Indexes down: Dow 0.11%, S&P 0.13%, Nasdaq 0.04%
\n
All main indexes post solid monthly performances
\n
\n
Aug 31 (Reuters) - Wall Street finished marginally lower on Tuesday, although the slightly subdued ending to August failed to detract from a strong monthly performance by its three main indexes, in what is traditionally regarded as a quiet period for equities.
\n
Having all posted lifetime highs in the second half of the month, including four record closings in five sessions for the S&P 500 prior to Tuesday, the three benchmarks were weighed by technology stocks on the final day.
\n
For the S&P, which rose 2.9% in August, it was a seventh straight month of gains, while the Dow and the Nasdaq advanced 1.2% and 4%, respectively, since the end of July.
\n
The performance reflects the level of investor confidence in U.S. equities derived from the Federal Reserve's continued dovish tone toward tapering its massive stimulus program.
\n
\"After all the monetary and fiscal interventions, the question is where do we go from here? Does the S&P go to 5,000, and how does it get there?\" said Eric Metz, chief executive officer of SpringRock Advisors.
\n
While a strong recovery in economic growth and corporate earnings have boosted U.S. stocks, investors are concerned about rising coronavirus cases and the path of Fed policy.
\n
U.S. consumer confidence fell to a six-month low in August, according to survey data from the Conference Board on Tuesday, offering a cautious note for the economic outlook.
\n
A Reuters poll last week showed strategists believe the S&P 500 is likely to end 2021 not far from its current level.
\n
\"Where's leadership going to come from, for equities to power higher? Is it earnings growth, is it growth versus value, technology or energy? This needs to be defined, but I think the next leg-up for equities will be sector driven,\" Metz added.
\n
Technology stocks have continued to garner interest from investors in recent days, given the benefits which lower rates have on their future earnings, although the sector's index
\n
was among the worst performers on Tuesday.
\n
Shares of Apple fell 0.8% after hitting a lifetime high in the previous session, while Zoom Video Communications Inc tumbled 16.7% as it signaled a faster-than-expected easing in demand for its video-conferencing service after a pandemic-driven boom.
\n
Seven of the 11 major S&P sectors retreated. Among those that did not were the real estate and the communications services indexes, which closed at record highs.
\n
On Tuesday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 39.11 points, or 0.11%, to 35,360.73, the S&P 500 lost 6.11 points, or 0.13%, to 4,522.68 and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 6.66 points, or 0.04%, to 15,259.24.
\n
Kansas City Southern dropped 4.4% in afternoon trading after the U.S. rail regulator rejected a voting trust structure that would have allowed Canadian National Railway Co to proceed with its $29 billion proposed acquisition of its U.S. peer.
\n
Volume on U.S. exchanges was 9.84 billion shares, compared with the 8.98 billion average for the full session over the last 20 trading days.
\n
The S&P 500 posted 43 new 52-week highs and no new lows; the Nasdaq Composite recorded 119 new highs and 23 new lows.
\n
(Reporting by Shashank Nayar in Bengaluru and David French in New York; Editing by Aditya Soni and Lisa Shumaker)
","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; This year is particularly suspenseful as companies match up against the second quarter of 2020, where some of them got a huge pandemic boost, and others got a huge pandemic bashing. Many companies have bounced back big, topping 2019 numbers, and others have demonstrated lackluster growth in the face of tough comparisons.
\n
Investors have rewarded stocks accordingly. They sent Home Depot stock down this week after it posted weak comps after a huge surge last year, and they rewarded Coca-Cola in July after it posted a 42% revenue rise.
\n
But things are not quite that simple, and investors should focus on the long-term outlook when evaluating a stock. That's why I'm going with Airbnb(NASDAQ:ABNB),Walt Disney(NYSE:DIS), and Upstart Holdings(NASDAQ:UPST)as hot stocks to buy this month. All three posted incredible growth in the second quarter, and they all have enormous upside.
\n
\n
Travel is back, and Airbnb is leading the way
\n
Airbnb already demonstrated signs of a comeback in the first quarter of 2021, with a 5% revenue increase after staggering declines in 2020. But the second quarter was just monstrous, with revenue increasing 299% and gross booking value increasing 320% year over year.
\n
That's way better than a simple pandemic comparison. And all the reasons it made such a fierce recovery are the same ones why it has so much potential to stay ahead of traditional travel and widen its lead. Most of those reasons flow from the same source: its adaptive and flexible model. That means that as travel shifts, Airbnb shifts along with it.
\n
As signs of recovery come into view, that became visible in a few ways. One was an increase in stays of a month or more. More people are using Airbnb rentals as a home rather than a vacation, which isn't nearly as feasible in traditional travel accommodations. Another is customers branching out into off-the-beaten-path destinations. That's also more challenging with standard hotels, which you can't always find in far-flung locations.
