The Cash App is a mobile payment service available to users in the U.S. and the U.K. and facilitates instant money transfers within the app and allows Cash App Card users to access in-network ATMs for free. The Cash App has seen growing popularity with users and it had 53M active accounts at the end of the first-quarter, meaning Block added a massive 14M new users in the last two years. The roll-out of the Cash App Card is an especially promising driver of growth for Block: The Fintech had about 20M users of its Cash App Card (38% of Cash App users) in March 2023 compared to just 11M two years ago (28% of Cash App users).</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/b6f2011f60318ed2343b73f8fb3b2e90\" alt=\"Source: Block\" title=\"Source: Block\" tg-width=\"451\" tg-height=\"345\"/><span>Source: Block</span></p><p>According to eMarketer, the Cash App&#39;s popularity is expected to continue to result in significant customer attraction in the next few years. Block is expected to add approximately 3-4M new Cash App users to its ecosystem annually over the next three years, a number that I believe could be conservative given the recent momentum in Cash App user sign-ups. I believe the Cash App could have 72-75M users by the end of FY 2026... if the company&#39;s most recent momentum in sign-ups can be sustained.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/e43089be8ef855f4dc65e37b5b4271c5\" alt=\"Source: Oberlo\" title=\"Source: Oberlo\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"326\"/><span>Source: Oberlo</span></p><p>In Q1&#39;23, the Cash App generated $3.3B in revenues, resulting in $931M in gross profit. Block&#39;s Cash App gross profit growth was 49% year over year in the first-quarter and is driving the company&#39;s consolidated gross profit growth. Strong growth in Cash App gross profit is due to the fact that the Cash App is benefiting from accelerating customer adoption, new money inflows to the Cash App ecosystem and increasing customer uptake of the Cash App Card.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/a87e3a2dbc0ccfbe6ac394e0945b15be\" alt=\"Source: Block\" title=\"Source: Block\" tg-width=\"492\" tg-height=\"407\"/><span>Source: Block</span></p><h2>Growth potential outside of the U.S.</h2><p>One aspect that I really like about an investment in Block is that the company is still fairly focused on the U.S. market for revenue and earnings generation, but the Fintech has aggressively pushed into the international marketplace in the last two years. In the first-quarter of 2023, 16% of Block&#39;s gross profit ($122M) was achieved in markets outside the U.S. compared to just 6% ($22M) three years ago. PayPal has a much lower earnings multiplier factor of 11X, but PayPal is also growing its earnings at a much lower rate than Block. What would change my mind is if Block lost its momentum with its Cash App business which is the firm&#39;s current growth driver.</p><h2>Final thoughts</h2><p>Block submitted a strong earnings sheet for the first-quarter that showed that the company&#39;s core product, the Cash App, continues to benefit from growing reach and engagement. Cash App momentum is therefore, in my opinion, the best reason for investors to buy shares of Block, even if this growth comes at a premium price. The culmination of a VIX expiration, Fed minutes, and monthly options expiration helped break the equity market down on Friday and potentially ended the summer rally dead in its tracks.</p><p>Now maybe about when things get interesting, with Jackson Hole this week and a slew of Fed officials pushing back against the markets, concluding with Jay Powell himself on Friday, August 26.</p><p><b>Anchored In Reality</b></p><p>While equity markets have been in fantasyland focused on a make-believe dovish Fed pivot, the bond and currency markets have been anchored in reality. That reality shows there is no pivot, and those who bet on a pivot coming will be proven wrong.</p><p>The Fed Fund Futures show us that rates have moved sharply higher since the July FOMC meeting, with two more full rate hikes priced starting in May 2023 until the beginning of 2024. On top of that, the peak rate has shifted from January 2023 to April. The Fed Funds Futures are now pricing in more rate hikes and staying higher for longer.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/279e0ddd9681ce78c8efdf65c92585c4\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"501\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Bloomberg</p><p>Not only that, but the spread between the December 2022 and the December 2023 Fed Funds contracts has narrowed to just -11 bps, from more than -40 bps in July. That is a massive shift in just a short period, indicating that the market is pricing fewer rate cuts in 2023.