him in the first all-civilian crew ever launched on a flight to Earth orbit.\nThe quartet of amateur space travellers, led by the American founder and chief executive of e-commerce firm Shift4 Payments Inc Jared Isaacman, lifted off at 8.03pm EDT (0003 GMT Thursday) from the Kennedy Space Centre in Cape Canaveral.\nA SpaceX webcast of the launch showed Isaacman, 38, and his crewmates – Sian Proctor, 51, Hayley Arceneaux, 29, and Chris Sembroski, 42 – strapped into the pressurised cabin of their gleaming white SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule, dubbed Resilience, wearing their helmeted In fact, they have trailed over 10 years by an average of 2.5% a year. Stinking that badly is a skill of its own—one that theoretically shouldn’t exist.</p>\n<p>Another explanation is that the S&amp;P 500’s popularity has created its own tailwind. “Flows into index funds raise the prices of large stocks,” conclude researchers from Michigan State University, the London School of Economics, and the University of California, Irvine,in a working paper&nbsp;that has been circulating since late last year. By now, you’ve heard that five companies&nbsp;—&nbsp;Apple,Microsoft,Alphabet,Amazon.com,and&nbsp;Facebook—combined for one-quarter of the S&amp;P 500’s market value. But all are still growing nicely, so why worry now?</p>\n<p>This past Tuesday, Lisa Shalett, chief investment officer at Morgan Stanley Wealth Management, predicted a 10% to 15% slide for the S&amp;P 500 before year’s end, but she says that doesn’t make her bearish. I tend to follow such forecasts more for the rationales than the targets. But long-term returns might be more closely linked than short-term ones to starting valuations, making forecasting more feasible. Remember that every past downturn has ended with the market hitting new highs. Second, have a game plan. Keep a watch list of stocks you plan to buy if prices plummet. More importantly, it will deliver 10 times the performance of today's fastest servers, helping clients tackle complex AI workloads.</p>\n<p>Here's the bottom line: Artificial intelligence is one of the most transformative technologies ever invented by the human race, and it will reshape the world in the years ahead. More to the point, Nvidia values the data center market at $100 billion&nbsp;by 2024. And as the industry leader, it's well positioned to capitalize on that opportunity. That's why this growth stock looks like a smart investment, especially if a market crash slashes the share price.</p>\n<p>2. Salesforce</p>\n<p>Salesforce specializes in customer relationship management. Its Customer 360 platform comprises a range of software designed to unify data across sales, services, marketing, and commerce, driving productivity by giving brands a complete view of each customer.</p>\n<p>The cloud platform also includes tools for AI-powered insights and visual analytics, as well as low-code software development and external data integration. In short, Salesforce is an end-to-end solution for CRM, helping clients handle every stage of the customer lifecycle.</p>\n<p>Recently, research firm <b>Gartner</b> recognized Salesforce as the CRM industry leader, suggesting that the company has a greater ability to execute and a more complete vision than any of its rivals. But that's OK! Short-term headwinds give long-term investors a chance to buy shares on sale. In other words, bear markets take place about once every six years. And on average, these downturns have lasted 390 days, with the index falling 36% from its high.\nHere's the good news: Over the same period, the typical bull market has run for 2,100 days, sending the index up 192%. Put another way, bull markets tend to erase all losses and then some. That's why market downturns are often a buying opportunity.\nSo how can you beat a market crash? First, don't panic sell. Remember that every past downturn has ended with the market hitting new highs. Second, have a game plan. Keep a watch list of stocks you plan to buy if prices plummet. This chip offloads networking tasks, freeing central processing units to run applications, which boosts data center performance and security.\nOf course, a new product is good for Nvidia's top line, but there's a bigger picture taking shape. As Nvidia's computing platform expands (i.e., one chip to two chips), the company can build more comprehensive solutions for its data center clients. More importantly, it will deliver 10 times the performance of today's fastest servers, helping clients tackle complex AI workloads.\nHere's the bottom line: Artificial intelligence is one of the most transformative technologies ever invented by the human race, and it will reshape the world in the years ahead. More to the point, Nvidia values the data center market at $100 billion by 2024. And as the industry leader, it's well positioned to capitalize on that opportunity. That's why this growth stock looks like a smart investment, especially if a market crash slashes the share price.