Wonder why Singtel, StarHub, M1 not proactively work with SpaceX , Starlink or show interest to Elon Musk projects ? Seem like still no lesson learnt when LTA give cold response to Tesla many yrs ago. But a growing number of analysts and investors now think the next crypto bull market will result in multiple coins attaining a trillion-dollar valuation.</p><p>Just how likely is that scenario? After all, the highest-ever market capitalization of all cryptocurrency combined -- which encompasses thousands of different coins -- was $3 trillion. So, unless the size of the crypto market expands dramatically, the path to a trillion-dollar valuation for any coin is difficult at best. Here&#39;s a closer look at three high-growth coins that might get there.</p><h2>1. Bitcoin</h2><p>The case for Bitcoin attaining a $1 trillion valuation in the next bull market is more reasonable than it might sound, given that it topped out at $1.28 trillion in the last bull market. At a current market cap of $458 billion, Bitcoin needs to slightly more than double in value to reach the trillion-dollar mark. Given its current price of $23,785, that would imply a future price near $50,000 -- well below Bitcoin&#39;s all-time high of $68,789.63.</p><p>There are other, more sophisticated ways to think about a trillion-dollar valuation for the token. For example, prominent Bitcoin bull Michael Saylor has focused on the world&#39;s physical gold supply.</p><p>If you buy into the notion that Bitcoin is &#34;digital gold,&#34; then at some point, the value of Bitcoin and the value of the world&#39;s physical gold supply should start to converge. Right now, the value of the world&#39;s physical gold supply is estimated to be between $10 trillion and $15 trillion, so Bitcoin&#39;s maximum possible valuation could also rise to that level.</p><p>That logic might sound far-fetched, but Wall Street bank <b>Goldman Sachs</b> has applied a similar reasoning process, arriving at a $100,000 price target for Bitcoin in January 2022.</p><h2>2. Ethereum</h2><p>The case for a trillion-dollar valuation is harder to make for <b>Ethereum</b>, which currently has a nearly $200 billion market cap. It would need to increase in value fivefold to hit $1 trillion.</p><p>Even at its all-time peak, the digital coin only reached a market cap of $571.67 billion, so there&#39;s clearly work to do. Slow, incremental growth is not the path to a trillion-dollar valuation for Ethereum.</p><p>One approach to valuing Ethereum is to separately value all of its business lines -- e.g. non-fungible tokens (NFTs), gaming, decentralized finance (DeFi), and the metaverse. You would then need to make a growth projection for each of these business lines.</p><p>But are any of Ethereum&#39;s core business lines capable of growing at a 5X rate? Take, for example, the NFT market, which was worth $25 billion in both 2021 and 2022. Assuming that Ethereum currently controls close to 75% of the NFT market, that&#39;s roughly $20 billion in annual sales. A 5X scaling factor would imply $100 billion in annual NFT sales for Ethereum.</p><p>That&#39;s possible over a long-enough time horizon, but most likely we would need to look elsewhere for a huge 5X impact. That&#39;s why many analysts are focused on sectors like the metaverse, where growth could be truly exponential.</p><p>Analysts have suggested that the metaverse could be a trillion-dollar market opportunity, so even if Ethereum claims just a 10% market share, that&#39;s still $100 billion, more than enough to make up for any sluggishness in the NFT market.</p><h2>3. Solana</h2><p>Lastly, there&#39;s <b>Solana</b>, which had been a crypto market darling before the events of 2022 unfolded. Solana is up more than 100% in 2023, so things are looking sunnier for the crypto. Even with that rapid rise, its market cap is still less than $10 billion, so a trillion-dollar valuation would imply a more than 100X gain in value.</p><p>This presents enormous challenges from a financial modeling perspective. Is there anything Solana can do that will lead to 100X returns? Most likely, it would require several high-risk, high-reward strategies and a lot of good luck.</p><p>The good news is that it is making a big bet on mobile crypto with its new Solana Mobile initiative. And its expanding network of retail stores (which Solana prefers to call &#34;embassies&#34;) could be one way to supercharge growth with retail investors.</p><p>Solana is also going big on its global expansion strategy, investing in new initiatives across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.