Alphabet (GOOG) (NASDAQ:GOOGL), meanwhile, has so far been quiet on the layoff front, with the exception of a layoff of 15% of its staff in its Verily Life Sciences unit (about 200 employees).</p><p>In the heyday years of the 2010s, tales of workplace perks among tech giants were legendary. From nap rooms to free, full-service cafeterias and coffee bars, the workplace amenities of silicon valley were the subject of much envy. However, with rising interest rates, inflation, and squeezed margins, even tech companies are finding that they may have overspent on headcount, and that some of these perks are no longer defensible.</p><p>Some observers have wondered why Alphabet has been so quiet in recent months about any plans to reduce headcount and cut costs, especially since the stock fared so poorly in 2022, falling more than 30% even after a 20-for-1 stock split. Granted the company announced it would slow hiring in its Q3 call, but when everyone else in your cohort is reducing headcount and you’re not, it raises questions.</p><p>Employee expenses are by far Alphabet’s largest expense, after all. Headcount at Alphabet increased from 150,028 in Q3 2021 to 186,779 in 2022. This is a 24% increase year-over-year—hardly a snail’s pace. It only stands to reason that in the vast corporate landscape that is Alphabet, there would be some fat to trim <i>somewhere. </i>So, the question has gone, why hasn’t Alphabet been more proactive?</p><h2><b>The Three Year Reset</b></h2><p>We speculate - and it is true speculation - that Alphabet’s reluctance throughout the latter half of 2022 to announce meaningful cost-cutting initiatives at the company even as competitors were doing so might have something to do with the fact that Alphabet’s CEO, Sundar Pichai, was due for a re-evaluation of his triennial compensation package. Since CEO pay package negotiations can take months, it’s not perhaps surprising that the company wouldn’t undertake large changes while the leader of the organization is unclear as to how they will be compensated for such actions. The announcement of the new package was quietly dropped in an 8k filing on December 21st.</p><p>Pichai’s new comp package is enormous, but is also, on the face of it, good news for investors. The board explicitly states in the December 21st 8K that two design changes were made “such that more of the award’s vesting [is] dependent on performance.”</p><p>The first part of Pichai’s pay package are two tranches of Performance Stock Units (PSUs), each worth a target value of $63,000,000 in Alphabet Class C stock and have a potential payout range from 0%-200% of their target value. A nice feature of this is that Pichai will have to act quickly if he wants to secure this bundle of cash—unlike some executive pay packages with four or five year time horizons, Pichai’s first tranche of $63,000,000 vests based on a total shareholder return measured from 2023-2024, and uses the average weighted price of the Class C stock from November 2022 as its baseline.</p><p>The second tranche—in the same amount as the first—will be evaluated over a performance period between 2023-2025.</p><p>Importantly, the board increased the proportion of performance stock units from 43% of the overall package to 60%. The board also raised the performance requirement for PSUs to the 55th percentile of total shareholder return from the 50th, which means that Pichai’s hurdle for execution is higher. In the world of corporate pay packages—and silicon valley tech pay packages in particular—this feels like a significant shift, and perhaps a tacit admission from the board that they feel that not only is the stock being undervalued by the market, but that there are proverbial belts to tighten around the company.</p><p>In all, Pichai&#39;s comp package totals out to an approximate maximum payout of stock-performance tied payout of $252,000,000 over the next three years. While the exact details of how the award calculations will be made—such as how much the stock needs to rise above its November 2022 average price—are yet to be published in the upcoming Alphabet 10k, we nonetheless have a nice window into what kind of incentives Sundar Pichai has to improve operations at Alphabet in the eyes of shareholders. And, if we could paraphrase Charlie Munger, understanding how executives are incentivized is a powerful tool indeed.</p><h2><b>What Do We Think Will Happen?</b></h2><p>For one, we think the playing field is tilted in Pichai’s favor given that Alphabet’s valuation is, like so many tech firms, plumbing depths not seen for many years. A metric we favor for valuing a firm against its historical average is its stock price vs. next twelve month (NTM) EBITDA estimates. Alphabet has, for many years, tracked its EBITDA estimates very, very closely. 