\n2. Salesforce\nSalesforce specializes in customer relationship management. Its Customer 360 platform comprises a range of software designed to unify data across sales, services, marketing, and commerce, driving productivity by giving brands a complete view of each customer.\nThe cloud platform also includes tools for AI-powered insights and visual analytics, as well as low-code software development and external data integration. In short, Salesforce is an end-to-end solution for CRM, helping clients handle every stage of the customer lifecycle.\nRecently, research firm Gartner recognized Salesforce as the CRM industry leader, suggesting that the company has a greater ability to execute and a more complete vision than any of its rivals. By that measure, it is larger than Ford Motor Co., which was founded in 1903.</p>\n<p>That might make sense to you as an investor -- after all, Nio is an innovative company that sells only electric vehicles. Ford is a legacy auto maker that is working to catch up and eventually make a full transition to electric vehicles. Shares of Nio have more than tripled in the past year, while Ford's have almost doubled after cratering in the previous decade.</p>\n<p>So where does Nio <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/NIO\">$(NIO)$</a>, which reported second-quarter results after the stock market closes Wednesday, fit in an investment thesis? Below are screens showing how its stock valuation compares to vehicle production, and how that valuation relates to projected earnings through 2025.</p>\n<p><b>Doubling car production</b></p>\n<p>For the second quarter, Nio delivered 21,896 vehicles for a 112% increase from a year earlier. The growth is impressive, but the total number of vehicles sold is still relatively small.</p>\n<p>Here's a look at the 10 largest auto makers by market capitalization, along with their second-quarter sales or delivery numbers (whichever was higher, if both were reported) and additional color below the table:</p>\n<img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d9e9aed76c94544dbe44cde9f7c8bebc\" tg-width=\"931\" tg-height=\"761\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\">\n<table>\n <tbody>\n  <tr></tr>\n </tbody>\n</table>\n<p>You can see that those valuations are about the future, when innovators in the EV space -- Tesla Inc.&nbsp;and Nio, on this list -- may (or may not) become as large as legacy players.</p>\n<p>For now, Ford churns out mostly internal combustion engine&nbsp;vehicles at nearly 35 times the rate that Nio makes EVs.</p>\n<p>One thing to be aware of is that the legacy auto makers don't all report their unit sales the same way. Most don't break out electric vehicle sales.</p>\n<p>Among those that do, definitions vary. For example, Toyota Motor Corp. (7203.TO) reported that \"electrified vehicle\" sales made up 26.6% of total auto sales during the second quarter. But that category includes:</p>\n<p>For Toyota, BEV made up only 0.2% of second-quarter sales, while they accounted for 100% of sales for Nio and Tesla. Toyota's PHEV sales made up 1.4% of the total.</p>\n<p>Volkswagen AG reports electric-vehicle sales as including PHEV, which accounted for 6.7% of second-quarter sales, or BEV, which made up 4.4% of total sales. Those are impressive numbers: a combined 11.1%.</p>\n<p>For Bayerische Motoren Werke Aktiengesellschaft , better known as BWM Group, a second-quarter breakdown of electric-vehicle deliveries isn't yet available, but for the first half of 2021, 153,243 all-electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles were delivered, or 11.4% of total deliveries.</p>\n<p><b>Valuation to earnings estimates</b></p>\n<p>For companies at early stages, comparisons of price-to-earnings ratios may not mean very much. Such companies are focusing on growth rather than profits. An example of this has been Amazon.com Inc. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AMZN\">$(AMZN)$</a>, which has traded at a high P/E for decades as it has worked to expand into new lines of business, at the expense of the bottom line.</p>\n<p>A high P/E ratio can reflect investors' enthusiasm for innovation and in the case of EVs, a political consensus for transforming the industry. So Nio and Tesla trade at much higher P/E ratios than the legacy auto makers.</p>\n<p>Then again, very low P/E may show too much contempt among investors for the older manufacturers, as they use their cash flow from continuing massive sales of traditional vehicles to fund their development of EVs. Opportunities may be highlighted.</p>\n<p>Normally a forward P/E ratio is calculated by dividing the share price by a rolling consensus estimate of earnings per share for 12 months. This isn't available for all the companies listed here, so we're using consensus estimates for net income for calendar 2022.</p>\n<p>First, here are P/E ratios based on current market caps and consensus 2022 estimates among analysts polled by FactSet. To put the forward P/E valuations in perspective, the S&amp;P 500 Index trades for a weighted 20.5 times consensus 2022 EPS estimates.