</p><h2>A long-term view of crypto</h2><p>There&#39;s a good reason why venture capitalists like to refer to start-up companies that attain a billion-dollar valuation as &#34;unicorns.&#34; They are extremely rare. And rarer still are companies that obtain a trillion-dollar valuation. Right now, only a handful of publicly traded companies have ever topped that figure.</p><p>That&#39;s why I think it might take nearly a decade before we see multiple cryptos obtain a trillion-dollar valuation. For now, I&#39;m pinning my long-term investment hopes on Bitcoin and Ethereum, which are both capable of reaching that peak without dramatic changes to their overall growth plans. Roku: Streaming is still growing</h2><p>Roku stock is down a whopping 89% from its peak in 2021, as seemingly everything has gone wrong for the leading streaming platform.</p><p>First, subscriber growth in services like <b>Netflix </b>seemed to hit a ceiling after a surge in growth earlier in the pandemic. The ad market also shriveled as brands are preparing for a recession and cutting spending. In fact, the slowdown is bad enough that Roku actually forecast a decline in revenue in the fourth quarter.</p><p>Roku has also swung from profits in 2021 to sizable losses as the company stepped up its investments in the business just as revenue growth started to slow.</p><p>However, it&#39;s a mistake to think the Roku growth story is dead. In fact, the company continues to grow users and viewing time, which is a sign that demand for its service remains strong.</p><p>Earlier in January, the company said it had topped 70 million active accounts globally, adding 9.9 million in 2022, more than the 8.9 million it gained in 2021. The company also said streaming hours increased 19% in the year to 87.4 billion, showing that Roku users are spending more time with the platform.</p><p>Roku&#39;s business is centered around advertising. It takes a 30% share of ad inventory from its streaming partners, and with several legacy media companies having recently launched streaming services and Netflix and <b>Disney</b> recently adding advertising tiers, Roku should get some significant tailwinds over time.</p><p>Despite the current headwinds, Roku&#39;s long-term growth still looks promising, and the stock should recover once the ad market picks up.</p><h2>2. Shopify: E-commerce will rebound</h2><p>Much like Roku stock plunged on weakness in the streaming industry, so has Shopify plunged due to the slowdown in e-commerce.</p><p>Shares of the e-commerce software leader have tumbled after surging on strong growth during the pandemic. Revenue growth has slowed as its profits have turned into losses, and it has seen a stretched valuation, which was up to a price-to-sales ratio over 50 at one point during the pandemic.</p><p>Shopify is far from the only e-commerce stock that&#39;s struggling lately. In fact, most have experienced the whipsaw effect of a boom and bust during the pandemic, including <b>Amazon</b>, <b>Etsy</b>, and <b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/W\">Wayfair</a></b>.</p><p>Despite those headwinds, the long-term opportunity for Shopify is still intact. It&#39;s the clear leader in e-commerce software, and it&#39;s still outgrowing the industry, posting 21% constant-currency growth in gross merchandise volume during the Black Friday weekend. Roku: Streaming is still growingRoku stock is down a whopping 89% from its peak in 2021, as seemingly everything has gone wrong for the leading streaming platform.First, subscriber growth in services like Netflix seemed to hit a ceiling after a surge in growth earlier in the pandemic. The ad market also shriveled as brands are preparing for a recession and cutting spending. In fact, the slowdown is bad enough that Roku actually forecast a decline in revenue in the fourth quarter.Roku has also swung from profits in 2021 to sizable losses as the company stepped up its investments in the business just as revenue growth started to slow.However, it's a mistake to think the Roku growth story is dead. In fact, the company continues to grow users and viewing time, which is a sign that demand for its service remains strong.Earlier in January, the company said it had topped 70 million active accounts globally, adding 9.9 million in 2022, more than the 8.9 million it gained in 2021. The company also said streaming hours increased 19% in the year to 87.4 billion, showing that Roku users are spending more time with the platform.Roku's business is centered around advertising. It takes a 30% share of ad inventory from its streaming partners, and with several legacy media companies having recently launched streaming services and Netflix and Disney recently adding advertising tiers, Roku should get some significant tailwinds over time.Despite the current headwinds, Roku's long-term growth still looks promising, and the stock should recover once the ad market picks up.2. Many Tesla bulls believe the primary reason for the sell-off is Elon Musk&#39;s acquisition of Twitter (and associated selling of nearly $8 billionin Tesla stock to fund it) coupled with his behavior on the site post-acquisition. While this certainly wasn&#39;t helpful, I do not believe this is the main reason for the precipitous drop.