Some of the officials recently began signaling their desire to start reducing the size of increases after this week and to potentially stop lifting rates early next year so they can see the effects of their moves.</p><p>Those officials and several private-sector economists have warned of growing risks that the Fed will raise rates too much and cause an unnecessarily sharp slowdown. Until June, the Fed hadn’t raised interest rates by 0.75 point, or 75 basis points, since 1994.</p><p>“They have to think about calibration at this meeting. You’re trying to cool down an economy, not throw it into a deep freeze,” said Diane Swonk, chief economist at KPMG.</p><p>Fed officials widely supported the supersize rate increases this summer because they were playing catch-up. Inflation has been running close to 40-year highs, but interest rates were pinned near zero until March. Debate over how much more to raise rates could intensify as they reach levels more likely to restrain spending, hiring and investment. The fed-funds rate influences other borrowing costs throughout the economy, including rates on credit cards, mortgages and car loans.</p><p>“They do need to slow the pace. Let’s keep in mind, 50 basis points is fast; 75 basis points is really fast,” said Ellen Meade, an economist at Duke University who is a former senior adviser at the Fed.</p><p>December would be a natural time to slow the pace of rate increases because officials could use new projections at that meeting to show they expect to reach a higher peak or terminal interest rate than they had previously anticipated, she said. The debate over the speed of increases could obscure a more important one around how high rates ultimately rise. “Going faster now is about raising the terminal rate,” Ms. Meade said.</p><p>But some analysts say it will be difficult for the Fed to dial back the pace of rate increases in December because they expect inflation to continue to run hotter than other analysts forecast. Fed officials had expected inflation to decline this year, but that outlook has been in vain so far. They responded by targeting a higher destination for the fed-funds rate than they projected earlier in the year, resulting in the longer-than-anticipated string of 0.75-point rate rises.</p><p>Officials at their September meeting projected that they would need to raise the rate to at least 4.6% by early next year. “If you have broad agreement on that and inflation keeps coming in higher than expected, it makes sense to get to that peak rate sooner,” said Matthew Luzzetti, chief U.S. economist at Deutsche Bank.</p><p>Analysts at Deutsche Bank, UBS, Credit Suisse and Nomura Securities expect the Fed to follow this week’s 0.75-point rate rise with an increase of the same size in December.</p><p>Meanwhile, analysts at Bank of America, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, and Evercore ISI see the Fed dialing back the pace of rate rises in December with a 0.5-point increase.</p><p>Economic data released since the Fed’s September meeting have been mixed. While domestic demand has slowed and the housing market is entering a sharp downturn, the job market has remained strong and inflation pressures have stayed elevated. Recent earnings reports have shown strong consumer demand and pricing increases.</p><p>Officials will see two more months of economic reports before their mid-December meeting, including on hiring and inflation. “Even if Powell provides guidance at his press conference, it won’t involve a commitment. That’s something investors haven’t seen in quite some time. Shares are down just 2.5% so far this year and are only 11% off the all-time high. By contrast, the<b>S&amp;P 500</b>is down about 23% so far in 2022 and is 23.5% below its all-time high.</p><p>Despite turmoil in bonds, stocks and now currencies, J&amp;J continues to chug along well. Admittedly, this multinational company will likely experience somecurrency pressuresthat eat into its margins. However, by and large, its business has been consistent.</p><p>Estimates may call for low single digit earnings and revenue growth this year. Still, investors are accumulating this stock for its dependability and durability. Case in point, the company justannounceda new $5 billion buyback plan and reaffirmed its full-year outlook.</p><p>Admittedly, there’s nothing too incredible about its outlook (as consensus estimates suggest), but to come out at a time like this and commit $5 billion to the buyback says something. That is, JNJ management is talking the talk and walking the walk.</p><p>Then there’s the fact that Johnson &amp; Johnson hasraised its dividend in 59 straight years. That’s another example of discipline and consistency.</p><h2>Cardinal Health (CAH)</h2><p>Healthcare is great because regardless of the economy or stock market, the population needs to take care of itself. If you have a medical emergency, you’re going to the hospital regardless of where the<b>S&amp;P 500</b>is trading.</p><p>Like JNJ,<b>Cardinal Health</b>(NYSE:<b><u>CAH</u></b>) has found itself in a favorable position. The stock hit new multi-year highs earlier this month and is down “just” 9.5% from those highs after the recent pullback. Further, shares are actually<i>up</i>27.5% on the year.