</p>\n<p><b>Valuation to sales</b></p>\n<table>\n <tbody>\n  <tr></tr>\n  <tr></tr>\n </tbody>\n</table>\n<p>Forward price-to-sales estimates might be more useful for early-stage companies that are showing low profits or net losses. Those are impressive numbers: a combined 11.1%.\nFor Bayerische Motoren Werke Aktiengesellschaft , better known as BWM Group, a second-quarter breakdown of electric-vehicle deliveries isn't yet available, but for the first half of 2021, 153,243 all-electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles were delivered, or 11.4% of total deliveries.\nValuation to earnings estimates\nFor companies at early stages, comparisons of price-to-earnings ratios may not mean very much. Such companies are focusing on growth rather than profits. An example of this has been Amazon.com Inc. $(AMZN)$, which has traded at a high P/E for decades as it has worked to expand into new lines of business, at the expense of the bottom line.\nA high P/E ratio can reflect investors' enthusiasm for innovation and in the case of EVs, a political consensus for transforming the industry. So Nio and Tesla trade at much higher P/E ratios than the legacy auto makers.\nThen again, very low P/E may show too much contempt among investors for the older manufacturers, as they use their cash flow from continuing massive sales of traditional vehicles to fund their development of EVs. Opportunities may be highlighted.\nNormally a forward P/E ratio is calculated by dividing the share price by a rolling consensus estimate of earnings per share for 12 months. The obverse of the famous advice from Richard Nixon’s attorney general, John Mitchell, is what economists and market participants will be doing on Wednesday, when the panel may elucidate its policy plans but is unlikely to take any immediate action.</p><p>To be sure, stock and bond markets have started 2022 by adjusting to the reality of a less accommodative Federal Reserve monetary policy ahead. The benchmark 10-year Treasury note’s yield is up 34 basis points since the turn of the year, at 1.836% on Thursday, while the Nasdaq Composite has entered a so-called 10% correction from its peak last November. And the federal-funds futures market has fully priced in an initial 25-basis-point increase in the Fed’s key policy rate, from the current ground-hugging 0% to 0.25%, at the March 15-16 FOMC gathering, according to the CME FedWatch site. (A basis point is 1/100th of a percentage point.)</p><p>But no rate increase is likely this week, despite a growing consensus (including from President Joe Biden) on the need for a less accommodative Fed policy, given the sharp rise of inflation. At his news conference on Wednesday, Biden expressed support for Fed Chairman Jerome Powell’s plan to “recalibrate” policy. “The critical job of making sure that the elevated prices don’t become entrenched rests with the Federal Reserve, which has a dual mandate: full employment and stable prices,” the president said.</p><p>That’s a sharp reversal of the pressure often exerted by past presidents for easier money. From Lyndon B. Johnson to Nixon and Donald Trump, presidents have variously tried to cajole or coerce Fed chairmen into lower interest rates or avoid raising them, while George H.W. Bush blamed a too-tight Fed for his electoral defeat. But now, inflation’s surge to 7% tops the list of concerns in consumer surveys, coinciding with the slide in Biden’s poll ratings, so his endorsement of a less accommodative Fed policy appears to be a matter of political necessity.</p><p>So acute have inflation concerns become that some observers are urging more immediate and dramatic actions. That includes calls for a 50-basis-point jump in the fed-funds rate, as I wrote this past week on Barrons.com, or a complete halt in the Fed’s securities purchases, as I noted here a week ago, rather than the present path of winding down its buying by March.</p><p>But both would be out of character for the Powell Fed. “I can’t imagine another big pivot,” says John Ryding, chief economic advisor at Brean Capital. For most of 2021, the monetary authorities clung to the notion of “transitory” inflation. A sharp, initial 50-basis-point hike would be an admission of how they misjudged the building price pressures, he says.</p><p>Neither does Ryding look for the Fed to emulate the Bank of Canada, which abruptly ended its securities purchases last year. “What I hope to get is clarity” from the FOMC meeting in the coming week, he added in a telephone interview.</p><p>One possible surprise would be for the FOMC to further accelerate the tapering of the purchases, winding them up by mid-February, a month earlier than currently scheduled, write Nomura economists Aichi Amemiya, Robert Dent, and Kenny Lee in a client note. That would represent a marginal reduction of $20 billion in Treasury and $10 billion in agency mortgage-backed securities acquisitions, but would send a signal to the market about the Fed’s anti-inflation resolve.