FTX’s collapse “makes even people like me lose a lot of trust in the system,” he said.A 22-year-old engineer, who is based in Australia, said he also pulled his $7,000 out of FTX last week, five hours after Bankman-Fried’s tweet that FTX was fine. “My first train of thought was if FTX becomes bankrupt or something, the Americans might save themselves,” the investor said. FTX.US was only available to U.S. customers, while FTX.com targeted customers in other areas of the world, including Australia. Bankman-Fried and many top FTX executives are American citizens.“The Americans, they might save themselves. I’m going to be absolutely destroyed,” the Australia-based investor said.FTX first froze withdrawals for most of its international customers, while some investors were able to take out their money from FTX.US for a few more days. In fact, one day before FTX and FTX.US filed for bankruptcy, Bankman-Fried tweeted that FTX.US “was not financially impacted by this shitshow. It’s 100% liquid.”For his part, the Colorado-based customer said he felt lied to. “I guess I sort of understand where he (Bankman-Fried) is in this tough situation, and I feel bad for him,” the investor said. “But just to say FTX.US is completely liquid, not affected at all and then to lump them into a Chapter 11 bankruptcy, is mind boggling. I just don’t know how you can flat out lie like that,” he said.Bankman-Fried didn’t respond to a request seeking comment.Despite keeping most of his money intact, the Australian investor felt gloomy about the crypto space after FTX’s fall. “Imagine if the London Stock Exchange just shut down, and said yeah, we’re not gonna do any trading anymore, people will not be able to get their money out. How insane would that be?” the investor said. “Because that’s how this is. I don’t think anyone’s gonna have any faith anymore. In his latest letter to Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRK.A) (NYSE: BRK.B) shareholders, he mentioned that the company received $785 million in dividends from just one stock in 2021 (it was Apple).

Buffett's recent buys for Berkshire's portfolio also hints that dividends might have been on his mind. In the third quarter of 2022, he purchased eight stocks. Seven of them pay dividends. A few of them offer dividends that are quite attractive. Buffett just bought these three dividend stocks with yields of over 3%.

1. Paramount Global

Paramount Global (NASDAQ: PARA) stands out as Buffett's only high-yield purchase in the third quarter. The media company's dividend yield currently tops 5.1%.

Buffett's history with Paramount goes back to when the company was known as Viacom. He led Berkshire to open a position in Viacom in 2012. While the legendary investor later sold all of those shares, he apparently regained an interest in the stock in the first quarter of this year and has kept on buying.

Berkshire now owns 15% of Paramount Global's outstanding class B shares. The stock hasn't been a winner for Buffett so far, though, with a year-to-date decline of close to 40%.

What does the multibillionaire investor like about Paramount (other than its dividend)? Its valuation probably ranks high on the list. The stock trades below 12.8 times expected earnings.

2. Jefferies Financial Group

Buffett has long been a fan of bank stocks. But he's become less enamored of the financial services sector lately. That's what makes Berkshire's new position in Jefferies Financial Group (NYSE: JEF) somewhat surprising.

With a market cap of under $9 billion, Jefferies is much smaller than the other banks in Berkshire's portfolio. Unlike those other bigger corporations, Jefferies focuses only on investment banking and doesn't have a commercial banking unit. But it offers a dividend that rivals the big boys with a yield of more than 3.2%.

Jefferies' stock has also outgained Berkshire's other bank stocks so far this year. However, Buffett's investment in the company played a key role in that outperformance.

Berkshire owns only a tiny position in Jefferies, though. That could indicate that Buffett and his team began buying in the latter part of the third quarter and are continuing to scoop up shares in the fourth quarter.

3. Chevron

It wasn't surprising whatsoever that Buffett added to his position in Chevron (NYSE: CVX) in the third quarter. The oil and gas giant is Berkshire's third-largest holding, including shares owned by its New England Asset Management subsidiary.

