I strongly believe that the market has priced in too much negativity and pessimism as compared to reality and investors are well advised to follow one of Buffett&#39;s key maxims:</p><blockquote>Be greedy when others are fearful.</blockquote><p>Alibaba has grown at a 5-year CAGR of more than 42%, but the company&#39;s stock is trading at a PE of about x17. This indicates a clear undervaluation.</p><p>Of course, I understand that investors are worried about a potential ADR delisting, slowing economy and crackdown on internet/tech companies. However, just like a bull market tops on the most bullish conditions, a bear market bottoms on the most bearish conditions. While investors should study and understand the risks, I personally believe that Alibaba stock will rebound strongly from current price levels of below $100/share.</p><p>Personally, I see more than 50% upside for BABA stock, as I calculate the company&#39;s fair value with a residual earnings model anchored on fundamentals and analyst consensus estimates. My target price is $133.92.</p><p><b>A Best-In-Class Company</b></p><p>Alibaba is one of the biggest e-commerce companies in the world. The company operates three main shopping sites Taobao, Tmall and Alibaba.com, which cumulatively serve some 828 million monthly active buyers (fiscal year ending March 31, 2021).</p><p>Alibaba also has stakes in multiple innovative internet/technology businesses such as Youku (video entertainment), Pony.Ai (Autonomous Driving) and most notably Ant Group (The world&#39;s biggest financial service company). Alipay serves almost the entire population in China. The platform has 1.3 billion users and 80 million merchants. Notably, the total payment volume of Alipay was more than $19 trillion in 2021.</p><p>Moreover, Alibaba is a dominant force in China&#39;s cloud market with about37% market share. So far as growth accelerated so did the company's P/E ratio, which suggests an even more optimistic future scenario. In other words, Nvidia's bottom line could fulfil even the rosiest forecasts but the share price could still disappoint, if the premium paid for high growth decreases.</p>\n<p>As we saw earlier, right now both NVDA and AMD are the two highest growth names in the semiconductors peer group and as such are rewarded by a proportionally higher earnings multiple.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/680a02fe38521c886f802828f1a86480\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"285\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>Source: prepared by the author, using data from Seeking Alpha</span></p>\n<p>Due to Nvidia's leading positioning and higher profitability, the company lies above the trend line on the graph above.</p>\n<p>Interestingly enough, if we exclude the high-flying GPU companies, the R-Squared between the rest of the peer group is just 0.12 which means that there isn't a strong relationship between future growth and valuations for everything other than GPUs in the semiconductors space.</p>\n<p>This is due to the fact that NVDA and AMD chips are expected to have a more sustained growth beyond next year as GPUs remain crucial for data centers, autos, digital currencies and a number of other workloads related to artificial intelligence (AI).</p>\n<p>This also means that NVDA and AMD are among the highest duration stocks in the sample and as such the most sensitive to changes in interest rates. Meaning that all else being equal, NVDA and AMD shares will be hit much harder than those of their peers in an event of rising interest rates.</p>\n<p>That is why, NVDA Price-to-Sales ratio trails the performance of iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (TLT), which is influenced by long-term bond yields.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/4a706f8ec1fe650806ddbf2b3730c659\" tg-width=\"635\" tg-height=\"450\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>Data by YCharts</span></p>\n<p>In the graph above, the TLT does a very good job at explaining movements in Nvidia's P/S ratio, with the exception of the last quarter of calendar year 2018, when crypto-related demand had a profound impact on the company's topline results.</p>\n<blockquote>\n Three factors contributed to the Q4 gaming revenue decline. That is why it is worth noticing that lower interest rates have profound implications for returns of momentum stocks (see the graph below).</p>\n<p>In the graph below I measure momentum by taking a long position in the iShares Edge MSCI USA Momentum Factor ETF (MTUM) and a short position in the iShares Edge MSCI USA Value Factor ETF (VLUE).</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/2664fc3740387f87d6aa32f635ed3dd1\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"285\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>Source: prepared by the author, using data from Yahoo! During this period, Nvidia share price more than doubled from around $60 (post-split) in January to $130 in December of the same year. Adding the risk of lower demand from cryptocurrency mining, and the prospects of Nvidia share price continuing to outperform look slim. That is why, investors should not be surprised, if going forward Nvidia share price disappoints even as management continues to deliver on its strategy.</p>\n<p>Of course, there is always the possibility that the Federal Reserve will be unable to taper and bring bond yields to a more normalized level, which in itself will be enough to propel Nvidia's share price to new all-time highs. Nevertheless, this is a highly uncertain event that is also unrelated to Nvidia's business performance. All three major U.S. stock indexes ended in negative territory in a reminder that September is a historically rough month for stocks.\nSo far this month the S&P 500 is down nearly 1.8% even as the benchmark index has gained over 18% since the beginning of the year.\n“There is a possibility that the market is simply ready to go through an overdue correction,” said Sam Stovall, chief investment strategist at CFRA Research in New York. “From a seasonality perspective, September tends to be the window dressing period for fund managers.”