Many officials have signaled they are leaning toward approving a 0.5-point increase at their Dec. 13-14 meeting.</p><p>Investors have been eager for evidence that the central bank would slow its pace of rate rises, andmarkets ralliedafter Mr. Powell’s remarks. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 2.2%, or about 735 points, enough to put the index back in a bull market, defined as a 20% rise from a recent low. Officials seek to reduce inflation by slowing the economy through tighter financial conditions—such as higher borrowing costs, lower stock prices and a stronger dollar—which typically curb demand.</p><p>The U.S. economy shrank slightly in the first half of this year, but grew more briskly in the third quarter than previously estimated. Gross domestic product increased at an inflation-adjustedannual rate of 2.9%from July through September, up from an initial estimate of 2.6%, the Commerce Department said Wednesday.</p><p>Awave of layoffshas rippled across industries such as tech, entertainment and real estate. Some officials are concerned about causing unnecessary damage to the economy and labor market because it takes time for the full effects of those increases to ripple through the economy.</p><p>Other policy makers are concerned that price pressures could stay high because, despite improvements in supply chains and commodity markets, prices have picked up for more labor-intensive services.</p><p>Mr. Powell pushed back against concerns that the Fed was raising rates too aggressively by warning that allowing rapid price increases to persist could cause consumers to expect continued high inflation, making it more entrenched.</p><p>“It can’t be that we can go on for five years at a very high level of inflation and that it doesn’t work its way into the wage- and price-setting process pretty quickly. That’s a serious concern,” he said.</p><p>Mr. Powell repeated his earlier view that officials were likely to raise rates to a somewhat higher level early next year than they had anticipated in projections released after their September meeting, when most officials saw their benchmark rate rising to between 4.5% and 5%.</p><p>Mr. Powell focused part of his remarks on exploring why the share of Americans seeking work remains below its prepandemic level. The analysis carries important implications for setting interest rates because if wage pressures remain stronger in the coming years, that could lead to a period of greater volatility in wages, inflation and borrowing costs.</p><p>Mr. Powell said most of the shortfall appears to reflect older Americanswho retired earlywhen the pandemic hit the U.S. in March 2020 and from slower growth in the working-age population, which he said could reflect reduced levels of legal immigration and a surge in deaths during the pandemic.</p><p>Steps to boost workforce participation aren’t controlled by the Fed and wouldn’t be able to take effect rapidly enough to address the current bout of high inflation, Mr. Powell said.</p><p>The upshot is that Fed policy will seek to slow inflation and wage growth by reducing demand for workers, a subject that Mr. Powell addressed delicately on Wednesday. “For the near term, a moderation of labor demand growth will be required to restore balance to the labor market,” he said.</p><p>While strong wage growth “is a good thing,” he implied it is too high right now to support a return to the Fed’s 2% inflation target. “For wage growth to be sustainable, it needs to be consistent with 2% inflation,” he said.</p><p>Mr. Powell said the Fed’s preferred measure of inflation, the personal-consumption expenditures price index, likely rose around 6% in October from a year earlier, down from 6.2% in September. The Commerce Department is set to release October figures on Thursday. Some officials are concerned about causing unnecessary damage to the economy and labor market because it takes time for the full effects of those increases to ripple through the economy.Other policy makers are concerned that price pressures could stay high because, despite improvements in supply chains and commodity markets, prices have picked up for more labor-intensive services.Mr. Powell pushed back against concerns that the Fed was raising rates too aggressively by warning that allowing rapid price increases to persist could cause consumers to expect continued high inflation, making it more entrenched.“It can’t be that we can go on for five years at a very high level of inflation and that it doesn’t work its way into the wage- and price-setting process pretty quickly. So, what doesit mean? Is this just a bear market rally, or a signal of the major bottom. Let&#39;s first evaluate the top 20 list of the daily rates of return for the S&amp;P500:</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/9a00554a6ad210b0ab26216de0667def\" tg-width=\"927\" tg-height=\"1314\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>As you can see from the list above,</p><ul><li>12 out 20 top daily returns were the bear market rallies, and 8 out of these 12 were during the 1929-1932 bear market and the Great Depression.