Inflation. The Fed tapering its stimulus. The mess in Afgh","content":"
New York (CNN Business)The Delta variant. Inflation. The Fed tapering its stimulus. The mess in Afghanistan. There are a lot of things for investors to be nervous about these days.
\n
It shouldn't come as a huge surprise that the CNN Business Fear & Greed Index, which measures seven gauges of investor sentiment, is showing signs of Fear in the market. It actually was an Extreme Fear territory Friday.
\n
Still, stocks remain near all-time highs. The S&P 500 was rallying for the third-straight day Monday and is now up nearly 20% in 2021. What gives?
\n
Another powerful fear factor is lifting stocks: The fear of missing out on this seemingly never-ending rally.
\n
Corporate earnings for the second quarter were exceedingly strong. Although profit growth is expected to cool a bit in the second half of the year and in 2022, earnings increases are still likely to be fairly solid for the foreseeable future.
\n
Investors also have little choice but to keep buying stocks because other assets simply don't seem attractive.
\n
Bond yields have risen modestly as of late but the yield on the 10-year US Treasury is still hovering around 1.27%. They were around 1.8% at the start of 2020 before the pandemic shut down the US economy, Conservative investors, therefore, need to search elsewhere for higher yields.
\n
\"There are ridiculously low yields on bonds. How do retirees and pension funds manage that?\" said Eric Diton, president and managing director of The Wealth Alliance in an interview with CNN Business. \"They have to shift to stocks. Inflation. The Fed tapering its stimulus. The mess in Afghanistan. There are a lot of things for investors to be nervous about these days.\nIt shouldn't come as a huge surprise that the CNN Business Fear & Greed Index, which measures seven gauges of investor sentiment, is showing signs of Fear in the market. It actually was an Extreme Fear territory Friday.\nStill, stocks remain near all-time highs. The S&P 500 was rallying for the third-straight day Monday and is now up nearly 20% in 2021. What gives?\nAnother powerful fear factor is lifting stocks: The fear of missing out on this seemingly never-ending rally.\nCorporate earnings for the second quarter were exceedingly strong. Although profit growth is expected to cool a bit in the second half of the year and in 2022, earnings increases are still likely to be fairly solid for the foreseeable future.\nInvestors also have little choice but to keep buying stocks because other assets simply don't seem attractive.\nBond yields have risen modestly as of late but the yield on the 10-year US Treasury is still hovering around 1.27%. They were around 1.8% at the start of 2020 before the pandemic shut down the US economy, Conservative investors, therefore, need to search elsewhere for higher yields.\n\"There are ridiculously low yields on bonds. How do retirees and pension funds manage that?\" said Eric Diton, president and managing director of The Wealth Alliance in an interview with CNN Business. \"They have to shift to stocks. I'd rather own big dividend payers like Pfizer or Verizon.\"\nPfizer (PFE) pays a dividend that yields 3.2% while Verizon's (VZ) dividend yields 4.5%.\nGold prices have fallen in 2021 as investors bet on the Fed beginning to taper its asset purchase plan later this year or early next year and possibly raise rates as soon as late 2022.\nFed not likely to upset the markets that much anytime soon\nBut there is no guarantee that the Fed is going to hastily make changes to policy.\nQuestions about whether more stimulus will be coming from Washington and concerns about how quickly Congress will act to raise the debt ceiling that allows the government to borrow more money could keep the Fed on the sidelines for even longer, which should also support stocks.\n\"The Fed would prefer to know the stance of fiscal policy before committing to a direction for monetary policy,\" said David Kelly, chief global strategist with JPMorgan Funds, in a report Monday.\n\"The longer negotiations continue, the greater is the risk that something goes wrong with the political calculus and the Fed would prefer to be past this uncertainty before commencing tightening,\" Kelly added.\nThe research team at Principal Global Investors argues that the Fed will likely remain on hold until the beginning of next year too.\n\"Investors shouldn't expect the Federal Reserve to alter their plans to begin easing policy, and we reiterate the view that the Fed will likely begin tapering in early 2022,\" the Principal analysts wrote in a report Monday.\nThey added that \"investors shouldn't worry that runaway inflation will derail the positive trajectory\" for riskier assets like tech stocks and other high-growth sectors.\nDelta variant likely won't cause repeat of 2020 shutdown\nSeveral strategists aren't terribly concerned about the Delta variant having a major impact on the economy or earnings either. When OPEC embargoed the U.S. in the 1970s, the price of crude rose from about $3 a barrel at the beginning of the decade to $13 a barrel by its end. The U.S. even issued gas ration coupons in 1974.
\n
The spike was good news for Chevron and Exxon Mobil, which returned roughly 100% and 70%, respectively, in the 1970s, but painful for everyone else, as inflation raged. The S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average rose just 17% and 5%, respectively, over the decade.