\nThe advent of the highly contagious Delta COVID variant has driven an increase in bearish sentiment regarding the recovery from the global health crisis, and many now expect a substantial correction in stock markets by the end of the year.\n“We’re still in a corrective mode that people have been calling for months,” said Paul Nolte, portfolio manager at Kingsview Asset Management in Chicago. “Economic data points have been missing estimates, and that has coincided with the rise in the Delta variant.”\nThe CPI report delivered a lower-than-consensus August reading, a deceleration that supports Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell’s assertion that spiking inflation is transitory and calms market fears that the central bank will begin tightening monetary policy sooner than expected.\nU.S. Treasury yields dropped on the data, which pressured financial stocks, and investor favor pivoted back to growth at the expense of value. Let’s take a look at how the charts are setting up.</p>\n<p><b>Trading Apple Stock</b></p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/bd94f6dcfc32af44a4ae542425f3c92f\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"429\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Daily chart of Apple stock.</span></p>\n<p>Each time Apple has reported earnings this year, it has resulted in a selloff. Unfortunately, those selloffs would come right as the stock was at or near all-time highs. Those events are marked on the chart with blue arrows.</p>\n<p>It was even more frustrating that Apple&nbsp;blew out analysts’ expectations each time, yet the stock sold off anyway.</p>\n<p>However, rather than a massive dip following the most recent report, the stock only pulled back to the $145 area, near the prior high. It also held the 21-day moving average as support.</p>\n<p>The stock has since pushed up through $150 and earlier this week, hit new all-time highs.</p>\n<p>For now, we’re getting a dip back down to the key $150 area and the 21-day moving average. Aggressive bulls can buy this dip ahead of the company’s event on Tuesday.</p>\n<p>If we break Friday’s low, investors may consider stopping out of the trade and buying on a potentially larger dip down to the 50-day moving average or the $145 area.</p>\n<p>Below $145 may put the $138 level and the 200-day moving average in play.</p>\n<p>Should Apple trade up through the all-time high at $157.26, the 161.8% extension is in play up near $160. My bearish thesis was very simple: I anticipated that the Fed would increase the interest rates aggressively to combat the rising inflation, which will cause a recession and the recessionary bear market.</li><li>On April 22, I reiterated the expectation that the Fed would aggressively raise interest rates in 2022, when I recommended a sell on SP500 with the index value at 4271.</li><li>On May 3rd, I pointed out that the liquidity risk due to expectations of monetary policy tightening is easing and that monetary policy expectations are priced in (the peak Fed hawkishness) and I suggested covering short positions and going neutral on SPY at around 415.</li><li>On May 30, I recommended to start buying S&amp;P 500, with SPY at 413, and continued to recommend buying S&amp;P 500 on June 27with SPY at 388, and July 18 with SPY at 388. The bullish thesis was also very simple: we were past the peak inflation and expected to be past the peak headline inflation given the falling commodity prices, and thus, past the Fed hawkishness. Further, given the still positive yield curve spread between the 10Y Treasury Bond and the 3-month Treasury Bill, the probability of an imminent recession was very low. Thus, I expected at least a nice (and significant) counter-trend summer rally.</li></ul><p><b>Downgrade from buy to neutral</b></p><p>Since reaching the (cycle) bottom on June 16th, S&amp;P 500 is up almost 13%, and SPY is currently at 411 near the breakeven of my May 30th buying point, and significantly higher than my June 27th and July 18th buying points. I am willing to take profits on these long positions. Here is the SPY chart that illustrates the significant countertrend bounce to the top range:</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8922eaf1a5e1edfdacb69e1c401c3bc9\" tg-width=\"1280\" tg-height=\"852\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/>SPY data by YCharts</p><p>I am downgrading SPY to neutral for these reasons:</p><p>1) The 10Y-3mo spread has significantly narrowed to 0.26%, which is although still positive, getting really close to inversion. Thus, the probability of an imminent recession is too high to ignore now. Here is the chart;</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/2d6a289024ab1fe23863cb2e03cafdaa\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"221\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>FRED</p><p>2) Even more problematic is that the narrowing of the 10Y-3mo is also created by the falling 10Y yields, which signals the economic slowdown. More importantly, the 10Y yields are falling due to the falling real rates, which is signaling a possible flight to quality and expectations on policy easing (not tightening). Here is the chart of 10Y TIPS (real interest rates), which have fallen towards the zero percent level (0.20%):</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/c3a40a5667fce1317ab25f12a2362313\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"201\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>FRED</p><p>3) The credit risk is rising. The spread between BBB-10Y is reaching the cyclical high at 2.42%. Although this spread is still modest and requires the rise above 3% to be considered high, the trend is to the upside.</p><p>4) The market is now pricing that the Fed would start cutting interest rates in July of 2023, which indicates the expectations of a possible recession in 2023. Here are the current monetary policy expectations, based on Global Academic View report:</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/b1a4d5b38a7bfe1df8cb60589bfba130\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"138\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Global Academic View</p><p>Considering the point 2 (falling real interest rates) and 4 (expectations on interest rate cuts), the market is likely to respond negatively to slowing economic data and start pricing the <b>Phase 2</b>of the bear market - an imminent recession selloff.