</li><li>8 out of 20 were the near-bottoms, bottoms, or after-bottoms, and 6 of these 8 were during the bottom associated with the 1932 Great Depression bottom.</li><li>2 out of 8 bottoms were associated with the bottoms of the sharp corrections, the 1987 and the 2020 bottom. The 1987 correction was not associated with a recession, and it is generally considered as a technical in nature. The 2020 bottom was associated with the extraordinary events related to covid19 and the monetary and fiscal covid stimuli.</li></ul><p>Based on the historical evidence, the 5.6% daily spike in S&amp;P500 (SPX) is either a signal of a major bottom or just another bear market rally.</p><h2>The major bottom thesis</h2><p>The major bottom thesis requires an actual bear market capitulation, such as the 1932 bottom, the 2003 bottom or 2009 bottom. In each of these cases, there was a clear policy response to stimulate the economy, both monetary and fiscal.</p><p>The 11/10/22 daily spike was in response to the positive surprise in the CPI inflation, which raised the hope of the Fed pivot - or a less aggressive monetary policy tightening.</p><p>As I previously explained, the full bear market has3 stages:1) the liquidity selloff in response to the Fed&#39;s monetary policy tightening, 2) the recessionary selloff caused by the Fed&#39;s tightening, and 3) the credit crunch (or a financial crisis) triggered by the deep recession.</p><p>The bullish case assumes that the current bear market ended with the Phase 1 - or with the peak Fed hawkishness. It&#39;s true, we are likely past the peak inflation, and thus the peak hawkishness.</p><p>However, the question is whether there is a Phase 2 coming - or a recessionary selloff, and whether &#34;something will break&#34; during the process and cause the Phase 3 and the credit crunch.</p><h2>The recessionary selloff</h2><p>The S&amp;P500 PE ratio after the 11/10 spike is 20.58. The market is still overvalued and not priced for a recession.</p><p>Is the recession coming? The spread between the 10Y Treasury Bond yield and the 3-Month Treasury Bill yield is the most reliable and the Fed-favored recession indicator, and once it inverts, the recession becomes almost a certainty.</p><p>Currently, the 10y-3mo spread is deeply inverted at -0.46%. Here is the chart:</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/70ef81e28bf62d769ca5f75f29feb339\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"237\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>FRED</span></p><p>Based on yield curve spread indicator, the recession is coming, and the market is not priced for it - based on the PE ratio of over 20. Thus, the current bear market has not bottomed yet, and the next Phase of the bear market is coming.</p><h2>Why is the 10Y-3mo curve inverted? Why is this signaling a recession?</h2><p>The 10Y-3mo spread is inverted because the Fed is hiking the short-term interest rates above the long-term interest rates. Why? To cause a recession to bring the inflation down.</p><p>The market hopes that the Fed will slow down with the interest rates hikes, because the inflation has peaked. Too late. The damage has been done. The Fed could even stop after the December 50bpt hike, the 10y-3mo spread has already inverted.</p><p>But don&#39;t count on the Fed to pause yet. If the core CPI printed today 4.3% (instead of actual 6.3%), and that was expected to persist, the Fed would still have to further hike. The target is 2% inflation.</p><p>But don&#39;t expect inflation to sharply fall either - without a deep recession. The economic war with China is still active, and it&#39;s more likely to escalate. This is inflationary. The war in Ukraine is still active and it&#39;s more likely to escalate. This is also inflationary. The unemployment rate in the US is still near record lows, and this is inflationary. The only thing the Fed can influence is the US unemployment rate - by inducing a recession.</p><h2>It&#39;s a bear market rally</h2><p>We are not at a major bottom; we are possibly in-between the Phase 1 selloff and a Phase 2 recessionary selloff. There are already signs of &#34;things breaking&#34; like the cryptocurrencies, which could lead to the Phase 3 selloff.</p><p>Bear market rallies happen during the &#34;in-between periods&#34;, so this bear market rally could continue. The bottom will be in-place when the Fed wants to the bottom to be in place - this will be the pivot the bulls are waiting: the Fed slashing interest rates and resuming QE. I don&#39;t think anybody expects this over the near term. Don&#39;t fight the Fed. The bear market rally is the opportunity to sell or re-short.