Chevron's dividend yield of 3.1% is lower than it's been throughout much of the past 10 years. That's not because the company has cut its dividend, though. Actually, Chevron is a Dividend Aristocrat with 35 consecutive years of dividend increases.

Instead, the company's dividend yield is lower because its stock price has risen so much. Chevron stock has soared nearly 60% year to date. That follows a 39% gain in 2021.

Buffett seems to still think Chevron is attractively valued. Its shares trade at 11.2 times expected earnings. There's a good chance that this stock -- and its dividend -- go even higher.

","source":"motleyfoolau_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Warren Buffett Just Bought These 3 Dividend Stocks With Yields of Over 3%
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nWarren Buffett Just Bought These 3 Dividend Stocks With Yields of Over 3%\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2022-11-28 23:46 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
KEY POINTSParamount Global now ranks as one of the highest-yielding stocks in Berkshire's portfolio.Buffett could be buying even more of Jefferies Financial Group.Berkshire's adding to its position in...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{"JEF":"杰富瑞","CVX":"雪佛龙","PARA":"Paramount Global"},"source_url":"https://www.fool.com.au/2022/11/28/warren-buffett-just-bought-these-3-dividend-stocks-with-yields-of-over-3-usfeed/","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/e9f99090a1c2ed51c021029395664489","article_id":"2286590595","content_text":"KEY POINTSParamount Global now ranks as one of the highest-yielding stocks in Berkshire's portfolio.Buffett could be buying even more of Jefferies Financial Group.Berkshire's adding to its position in Chevron in Q3 wasn't surprising.Don't believe for one second that Warren Buffett doesn't think about dividends. That could indicate that Buffett and his team began buying in the latter part of the third quarter and are continuing to scoop up shares in the fourth quarter.3. ChevronIt wasn't surprising whatsoever that Buffett added to his position in Chevron (NYSE: CVX) in the third quarter. The oil and gas giant is Berkshire's third-largest holding, including shares owned by its New England Asset Management subsidiary.Chevron's dividend yield of 3.1% is lower than it's been throughout much of the past 10 years. That's not because the company has cut its dividend, though. Actually, Chevron is a Dividend Aristocrat with 35 consecutive years of dividend increases.Instead, the company's dividend yield is lower because its stock price has risen so much. Chevron stock has soared nearly 60% year to date. That follows a 39% gain in 2021.Buffett seems to still think Chevron is attractively valued. Its shares trade at 11.2 times expected earnings. There's a good chance that this stock -- and its dividend -- go even higher.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":158,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":192837003755656,"gmtCreate":1688108862358,"gmtModify":1688108865291,"author":{"id":"4088837488367880","authorId":"4088837488367880","name":"Snow wwww","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/6effde3b6dd8906e7dbf2faa91428dbb","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4088837488367880","authorIdStr":"4088837488367880"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$YANGZIJIANG SHIPBLDG HLDGS LTD(BS6.SI)$ <v-v data-views=\"1\"></v-v>continue to fight the peak mountain","listText":"$YANGZIJIANG SHIPBLDG HLDGS LTD(BS6.SI)$ <v-v data-views=\"1\"></v-v>continue to fight the peak mountain","text":"$YANGZIJIANG SHIPBLDG HLDGS LTD(BS6.SI)$ continue to fight the peak mountain","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":3,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/192837003755656","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":418,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[{"author":{"id":"3559581955535845","authorId":"3559581955535845","name":"koolgal","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/c05274d88ffc0434623e57350c52c70a","crmLevel":6,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"idStr":"3559581955535845","authorIdStr":"3559581955535845"},"content":"I am bullish too. The company shocked markets earlier this month when it reported it delivered only 5,811 vehicles in November, a 63% plunge from a year earlier.

XPeng once expected to deliver up to 21,000 vehicles in the fourth quarter. But after selling just 5,101 cars in October, also down a steep 40% from a year earlier, the fourth-quarter target looks nearly impossible. And having delivered just 109,465 vehicles so far this year, the company’s target of selling 250,000 vehicles for the year looks all but impossible as well.