</p><p>In particular, they add, a quicker windup in the Fed’s bond buying might help avoid some awkward questions for Powell at his postmeeting news conference on Wednesday afternoon. The central bank continues to buy $40 billion of Treasuries and $20 billion a month in MBS, adding to its near-$9-trillion balance sheet, which means that it is actually easing, rather than tightening, policy, while talking of the need to curb inflation.</p><p>As for the Fed beginning to normalize its balance sheet, the Nomura economists think the announcement could come as early as the March or May FOMC meeting. Most Fed watchers expect a later start to the process of reducing the central bank’s securities holdings, after two or more rate hikes. And almost all think the Fed will allow maturing issues to run off at a predictable pace, rather than sell securities outright.</p><p>Some also suggest that the Fed could reduce its holdings of mortgage-backed securities more rapidly. The Fed has expressed a preference to returning to holding only Treasuries on its balance sheet, as was the case before the 2007-09 financial crisis, Ryding notes. And for months, many critics have argued that effectively subsidizing an already overheated housing market by buying MBS makes no sense.</p><p>But the relative economic and financial impact of changes in these two main monetary policy tools—interest rates and the central bank’s asset holdings—is unknown, he says. The Fed traditionally has utilized the fed-funds rate as its main policy lever and resorted to a huge expansion in its balance sheet when its key policy rate fell to the zero lower bound. Unlike other central banks, notably the European Central Bank and the Bank of Japan, the Fed has avoided resorting to negative interest rates.</p><p>Economists Cynthia Wu of Notre Dame and Fan Dora Xia of the Bank for International Settlements have estimated that the equivalent impact of the Fed’s asset purchases in what they dub a “shadow fed-funds rate,” which is tracked by the Atlanta Fed. The Wu-Xia shadow funds rate was minus 1.15% as of Dec. 31, according to the Atlanta Fed.</p><p>Ryding says Wu estimates that a change in the Fed’s balance sheet equal to 10% of U.S. gross domestic product—about $2 trillion—is roughly equivalent to a 100 basis point change in the fed-funds rate.</p><p>How central bank bond-buying affects the economy is still debated among economists. Most see asset purchases working through what they call the portfolio channel. As former Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke explained in a Washington Post op-ed article in November 2010, the central bank buys securities to ease financial conditions, including to raise stock prices, which in turn boosts consumers’ wealth and confidence, and spurs spending.</p><p>And as the intriguing accompanying charts from Deutsche Bank’s head of thematic research Jim Reid illustrate, the big global tech growth stocks have moved in lockstep with the assets of the major central banks. The FANG+ group used in the chart consists of Meta Platforms (the former Facebook, ticker: FB), Amazon.com (AMZN), Apple (AAPL), and Google parent Alphabet (GOOGL), plus Alibaba Group Holding (BABA), Baidu (BIDU), Nvidia (NVDA), Tesla (TSLA), and Twitter (TWTR). The big five central banks are the Fed, the ECB, the People’s Bank of China, the BoJ, and the Bank of England.</p><p>“Correlation does not imply causation, but unless you are an incredibly strong advocate of a completely new earnings paradigm for the largest technology companies that coincidently have tracked unconventional monetary policy, then it is hard to argue against the notion that central bank policies have been a big contributor to an incredible run for the sector over the last six-to-seven years. Indeed, the only notable setback has been when global [quantitative tightening] arrived in 2018,” Reid observes in a client note.</p><p>The 13% decline in the FANG+ index from its November peak through Thursday is a bit steeper than the 11.5% drop in the popular Invesco QQQ exchange-traded fund (QQQ) that tracks the biggest Nasdaq nonfinancial stocks. And that’s before the Fed actually has begun to shrink its balance sheet.</p><p>The Fed has maintained its crisis policy of zero interest rates and active bond buying, initiated in March 2020 during the near-meltdown of markets resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic. The virus and its variants persist, but the economy has largely recovered, with the unemployment rate under 4% and the labor market beset by worker shortages. Inflation, meanwhile, has soared to 7% from a combination of supply constraints and pumped-up demand.