bear market in U.S. stocks has seen its lows, but a meeting of Federal Reserve policy makers this coming week might test the nerves of would-be bulls.

"I expect we will continue to see market volatility until investors have seen more convincing evidence that this period of Fed hawkishness is behind us, and I do not expect that to be the message" when central bankers conclude a two-day meeting on July 27, said Lauren Goodwin, economist and portfolio strategist at New York Life Investments, in a phone interview.

Disappointing results from social-media platform Snap Inc. (SNAP) trimmed a weekly rise in stocks on Friday, but the benchmark indexes still saw healthy gains. The S&P 500 rose 2.6% in the past week to end near 3,962 after pushing above the 4,000 threshold early Friday for the first time since June 9. The Dow Jones Industrial Average logged a weekly gain of 2%, while the Nasdaq Composite advanced 3.3%.

The bounce this week lifted the indexes off 2022 lows after the S&P 500 sank to a finish of 3,666.67 on June 16.

The rebound has been fueled in part by a dynamic that's seen investors treat bad news on the economic front as good news for stocks, said James Reilly, an economist at Capital Economics, in a Friday note.

That may sound strange, but it likely reflects, in part, a view among investors that weaker economic data will lead the Fed to raise interest rates less than previously thought, Reilly wrote. There's evidence for that in market-based expectations for rate increases, which have been pared back lately (see chart below), a development that has provided support for equity valuations, he said.

Market expectations are for the Fed to deliver a 75 basis point interest rate increase on Wednesday, matching the increase seen in June, which was the largest since 2002.

Meanwhile, the past week delivered plenty of evidence of slowing economic activity.

The U.S. services purchasing managers index fell to a 26-month low of 47 in July from 51.6 in the prior month, based on a "flash" survey from S&P Global Market Intelligence. A reading of less than 50 signals a contraction in activity.

On Thursday, weekly jobless claims rose to the highest level since November but remained historically low, the Philadelphia Fed manufacturing index unexpectedly fell deeper into negative territory, and the Conference Board said its leading economic index shows that a U.S. recession around the end of the year and early next is now likely.

U.S. economic data due next week include a first estimate of second-quarter gross domestic product, that's expected to show a second straight contraction. While such an outcome is often described as a technical recession, a still strong labor market and other factors are seen making it unlikely the National Bureau of Economic Research, the official arbiter of the business cycle, will declare one.

Reilly said he doubts slowing activity will slow the Fed's roll.

"Our central forecast is that U.S. economic growth will remain weak, but not so weak as to deter the Fed from hiking aggressively over the rest of this year. Such an outcome would probably mean rising discount rates and disappointing growth in corporate profits, which would be a fairly toxic combination for equity prices," he wrote.

Many Fed watchers, including some ex-policy makers, see a Fed intent on convincing market participants of its desire to snuff out inflation.

Former Richmond Fed President Jeffrey Lacker on Friday said policy makers would need to keep raising interest rates even if there is a recession. "To let your foot up off the brake before inflation has come down" is just a "recipe for another recession down the road," Lacker said, in an interview on Bloomberg Television

Even if the economy slowed fast enough to cause Fed policy makers to back off, it probably wouldn't be great news for equities, Reilly argued. That's because corporate earnings would weaken further than the firm already expects, he said. It's also unlikely that the support equities have seen as expectations for the fed-funds rate have moderated would continue in a severe slowdown, with history showing that valuations have tended to fall during such periods as appetite for risk deteriorated.

Goodwin, however, said there's more to the stock market's recent resilience.

"The market, on average, was anticipating a tougher earnings season than what we're seeing so far," while guidance has also been more upbeat, she said, acknowledging that it's still early days.

Through Friday morning, 75.5% of the S&P 500 companies that had reported have beaten consensus analyst projections for earnings per share. The average was by about 4.7%, according to I/B/E/S data provided by Refinitiv. That compares with 66% of companies beating EPS estimates in a typical quarter since 1994, and an average beat margin of 9.5% for the prior four quarters.

On revenue, 68.9% of the companies have topped forecasts by an average of about 1.3%, compared with 62% of companies beating in a typical quarter since 2002 and an average beat rate of 3.4% for the prior four quarters.

Earnings Watch:Here are 5 things we've learned so far from earnings season

Markets have been dominated by worries over red-hot inflation and the threat of recession, so a "somewhat more sanguine" read from companies so far was a dose of good news, Goodwin said.