</p><h2>SPY sector analysis</h2><p>AllSPYsectors were up significantly on 11/10/2022, led by the beaten down technology sector (XLK), the interest rate sensitive real estate sector (XLRE) and the cyclical discretionary sector (XLY). The 2020 bottom was associated with the extraordinary events related to covid19 and the monetary and fiscal covid stimuli.Based on the historical evidence, the 5.6% daily spike in S&P500 (SPX) is either a signal of a major bottom or just another bear market rally.The major bottom thesisThe major bottom thesis requires an actual bear market capitulation, such as the 1932 bottom, the 2003 bottom or 2009 bottom. In each of these cases, there was a clear policy response to stimulate the economy, both monetary and fiscal.The 11/10/22 daily spike was in response to the positive surprise in the CPI inflation, which raised the hope of the Fed pivot - or a less aggressive monetary policy tightening.As I previously explained, the full bear market has3 stages:1) the liquidity selloff in response to the Fed's monetary policy tightening, 2) the recessionary selloff caused by the Fed's tightening, and 3) the credit crunch (or a financial crisis) triggered by the deep recession.The bullish case assumes that the current bear market ended with the Phase 1 - or with the peak Fed hawkishness. It's true, we are likely past the peak inflation, and thus the peak hawkishness.However, the question is whether there is a Phase 2 coming - or a recessionary selloff, and whether \"something will break\" during the process and cause the Phase 3 and the credit crunch.The recessionary selloffThe S&P500 PE ratio after the 11/10 spike is 20.58. The market is still overvalued and not priced for a recession.Is the recession coming? The spread between the 10Y Treasury Bond yield and the 3-Month Treasury Bill yield is the most reliable and the Fed-favored recession indicator, and once it inverts, the recession becomes almost a certainty.Currently, the 10y-3mo spread is deeply inverted at -0.46%. Here is the chart:FREDBased on yield curve spread indicator, the recession is coming, and the market is not priced for it - based on the PE ratio of over 20. Thus, the current bear market has not bottomed yet, and the next Phase of the bear market is coming.Why is the 10Y-3mo curve inverted? Why is this signaling a recession?The 10Y-3mo spread is inverted because the Fed is hiking the short-term interest rates above the long-term interest rates. Why? To cause a recession to bring the inflation down.The market hopes that the Fed will slow down with the interest rates hikes, because the inflation has peaked. Too late. The damage has been done. The Fed could even stop after the December 50bpt hike, the 10y-3mo spread has already inverted.But don't count on the Fed to pause yet. If the core CPI printed today 4.3% (instead of actual 6.3%), and that was expected to persist, the Fed would still have to further hike. The target is 2% inflation.But don't expect inflation to sharply fall either - without a deep recession. The economic war with China is still active, and it's more likely to escalate. This is inflationary. The war in Ukraine is still active and it's more likely to escalate. This is also inflationary. The unemployment rate in the US is still near record lows, and this is inflationary. The only thing the Fed can influence is the US unemployment rate - by inducing a recession.It's a bear market rallyWe are not at a major bottom; we are possibly in-between the Phase 1 selloff and a Phase 2 recessionary selloff. There are already signs of \"things breaking\" like the cryptocurrencies, which could lead to the Phase 3 selloff.Bear market rallies happen during the \"in-between periods\", so this bear market rally could continue. The bottom will be in-place when the Fed wants to the bottom to be in place - this will be the pivot the bulls are waiting: the Fed slashing interest rates and resuming QE. I don't think anybody expects this over the near term. Don't fight the Fed. The bear market rally is the opportunity to sell or re-short.SPY sector analysisAllSPYsectors were up significantly on 11/10/2022, led by the beaten down technology sector (XLK), the interest rate sensitive real estate sector (XLRE) and the cyclical discretionary sector (XLY). Customers seem to love the company&#39;s well-designed electric vehicles (EVs) while the bulls seem quite pleased with the 33% stock price rise in the last 12 months. On the other end, the bears are very skeptical of the sustainability of its outsized stock price run. After all, Tesla stock delivered more than a 15-fold return in the last five years.</p><p>But for potential investors thinking about buying the stock now, it is crucial to consider whether it is safe to invest in Tesla today. While that is not going to be an easy exercise, investors should at least consider these two questions about the company and its stock.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/42bdaade247c7cea04b918d57eb73d34\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"466\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/></p><p>Image source: Getty Images.</p><h2><b>1. Is Tesla a durable business?