2022 brought a change to all that, and a gulf now exists between the two that has not existed in the past ten years.</p><p></p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/4dc5d93d4acf3cf999c0346647fb25dd\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>GOOGL Price vs NTM EBITDA (Koyfin)</p><p>This is, we believe, most certainly an overreaction on the market’s part. Just a quick glance at Alphabet’s quarterly EBITDA reports going back 20 years shows a company that has been able to expand and maintain margin at a maniacal pace.</p><p></p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/dc3f8e0dd3df4910d048b1c9b9ceffee\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>GOOGL 20-year Quarterly EBITDA (Koyfin)</p><p>The sudden disconnect between price and valuation is, to us, a bit of a head scratcher. To be sure, FX headwinds and a deteriorating macro picture have hurt Alphabet a bit as marketers reduce their ad spend—this can be seen in the recent slump in the chart above of Alphabet’s quarterly EBITDA. But we remind readers that the core business of Alphabet hasn’t changed and that the use of Google remains a staple of most people’s lives.</p><p>Nonetheless, it provides Alphabet’s CEO with a rare opportunity. He has just been awarded an enormous compensation package tied to the price of his company’s stock, and his performance will be judged based on Alphabet&#39;s average stock price from November 2022 - one of the most value and price-depressed times in the company’s history. Given that he can earn up to 200% of his awards should the stock perform well enough (again, we’ll have to wait for the Alphabet 10k to determine just <i>how </i>well), we can say that he is certainly well-incentivized.</p><p>So, what will he do? Of course we can endlessly speculate, but in our mind the most likely course of action is to reduce headcount and other costs where possible and to continue to buy back shares at this reduced valuation. Other deployments of capital—increases in R&amp;D, paying down debt—won’t be seen by the street as immediately impactful, especially given Alphabet’s stalwart balance sheet and exceptional leverage ratios.</p><h2><b>The Bottom Line</b></h2><p>Alphabet presents a very interesting scenario for investors right now. To recap, Alphabet:</p><ol><li>Is a company with a monopolistic enterprise in Google and another near-monopolistic property in YouTube.</li><li>Has a large historical price-value disconnect.</li><li>Has a CEO who has recently been awarded an enormous compensation package tied to the positive performance of its stock.</li><li>Has plenty of cash on hand to deploy for shareholder-friendly activities like additional stock buybacks.</li><li>Has plenty of places in its business to cut costs and further improve margins.</li></ol><p>With what we know at this time, this seems to be a recipe for success over the next 12-24 months. Risks to this idea are that when the company publishes its 10k, the actual performance metrics tied to Pichai’s performance are quite weak. However, with rising interest rates, inflation, and squeezed margins, even tech companies are finding that they may have overspent on headcount, and that some of these perks are no longer defensible.Some observers have wondered why Alphabet has been so quiet in recent months about any plans to reduce headcount and cut costs, especially since the stock fared so poorly in 2022, falling more than 30% even after a 20-for-1 stock split. Granted the company announced it would slow hiring in its Q3 call, but when everyone else in your cohort is reducing headcount and you’re not, it raises questions.Employee expenses are by far Alphabet’s largest expense, after all. Headcount at Alphabet increased from 150,028 in Q3 2021 to 186,779 in 2022. This is a 24% increase year-over-year—hardly a snail’s pace. It only stands to reason that in the vast corporate landscape that is Alphabet, there would be some fat to trim somewhere. So, the question has gone, why hasn’t Alphabet been more proactive?The Three Year ResetWe speculate - and it is true speculation - that Alphabet’s reluctance throughout the latter half of 2022 to announce meaningful cost-cutting initiatives at the company even as competitors were doing so might have something to do with the fact that Alphabet’s CEO, Sundar Pichai, was due for a re-evaluation of his triennial compensation package. Since CEO pay package