Buffett's company, <b>Berkshire Hathaway</b>, had to disclose it had made a large bet on <b>Occidental Petroleum</b>. That's because the giant Buffett conglomerate had taken a stake that exceeded 10% of Occidental's stock, prompting a disclosure.</p><p>That purchase in Occidental, which seemed like a leveraged bet on higher oil prices, appeared to indicate Buffett was bullish on oil prices following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. But it also could have been for factors specific to Occidental.</p><p>It turns out that Buffett was making an even more massive bet on oil prices at the time, the full extent of which he didn't have to disclose until now.</p><h2>Chevron is now a top-three position for Berkshire, ahead of AmEx and Coke</h2><p>While Berkshire had to disclose its position in Occidental, it didn't have to do so for a huge increase in its position in <b>Chevron</b> (CVX -3.16%). Because Chevron is a much larger overall company, Berkshire was able to increase its share of the company from 2% at the end of the fourth quarter of 2021 to 8.9% by the end of the first quarter of 2022.</p><p>Thanks to rising oil prices and Chevron's rising price, the stake has now overtaken famous longtime Buffett holdings <b>American Express</b> and <b>Coca-Cola</b> in terms of size. At today's prices, Chevron now makes up 7.7% of Berkshire's $353 billion portfolio, its third-largest position, behind <b>Apple</b> in first and <b>Bank of America</b>.</p><p>When combined with Occidental's 2.1% allocation, Buffett has now bet 9.8% of Berkshire's public equity portfolio on these two oil and gas producers. That's more than double the relative allocation to energy in the <b>S&P 500</b>, at just 3.86%.</p><p><img src=\"https://g.foolcdn.com/image/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fg.foolcdn.com%2Feditorial%2Fimages%2F677171%2Fbuffett.jpg&w=700&op=resize\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"467\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/></p><p>Image source: Getty Images.</p><h2>Ukraine and the "casino" of Wall Street enabled the purchase</h2><p>Buffett has been somewhat bullish on the oil and gas sector over the past two years, purchasing its initial Chevron stake in late 2020 and acquiring the natural gas assets from <b>Dominion Energy</b> (D -2.66%) in mid-2020. These followed a preferred-stock investment in Occidental in 2019, which helped fund the company's acquisition of Anadarko.</p><p>Buffett probably liked the prices at which he could buy these assets. Investors focused on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues eschew traditional energy stocks, and exploration and production companies have limited their investments over the past decade of low energy prices. So the traditional energy sector had likely become the type of value investment Buffett seeks.</p><p>Given the aggressive pace of the purchases, it appears Russia's invasion of Ukraine stimulated Buffett's decision to act big and act quickly. Berkshire normally can't buy that much stock that quickly even if it wanted to, because it buys stock in such large size.</p><p>However, Buffett lamented the more "casino-like" nature of modern markets that enabled Berkshire to buy such a big stake so quickly. Since a large chunk of Occidental is locked up in index funds, Buffett was even more surprised he could buy so much of the company in such a short time. While it was good for Berkshire, Buffett lamented the fact that the purchase was even possible. Speaking to CNBC at Berkshire's annual shareholders meeting on Saturday, he said:</p><blockquote>That's not investment. You're not buying from [investors]. I find it just incredible. You couldn't do that with Berkshire. ... Overwhelmingly, large companies in America, they became poker chips. ... That enabled us, in a two-week period, to buy 14% of a business that's been around for decades. ... Imagine trying to [buy] 14% of the farms in this country, 14% of the apartment houses, 14% of the auto dealerships, or just anything, when already 40% were locked up some other place. It defies anything Charlie and I have seen, and we've seen a lot.</blockquote><h2>Is the oil trading over, or just getting started?</h2><p>Some might think Berkshire may be buying oil stocks near the top of the energy market. After all, oil prices have doubled since the beginning of 2021, and Buffett was buying on the way up. Moreover, there are now widespread fears about a recession later this year or next year, which could hurt oil demand. The U.S. rig count is also rising, which should bring supply on line later this year, and the government is even releasing 1 million barrels of oil per day for the next six months from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve.</p><p>On the other hand, Europe is now contemplating a quicker-than-expected embargo of Russian oil due to its atrocities in Ukraine. Moreover, the COVID-19 lockdowns in China could lift in the near future, at about the same time as the summer highway-travel season in the U.S. So there is also a case to be made that oil could be in for further gains (or at least stability at these high levels) for the foreseeable future.