\n
One way to see Airbnb's strength is how it turns it's nights booked into revenue. Nights booked increased 197% in Q2 year over year, and they decreased 1% from 2019. But Airbnb's revenue skyrocketed past that number. That means it's making more money from its bookings, and it demonstrates resilience. It's also turning more of that revenue into profit, as net loss contracted from over $576 million in Q2 2020, and more than $1 billion in Q1 2021, to $68 million in Q2 2021.
\n
Despite what seemed like a breakout quarter, investors snubbed the travel company. That might be because it's already somewhat expensive, trading at almost 20 times sales. But that's typical for a growth company, and it shouldn't stop you from taking a position.
\n
Disney's back in action
\n
Disney, on the other hand, is a perpetual crowd pleaser, both in its parks and in the markets. And it came through big in the third quarter, growing revenue 45%. That reversed the 42% decline in Q3 2020, despite parks functioning at limited capacity and other experiences still not running at all. All told, third-quarter sales came in just 16% below the same period of 2019, before the start of the coronavirus pandemic
\n
Parks revenue rebounded with a more than 300% increase in Q3, or about two-thirds of the 2019 metric, and it accounted for about a quarter of the company's total sales. Media and entertainment distribution, the newly structured content-based segment, increased 18%. Streaming remained the most aggressive revenue driver in Q3, reaching almost 174 million accounts for Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+ and topping estimates.
\n
The compelling story for Disney stock comes from all of its businesses combined. There simply isn't another media company on the global scene that combines best-in-class parks and resorts with an unrivaled film library. CEO Bob Chapek has promised lots of new content, including Marvel and Star Wars series that are likely to be big winners and drive membership.
\n
Disney stock is down 3% year to date as of this writing, but there's so much upside to unlock for the top stock in the entertainment sector.
\n
\n
Artificial intelligence for banking
\n
Despite a slow initial public offering in December, Upstart exploded into one of the hottest stocks on the market, gaining 420% year to date. But the investing veteran is more than just a one-trick, or one-stock, pony.
\n
He has other picks for growth investors as well as a new actively managed ETF: The Future Fund (ticker: FFND), designed to capitalized on 10 megatrends he sees changing the world.
\n
That fund is only a couple of weeks old. Black has been at the investing game for about 30 years, starting as a research analyst at Bernstein in 1992.
\n
After Bernstein, Black moved to the buy-side with stints at Goldman Sachs Asset Management, Janus and Aegon, among others. After a brief respite following Aegon, Black jumped into the world of actively managed ETFs.
\n
He sat down with Barron’s to talk about his new fund, his approach to investing and some of the stocks he’s invested in. An edited version of the conversation follows.
\n
Barron’s: We probably have to start with Tesla (TSLA). How do you value Tesla stock?
\n
Black: I take where I think global [car sales are] going to be in about five years, and I take the EV adoption–it will get to 25% by 2025. This is the big investment controversy on Tesla: As competitors enter the market, can it keep its roughly 25% EV share? If it can, I get about $32 or so of earnings in 2025. And if I even put a 50 multiple on it, which is pretty low given projected 55% average annual earnings growth. I get a $1,600 price. And that’s worth about $1,100 today.
\n
Market share is the big controversy? What about self-driving cars?
\n
Stop saying Tesla has valuation equal to $1,000 a share because of the EV business. And then another $1,000 because of robotaxis.
\n
Tesla robotaxis like Waymo won’t be a thing?
\n
I think you’re going to have commercial robotaxi. And you’re going to have consumer robotaxi.
\n
Tesla has a head start, but competitors, especially those from China, are offering more expensive systems with vision, lidar, radar and HD mapping allowing them to close the gap. Everyone will get there eventually–which Elon has said. Tesla’s features will still let Tesla sell more Teslas.
\n
Why did you start the Future Fund ETF?
\n
Secular growth [is] its cornerstone. We’re looking to capitalize on 10 secular megatrends that are changing the world.
\n
What are they?
\n
They are: [1] 24/7 information and entertainment, [2] social networking, [3] mobility–working from anywhere–[4] e-commerce, [5] fintech innovation, [6] big data and security, [7] people living longer, [8] lifestyle betterment, [9] automation and [10] sustainability. Those are the 10.
\n
And so what we try to do is find companies that [have] the megatrends as tailwinds. No. 1, we’re looking for high growth, 20% revenue growth. We’re looking for unlevered brands, meaning, brands that are very successful in, say, one segment, and they bring them into other segments, or brands that are successful in one geography, and can go global.
\n
No. 2, we’re looking for investment controversy. We’re looking for something where there is a fight, and where investors don’t agree. And that’s what creates opportunity.
\n
What’s your research process like?
\n
We go out, and I talk. We talk to a lot of competitors. When I was an analyst, I used to do focus groups. For 2,000 bucks, you could get 10 people in a room, and ask them why they don’t like about Beyond Meat [BYND] versus Impossible [Foods]. We can usually find information that gives me a research edge to answer the controversy.
\n
And how do you build your portfolio?
\n
We want a portfolio that’s high conviction, meaning no more than about 40 names. The top 10 names are about 40% of the portfolio. So that’s high conviction to me.
