the key economies of Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand.</p>\n<p>The SGD&nbsp;also breached the key support level of $1.35 per USD on 8 July and has weakened since. Tesla boosted its performance by cutting features it said were unused or unneeded and raising U.S. vehicle prices.</p>\n<p>Shares of the world’s most valuable automaker rose 1.5% in extended trade.</p>\n<p>In a call with investors and analysts, Tesla executives said that volume production growth will depend on parts availability, and Musk cautioned the shortage of semiconductors will continue.</p>\n<p>“The global chip shortage situation remains quite serious,” Musk said.</p>\n<p>Still, Musk said Tesla expects to launch production this year of the Model Y SUV at factories under construction in Texas and Germany. He said the company expects battery cell suppliers to double production next year.</p>\n<p>Despite the pandemic and the supply chain crisis, Tesla posted record deliveries during the quarter, thanks to sales of cheaper models including Model 3 sedans and Model Ys.</p>\n<p>The carmaker, led by billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, said revenue jumped to $11.96 billion from $6.04 billion a year earlier, when its California factory was shut down for more than six weeks due to local lockdown orders to fight the pandemic.</p>\n<p>Analysts had expected revenue of about $11.3 billion, according to IBES data from Refinitiv.</p>\n<p>Excluding items, Tesla posted a profit of $1.45 per share, easily topping analyst expectations for a profit of 98 cents per share.</p>\n<p>Tesla said operating income rose with volume growth and cost reduction, which offset higher supply chain costs, lower regulatory credit revenue and other items including $23 million in losses on investment in cryptocurrency bitcoin.</p>\n<p>Tesla’s profitability has often relied on selling regulatory credits to other automakers, but in the second quarter, Tesla was profitable without these credits for the first time since the end of 2019. Its GAAP net income was $1.14 billion in the second quarter. Revenue from the credits only totaled $354 million.</p>\n<p>“Tesla impressed with its numbers, as most of its revenue came from vehicle sales,” Jesse Cohen, senior analyst at Investing.com, said.</p>\n<p>Carmaker Stellantis expects to achieve its European carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions targets this year without environmental credits bought from Tesla.</p>\n<p>Tesla said it said it has delayed the launch of the Semi truck program to 2022 to focus on starting factories and due to limited availability of battery cells and other parts this year.</p>\n<p>But the company’s new 4680 batteries are not ready for volume production; executives said it was difficult to predict when technological challenges would be resolved.</p>\n<p>In an aside, Musk said he “most likely will not be on earnings calls” going forward to discuss financial results with investors and analysts. Tesla boosted its performance by cutting features it said were unused or unneeded and raising U.S. vehicle prices.\nShares of the world’s most valuable automaker rose 1.5% in extended trade.\nIn a call with investors and analysts, Tesla executives said that volume production growth will depend on parts availability, and Musk cautioned the shortage of semiconductors will continue.\n“The global chip shortage situation remains quite serious,” Musk said.\nStill, Musk said Tesla expects to launch production this year of the Model Y SUV at factories under construction in Texas and Germany. With the company's previous two quarterly earnings reports smashing street estimates, it's not really a surprise that expectations have continued to rise. With shares rallying in recent weeks to new all-time highs, another strong report will likely be needed to keep things going.</p>\n<p>For the first half of fiscal 2021, Apple's revenues have beaten street estimates by an average of $10.25 billion per quarter. The fiscal Q3&nbsp;current average estimate&nbsp;is $73.44 billion, which would represent growth of more than 23% from the year-ago period. It's quite impressive that the current average is up more than $13 billion over the past year. On the bottom line, the street is looking for $1.01, growth of more than 56%. In the table below, you can see some Q3 key financial items for the past two years, with the current estimates for this year's period in yellow. Revenues for the iPhone were up more than 65.5% over the prior-year period, with the Mac up more than 70% and iPad up nearly 79%. Fiscal Q2 overall revenue growth was nearly 54%, so this time around we're looking for about 40% of that figure. Don't forget, on the&nbsp;Q2 conference call, management talked about a $3 billion to $4 billion revenue hit in the June period from supply constraints.