</p><p>Cardinal Health is fresh off a monstrous reaction to earnings, afterrevenue grewmore than 10% year over year and beat expectations by more than $2 billion. The stockyields 2.95%and management hasraised its dividend for the last 27 years.</p><p>Lastly, analysts expect about 9% revenue growth this year, and while they expect just 4% growth in FY 2024, consensus earnings expectations call for 4.3% growth this year but a huge acceleration up to 17% growth in FY 2024.</p><h2>Enphase Energy (ENPH)</h2><p><b>Enphase Energy</b>(NYSE:<b><u>ENPH</u></b>) continues to deliver the goods.</p><p>While the stock market is struggling near its 2022 lows, solar stocks are, for the most part, hanging in there. In fact, most continue to trade well in what has become a rare combination of strong fundamentals and bullish technicals.</p><p>The bullish party really got started in late July, when Enphase beat on earnings and revenue estimates, while growing sales 67% year over year. Then guidance came well above analysts’ expectations.It was a lights out quarterwith <b>First Solar</b>(NASDAQ:<b><u>FSLR</u></b>)delivering dazzling earnings results, as well.</p><p>As it stands now, Enphase is forecast to grow revenue 62% this year and 33.5% next year. On the earnings front, analysts expect 70% growth this year and 22% growth next year. Admittedly, this multinational company will likely experience somecurrency pressuresthat eat into its margins. However, by and large, its business has been consistent.Estimates may call for low single digit earnings and revenue growth this year. Still, investors are accumulating this stock for its dependability and durability. Case in point, the company justannounceda new $5 billion buyback plan and reaffirmed its full-year outlook.Admittedly, there’s nothing too incredible about its outlook (as consensus estimates suggest), but to come out at a time like this and commit $5 billion to the buyback says something. That is, JNJ management is talking the talk and walking the walk.Then there’s the fact that Johnson & Johnson hasraised its dividend in 59 straight years. That’s another example of discipline and consistency.Cardinal Health (CAH)Healthcare is great because regardless of the economy or stock market, the population needs to take care of itself. If you have a medical emergency, you’re going to the hospital regardless of where theS&P 500is trading.Like JNJ,Cardinal Health(NYSE:CAH) has found itself in a favorable position. The stock hit new multi-year highs earlier this month and is down “just” 9.5% from those highs after the recent pullback. Further, shares are actuallyup27.5% on the year.Cardinal Health is fresh off a monstrous reaction to earnings, afterrevenue grewmore than 10% year over year and beat expectations by more than $2 billion. The stockyields 2.95%and management hasraised its dividend for the last 27 years.Lastly, analysts expect about 9% revenue growth this year, and while they expect just 4% growth in FY 2024, consensus earnings expectations call for 4.3% growth this year but a huge acceleration up to 17% growth in FY 2024.Enphase Energy (ENPH)Enphase Energy(NYSE:ENPH) continues to deliver the goods.While the stock market is struggling near its 2022 lows, solar stocks are, for the most part, hanging in there. In fact, most continue to trade well in what has become a rare combination of strong fundamentals and bullish technicals.The bullish party really got started in late July, when Enphase beat on earnings and revenue estimates, while growing sales 67% year over year. Then guidance came well above analysts’ expectations.It was a lights out quarterwith First Solar(NASDAQ:FSLR)delivering dazzling earnings results, as well.As it stands now, Enphase is forecast to grow revenue 62% this year and 33.5% next year. On the earnings front, analysts expect 70% growth this year and 22% growth next year. Which is more important: Tesla&#39;s innovation or its valuation? In other words, if you&#39;re looking to invest in stocks as the market swoons, which looks like a better buy, Tesla or the entire <b>Nasdaq</b>?</p><h2>The case for Tesla</h2><p>According to data collected by InsideEVs, Tesla is still registering more all-electric cars than any other manufacturer, with more than 564,000 vehicles registered in the first half of 2022. In addition to its market share lead, Tesla expects that its investment in its Gigafactories will dramatically lower its costs when it comes to batteries. Since batteries are such an important component of both an electric car&#39;s cost and its range, that investment should help Tesla have a cost advantage over other manufacturers.</p><p>In addition, since Tesla has <i>always </i>been an all-electric vehicle manufacturer, it doesn&#39;t have the legacy costs and structures that traditional gas-powered-car companies have in place. Those structures were built up over decades to optimize for manufacturing gas-powered cars. While that helps with scale and efficiency, those same factors often get in the way of helping a company be more nimble and change with the times. That may hinder other car companies&#39; ability to play catch-up with Tesla on electric cars.