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/4ccc838ea48117e63535d8234c0c731a\" tg-width=\"635\" tg-height=\"433\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>Data by YCharts</span></p><p>The primary reason is far more basic; Tesla has simply saturated its key markets. If the Q4 delivery miss wasn&#39;t enough of a signal, this week&#39;s price cuts should be.</p><p>I believe Tesla had an ugly choice to make: it could either badly miss delivery forecasts in 2023, or it could cut price drastically and hope to bridge some of the gap withvolume. I believe it is ultimately the wrong choice, and Tesla has chosen the path that&#39;s more likely to help the stock price in the near term, rather than maintain the brand&#39;s value in the long term.</p><h2>Tesla Car Values and Backlog</h2><p>Tesla enthusiast Troy Teslike noted a precipitous decline in backlog since the middle of the summer. For most of the last 2.5 years, demand for Tesla&#39;s cars certainly exceeded supply, but this seemed to have reversed in the past 6 months.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ba4b85746feadc0bf81f60f67cab6bb1\" tg-width=\"564\" tg-height=\"769\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>Tesla Backlog (Troy Teslike (Twitter))</span></p><p>In the same timeframe, Tesla used car values, which were extremely strong for most of the pandemic, began to rapidly decline.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/860dc3358ecacee3ce324a673f432cea\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"610\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>Tesla Used Car Values (CarGurus as of 1-14-23)</span></p><p>Tesla car values had already dropped significantly in the past 90 days, which in my opinion was a far bigger reason for the stock dropping than Elon&#39;s Twitter sideshow. The latest move will knock another $10,000+ off residual values on top of what&#39;s already happened in the past 90 days.</p><h2>Price Cut Impact on Gross Margins</h2><p>Tesla supporters believe it is a luxury brand. But luxury brands generally don&#39;t cut prices in the face of slack demand. In general, they don&#39;t cut prices at all!</p><p>Guggenheim&#39;s analysis on the impact of the price cut is pretty grim, especially for the Model Y.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d9559c453e9557a0e14fc12d96aafcd7\" tg-width=\"549\" tg-height=\"680\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>Price Cut Margin Impact (Guggenheim estimates)</span></p><p>Unless volumes increase rapidly from 2022 levels, the narrative of Tesla being &#34;cheap&#34; on an earnings per share basis is going to be challenged as 2023 progresses.</p><h2>Tesla Cost of Goods</h2><p>One theory I&#39;ve heard is that Tesla&#39;s supply chain costs have dropped significantly, so they&#39;re better able to pass along the savings to customers. I very much doubt this is true.</p><p>2022 was the first year in the last decade where battery costs increased, due to sharp increases in the price of lithium, cobalt, nickel, and other raw materials. The cost of labor has also risen significantly in the past few years.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d38972cae70cb1da6790ee192e488ba5\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"376\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>EV Industry Battery cost estimates (BloombergNEF)</span></p><p>Impacts from any increase in battery costs won&#39;t be felt immediately, as Tesla usually has fixed term contracts in place, but when these contracts are rolled over and renegotiated, the price is likely up and not down.</p><h2>EV Credits and the Inflation Reduction Act</h2><p>The price cuts in the US were strategic in that they moved most Tesla models below the $55,000 ceiling for the newly available $7500 credit in the Inflation Reduction Act. By moving under this ceiling, the end price for a Model Y LR drops from ~$68,000 to $47,130, a massive reduction which will certainly increase volume. How much volume still remains to be seen. Unlike the previous $7500 credit, the new EV credit has income exclusions, so single filers that make more than $150,000 are ineligible. This likely includes large portions of the young, technologically savvy crowd that Tesla is popular with.