</b></h2><p>Tesla has reported some solid financials lately. After delivering its first profitable year in 2020, Tesla exceeded that performance in 2021. It delivered a record 936,222 EVs to customers, grew revenue and net profit by 73% and 665%, respectively, and expanded free cash flow by 80% to $5 billion.</p><p>But note that the last paragraph started out by using the word &#34;lately.&#34; It&#39;s useful to also be aware that Tesla had never delivered a profitable year until 2020. It has been on the brink of bankruptcy a few times, most recently from 2017 to 2019. But as the worldwide transition from combustion engines into electric engines gained steam, Tesla was favorably positioned to capture the pent-up demand. And it did, as is evident by its solid numbers.</p><p>While the 2021 result was remarkable, it is still an outlier more than a norm. The biggest issue is that two profitable years provide little assurance that Tesla can sustain that in the coming years. As the car industry is highly cyclical, an economic downturn (such as a recession) will cause consumers to tighten their belts. When that happens, average folks tend to delay their purchase of high-value items like a car, which could reduce industry volume. We still do not know how Tesla will perform in such an environment.</p><p>On top of that, the EV race has intensified in recent years. While Tesla is still the dominant player -- with a 21% global market share in 2021, according to Autocar -- incumbents like <b>General Motors</b> and <b>Ford Motor Company</b> have big plans to ramp up their production. Tesla also faces competition from Chinese car companies like <b>BYD</b> and <b>Nio</b>. The former, backed by Warren Buffett, sold 593,745 EVs in 2021. BYD also announced that it would stop producing combustion engine vehicles to focus on EVs and plug-in hybrids.</p><p>In short, Tesla must execute flawlessly in the coming years to maintain its market share and stay profitable. While we do not know whether the company can sustain its strong execution, there is <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> thing we do know for sure: Gone are the days when Tesla had the whole EV market to itself.</p><h2><b>2. Does Tesla stock offer a margin of safety?</b></h2><p>Ask any investor how to make money in the stock market, and the usual reply will be to buy a stock when the price is low and sell when the price is high. However, this argument is incomplete since an investor should also consider the intrinsic value of the stock. The key is to buy when the stock price is lower than the intrinsic value (and sell when it is above).</p><p>But estimating intrinsic value is not a simple task. Not only are there many methods to calculate the intrinsic value of a company, but every investor will use different variables to compute. It is fair to say that every investor will arrive at a different intrinsic value for the same company.</p><p>Enter: margin of safety. The idea is that when investors buy a stock at a price materially lower than its intrinsic value, they have room for errors in their estimation of its value. Even if they make mistakes, they generally lose little money since they buy the stock cheaply.</p><p>So is Tesla&#39;s stock cheap enough today to offer a margin of safety to investors? Let us consider a few simple metrics. As of writing, Tesla has a price-to-sales (P/S), price-to-book (P/B), and price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 21, 35, and 209. Comparatively, General Motors&#39; P/S, P/B, and P/E ratios are 0.5, 1, and 5.9, respectively.</p><p>Tesla bulls will immediately cry foul, claiming that Tesla is fundamentally a different company from GM. While I agree with them that Tesla is not an average company, my argument is this: Is it worth 30 to 40 times more than GM? Or put it differently, is one Tesla equivalent to 30 to 40 GMs? To me, the answer is probably not.</p><h2><b>Back to the original question: Is Tesla stock safe to buy?</b></h2><p>There is no doubt that Tesla is a company with promising prospects. It is a leader in the EV industry and has significant investments in potentially major industries like autonomous vehicles, renewable energy, and others.</p><p>Still, I don&#39;t think it&#39;s safe to buy Tesla stock now with your hard-earned money. One reason is the company just turned profitable in 2020. It would need a few more profitable years before investors can safely assume the turnaround is permanent. Besides, its valuation is not cheap, which offers a very little margin of safety for investors.