The financials joining the all-time high party feels very bullish. The stock market is hitting on all cylinders in the midst of what is supposed to be a seasonally weak period for stocks. I guess we should not be really surprised by all that strength and relentless dip-buying. Money supply has gone up 40% in the past two years alone which is the fastest pace of increase in U.S. financial history. When OPEC embargoed the U.S. in the 1970s, the price of crude rose from about $3 a barrel at the beginning of the decade to $13 a barrel by its end. The U.S. even issued gas ration coupons in 1974.
\n
The spike was good news for Chevron and Exxon Mobil, which returned roughly 100% and 70%, respectively, in the 1970s, but painful for everyone else, as inflation raged. The S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average rose just 17% and 5%, respectively, over the decade.
\n
If oil was the necessary component for the 1970s economy, chips provide the same function in the 2020s. They power everything from our computers and phones to our cars and appliances. And, as everyone knows by now, there is a shortage, with delivery times growing to more than 20 weeks, per Susquehanna Financial Group data.
\n
Roughly 80% of all the chips in the world are made in Northeast Asia. Politicians realize how big a problem this is, and they have started to demand local manufacturing, with President Joe Biden introducing a plan for $50 billion in chip research earlier this year. Reshoring any industry, including semiconductors, is a yearslong process that requires billions in capital. There will be winners and losers. And if it goes on too long, it will filter into the prices of all kinds of goods.
\n
“Shortages related to rapid upswings in demand could become inflationary,” TS Lombard’s Rory Green and Steven Blitz wrote back in January, when the scarcity of chips—”a product more known for steadily declining prices”—was in its infancy.
\n
The global semiconductor shortage has been a particular thorn in the side of the automotive industry all year. It was supposed to resolve itself by the second half of 2021. But more production cuts announced by Toyota this past week shows the problem isn’t going away soon. In fact, RBC analyst Joseph Spak argues the shortage could last for years.
\n
Part of the problem is structural, Spak says. Electric vehicles need more computing power, but the auto industry typically relies on older-generation chip technology, where capacity isn’t being as readily added by chip makers. Instead, they prefer to focus on newer, higher-end chips for the consumer electronics industry.
\n
The result: Instead of lines at the gas stations, there are lines at the automotive dealerships. Low new- and used-car inventories have pushed up pricing and contributed to rising inflation. Used-car prices rose about 20% in the first half of 2021, while new-car prices rose about 3%. The rise in used-car prices has started to slow, but new-car price gains are accelerating, rising about 7% year over year in July.
\n
That’s not good for consumers, but auto makers stand to benefit. Constrained production will lead to persistently low inventories and higher pricing. Companies will sell fewer cars, but that’s been offset by higher prices. Ford and General Motors shares are up 43% and 17%, respectively, in 2021, and both still trade for about seven times 2022 earnings.
\n
And that’s just the auto industry. The longer the chip shortage goes on, the more prices will rise in all types of products. That will benefit chip makers such as Intel and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing. Wall Street sees upside in the latter. Some two-thirds of analysts covering the stock rate it Buy, and the average price target implies about a 33% upside.
\n
Don’t expect long lines outside RadioShack, but expect the chip shortage to be felt just the same.
","source":"lsy1601382232898","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
The Chip Shortage Looks Like the Oil Shortage of the 1970s. When OPEC embargoed the U.S. in the 1970s, the price of crude rose from about $3 a barrel at the beginning of the decade to $13 a barrel by its end. The U.S. even issued gas ration coupons in 1974.\nThe spike was good news for Chevron and Exxon Mobil, which returned roughly 100% and 70%, respectively, in the 1970s, but painful for everyone else, as inflation raged. The S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average rose just 17% and 5%, respectively, over the decade.\nIf oil was the necessary component for the 1970s economy, chips provide the same function in the 2020s. They power everything from our computers and phones to our cars and appliances. And, as everyone knows by now, there is a shortage, with delivery times growing to more than 20 weeks, per Susquehanna Financial Group data.\nRoughly 80% of all the chips in the world are made in Northeast Asia. And if it goes on too long, it will filter into the prices of all kinds of goods.\n“Shortages related to rapid upswings in demand could become inflationary,” TS Lombard’s Rory Green and Steven Blitz wrote back in January, when the scarcity of chips—”a product more known for steadily declining prices”—was in its infancy.\nThe global semiconductor shortage has been a particular thorn in the side of the automotive industry all year. It was supposed to resolve itself by the second half of 2021. But more production cuts announced by Toyota this past week shows the problem isn’t going away soon. In fact, RBC analyst Joseph Spak argues the shortage could last for years.\nPart of the problem is structural, Spak says. Electric vehicles need more computing power, but the auto industry typically relies on older-generation chip technology, where capacity isn’t being as readily added by chip makers. Instead, they prefer to focus on newer, higher-end chips for the consumer electronics industry.\nThe result: Instead of lines at the gas stations, there are lines at the automotive dealerships. Low new- and used-car inventories have pushed up pricing and contributed to rising inflation. Used-car prices rose about 20% in the first half of 2021, while new-car prices rose about 3%. The rise in used-car prices has started to slow, but new-car price gains are accelerating, rising about 7% year over year in July.