negotiations can take months, it’s not perhaps surprising that the company wouldn’t undertake large changes while the leader of the organization is unclear as to how they will be compensated for such actions. The announcement of the new package was quietly dropped in an 8k filing on December 21st.Pichai’s new comp package is enormous, but is also, on the face of it, good news for investors. The board explicitly states in the December 21st 8K that two design changes were made “such that more of the award’s vesting [is] dependent on performance.”The first part of Pichai’s pay package are two tranches of Performance Stock Units (PSUs), each worth a target value of $63,000,000 in Alphabet Class C stock and have a potential payout range from 0%-200% of their target value. A nice feature of this is that Pichai will have to act quickly if he wants to secure this bundle of cash—unlike some executive pay packages with four or five year time horizons, Pichai’s first tranche of $63,000,000 vests based on a total shareholder return measured from 2023-2024, and uses the average weighted price of the Class C stock from November 2022 as its baseline.The second tranche—in the same amount as the first—will be evaluated over a performance period between 2023-2025.Importantly, the board increased the proportion of performance stock units from 43% of the overall package to 60%. The board also raised the performance requirement for PSUs to the 55th percentile of total shareholder return from the 50th, which means that Pichai’s hurdle for execution is higher. In the world of corporate pay packages—and silicon valley tech pay packages in particular—this feels like a significant shift, and perhaps a tacit admission from the board that they feel that not only is the stock being undervalued by the market, but that there are proverbial belts to tighten around the company.In all, Pichai's comp package totals out to an approximate maximum payout of stock-performance tied payout of $252,000,000 over the next three years. While the exact details of how the award calculations will be made—such as how much the stock needs to rise above its November 2022 average price—are yet to be published in the upcoming Alphabet 10k, we nonetheless have a nice window into what kind of incentives Sundar Pichai has to improve operations at Alphabet in the eyes of shareholders. And, if we could paraphrase Charlie Munger, understanding how executives are incentivized is a powerful tool indeed.What Do We Think Will Happen?For one, we think the playing field is tilted in Pichai’s favor given that Alphabet’s valuation is, like so many tech firms, plumbing depths not seen for many years. A metric we favor for valuing a firm against its historical average is its stock price vs. next twelve month (NTM) EBITDA estimates. Alphabet has, for many years, tracked its EBITDA estimates very, very closely. 2022 brought a change to all that, and a gulf now exists between the two that has not existed in the past ten years.GOOGL Price vs NTM EBITDA (Koyfin)This is, we believe, most certainly an overreaction on the market’s part. Just a quick glance at Alphabet’s quarterly EBITDA reports going back 20 years shows a company that has been able to expand and maintain margin at a maniacal pace.GOOGL 20-year Quarterly EBITDA (Koyfin)The sudden disconnect between price and valuation is, to us, a bit of a head scratcher. To be sure, FX headwinds and a deteriorating macro picture have hurt Alphabet a bit as marketers reduce their ad spend—this can be seen in the recent slump in the chart above of Alphabet’s quarterly EBITDA. But we remind readers that the core business of Alphabet hasn’t changed and that the use of Google remains a staple of most people’s lives.Nonetheless, it provides Alphabet’s CEO with a rare opportunity. He has just been awarded an enormous compensation package tied to the price of his company’s stock, and his performance will be judged based on Alphabet's average stock price from November 2022 - one of the most value and price-depressed times in the company’s history. Given that he can earn up to 200% of his awards should the stock perform well enough (again, we’ll have to wait for the Alphabet 10k to determine just how well), we can say that he is certainly well-incentivized.So, what will he do? Of course we can endlessly speculate, but in our mind the most likely course of action is to reduce headcount and other costs where possible and to continue to buy back shares at this reduced valuation. Other deployments of capital—increases in R&D, paying down debt—won’t be seen by the street as