\n
If oil was the necessary component for the 1970s economy, chips provide the same function in the 2020s. They power everything from our computers and phones to our cars and appliances. And, as everyone knows by now, there is a shortage, with delivery times growing to more than 20 weeks, per Susquehanna Financial Group data.
\n
Roughly 80% of all the chips in the world are made in Northeast Asia. Politicians realize how big a problem this is, and they have started to demand local manufacturing, with President Joe Biden introducing a plan for $50 billion in chip research earlier this year. Reshoring any industry, including semiconductors, is a yearslong process that requires billions in capital. There will be winners and losers. And if it goes on too long, it will filter into the prices of all kinds of goods.
\n
“Shortages related to rapid upswings in demand could become inflationary,” TS Lombard’s Rory Green and Steven Blitz wrote back in January, when the scarcity of chips—”a product more known for steadily declining prices”—was in its infancy.
\n
The global semiconductor shortage has been a particular thorn in the side of the automotive industry all year. It was supposed to resolve itself by the second half of 2021. But more production cuts announced by Toyota this past week shows the problem isn’t going away soon. In fact, RBC analyst Joseph Spak argues the shortage could last for years.
\n
Part of the problem is structural, Spak says. Electric vehicles need more computing power, but the auto industry typically relies on older-generation chip technology, where capacity isn’t being as readily added by chip makers. Instead, they prefer to focus on newer, higher-end chips for the consumer electronics industry.
\n
The result: Instead of lines at the gas stations, there are lines at the automotive dealerships. Low new- and used-car inventories have pushed up pricing and contributed to rising inflation. Used-car prices rose about 20% in the first half of 2021, while new-car prices rose about 3%. The rise in used-car prices has started to slow, but new-car price gains are accelerating, rising about 7% year over year in July.
\n
That’s not good for consumers, but auto makers stand to benefit. Constrained production will lead to persistently low inventories and higher pricing. Companies will sell fewer cars, but that’s been offset by higher prices. Ford and General Motors shares are up 43% and 17%, respectively, in 2021, and both still trade for about seven times 2022 earnings.
\n
And that’s just the auto industry. The longer the chip shortage goes on, the more prices will rise in all types of products. That will benefit chip makers such as Intel and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing. Wall Street sees upside in the latter. Some two-thirds of analysts covering the stock rate it Buy, and the average price target implies about a 33% upside.
\n
Don’t expect long lines outside RadioShack, but expect the chip shortage to be felt just the same.
","source":"lsy1601382232898","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
The Chip Shortage Looks Like the Oil Shortage of the 1970s. The global benchmark price climbed above $70 a barrel on Tuesday, adding to big gains on Monday.
\n
Some positive news about countries containing Covid-19, and increasing confidence in the supply-demand picture appear to be keeping prices aloft. Oil stocks were rising, too, though most are still down sharply over the past month.Exxon Mobil(ticker: XOM) rose 0.8%.Whiting Petroleum(WLL), a smaller company that tends to move more with oil prices, was up 1.4%, but is off 14% over the past month.
\n
Hopes for $100 oil this year are probably gone, but there are signs of momentum behind the rebound.
\n
Oil had fallen for seven trading days in a row through Friday, the longest losing streak since 2018 for Brent crude, the international benchmark, and since 2019 for West Texas Intermediate, the U.S. benchmark. Brent lost 8.8% during the streak, and WTI dropped 10%.
\n
On Monday, oil regained much of the value it lost, with Brent rising 5.5% and WTI up 5.6%. That rally extended on Tuesday, as Brent futures rose 2.4%, to $70.38, and WTI rose 2.2%.
\n
For much of the past year, oil has moved on two factors: the spread of Covid-19 and the decisions of OPEC and its allies about whether to increase or decrease production. In January, OPEC decided to keep production low, and in July announced that it would slowly restore production to the market over the next year. The group is not set to meet until next month, so there has been a lull in guidance since last month’s meeting.
\n
In the past two weeks, Covid-19 has continued to spread in several countries, and appears to be depressing gasoline and jet fuel demand. That helped drive the selloff in crude. But data out of China shows that that country was able to stop the spread of Covid through more aggressive lockdown measures, and travel is picking up.
\n
Jeffrey Currie, the head of commodities research at Goldman Sachs, argued in a note published Monday that the selloff was overdone in part because supply has stayed low. In general, Currie believes that producers are investing too little in new projects today to catch up to future growth, and that means prices are likely to rise.
\n
He expects the Delta variant “will prove to be a transient event, and that U.S. producers will retain their newfound discipline, as the drivers of our bullish view shift from cyclical demand impulses to the structural binding constraints of underinvestment in supply that were only accelerated by Covid-19.”
\n
Currie’s fourth-quarter oil price estimate is $80 a barrel, among the highest on Wall Street.
\n
One important level to watch is whether WTI exceeds $70, “a break of which could be very bullish,” according to Oanda analyst Craig Erlam. “There is still room to add to the promising start to the week.”
","source":"lsy1601382232898","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Oil Prices Are Swinging Higher.