</p><p>Thus, I am willing to take profit on the summer rally bounce and evaluate what exactly the market is pricing next and initiate the new positions accordingly.</p><p><b>The Bearish case</b></p><p>The bearish case is now the baseline expectations, as long as the 10y-3mo spreads invert, and the 10Y continues to fall. The bearish case is the Phase 2 of the full bear market - the pricing of an imminent recession, where the economic data slows and corporate earnings get downgraded.</p><p><b>The Bullish case</b></p><p>The bullish case is the soft landing case, where the Fed makes the full dovish pivot and does not increase interest rates above the 10Y yields.</p><p><b>The Neutral case</b></p><p>The fact is, we still don&#39;t have enough information with respect to the bearish case or the bullish case. We don&#39;t know how is the Fed reacting to the potential rising unemployment, with still elevated inflation. Will the Fed tolerate a higher inflation to prevent a rising unemployment? Will the Fed specifically acknowledge that the 10Y yields are the celling for the Federal Funds rate?</p><p>The Fed Chair Powell indicated that the Fed is currently in the neutral, but also that further interest rate hikes are warranted. Well, this will invert the 10y-3mo curve and likely cause a recession.</p><p>More importantly, the S&amp;P500 is now rising, and many are likely to start buying, while the shorts are likely to be forced to cover. So, the summer rally could continue - despite the worsening fundamentals.</p><p>I view this technical picture more as an opportunity to initiate short positions (if the bear case prevails). Thus, at this point, the neutral position means, I am not buying the summer rally anymore, and taking profits and tactical longs. It also means, I am waiting to initiate new positions, as the new set up emerges.</p><p><b>Note on recent SPY performance</b></p><p>Over the last month, SPY, which is the ETF that tracks S&amp;P500, is up by 8.16%, led by Consumer Discretionary sector (XLY) up by 16.7% and Technology (XLK) up by 12%. Both of these are cyclical sectors that have bounced from the deep sell-offs, but given the expectations of an imminent recession, the performance of these sectors is unsustainable. My bearish thesis was very simple: I anticipated that the Fed would increase the interest rates aggressively to combat the rising inflation, which will cause a recession and the recessionary bear market.On April 22, I reiterated the expectation that the Fed would aggressively raise interest rates in 2022, when I recommended a sell on SP500 with the index value at 4271.On May 3rd, I pointed out that the liquidity risk due to expectations of monetary policy tightening is easing and that monetary policy expectations are priced in (the peak Fed hawkishness) and I suggested covering short positions and going neutral on SPY at around 415.On May 30, I recommended to start buying S&P 500, with SPY at 413, and continued to recommend buying S&P 500 on June 27with SPY at 388, and July 18 with SPY at 388. The bullish thesis was also very simple: we were past the peak inflation and expected to be past the peak headline inflation given the falling commodity prices, and thus, past the Fed hawkishness. Further, given the still positive yield curve spread between the 10Y Treasury Bond and the 3-month Treasury Bill, the probability of an imminent recession was very low. Thus, I expected at least a nice (and significant) counter-trend summer rally.Downgrade from buy to neutralSince reaching the (cycle) bottom on June 16th, S&P 500 is up almost 13%, and SPY is currently at 411 near the breakeven of my May 30th buying point, and significantly higher than my June 27th and July 18th buying points. I am willing to take profits on these long positions. Here is the SPY chart that illustrates the significant countertrend bounce to the top range:SPY data by YChartsI am downgrading SPY to neutral for these reasons:1) The 10Y-3mo spread has significantly narrowed to 0.26%, which is although still positive, getting really close to inversion. Thus, the probability of an imminent recession is too high to ignore now. Here is the chart;FRED2) Even more problematic is that the narrowing of the 10Y-3mo is also created by the falling 10Y yields, which signals the economic slowdown. More importantly, the 10Y yields are falling due to the falling real rates, which is signaling a possible flight to quality and expectations on policy easing (not tightening). Here is the chart of 10Y TIPS (real interest rates), which have fallen towards the zero percent level (0.20%):FRED3) The credit risk is rising. The spread between BBB-10Y is reaching the cyclical high at 2.42%. Although this spread is still modest and requires the rise above 3% to be considered high, the trend is to the upside.4) The market is now pricing that the Fed would start cutting interest rates in July of 2023, which indicates the expectations of a possible recession in 2023. Here are the current monetary policy expectations, based on Global Academic View report:Global Academic ViewConsidering the point 2 (falling real interest rates) and 4 (expectations on interest rate cuts), the market is likely to respond negatively to slowing economic data and start pricing the Phase 2of the bear market - an imminent recession selloff.Thus, I am willing to take profit on the summer rally bounce and evaluate what exactly the market is pricing next and initiate the new positions accordingly.The Bearish caseThe bearish case is now the baseline expectations, as long as the 10y-3mo spreads invert, and the 10Y continues to fall. The bearish case is the Phase 2 of the full bear market - the pricing of an imminent recession, where the economic data slows and corporate earnings get downgraded.The