immediately impactful, especially given Alphabet’s stalwart balance sheet and exceptional leverage ratios.The Bottom LineAlphabet presents a very interesting scenario for investors right now. To recap, Alphabet:Is a company with a monopolistic enterprise in Google and another near-monopolistic property in YouTube.Has a large historical price-value disconnect.Has a CEO who has recently been awarded an enormous compensation package tied to the positive performance of its stock.Has plenty of cash on hand to deploy for shareholder-friendly activities like additional stock buybacks.Has plenty of places in its business to cut costs and further improve margins.With what we know at this time, this seems to be a recipe for success over the next 12-24 months. Risks to this idea are that when the company publishes its 10k, the actual performance metrics tied to Pichai’s performance are quite weak. Corrections often occur because of an event, and stocks are indiscriminately sold across the board.</p><p>A wide sell-off gives investors opportunities to grab stocks that may be caught up in the frenzy but whose business will be unaffected. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/TWOA.U\">Two</a> stocks I believe are great buys are <b>Shopify </b>(NYSE:SHOP) and <b>Alphabet</b> (NASDAQ:GOOG) (NASDAQ:GOOGL). Each has seen its stock price fall recently, but the businesses are still thriving.</p><h2>1. Shopify</h2><p>Starting a business can be difficult; selling the product online can be even more challenging. Shopify simplifies the process by providing website templates, payment processing, and shipping solutions at an affordable $29 per month. As a business grows and can afford to expand its e-commerce tool kit, Shopify has other tiers with upgraded features.</p><p>It&#39;s not just a small business enabler. Many large brands like <b>Kraft Heinz </b>and KKW Beauty -- Kim Kardashian&#39;s cosmetic line -- use its software. Shopify recently announced it was expanding its offerings for larger companies by providing two-day shipping and easy returns. An undertaking like this requires significant investment in warehouse space. Fortunately, Shopify is forward-thinking and already acquired 6 River Systems -- a robotic warehouse company -- to provide top-notch automation within the facilities. Shopify is providing best-in-class e-commerce solutions to businesses of all sizes, and this latest move reinforces that notion.</p><p>The company splits its revenue into two segments, merchant and subscription solutions. Subscription solutions are the base prices customers pay each month to access the tools Shopify offers. Growth in this segment can occur through two main avenues: New customers, or customers upgrading tiers. During the third quarter, Shopify&#39;s subscription solution grew 37% year over year to $336 million, but only made up 30% of revenue.</p><p>The larger segment, merchant solutions, grows as the stores on its platform increase their sales. As Shopify&#39;s customers do better, it does better. With merchant solutions up 51% year over year to $788 million, it&#39;s clear that countless businesses on Shopify are succeeding.</p><p>Shopify isn&#39;t consistently profitable and is best valued by comparing its stock price with its revenue, captured by the price-to-sales (PS) metric.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/78410274e2bde12a83ef6462d23bce93\" tg-width=\"720\" tg-height=\"433\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/></p><p>SHOP PS Ratio data by YCharts</p><p>After an elevated valuation during most of 2020 and 2021, Shopify&#39;s PS ratio has returned to pre-pandemic levels after the recent sell-off. While investors shouldn&#39;t expect Shopify to return to previous valuation highs, revenue growth going forward should directly correlate with its stock price if current valuation levels are maintained. With revenue growing 46% overall and Shopify expanding with larger businesses, the future is bright for the company&#39;s stock.</p><h2>2. Alphabet</h2><p>Contrasting Shopify&#39;s high growth and unprofitability is Alphabet -- the parent company of Google and YouTube -- which also has high growth but is insanely profitable. With its search engine and video sharing market dominance, Alphabet&#39;s primary offerings are unlikely to be disrupted by competitors.</p><table border=\"1\"><tbody><tr><th>Segment</th><th>Market Share</th></tr><tr><td>Google Search Engine</td><td>86%</td></tr><tr><td>YouTube</td><td>76%</td></tr></tbody></table><p>Data source: Statista and Datanyze.