</p>\n<p>I'm most curious to see how the iPhone does this time around, as it appears that the 5G supercycle seems to be going pretty well. This year, however, most expectations are that the smartphone will return to its usual September launch period, meaning new phone revenues would be generated in fiscal Q4 again. Last year's coronavirus delayed launch meant sales didn't start until well into October and even November for some models, completely changing the sales trajectory for Apple's current fiscal year. This year's launch isn't expected to see a major upgrade to the phone line itself, so demand trends will probably be more dependent on how many consumers are upgrading to 5G rather than switching to iPhones.</p>\n<p>I'm sure analysts will also be looking to see how Apple has navigated the chip shortage as well as soaring commodity prices. I don't think we will see a repeat of the 575 basis point increase in product gross margins that Q2 saw this time around, but the iPhone 12 line should still provide a nice year-over-year boost. In the long run, investors will look at growing services margins helping the gross margin percentage overall, but don't forget that the services side of the business has a lot of its expenses on the operating line.</p>\n<p>For the stock to stay elevated, management is going to need to show that work from home and stimulus money tailwinds are still ongoing. As I discussed in&nbsp;a previous article, estimates call for Apple to see quarterly revenues decline for its March 2022 fiscal period, as the company laps very high previous year bars. While that might bring out some of the bears again, the long-term trajectory still seems positive. Current estimates call for $355 billion in total revenue during this fiscal year with Apple adding another $50 billion to that total over the next three years.</p>\n<p>I hope that management took advantage of the weakness in Apple shares during the quarter for its buyback. Even though the company is spending $20 billion or so every three months, that money doesn't go as far as $145 as it does at $125, obviously. Less shares repurchased means less of an earnings per share benefit, and lower long-term dividend raises. The good news is that Apple is on its way towards $100 billion a year in free cash flow, so investors don't need to worry about capital returns slowing down anytime soon.</p>\n<p>The major issue for Apple right now is valuation. Shares finished last week trading at 33.4 times their trailing twelve-month earnings. That's basically double the mid-teens numbers from a couple of years ago, helped a lot by easy-money policies around the globe. My current price target of $162 is based on a 30X multiple of $5.40 in EPS for the September 2022 period. That number, however, assumes that the Fed and other central banks will remain fairly accommodative through most of next year. If we start to get a lot of tapering and or rate hikes earlier than expected, the overall market is likely to feel some pain, and I don't see how Apple would be immune from that.</p>\n<p>A strong report from Apple could easily help shares to rise to a new all-time high. But just to play devil's advocate for a minute, what if there is a disappointment or a \"buy the rumor, sell the news\" reaction? Well, shares are quite a bit above their key moving averages as seen in the chart below (50-day in purple, 200-day in orange). As long as Apple can hold the shorter-term trend line, that rising technical level should be one of support. Assuming I'm right,&nbsp;<b>BioNTech</b> (NASDAQ:BNTX) should soar if the market crashes.</p>\n<p>A massive market sell-off due to COVID-19 worries would almost certainly light a fire beneath the stocks of the leading vaccine makers. My view is that BioNTech would be <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> of the biggest winners in the group.</p>\n<p>BioNTech and its partner <b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/PFE\">Pfizer</a></b> (NYSE:PFE) are already moving forward with plans to test a vaccine that specifically targets the delta variant. That gives the companies a head start. BioNTech is by far the smallest of the companies with COVID-19 vaccines already on the market, which makes its shares more likely to jump higher on a positive catalyst. It's also easily the cheapest of these vaccine stocks, based on forward earnings multiples.