Bullish caseThe bullish case is the soft landing case, where the Fed makes the full dovish pivot and does not increase interest rates above the 10Y yields.The Neutral caseThe fact is, we still don't have enough information with respect to the bearish case or the bullish case. We don't know how is the Fed reacting to the potential rising unemployment, with still elevated inflation. Will the Fed tolerate a higher inflation to prevent a rising unemployment? Will the Fed specifically acknowledge that the 10Y yields are the celling for the Federal Funds rate?The Fed Chair Powell indicated that the Fed is currently in the neutral, but also that further interest rate hikes are warranted. Well, this will invert the 10y-3mo curve and likely cause a recession.More importantly, the S&P500 is now rising, and many are likely to start buying, while the shorts are likely to be forced to cover. So, the summer rally could continue - despite the worsening fundamentals.I view this technical picture more as an opportunity to initiate short positions (if the bear case prevails). Thus, at this point, the neutral position means, I am not buying the summer rally anymore, and taking profits and tactical longs. It also means, I am waiting to initiate new positions, as the new set up emerges.Note on recent SPY performanceOver the last month, SPY, which is the ETF that tracks S&P500, is up by 8.16%, led by Consumer Discretionary sector (XLY) up by 16.7% and Technology (XLK) up by 12%. Both of these are cyclical sectors that have bounced from the deep sell-offs, but given the expectations of an imminent recession, the performance of these sectors is unsustainable. Then in 2018, 2019 and 2020, its revenue grew 59.87%, 51.17% and 48.12%, respectively. Pinterest reported 2020 revenue of $1.69 billion. This is a strong revenue trend that I admire.</p>\n<p>But, while a strong balance sheet and strong revenue growth are the two factors to like about Pinterest, it isn’t without its blemishes. Here are the three main things that make PINS stock less appealing.</p>\n<p><b>Lackluster User Growth</b></p>\n<p>Pinterest benefited greatly from the coronavirus pandemic in 2020. The stock reached a 52-week high of $89.90 on strong momentum that started in late 2020. But the stock has since tumbled about 40% to its current price near $55.</p>\n<p>The main issue? Repeated&nbsp;misses on its user growth targets. If we use<i>MSN Money</i>to<i>c</i>ompare key financial metrics, such as price-to-sales ratio, price-to-book value and price-to-cash flow ratio, to same ratios of the Software &amp; IT Services space more broadly, we find that Pinterest is relatively overvalued.</p>\n<p>Specifically, PINS stock has a price-to-sales ratio of 21.23x, a price-to-book value ratio of 15.57x and a price-to-cash flow ratio of 3,145x. Meanwhile, the industry’s equivalent ratios are as follows: 7.35x, 7.76x and 29.68x, respectively.</p>\n<p>Ultimately, PINS stock has some severe fundamental issues to solve before it’s truly buy-worthy in my book. Congress needs to pass a debt-ceiling increase to fund the government, and a stop-gap spending bill later this month to avoid a <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/WASH\">Washington</a> shutdown in October.</p>\n<p>For now, our market experts are relatively sanguine about the economic impact of the Delta variant of Covid-19. As long as vaccines remain effective in minimizing severe infections that lead to hospitalizations and deaths, the negative effects of the current Covid wave will be limited largely to the travel industry and movie theaters, they say. Wall Street’s base case for the market doesn’t include a renewed wave of lockdowns that would undermine economic growth.</p>\n<p>Inflation has been a hot topic at the Fed and among investors, partly because it has been running so hot of late. The U.S. consumer price index rose at an annualized 5.4% in both June and July—a spike the Fed calls transitory, although others aren’t so sure. The strategists are taking Powell’s side of the argument; they expect inflation to fall significantly next year. Their forecasts fall between 2.5% and 3.5%, which they consider manageable for consumers and companies, and an acceptable side effect of rapid economic growth. An inflation rate above 2.5%, however, combined with Fed tapering, would mean that now ultralow bond yields should rise.</p>\n<p>“We think inflation will continue to run hotter than it has since the financial crisis, but it’s hard for us to see inflation much over 2.5% once many of the reopening-related pressures start to dissipate,” says Michael Fredericks, head of income investing for theBlackRockMulti-Asset Strategies Group. “So bond yields do need to move up, but that will happen gradually.”</p>\n<p>The strategists see the yield on the 10-year U.S. Treasury note climbing to around 1.65% by year end. That’s about 35 basis points—or hundredths of a percentage point—above current levels, but below the 1.75% that the yield reached at its March 2021 highs. By next year, the 10-year Treasury could yield 2%, the group says. Those aren’t big moves in absolute terms, but they’re meaningful for&nbsp;the bond market—and could be even more so for stocks.</p>\n<p>Rising yields tend to weigh on stock valuations for two reasons. Higher-yielding bonds offer competition to stocks, and companies’ future earnings are worthless in the present when discounting them at a higher rate. Still, a 10-year yield around 2% won’t be enough to knock stock valuations down to pre-Covid levels. Even if yields climb, market strategists see the price/earnings multiple of the S&amp;P 500 holding well above its 30-year average of 16 times forward earnings. A return to the 16-times long-term average isn’t in the cards until there is more pressure from much higher yields—or something else that causes stocks to fall.</p>\n<p>If yields surge past 2% or 2.25%, investors could start to question equity valuations more seriously, says&nbsp;<a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/STT\">State</a> Street’schief portfolio strategist, Gaurav Mallik: “We haven’t seen [the 10-year yield] above 2% for some time now, so that’s an important sentiment level for investors.”