</p><p>Because of each segment&#39;s supremacy, it can offer advertisers a diverse audience, making Alphabet a valuable advertising partner. While advertising spending grew marginally during 2020, 2021 was a different story. Google&#39;s Q3 search ad revenue grew 44% to $37.9 billion -- for context, Shopify&#39;s gross merchandise volume for Q3 was $41.8 billion. Comparing the incredible 44% growth with Q3 2020&#39;s mere 3% showcases how advertising businesses fare during difficult economic times. On the YouTube side, growth was similar at 43%, but revenue was much less than its search engine division at $7.2 billion.</p><p>At its core, Alphabet is an advertising business. Because advertisement spending tends to drop during recessions -- it dropped by 13% across the board during the 2008 recession -- Alphabet will likely receive a lower valuation due to this risk.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/fe1f802170b39b9e567e64d0288e7aad\" tg-width=\"720\" tg-height=\"433\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/></p><p>GOOG PE Ratio data by YCharts</p><p>Still, a 29 price-to-earnings ratio is dirt cheap for a company growing its earnings at a 71% clip. As long as the economy doesn&#39;t grind to a halt, Alphabet&#39;s advertisement business will continue providing absurd growth numbers.</p><p>One division that isn&#39;t a market leader is Google Cloud. It only has an 8% market share versus <b>Amazon</b> Web Services&#39; 32% and <b>Microsoft </b>Azure&#39;s 21%, according to Statista. With Azure growing 46% during the fourth quarter, investors need to watch Alphabet&#39;s Q4 earnings report to see if Google Cloud is gaining ground or if it is struggling against its bigger competitors. Regardless, if advertisement revenue continues to increase, Alphabet will still report strong earnings.</p><p>With most of the correction concerns circling around interest rate hikes by the Federal Reserve, it hardly affects Shopify&#39;s and Alphabet&#39;s business. Although the stock prices may mean some short-term pain, each business is focused on the long term, just like investors should be. Purchasing both these stocks on sale and holding for three to five years allows investors to reap the benefits of a growing business while riding out any market-induced volatility in the stock prices. Shopify simplifies the process by providing website templates, payment processing, and shipping solutions at an affordable $29 per month. As a business grows and can afford to expand its e-commerce tool kit, Shopify has other tiers with upgraded features.It's not just a small business enabler. Many large brands like Kraft Heinz and KKW Beauty -- Kim Kardashian's cosmetic line -- use its software. Shopify recently announced it was expanding its offerings for larger companies by providing two-day shipping and easy returns. An undertaking like this requires significant investment in warehouse space. Fortunately, Shopify is forward-thinking and already acquired 6 River Systems -- a robotic warehouse company -- to provide top-notch automation within the facilities. Shopify is providing best-in-class e-commerce solutions to businesses of all sizes, and this latest move reinforces that notion.The company splits its revenue into two segments, merchant and subscription solutions. Subscription solutions are the base prices customers pay each month to access the tools Shopify offers. Growth in this segment can occur through two main avenues: New customers, or customers upgrading tiers. During the third quarter, Shopify's subscription solution grew 37% year over year to $336 million, but only made up 30% of revenue.The larger segment, merchant solutions, grows as the stores on its platform increase their sales. As Shopify's customers do better, it does better. With merchant solutions up 51% year over year to $788 million, it's clear that countless businesses on Shopify are succeeding.Shopify isn't consistently profitable and is best valued by comparing its stock price with its revenue, captured by the price-to-sales (PS) metric.SHOP PS Ratio data by YChartsAfter an elevated valuation during most of 2020 and 2021, Shopify's PS ratio has returned to pre-pandemic levels after the recent sell-off. While investors shouldn't expect Shopify to return to previous valuation highs, revenue growth going forward should directly correlate with its stock price if current valuation levels are maintained. With revenue growing 46% overall and Shopify expanding with larger businesses, the future is bright for the company's stock.2. AlphabetContrasting Shopify's high growth and unprofitability is Alphabet -- the parent