</p>\n<p>What if there isn't an imminent market crash? BioNTech is still set to rake in billions of dollars with sales of its COVID-19 vaccine. The company will almost certainly use its growing cash stockpile to invest in expanding its pipeline. I think that BioNTech will be a winner over the long term, regardless of what happens over the short term.</p>\n<h3><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/DG\">Dollar General</a></h3>\n<p>I've maintained for a long time that&nbsp;<b>Dollar <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/BGC\">General</a></b> (NYSE:DG) is one of the best stocks to own during a market downturn. That view seemed to be confirmed during the big market meltdown last year.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/b0e75aa27d2d22b4296c80687da5be97\" tg-width=\"720\" tg-height=\"449\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>DG data by YCharts.</p>\n<p>Shares of Dollar General fell at first, but not nearly as much as most stocks did. Dollar General stock also rebounded much more quickly and trounced the overall market's return throughout the rest of the year.</p>\n<p>During uncertain times, consumers tighten their purse strings. That makes discount retailers such as Dollar General more attractive than ever.</p>\n<p>Even when the overall market performs well, though, Dollar General should still be able to grow. As a case in point, the company's shares delivered more than double the gain that the <b>S&amp;P 500</b> index did in the five years leading up to 2020 when the market was roaring.</p>\n<p>I think that Dollar General will be able to continue to beat the market. It's moving forward with an aggressive expansion strategy. The company is also undertaking a major initiative to \"establish itself as a health destination.\" While Dollar General didn't provide many details on exactly what its plans are, moving more into healthcare sounds like a smart move to me.</p>\n<h3>Viatris</h3>\n<p>There are at least two reasons why a given stock might hold up well during a big market sell-off. One is that its underlying business isn't impacted much by the reason behind the broader plunge. Another is that the stock is so cheap that investors scoop up shares if it falls much below its existing price. My take is that&nbsp;<b>Viatris</b> (NASDAQ:VTRS) qualifies on both of these criteria.</p>\n<p>Viatris specializes in biosimilars and generic drugs. Patients need these drugs, regardless of what the stock market does. The drugs are also less expensive than branded prescription drugs.</p>\n<p>The stock is irrefutably dirt cheap. Viatris' shares trade at a little over four times expected earnings. It's unlikely that the stock is going to move much lower because it would simply be too much of a steal for investors to ignore.</p>\n<p>Granted, Viatris probably won't keep up with the overall stock market's performance if the current uptrend continues. However, the company's dividend is attractive. Unfortunately for investors, the transition has been in place for the better part of a decade. Those turnaround efforts include investments in cloud computing and artificial intelligence and the divestiture of legacy businesses. While there are now signs of green shoots, it is yet to be seen as to whether the seeds sown have fallen on rocky ground.</p>\n<p>Although the company has a rapidly growing business in hybrid cloud offerings, and a potential growth engine in quantum computing, it faces intense competition in the former industry and uncertain prospects in the latter. Most of the firm’s other businesses are in the doldrums, so IBM’s growth prospects are opaque.</p>\n<p>What is certain is that as of today, IBM has a reasonable and diminishing debt load and strong free cash flow.</p>\n<p>Management is attempting to address growth concerns in part by focusing on the firm’s cloud offerings, while it spins off its managed infrastructure business. That company will be named Kyndryl. However, the debt which the new entity will shoulder, along with the portion of the current dividend that it will carry, has not been divulged.</p>\n<p><b>Recent Quarterly Results</b></p>\n<p>IBM&nbsp;reported&nbsp;Q2 results last Monday. With non-GAAP EPS of $2.33, the company beat estimates by $0.04.</p>\n<p>Revenue of $18.7 billion was flat when adjusted for currency and divestitures.</p>\n<p>The negative side of the report had Systems revenue declining by 7%. However, this was largely due to the normal IBM Z mainframe cycle, down 13% year over year.