</p><p>In any case, Buffett tends to take a longer-term view of these things. More likely, he sees a structural supply shortfall over the next decade, and sees the high dividends from oil companies as durable. As a justification for his initial preferred-stock financing of Occidental back in 2019, he admitted the financing was a bet on higher oil prices over the long term. Given an even more favorable setup today, that view likely hasn't changed.</p><p>Individual investors should make their own decisions about their allocation to traditional energy. However, the transition to clean energy won't happen overnight. As long as the world uses fossil fuels, there will be a need for traditional energy companies. That's because the giant Buffett conglomerate had taken a stake that exceeded 10% of Occidental's stock, prompting a disclosure.That purchase in Occidental, which seemed like a leveraged bet on higher oil prices, appeared to indicate Buffett was bullish on oil prices following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. But it also could have been for factors specific to Occidental.It turns out that Buffett was making an even more massive bet on oil prices at the time, the full extent of which he didn't have to disclose until now.Chevron is now a top-three position for Berkshire, ahead of AmEx and CokeWhile Berkshire had to disclose its position in Occidental, it didn't have to do so for a huge increase in its position in Chevron (CVX -3.16%). Because Chevron is a much larger overall company, Berkshire was able to increase its share of the company from 2% at the end of the fourth quarter of 2021 to 8.9% by the end of the first quarter of 2022.Thanks to rising oil prices and Chevron's rising price, the stake has now overtaken famous longtime Buffett holdings American Express and Coca-Cola in terms of size. At today's prices, Chevron now makes up 7.7% of Berkshire's $353 billion portfolio, its third-largest position, behind Apple in first and Bank of America.When combined with Occidental's 2.1% allocation, Buffett has now bet 9.8% of Berkshire's public equity portfolio on these two oil and gas producers. That's more than double the relative allocation to energy in the S&P 500, at just 3.86%.Image source: Getty Images.Ukraine and the \"casino\" of Wall Street enabled the purchaseBuffett has been somewhat bullish on the oil and gas sector over the past two years, purchasing its initial Chevron stake in late 2020 and acquiring the natural gas assets from Dominion Energy (D -2.66%) in mid-2020. These followed a preferred-stock investment in Occidental in 2019, which helped fund the company's acquisition of Anadarko.Buffett probably liked the prices at which he could buy these assets. Investors focused on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues eschew traditional energy stocks, and exploration and production companies have limited their investments over the past decade of low energy prices. So the traditional energy sector had likely become the type of value investment Buffett seeks.Given the aggressive pace of the purchases, it appears Russia's invasion of Ukraine stimulated Buffett's decision to act big and act quickly. Berkshire normally can't buy that much stock that quickly even if it wanted to, because it buys stock in such large size.However, Buffett lamented the more \"casino-like\" nature of modern markets that enabled Berkshire to buy such a big stake so quickly. Since a large chunk of Occidental is locked up in index funds, Buffett was even more surprised he could buy so much of the company in such a short time. While it was good for Berkshire, Buffett lamented the fact that the purchase was even possible. Speaking to CNBC at Berkshire's annual shareholders meeting on Saturday, he said:That's not investment. You're not buying from [investors]. I find it just incredible. You couldn't do that with Berkshire. ... Overwhelmingly, large companies in America, they became poker chips. ... That enabled us, in a two-week period, to buy 14% of a business that's been around for decades. ... Imagine trying to [buy] 14% of the farms in this country, 14% of the apartment houses, 14% of the auto dealerships, or just anything, when already 40% were locked up some other place. It defies anything Charlie and I have seen, and we've seen a lot.Is the oil trading over, or just getting started?Some might think Berkshire may be buying oil stocks near the top of the energy market. After all, oil prices have doubled since the beginning of 2021, and Buffett was buying on the way up. Moreover, there are now widespread fears about a recession later this year or next year, which could hurt oil demand. The U.S. rig count is also rising, which should bring supply on line later this year, and the government is even releasing 1 million barrels of oil per day for the next six months from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve.On the other hand, Europe is now contemplating a quicker-than-expected embargo of Russian oil due to its atrocities in Ukraine. Moreover, the COVID-19 lockdowns in China could lift in the near future, at about the same time as the summer highway-travel season in the U.S. So