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/520f537a254ceca325f0f739ed24da86\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"245\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Bloomberg</p><p>Even nominal yields appear to agree and have risen sharply since the weaker-than-expected CPI and PPI reports. Instead of rates falling, they have increased. Look at the yield curve, with the rates rising between 15 and 20 bps on the 5-Year Treasury out to the 30-year Treasury. Meanwhile, 2-year rates have remained unchanged. If the market viewed a dovish pivot or that inflation would suddenly come crashing down, then rates should be falling, not rising.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/97f8a1c6b137e1fea5ea132a785895e6\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"343\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Bloomberg</p><p>Even the dollar index has risen significantly. After initially plunging following the CPI report, the dollar index has broken out, surpassing a critical downtrend. It has increased by nearly 4% since August 11 and almost 1.5% from its July 27 lows. The dollar has been rising because it sees more hawkish monetary policy, and it had a massive move higher following the Fed minutes on August 17.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/c963707b39f3349cfa0a3bf889ef05c3\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"344\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>TradingView</p><p><b>Unhinged</b></p><p>Meanwhile, since July 14, the S&amp;P 500 has risen by 13.6% through August 19 and by as much as 15.7% at its August 16 peak. That has pushed the S&amp;P 500 PE ratio on a trailing-twelve-month basis up to 20.6. That is more than 3 points higher than its historical average going back to the year 1954 of 17. The most jaw-dropping feature may be that in the 1970s and the early 1980s, the last time inflation was this high, the PE ratio was below 10. The big difference between now and then was that rates were much higher in the 1970s and 1980s.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/e92b730aa1436fd685a6d1f890b5b335\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"336\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Bloomberg</p><p>The high inflation rates of the 1970s and 1980s pushed the nominal 10-year rate to around 16% at its peak by 1981. Meanwhile, the spread or the difference between the 10-year rate and the y/y CPI rate was positive. Right now, that spread is profoundly negative at more than 6%. The only two other times in recent history that happened were in 1975 and 1980. It would suggest that if the inflation rate doesn&#39;t start coming down quickly, nominal yields will need to push much higher in the future.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8e02eafa0eb56ad0caef5937cc718999\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"337\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Bloomberg</p><p>The big problem is that the S&amp;P 500 earnings over the past twelve months have been around $204, and at 17 times earnings, the value of the S&amp;P 500 would fall to approximately 3,480. But the higher rates have to rise, the lower the PE multiple would need to contract. For example, if the PE returned to the December 2018 low of around 16, the S&amp;P 500 would be worth around 3,200.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/06a8c0ae388bca3ab540abd41f585412\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"336\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Bloomberg</p><p>In typically equity market fashion, it has become detached, while the reality is again reflected in the bond market, the currency market, and the Fed Funds Futures. Equities tend to be irrational when they either rise or fall, but this time they have become unhinged, and this recent summer rally may fade away even faster than it came to be.</p><p>The summer fade may be especially true if Powell can deliver a message that is clear and direct and not one that is two-sided. That reality shows there is no pivot, and those who bet on a pivot coming will be proven wrong.The Fed Fund Futures show us that rates have moved sharply higher since the July FOMC meeting, with two more full rate hikes priced starting in May 2023 until the beginning of 2024. On top of that, the peak rate has shifted from January 2023 to April. The Fed Funds Futures are now pricing in more rate hikes and staying higher for longer.BloombergNot only that, but the spread between the December 2022 and the December 2023 Fed Funds contracts has narrowed to just -11 bps, from more than -40 bps in July. That is a massive shift in just a short period, indicating that the market is pricing fewer rate cuts in 2023.BloombergEven nominal yields appear to agree and have risen sharply since the weaker-than-expected CPI and PPI reports. Instead of rates falling, they have increased. Look at the yield curve, with the rates rising between 15 and 20 bps on the 5-Year Treasury out to the 30-year Treasury. Meanwhile, 2-year rates have remained unchanged. If the market viewed a dovish pivot or that inflation would suddenly come crashing down, then rates should be falling, not rising.BloombergEven the dollar index has risen significantly. After initially plunging following the CPI report, the dollar index has broken out, surpassing a