TSLA stock still seems to be in a race to the bottom, but Wood is sticking to her modus operandi.</p><p>Per <i>Bloomberg, </i>Wood recently doubled down on the beaten down electric vehicle (EV) producer, adding more than 176,000 shares. As noted, she made multiple purchases throughout the second half of 2022. Just before the end of the year, she also stated that TSLA still has “miles to run.” That interview took place before Tesla reported disappointing fourth-quarter deliveries, but Wood’s recent purchases make it clear she stands by the assessment.</p><p>Here’s what investors should know moving forward.</p><h2>What’s Happening With TSLA Stock?</h2><p>After falling Tuesday, TSLA stock is back in the green by 5% on Wednesday. This likely isn’t because of Wood’s purchases. However, it does warrant a closer look as investors ponder the future of the company.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/7e6b7abdcfaecb7cc81f2988931612d8\" tg-width=\"837\" tg-height=\"665\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/></p><p>Shares of Tesla have been in decline ever since CEO Elon Musk turned his attention from Tesla to <b>Twitter</b>. After Q4 deliveries fell short of Wall Street expectations, it’s also harder for many investors to remain optimistic. Analysts like Itay Michaeli of Citi have issued bearish takes as a result.</p><p>This appears to have only enticed Wood to keep buying, however. Anyone who follows her exchange-traded funds (ETFs) knows Wood likes to go long on beaten down tech stocks as they plunge. Some of her other top holdings include <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/ZM\">Zoom</a> and <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/EXAS\">Exact Sciences</a>, both of which are recovering from a turbulent 2022. Buying on the dip remains the core principle of her investing philosophy — and Tesla has been on a major dip for months. Cathie Wood’s recent buy, worth roughly $19 million, came as shares fell by 12%. <i>Seeking Alpha</i> reports:</p><blockquote>“Wood added a total of 176,112 shares of Tesla to Ark Invest, with her flagship fund <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/ARKK\">ARK Innovation ETF</a> […] taking on the lion’s share of 144,776 shares. An additional 31,336 shares were added to Wood’s ARK Autonomous Technology &amp; Robotics ETF.”</blockquote><p><i>Seeking Alpha</i> also notes that both ETFs suffered significant losses throughout 2022, with the <b>ARK Innovation ETF</b> and <b>ARK Autonomous &amp; Robotics ETF</b> falling 67.5% and 47.5%, respectively. However, both of these funds are back in the green today alongside TSLA stock. This can be attributed to positive momentum as markets shake off yesterday’s volatility.</p><p>Still, although Wood’s faith in Tesla may be interpreted as a positive sign, that doesn’t change the fact that high interest rates are casting a shadow over growth stocks. For plenty of experts, skepticism and increasingly bearish outlooks are abound.</p><h2>The Road Ahead</h2><p>Until Elon Musk turns his attention back to Tesla and shows investors that he’s focused on helping the EV company grow, it will be hard for anyone except contrarian investors to stand behind TSLA stock. Even as Wood continues buying TSLA stock, there’s no question that uncertainty is rising. <i>The New York Times</i> reports that, following the recent large-scale selloff, Tesla investors are bracing for a difficult year ahead. This represents an average annual increase of about 13.15%. Furthermore, the company has a great gross margin, sitting at 38.93%. Also, the company&#39;s profit margin is a healthy 22.31% and the company continues to grow its earnings.</p><p>It is important to mention the 5 categories Apple has to generate revenue. The first is iPhone, which accounts for the majority of Apple&#39;s revenue at 52.5%. Next is services, which includes products such as Apple Music, AppleCare, and others. This segment accounts for about 18.7% of the company&#39;s revenue. Third is accessories, which includes products such as AirPods, Beats, and Apple TV. This segment accounts for 10.5% of revenue. The final 2 segments are Mac and iPad and account for 9.6% and 8.7% of revenue, respectively.</p><p>Apple also recently reported Q2 2022 earnings and delivered a great report. The company&#39;s iPhone, Mac, and iPad segments outperformed expectations. The company also raised its dividend and increased its share buyback program. Overall, the company&#39;s income statement is strong and shows Apple is in a great position to generate revenue and earnings.</p><h2>The Balance Sheet is Strong, but the Current Ratio Could be Worked on</h2><p>Apple has a generally strong balance sheet, but could work on its current ratio. Now that the pandemic is starting to fade, the demand for the products from these companies is starting to decrease, meaning slowed hiring, or even layoffs, are likely imminent.