XPeng’s completion of just 44% of its annual target with just one month left in the year is the lowest fulfillment rate among Chinese electric vehicle (EV) makers. But the company is hardly alone, with most of its peers also well behind their targets set at the start of this year when China’s new energy vehicle market was humming ahead full throttle.

Among China’s major brands, only BYD (BYDDY,OTCPK:BYDDF; 1211.HK; 002594.SZ), Hozon Auto and GAC Aion reached over 70% of their annual sales targets in the first three quarters of this year. The U.S.- and Hong Kong-listed NIO (NIO; 9866.HK) and Li Auto (LI; 2015.HK) achieved less than 60%.

XPeng is getting squeezed as one of the smaller in a crowded field of young EV makers that are seeing their sales slow rapidly after more than a year of turbocharged growth. At least some of the slowdown is coming as China gets set to end some of the many subsidies that had helped to propel the market. The country’s broader slowing economy isn’t helping either.

“Frankly, we are going through a very challenging period in pursuing our long-term goals,” said He Xiaopeng, the company’s CEO, on its earnings conference call.

XPeng’s difficult position is reflected in its price/sales (P/S) ratio, which remains relatively low versus its peers at around 2.5. By comparison, NIO currently trades at well above 3 times, while Li Auto is above 4. Tesla (TSLA), which also relies heavily on the China market, trades at a stratospheric 9, even after a nearly 50% decline for its stock over the last year.

The biggest challenge facing all the Chinese startups is how to turn losses into profits. That problem is especially acute for XPeng. The company posted revenue of 6.82 billion yuan ($980 million) in the third quarter, a year-on-year increase of 19.3%, according to its latest quarterly results released Nov. 30. But its net loss widened by a far larger 49% to 2.38 billion yuan.

“They’re in an increasingly competitive market and are getting squeezed in their current market position,” said Bill Russo, founder and CEO of Shanghai-based consulting firm Automobility. He added that XPeng also faces bigger cost pressures than its competitors due to its relative lack of vertical integration.

Stock surge

While XPeng’s third quarter report hardly looked encouraging, you would never know that based on investor reaction. XPeng’s stock soared 47% the day of the announcement, adding $3 billion to its market value. The stock has maintained all of those gains since then, amid a broader rally that has seen the broader Hang Seng China Enterprises Index rise 18% since the end of November.

But the rapid gains for XPeng’s stock have come after a long period of suffering. Before the Nov. 30 rally, XPeng’s shares had lost 76% of their value since July 1. And even after the rally, they are still down by a similar amount year to date. NIO and Li Auto aren’t doing much better, down 57% and 28%, respectively, since the start of the year.

In order to boost sales, XPeng has launched a limited-time price guarantee policy, effectively meaning that consumers who complete orders with deposit payments before the end of 2022 will continue to enjoy EV subsidies set to expire at the end of this year.

The entire group of EV makers is taking a hit from rising raw material price, combined with the continuous need for big R&D and marketing spending. XPeng has spent over 20 billion yuan alone on R&D and marketing since 2020.

As costs climb and sales slow, consolidation in the industry will inevitably accelerate, said Wang Dan, chief economist at Hang Seng Bank. “EV makers with the best technology and the most cash will survive and expand, similar to what happened in the solar industry five years ago,” she said. “We will see more Chinese EV carmakers exiting the industry.”

XPeng needs to sell more cars to boost its chances of emerging from the consolidation intact. But the reality isn’t great. The company’s previously popular P7 model is no longer a leader, and sales have been mediocre so far for its G9 model, launched in September, with only 2,353 units sold by the end of November.

“They entered with low premium pricing but there’s a lot of competition there,” said Russo. “And their … products are not standouts in their segment. So, to the premium customers, they are not premium enough, and to the middle market customers, they’re too expensive.”