</p><p>A cost advantage on batteries plus a business model built from the ground up for electric vehicles certainly puts Tesla in a great spot as the world shifts to a higher proportion of electric cars.</p><h2>The case against Tesla</h2><p>Of course, Tesla faces challenges in the electric-vehicle space as well. First, it is losing its early mover advantage. While that InsideEVs report still had Tesla in the lead when it came to electric-vehicle registrations, it also indicated that Tesla&#39;s market share of EVs was 19% -- and shrinking. That means competition is getting a stronger foothold -- and gaining their <i>own </i>economies of scale to improve their ability to effectively operate in the electric car space.</p><p>Second, according to the JD Power Initial Quality Survey for 2022, Tesla&#39;s initial quality is below average in the automobile industry. It scored 226 problems per 100 vehicles, versus 180 problems per 100 vehicles for the typical car. In a world where electric cars are premium-priced to gas-powered ones to cover those battery costs, having below-average initial quality makes it tough to command a premium price. That&#39;ll be especially true as consumer choice continues to increase as competition intensifies.</p><p>Then, of course, there&#39;s Tesla&#39;s valuation. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, worldwide car sales were around 74.9 million units in 2019, up from an average around 71 million throughout the 2010s. Tesla&#39;s $862.7 billion market cap gives it a price tag of around $11,500 <i>per</i> <i>car sold by all manufacturers in 2019</i>, worldwide. To justify that kind of valuation, Tesla would need to become a dominant player across the entire industry, not just a fast mover (and one losing share) in just a segment of it.</p><p>Is it possible that Tesla could get there? Maybe, but its shares are trading as though that has already happened. As a result, I&#39;m not sure where future shareholder returns would come from, even if the company does reach that pinnacle of success.</p><h2>What about the entire Nasdaq?</h2><p>On the flip side, the Nasdaq as a whole currently trades at about 22 times the trailing earnings of its constituent companies, thanks to a fairly substantial market decline in 2022. While a little higher than a value investor would like to see, it&#39;s not that far out of whack with its pre-pandemic trends .</p><p>In addition, the <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/ONEQ\">Fidelity Nasdaq Composite Index ETF </a>, which attempts to track the Nasdaq, offers investors a chance to buy the index for a reasonably low 0.21% expense ratio. That makes buying shares in the entire Nasdaq about as easy as buying shares in Tesla, without having to sacrifice a huge part of your overall potential return to overhead fees.</p><h2>Which is a better buy?</h2><p>At a lower valuation -- 22 times for the Nasdaq composite, versus 90 times earnings for Tesla -- the Nasdaq wins out as a better buy on valuation. When it comes to business prospects, Tesla clearly has room to grow as the electric-vehicle market does. With its stock price already reflecting the anticipated success from that growth, however, it&#39;s hard to justify paying the premium price over the overall index.</p><p>Overall, the decline in the overall market has opened up an opportunity to where the entire Nasdaq looks like a better buy at the moment than Tesla does. As it released the iPhone in 2007, it began raking in amounts of money most other companies can only dream of and now they bring in billions from things like their Services segments, which is larger than some other companies bring in altogether.</p><p>But this past year there&#39;s been a warning sign I was looking out for a long time - as they shed their cash reserves for share buybacks and other compensation, they&#39;re losing their edge in the amount of investment and interest income they generate and now, for the very first time, they are paying more in interest expense than they&#39;re bringing in.</p><p>This in and of itself isn&#39;t all that bad considering they rake in about $100 billion in net income while paying just shy of $3 billion annually in interest expense. But with the lack of new innovative products, they&#39;ve been relying more on telecom companies&#39; incentive to sell their new iPhone than organic excitement.</p><p>Let&#39;s dive into the issues I see.</p><h3>Debt Load &amp; Interest Expense</h3><p>Beginning in 2013, the company started taking on long-term and short-term debt while interest rates were near zero to finance their operations while conserving cash overseas and investing it to bring in interest, which more than covered the interest expense on the low-interest debt. Since then, the debt has ballooned from about $16 billion to just shy of $110 billion, which was down to about $95 billion as of their latest financial reporting.