</p><p>Another thing to note is the valuations that many tech companies are trading at. Tesla (TSLA) is currently worth over 6 times the combined value of General Motors (GM) and Ford (F). As for Apple, it took decades for the company to reach $1 trillion in value. However, the company has been able to triple from that in less than 4 years. With valuations at all-time highs, many are saying a large pullback is coming in the near future.</p><h2>If a Recession Does Happen, it May Not be All Bad for Apple</h2><p>About 2 weeks ago, Deutsche Bank was the first major bank to warn that a recession is coming. They claimed that the federal reserve is behind the curve with inflation and that it will need to take aggressive actions to keep it from going vastly higher. With more and more predicting that a recession is coming soon, Apple may become a haven for investors. When a recession hits, investors are much less likely to buy speculative assets and companies and usually shift their capital into safe companies while they are at cheap prices. This means that assets such as cryptocurrencies, NFTs, and start-ups will see money pour out of them and into companies like Apple.</p><p>Also, Apple&#39;s previously mentioned cash position gives them a great cushion if a recession comes. The company can continue to invest and innovate while many of its smaller competitors struggle to survive. With less competition being in the picture, Apple&#39;s already recession-resistant products will continue to do well. Apple&#39;s two largest segments, iPhone and Services, are recession-resistant as many are still willing to buy a new phone or not cancel their music subscription even when money is tight. As competition starts to dwindle during a recession, especially in the Services segment, Apple will likely see stable or even growing fundamentals during a recession.</p><h2>Supply Chain Issues Continue to Cause Trouble</h2><p>A continuous theme in the market has been ongoing supply chain issues. Recently, Apple executives warned that issues with the supply chain could cause up to $8 billion in increased costs in the current quarter, mainly due to shortages and factory shutdowns in China.</p><p>China&#39;s zero tolerance policies could mean trouble for Apple if the country shuts down. China saw a huge spike in cases in March that continued into late April. Using the company&#39;s WACC of 10.83% as the discount rate in a DCF, a fair value of $98.05 per share can be calculated. This could mean that Apple is overvalued by about 36%. If <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> wanted to use a discount rate of 9.5%, which is about a 5% premium over corporate bonds, the company&#39;s fair value would calculate to $117.34 per share. This would mean the stock is overvalued by about 23.4%.</p><p>A relative valuation points to slightly better news than a DCF with the WACC as the discount rate, but it is still not ideal. This represents an average annual increase of about 13.15%. Furthermore, the company has a great gross margin, sitting at 38.93%. Also, the company's profit margin is a healthy 22.31% and the company continues to grow its earnings.It is important to mention the 5 categories Apple has to generate revenue. The first is iPhone, which accounts for the majority of Apple's revenue at 52.5%. Next is services, which includes products such as Apple Music, AppleCare, and others. This segment accounts for about 18.7% of the company's revenue. Third is accessories, which includes products such as AirPods, Beats, and Apple TV. This segment accounts for 10.5% of revenue. Tesla (TSLA) is currently worth over 6 times the combined value of General Motors (GM) and Ford (F). As for Apple, it took decades for the company to reach $1 trillion in value. However, the company has been able to triple from that in less than 4 years. With valuations at all-time highs, many are saying a large pullback is coming in the near future.If a Recession Does Happen, it May Not be All Bad for AppleAbout 2 weeks ago, Deutsche Bank was the first major bank to warn that a recession is coming. They claimed that the federal reserve is behind the curve with inflation and that it will need to take aggressive actions to keep it from going vastly higher. With more and more predicting that a recession is coming soon, Apple may become a haven for investors. When a recession hits, investors are much less likely to buy speculative assets and companies and usually shift their capital into safe companies while they are at cheap prices. This means that assets such as cryptocurrencies, NFTs, and start-ups will see money pour out of them and into companies like Apple.Also, Apple's previously mentioned cash position gives them a great cushion if a recession comes. The company can continue to invest and innovate while many of its smaller competitors struggle to survive. With less competition being in the picture, Apple's already recession-resistant products will continue to do well. Apple's two largest segments, iPhone and Services, are recession-resistant as many are still willing to buy a new phone or not cancel their music subscription even when money is tight. As competition starts to dwindle during a recession, especially in the Services segment, Apple will likely see stable or even growing fundamentals