</p><p>Had the US price been reduced in isolation, I could listen to the argument that this move was done to maximize the tax credit and grow already strong demand more rapidly. But this is not what has happened, because, at the same time, the US price has been reduced, Tesla has reduced pricing across most of the EU as well, following the recent price cuts in China.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/3a00abe83ad68c6fb4207077193a5e9b\" tg-width=\"664\" tg-height=\"581\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>Tesla EU Prices (Tesla.com)</span></p><p>It appears that the exhaustion of the backlog and increased competition are pressuring the European market as well.</p><h2>Conclusion</h2><p>I have seen several bulls frame this latest move as Tesla going &#34;on the offense&#34; to capture further market share and put legacy auto out of business. It&#39;s an interesting take, but I believe it is ultimately just fantasy.</p><p>Tesla did a fantastic job executing over the past 3 years, expanding capacity and navigating the supply chain crisis well. They were still able to produce Model 3 and Model Y&#39;s while other manufacturers had to cut production. Raising production in an undersupplied market allowed Tesla to raise prices, and they received an additional tailwind from high gasoline prices earlier this year. From a production standpoint, they did well and the stock price responded.</p><p>But at the same time, the majority of the new promised products have not come to fruition, and Tesla still derives the overwhelming majority of its revenue from 2 aging car models that have not had a significant refresh since inception. Gas prices have fallen significantly and other manufacturers are producing again.</p><p>Even with lower prices, I think it will be a challenge for Tesla to match 2022 volumes, let alone sell enough incremental units to raise earnings. Those who are buying Tesla today because it&#39;s &#34;cheap&#34; at 30x earnings might see it get much cheaper if earnings fall in 2023.</p><p><i>This article is written by Fishtown Capital for reference only. I believe it is ultimately the wrong choice, and Tesla has chosen the path that's more likely to help the stock price in the near term, rather than maintain the brand's value in the long term.Tesla Car Values and BacklogTesla enthusiast Troy Teslike noted a precipitous decline in backlog since the middle of the summer. For most of the last 2.5 years, demand for Tesla's cars certainly exceeded supply, but this seemed to have reversed in the past 6 months.Tesla Backlog (Troy Teslike (Twitter))In the same timeframe, Tesla used car values, which were extremely strong for most of the pandemic, began to rapidly decline.Tesla Used Car Values (CarGurus as of 1-14-23)Tesla car values had already dropped significantly in the past 90 days, which in my opinion was a far bigger reason for the stock dropping than Elon's Twitter sideshow. The latest move will knock another $10,000+ off residual values on top of what's already happened in the past 90 days.Price Cut Impact on Gross MarginsTesla supporters believe it is a luxury brand. But luxury brands generally don't cut prices in the face of slack demand. In general, they don't cut prices at all!Guggenheim's analysis on the impact of the price cut is pretty grim, especially for the Model Y.Price Cut Margin Impact (Guggenheim estimates)Unless volumes increase rapidly from 2022 levels, the narrative of Tesla being \"cheap\" on an earnings per share basis is going to be challenged as 2023 progresses.Tesla Cost of GoodsOne theory I've heard is that Tesla's supply chain costs have dropped significantly, so they're better able to pass along the savings to customers. I very much doubt this is true.2022 was the first year in the last decade where battery costs increased, due to sharp increases in the price of lithium, cobalt, nickel, and other raw materials. The cost of labor has also risen significantly in the past few years.EV Industry Battery cost estimates (BloombergNEF)Impacts from any increase in battery costs won't be felt immediately, as Tesla usually has fixed term contracts in place, but when these contracts are rolled over and renegotiated, the price is likely up and not down.EV Credits and the Inflation Reduction ActThe price cuts in the US were strategic in that they moved most Tesla models below the $55,000 ceiling for the newly available $7500 credit in the Inflation