critical downtrend. It has increased by nearly 4% since August 11 and almost 1.5% from its July 27 lows. The dollar has been rising because it sees more hawkish monetary policy, and it had a massive move higher following the Fed minutes on August 17.TradingViewUnhingedMeanwhile, since July 14, the S&P 500 has risen by 13.6% through August 19 and by as much as 15.7% at its August 16 peak. That has pushed the S&P 500 PE ratio on a trailing-twelve-month basis up to 20.6. That is more than 3 points higher than its historical average going back to the year 1954 of 17. The most jaw-dropping feature may be that in the 1970s and the early 1980s, the last time inflation was this high, the PE ratio was below 10. The big difference between now and then was that rates were much higher in the 1970s and 1980s.BloombergThe high inflation rates of the 1970s and 1980s pushed the nominal 10-year rate to around 16% at its peak by 1981. Meanwhile, the spread or the difference between the 10-year rate and the y/y CPI rate was positive. Right now, that spread is profoundly negative at more than 6%. The only two other times in recent history that happened were in 1975 and 1980. It would suggest that if the inflation rate doesn't start coming down quickly, nominal yields will need to push much higher in the future.BloombergThe big problem is that the S&P 500 earnings over the past twelve months have been around $204, and at 17 times earnings, the value of the S&P 500 would fall to approximately 3,480. But the higher rates have to rise, the lower the PE multiple would need to contract. For example, if the PE returned to the December 2018 low of around 16, the S&P 500 would be worth around 3,200.BloombergIn typically equity market fashion, it has become detached, while the reality is again reflected in the bond market, the currency market, and the Fed Funds Futures. For example, back in March 2022, SOXX was trading at a P/E of about 31.5x and SPDR S&amp;P 500 Trust ETF (SPY) at about 26.5x according to Yahoo Finance data. However, recent corrections have brought SOXX P/E to the current level of 15.45x, about a 17% discount from the S&amp;P 500’s 18.4x.</p><p>And you will see next that the discount from the NASDAQ 100 index, represented by the Invesco QQQ ETF (NASDAQ:QQQ), is even larger. To wit, SOXX suffered a total loss of 18.6% YTD and QQQ about 22% as you can see from the following chart. Combined with earnings changes, the valuation of SOXX now stands at 15.45x and QQQ at 22.01x, a discount of almost 30%.</p><p>Besides the valuation compression, the volatility has also become much quieter recently, adding another reason for considering a heavier bet on the tech sector. As you can see from the second chart below, the volatility index has subdued substantially YTD, decreasing from the 30+ level routinely seen at the earlier part of the year to the current level of 22.4x. To provide broader context, a volatility of 30 is at the top 93% percentile of historical volatility. While 22 is at about 71% percentile. The major reason for the quieter volatility is Fed’s recent rate movements and comments, which are consistent with market expectations and also provide clarity for the near term. It is one of the most popular funds tracking the Nasdaq-100 Index. However, as aforementioned, many investors are unaware that QQQ is not a pure-tech play because the NASDAQ 100 index tracks the largest NON-FINANCIAL companies listed on the Nasdaq and many of these companies are not tech companies. I will table this for now and come back to this point later.</p><p>SOXX, in contrast, is a pure tech play completely concentrated in the semiconductor sector. As detailed in the fund description:</p><blockquote>The iShares Semiconductor ETF seeks to track the investment results of an index composed of U.S.-listed equities in the semiconductor sector. It provides exposure to U.S. companies that design, manufacture, and distribute semiconductors and targeted access to domestic semiconductor stocks. It is used to express a sector view.</blockquote><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/e966fca4e88cd458f9c755dfd52b8913\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"408\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Source: ETF.com</p><p><b>SOXX vs QQQ: Past performance and risks</b></p><p>Both the SOXX and QQQ funds have delivered handsome returns in the past as you can see from the chart below. SOXX has delivered an annual return of 10.12% since its inception in 2022, and QQQ has delivered a slightly higher CAGR of 11.5%. Both outperformed the S&amp;P 500 by a good margin of about 2% to 3%.</p><p>When compounded over the past decade, such an alpha has accumulated into a sizable difference in total return. With dividends reinvested, SOXX has delivered a total return of 720% and QQQ more than 930%, far higher than the S&amp;P 500’s 525%.