company of Google and YouTube -- which also has high growth but is insanely profitable. With its search engine and video sharing market dominance, Alphabet's primary offerings are unlikely to be disrupted by competitors.SegmentMarket ShareGoogle Search Engine86%YouTube76%Data source: Statista and Datanyze.Because of each segment's supremacy, it can offer advertisers a diverse audience, making Alphabet a valuable advertising partner. While advertising spending grew marginally during 2020, 2021 was a different story. Google's Q3 search ad revenue grew 44% to $37.9 billion -- for context, Shopify's gross merchandise volume for Q3 was $41.8 billion. Comparing the incredible 44% growth with Q3 2020's mere 3% showcases how advertising businesses fare during difficult economic times. On the YouTube side, growth was similar at 43%, but revenue was much less than its search engine division at $7.2 billion.At its core, Alphabet is an advertising business. Because advertisement spending tends to drop during recessions -- it dropped by 13% across the board during the 2008 recession -- Alphabet will likely receive a lower valuation due to this risk.GOOG PE Ratio data by YChartsStill, a 29 price-to-earnings ratio is dirt cheap for a company growing its earnings at a 71% clip. As long as the economy doesn't grind to a halt, Alphabet's advertisement business will continue providing absurd growth numbers.One division that isn't a market leader is Google Cloud. It only has an 8% market share versus Amazon Web Services' 32% and Microsoft Azure's 21%, according to Statista. With Azure growing 46% during the fourth quarter, investors need to watch Alphabet's Q4 earnings report to see if Google Cloud is gaining ground or if it is struggling against its bigger competitors. Regardless, if advertisement revenue continues to increase, Alphabet will still report strong earnings.With most of the correction concerns circling around interest rate hikes by the Federal Reserve, it hardly affects Shopify's and Alphabet's business. Although the stock prices may mean some short-term pain, each business is focused on the long term, just like investors should be. Purchasing both these stocks on sale and holding for three to five years allows investors to reap the benefits of a growing business while riding out any market-induced volatility in the stock prices. Between fiscal 2016 and fiscal 2021 (which ended last June), Microsoft&#39;s revenue grew at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 14.5%, while its earnings per share (EPS) increased at a CAGR of 30.8%.</p><p>That robust growth enabled Microsoft to generate plenty of cash to expand its ecosystem with dozens of acquisitions -- including LinkedIn in 2016, GitHub in 2018, ZeniMax in 2021, and Activision Blizzard this year.</p><p>The stickiness of Microsoft&#39;s ecosystem -- which spans across PCs, consoles, mobile apps, servers, and cloud services -- enables it to continuously lock in both enterprise customers and mainstream consumers. Analysts expect Microsoft&#39;s revenue and earnings to rise 18% and 16%, respectively, this year, as those growth engines continue to fire on all cylinders.</p><p>Sony&#39;s growth was a lot less impressive. Between fiscal 2015 and fiscal 2020 (which ended in March 2021), its revenue grew at a CAGR of just 1.8%. It posted a net loss in 2015, but it returned to profitability the following year, and its EPS increased at a CAGR of 68% between 2016 and 2020.</p><p>Sony&#39;s gaming, financial, and music businesses stayed strong throughout the pandemic in 2020. But its pictures, chipmaking, and consumer electronics divisions all struggled with pandemic-related headwinds and disruptions.</p><p>That balance shifted in the first nine months of fiscal 2021. Its pictures and consumer electronics segments recovered, but its gaming business slowed down against tough comps, the financial segment sold fewer life insurance policies, and its image sensor shipments remained sluggish.</p><p>The concerns regarding Microsoft&#39;s purchase of Activision are likely overblown since Microsoft doesn&#39;t plan to lock in any of its top franchises as platform exclusives anytime soon. Sony also plans to acquire more publishers, starting with Bungie for $3.6 billion, to strengthen its own stable of gaming franchises.</p><p>Sony faces more significant supply chain headwinds than Microsoft, but analysts still expect its revenue to grow 11% this year. Analysts expect Sony&#39;s earnings per share to decline 33% on tax-related charges, but the company still expects its operating profit to rise 26% for the full year.