</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/93ff6490069ab5dc1b4057f1ff7966f3\" tg-width=\"664\" tg-height=\"441\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>Wilson is more concerned, noting that the stock market’s valuation risk is asymmetric: “It’s very unlikely that multiples are going to go up, and there’s a good chance that they go down more than 10% given the deceleration in growth and where we are in the cycle,” he says</p>\n<p>If 16 to 23 times forward earnings is the range, he adds, “you’re already at the very high end of that. There’s more potential risk than reward.”</p>\n<p>Some P/E-multiple compression is baked into all six strategists’ forecasts, heaping greater importance on the path of profit growth. On average, the strategists expect S&amp;P 500 earnings to jump 46% this year, to about $204, after last year’s earnings depression. That could be followed by a more normalized gain of 9% in 2022, to about $222.50.</p>\n<p>A potential headwind would be a higher federal corporate-tax rate in 2022. The details of Democrats’ spending and taxation plans will be worked out in the coming weeks, and investors can expect to hear a lot more about potential tax increases. Several strategists see a 25% federal rate on corporate profits as a likely compromise figure, above the 21% in place since 2018, but below the 28% sought by the Biden administration.</p>\n<p>An increase of that magnitude would shave about 5% off S&amp;P 500 earnings next year. The index could drop by a similar amount as the passage of the Democrats’ reconciliation bill nears this fall, but the impact should be limited to that initial correction. As with the tax cuts in December 2017, the change should be a <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a>-time event for the market, some strategists predict.</p>\n<p>These concerns aside, investors shouldn’t miss the bigger picture: The U.S. economy is in good shape and growing robustly. The strategists expect gross domestic product to rise 6.3% this year and about 4% in 2022. “The cyclical uplift and above-trend growth will continue at least through 2022, and we want to be biased toward assets that have that exposure,” says Mallik.</p>\n<blockquote>\n “We’re going to have a hot economy this year and next. When GDP growth is above average, value beats growth and cyclicals beat defensives.”— Lori Calvasina, RBC Capital Markets\n</blockquote>\n<p>The State Street strategist recommends overweighting materials, financials, and technology in investment portfolios. That approach includes both economically sensitive companies, such as banks and miners, and steady growers in the tech sector.</p>\n<p>RBC Capital Markets’ head of U.S. equity strategy, Lori Calvasina, likewise takes a barbell approach, with both cyclical and growth exposure. Her preferred sectors are energy, financials, and technology.</p>\n<p>“Valuations are still a lot more attractive in financials and energy than growth [sectors such as technology or consumer discretionary,]” Calvasina says. “The catalyst in the near term is getting out of the current Covid wave... We’re going to have a hot economy this year and next, and traditionally when GDP growth is above average, value beats growth and cyclicals beat defensives.”</p>\n<p>But the focus on quality will be pivotal, especially moving into the second half of 2022. That’s when the Fed is likely to hike interest rates for the first time in this cycle. By 2023, the economy could return to pre-Covid growth on the order of 2%.</p>\n<p>“The historical playbook is that coming out of a recession, you tend to see low-quality outperformance that lasts about a year, then leadership flips back to high quality,” Calvasina says. “But that transition from low quality back to high quality tends to be very bumpy.”</p>\n<p><b>A Shopping List for Fall</b></p>\n<p>Most strategists favor a combination of economically sensitive stocks and steady growers, including tech shares. Financials should do well, particularly if bond yields rise.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/a54c4bd114c1a5f7f700d1fc14d30d8e\" tg-width=\"970\" tg-height=\"230\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p>Although stocks with quality attributes have outperformed the market this summer, according to a <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/BLK\">BlackRock</a> analysis, the quality factor has lagged since positive vaccine news was first reported last November.</p>\n<p>“We’re moving into a mid-cycle environment, when underlying economic growth remains strong but momentum begins to decelerate,” BlackRock’s Fredericks says. “Our research shows that quality stocks perform particularly well in such a period.”</p>\n<p>He recommends overweighting profitable technology companies; financials, including banks, and consumer staples and industrials with those quality characteristics.</p>\n<p>For <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/WFC\">Wells Fargo</a>’s head of equity strategy, Christopher Harvey, a mix of post-pandemic beneficiaries and defensive exposure is the way to go. He constructed a basket of stocks with lower-than-average volatility—which should outperform during periods of market uncertainty or stress this fall—and high “Covid beta,” or sensitivity to good or bad news about the pandemic. One requirement; The stocks had to be rated the equivalent of Buy by Wells Fargo’s equity analysts.</p>\n<p>“There’s near-term economic uncertainty, interest-rate uncertainty, and Covid risk, and generally we’re in a seasonally weaker part of the year around September,” says Harvey. “If we can balance low vol and high Covid beta, we can mitigate a lot of the upcoming uncertainty and volatility around timing of several of those catalysts. Longer-term, though, we still want to have that [reopening exposure.]”</p>\n<p>Harvey’s list of low-volatility stocks with high Covid beta includesApple(AAPL),<a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/BAC\">Bank of America</a>(BAC),<a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/NTRSP\">Northern</a> Trust(NTRS),Lowe’s(LOW),<a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/IQV\">IQVIA</a> Holdings(IQV), andMasco(MAS).