during a recession.Supply Chain Issues Continue to Cause TroubleA continuous theme in the market has been ongoing supply chain issues. Recently, Apple executives warned that issues with the supply chain could cause up to $8 billion in increased costs in the current quarter, mainly due to shortages and factory shutdowns in China.China's zero tolerance policies could mean trouble for Apple if the country shuts down. China saw a huge spike in cases in March that continued into late April. However, cases are now on the decline.Covid-19 Cases in China (Our World in Data)If cases continue to decrease, the risk of a shutdown in China is also going to decrease. This means Apple may actually incur costs of only about $4 billion or less due to supply chain issues.ValuationWhen valuing Apple stock, a DCF and relative valuation don't point in good directions. Using the company's WACC of 10.83% as the discount rate in a DCF, a fair value of $98.05 per share can be calculated. This could mean that Apple is overvalued by about 36%. If one wanted to use a discount rate of 9.5%, which is about a 5% premium over corporate bonds, the company's fair value would calculate to $117.34 per share. This would mean the stock is overvalued by about 23.4%.A relative valuation points to slightly better news than a DCF with the WACC as the discount rate, but it is still not ideal. By using the industry average ratios for EV/Revenue, EV/EBITDA, P/E, and P/S and multiplying them by 2023 analyst estimates, a fair value for Apple stock can be calculated as $101.28 per share. The industry is growing quickly, up 26% year over year from 2020, and is going after a gigantic market opportunity in the worldwide car market. But just because these stocks are in a large, growing industry doesn&#39;t mean they will be great investments over the next decade. Just ask <b>Cisco Systems</b> investors who bought stock in 1999 and 2000.</p><p>Are electric vehicle stocks overhyped? Yes. Let me explain why.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/90344f91dac6378d78934846de60ce59\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"465\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p><h2>Growth is strong, and the market opportunity is massive</h2><p>To start out, let&#39;s give some context around the global opportunity in electric vehicles and the overall automotive industry. In 2021, it is estimated that 6.4 million electric vehicles (EVs) were sold around the world, of which 4 million of these were all-electric and 2.4 million plug-in hybrids. That total number is up 26% from 2020.</p><p>In 2022, analysts are actually expecting this growth to accelerate due to the number of models being available in the U.S. jumping from 62 to 100. If that is the case, global annual sales for electric vehicles should hit 10 million in the near future. For reference, 66 million total cars are estimated to have been sold around the world in 2021.</p><p>Those are all high-level numbers, but what about the financial opportunity? Assuming an average selling price of $25,000, 10 million EV sales would equate to $250 billion in annual sales. At 50 million EVs, which assumes they take over the majority of the auto market, that equates to $1.25 trillion in sales. Clearly, the opportunity is massive from a revenue standpoint.</p><h2>Margins will be low</h2><p>While the revenue opportunity for EVs is large, these manufacturing businesses also have low margins. For example, let&#39;s look at <b>Toyota </b>(NYSE:TM), the largest automaker in the world, with an estimated 8.5% market share in 2019. Over the last 12 months, the company has brought in $281 billion in revenue. On that revenue, only $31 billion turned into operating income, or an 11% operating margin.</p><p>Tesla, the biggest pure-play EV maker, is seeing just shy of 10% operating margins on $47 billion in revenue. Given the reduction in manufacturing complications of a battery pack versus an internal combustion engine, EV makers may achieve better operating margins than 11% at scale. But they still require bending metal to succeed, so the likelihood they will be much higher than 11% on average over the long term seems unlikely.</p><p>What&#39;s more, automotive businesses require tons of capital expenditures relative to their sales just to stay afloat. For example, Toyota spent almost $35 billion on capital investments over the last 12 months. Given its profit margins, that makes it very difficult for the company to return excess cash to shareholders -- which is the <i>only</i> driver of shareholder value in the long run. This is why Toyota&#39;s stock historically trades at a price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio at or around 10. And EV stocks will have a similar fate due to this capital intensity.</p><h2>Expectations are too high</h2><p>Let&#39;s move back to our revenue example. If annual EV sales reach $1.25 trillion and we assign a generous 15% operating margin across the industry, there will be $180 billion in annual operating income once EV sales hit 50 million a year. Remember, sales are currently at only 6.4 million, including plug-in hybrids, so this is a long way off. On that $180 billion in operating income, if you give it a 21% corporate tax rate, that is $142.2 billion in annual net income across the industry.