\nThat’s not good for consumers, but auto makers stand to benefit. Constrained production will lead to persistently low inventories and higher pricing. Companies will sell fewer cars, but that’s been offset by higher prices. Ford and General Motors shares are up 43% and 17%, respectively, in 2021, and both still trade for about seven times 2022 earnings.\nAnd that’s just the auto industry. The longer the chip shortage goes on, the more prices will rise in all types of products. That will benefit chip makers such as Intel and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing. Wall Street sees upside in the latter. Some two-thirds of analysts covering the stock rate it Buy, and the average price target implies about a 33% upside.\nDon’t expect long lines outside RadioShack, but expect the chip shortage to be felt just the same.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":66,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":883248034,"gmtCreate":1631248416428,"gmtModify":1676530508633,"author":{"id":"4091674547333280","authorId":"4091674547333280","name":"meowmeow88","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/b9e0c95f88993b5f06fcd816677a1a2f","crmLevel":7,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4091674547333280","authorIdStr":"4091674547333280"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"pretty generic. execution is another thing altogether","listText":"pretty generic. execution is another thing altogether","text":"pretty generic. execution is another thing altogether","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":8,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/883248034","repostId":"2166345008","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2166345008","kind":"highlight","pubTimestamp":1631245597,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2166345008?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-09-10 11:46","market":"us","language":"en","title":"3 Effective Strategies for Finding Value in Any Market","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2166345008","media":"Motley Fool","summary":"Whether the market is hot or not, these are some ways you can find good stocks to buy.","content":"
Are you struggling to find quality stocks to buy right now? With the market at around all-time highs, it isn't easy to find good investment options. The danger of buying shares of a soaring stock is that it could be at or near its peak. And if that happens, your return on the investment can be limited -- or negative -- even if the underlying business isn't bad.
\n
Below, I'll cover three effective strategies I've used to identify stocks that are potentially undervalued. Whether the market is red hot or struggling, they can be effective in either scenario.
\n
\n
1. Finding large gaps between trailing and forward earnings multiples
\n
The price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio is a useful multiple that you can use to compare stocks. The problem is that even one bad quarter can negatively impact this number. Whether it's a big acquisition or the coronavirus pandemic, a company's results can look significantly worse than they otherwise should. One way to find this type of discrepancy is by comparing the trailing P/E, which looks at a company's earnings over the past 12 months vs. its forward P/E, which factors in the earnings that analysts expect from the business over the next year.
\n
A stock that trades at a high trailing P/E but a low forward P/E is one that could be undervalued. With soft earnings numbers, its trailing P/E won't look so great. One stock that you can find using this approach is healthcare company Merck (NYSE:MRK). The stock's trailing P/E is over 35 but its forward P/E is less than 15. The drugmaker's revenue of $48 billion in 2020 was up just 2.4% from the previous year and net income of $7.1 billion declined by 28%.
\n
Management says that without the negative impacts of the pandemic (people have been forgoing regular care amid COVID-19 and even cancer diagnoses declined significantly last year), the growth rate for the top line would have been closer to 9%. Now, with vaccination rates increasing, there's hope that COVID-19 will be less of a disruptor in the future for the healthcare industry. And that's why Merck could be an intriguing option right now and a strong recovery play. In addition, with the recent spinoff of Organon, which focuses on women's health, Merck expects to benefit from operating efficiencies of $500 million this year and $1.5 billion in total over the next three years.
\n
Merck is an example of a company that may look overvalued right now but could be a much better buy over the next 12 months.
\n
2. Using the Relative Strength Index to find oversold stocks
\n
One technical indicator I use to find value is the Relative Strength Index (RSI). It looks at a stock's price movement (typically over the past 14 days) and compares its losses and gains over that time. As the losses significantly outweigh the gains, the number gets smaller. On a 0-100 scale, once it falls below 30, a stock is considered to be oversold. It is a momentum indicator that can be useful because it can identify a situation where investors have been overly bearish on a stock of late. It doesn't mean that every stock will turn around, but for pre-vetted companies on your watch list that fall into oversold territory, it can be a sign that now might be a good time to buy.
\n
Using this criteria, you can find a solid growth stock like beverage giant The Boston Beer Company (NYSE:SAM), which has fallen sharply since the release of second-quarter results in July when its numbers fell short of analyst expectations. The growth in its hard seltzer segment simply wasn't as strong as it was in the past, and investors may have been overreacting to what still is a promising investment. A number of analysts see the stock rising over 70% within the next two years.
\n
RSI isn't a surefire way to find a winning stock; some companies fall in value sharply for valid reasons and their businesses could be in trouble. But if you've already reviewed a company and know it is a quality investment, using RSI can be a way to help zero in on the right time to buy it as oftentimes negative press can weigh a stock down more than it should. For investors who can look past that, it may create an attractive buying opportunity.