there is also a case to be made that oil could be in for further gains (or at least stability at these high levels) for the foreseeable future.In any case, Buffett tends to take a longer-term view of these things. More likely, he sees a structural supply shortfall over the next decade, and sees the high dividends from oil companies as durable. As a justification for his initial preferred-stock financing of Occidental back in 2019, he admitted the financing was a bet on higher oil prices over the long term. Given an even more favorable setup today, that view likely hasn't changed.Individual investors should make their own decisions about their allocation to traditional energy. However, the transition to clean energy won't happen overnight. As long as the world uses fossil fuels, there will be a need for traditional energy companies. The lawsuit was settled in 2013 with provisions put in place to reward shareholders if the gap between the value of Class A and Class C shares became too large.</p><p>On March 27, 2014, Alphabet split its shares with every shareholder getting a share of Class C for each Class A share they owned.</p><p><b>Share Performance:</b> Shares of GOOG (Class C) traded at a price of $566.44 on March 27, 2014, after the split took place.</p><p><b>A $1,000 investment at the time of the split could have purchased 1.77 shares of GOOG. In particular, our gross margin continued its upward trend and reached 11.9% in the quarter,” Dr. Gu concluded.</p>\n<p><b>Recent Developments</b></p>\n<p><b>Dual-primary Listing in Hong Kong</b></p>\n<p>On July 7, 2021 (the “<b>Listing Date</b>”), XPeng successfully listed its Class A ordinary shares on the Main Board of The Stock Exchange of Hong Kong Limited (the “<b>Hong Kong Stock Exchange</b>”) (the “<b>Listing</b>”). The Company issued a total of 97,083,300 Class A ordinary shares in the global offering. Net proceeds from the global offering, after deducting underwriting fees and commissions were approximately HK$15,823 million, which will be used in accordance with the use of proceeds as disclosed in the prospectus of the Company published on the website of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on June 25, 2021 (the “<b>Prospectus</b>”). Since the Listing Date and as at the date of this announcement, the Company has not utilized any net proceeds from the Listing.</p>\n<p><b>Deliveries in July 2021</b></p>\n<p>Total Smart EV deliveries of XPeng reached 8,040 in July 2021, representing a 228% increase year- over-year. The year-over-year increase was mainly due to higher vehicle delivery especially for the P7, which started at the end of June 2020. The quarter-over-quarter increase was also attributable to the higher P7 sales as a result of seasonality, channel expansion and brand equity improvement.</p>\n<p><i>Revenues from services and others</i>were RMB176.9 million (US$27.4 million) for the second quarter of 2021, representing an increase of 256.2% from RMB49.7 million for the same period of 2020 and an increase of 25.8% from RMB140.6 million for the first quarter of 2021. The year-over-year and the quarter-over-quarter increases were mainly attributed to more income from service, parts and accessory sales in line with higher accumulated vehicle sales.</p>\n<p><b>Cost of sales</b> was RMB3,312.7 million (US$513.1 million) for the second quarter of 2021, representing an increase of 445.7% from RMB607.0 million for the same period of 2020 and an increase of 26.4% from RMB2,621.1 million for the first quarter of 2021. The P5 will officially be launched in China in September 2021 with deliveries starting in the fourth quarter of 2021. That's because the giant Buffett conglomerate had taken a stake that exceeded 10% of Occidental's stock, prompting a disclosure.</p><p>That purchase in Occidental, which seemed like a leveraged bet on higher oil prices, appeared to indicate Buffett was bullish on oil prices following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. But it also could have been for factors specific to Occidental.</p><p>It turns out that Buffett was making an even more massive bet on oil prices at the time, the full extent of which he didn't have to disclose until now.</p><h2>Chevron is now a top-three position for Berkshire, ahead of AmEx and Coke</h2><p>While Berkshire had to disclose its position in Occidental, it didn't have to do so for a huge increase in its position in <b>Chevron</b> (CVX -3.16%). Because Chevron is a much larger overall company, Berkshire was able to increase its share of the company from 2% at the end of the fourth quarter of 2021 to 8.9% by the end of the first quarter of 2022.</p><p>Thanks to rising oil prices and Chevron's rising price, the stake has now overtaken famous longtime Buffett holdings <b>American Express</b> and <b>Coca-Cola</b> in terms of size. At today's prices, Chevron now makes up 7.7% of Berkshire's $353 billion portfolio, its third-largest position, behind <b>Apple</b> in first and <b>Bank of America</b>.</p><p>When combined with Occidental's 2.1% allocation, Buffett has now bet 9.8% of Berkshire's public equity portfolio on these two oil and gas producers. That's more than double the relative allocation to energy in the <b>S&P 500</b>, at just 3.86%.