\n
We think we have very strong buy and sell discipline. When we put something in the portfolio, we want it to have at least 2:1 risk-adjusted upside versus downside.
\n
What else do you like, besides Tesla?
\n
We have Google [parent Alphabet ], which is changing the world. Google is a mega cap stock just like Tesla is. But we think You Tube is 24/7 information and entertainment. YouTube is way undervalued. They’re still monetizing [search]. It has good 15% to 20% revenue growth. At 22 times projected earnings, it’s still [an attractive] price to us.
\n
Another name we have is Chipotle Mexican Grill [CMG]. It fits with this megatrend of eating healthy, staying fit. We call it lifestyle betterment. Their product innovation has been superb–they launched these rolled quesadillas, which are going to have monster 15% same-store sales comps for them in the third quarter. It’s a great stock for us. Not cheap. But it has high growth.
\n
How about a couple more?
\n
One of the names that’s controversial we own is Tencent [TCEHY]. It’s one of the largest Internet companies in the world. It has 1.2 billion WeChat users. We believe that Chinese regulatory fears are overdone. Tencent is now trading at about 25 times next year’s earnings. We view it as having probably 20% revenue growth for at least the next few years.
\n
Generac [GNRC] is another one. We’ll call it a climate change stock. Because climate change is happening, you have a lot of wildfires. You have a lot of weather patterns that aren’t normal. And in new homes today, one of the most common features that people are putting is a generator.
\n
Can Generac sales be disrupted by battery storage in homes?
\n
Battery and solar powered walls and roofs are still expensive–$40,000. A Generac system starts at $2,000.
\n
One more?
\n
Snap [SNAP] is another name. If you have kids, Snap is one of the [apps] everybody’s using. The ARPU [or average revenue per user] is $13 annually, up about 30% over a year ago. Active users will be up about 20% this year. Do you use Tik Tok?
\n
No.
\n
The biggest risk to Snap is something else comes along that the 18 to 25-year-old crowd wants to use that’s better. And Tik Tok is a disrupter to Snap. But I have kids in this age group, three of them, and they all use Snap.
\n
The monetization has just begun. The global expansion has just begun. I think you have got at least three or four years of [growth].
\n
Thanks, Gary.
","source":"lsy1610680873436","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
5 Stock Ideas From an Investor Who Predicted Tesla Would Rise to $1,000
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n5 Stock Ideas From an Investor Who Predicted Tesla Would Rise to $1,000\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-09-08 17:28 GMT+8 Barron's\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Investors listen to what Gary Black has to say about Tesla. And in new homes today, one of the most common features that people are putting is a generator.\nCan Generac sales be disrupted by battery storage in homes?\nBattery and solar powered walls and roofs are still expensive–$40,000. A Generac system starts at $2,000.\nOne more?\nSnap [SNAP] is another name. If you have kids, Snap is one of the [apps] everybody’s using. The ARPU [or average revenue per user] is $13 annually, up about 30% over a year ago. Active users will be up about 20% this year. Do you use Tik Tok?\nNo.\nThe biggest risk to Snap is something else comes along that the 18 to 25-year-old crowd wants to use that’s better. And Tik Tok is a disrupter to Snap. But I have kids in this age group, three of them, and they all use Snap.\nThe monetization has just begun. The global expansion has just begun. I think you have got at least three or four years of [growth].\nThanks, Gary.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":541,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":816087692,"gmtCreate":1630455703016,"gmtModify":1676530306609,"author":{"id":"4089079505452570","authorId":"4089079505452570","name":"GarretKoo","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/e9e183ddf754386b7a3aa0eec9634e52","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4089079505452570","authorIdStr":"4089079505452570"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Good","listText":"Good","text":"Good","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":4,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/816087692","repostId":"2164869989","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":508,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":880436040,"gmtCreate":1631070578380,"gmtModify":1676530459299,"author":{"id":"4089079505452570","authorId":"4089079505452570","name":"GarretKoo","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/e9e183ddf754386b7a3aa0eec9634e52","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4089079505452570","authorIdStr":"4089079505452570"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Wow","listText":"Wow","text":"Wow","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":3,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/880436040","repostId":"1148244903","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1148244903","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1631027025,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1148244903?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-09-07 23:03","market":"other","language":"en","title":"Cryptos Just Puked...","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1148244903","media":"zerohedge","summary":"Bitcoin (and Ethereum) just took a second, larger, leg lower after ramping across the long weekend a","content":"
Bitcoin (and Ethereum) just took a second, larger, leg lower after ramping across the long weekend ahead ofEl Salvador's 'Bitcoin Day' legal tender rollout.
\n
Bitcoin plunged from $53k to below $49k...
\n
Source: Bloomberg
\n
And Ethereum has tumbled back below $3500 (and was notably less bid on the El Salvador excitement)...
\n

\n
Source: Bloomberg
\n
Some chatter that the ETH move was triggered byshort-term rotation to Solano after NFT headlines.
","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html;