</p><p>But then the Federal Reserve started raising interest rates and the company began paying more in interest expense. After the repatriation holiday in 2017, Apple brought back a big amount of their overseas cash which was being invested and spent the vast majority of it for share buybacks and other shareholder-friendly activities, which lowered their interest income.</p><p>Even though, as I mentioned earlier, the company has reduced their debt from $110 billion to $95 billion, their interest expense for the same time period increased from $2.6 billion to $2.8 billion. Although these numbers pale in comparison to their income and revenue generation, it&#39;s somewhat concerning in the long run given where interest rates are headed and the lower cash reserves the company has.</p><h3>Cash, Investments and Interest Income</h3><p>The company&#39;s cash and equivalents and short-term investments have been rising for the longest time as the company accumulated cash, but over the past few years, the company announced that it intended at getting to a cash-neutral position and spending it to fund share buybacks and other shareholder-friendly activities.</p><p>Apple had more than $100 billion in cash and short-term investment in September 2017, which decreased to under $50 billion as of today.</p><p>The more interesting part of this is the company&#39;s investments have been shrinking after the repatriation holiday back in 2017 allowed companies to bring back cash at record low tax rates, which were mostly used for share buybacks.</p><p>Apple had almost $200 billion of long-term investments in September 2017, which then slowly went down and hovers around $100 billion.</p><h3>The Result: All About The Interest Rates</h3><p>This resulted in the company&#39;s interest income to fall as their interest expense is expected to continue and climb:</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/9209feae93f89b97d8170d6ae749a21d\" tg-width=\"647\" tg-height=\"330\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/>During the COVID-19 pandemic, interest rates went back to zero due to control measures by the Federal Reserve. But now, interest rates are expected to climb to records as the Federal Reserve tries to stem inflation. This means, I believe, that as the company&#39;s debt load has been increasing, they will be paying a big chunk more in expenses this year relative to last.</p><p>In the most recent reporting quarter, the company saw an 8.12% increase in interest expense relative to the same period last year as a result of the federal funds rate increasing from 0% to 0.75% in 2 stages throughout their reporting time period.</p><p>Given the fact that the federal funds rate has increased to 3% since then, I expect the company&#39;s interest expense to be higher by about 35% relative to last year, leading them to potentially pay over $3.5 billion for fiscal 2022.</p><p>On the face of it, this isn&#39;t all that bad, considering the fact that the company made about $100 billion last year in net income. But then there&#39;s the whole sales growth thing, which has me slightly more concerned than last time.</p><h3>Sales Growth To Underperform</h3><p>There are a few factors that make it hard for me to see Apple meeting the current sales growth projections.</p><p>The first is that they&#39;re way too reliant on telecom companies. These offer a free iPhone with a trade-in and some plan commitments, which is one of the major incentives that folks use in order to upgrade since the new iPhone has little improvement over the one before it, which was little improved over the one before it and so on.</p><p>While there&#39;s little to make me believe that telecom companies will stop this incentive altogether, I do think that there&#39;s a limit to the amount of cycles they&#39;ll do this as they shift to focus on customer retention and not only customer transfers or initiation. We&#39;ve seen this with other incentives - they take place for a business cycle or two and then shift to offering other services in place. If, and it&#39;s a big if, the iPhone 15 is to the iPhone 14 as the iPhone 14 is to the iPhone 13, I don&#39;t think the reception will be as good without these incentives to give Apple millions and millions of sales.</p><p>This is somewhat confirmed by the reception the phone had in China. New iPhone sales had a lukewarm reception in the company&#39;s second-largest market, where it&#39;s relying on for future sales growth, which doesn&#39;t have as many free upgrade offers. This is a result of individuals not wanting to spend all that money to upgrade for the sake of upgrading as there&#39;s little improvement outside the camera, which is already pro-level quality.</p><p>With these 2 main factors, I just don&#39;t see the company generating any meaningful revenues for the next 2-3 years. The added fact that they&#39;re spending more and more on research &amp; development each year with little to show for it (so far) is added to this underperformance projection by me.