By comparison, NIO and Li Auto are more clearly focused on the high end of the market and SUVs for home use, respectively. XPeng, with a focus on intelligent and self-driving technology, is stuck somewhere in the middle, with products costing from 150,000 yuan to 470,000 yuan, essentially competing with every other EV brand in the Chinese market, Russo said.

As the market slows and XPeng feels the squeeze, the company will focus on controlling its costs, improving operational efficiency, and streamlining investment projects, CEO He said on the investor call.

He added the company’s current cash of 40 billion yuan is sufficient to support it for now. Its fixed asset costs are expected to be less than 3 billion yuan next year, and capital expenditure in the following years is expected to drop significantly compared with 2022. That should help to improve the company’s cash flow situation, He said.

XPeng has announced that it will launch three new products in the first quarter of 2023, including a medium-sized SUV priced in the 200,000 yuan to 300,000 yuan range. The company expressed confidence that it will return to a stronger growth track next year, saying it expects to achieve a significant increase in sales volume and average selling prices, as well as revenue growth higher than the industry average.

","source":"seekingalpha_fund","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Premium Or Mid-Range? But after selling just 5,101 cars in October, also down a steep 40% from a year earlier, the fourth-quarter target looks nearly impossible. And having delivered just 109,465 vehicles so far this year, the company’s target of selling 250,000 vehicles for the year looks all but impossible as well.XPeng’s completion of just 44% of its annual target with just one month left in the year is the lowest fulfillment rate among Chinese electric vehicle (EV) makers. But the company is hardly alone, with most of its peers also well behind their targets set at the start of this year when China’s new energy vehicle market was humming ahead full throttle.Among China’s major brands, only BYD (BYDDY,OTCPK:BYDDF; 1211.HK; 002594.SZ), Hozon Auto and GAC Aion reached over 70% of their annual sales targets in the first three quarters of this year. The U.S.- and Hong Kong-listed NIO (NIO; 9866.HK) and Li Auto (LI; 2015.HK) achieved less than 60%.XPeng is getting squeezed as one of the smaller in a crowded field of young EV makers that are seeing their sales slow rapidly after more than a year of turbocharged growth. At least some of the slowdown is coming as China gets set to end some of the many subsidies that had helped to propel the market. The country’s broader slowing economy isn’t helping either.“Frankly, we are going through a very challenging period in pursuing our long-term goals,” said He Xiaopeng, the company’s CEO, on its earnings conference call.XPeng’s difficult position is reflected in its price/sales (P/S) ratio, which remains relatively low versus its peers at around 2.5. 30. But its net loss widened by a far larger 49% to 2.38 billion yuan.“They’re in an increasingly competitive market and are getting squeezed in their current market position,” said Bill Russo, founder and CEO of Shanghai-based consulting firm Automobility. He added that XPeng also faces bigger cost pressures than its competitors due to its relative lack of vertical integration.Stock surgeWhile XPeng’s third quarter report hardly looked encouraging, you would never know that based on investor reaction. NIO and Li Auto aren’t doing much better, down 57% and 28%, respectively, since the start of the year.In order to boost sales, XPeng has launched a limited-time price guarantee policy, effectively meaning that consumers who complete orders with deposit payments before the end of 2022 will continue to enjoy EV subsidies set to expire at the end of this year. The entire group of EV makers is taking a hit from rising raw material price, combined with the continuous need for big R&D and marketing spending. XPeng has spent over 20 billion yuan alone on R&D and marketing since 2020.As costs climb and sales slow, consolidation in the industry will inevitably accelerate, said Wang Dan, chief economist at Hang Seng Bank. “EV makers with the best technology and the most cash will survive and expand, similar to what happened in the solar industry five years ago,” she said. “We will see more Chinese EV carmakers exiting the industry.”XPeng needs to sell more cars to boost its chances of emerging from the consolidation intact. But the reality isn’t great. The company’s previously popular P7 model is no longer a leader, and sales have been mediocre so far for its G9 model, launched in September, with only 2,353 units sold by the end of November.