</p><p>And nowhere is the impact of Fed policy more apparent than in asset prices, from the doubling of the S&amp;P 500 since its March 2020 bottom, to home prices jumping about 20%. The benchmark 10-year Treasury note’s yield is up 34 basis points since the turn of the year, at 1.836% on Thursday, while the Nasdaq Composite has entered a so-called 10% correction from its peak last November. And the federal-funds futures market has fully priced in an initial 25-basis-point increase in the Fed’s key policy rate, from the current ground-hugging 0% to 0.25%, at the March 15-16 FOMC gathering, according to the CME FedWatch site. (A basis point is 1/100th of a percentage point.)But no rate increase is likely this week, despite a growing consensus (including from President Joe Biden) on the need for a less accommodative Fed policy, given the sharp rise of inflation. At his news conference on Wednesday, Biden expressed support for Fed Chairman Jerome Powell’s plan to “recalibrate” policy. “The critical job of making sure that the elevated prices don’t become entrenched rests with the Federal Reserve, which has a dual mandate: full employment and stable prices,” the president said.That’s a sharp reversal of the pressure often exerted by past presidents for easier money. From Lyndon B. Johnson to Nixon and Donald Trump, presidents have variously tried to cajole or coerce Fed chairmen into lower interest rates or avoid raising them, while George H.W. Bush blamed a too-tight Fed for his electoral defeat. But now, inflation’s surge to 7% tops the list of concerns in consumer surveys, coinciding with the slide in Biden’s poll ratings, so his endorsement of a less accommodative Fed policy appears to be a matter of political necessity.So acute have inflation concerns become that some observers are urging more immediate and dramatic actions. That includes calls for a 50-basis-point jump in the fed-funds rate, as I wrote this past week on Barrons.com, or a complete halt in the Fed’s securities purchases, as I noted here a week ago, rather than the present path of winding down its buying by March.But both would be out of character for the Powell Fed. “I can’t imagine another big pivot,” says John Ryding, chief economic advisor at Brean Capital. For most of 2021, the monetary authorities clung to the notion of “transitory” inflation. A sharp, initial 50-basis-point hike would be an admission of how they misjudged the building price pressures, he says.Neither does Ryding look for the Fed to emulate the Bank of Canada, which abruptly ended its securities purchases last year. “What I hope to get is clarity” from the FOMC meeting in the coming week, he added in a telephone interview.One possible surprise would be for the FOMC to further accelerate the tapering of the purchases, winding them up by mid-February, a month earlier than currently scheduled, write Nomura economists Aichi Amemiya, Robert Dent, and Kenny Lee in a client note. Roughly speaking, it’s the gap between the rates of growth in money supply and gross domestic product, an indicator known to eco-geeks as Marshallian K. It just turned negative for the first time since 2018, meaning GDP is rising faster than the government’s M2 account.</p>\n<p>The shortfall comes from an expanding economy that’s quickly depleting the nation’s available money. The deficit could become a problem for markets at a time when excess liquidity is seen as underpinning rallies in everything from Bitcoin to meme stocks.</p>\n<p>“Put another way, the recovering economy is now drinking from a punch bowl that the stock market once had all to itself,” Doug Ramsey, Leuthold Group’s chief investment officer, wrote in a note last week.</p>\n<p>How big a threat is this? While stocks kept rising during frequent negative Marshallian K readings in the 1990s, the pattern since the 2008 global financial crisis -- a period when the central bank was in what Ramsey calls a “perpetual crisis mode” -- begs for caution.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/29bd13488ad9f3e748da28092473f23e\" tg-width=\"930\" tg-height=\"523\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>The Marshallian K fell below zero in 2010, a year when the S&amp;P 500 Index suffered a 16% correction. A similar dip in 2018 portended a selloff that almost killed that bull market.</p>\n<p>The Leuthold study is the latest attempt to handicap the market’s outlook from the perspective of liquidity. But not everyone is worried. Ed Yardeni, the president and founder of Yardeni Research Inc., says he prefers to plot not the growth rates but the absolute level of M2 against GDP to measure liquidity. Based on that, liquidity stood near a record high.</p>\n<p>“Some people start to freak out about the M2 growth rate,” he said in an interview on Bloomberg TV and Radio. “What they don’t really appreciate is M2 today is $5 trillion higher than it was before the pandemic. There is just a tremendous liquidity sitting there.”</p>\n<p>Others see limited impact from Fed tapering on the equity market. In June,researchfrom UBS Group AG showed that should the Fed turn off the spigot on its annual $1.4 trillion in quantitative-easing spending, the hit to the S&amp;P 500 would be a paltry 3% decline in prices.