</p><p>So unless investors are looking for some adrenaline rush, they will be better off staying from the stock. On the other end, the bears are very skeptical of the sustainability of its outsized stock price run. After all, Tesla stock delivered more than a 15-fold return in the last five years.But for potential investors thinking about buying the stock now, it is crucial to consider whether it is safe to invest in Tesla today. While that is not going to be an easy exercise, investors should at least consider these two questions about the company and its stock.Image source: Getty Images.1. Is Tesla a durable business?Tesla has reported some solid financials lately. After delivering its first profitable year in 2020, Tesla exceeded that performance in 2021. It delivered a record 936,222 EVs to customers, grew revenue and net profit by 73% and 665%, respectively, and expanded free cash flow by 80% to $5 billion.But note that the last paragraph started out by using the word \"lately.\" It's useful to also be aware that Tesla had never delivered a profitable year until 2020. It has been on the brink of bankruptcy a few times, most recently from 2017 to 2019. But as the worldwide transition from combustion engines into electric engines gained steam, Tesla was favorably positioned to capture the pent-up demand. And it did, as is evident by its solid numbers.While the 2021 result was remarkable, it is still an outlier more than a norm. The biggest issue is that two profitable years provide little assurance that Tesla can sustain that in the coming years. As the car industry is highly cyclical, an economic downturn (such as a recession) will cause consumers to tighten their belts. When that happens, average folks tend to delay their purchase of high-value items like a car, which could reduce industry volume. We still do not know how Tesla will perform in such an environment.On top of that, the EV race has intensified in recent years. While Tesla is still the dominant player -- with a 21% global market share in 2021, according to Autocar -- incumbents like General Motors and Ford Motor Company have big plans to ramp up their production. Tesla also faces competition from Chinese car companies like BYD and Nio. The former, backed by Warren Buffett, sold 593,745 EVs in 2021. BYD also announced that it would stop producing combustion engine vehicles to focus on EVs and plug-in hybrids.In short, Tesla must execute flawlessly in the coming years to maintain its market share and stay profitable. While we do not know whether the company can sustain its strong execution, there is one thing we do know for sure: Gone are the days when Tesla had the whole EV market to itself.2. Does Tesla stock offer a margin of safety?Ask any investor how to make money in the stock market, and the usual reply will be to buy a stock when the price is low and sell when the price is high. However, this argument is incomplete since an investor should also consider the intrinsic value of the stock. The key is to buy when the stock price is lower than the intrinsic value (and sell when it is above).But estimating intrinsic value is not a simple task. Not only are there many methods to calculate the intrinsic value of a company, but every investor will use different variables to compute. It is fair to say that every investor will arrive at a different intrinsic value for the same company.Enter: margin of safety. The idea is that when investors buy a stock at a price materially lower than its intrinsic value, they have room for errors in their estimation of its value. Even if they make mistakes, they generally lose little money since they buy the stock cheaply.So is Tesla's stock cheap enough today to offer a margin of safety to investors? Let us consider a few simple metrics. As of writing, Tesla has a price-to-sales (P/S), price-to-book (P/B), and price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 21, 35, and 209. Comparatively, General Motors' P/S, P/B, and P/E ratios are 0.5, 1, and 5.9, respectively.Tesla bulls will immediately cry foul, claiming that Tesla is fundamentally a different company from GM. While I agree with them that Tesla is not an average company, my argument is this: Is it worth 30 to 40 times more than GM? Or put it differently, is one Tesla equivalent to 30 to 40 GMs? To me, the answer is probably not.Back to the original question: Is Tesla stock safe to buy?There is no doubt that Tesla is a company with promising prospects. It is a leader in the EV industry and has significant investments in potentially major industries like autonomous vehicles, renewable energy, and others.Still, I don't think it's safe to buy Tesla stock now with your hard-earned money. One reason is the company just turned profitable in 2020. It would need a few more profitable years before investors can safely assume the turnaround is permanent. Besides, its valuation is not cheap, which offers a very little margin of safety for investors.So unless investors are looking for some adrenaline rush, they will be better off staying from the stock. There, chancery judges -- business law experts -- hear cases without juries and can’t award punitive damages. Based on previous merger fights, efforts to terminate a deal can play out within a few months, often ending with settlements to avoid further wrangling.