</p>\n<p>Overall, banks are the most frequently recommended group for the months ahead. TheInvesco KBW Bankexchange-traded fund (KBWB) provides broad exposure to the sector in the U.S.</p>\n<p>“We like the valuations [and] credit quality; they are now allowed to buy back shares and increase dividends, and there’s higher Covid beta,” says Harvey.</p>\n<p>Cheaper valuations mean less potential downside in a market correction. And, contrary to much of the rest of the stock market, higher interest rates would be a tailwind for the banks, which could then charge more for loans.</p>\n<p><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/HCSG\">Healthcare</a> stocks also have some fans. “<a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/HR\">Healthcare</a> has both defensive and growth attributes to it,” Wilson says. “You’re paying a lot less per unit of growth in healthcare today than you are in other sectors. So we think it provides good balance in this market when we’re worried about valuation.” Health insurerHumana(HUM) makes Wilson’s “Fresh Money Buy List” of stocks Buy-rated by <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/MS\">Morgan Stanley</a> analysts and fitting his macro views.</p>\n<p>Nuveen’s Malik is also looking toward health care for relatively underpriced growth exposure, namely in the pharmaceuticals and biotechnology groups. She points toSeagen(SGEN), which is focused on oncology drugs and could be an attractive acquisition target for a pharma giant.</p>\n<p>Malik also likesAbbVie(ABBV) which trades at an undemanding eight times forward earnings and sports a 4.7% dividend yield. The coming expiration of patents on its blockbuster anti-inflammatory drug Humira has kept some investors away, but Malik is confident that management can limit the damage and sees promising drugs in development at the $200 billion company.</p>\n<p>Both stocks have had a tough time in recent days. Seagen fell more than 8% last week, to around $152, on news that its co-founder and CEO sold a large number of shares recently. AndAbbVietanked 7% Wednesday, to $112.27, after the Food and Drug Administration required new warning labels for JAK inhibitors, a type of anti-rheumatoid drug that includes one of <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/ABBV\">AbbVie</a>’s most promising post-Humira products.</p>\n<p><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/PFE\">Pfizer</a>(PFE),<a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AXP\">American Express</a>(AXP),Johnson &amp; Johnson(JNJ), andCisco Systems(CSCO) are other S&amp;P 500 members that pass a<i>Barron’s</i>screen for quality attributes.</p>\n<p>After a year of steady gains, investors might be reminded this fall that stocks can also decline, as growth momentum and policy support begin to fade. That could be followed by a more normalized gain of 9% in 2022, to about $222.50.\nA potential headwind would be a higher federal corporate-tax rate in 2022. The details of Democrats’ spending and taxation plans will be worked out in the coming weeks, and investors can expect to hear a lot more about potential tax increases. Several strategists see a 25% federal rate on corporate profits as a likely compromise figure, above the 21% in place since 2018, but below the 28% sought by the Biden administration.\nAn increase of that magnitude would shave about 5% off S&P 500 earnings next year. The index could drop by a similar amount as the passage of the Democrats’ reconciliation bill nears this fall, but the impact should be limited to that initial correction. As with the tax cuts in December 2017, the change should be a one-time event for the market, some strategists predict.\nThese concerns aside, investors shouldn’t miss the bigger picture: The U.S. economy is in good shape and growing robustly. The strategists expect gross domestic product to rise 6.3% this year and about 4% in 2022. “The cyclical uplift and above-trend growth will continue at least through 2022, and we want to be biased toward assets that have that exposure,” says Mallik.\n\n “We’re going to have a hot economy this year and next. That approach includes both economically sensitive companies, such as banks and miners, and steady growers in the tech sector.\nRBC Capital Markets’ head of U.S. equity strategy, Lori Calvasina, likewise takes a barbell approach, with both cyclical and growth exposure. By 2023, the economy could return to pre-Covid growth on the order of 2%.\n“The historical playbook is that coming out of a recession, you tend to see low-quality outperformance that lasts about a year, then leadership flips back to high quality,” Calvasina says. “But that transition from low quality back to high quality tends to be very bumpy.”\nA Shopping List for Fall\nMost strategists favor a combination of economically sensitive stocks and steady growers, including tech shares. Financials should do well, particularly if bond yields rise.\n\nAlthough stocks with quality attributes have outperformed the market this summer, according to a BlackRock analysis, the quality factor has lagged since positive vaccine news was first reported last November.\n“We’re moving into a mid-cycle environment, when underlying economic growth remains strong but momentum begins to decelerate,” BlackRock’s Fredericks says. “Our research shows that quality stocks perform particularly well in such a period.”\nHe recommends overweighting profitable technology companies; financials, including banks, and consumer staples and industrials with those quality characteristics.\nFor Wells Fargo’s head of equity strategy, Christopher Harvey, a mix of post-pandemic beneficiaries and defensive exposure is the way to go. He constructed a basket of stocks with lower-than-average volatility—which should outperform during periods of market uncertainty or stress this fall—and high “Covid beta,” or sensitivity to good or bad news about the pandemic. One requirement; The stocks had to be rated the equivalent of Buy by Wells Fargo’s equity analysts.