</p><h2>The valuations and verdict</h2><p>Microsoft has better growth metrics than Sony, but its high forward price-to-earnings ratio of 33 reflects those strengths. By comparison, <b>Alphabet </b>and <b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/FB\">Meta Platforms</a></b> trade at 23 times and 20 times forward earnings, respectively.</p><p>Sony trades at just 17 times forward earnings. That discount likely reflects the market&#39;s trepidation regarding Microsoft&#39;s Activision deal, the supply chain headwinds for its chip business, and its slower life insurance sales.</p><p>Microsoft&#39;s stock is more expensive, but I think it&#39;s better to pay a premium for a high-quality business than to settle with a decent one in this wobbly market. Between fiscal 2016 and fiscal 2021 (which ended last June), Microsoft's revenue grew at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 14.5%, while its earnings per share (EPS) increased at a CAGR of 30.8%.That robust growth enabled Microsoft to generate plenty of cash to expand its ecosystem with dozens of acquisitions -- including LinkedIn in 2016, GitHub in 2018, ZeniMax in 2021, and Activision Blizzard this year.The stickiness of Microsoft's ecosystem -- which spans across PCs, consoles, mobile apps, servers, and cloud services -- enables it to continuously lock in both enterprise customers and mainstream consumers. Analysts expect Microsoft's revenue and earnings to rise 18% and 16%, respectively, this year, as those growth engines continue to fire on all cylinders.Sony's growth was a lot less impressive. Between fiscal 2015 and fiscal 2020 (which ended in March 2021), its revenue grew at a CAGR of just 1.8%. It posted a net loss in 2015, but it returned to profitability the following year, and its EPS increased at a CAGR of 68% between 2016 and 2020.Sony's gaming, financial, and music businesses stayed strong throughout the pandemic in 2020. But its pictures, chipmaking, and consumer electronics divisions all struggled with pandemic-related headwinds and disruptions.That balance shifted in the first nine months of fiscal 2021. Its pictures and consumer electronics segments recovered, but its gaming business slowed down against tough comps, the financial segment sold fewer life insurance policies, and its image sensor shipments remained sluggish.The concerns regarding Microsoft's purchase of Activision are likely overblown since Microsoft doesn't plan to lock in any of its top franchises as platform exclusives anytime soon. Sony also plans to acquire more publishers, starting with Bungie for $3.6 billion, to strengthen its own stable of gaming franchises.Sony faces more significant supply chain headwinds than Microsoft, but analysts still expect its revenue to grow 11% this year. Analysts expect Sony's earnings per share to decline 33% on tax-related charges, but the company still expects its operating profit to rise 26% for the full year.The valuations and verdictMicrosoft has better growth metrics than Sony, but its high forward price-to-earnings ratio of 33 reflects those strengths. By comparison, Alphabet and Meta Platforms trade at 23 times and 20 times forward earnings, respectively.Sony trades at just 17 times forward earnings. That discount likely reflects the market's trepidation regarding Microsoft's Activision deal, the supply chain headwinds for its chip business, and its slower life insurance sales.Microsoft's stock is more expensive, but I think it's better to pay a premium for a high-quality business than to settle with a decent one in this wobbly market. The ratio is also lower than ChargePoint&#39;s average ratio of 19 in the last year.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/9b1ea1a8ca83a40482d93044f37c26c0\" tg-width=\"720\" tg-height=\"387\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>CHPT P/S Ratio (Forward 1 year) data by YCharts</p><p>ChargePoint&#39;s ratio compares favorably with its peers <b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/BLNK\">Blink Charging</a></b> and <b>EVgo</b>, though it&#39;s higher than <b>Volta&#39;s </b>ratio.</p><p>ChargePoint is growing its network and revenue quickly. It has around 163,000 charging ports globally. In the third quarter, the company&#39;s revenue grew 79% year over year. However, profitability is a key challenge for ChargePoint. Notably, none of the EV charging companies are profitable yet.</p><p>Still, EV charging companies should become profitable in the future, considering that the demand for EV charging infrastructure is expected to remain strong and grow over time. It remains to be seen how EV charging companies will monetize this growth, but as a leading company, ChargePoint looks better placed than others to benefit from this growth.