</p><p>Although the downside is their price volatilities. We’ve already seen a glimpse of their price volatility in the short term in the previous section already in the past year. As you can see in the long term, both SOXX and QQQ have suffered much larger volatility than the S&amp;P 500 too. And SOXX in particular has suffered by far the largest volatility. In terms of standard deviation, it&#39;s 27% is almost double that of the SP 500 (14%) and has also been higher than QQQ by about a whole 8%. In terms of worst-year performance, SOXX suffered a 51% loss (which will take more than a 100% rally to breakeven), which was 10% more than QQQ and 14% more than SP 500. And finally, in terms of maximum drawdown, SOXX’s 62% maximum drawdown (which takes a 163% rally to break even) is truly nerve-wracking. In contrast, both QQQ and SP 500 were in the 50% range.</p><p>And next, we will see that the root cause of the volatilities is in their fundamental indexing methods.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/e3142137b9f8dc11b7c904ca806134bb\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"413\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Portfolio Visualizer</p><p><b>SOXX vs QQQ: More concentrated bet on Tech</b></p><p>As aforementioned, QQQ tracks the largest NON-FINANCIAL companies listed on the Nasdaq and many of these companies are not tech companies. As you can see from the chart below, information technology represents 49.8% of QQQ’s total assets, followed by communication services at 17.7%, and consumer discretionary at 14.9%. Admittedly, some of the companies in communication services and consumer discretionary are also tech companies. Nonetheless, information technology only represents a minor majority of the farm. Note that QQQ also holds a good portion of consumer staples, healthcare, industrials, and utilities.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/3925a655d51f43f4e802067912a50996\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"409\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>SOXX and QQ fund fact sheets</p><p>SOXX, in contrast, is a pure tech play. The fund is completely invested in the tech sector, especially the semiconductor sector. As you can see, it invests more than 79.1% of its total assets in semiconductor stocks and more than 20.6% in semiconductor equipment. Furthermore, its holdings are also more concentrated. SOXX holds a total of 32 stocks and QQQ about 100.</p><p>You can also see the concentration and composition more vividly by looking at their top ten holdings. One of their top 10 holdings overlaps: Nvidia (NVDA). But NVDA represents an 8.3% allocation in SOXX, in contrast to only 3.28% in QQQ. Also note that QQQ’s top holdings include stables like Costco (COST) and PepsiCo (PEP), while all SOXX holdings are semiconductor stocks.</p><p>To me, this is key for SOXX’s long-term performance. It places concentrated bet one of the most innovative sectors: information technologies. For this reason and the current valuation, I see favorable odds for SOXX to keep outperforming S&amp;P 500 in the long term. I also see good odds for it to outperform QQQ too, as to be detailed next.</p><p>But again, before we turn the page, investors need to be aware of the volatility risks and to pick the right fund for their timeframe and risk tolerance.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/3996f0a253361b226144eebb3f7ed5d8\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"503\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Source: ETF.com</p><p><b>SOXX vs QQQ: valuation comparison</b></p><p>As aforementioned, SOXX has historically been traded at a premium relative to both S&amp;P 500 and QQQ because of its growth potential. However, recent price corrections have brought its valuation to a discount. SOXX’s current P/E of 15.45x is ~17% discounted from the S&amp;P 500. And as the next table shows, the discount from QQQ is even larger.</p><p>The price-to-earnings ratio of SOXX is 15.4x only, below QQQ’s 22.0x by about a whopping 30%. Other metrics paint the same picture. The price-to-cash flow ratio of SOXX is 19.5x, below QQQ’s 22.8x by about 15%. And price-to-book value ratio of SOXX is 7.13x, below QQQ’s 8.93x by about 20%, despite SOXX’s higher ROE of 46% vs 40% of QQQ. Finally, do not be alarmed by SOXX’s higher price-to-sales ratio. Its price-to-sales ratio of 6.23x is higher than QQQ by about 35%, but its net margin is higher by 90%.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/5b2dc581df59faffb1ea586d8ea07356\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"157\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Author</p><p><b>Final thoughts and risks</b></p><p>There are good reasons to start considering the tech sector now. QQQ has never been a bad choice with its low fee, broad market representation, and excellent liquidity. However, more aggressive investors with a long timeframe might want to consider SOXX also given the valuation correction and the quieter volatility ahead. SOXX has historically enjoyed a valuation premium over the overall market. But its current is ~17% discounted from the S&amp;P 500 and about 30% from the QQQ.