</p>\n<p>In 2013, when the Fed’s announcement on a reduction in stimulus sparked ataper tantrumthat sent 10-year Treasury yields skyward, the S&amp;P 500 pulled back almost 6% from its May peak that year. But stocks staged a full recovery within weeks and went on with a rally that eventually lifted the index 30% for the whole year.</p>\n<p>Skeptics, however, are quick to point out one big difference: equity valuations.</p>\n<p>“Back then, the stock market was trading at 15 times earnings. Now it’s 22 times earnings,” Matt Maley, chief market strategist for Miller Tabak + Co., said in an interview on Bloomberg TV with Caroline Hyde. “It will be hard for the market to ignore it this time around.”</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/37c0e312361e509a3fc0e8bfb3d9c649\" tg-width=\"930\" tg-height=\"523\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"></p>\n<p>For now, a liquidity drain suggested by the Marshallian K data has done little damage to the market, at least on the index level. The S&amp;P 500 is poised for a seventh straight monthly gain, reaching all-time highs almost every week.</p>\n<p>But Ramsey warns investors shouldn’t let their guard down. While the broad market has been strong -- the S&amp;P 500 closed Wednesday at a record for the 46th time this year -- fewer stocks are participating in the latest leg up. This could be blamed on falling liquidity, he says, and the days of abundant cash floating all stocks are likely gone.</p>\n<p>The Marshallian K indicator just slumped intonegative territoryfaster than ever. During the second quarter, M2 money expanded 12.7% from a year ago, trailing the nominal GDP growth rate of 16.7%. That came after four quarters of excessive liquidity where the spread stayed above 20 percentage points.</p>\n<p>“The Marshallian K now shows liquidity not only deteriorating but actually contracting -- and at a time when hopes (as embedded in valuations) have never been higher,” Ramsey said. “If the Fed can drawdown QE in the next year without triggering a decline of those levels, it will truly have achieved something remarkable. Roughly speaking, it’s the gap between the rates of growth in money supply and gross domestic product, an indicator known to eco-geeks as Marshallian K. It just turned negative for the first time since 2018, meaning GDP is rising faster than the government’s M2 account.\nThe shortfall comes from an expanding economy that’s quickly depleting the nation’s available money. The deficit could become a problem for markets at a time when excess liquidity is seen as underpinning rallies in everything from Bitcoin to meme stocks.\n“Put another way, the recovering economy is now drinking from a punch bowl that the stock market once had all to itself,” Doug Ramsey, Leuthold Group’s chief investment officer, wrote in a note last week.\nHow big a threat is this? While stocks kept rising during frequent negative Marshallian K readings in the 1990s, the pattern since the 2008 global financial crisis -- a period when the central bank was in what Ramsey calls a “perpetual crisis mode” -- begs for caution.\n\nThe Marshallian K fell below zero in 2010, a year when the S&P 500 Index suffered a 16% correction. A similar dip in 2018 portended a selloff that almost killed that bull market.\nThe Leuthold study is the latest attempt to handicap the market’s outlook from the perspective of liquidity. But not everyone is worried. Ed Yardeni, the president and founder of Yardeni Research Inc., says he prefers to plot not the growth rates but the absolute level of M2 against GDP to measure liquidity. Based on that, liquidity stood near a record high.\n“Some people start to freak out about the M2 growth rate,” he said in an interview on Bloomberg TV and Radio. “What they don’t really appreciate is M2 today is $5 trillion higher than it was before the pandemic. There is just a tremendous liquidity sitting there.”\nOthers see limited impact from Fed tapering on the equity market. Both events have only occurred 7 times before in stock market history. Above all, all purchases or sales will impact your future wealth accumulation in the market.</p>\n<p>However, during extreme rallies like today it is twice as important to reflect on your investment decisions. Ask that to investors who took high risks during the dot-com bubble or panic sold during the Covid-19 crash. That undoubtedly had an immense impact on their long-term returns.</p>\n<p>The importance of investment decisions today for your long-term returns is why I chose to write about my three golden rules on how to invest at all-time highs. How should you approach today's market and what should you be aware of? Should you sell out at these overvalued prices and wait for a correction to take place or can you still generate great returns when buying at these levels? The answers to these one-million-dollar questions will be provided in this article.</p>\n<p><b>1. Don't get caught by greediness</b></p>\n<p>Let's start off with the most important rule. Avoid greediness.</p>\n<p>According to JPMorgan, over the past 20 years, the average investor reached an annual return of only 2.9%. As such, they significantly underperformed the general market as the S&amp;P 500 yielded an annual 7.5% return during this time frame.