</p><h2>2. Ford Motor Company</h2><p><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/F\"><b>Ford Motor Company</b> </a> is investing heavily in electric vehicles. It intends to spend more than $30 billion on EVs through 2025. Its plans include setting up a nearly 6-square-mile campus in Tennessee to build electric F-Series pickups and batteries. Also, the company has partnered with Korea&#39;s SK Innovation to set up two battery plants in Kentucky. Ford is setting up an EV plant in Germany as well.</p><p>Ford intends to make 40% to 50% of all its vehicles electric by 2030. The automaker wants to become the second-largest electric vehicle manufacturer in the next couple of years. Notably, even if Ford delivers according to its plans, half of its sales would still be internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles by 2030.</p><p>Even if Ford&#39;s profit margins and stock prices don&#39;t rise dramatically from the current levels, Ford looks poised to grow in the EV segment. Ford seems to have a better chance of establishing itself as a top EV maker than most of the new pure-play EV companies.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/a30592639d4c1e142896a57fa199be7f\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"466\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Image source: Volkswagen.</p><h2>3. Volkswagen</h2><p><b>Volkswagen </b>(OTC:VWAGY) delivered 8.9 million vehicles globally in 2021. Of these, 452,900 units, or 5.1%, were battery electric vehicles (BEVs). That&#39;s significantly higher from 2020 when BEVs accounted for just 2.5% of Volkswagen&#39;s total vehicle sales. In the U.S., Volkswagen sold 37,200 BEVs in 2021, capturing the second-highest share of the U.S. BEV market.</p><p>Though BEVs are a small percentage of Volkswagen&#39;s total sales right now, the company expects half of its sales to be electric by 2030. Volkswagen intends to spend 52 billion Euros on electrification through 2026. In short, the top automaker is positioning itself to be a key player in the EV market in the long term.</p><h2>4. Lucid Group</h2><p>Among pure-play EV companies, <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/LCID\"><b>Lucid Group</b> </a> looks interesting. Starting deliveries in October last year, Lucid beat established EV maker <b>Tesla</b> in terms of range. With a range of 520 miles, Lucid&#39;s Air model offered at least 100 miles of additional range over Tesla&#39;s Model S. Attractive designs and features helped Lucid Air bag <i>MotorTrend&#39;s</i> Car of the Year Award.</p><p>The company has more than 17,000 reservations for the Lucid Air. Moreover, Lucid has robust growth plans. It plans to expand in international markets, starting with Saudi Arabia and Europe. Lucid plans to launch a new model, Gravity, in 2023. Overall, things look positive for Lucid so far. The company has immense growth potential and a long runway.</p><p>It is, however, important to note that Lucid faces stiff competition from new EV companies as well as legacy car companies. Secondly, though Lucid&#39;s initial deliveries have received a positive response, the company has yet to produce profitably at scale. In short, spreading your bets across top stocks could be the best way to invest in the volatile and evolving EV sector.</p><h2>5. BYD</h2><p>Chinese automaker $<b>BYD</b> (OTC:BYDDY)$ is the fourth-largest EV maker in the world after Tesla, Volkswagen, and SAIC. BYD sold roughly 320,000 BEVs in 2021.</p><p>The company has been growing its sales rapidly. In the first nine months of 2021, BYD&#39;s sales grew 38% year over year. In December, plug-in vehicles accounted for almost 95% of BYD&#39;s vehicle sales. Peloton&#39;s products were in high demand when economies were in various phases of lockdowns and nonessential businesses, including gyms, were forced to close their doors to the public. That limited the ways folks could exercise, and they turned to Peloton in large numbers.</p><p>The surge in demand was so pronounced that Peloton had difficulty fulfilling orders. At one point, customers had to wait more than ten weeks to receive their exercise equipment. In response, management made investments to increase manufacturing capacity and reduce delivery times.</p><p>Unfortunately for Peloton, several effective vaccines against COVID-19 were developed, economies started reopening, and demand for in-home exercise equipment decreased.