Indeed, investors have seemed to cycle between fears over inflation and recession, market watchers said. Red-hot inflation was the dominant worry as stocks tumbled and Treasury yields soared in the first half of 2022. More recently, market action indicates investors have focused more on the prospect of recession as the Fed aggressively tightens policy.

So what should investors do as the focus shifts from inflation toward recession ?

Goodwin said inflation will remain a primary consideration when it comes to portfolio positioning because recession-resilient assets, such as cash, Treasurys and high-grade corporate bonds that worked in the last cycle can create a significant drag on wealth creation.

To deal with expected volatility, New York Life is moving up in quality within asset classes. For example, it's strongly overweight high-yield debt in its portfolios on expectations the corporate environment will remain pretty robust, she said, but is moving up in quality within high yield.

Keeping rising consumer prices in mind, it also means looking at equity and fixed-income securities that have cash flows linked to inflation, she said.

","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Will the Federal Reserve Kill the Stock-Market Bounce?
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nWill the Federal Reserve Kill the Stock-Market Bounce?\n
\n\n
\n\n\n<div class=\"head\" \">\n\n\n

\n\n
\n
Dow Jones
\n
2022-07-24 08:02
\n
\n\n
\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n

A summer rebound is stirring hopes the bear market in U.S. stocks has seen its lows, but a meeting of Federal Reserve policy makers this coming week might test the nerves of would-be bulls.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average logged a weekly gain of 2%, while the Nasdaq Composite advanced 3.3%.The bounce this week lifted the indexes off 2022 lows after the S&P 500 sank to a finish of 3,666.67 on June 16.The rebound has been fueled in part by a dynamic that's seen investors treat bad news on the economic front as good news for stocks, said James Reilly, an economist at Capital Economics, in a Friday note. That may sound strange, but it likely reflects, in part, a view among investors that weaker economic data will lead the Fed to raise interest rates less than previously thought, Reilly wrote. There's evidence for that in market-based expectations for rate increases, which have been pared back lately (see chart below), a development that has provided support for equity valuations, he said.Market expectations are for the Fed to deliver a 75 basis point interest rate increase on Wednesday, matching the increase seen in June, which was the largest since 2002.Meanwhile, the past week delivered plenty of evidence of slowing economic activity. The U.S. services purchasing managers index fell to a 26-month low of 47 in July from 51.6 in the prior month, based on a \"flash\" survey from S&P Global Market Intelligence. A reading of less than 50 signals a contraction in activity. On Thursday, weekly jobless claims rose to the highest level since November but remained historically low, the Philadelphia Fed manufacturing index unexpectedly fell deeper into negative territory, and the Conference Board said its leading economic index shows that a U.S. recession around the end of the year and early next is now likely.U.S. economic data due next week include a first estimate of second-quarter gross domestic product, that's expected to show a second straight contraction. While such an outcome is often described as a technical recession, a still strong labor market and other factors are seen making it unlikely the National Bureau of Economic Research, the official arbiter of the business cycle, will declare one.Reilly said he doubts slowing activity will slow the Fed's roll.\"Our central forecast is that U.S. economic growth will remain weak, but not so weak as to deter the Fed from hiking aggressively over the rest of this year. Such an outcome would probably mean rising discount rates and disappointing growth in corporate profits, which would be a fairly toxic combination for equity prices,\" he wrote. Many Fed watchers, including some ex-policy makers, see a Fed intent on convincing market participants of its desire to snuff out inflation.Former Richmond Fed President Jeffrey Lacker on Friday said policy makers would need to keep raising interest rates even if there is a recession. \"To let your foot up off the brake before inflation has come down\" is just a \"recipe for another recession down the road,\" Lacker said, in an interview on Bloomberg TelevisionEven if the economy slowed fast enough to cause Fed policy makers to back off, it probably wouldn't be great news for equities, Reilly argued. Buffett's core strategy centers around buying shares of companies with remarkably strong underlying businesses (deep competitive moats, global brand recognition, reliable and growing free cash flows, etc.), yet whose shares trade at a discount relative to their intrinsic value.

And this value-oriented approach has certainly served Buffett well during his tenure as Berkshire CEO. Since taking the reins of the diversified holding company 56-plus years ago, Berkshire's stock has delivered total returns on capital in excess of 6,450%. In fact, $10,000 invested in Berkshire stock at the time Buffett become CEO would be worth approximately $654,890 today.