</p><h3>Top Names</h3><p>Savitt, a Wachtell partner, is at the top of select group of A-list chancery court litigators. Companies such as health-insurer Anthem Inc., real-estate giant Sotheby’s and financial titan KKR &amp; Co. have lined up outside his door when deals turn sour or buyouts get challenged in Delaware.</p><p>Strine, who spent over 20 years working in the Delaware courts, most recently as Chief Justice of that state’s Supreme Court, helped shape the legal norms that Musk will seek to test by terminating his agreement to acquire Twitter. Strine joined Wachtell in 2020.</p><p>Before becoming the Chief Justice, he served on the Delaware Court of Chancery as Chancellor from 2011, and as a Vice Chancellor from 1998.</p><p>Delaware Chancery Court typically frowns on efforts to back out of merger agreements. It’s possible that one of Strine’s most influential decisions will determine how Musk makes his case for ditching his Twitter takeover.</p><p>In 2000, Tyson Foods Inc. agreed to acquire rival IPB Corp. Soon after agreeing to the deal, the meat market suffered a precipitous downturn, impacting both companies financially. Tyson argued it had been given misleading information about IBP’s business and was thus no longer obliged to complete the $3.2 billion merger.</p><p>In court, Strine disagreed that there had been a Material Adverse Change and ruled that Tyson must follow through with the deal. The ruling became a landmark and the Tyson-IBP case is still the basis for the way courts and corporations interpret the ability of a buyer to terminate a merger agreement.</p><p>The judges also have a say over whether breakup fees must be paid. In the Musk-Twitter deal, that fee is $1 billion.</p><p>In a regulatory filing after the official market closed Friday, Musk announced plans to walk away from his $54.20-a-share offer to buy Twitter, alleging that the company misrepresented user data. Since becoming CEO of <b>Berkshire Hathaway</b> in 1965, Buffett has overseen the creation of more than $680 billion in shareholder value and delivered an aggregate return on his company&#39;s Class A shares (BRK.A) of better than 3,600,000%.</p><p>While there is a long list of reasons for Buffett&#39;s success, one of the most overlooked catalysts is portfolio concentration. Despite having more than $345 billion invested in around four dozen securities, 93% of Warren Buffett&#39;s portfolio can be traced to just four sectors.</p><h2>Technology: 44.18% of invested assets</h2><p>Although Buffett&#39;s company owns a half-dozen tech stocks, it&#39;s <b>Apple</b> that accounts for the lion&#39;s share of Berkshire Hathaway&#39;s investment portfolio. As of this past weekend, Apple made up 40% of Berkshire&#39;s invested assets.</p><p>What makes Apple so special is its dominance in a variety of categories. It&#39;s widely regarded as the world&#39;s most valuable brand, and it has an exceptionally loyal customer base. Within the U.S., the company&#39;s iPhone accounts for more than half of all smartphone market share.</p><p>Beyond the physical products that brought the company fame, Apple CEO Tim Cook is leading a multiyear shift that&#39;s designed to promote subscription services. For Apple, subscription services should be a higher-margin segment that leads to predictable quarterly cash flow. In short, it&#39;s a way to mitigate revenue fluctuations tied to physical product replacement cycles.</p><p>The other intriguing investment within tech is Buffett&#39;s newest: <b>Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company</b>, which is better known as TSMC. What makes this a seemingly no-brainer investment for Buffett is TSMC is the exclusive supplier of silicon processing chips used in Apple&#39;s products.  If the Oracle of Omaha and his investment team expect Apple to outperform over the long run, it&#39;s only logical that its chip supplier would benefit, too.</p><h2>Financials: 24.08% of invested assets</h2><p>Without question, the least surprising aspect of Berkshire Hathaway&#39;s portfolio is that financial stocks play a key role. As of the end of last week, Buffett&#39;s company was invested in 17 financial securities (this includes two exchange-traded funds) that equated to about $83.3 billion in market value.</p><p>The reason Buffett loves putting Berkshire&#39;s money to work in financial stocks is that they get the benefit of time as an ally. Despite recessions being a regular part of the economic cycle, periods of expansion last considerably longer than recessions. Owning an assortment of banks, insurers, and payment providers allows Berkshire Hathaway to take advantage of the natural expansion in U.S. and global gross domestic product -- as well as consumer and enterprise spending -- over time.</p><p>The largest financial in Berkshire&#39;s investment portfolio is <b>Bank of America</b>. At the moment, BofA&#39;s interest rate sensitivity is its biggest catalyst. No large bank stock will see its net interest income fluctuate more with changes to the yield curve than Bank of America. Considering that the Federal Reserve has no choice but to aggressively raise rates in order to tame historically high inflation, BofA is set to generate billions of dollars in added net interest income.