Reduction Act. By moving under this ceiling, the end price for a Model Y LR drops from ~$68,000 to $47,130, a massive reduction which will certainly increase volume. How much volume still remains to be seen. Unlike the previous $7500 credit, the new EV credit has income exclusions, so single filers that make more than $150,000 are ineligible. This likely includes large portions of the young, technologically savvy crowd that Tesla is popular with.Had the US price been reduced in isolation, I could listen to the argument that this move was done to maximize the tax credit and grow already strong demand more rapidly. But this is not what has happened, because, at the same time, the US price has been reduced, Tesla has reduced pricing across most of the EU as well, following the recent price cuts in China.Tesla EU Prices (Tesla.com)It appears that the exhaustion of the backlog and increased competition are pressuring the European market as well.ConclusionI have seen several bulls frame this latest move as Tesla going \"on the offense\" to capture further market share and put legacy auto out of business. It's an interesting take, but I believe it is ultimately just fantasy.Tesla did a fantastic job executing over the past 3 years, expanding capacity and navigating the supply chain crisis well. They were still able to produce Model 3 and Model Y's while other manufacturers had to cut production. Raising production in an undersupplied market allowed Tesla to raise prices, and they received an additional tailwind from high gasoline prices earlier this year. From a production standpoint, they did well and the stock price responded.But at the same time, the majority of the new promised products have not come to fruition, and Tesla still derives the overwhelming majority of its revenue from 2 aging car models that have not had a significant refresh since inception. Gas prices have fallen significantly and other manufacturers are producing again.Even with lower prices, I think it will be a challenge for Tesla to match 2022 volumes, let alone sell enough incremental units to raise earnings. Those who are buying Tesla today because it's \"cheap\" at 30x earnings might see it get much cheaper if earnings fall in 2023.This article is written by Fishtown Capital for reference only. Apple&#39;s decision reinvigorated the Mac product line with high performance ARM architecture processors that are several times more energy efficient than Intel. Mac revenue growth has been reinvigorated as well, with Mac revenue growing by 23% in fiscal 2021. Yet the Mac Pro is still Intel-based, and Apple Silicon Macs are still overly dependent on Intel&#39;s Thunderbolt.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ccbbee90da646ea960f2390a81da0b4c\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"359\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p><i>Apple&#39;s venerable Intel-based Mac Pro. Source:</i> <i>Apple.</i></p><p><b>The Conversion From Intel To Apple Silicon Has Been A Smashing Success</b></p><p>By the time that Apple introduced the first Apple Silicon Macs in November 2020, Intel had become a millstone around the neck of Apple. Mac revenue had been stagnant. It was simply very difficult for Apple to create differentiated personal computers using the same processors that everyone else was using.</p><p>Apple Silicon Macs got another boost when the new MacBook Pros were introduced in October 2021. Fiscal 2022 Q1, Mac revenue grew by 25% y/y, a higher growth rate than any other product category that quarter. And Mac went on to grow by 14.6% y/y in Fiscal 2022 Q2, a growth rate second only to Services.</p><p>Analysts may not have fully grasped the impact of Apple Silicon. IDC claimed that Mac unit shipments in calendar 2021 Q4 (Apple&#39;s fiscal 2022 Q1) only grew by 8.6% y/y, but that would imply a large ASP increase given the 25% revenue growth. Gartner also claimed that Mac unit sales had only increased by 6.2% y/y.</p><p>Apple has been careful to price Apple Silicon Macs comparably to their Intel-based predecessors, so I&#39;m inclined to think that the analysts are simply underestimating the impact of Apple Silicon. This seems to have continued into Apple&#39;s Fiscal Q2. For calendar 2022 Q1,IDC estimated Mac unit shipment growth at just 4.3% y/y and Gartner estimated unit shipment growth at 8.6%.</p><p>It appears that analysts still have not accepted the notion that Apple is making serious market share gains in the traditional PC space, but Apple Silicon<i>has</i>made an impact on the tech media. It&#39;s difficult to find a review of an Intel-based laptop that doesn&#39;t compare it to the new MacBook Pro. And when it comes to energy efficiency, there is no comparison.