</p>\n<p>The global financing division, which represents a low single digit percentage of overall revenues, was down 9%. Global technology services, which represents roughly a third of overall revenue and will largely be spun off as Kyndryl, had flattish growth.</p>\n<p>The positive side of the report had Cloud &amp; Cognitive Software cloud revenue up 29% and Global Business Services cloud revenue up 35%. Total cloud revenue of $27 billion increased by 15% over the last 12 months, while cloud revenue grew 13% in the quarter to $7.0 billion.</p>\n<p>Net cash from operating activities hit $17.7 billion, and adjusted free cash flow totaled $11 billion over the last 12 months.</p>\n<p>Since year-end 2020, the company has reduced debt by $6.4 billion.</p>\n<p>Management guides for adjusted free cash flow of $11 billion to $12 billion in 2021.</p>\n<p><b>Where IBM Stands Tall</b></p>\n<p>IBM is viewed by many as at best a third rate IT company and at worst as a dinosaur, headed towards extinction.</p>\n<p>It is evident that the company’s revenues have declined for years; however, to accurately assess the stock, investors must understand that IBM’s legacy businesses have many strengths.</p>\n<p>For example, IBM is the world’s largest IT services company and the dominant provider of mainframes. Among the Fortune 50 companies, 47 are IBM clients.</p>\n<p>Half of the world’s wireless connections are handled by the firm.</p>\n<p>IBM's mainframe systems process nearly 90% of the globe’s credit card transactions, and 97% of the world's largest banks rely on IBM products and services. Consequently, twenty-nine billion ATM transactions are processed annually using IBM systems.</p>\n<p>Eight out of 10 global retailers rely on IBM products and services while 80% of the travel industry's reservations run through IBM systems. That results in 4 billion flight reservations being processed using the company’s IT services.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/7ace4f1436fd2697c5ad266b5017e1dd\" tg-width=\"960\" tg-height=\"721\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Source: Forbes</span></p>\n<p>It is evident that IBM has a massive customer base that provides large scale recurring revenues. In many cases, moving to competitors' offerings would mean risking the transfer of sensitive information, a move many are not willing to take.</p>\n<p>However, with the transition to cloud services and open source software, there is an increased adoption by firms of mix and match IT infrastructures. In turn, this is eroding IBM’s competitive advantage associated with customer switching costs.</p>\n<p><b>The Sources Of Potential Growth</b></p>\n<p>Investors are generally aware of IBM's effort to drive growth through its hybrid cloud offerings. However, when questioned at JPMorgan’s recent investor conference, CFO Jim Kavanaugh&nbsp;provided insight&nbsp;into how hybrid cloud drives revenue in some of IBM’s other divisions.</p>\n<blockquote>\n For every $1 (in business) we land on a hybrid cloud platform, we see $3 to $5 of software drag and $6 to $8 of services drag overall.\n</blockquote>\n<p>Of course, Kavanaugh is using drag to refer to increased revenue in software and services associated with adoption of IBM’s hybrid cloud. Prescient And Strategic Intelligence&nbsp;forecasts&nbsp;a CAGR of 56% for the industry through 2030 with the quantum computer market share reaching nearly $65 billion.</p>\n<p>For additional insights regarding quantum computing and IBM’s position within that industry, I point you to&nbsp;my article, “IBM: Why My Eye Is Fixed On Big Blue.”</p>\n<p><b>Understanding Kyndryl</b></p>\n<p>Once&nbsp;Kyndryl&nbsp;is launched, it will have more than 90,000 employees and more than 4,600 customers in 115 countries. With a $60 billion services backlog, the new entity will begin with projected revenues of $19 billion. At twice the size of its closest competitor, the company will be the world’s largest managed infrastructure services provider.</p>\n<p>The split will&nbsp;transform&nbsp;IBM from a company that pulls half of its revenue from services to a firm with its software and solutions businesses generating over half of its revenue on a recurring basis.</p>\n<p>Global Business Services, which currently constitutes 22% of the company’s revenue, will&nbsp;account&nbsp;for over 40% of sales. Here it is important to note that the division grew revenue by 12% year over year in the last quarter.</p>\n<p>IBM will retain Red Hat and its solution provider business, the systems businesses, and its mission-critical public cloud service, and a software portfolio focused on big data, AI, and security.</p>\n<p>Initially, the two companies will each be the largest customer of the other.