</p>\n<p>The single most important reason for this retail investor underperformance? Emotional human behavior.</p>\n<p>The average investor is getting influenced heavily by media headlines, stock prices movements and behavior from other investors.</p>\n<p>Today, we reached an extremely bullish stock market environment. Last earnings season has been one of the greatest in stock market history. The S&amp;P 500 EPS rose by 94.5% YoY and 86.1% of its constituents beat analyst estimates.</p>\n<p>As a consequence of this bullish environment, analysts are significantly raising their estimates for the next quarters. They now expect EPS to rise sharply to $217.96 by the end of 2022, which is a significant recovery from the pre-pandemic high of $157.12. Such a recovery looks to be optimistic as it took 7-12 years in the past economic cycles to achieve this:</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1accc921d16b11ec13ed94686b9cfe75\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"465\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Source: Insider Opportunities based on S&amp;P Global data; adjusted EPS is used</span></p>\n<p>Will earnings really continue this very strong recovery over the coming quarters or are analysts perhaps getting too greedy with their assumptions?</p>\n<p>It wouldn't be the first time if they were too greedy. During the dot-com bubble for example, they were caught by their emotions as well. The '90s was an abnormally strong decade in terms of earnings growth for the S&amp;P 500. As such, analysts totally forgot that downward cycles exist as well. They increased their annual EPS growth guidance to a staggering 15% for the five years following 2000. According to them, this high growth rate justified the record P/E multiples stocks were trading at and many investors got tricked into that story.</p>\n<p>What happened afterwards? The economy didn't boom, it fell into a recession which took 3 years to recover from. Earnings in 2003 were almost 50% lower than what analysts had been predicting in 2000.</p>\n<p>As markets were priced to analyst expectations instead of taking into account a possible downturn, the S&amp;P 500 crashed and took 7 years to recover.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/0081f4a9c3ee43b20684f113cb04ef9c\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"467\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Source: Insider Opportunities based on S&amp;P Global data and Yardeni; adjusted EPS is used</span></p>\n<p>Let's get back to today... The P/E of the S&amp;P 500 currently stands at 25.4x, which is extremely high compared to historical levels. This gets justified by the common belief that earnings will continue rising significantly. As such, the ratio would fall to an acceptable 20.7x by the end of 2022.</p>\n<p>Now ask yourself how likely it is that earnings growth will continue to grow at higher levels than the historical average over the coming quarters.</p>\n<p>Interest rates are already at 0%. The money printer is running out of paper. Federal debt levels are hitting their ceilings. Pent-up demand and stimuli cheques already led to record-high consumer spending over the past quarters.</p>\n<p>Maybe, just maybe, analysts are being too greedy with their assumptions? Maybe the recent economic recovery is unsustainable and set to cool down? Maybe my assumptions (grey line) are much more likely than what the market is predicting (red line)? If so, the market is trading at a fwd 2022 P/E of 23.6x, which is really expensive.</p>\n<p>I'm not sure this will happen, nobody is. But it sure as hell is a probability.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/f61310c3c851b181ceb1fb3cc8862fdb\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"465\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Source: Insider Opportunities based on S&amp;P Global data and Yardeni; adjusted EPS is used</span></p>\n<p>This greediness also gets reflected in the charts. As you can see in the chart below, a bull market can be split into four cycles. Strong growth, bear trap, media attention and greed.</p>\n<p>Interestingly, the 2013-2021 bull market is playing out almost identically as the 1994-2000 bull market. At this moment, the Nasdaq Index (QQQ) looks to be ready to start the last extreme greed phase. The media is approaching the recent rally as \"the new normal\" and investors are FOMO buying heavily because stocks \"can only go up\". As such, it is likely that the Nasdaq will rise close to $20,000 in the last months of 2021.</p>\n<p>As a long-term investor, it is extremely important to understand these dynamics. You will probably feel the urge to go all-in in risky assets as well. However, getting greedy during this phase could be a major threat for your long term returns as it will likely be followed by a major bear market.