</p><p><b>But Even The Mac Studio Leaves Something To Be Desired In Graphics Performance</b></p><p>I&#39;ve been delighted with the energy efficiency and computational power of my Apple Silicon MacBook Pro, but when I wanted to upgrade my desktop workstation, I passed over the Mac Studio for my own dual Ice Lake Xeon system build with an Nvidia (NVDA) RTX 3090 graphics card.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/33dcd497924e073bebf485aa059edd5f\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"419\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p><i>But no HDMI 2.1. Source:</i> <i>Apple.</i></p><p>The M1 Ultra in the Mac Studio is a clever melding of two M1 Max SOCs. Its CPU processing power is phenomenal, even edging out my dual Xeon system in Geekbench Multicore. But in graphics, Apple&#39;s claim at the launch that it would outperform the 3090 just didn&#39;t pan out.</p><p>Numerous reviewers have spotted this, so I&#39;ll just point out one, The Verge:</p><blockquote>We ran Geekbench Compute, which tests the power of a system&#39;s GPU, on both the Mac Studio and a gaming PC with an RTX 3090, a Core i9-10900, and 64GB of RAM. And the Mac Studio got… destroyed. It got less than half the score that the RTX 3090 did on that test - not only is it not beating Nvidia&#39;s chip, but it&#39;s not even coming close.</blockquote><p>And it doesn&#39;t come close in most other practical use cases or benchmarks. Apple&#39;s internal GPU puts every other iGPU in the PC world to shame, but it just can&#39;t compete with discrete GPUs that are as large as silicon foundries can make.</p><p>In addition to the lack of graphics horsepower, there&#39;s another limitation of the Studio which Apple has been a little cagey about, and that&#39;s the HDMI port. Apple doesn&#39;t say in their specs which HDMI version is in the Studio, but it appears to be HDMI 2.0.</p><p>The latest generation of graphics cards generally support HDMI 2.1. What&#39;s the difference? HDMI 2.1 supports driving 8K displays at 60 fps. HDMI 2.0 does not. Apple advertises that it can &#34;output&#34; 8K video, but that may simply apply to transcoding within an editing app. You can&#39;t actually watch 8K 60p video or drive an 8K display at 60 fps with Mac Studio&#39;s HDMI port, although there may be an unsupported workaround for Thunderbolt.</p><p>Given that almost any PC workstation with a current generation graphics card has HDMI 2.1 built in, I consider the Mac Studio&#39;s lack of support for HDMI 2.1 to be almost unforgivable. 8K is clearly the future, and professional videographers have already migrated to 8K and 12K cameras and 8K displays. My own workstation drives an 8K60p display.</p><p><b>What&#39;s Taking So Long With The Mac Pro?</b></p><p>Which brings us to the long awaited Apple Silicon Mac Pro, that presumably will be free of the shortcomings of the Mac Studio. I was a little disappointed that Apple didn&#39;t preview the new Mac Pro at WWDC. It would have been a logical venue that they&#39;ve used in the past for that purpose.</p><p>This conveys to me that Apple is still struggling with what the new Mac Pro should be. I think Apple would like it to be an all-in-one SOC design, perhaps using multiple chiplets.</p><p>Current technology has converged on the CPU and GPU being discrete chips in separate packages. Even the most advanced design concepts for supercomputers still make use of this fundamental division of labor.</p><p>So, if Apple is to build a truly competitive professional workstation, it probably needs to figure out how to accommodate a discrete GPU in the Mac Pro. Along those lines, Apple also has to decide whether to support third party GPUs.</p><p>When Apple debuted the Mac Studio, they announced that the Mac Pro was still on the way (by way of reassurance) and that the M1 Ultra would be the last of the M1 series. To me, this indicates that Apple had realized by that time (March 2022) that the current M1 series would not be suitable for the future Mac Pro.</p><p>Future more advanced SOCs in the M2 series can be expected to address the architectural issues I&#39;ve raised: support for much more capable graphics, more advanced display capability, and hopefully, even higher CPU core counts. How Apple decides these issues may still be in doubt within the company.</p><p>In the meantime, Apple has to soldier along with Xeon-based Mac Pros, which Apple disparages every chance it gets in favor of Apple Silicon:</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/b819366077bd56f5b94dabf2c261e104\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"1084\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p><i>Source:</i> <i>Apple.