</p><p>Finally, risks. If you recall from an earlier chart, SOXX charges an expense ratio of 0.4%, and QQQ charges a lower expense ratio of 0.2% only. The extra fee will always create a drag on SOXX (0.2% per year). The iShares Semiconductor ETF (NASDAQ:SOXX) has historically been traded at a premium relative to the overall market. For example, back in March 2022, SOXX was trading at a P/E of about 31.5x and SPDR S&P 500 Trust ETF (SPY) at about 26.5x according to Yahoo Finance data. However, recent corrections have brought SOXX P/E to the current level of 15.45x, about a 17% discount from the S&P 500’s 18.4x.And you will see next that the discount from the NASDAQ 100 index, represented by the Invesco QQQ ETF (NASDAQ:QQQ), is even larger. To wit, SOXX suffered a total loss of 18.6% YTD and QQQ about 22% as you can see from the following chart. Combined with earnings changes, the valuation of SOXX now stands at 15.45x and QQQ at 22.01x, a discount of almost 30%.Besides the valuation compression, the volatility has also become much quieter recently, adding another reason for considering a heavier bet on the tech sector. As you can see from the second chart below, the volatility index has subdued substantially YTD, decreasing from the 30+ level routinely seen at the earlier part of the year to the current level of 22.4x. To provide broader context, a volatility of 30 is at the top 93% percentile of historical volatility. While 22 is at about 71% percentile. The major reason for the quieter volatility is Fed’s recent rate movements and comments, which are consistent with market expectations and also provide clarity for the near term. And as detailed in our earlier article, when volatility is high, it’s a good idea to hunker down and vice versa.Against this backdrop, we will look at the pros and cons of SOXX and QQQ more closely next.Seeking AlphaYahoo FinanceSOXX vs QQQ: basic informationQQQ needs little introduction. It is one of the most popular funds tracking the Nasdaq-100 Index. However, as aforementioned, many investors are unaware that QQQ is not a pure-tech play because the NASDAQ 100 index tracks the largest NON-FINANCIAL companies listed on the Nasdaq and many of these companies are not tech companies. I will table this for now and come back to this point later.SOXX, in contrast, is a pure tech play completely concentrated in the semiconductor sector. As detailed in the fund description:The iShares Semiconductor ETF seeks to track the investment results of an index composed of U.S.-listed equities in the semiconductor sector. It provides exposure to U.S. companies that design, manufacture, and distribute semiconductors and targeted access to domestic semiconductor stocks. It is used to express a sector view.Source: ETF.comSOXX vs QQQ: Past performance and risksBoth the SOXX and QQQ funds have delivered handsome returns in the past as you can see from the chart below. SOXX has delivered an annual return of 10.12% since its inception in 2022, and QQQ has delivered a slightly higher CAGR of 11.5%. Both outperformed the S&P 500 by a good margin of about 2% to 3%.When compounded over the past decade, such an alpha has accumulated into a sizable difference in total return. With dividends reinvested, SOXX has delivered a total return of 720% and QQQ more than 930%, far higher than the S&P 500’s 525%.Although the downside is their price volatilities. We’ve already seen a glimpse of their price volatility in the short term in the previous section already in the past year. As you can see in the long term, both SOXX and QQQ have suffered much larger volatility than the S&P 500 too. And SOXX in particular has suffered by far the largest volatility. In terms of standard deviation, it's 27% is almost double that of the SP 500 (14%) and has also been higher than QQQ by about a whole 8%. In terms of worst-year performance, SOXX suffered a 51% loss (which will take more than a 100% rally to breakeven), which was 10% more than QQQ and 14% more than SP 500. And finally, in terms of maximum drawdown, SOXX’s 62% maximum drawdown (which takes a 163% rally to break even) is truly nerve-wracking. In contrast, both QQQ and SP 500 were in the 50% range.And next, we will see that the root cause of the volatilities is in their fundamental indexing methods.Portfolio VisualizerSOXX vs QQQ: More concentrated bet on TechAs aforementioned, QQQ tracks the largest NON-FINANCIAL companies listed on the Nasdaq and many of these companies are not tech companies. As you can see from the chart below, information technology represents 49.8% of QQQ’s total assets, followed by communication services at 17.7%, and consumer discretionary at 14.9%. Admittedly, some of the companies in communication services and consumer discretionary are also tech companies. Nonetheless, information technology only represents a minor majority of the farm. Note that QQQ also holds a good portion of consumer staples, healthcare, industrials, and utilities.SOXX and QQ fund fact sheetsSOXX, in contrast, is a pure tech play. The fund is completely invested in the tech sector, especially the semiconductor sector. As you can see, it invests more than 79.1% of its total