</p>\n<p>What remains to be known regarding the spinoff is how much debt each company will shoulder, and the share of the dividend that the companies will pay. Krishna stated the two companies will work together to sustain the current payout level.</p>\n<p><b>Has IBM Turned The Corner?</b></p>\n<p>Anyone who follows IBM knows the company has experienced an extended period of poor results. As previously noted, following the spinoff of Kyndryl, the two companies will team to provide a payout equivalent to the current dividend.</p>\n<p><b>Is IBM Stock Overvalued?</b></p>\n<p>IBM shares trade for $141.13. The average 12 month price target of 8 analysts is $153.50. The price target of the 3 analysts rating the stock since the last earnings report is $151.33.</p>\n<p>IBM has a P/E of 24.05x and a forward P/E of 17.67x. This compares to its five year averages of 16.42x and 13.25x respectively. It is well below the sector average which is in the low thirties for both metrics.</p>\n<p>The 3 to 5 year PEG provided by Seeking Alpha Premium is 1.16x. Schwab calculates a PEG of 1.49x, and Yahoo does not provide a PEG ratio.</p>\n<p>I believe the current P/E ratios for the stock reflect investors anticipating increased growth for IBM once the spinoff is complete. The PEG ratios show the stock is reasonably valued.</p>\n<p><b>Is IBM Stock A Good Long-Term Investment?</b></p>\n<p>IBM has an entrenched but evolving position among many of the largest companies on the globe. Unfortunately, the cloud, which is seen as the company’s primary avenue for growth, could also lead to a slow deterioration in some of the firm’s legacy businesses.</p>\n<p>That the cloud business has been growing at a rapid pace is manifest: IBM can now boast of over 3,200 clients using the firm’s hybrid cloud platform. That is nearly four times the number just prior to the Red Hat acquisition.</p>\n<p>If management’s claims are accurate, the hybrid cloud platform will create robust growth in the software and services division’s revenues. While there are now signs of green shoots, it is yet to be seen as to whether the seeds sown have fallen on rocky ground.\nAlthough the company has a rapidly growing business in hybrid cloud offerings, and a potential growth engine in quantum computing, it faces intense competition in the former industry and uncertain prospects in the latter. Most of the firm’s other businesses are in the doldrums, so IBM’s growth prospects are opaque.\nWhat is certain is that as of today, IBM has a reasonable and diminishing debt load and strong free cash flow.\nManagement is attempting to address growth concerns in part by focusing on the firm’s cloud offerings, while it spins off its managed infrastructure business. That company will be named Kyndryl. However, the debt which the new entity will shoulder, along with the portion of the current dividend that it will carry, has not been divulged.\nRecent Quarterly Results\nIBM reported Q2 results last Monday. With non-GAAP EPS of $2.33, the company beat estimates by $0.04.\nRevenue of $18.7 billion was flat when adjusted for currency and divestitures.\nThe negative side of the report had Systems revenue declining by 7%. However, this was largely due to the normal IBM Z mainframe cycle, down 13% year over year.\nThe global financing division, which represents a low single digit percentage of overall revenues, was down 9%. Global technology services, which represents roughly a third of overall revenue and will largely be spun off as Kyndryl, had flattish growth.\nThe positive side of the report had Cloud & Cognitive Software cloud revenue up 29% and Global Business Services cloud revenue up 35%. Total cloud revenue of $27 billion increased by 15% over the last 12 months, while cloud revenue grew 13% in the quarter to $7.0 billion.\nNet cash from operating activities hit $17.7 billion, and adjusted free cash flow totaled $11 billion over the last 12 months.\nSince year-end 2020, the company has reduced debt by $6.4 billion.\nManagement guides for adjusted free cash flow of $11 billion to $12 billion in 2021.\nWhere IBM Stands Tall\nIBM is viewed by many as at best a third rate IT company and at worst as a dinosaur, headed towards extinction.\nIt is evident that the company’s revenues have declined for years; however, to accurately assess the stock, investors must understand that IBM’s legacy businesses have many strengths.\nFor example, IBM is the world’s largest IT services company and the dominant provider of mainframes. Among the Fortune 50 companies, 47 are IBM clients.