\n
3. Buying on bad news
\n
Investing in a company that has been receiving negative press -- and is down as a result -- is another way you can find some value. It may end up leading to a stock that falls into oversold territory, but it's not always a steep enough decline to get there. Here again, context is important. If the negative press involves the company's core business and its outlook for the future, that could very well be a problem. But if the prospects for the business remain strong, it can be worth buying amid the controversy.
\n
One example here is Trulieve Cannabis, which is down sharply from its 52-week high. The maker of cannabis products has been struggling of late not because of poor results or even anything the business is doing wrong. Rather, shares have been tanking because the husband of the company's CEO was convicted on multiple charges. Even though there's no reason at this point to suggest Trulieve is in any trouble, the stock has still felt the effects of the negative press. For a cannabis company that is a major player in the growing marijuana industry, now could be a prime time to consider buying shares of the business.
\n
Bad news can appear concerning over the short term but a distant memory years later. In 2018, when a privacy scandal involving social media company Facebook and consulting firm Cambridge Analytica came out, investors could have bought shares of Facebook for around $150 in the days and weeks following the news. Today, the stock trades at more than double that price.
\n
The next time you see a negative headline on the news involving a business, consider whether it will impact its long-term growth prospects and ability to generate a profit. If it doesn't and the stock is down heavily because of the press, that could be a sign that it may be worth taking a contrarian stance on it and buying shares even as it falls in value. It may be a tough decision, but it's one that can pay off later.
","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
3 Effective Strategies for Finding Value in Any Market
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n3 Effective Strategies for Finding Value in Any Market\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-09-10 11:46 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Are you struggling to find quality stocks to buy right now? It may not have been easy to hold on to TSCO for all that time, but if you did, how much would your investment be worth today?
\n
Tractor Supply's Business In-Depth
\n
With that in mind, let's take a look at Tractor Supply's main business drivers.
\n
Headquartered in Brentwood, TN, Tractor Supply Company is the largest retail farm and ranch store chain in the United States. The company focuses on recreational farmers and ranchers as well as tradesmen and small businesses. It offers a wide array of merchandise such as livestock, pet and animal products, maintenance products for agricultural and rural use, hardware and tools, lawn and garden power equipment, truck and towing products, and work apparel.
\n
Stores of Tractor Supply are primarily located in rural areas and the suburbs of major cities, which have inside selling space of 15,000–20,000 square feet with a similar area of outside space, used to demonstrate agricultural fencing, livestock equipment and horse stalls. Petsense stores have roughly 5,500 square feet of inside selling space. For Tractor Supply retail locations, the company has a standard design for the new built-to-suit locations, including nearly 15,500 square feet of inside selling space.
\n
Tractor Supply’s broad assortment of products is tailored to meet the regional and geographic needs of its markets. Moreover, the retailer’s full line of product offerings is supported by a strong in-stock inventory position with an average of 16,000–19,500 unique products per store.
\n
Apart from selling nationally recognized branded merchandise, the company also markets an increasing list of products under its “private-label programs.” The latter include Masterhand and Job Smart (tools and tool chests), Dumor and Producers Pride (livestock feed) and Retriever and Paws ‘n Claws (pet foods). Further, the company recently acquired 100% stake in Petsense, to fortify its presence in the pet specialty space.
\n
Tractor Supply operates retail stores under the names Tractor Supply Company, Del’s Feed & Farm Supply, and Petsense as well as operate websites under the names TractorSupply.com and Petsense.com. Its online selling websites are expected to offer expanded assortment of products beyond in-store as well as boost store traffic through buy online, pickup in-store and ship to store programs.
\n
As of Jun 26, 2021, the company operated 1,955 Tractor Supply stores across 49 states and 174 Petsense stores in 23 states.
\n
Bottom Line
\n
Anyone can invest, but building a successful investment portfolio requires research, patience, and a little bit of risk. So, if you had invested in Tractor Supply ten years ago, you're likely feeling pretty good about your investment today.
\n
A $1000 investment made in August 2011 would be worth $7,295.66, or a 629.57% gain, as of August 20, 2021, according to our calculations. Investors should note that this return excludes dividends but includes price increases.
\n
The S&P 500 rose 292.14% and the price of gold increased -7.41% over the same time frame in comparison.
\n
Analysts are anticipating more upside for TSCO.
\n
Shares of Tractor Supply have outpaced the industry year to date driven by a robust surprise trend. The company’s earnings and sales beat estimates in second-quarter 2021, marking the sixth straight earnings surprise and fifth consecutive sales beat. Results gained from robust comps growth across all regions and key categories on strength in demand for seasonal categories and everyday merchandise such as consumable, usable and edible products. It witnessed record e-commerce sales in the second quarter on the back of mobile app and the Neighbor's Club loyalty program. Management raised its 2021 view. The company’s Life Out Here and ‘ONETractor’ strategies also bode well. However, higher imports, freight, wages, and commodity costs remain concerns. Consequently, it expects gross margin to decline in the second half of 2021.
\n
The stock is up 6.86% over the past four weeks, and no earnings estimate has gone lower in the past two months, compared to 12 higher, for fiscal 2021.