</p><p><img src=\"https://g.foolcdn.com/image/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fg.foolcdn.com%2Feditorial%2Fimages%2F677171%2Fbuffett.jpg&w=700&op=resize\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"467\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/></p><p>Image source: Getty Images.</p><h2>Ukraine and the "casino" of Wall Street enabled the purchase</h2><p>Buffett has been somewhat bullish on the oil and gas sector over the past two years, purchasing its initial Chevron stake in late 2020 and acquiring the natural gas assets from <b>Dominion Energy</b> (D -2.66%) in mid-2020. These followed a preferred-stock investment in Occidental in 2019, which helped fund the company's acquisition of Anadarko.</p><p>Buffett probably liked the prices at which he could buy these assets. Investors focused on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues eschew traditional energy stocks, and exploration and production companies have limited their investments over the past decade of low energy prices. So the traditional energy sector had likely become the type of value investment Buffett seeks.</p><p>Given the aggressive pace of the purchases, it appears Russia's invasion of Ukraine stimulated Buffett's decision to act big and act quickly. Berkshire normally can't buy that much stock that quickly even if it wanted to, because it buys stock in such large size.</p><p>However, Buffett lamented the more "casino-like" nature of modern markets that enabled Berkshire to buy such a big stake so quickly. Since a large chunk of Occidental is locked up in index funds, Buffett was even more surprised he could buy so much of the company in such a short time. While it was good for Berkshire, Buffett lamented the fact that the purchase was even possible. Speaking to CNBC at Berkshire's annual shareholders meeting on Saturday, he said:</p><blockquote>That's not investment. You're not buying from [investors]. I find it just incredible. You couldn't do that with Berkshire. ... Overwhelmingly, large companies in America, they became poker chips. ... That enabled us, in a two-week period, to buy 14% of a business that's been around for decades. ... Imagine trying to [buy] 14% of the farms in this country, 14% of the apartment houses, 14% of the auto dealerships, or just anything, when already 40% were locked up some other place. It defies anything Charlie and I have seen, and we've seen a lot.</blockquote><h2>Is the oil trading over, or just getting started?</h2><p>Some might think Berkshire may be buying oil stocks near the top of the energy market. After all, oil prices have doubled since the beginning of 2021, and Buffett was buying on the way up. Moreover, there are now widespread fears about a recession later this year or next year, which could hurt oil demand. The U.S. rig count is also rising, which should bring supply on line later this year, and the government is even releasing 1 million barrels of oil per day for the next six months from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve.</p><p>On the other hand, Europe is now contemplating a quicker-than-expected embargo of Russian oil due to its atrocities in Ukraine. Moreover, the COVID-19 lockdowns in China could lift in the near future, at about the same time as the summer highway-travel season in the U.S. So there is also a case to be made that oil could be in for further gains (or at least stability at these high levels) for the foreseeable future.</p><p>In any case, Buffett tends to take a longer-term view of these things. More likely, he sees a structural supply shortfall over the next decade, and sees the high dividends from oil companies as durable. As a justification for his initial preferred-stock financing of Occidental back in 2019, he admitted the financing was a bet on higher oil prices over the long term. Given an even more favorable setup today, that view likely hasn't changed.</p><p>Individual investors should make their own decisions about their allocation to traditional energy. However, the transition to clean energy won't happen overnight. As long as the world uses fossil fuels, there will be a need for traditional energy companies. That's because the giant Buffett conglomerate had taken a stake that exceeded 10% of Occidental's stock, prompting a disclosure.That purchase in Occidental, which seemed like a leveraged bet on higher oil prices, appeared to indicate Buffett was bullish on oil prices following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. But it also could have been for factors specific to Occidental.It turns out that Buffett was making an even more massive bet on oil prices at the time, the full extent of which he didn't have to disclose until now.Chevron is now a top-three position for Berkshire, ahead of AmEx and CokeWhile Berkshire had to disclose its position in Occidental, it didn't have to do so for a huge increase in its position in Chevron (CVX -3.16%). Because Chevron is a much larger overall company, Berkshire was able to increase its share of the company from 2% at the end of the fourth quarter of 2021 to 8.9% by the end of the