\n“There’s near-term economic uncertainty, interest-rate uncertainty, and Covid risk, and generally we’re in a seasonally weaker part of the year around September,” says Harvey. “If we can balance low vol and high Covid beta, we can mitigate a lot of the upcoming uncertainty and volatility around timing of several of those catalysts. Following its Wall Street debut through direct listing in September 2020, the stock quickly went on to become a darling among retail investors.</p><p>The interest in Palantir stock gradually waned. After scaling an all-time high of $45 on Jan. 27, 2021, the stock came all the way back down to sub-$10 levels amid the Ukraine-induced sell-off. It is now trading almost flat with its debut session’s price.</p><p>In an era when data is king, why is PLTR stock unable to capitalize on the promising opportunity? What would take the stock to break free of the lackluster phase and launch into a rally?</p><p><b>How Palantir Makes Money</b></p><p>Founded in 2003, Palantir originally set out to provide data analytics to defense agencies, intelligence agencies and governments to help them in matters of natural security, surveillance and other things. It has now broadened its business scope to include corporations.</p><p>In fiscal-year 2021, the company derived 58% of its revenue from the government segment, while 42% came from commercial customers.</p><p>The company has three main software platforms, namely Gotham, Foundry and Apollo. Gotham helps users to identify patterns from datasets, which in turn facilitates planning and execution of real-world responses to threats. Foundry is meant to create a central operating system for data belonging to companies. This allows them to integrate and analyze data in one place. Apollo is a platform meant to securely deliver software and updates across the company’s businesses.</p><p>Palantir sells its platform under a subscription model, and therefore revenue primarily comes from subscription. The company follows this an interesting practice of investing in early- and growth-stage companies, generally SPACs, in return for agreements to subscribe to its platforms.</p><p>This Peter Thiel-backed company also invests in gold. The 10-K report for the fiscal year ending Dec. 31, 2021 showed that the company amassed $50.9 million worth of 100-ounce gold bars, which will be stashed away in a third-party facility situated in northeastern U.S.</p><p><b>Why Q4 Results Didn’t Help PLTR Stock?</b></p><p>Denver, Colorado-based Palantir reported in mid-February fourth-quarter revenue of $433 million, up 34% year-over-year. The topline exceeded the consensus estimate of $418 million.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/3c87b297f2dad8a592ebc61e88d6fd1c\" tg-width=\"508\" tg-height=\"182\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>Source: Chart by Shanthi Rexaline</span></p><p>Gross margin expanded 1.7 percentage points to 79.8% in the fourth quarter. The operating loss narrowed, thanks to the topline growth and a less than 1% decline in total operating expenses.</p><p>Sales &amp; marketing accounted for roughly 40.2% of the total operating expenses, general and administrative expenses made up 40% and R&amp;D roughly 20.8%. Interest expenses as opposed to interest income a year ago and higher provisioning for income taxes resulted in a flat loss per share on a GAAP basis despite the better operating leverage.</p><p>Non-GAAP earnings per share came in at 2 cents, half as much as analysts had hoped for.</p><p>Palantir guided to first-quarter revenue of $443 million, which was higher than the then-consensus estimate of $439 million. The company also reiterated its long-term revenue goal of 30% or greater growth through 2025.</p><p>Apparently, investors are getting impatient with Palantir over its inability to transfer the gains on the topline all the way down to its bottom line.</p><p><b>How Is PLTR Stock Positioned Near Term</b></p><p>Palantir’s co-founder and CEO Alex Karp suggested on the fourth-quarter earnings call that the growth achieved thus far has come despite the scarce salesforce.Net dollar retention – the measure of how a software-as-a-service (SaaS) company’s recurring revenue has swelled or declined for a particular period – was at a robust 131%.</p><p>Karp sees scope for further improvement from hiring additional sales people.  The company is looking to add around 200 more people to its sales team. Although operating expenses will likely balloon, the initiative will likely bring in incremental revenue. It remains to be seen if revenue can grow enough to keep the operating margin stable.</p><p>There are skeptics as well. Excluding contribution from strategic investments,topline growth decelerated, and government revenue growth continues to head southward, Citigroup analyst Tyler Radke said in a note reviewing fourth-quarter earnings.</p><p>Palantir’s CEO, however, dismissed concerns over the marked slowdown in government revenue growth. “What you see in U.S. gov is a compounded growth of 30%, but like this which is the positive of U.S. gov is it’s reliable. The sums are big. The quality of the revenue is very high,” Karp said.</p><p>The company said it closed 64 deals, valued at $1 million or more in the fourth quarter.</p><p><b>Bottom Line On Palantir Stock</b></p><p>Palantir cannot be shrugged off as a phony company lacking a sound business model. Skeptics, however, may want to see evidence of accelerating organic revenue growth, margin expansion and continued execution.</p><p>Piper Sandler analyst Weston Twigg, meanwhile, expects reacceleration in government revenues, premised on increased adoptions by the U.S. and other nations amid the Ukraine war.</p><p>PLTR stock, which is off about 68% from its peak, is currently trading at a trailing-twelve-month Price/Sales ratio of 14.31 times. The valuation seems fairly reasonable or even a little depressed compared to the 35+ multiple it once boasted in September 2021. In comparison, the company’s SaaS peer <b>Datadog</b>(NASDAQ:<b><u>DDOG</u></b>) sports a heady multiple of 48.5 times.