</p><p>Credit-services provider <b>American Express</b> is another large and longtime holding. The beauty of AmEx&#39;s operating model is that the company is able to double dip during periods of expansion. In addition to bringing in merchant fees, it also collects interest income and cardholder fees as a lender.</p><h2>Energy: 12.99% of invested assets</h2><p>Prior to 2022, energy stocks hadn&#39;t accounted for more than 8.9% of Warren Buffett&#39;s investment portfolio at any point this century. But that&#39;s changed in a big way, with energy stocks accounting for nearly 13% of invested assets as of this past week.</p><p>The real jaw-dropper is that the $44.9 billion Buffett and his team have apportioned to &#34;energy stocks&#34; are tied up in just two companies: <b>Chevron</b>  and <b>Occidental Petroleum</b>. Berkshire Hathaway also holds $10 billion in preferred stock of Occidental Petroleum that yields 8% annually. This $10 billion <i>isn&#39;t</i> included in the $44.9 billion figure.</p><p>The only reason the Oracle of Omaha would make this bet is if he believed crude oil and natural gas prices would head higher or remain well above their historical average -- and there&#39;s certainly reason to believe that&#39;ll be the case. The pandemic forced most drilling, exploration, and energy infrastructure companies to significantly pare back their investments. When coupled with Russia invading Ukraine in February, it creates a situation where increasing the global oil and gas supply to meet growing demand becomes difficult. It&#39;s a simple situation of demand outpacing supply, with oil and natural gas prices heading higher as a result.</p><p>Additionally, Chevron and Occidental Petroleum are both integrated operators. Although drilling provides the best margins for oil and gas companies, integrated operators can lean on midstream assets, such as pipelines, or downstream assets, like refineries and chemical plants, if energy commodity prices fall.</p><h2>Consumer staples: 11.38% of invested assets</h2><p>The fourth sector that makes up a sizable portion of Warren Buffett&#39;s portfolio is consumer staples. Interestingly, though, the 11.38% weighting, as of last week, would be a low point this century.</p><p>The lure of consumer staples stocks is the predictability of their cash flow and profit potential. No matter how poorly the U.S. economy or stock market performs, people still need to purchase food, beverages, detergent, toothpaste, toilet paper, and so on. This is what makes this sector so appealing during periods of uncertainty, such as we&#39;re experiencing now.</p><p>Warren Buffett&#39;s longest-held stock, <b>Coca-Cola</b>, is a consumer staple. Coca-Cola is one of the most recognized brands in the world, which is a testament to its stellar marketing and its ability to cross generational gaps to engage with consumers.</p><p>Furthermore, Coca-Cola is about as geographically diversified as businesses get. With the exception of North Korea, Cuba, and Russia (the latter is due to its invasion of Ukraine), Coke has ongoing operations in every other country right now. This helps it take advantage of predictable cash flow in developed markets, as well as higher organic growth rates in emerging markets.</p><p>But it is worth noting that, with the exception of grocery chain <b>Kroger</b>, Buffett&#39;s company has shied away from buying consumer staple stocks in recent years. This could be an indication that Buffett&#39;s investing lieutenants, Todd Combs and Ted Weschler, are playing a bigger role in Berkshire Hathaway&#39;s investments. Despite having more than $345 billion invested in around four dozen securities, 93% of Warren Buffett's portfolio can be traced to just four sectors.Technology: 44.18% of invested assetsAlthough Buffett's company owns a half-dozen tech stocks, it's Apple that accounts for the lion's share of Berkshire Hathaway's investment portfolio. As of this past weekend, Apple made up 40% of Berkshire's invested assets.What makes Apple so special is its dominance in a variety of categories. It's widely regarded as the world's most valuable brand, and it has an exceptionally loyal customer base. Within the U.S., the company's iPhone accounts for more than half of all smartphone market share.Beyond the physical products that brought the company fame, Apple CEO Tim Cook is leading a multiyear shift that's designed to promote subscription services. For Apple, subscription services should be a higher-margin segment that leads to predictable quarterly cash flow. In short, it's a way to mitigate revenue fluctuations tied to physical product replacement cycles.The other intriguing investment within tech is Buffett's newest: Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, which is better known as TSMC. What makes this a seemingly no-brainer investment for Buffett is TSMC is the exclusive supplier of silicon processing chips used in Apple's products.  