</i></p><p><b>Apple&#39;s Over-Dependence On Intel&#39;s Thunderbolt</b></p><p>So far, every Apple Silicon Mac has used Thunderbolt as its primary interface to the outside world. But Thunderbolt is proprietary Intel technology, and every Mac Thunderbolt port has an Intel chip sitting behind it.</p><p>This is another area where the divorce from Intel is incomplete, and it provides an explanation for the HDMI limitation, not only in the Mac Studio, but also every other Apple Silicon Mac that offers HDMI.</p><p>Apple appears to be driving the HDMI video through the Intel Thunderbolt interface chips. Thunderbolt 4 tops out at a data rate (40 Gbit/sec) just shy of what would be required for HDMI 2.1, so Apple can&#39;t support HDMI 2.1 without completely changing the data paths and creating a separate interface for it.</p><p>While the limitations of Thunderbolt may be acceptable for M1 series Macs, it clearly would have been a disaster to limit the external interface of the Mac Pro to Thunderbolt. Apple tried that with the cylindrical Mac Pro, and we all know how that worked out.</p><p>There may even have been some thought of going that route and marketing what would become the Mac Studio as the new Apple Silicon Mac Pro. I&#39;m sure that once they got the device in front of some focus groups, it was quickly realized that professional users expected a workstation with PCIE expansion capability.</p><p>Apple should shift its interface focus from Thunderbolt to PCIE. PCIE is more versatile than Thunderbolt, and PCIE Gen 5 will be faster for x2 lanes and above. Almost every PC interface you can think of, USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, and graphics are ultimately driven by PCIE.</p><p>Building PCIE into its next generation of Apple Silicon would not only free it from dependence on Intel Thunderbolt, but would set it up to support the kind of Mac Pro that professional users want. This is an area where Apple should go with the flow. All modern x86 processors support PCIE interfaces on chip.</p><p><b>Investor Takeaways</b></p><p>The combination of performance and efficiency demonstrated by Apple Silicon is truly unparalleled, yet I&#39;ve come to realize that Apple will need to do more to win more PC market share.</p><p>The incomplete divorce from Intel points to some soft spots in the Apple Silicon approach. It may not be technically feasible to build an internal GPU that is truly competitive with a discrete GPU. But Apple needs to provide that level of performance by some means.</p><p>Thunderbolt is a useful interface that&#39;s very convenient and easy to use, but it&#39;s rather constricted compared to PCIE. The bandwidth advantage of PCIE is not going to go away any time in the near future.</p><p>If Apple adopts PCIE, then it has a straightforward path to solving its GPU needs and for providing a more capable interface for all of its Mac products. With PCIE, Apple can finally complete its divorce from Intel, and continue to grow market share for Apple Silicon Macs. Source: Apple.The Conversion From Intel To Apple Silicon Has Been A Smashing SuccessBy the time that Apple introduced the first Apple Silicon Macs in November 2020, Intel had become a millstone around the neck of Apple. Mac revenue had been stagnant. It was simply very difficult for Apple to create differentiated personal computers using the same processors that everyone else was using.Apple Silicon Macs got another boost when the new MacBook Pros were introduced in October 2021. Fiscal 2022 Q1, Mac revenue grew by 25% y/y, a higher growth rate than any other product category that quarter. And Mac went on to grow by 14.6% y/y in Fiscal 2022 Q2, a growth rate second only to Services.Analysts may not have fully grasped the impact of Apple Silicon. IDC claimed that Mac unit shipments in calendar 2021 Q4 (Apple's fiscal 2022 Q1) only grew by 8.6% y/y, but that would imply a large ASP increase given the 25% revenue growth. Gartner also claimed that Mac unit sales had only increased by 6.2% y/y.Apple has been careful to price Apple Silicon Macs comparably to their Intel-based predecessors, so I'm inclined to think that the analysts are simply underestimating the impact of Apple Silicon. This seems to have continued into Apple's Fiscal Q2. For calendar 2022 Q1,IDC estimated Mac unit shipment growth at just 4.3% y/y and Gartner estimated unit shipment growth at 8.6%.It appears that analysts still have not accepted the notion that Apple is making serious market share gains in the traditional