</p><p>The average analysts’ price target for PLTR stock, according to data compiled by <i>TipRanks</i>, is $13.75,suggesting roughly 23% upside from current levels.</p><p>Given the general pessimism toward the tech space amid the ongoing macroeconomic concerns and geopolitical tensions, and the prevalence of company-specific risks, I recommend taking a hold stance on the stock. Following its Wall Street debut through direct listing in September 2020, the stock quickly went on to become a darling among retail investors.The interest in Palantir stock gradually waned. After scaling an all-time high of $45 on Jan. 27, 2021, the stock came all the way back down to sub-$10 levels amid the Ukraine-induced sell-off. It is now trading almost flat with its debut session’s price.In an era when data is king, why is PLTR stock unable to capitalize on the promising opportunity? What would take the stock to break free of the lackluster phase and launch into a rally?How Palantir Makes MoneyFounded in 2003, Palantir originally set out to provide data analytics to defense agencies, intelligence agencies and governments to help them in matters of natural security, surveillance and other things. It has now broadened its business scope to include corporations.In fiscal-year 2021, the company derived 58% of its revenue from the government segment, while 42% came from commercial customers.The company has three main software platforms, namely Gotham, Foundry and Apollo. Gotham helps users to identify patterns from datasets, which in turn facilitates planning and execution of real-world responses to threats. Foundry is meant to create a central operating system for data belonging to companies. This allows them to integrate and analyze data in one place. Apollo is a platform meant to securely deliver software and updates across the company’s businesses.Palantir sells its platform under a subscription model, and therefore revenue primarily comes from subscription. The company follows this an interesting practice of investing in early- and growth-stage companies, generally SPACs, in return for agreements to subscribe to its platforms.This Peter Thiel-backed company also invests in gold. The 10-K report for the fiscal year ending Dec. 31, 2021 showed that the company amassed $50.9 million worth of 100-ounce gold bars, which will be stashed away in a third-party facility situated in northeastern U.S.Why Q4 Results Didn’t Help PLTR Stock?Denver, Colorado-based Palantir reported in mid-February fourth-quarter revenue of $433 million, up 34% year-over-year. The topline exceeded the consensus estimate of $418 million.Source: Chart by Shanthi RexalineGross margin expanded 1.7 percentage points to 79.8% in the fourth quarter. The operating loss narrowed, thanks to the topline growth and a less than 1% decline in total operating expenses.Sales & marketing accounted for roughly 40.2% of the total operating expenses, general and administrative expenses made up 40% and R&D roughly 20.8%. Interest expenses as opposed to interest income a year ago and higher provisioning for income taxes resulted in a flat loss per share on a GAAP basis despite the better operating leverage.Non-GAAP earnings per share came in at 2 cents, half as much as analysts had hoped for.Palantir guided to first-quarter revenue of $443 million, which was higher than the then-consensus estimate of $439 million. The company also reiterated its long-term revenue goal of 30% or greater growth through 2025.Apparently, investors are getting impatient with Palantir over its inability to transfer the gains on the topline all the way down to its bottom line.How Is PLTR Stock Positioned Near TermPalantir’s co-founder and CEO Alex Karp suggested on the fourth-quarter earnings call that the growth achieved thus far has come despite the scarce salesforce.Net dollar retention – the measure of how a software-as-a-service (SaaS) company’s recurring revenue has swelled or declined for a particular period – was at a robust 131%.Karp sees scope for further improvement from hiring additional sales people.  The company is looking to add around 200 more people to its sales team. Although operating expenses will likely balloon, the initiative will likely bring in incremental revenue. It remains to be seen if revenue can grow enough to keep the operating margin stable.There are skeptics as well. Excluding contribution from strategic investments,topline growth decelerated, and government revenue growth continues to head southward, Citigroup analyst Tyler Radke said in a note reviewing fourth-quarter earnings.Palantir’s CEO, however, dismissed concerns over the marked slowdown in government revenue growth. “What you see in U.S. gov is a compounded growth of 30%, but like this which is the positive of U.S. gov is it’s reliable. The sums are big. The quality of the revenue is very high,” Karp said.The company said it closed 64 deals, valued at $1 million or more in the fourth quarter.Bottom Line On Palantir StockPalantir cannot be shrugged off as a phony company lacking a sound business model. Skeptics, however, may want to see evidence of accelerating organic revenue growth, margin expansion and continued execution.Piper Sandler analyst Weston Twigg, meanwhile, expects reacceleration in government revenues, premised on increased adoptions by the U.S. and other nations amid the Ukraine war.PLTR stock, which is off about 68% from its peak, is currently trading at a trailing-twelve-month Price/Sales ratio of 14.31 times. The valuation seems fairly reasonable or even a little depressed compared to the 35+ multiple it once boasted in September 2021. In comparison, the company’s SaaS peer Datadog(NASDAQ:DDOG) sports a heady multiple of 48.5 times.The average analysts’ price target for PLTR stock, according to data compiled by TipRanks, is $13.75,suggesting roughly 23% upside from current levels.Given the general pessimism toward the tech space amid the ongoing macroeconomic concerns and geopolitical tensions, and the prevalence of company-specific risks, I recommend taking a hold stance on the stock.