“They entered with low premium pricing but there’s a lot of competition there,” said Russo. “And their … products are not standouts in their segment. So, to the premium customers, they are not premium enough, and to the middle market customers, they’re too expensive.”By comparison, NIO and Li Auto are more clearly focused on the high end of the market and SUVs for home use, respectively. XPeng, with a focus on intelligent and self-driving technology, is stuck somewhere in the middle, with products costing from 150,000 yuan to 470,000 yuan, essentially competing with every other EV brand in the Chinese market, Russo said.As the market slows and XPeng feels the squeeze, the company will focus on controlling its costs, improving operational efficiency, and streamlining investment projects, CEO He said on the investor call.He added the company’s current cash of 40 billion yuan is sufficient to support it for now. Its fixed asset costs are expected to be less than 3 billion yuan next year, and capital expenditure in the following years is expected to drop significantly compared with 2022. That should help to improve the company’s cash flow situation, He said.XPeng has announced that it will launch three new products in the first quarter of 2023, including a medium-sized SUV priced in the 200,000 yuan to 300,000 yuan range. The company expressed confidence that it will return to a stronger growth track next year, saying it expects to achieve a significant increase in sales volume and average selling prices, as well as revenue growth higher than the industry average.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":144,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9923842097,"gmtCreate":1670835563920,"gmtModify":1676538442898,"author":{"id":"4088837488367880","authorId":"4088837488367880","name":"Snow wwww","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/6effde3b6dd8906e7dbf2faa91428dbb","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4088837488367880","authorIdStr":"4088837488367880"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$ASCENDAS REAL ESTATE INV TRUST(A17U.SI)$ <v-v data-views=\"0\"></v-v>","listText":"$ASCENDAS REAL ESTATE INV TRUST(A17U.SI)$ <v-v data-views=\"0\"></v-v>","text":"$ASCENDAS REAL ESTATE INV TRUST(A17U.SI)$","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9923842097","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":67,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9985738417,"gmtCreate":1667456291340,"gmtModify":1676537921531,"author":{"id":"4088837488367880","authorId":"4088837488367880","name":"Snow wwww","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/6effde3b6dd8906e7dbf2faa91428dbb","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4088837488367880","authorIdStr":"4088837488367880"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$YANGZIJIANG SHIPBLDG HLDGS LTD(BS6.SI)$<v-v data-views=\"1\"></v-v>BullishBullishBullishBullish $1.40 end the year","listText":"$YANGZIJIANG SHIPBLDG HLDGS LTD(BS6.SI)$<v-v data-views=\"1\"></v-v>BullishBullishBullishBullish $1.40 end the year","text":"$YANGZIJIANG SHIPBLDG HLDGS LTD(BS6.SI)$BullishBullishBullishBullish $1.40 end the year","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9985738417","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":110,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9956769559,"gmtCreate":1674205905872,"gmtModify":1676538930339,"author":{"id":"4088837488367880","authorId":"4088837488367880","name":"Snow wwww","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/6effde3b6dd8906e7dbf2faa91428dbb","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4088837488367880","authorIdStr":"4088837488367880"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Great ariticle, would you like to share it?","listText":"Great ariticle, would you like to share it?","text":"Great ariticle, would you like to share it?","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9956769559","repostId":"9956470180","repostType":1,"repost":{"id":9956470180,"gmtCreate":1674175823841,"gmtModify":1676538927662,"author":{"id":"3527667667103859","authorId":"3527667667103859","name":"TigerEvents","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/c266ef25181ace18bec1262357bbe1a8","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3527667667103859","authorIdStr":"3527667667103859"},"themes":[],"title":"[Events] Find \"HAPPYCNY\" cards & win Tiger Coins","htmlText":"As the Lunar New Year approaches, Tiger has prepared several surprises for you.