Berkshire's various holdings aren't all top value stocks, however. The reality of the situation is that Berkshire, along with most other mega-funds, often gets special incentives, such as an elevated dividend yield, to buy shares of a company in bulk.

As a result, the value proposition offered to large holding firms like Berkshire is often drastically different than the one available to ordinary retail investors via a company's common stock. Retail investors, in turn, shouldn't necessarily buy shares of a Buffett stock simply because it looks cheap based on a classic valuation metric such as price to earnings, price to book, or price to sales.

Armed with this insight, let's break down whether Berkshire's three cheapest holdings, based on their forward-looking price-to-earnings ratios, are bona fide value stocks suitable for retail investors.

A top big pharma stock

At a hair under eight times forward earnings, the pharmaceutical giant Bristol Myers Squibb (NYSE:BMY) is Berkshire's third-cheapest stock holding at the moment. Bristol's shares have essentially treaded water over the past year due to its three top-selling medications (Eliquis, Opdivo, and Revlimid) losing market exclusivity this decade.

While this wave of patent expirations may be worrisome at first glance, the drugmaker does have a solid plan in place to not only offset these future sales declines, but to keep its top line humming along all the way out to 2030. Namely, Bristol has multiple new drug launches planned over the next few years, several of which are for potential blockbuster medications.

The long and short of it is that this isn't Bristol's first bout with the patent cliff. The company has lost market exclusivity for scores of blockbuster medications in the past. Yet it has always managed to hit on new growth products to create enormous value for long-term shareholders. Value-oriented investors, in turn, shouldn't hesitate to capitalize on the market's overreaction to the pharma titan's ongoing portfolio churn.

A potential sleeping giant

Shares of the large-cap automaker General Motors (NYSE:GM) are currently trading at 7.43 times forward earnings. That's good for second place on Berkshire's list of cheapest stock holdings. The auto giant's stock has stagnated over the last year in response to the rise of electric vehicles, the market-wide disinterest in classic value stocks, and the upcoming interest rate hikes by the Federal Reserve that will surely make monthly payments more expensive for most car buyers.

General Motors, though, may have some magic in it that the market has yet to fully appreciate. Last summer, the car giant announced an intriguing plan to invest heavily in electric vehicles, autonomous vehicles, and batteries. With a global commercial footprint and rock solid branding power, General Motors could prove to be a formidable competitor in these high-growth segments of the market.

That said, General Motors' latent value proposition, albeit massive, may take a few years to win over investors. So, while this auto stock does come across as a compelling buy, this Buffett value stock will likely require a multi-year holding period to realize its full potential.

Buffett's cheapest stock holding

With its shares trading at 3.12 times forward earnings, Israeli generic and branded drug giant Teva Pharmaceutical Industries (NYSE:TEVA) is Berkshire's cheapest stock holding by a wide margin.

The drugmaker's shares have lost three-quarters of their value over the last five years due to a series of unfortunate events. Specifically, Teva took on far too much debt to acquire Actavis' generic drug portfolio back in 2016, it didn't have another franchise-level medication waiting in the wings to replace the multiple sclerosis drug Copaxone following its loss of exclusivity, and it has been embroiled in a string of costly lawsuits.