\nHalf of the world’s wireless connections are handled by the firm.\nIBM's mainframe systems process nearly 90% of the globe’s credit card transactions, and 97% of the world's largest banks rely on IBM products and services. Consequently, twenty-nine billion ATM transactions are processed annually using IBM systems.\nEight out of 10 global retailers rely on IBM products and services while 80% of the travel industry's reservations run through IBM systems. In many cases, moving to competitors' offerings would mean risking the transfer of sensitive information, a move many are not willing to take.\nHowever, with the transition to cloud services and open source software, there is an increased adoption by firms of mix and match IT infrastructures. In turn, this is eroding IBM’s competitive advantage associated with customer switching costs.\nThe Sources Of Potential Growth\nInvestors are generally aware of IBM's effort to drive growth through its hybrid cloud offerings. Koch helped invent the craft brew category, essentially taking the country back to pre-Prohibition days when the U.S. had hundreds of regional breweries making more flavorful beers for local tastes.</p>\n<p>Boston Beer stock did very well, but then it stalled during 2015-2017 as beer sales overall went flat. In response, Boston Beer helped put a new category on the map — with its Truly Hard Seltzer brand rolled out in 2106. It remains one of the leading hard seltzers.</p>\n<p>“We were drawn to the company because of its history of innovation,” says Ram, referring to her fund’s early position from the second quarter of 2016. “The stock was doing poorly because the beer market was flattening, but they were coming up with Truly Hard Seltzer. Truly was more successful than we anticipated. It created a new category.”</p>\n<p>This penchant for innovation at Boston Beer has helped keep Ram’s fund in the name. Other successful Boston Beer brands include Twisted Tea, Angry Orchard and Dogfish Head.</p>\n<p>A key takeaway here is that to find innovative companies, look for the ones led by people who have demonstrated a knack for innovation in the past. Innovative managers tend to keep on innovating. Boston Beer continually tests new seltzers, beers, hard ciders, distilled spirits and other drinks. Shareholders are betting they will come through again.</p>\n<p>They’ll need the help. Boston Beer shares fell 20% on July 23 because so many competitors entered the hard cider niche. Sales grew 33% but net income fell 1.6% as the company jacked up advertising costs to try to combat the competition. The company slashed estimates for the year on an expected slowdown in sales growth.</p>\n<p>But don’t count out this innovator yet.</p>\n<p>“We recently announced plans to develop new innovative beverages with&nbsp;Beam Suntory&nbsp;that we are planning to launch in early 2022,” Boston Beer’s Koch said. Beam Suntory&nbsp;sells Jim Beam whiskey and other brands of spirits. “We believe these new beverages will further demonstrate our ability to innovate and grow our business as drinker preferences evolve.”</p>\n<p><b>3. Look for companies that can create and dominate a niche</b></p>\n<p>For years as the gig economy emerged, the big credit card companies didn’t really care that much if the local yoga instructor could accept payments with a credit card. SquareSQrecognized this as an opportunity. So it launched its card payment device business in 2009. Since then, it has grown by taking on larger customers, and expanding into new lines of business in financial services such as cash management, debit cards loans and tax filing. Transaction-based revenue grew 27% in the first quarter, and subscription and services revenue soared 88%.</p>\n<p>This is a great example of a company that created a business niche. But it’s also a “land and expand” company because it grows by offering customers new services. Both qualities help companies maintain the competitive advantage Ram likes see in investments.</p>\n<p><b>4. Buy companies in the early stages of rapid growth</b></p>\n<p>One way to find these is to identify companies developing products that will transform an entire industry. Ram thinks that is the case with Alnylam PharmaceuticalsALNY.It’s developing novel therapies base on a technique called RNA interference (RNAi). Inside the body, messenger RNA (mRNA) encodes proteins we need, based on signals from RNA. Sometimes mRNA gets the signals crossed, and it encodes flawed proteins. This causes diseases.