first quarter of 2022.Thanks to rising oil prices and Chevron's rising price, the stake has now overtaken famous longtime Buffett holdings American Express and Coca-Cola in terms of size. At today's prices, Chevron now makes up 7.7% of Berkshire's $353 billion portfolio, its third-largest position, behind Apple in first and Bank of America.When combined with Occidental's 2.1% allocation, Buffett has now bet 9.8% of Berkshire's public equity portfolio on these two oil and gas producers. These followed a preferred-stock investment in Occidental in 2019, which helped fund the company's acquisition of Anadarko.Buffett probably liked the prices at which he could buy these assets. Investors focused on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues eschew traditional energy stocks, and exploration and production companies have limited their investments over the past decade of low energy prices. So the traditional energy sector had likely become the type of value investment Buffett seeks.Given the aggressive pace of the purchases, it appears Russia's invasion of Ukraine stimulated Buffett's decision to act big and act quickly. Berkshire normally can't buy that much stock that quickly even if it wanted to, because it buys stock in such large size.However, Buffett lamented the more \"casino-like\" nature of modern markets that enabled Berkshire to buy such a big stake so quickly. Since a large chunk of Occidental is locked up in index funds, Buffett was even more surprised he could buy so much of the company in such a short time. While it was good for Berkshire, Buffett lamented the fact that the purchase was even possible. Speaking to CNBC at Berkshire's annual shareholders meeting on Saturday, he said:That's not investment. You're not buying from [investors]. I find it just incredible. You couldn't do that with Berkshire. ... Overwhelmingly, large companies in America, they became poker chips. ... That enabled us, in a two-week period, to buy 14% of a business that's been around for decades. ... Imagine trying to [buy] 14% of the farms in this country, 14% of the apartment houses, 14% of the auto dealerships, or just anything, when already 40% were locked up some other place. It defies anything Charlie and I have seen, and we've seen a lot.Is the oil trading over, or just getting started?Some might think Berkshire may be buying oil stocks near the top of the energy market. After all, oil prices have doubled since the beginning of 2021, and Buffett was buying on the way up. Moreover, there are now widespread fears about a recession later this year or next year, which could hurt oil demand. The U.S. rig count is also rising, which should bring supply on line later this year, and the government is even releasing 1 million barrels of oil per day for the next six months from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve.On the other hand, Europe is now contemplating a quicker-than-expected embargo of Russian oil due to its atrocities in Ukraine. Moreover, the COVID-19 lockdowns in China could lift in the near future, at about the same time as the summer highway-travel season in the U.S. So there is also a case to be made that oil could be in for further gains (or at least stability at these high levels) for the foreseeable future.In any case, Buffett tends to take a longer-term view of these things. More likely, he sees a structural supply shortfall over the next decade, and sees the high dividends from oil companies as durable. As a justification for his initial preferred-stock financing of Occidental back in 2019, he admitted the financing was a bet on higher oil prices over the long term. Given an even more favorable setup today, that view likely hasn't changed.Individual investors should make their own decisions about their allocation to traditional energy. However, the transition to clean energy won't happen overnight. As long as the world uses fossil fuels, there will be a need for traditional energy companies. In particular, our gross margin continued its upward trend and reached 11.9% in the quarter,” Dr. Gu concluded.</p>\n<p><b>Recent Developments</b></p>\n<p><b>Dual-primary Listing in Hong Kong</b></p>\n<p>On July 7, 2021 (the “<b>Listing Date</b>”), XPeng successfully listed its Class A ordinary shares on the Main Board of The Stock Exchange of Hong Kong Limited (the “<b>Hong Kong Stock Exchange</b>”) (the “<b>Listing</b>”). The Company issued a total of 97,083,300 Class A ordinary shares in the global offering. Net proceeds from the global offering, after deducting underwriting fees and commissions were approximately HK$15,823 million, which will be used in accordance with the use of proceeds as disclosed in the prospectus of the Company published on the website of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on June 25, 2021 (the “<b>Prospectus</b>”). Since the Listing Date and as at the date of this announcement, the Company has not utilized any net proceeds from the Listing.</p>\n<p><b>Deliveries in July 2021</b></p>\n<p>Total Smart EV deliveries of XPeng reached 8,040 in July 2021, representing a 228% increase year- over-year. The July deliveries consisted of 6,054 P7s, XPeng’s smart sports sedan, and 1,986 G3s, XPeng’s compact smart sport utility vehicle (“<b>SUV</b>”). As of July 31, 2021, year-to-date deliveries reached 38,778, representing a 388% increase year-over-year.