Therefore, earnings will become the \"last defense\" for US stocks.</b>However, with inflationary pressures not yet easing and demand declining marginally, the key is whether profitability can withstand the pressure.</p><p>In this regard, based on the already disclosed fourth-quarter results of US stocks, we have compiled and analyzed the cost pressures, capital expenditures, and growth prospects that are of great concern to the market.</p><p><b>1. Growth trend: Year-on-year growth slowed but still exceeded expectations; Technology, energy and pharmaceuticals are the main contributors</b></p><p><ul><li><b>Profit growth slowed in the fourth quarter due to the base and the pandemic, but overall it still exceeded expectations.</b></p><p></li></ul>On a comparable basis, the S&P 500's EPS grew by 26.8% year-on-year in the fourth quarter, down from 36.8% in the third quarter. Similarly, the Nasdaq 100 index's EPS growth rate in the fourth quarter was 22% year-on-year (vs. 45% in the third quarter).</p><p>Considering factors such as the base figure and the outbreak of the Omega epidemic in the fourth quarter, the slowdown in growth was largely within expectations. It is necessary to recognize that the current profit margin level is still higher than the historical average (the average net profit margin of the S&P 500 non-financial index since 2013 is 10.3%). In addition, inflationary and cost pressures have not yet been fully alleviated, so overall growth is in a slowing direction. However, there is a big difference between a slowdown in profit growth and a recession, and a slowdown in growth does not necessarily mean a market decline.</p><p><b>Against the backdrop of a gradual improvement in the pandemic, inventory repair, and easing of channel congestion, we expect that overall growth in the United States, while unable to accelerate, can still maintain relatively stable growth.</b>The recent approaching inversion of the 2s10s curve has raised concerns about a recession, but we believe this may be somewhat distorted. More importantly, apart from the government sector, the leverage levels of the U.S. financial, corporate, and household sectors are generally low, and therefore do not face the risk of large-scale deleveraging.</p><p>Currently, the market consensus expects US stocks to grow by 9.1% in full-year earnings in 2022 (vs. 50.3% in 2021).</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/3e61cd8e6ec1ffbcea36d49380d56aee\" tg-width=\"885\" tg-height=\"608\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p><b>Downside risks stem from the Russia-Ukraine situation or other unexpected supply shocks that could further amplify and last for a longer period.</b>This will cause the long-term inflation path to rise and extend, forcing a significant tightening of monetary policy, which will put greater pressure on overall growth and the market.</p><p>Without the impact of the Russia-Ukraine incident, apparent inflation is likely to gradually decline after March due to a high base and the improvement of the pandemic. Since the beginning of the year, US stocks have been weak, with concerns about tightening, the situation between Russia and Ukraine, and inflationary pressures taking turns to suppress market performance.</p><p><b>The Federal Reserve has already initiated a rate hike at the March FOMC meeting, and it is unrealistic to expect valuations to expand again. Therefore, earnings will become the \"last defense\" for US stocks.</b>However, with inflationary pressures not yet easing and demand declining marginally, the key is whether profitability can withstand the pressure.</p><p>In this regard, based on the already disclosed fourth-quarter results of US stocks, we have compiled and analyzed the cost pressures, capital expenditures, and growth prospects that are of great concern to the market.</p><p><b>1. Growth trend: Year-on-year growth slowed but still exceeded expectations; Technology, energy and pharmaceuticals are the main contributors</b></p><p><ul><li><b>Profit growth slowed in the fourth quarter due to the base and the pandemic, but overall it still exceeded expectations.</b></p><p></li></ul>On a comparable basis, the S&P 500's EPS grew by 26.8% year-on-year in the fourth quarter, down from 36.8% in the third quarter. Similarly, the Nasdaq 100 index's EPS growth rate in the fourth quarter was 22% year-on-year (vs. 45% in the third quarter).</p><p>Considering factors such as the base figure and the outbreak of the Omega epidemic in the fourth quarter, the slowdown in growth was largely within expectations. In addition, inflationary and cost pressures have not yet been fully alleviated, so overall growth is in a slowing direction.