assets in semiconductor stocks and more than 20.6% in semiconductor equipment. Furthermore, its holdings are also more concentrated. SOXX holds a total of 32 stocks and QQQ about 100.You can also see the concentration and composition more vividly by looking at their top ten holdings. One of their top 10 holdings overlaps: Nvidia (NVDA). But NVDA represents an 8.3% allocation in SOXX, in contrast to only 3.28% in QQQ. Also note that QQQ’s top holdings include stables like Costco (COST) and PepsiCo (PEP), while all SOXX holdings are semiconductor stocks.To me, this is key for SOXX’s long-term performance. It places concentrated bet one of the most innovative sectors: information technologies. For this reason and the current valuation, I see favorable odds for SOXX to keep outperforming S&P 500 in the long term. I also see good odds for it to outperform QQQ too, as to be detailed next.But again, before we turn the page, investors need to be aware of the volatility risks and to pick the right fund for their timeframe and risk tolerance.Source: ETF.comSOXX vs QQQ: valuation comparisonAs aforementioned, SOXX has historically been traded at a premium relative to both S&P 500 and QQQ because of its growth potential. However, recent price corrections have brought its valuation to a discount. SOXX’s current P/E of 15.45x is ~17% discounted from the S&P 500. And as the next table shows, the discount from QQQ is even larger.The price-to-earnings ratio of SOXX is 15.4x only, below QQQ’s 22.0x by about a whopping 30%. Other metrics paint the same picture. The price-to-cash flow ratio of SOXX is 19.5x, below QQQ’s 22.8x by about 15%. And price-to-book value ratio of SOXX is 7.13x, below QQQ’s 8.93x by about 20%, despite SOXX’s higher ROE of 46% vs 40% of QQQ. Finally, do not be alarmed by SOXX’s higher price-to-sales ratio. Its price-to-sales ratio of 6.23x is higher than QQQ by about 35%, but its net margin is higher by 90%.AuthorFinal thoughts and risksThere are good reasons to start considering the tech sector now. QQQ has never been a bad choice with its low fee, broad market representation, and excellent liquidity. However, more aggressive investors with a long timeframe might want to consider SOXX also given the valuation correction and the quieter volatility ahead. SOXX has historically enjoyed a valuation premium over the overall market. But its current is ~17% discounted from the S&P 500 and about 30% from the QQQ.Finally, risks. If you recall from an earlier chart, SOXX charges an expense ratio of 0.4%, and QQQ charges a lower expense ratio of 0.2% only. The extra fee will always create a drag on SOXX (0.2% per year). Here&#39;s why.</p><h2>Being selective is key for Offerpad</h2><p>Since 2019, Zillow has been on a home-buying binge, purchasing 26,014 houses -- in some cases, multiple-home estates -- with the intention of reselling them quickly for a profit. This strategy is great when real estate prices are rising across the board, but when pockets of the market go soft, it can result in significant losses.</p><p>Zillow recently listed up to 1,000 of its homes for sale in its five largest markets, 64% of which were reportedly priced below what it paid for them. And in Phoenix, Arizona, up to 93% of its properties are slated to be sold at a loss. In the recent third quarter, Zillow&#39;s iBuying segment lost $244 million and erased all of the gross profit the segment had made for the entire year.</p><p>Part of the issue is Zillow&#39;s broad geographical footprint. It operates in, and therefore had to carefully track, up to 35 markets across the U.S. Offerpad, on the other hand, operates in 17 markets. Where Zillow&#39;s iBuying average gross profit per home peaked at $18,665, Offerpad&#39;s average peak (so far) is $31,500 per home in the second quarter of 2021.</p><p>It highlights the importance of being selective, because like any asset class, home prices constantly fluctuate, and being on the wrong side can be catastrophic. For Offerpad, now that its largest competitor has moved out of the way, it has an opportunity to grow its market share in the higher-quality markets Zillow has left behind.</p><h2>A surge in revenue</h2><p>By the close of 2021, Offerpad expects it will have sold up to 6,000 homes for the year, driving a record revenue result. In the recent third quarter, it actually increased its 2021 revenue guidance by $100 million. By comparison, and despite all of its issues, Zillow&#39;s stock trades at a multiple of 2.1 based on estimated 2021 revenue. That means Offerpad&#39;s stock would need to double from here just to trade in line with its tech-real estate peer.</p><p>If Offerpad meets analysts&#39; expectations and generates $3.53 billion in revenue next year, its multiple will shrink further to just 0.4 (assuming its stock price remains the same). That makes its recent 68% decline in share price look like an attractive opportunity going into 2022.</p><p>Offerpad is expected to post a loss overall for 2021, but JMP Securities expects it will close out 2021 with a fourth-quarter profit of $0.35 per share.