</p><p>Put an average P/E of 10 (remember, this is typical for automotive companies because of the capital intensity) on the stocks, and you have $1.42 trillion in combined market value once EVs reach maturity. From Rivian (NASDAQ:RIVN) at a $76 billion market cap with no revenue to Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) breaching a $1.1 trillion market cap when it was valued under $100 billion less than three years ago, many investors are bullish on the opportunity in electric vehicles.And why wouldn't they be? The industry is growing quickly, up 26% year over year from 2020, and is going after a gigantic market opportunity in the worldwide car market. But just because these stocks are in a large, growing industry doesn't mean they will be great investments over the next decade. Just ask Cisco Systems investors who bought stock in 1999 and 2000.Are electric vehicle stocks overhyped? Yes. Let me explain why.Image source: Getty Images.Growth is strong, and the market opportunity is massiveTo start out, let's give some context around the global opportunity in electric vehicles and the overall automotive industry. In 2021, it is estimated that 6.4 million electric vehicles (EVs) were sold around the world, of which 4 million of these were all-electric and 2.4 million plug-in hybrids. That total number is up 26% from 2020.In 2022, analysts are actually expecting this growth to accelerate due to the number of models being available in the U.S. jumping from 62 to 100. If that is the case, global annual sales for electric vehicles should hit 10 million in the near future. For reference, 66 million total cars are estimated to have been sold around the world in 2021.Those are all high-level numbers, but what about the financial opportunity? Assuming an average selling price of $25,000, 10 million EV sales would equate to $250 billion in annual sales. At 50 million EVs, which assumes they take over the majority of the auto market, that equates to $1.25 trillion in sales. Clearly, the opportunity is massive from a revenue standpoint.Margins will be lowWhile the revenue opportunity for EVs is large, these manufacturing businesses also have low margins. For example, let's look at Toyota (NYSE:TM), the largest automaker in the world, with an estimated 8.5% market share in 2019. Over the last 12 months, the company has brought in $281 billion in revenue. On that revenue, only $31 billion turned into operating income, or an 11% operating margin.Tesla, the biggest pure-play EV maker, is seeing just shy of 10% operating margins on $47 billion in revenue. Given the reduction in manufacturing complications of a battery pack versus an internal combustion engine, EV makers may achieve better operating margins than 11% at scale. But they still require bending metal to succeed, so the likelihood they will be much higher than 11% on average over the long term seems unlikely.What's more, automotive businesses require tons of capital expenditures relative to their sales just to stay afloat. For example, Toyota spent almost $35 billion on capital investments over the last 12 months. Given its profit margins, that makes it very difficult for the company to return excess cash to shareholders -- which is the only driver of shareholder value in the long run. This is why Toyota's stock historically trades at a price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio at or around 10. And EV stocks will have a similar fate due to this capital intensity.Expectations are too highLet's move back to our revenue example. If annual EV sales reach $1.25 trillion and we assign a generous 15% operating margin across the industry, there will be $180 billion in annual operating income once EV sales hit 50 million a year. Remember, sales are currently at only 6.4 million, including plug-in hybrids, so this is a long way off. On that $180 billion in operating income, if you give it a 21% corporate tax rate, that is $142.2 billion in annual net income across the industry.Put an average P/E of 10 (remember, this is typical for automotive companies because of the capital intensity) on the stocks, and you have $1.42 trillion in combined market value once EVs reach maturity. In 2021, it is estimated that 6.4 million electric vehicles (EVs) were sold around the world, of which 4 million of these were all-electric and 2.4 million plug-in hybrids. That total number is up 26% from 2020.</p><p>In 2022, analysts are actually expecting this growth to accelerate due to the number of models being available in the U.S. jumping from 62 to 100. If that is the case, global annual sales for electric vehicles should hit 10 million in the near future. For reference, 66 million total cars are estimated to have been sold around the world in 2021.