</p><h3>By The Numbers: Sales &amp; EPS</h3><p>The aforementioned factors lead me to believe that the company will likely underperform their current sales and EPS projections, which leads to them being fairly to slightly overvalued. This on its own means that the company may constitute a poor investment choice, but especially since we may be heading into a recession - the company&#39;s shares can underperform the broader market during that time period, which can be bad for investors.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ea69a11622481942c2d350d262e0d8ec\" tg-width=\"632\" tg-height=\"157\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/>With these figures not yet accounting for the already-lackluster reception in China of the new iPhone, I believe that and the aforementioned overall future underperformance means that the company will be seeing a sub-3% average annual growth rate throughout the 2025 time period.</p><p>Given my earlier points about,</p><p>1 - Increased sales through telecom companies&#39; incentives means lower gross margins.</p><p>2 - Increased interest expense, lower interest income, SG&amp;A expenses and R&amp;D expenses means that the profit margin will be lower than in previous years.</p><p>3 - Lower than projected sales growth on the higher margin iPhones means margins will be lower.</p><p>I believe that the company&#39;s EPS growth rate will be lower than sales growth rate. This is overvaluing the company if their true growth rate is around the 2% to 3% mark through 2025, in my opinion.</p><p>This means that the company is likely slightly overvalued at current levels, and we shouldn&#39;t expect them to make any material gains in share price over the next 2-3 years. That’s something investors haven’t seen in quite some time. While many stocks are getting crushed, it does create an opportunity for patient buyers, especially with top blue-chip stocks to buy.</p><p>While some may say it’s irresponsible to buy in an environment like this, I think it’s irresponsible for long-term investors<i>not</i>to be buying. At the very least, investors should be putting together a list of stocks they want to own and at what price they want to own them at.</p><p>I’ve been doing just that, accumulating a list of companies that have high-quality businesses but have seen their stock price come under pressure. Shares are down just 2.5% so far this year and are only 11% off the all-time high. By contrast, the<b>S&amp;P 500</b>is down about 23% so far in 2022 and is 23.5% below its all-time high.</p><p>Despite turmoil in bonds, stocks and now currencies, J&amp;J continues to chug along well. Admittedly, this multinational company will likely experience somecurrency pressuresthat eat into its margins. However, by and large, its business has been consistent.</p><p>Estimates may call for low single digit earnings and revenue growth this year. Still, investors are accumulating this stock for its dependability and durability. Case in point, the company justannounceda new $5 billion buyback plan and reaffirmed its full-year outlook.</p><p>Admittedly, there’s nothing too incredible about its outlook (as consensus estimates suggest), but to come out at a time like this and commit $5 billion to the buyback says something. That is, JNJ management is talking the talk and walking the walk.</p><p>Then there’s the fact that Johnson &amp; Johnson hasraised its dividend in 59 straight years. That’s another example of discipline and consistency.</p><h2>Cardinal Health (CAH)</h2><p>Healthcare is great because regardless of the economy or stock market, the population needs to take care of itself. If you have a medical emergency, you’re going to the hospital regardless of where the<b>S&amp;P 500</b>is trading.</p><p>Like JNJ,<b>Cardinal Health</b>(NYSE:<b><u>CAH</u></b>) has found itself in a favorable position. The stock hit new multi-year highs earlier this month and is down “just” 9.5% from those highs after the recent pullback. Further, shares are actually<i>up</i>27.5% on the year.</p><p>Cardinal Health is fresh off a monstrous reaction to earnings, afterrevenue grewmore than 10% year over year and beat expectations by more than $2 billion. The stockyields 2.95%and management hasraised its dividend for the last 27 years.</p><p>Lastly, analysts expect about 9% revenue growth this year, and while they expect just 4% growth in FY 2024, consensus earnings expectations call for 4.3% growth this year but a huge acceleration up to 17% growth in FY 2024.</p><h2>Enphase Energy (ENPH)</h2><p><b>Enphase Energy</b>(NYSE:<b><u>ENPH</u></b>) continues to deliver the goods.</p><p>While the stock market is struggling near its 2022 lows, solar stocks are, for the most part, hanging in there. In fact, most continue to trade well in what has become a rare combination of strong fundamentals and bullish technicals.</p><p>The bullish party really got started in late July, when Enphase beat on earnings and revenue estimates, while growing sales 67% year over year. Then guidance came well above analysts’ expectations.It was a lights out quarterwith <b>First Solar</b>(NASDAQ:<b><u>FSLR</u></b>)delivering dazzling earnings results, as well.</p><p>As it stands now, Enphase is forecast to grow revenue 62% this year and 33.5% next year. On the earnings front, analysts expect 70% growth this year and 22% growth next year.