Teva's long-awaited turnaround, though, does seem to be coming into focus now, thanks to three key developments. First, the company has slowly built a well-rounded product portfolio that should return it to sustainable levels of growth soon. In fact, $10,000 invested in Berkshire stock at the time Buffett become CEO would be worth approximately $654,890 today.Image source: Getty Images.Berkshire's various holdings aren't all top value stocks, however. The reality of the situation is that Berkshire, along with most other mega-funds, often gets special incentives, such as an elevated dividend yield, to buy shares of a company in bulk.As a result, the value proposition offered to large holding firms like Berkshire is often drastically different than the one available to ordinary retail investors via a company's common stock. Retail investors, in turn, shouldn't necessarily buy shares of a Buffett stock simply because it looks cheap based on a classic valuation metric such as price to earnings, price to book, or price to sales.Armed with this insight, let's break down whether Berkshire's three cheapest holdings, based on their forward-looking price-to-earnings ratios, are bona fide value stocks suitable for retail investors.A top big pharma stockAt a hair under eight times forward earnings, the pharmaceutical giant Bristol Myers Squibb (NYSE:BMY) is Berkshire's third-cheapest stock holding at the moment. Value-oriented investors, in turn, shouldn't hesitate to capitalize on the market's overreaction to the pharma titan's ongoing portfolio churn.A potential sleeping giantShares of the large-cap automaker General Motors (NYSE:GM) are currently trading at 7.43 times forward earnings. That's good for second place on Berkshire's list of cheapest stock holdings. The auto giant's stock has stagnated over the last year in response to the rise of electric vehicles, the market-wide disinterest in classic value stocks, and the upcoming interest rate hikes by the Federal Reserve that will surely make monthly payments more expensive for most car buyers.General Motors, though, may have some magic in it that the market has yet to fully appreciate. So, while this auto stock does come across as a compelling buy, this Buffett value stock will likely require a multi-year holding period to realize its full potential.Buffett's cheapest stock holdingWith its shares trading at 3.12 times forward earnings, Israeli generic and branded drug giant Teva Pharmaceutical Industries (NYSE:TEVA) is Berkshire's cheapest stock holding by a wide margin. The drugmaker's shares have lost three-quarters of their value over the last five years due to a series of unfortunate events. Specifically, Teva took on far too much debt to acquire Actavis' generic drug portfolio back in 2016, it didn't have another franchise-level medication waiting in the wings to replace the multiple sclerosis drug Copaxone following its loss of exclusivity, and it has been embroiled in a string of costly lawsuits.Teva's long-awaited turnaround, though, does seem to be coming into focus now, thanks to three key developments. First, the company has slowly built a well-rounded product portfolio that should return it to sustainable levels of growth soon. Second, its various legal problems ought to be resolved in the not-so-distant future. Third, Teva's ongoing deleveraging process has significantly improved the health of its balance sheet over the past few years. Teva's stock thus appears poised for a major rebound, perhaps as soon as this year.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":24,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9090349156,"gmtCreate":1643096547230,"gmtModify":1676533773591,"author":{"id":"4090042197781310","authorId":"4090042197781310","name":"Flyboy","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/3b5d0e035e4f454edb128c020a2e41a9","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4090042197781310","authorIdStr":"4090042197781310"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Ok","listText":"Ok","text":"Ok","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":4,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9090349156","repostId":"1169452881","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1169452881","pubTimestamp":1643078452,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1169452881?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2022-01-25 10:40","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Tesla Stock Is Getting Hammered. That offered some relief. Looking ahead, investors should keep a couple of moving averages in mind when thinking about where Tesla stock is headed in the short run.

Shares of Tesla were down 9.8% to $851.47 at Monday’s lows. They bounced back, up more than $78, to close at $930, a 1.5% drop. Nearly all stocks rebounded, but Tesla fared worse than the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average — both of which were up 0.3% on the day. The Nasdaq Composite Index rose 0.6%.

It was, frankly, a wild day for markets. The Dow was down more than 1,000 points at one point—and it has never closed positive after being down at least 1,000 points, according to Dow Jones Market Data. It posted the largest comeback to close into the green since Oct. 10, 2008, when the index was down 6.2%, but closed up 0.3%.

Monday’s action adds to the wild recent ride for Tesla stock. The company delivered almost 309,000 vehicles; Wall Street was expecting roughly 270,000.

But then rising interest rates, inflation. and macroeconomic fears started to drag down high-growth stocks. Moving averages are one of the important metrics used by traders. A stock can find support at one moving average but also can have trouble breaking through another one when shares are rising.

With Tesla at $930 a share, the next significant benchmark on the downside is the auto maker’s 200-day moving average of about $810 a share. There are many other technical indicators to watch, but that moving average is key for investors to watch in coming days. It should be the worse-case scenario for shares if the selling hasn’t stopped.

Tesla stock’s 100-day moving average is about $960. If shares can punch through that, then they could head back above $1,000. The stock’s 50-day moving average is about $1,050. That could represent the next level of resistance in an up market.

Tesla is set to report fourth-quarter earnings on Wednesday evening, and a beat could stem the tide of recent selling pressure. Analysts are projecting Tesla to earn about $2.30 a share, and the highest estimates are nearly $3. Anything close to that number should give the stock a boost. Tesla’s growth is so steep, a comparison with the year-ago fourth quarter isn’t meaningful, but the company earned $1.86 a share in the most recent third quarter.

Of course, the market could stop dropping too.