</p><p>Those are all high-level numbers, but what about the financial opportunity? Assuming an average selling price of $25,000, 10 million EV sales would equate to $250 billion in annual sales. At 50 million EVs, which assumes they take over the majority of the auto market, that equates to $1.25 trillion in sales. Clearly, the opportunity is massive from a revenue standpoint.</p><h2>Margins will be low</h2><p>While the revenue opportunity for EVs is large, these manufacturing businesses also have low margins. For example, let&#39;s look at <b>Toyota </b>(NYSE:TM), the largest automaker in the world, with an estimated 8.5% market share in 2019. Over the last 12 months, the company has brought in $281 billion in revenue. On that revenue, only $31 billion turned into operating income, or an 11% operating margin.</p><p>Tesla, the biggest pure-play EV maker, is seeing just shy of 10% operating margins on $47 billion in revenue. Given the reduction in manufacturing complications of a battery pack versus an internal combustion engine, EV makers may achieve better operating margins than 11% at scale. But they still require bending metal to succeed, so the likelihood they will be much higher than 11% on average over the long term seems unlikely.</p><p>What&#39;s more, automotive businesses require tons of capital expenditures relative to their sales just to stay afloat. For example, Toyota spent almost $35 billion on capital investments over the last 12 months. Given its profit margins, that makes it very difficult for the company to return excess cash to shareholders -- which is the <i>only</i> driver of shareholder value in the long run. This is why Toyota&#39;s stock historically trades at a price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio at or around 10. And EV stocks will have a similar fate due to this capital intensity.</p><h2>Expectations are too high</h2><p>Let&#39;s move back to our revenue example. If annual EV sales reach $1.25 trillion and we assign a generous 15% operating margin across the industry, there will be $180 billion in annual operating income once EV sales hit 50 million a year. Remember, sales are currently at only 6.4 million, including plug-in hybrids, so this is a long way off. On that $180 billion in operating income, if you give it a 21% corporate tax rate, that is $142.2 billion in annual net income across the industry.</p><p>Put an average P/E of 10 (remember, this is typical for automotive companies because of the capital intensity) on the stocks, and you have $1.42 trillion in combined market value once EVs reach maturity. Looking at the five pure-play EV stocks right now, which are Tesla, Rivian, <b>Lucid Motors </b>(NASDAQ:LCID), <b>Nio </b>(NYSE:NIO), and <b>Xpeng </b>(NYSE:XPEV), their combined market caps are <i>currently</i> $1.34 trillion, or pretty darn close to what the whole industry will be worth at maturity with optimistic margin and growth assumptions.</p><p>And this doesn&#39;t include the legacy automakers like Toyota, <b>Ford Motor Company</b>, <b>GM</b>, and <b>Volkswagen</b>, which are all making major investments into EVs. Assuming none of these legacy manufacturers will at least capture some of the $1.42 trillion market value is naive, in my opinion.</p><p>Given all these numbers, it is clear that the electric vehicle market is overhyped. If you are invested in <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> of these companies, or even a legacy automaker, you need to be confident in that specific company&#39;s ability to win market share and beat all these competitors. The industry is growing quickly, up 26% year over year from 2020, and is going after a gigantic market opportunity in the worldwide car market. But just because these stocks are in a large, growing industry doesn't mean they will be great investments over the next decade. Just ask Cisco Systems investors who bought stock in 1999 and 2000.Are electric vehicle stocks overhyped? Yes. In 2021, it is estimated that 6.4 million electric vehicles (EVs) were sold around the world, of which 4 million of these were all-electric and 2.4 million plug-in hybrids. That total number is up 26% from 2020.In 2022, analysts are actually expecting this growth to accelerate due to the number of models being available in the U.S. jumping from 62 to 100. If that is the case, global annual sales for electric vehicles should hit 10 million in the near future. For reference, 66 million total cars are estimated to have been sold around the world in 2021.Those are all high-level numbers, but what about the financial opportunity? Assuming an average selling price of $25,000, 10 million EV sales would equate to $250 billion in annual sales. At 50 million EVs, which assumes they take over the majority of the auto market, that equates to $1.25 trillion in sales. Just before the end of the year, she also stated that TSLA still has “miles to run.” That interview took place before Tesla reported disappointing fourth-quarter deliveries, but Wood’s recent purchases make it clear she stands by the assessment.</p><p>Here’s what investors should know moving forward.</p><h2>What’s Happening With TSLA Stock?</h2><p>After falling Tuesday, TSLA stock is back in the green by 5% on Wednesday. This likely isn’t because of Wood’s purchases.