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/c783bf0cff4c410846a27c2dc8c180b1\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"499\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Source: Insider Opportunities with Tradingview</span></p>\n<p>Human behavior makes it extremely challenging to not get distracted by market sentiment. If you can keep an objective view on markets, it will benefit your returns drastically.</p>\n<p>2. Keep investing, there are always opportunities</p>\n<p>In short, rule #1 says that your decisions should never be led by emotions and that you should keep focusing on underlying fundamentals. As the market is getting greedy today and valuations reach extreme levels it implies that you should start selling stocks and hold a lot of cash, right?</p>\n<p>Not really... You know, a wise man once said the following:</p>\n<blockquote>\n <b>It's a market of stocks, not a stock market.</b>\n</blockquote>\n<p>I'm not entirely sure who came up with it. But it must be a wise man, for sure.</p>\n<p>What does it mean? Look, many retail investors buy/sell stocks based on how the outlook for the general market looks like. If they don't trust the markets, they will be reluctant to invest, no matter what.</p>\n<p>That's not a great way of looking at markets. There are almost 4,000 stocks available and there will always be interesting investment opportunities to generate great returns, no matter how the market evolves.</p>\n<p>In a generally overvalued market it gets increasingly challenging to find undervalued stocks, but certainly not impossible. Ask Warren Buffett. In 2000, the most overvalued stock market in history, his investment vehicle Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.A) (BRK.B) kept buying high-quality, undervalued assets. His dedication paid off with an impressive return of 47% five years after the dot-com peak compared to -39% for the Nasdaq index.</p>\n<p>The Russell 2000 (IWM), an index reflecting US small caps, was very attractive during the dot-com bubble as well, trading at a P/E of 16x (vs 24x for large caps) going into 2000. Those who invested in this undervalued asset class during the bubble also generated very solid returns. Those who were able to pick out the greatest small caps were a lot happier than those who got tricked into overhyped tech stocks, I can imagine.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/c713a296e819a255b3be8ac6e504033d\" tg-width=\"635\" tg-height=\"450\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Data by YCharts</span></p>\n<p>So what should you do today? I would suggest re-evaluating all your portfolio holdings. Weigh their valuation compared to earnings 3 years from now, when Covid-19 disruptions (stimuli, pent-up demand, etc.) are gone. Be conservative with your assumptions. If a stock is significantly overvalued compared to those assumptions, don't be greedy and sell out the position.</p>\n<p>A great example is Apple Inc. (AAPL), one of the most popular stocks this year. As a consequence of its very strong financials (revenue grew 36.4% last quarter), its P/E ratio more than doubled over the past two years to 30x. It is important to understand that its recent growth primarily accelerated due to unsustainable drivers such as the several rounds of stimuli cheques. Once this fades away, Apple's growth is likely to fall back to single digits (or might even go negative in the short term) and returns would be very weak going forward.</p>\n<p>Don't keep all that freed up capital in cash, especially in the current inflationary environment. There are still opportunities to re-invest that money. In my opinion, small caps are the most attractive asset class today just like they were in 2000. After its recent underperformance, the Russell 2000 (representing all US small caps) is trading at a P/E of 15.6x today. This is much lower than both the S&amp;P 500 Index and its historical average. There are plenty of small-cap opportunities out there which will generate great returns going forward.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/2f132a93975b3b7fef86aff21c0b49bb\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"250\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Source: Yardeni</span></p>\n<p><b>3. Adopt a proven investment strategy to pick stocks</b></p>\n<p>Rule #1 and #2 look very good on paper, but are very hard to execute in reality. When push comes to shove, it's very tough to deny your emotions and to find interesting investment opportunities in an overvalued market.</p>\n<p>That's where #3 comes into play: adopt a proven investment strategy.</p>\n<p>With the upcoming challenges in the stock market, I believe it has never been as important as today to follow a pre-determined strategy on which you can rely during a highly uncertain market environment. If you use a strategy which worked well in the past, you'll feel great in each market environment.</p>\n<p>There are many strategies that could work for you, as long as you stick to it. As you can see in the chart below, a bull market can be split into four cycles.