If the Oracle of Omaha and his investment team expect Apple to outperform over the long run, it's only logical that its chip supplier would benefit, too.Financials: 24.08% of invested assetsWithout question, the least surprising aspect of Berkshire Hathaway's portfolio is that financial stocks play a key role. As of the end of last week, Buffett's company was invested in 17 financial securities (this includes two exchange-traded funds) that equated to about $83.3 billion in market value.The reason Buffett loves putting Berkshire's money to work in financial stocks is that they get the benefit of time as an ally. Despite recessions being a regular part of the economic cycle, periods of expansion last considerably longer than recessions. Owning an assortment of banks, insurers, and payment providers allows Berkshire Hathaway to take advantage of the natural expansion in U.S. and global gross domestic product -- as well as consumer and enterprise spending -- over time.The largest financial in Berkshire's investment portfolio is Bank of America. At the moment, BofA's interest rate sensitivity is its biggest catalyst. No large bank stock will see its net interest income fluctuate more with changes to the yield curve than Bank of America. Considering that the Federal Reserve has no choice but to aggressively raise rates in order to tame historically high inflation, BofA is set to generate billions of dollars in added net interest income.Credit-services provider American Express is another large and longtime holding. The beauty of AmEx's operating model is that the company is able to double dip during periods of expansion. In addition to bringing in merchant fees, it also collects interest income and cardholder fees as a lender.Energy: 12.99% of invested assetsPrior to 2022, energy stocks hadn't accounted for more than 8.9% of Warren Buffett's investment portfolio at any point this century. But that's changed in a big way, with energy stocks accounting for nearly 13% of invested assets as of this past week.The real jaw-dropper is that the $44.9 billion Buffett and his team have apportioned to \"energy stocks\" are tied up in just two companies: Chevron  and Occidental Petroleum. Berkshire Hathaway also holds $10 billion in preferred stock of Occidental Petroleum that yields 8% annually. This $10 billion isn't included in the $44.9 billion figure.The only reason the Oracle of Omaha would make this bet is if he believed crude oil and natural gas prices would head higher or remain well above their historical average -- and there's certainly reason to believe that'll be the case. The pandemic forced most drilling, exploration, and energy infrastructure companies to significantly pare back their investments. When coupled with Russia invading Ukraine in February, it creates a situation where increasing the global oil and gas supply to meet growing demand becomes difficult. It's a simple situation of demand outpacing supply, with oil and natural gas prices heading higher as a result.Additionally, Chevron and Occidental Petroleum are both integrated operators. Although drilling provides the best margins for oil and gas companies, integrated operators can lean on midstream assets, such as pipelines, or downstream assets, like refineries and chemical plants, if energy commodity prices fall.Consumer staples: 11.38% of invested assetsThe fourth sector that makes up a sizable portion of Warren Buffett's portfolio is consumer staples. Interestingly, though, the 11.38% weighting, as of last week, would be a low point this century.The lure of consumer staples stocks is the predictability of their cash flow and profit potential. No matter how poorly the U.S. economy or stock market performs, people still need to purchase food, beverages, detergent, toothpaste, toilet paper, and so on. This is what makes this sector so appealing during periods of uncertainty, such as we're experiencing now.Warren Buffett's longest-held stock, Coca-Cola, is a consumer staple. Coca-Cola is one of the most recognized brands in the world, which is a testament to its stellar marketing and its ability to cross generational gaps to engage with consumers.Furthermore, Coca-Cola is about as geographically diversified as businesses get. With the exception of North Korea, Cuba, and Russia (the latter is due to its invasion of Ukraine), Coke has ongoing operations in every other country right now. This helps it take advantage of predictable cash flow in developed markets, as well as higher organic growth rates in emerging markets.But it is worth noting that, with the exception of grocery chain Kroger, Buffett's company has shied away from buying consumer staple stocks in recent years. This could be an indication that Buffett's investing lieutenants, Todd Combs and Ted Weschler, are playing a bigger role in Berkshire Hathaway's investments.