</p>\n<p>Alnylam has developed a way to tweak the RNAi pathway to silence the flawed signaling and block the creation of disease-causing proteins. So far, Alnylam has four approved RNAi-based medicines that treat rare hereditary diseases. The company has a dozen other therapies in clinical studies, including six in late-stage development.</p>\n<p>“This is a completely new area of therapeutics,” says Ram. “It is a platform of products that can treat a variety of conditions.”</p>\n<p><b>5. People have multiple reasons for selling, so it’s ridiculous to blame one event. That said, a big contributor to the decline was automatic, computer-generated selling. Once large market participants, especially algos, started selling, there was a mad rush out of the door. No one wanted to be the last one out, so retail traders and institutions sold in a panic, which got more intense as the day went on.</p>\n<p>Technical indicators contributed as well: The weekly relative strength indicator (RSI) has been remarkably accurate in warning of a market reversal. Once RSI goes over 70 and stays there, buyers beware.&nbsp; After the July 26 market close, the RSI of the S&amp;P 500SPX,-0.54%stood at 71.36 on the weekly chart — an extremely overbought reading. Does this mean that the index is going to plunge tomorrow? No one knows. But RSI is giving a clue that the U.S. market is in the danger zone.</p>\n<p><b>The bad news bears can’t catch a break</b></p>\n<p>Before the bears could say, “I told you so,” the next day, July 20, the 700-plus point Dow selloff was erased by a 550-point Dow rally. The bulls forgot about the selloff and returned to celebrating, and gulping glass after glass of their favorite drink, “bull-ade.” Once again, the storm passed, but this time a little fear creeped into the bulls’ psyche. Before, the only fear was the fear of missing out on the next rally. Now, many investors realize the market can actually go down.</p>\n<p><b>What to do now</b></p>\n<p>The next time the market plunges and you’re experiencing a variety of emotions, the following guide might help:</p>\n<p><b>1. If you’re panicked</b>: Don’t do something; sit there. Do not buy, do not sell, just sit tight. In fact, turn off the computer or other devices. Don’t fret over how much paper money you lost that day. Exercise, walk, run, swim, ride a bike. Your goal is to reduce emotions so you can get a good night’s sleep. When the market stabilizes, reevaluate what you own. Do not make any big financial decisions on days like this.</p>\n<p><b>2. If you’re afraid</b>: Take it easy. The selloff will end eventually. There is no reason to panic. Again, reevaluate what you own when the market comes to its senses.</p>\n<p><b>3. If you’re unaffected:</b>Still, check your portfolio to make sure you are properly diversified. While it’s find to not care if the market falls, be sure you are hedged for a worst-case scenario. One day there will be a bear market that will last months or years. Be prepared.</p>\n<p><b>What specific actions should you take?</b></p>\n<p>Now that you’ve taken care of your emotional health, there are other financial decisions you can make. Let’s take a look atsome strategies and tacticsthat may help:</p>\n<ol>\n <li>Sell if the stocks or indexes you own fall below their 200-day moving averages. Note: The major indexes such as the Standard &amp; Poor’s 500SPX,-0.54%have not fallen below (and stayed below) their 200-day averages for a decade. When they do eventually, that is a clear sell signal.</li>\n <li>Create a long-term investment plan and follow it no matter what happens in the short term.</li>\n <li>Dollar-cost average into index funds.</li>\n <li>Diversify. This is the key to success in the stock market and in life. If you own only stocks, consider bonds, but talk to a financial professional (not your neighbor) before taking this step.</li>\n <li>Buy the big dips. This strategy still works. If you had bought the dip on July 19, you would have cleaned up on July 20. One day this strategy won’t work, but that day hasn’t come yet.</li>\n <li>Sell covered-call options. This is still an excellent way to generate extra income. This strategy is also ideal for disposing of unwanted stocks, and getting paid for it.</li>\n</ol>\n<p><b>Plan for the next correction or bear market</b></p>\n<p>After a 13-year bull market, the clock is ticking for U.S. stocks. While the bulls scored another victory this time, one day the market won’t reverse direction and will begin a steep correction, or worse yet, a bear market. That’s when you will be glad that you have a plan and an investment script to follow on the worst days.</p>\n<p>Know what you own, sell to the “sleep-well” point and diversify into a variety of financial products including cash and bonds.