</p>\n<p><b>Launch of G3i</b></p>\n<p>In July 2021, the Company launched the G3i SUV, the new mid-cycle facelift version of the G3, with deliveries expected to start in September this year. Incorporating the P7’s proven family design language, coupled with a brand-new look, the G3i is equipped with an intelligent in-car operating system and a powerful advanced driver-assistance system.</p>\n<p><b>The Pre-sales for P5</b></p>\n<p>In July 2021, XPeng commenced pre-sales for its third mass-produced model, the P5, XPeng’s smart family sedan, the world’s first mass-produced light detection and ranging (LIDAR) equipped Smart EV. The P5 will officially be launched in China in September 2021 with deliveries starting in the fourth quarter of 2021. The P5 will be equipped with advanced driver-assistance system features powered by XPeng’s full-stack in-house developed XPILOT 3.5 advanced driver-assistance system, which extended the Navigation Guided Pilot (NGP) function for highways and expressways to include major urban roads, traffic intersections and other complex city driving scenarios.</p>\n<p><b>Release of Valet Parking Assist (VPA)</b></p>\n<p>In June 2021, XPeng rolled out Valet Parking Assist, one of the most advanced automated parking function in the Chinese market, which memorizes locations and layouts of frequently used parking spots and enables advanced driver-assistance system for such parking lots.</p>\n<p><b>Unaudited Financial Results For the Three Months Ended June 30, 2021</b></p>\n<p><b>Total revenues</b> were RMB3,761.3 million (US$582.5 million) for the second quarter of 2021, representing an increase of 536.7% from RMB590.8 million for the same period of 2020 and an increase of 27.5% from RMB2,950.9 million for the first quarter of 2021.</p>\n<p><i>Revenues from vehicle sales</i>were RMB3,584.4 million (US$555.1 million) for the second quarter of 2021, representing an increase of 562.4% from RMB541.1 million for the same period of 2020 and an increase of 27.5% from RMB2,810.3 million for the first quarter of 2021. The year-over-year increase was mainly due to higher vehicle delivery especially for the P7, which started at the end of June 2020. The quarter-over-quarter increase was also attributable to the higher P7 sales as a result of seasonality, channel expansion and brand equity improvement.</p>\n<p><i>Revenues from services and others</i>were RMB176.9 million (US$27.4 million) for the second quarter of 2021, representing an increase of 256.2% from RMB49.7 million for the same period of 2020 and an increase of 25.8% from RMB140.6 million for the first quarter of 2021. The year-over-year and the quarter-over-quarter increases were mainly attributed to more income from service, parts and accessory sales in line with higher accumulated vehicle sales.</p>\n<p><b>Cost of sales</b> was RMB3,312.7 million (US$513.1 million) for the second quarter of 2021, representing an increase of 445.7% from RMB607.0 million for the same period of 2020 and an increase of 26.4% from RMB2,621.1 million for the first quarter of 2021. The year-over-year and the quarter-over-quarter increases were mainly due to the increase of vehicle deliveries as described above.</p>\n<p><b>Gross margin</b> was 11.9% for the second quarter of 2021, compared with negative 2.7% and 11.2% for the second quarter of 2020 and the first quarter of 2021, respectively.</p>\n<p><b>Vehicle margin</b> was 11.0% for the second quarter of 2021, compared with negative 5.6% for the same period of 2020 and 10.1% for the first quarter of 2021. The improvement was primarily attributable to better product mix and material cost reduction.</p>\n<p><b>Research and development expenses</b> were RMB863.5 million (US$133.7 million) for the second quarter of 2021, representing an increase of 170.0% from RMB319.8 million for the same period of 2020 and an increase of 61.4% from RMB535.1 million for the first quarter of 2021. The year-over-year and the quarter-over-quarter increases were mainly due to (i) the increase in employee compensation as a result of expanded research and development staff, and (ii) higher expenses relating to the development of vehicles and related software technologies.</p>\n<p><b>Selling, general and administrative expenses</b> were RMB1,030.8 million (US$159.6 million) for the second quarter of 2021, representing an increase of 116.0% from RMB477.1 million for the same period of 2020 and an increase of 43.0% from RMB720.8 million for the first quarter of 2021. The year-over-year and the quarter-over-quarter increases were mainly due to (i) higher marketing, promotional and advertising expenses to support vehicle sales, and (ii) the expansion of our sales network and associated personnel cost, and commission for franchised store sales.</p>\n<p><b>Loss from operations</b> was RMB1,443.2 million (US$223.5 million) for the second quarter of 2021, compared with RMB779.1 million for the same period of 2020 and RMB903.9 million for the first quarter of 2021.