PC space, but Apple Siliconhasmade an impact on the tech media. It's difficult to find a review of an Intel-based laptop that doesn't compare it to the new MacBook Pro. And when it comes to energy efficiency, there is no comparison.But Even The Mac Studio Leaves Something To Be Desired In Graphics PerformanceI've been delighted with the energy efficiency and computational power of my Apple Silicon MacBook Pro, but when I wanted to upgrade my desktop workstation, I passed over the Mac Studio for my own dual Ice Lake Xeon system build with an Nvidia (NVDA) RTX 3090 graphics card.But no HDMI 2.1. Source: Apple.The M1 Ultra in the Mac Studio is a clever melding of two M1 Max SOCs. Its CPU processing power is phenomenal, even edging out my dual Xeon system in Geekbench Multicore. But in graphics, Apple's claim at the launch that it would outperform the 3090 just didn't pan out.Numerous reviewers have spotted this, so I'll just point out one, The Verge:We ran Geekbench Compute, which tests the power of a system's GPU, on both the Mac Studio and a gaming PC with an RTX 3090, a Core i9-10900, and 64GB of RAM. And the Mac Studio got… destroyed. It got less than half the score that the RTX 3090 did on that test - not only is it not beating Nvidia's chip, but it's not even coming close.And it doesn't come close in most other practical use cases or benchmarks. Apple's internal GPU puts every other iGPU in the PC world to shame, but it just can't compete with discrete GPUs that are as large as silicon foundries can make.In addition to the lack of graphics horsepower, there's another limitation of the Studio which Apple has been a little cagey about, and that's the HDMI port. Apple doesn't say in their specs which HDMI version is in the Studio, but it appears to be HDMI 2.0.The latest generation of graphics cards generally support HDMI 2.1. What's the difference? HDMI 2.1 supports driving 8K displays at 60 fps. HDMI 2.0 does not. Apple advertises that it can \"output\" 8K video, but that may simply apply to transcoding within an editing app. You can't actually watch 8K 60p video or drive an 8K display at 60 fps with Mac Studio's HDMI port, although there may be an unsupported workaround for Thunderbolt.Given that almost any PC workstation with a current generation graphics card has HDMI 2.1 built in, I consider the Mac Studio's lack of support for HDMI 2.1 to be almost unforgivable. 8K is clearly the future, and professional videographers have already migrated to 8K and 12K cameras and 8K displays. My own workstation drives an 8K60p display.What's Taking So Long With The Mac Pro?Which brings us to the long awaited Apple Silicon Mac Pro, that presumably will be free of the shortcomings of the Mac Studio. I was a little disappointed that Apple didn't preview the new Mac Pro at WWDC. It would have been a logical venue that they've used in the past for that purpose.This conveys to me that Apple is still struggling with what the new Mac Pro should be. I think Apple would like it to be an all-in-one SOC design, perhaps using multiple chiplets.Current technology has converged on the CPU and GPU being discrete chips in separate packages. Even the most advanced design concepts for supercomputers still make use of this fundamental division of labor.So, if Apple is to build a truly competitive professional workstation, it probably needs to figure out how to accommodate a discrete GPU in the Mac Pro. Along those lines, Apple also has to decide whether to support third party GPUs.When Apple debuted the Mac Studio, they announced that the Mac Pro was still on the way (by way of reassurance) and that the M1 Ultra would be the last of the M1 series. To me, this indicates that Apple had realized by that time (March 2022) that the current M1 series would not be suitable for the future Mac Pro.Future more advanced SOCs in the M2 series can be expected to address the architectural issues I've raised: support for much more capable graphics, more advanced display capability, and hopefully, even higher CPU core counts. How Apple decides these issues may still be in doubt within the company.In the meantime, Apple has to soldier along with Xeon-based Mac Pros, which Apple disparages every chance it gets in favor of Apple Silicon:Source: Apple.Apple's Over-Dependence On Intel's ThunderboltSo far, every Apple Silicon Mac has used Thunderbolt as its primary interface to the outside world. But Thunderbolt is proprietary Intel technology, and every Mac Thunderbolt port has an Intel chip sitting behind it.This is another area where the divorce from Intel is incomplete, and it provides an explanation for the HDMI limitation, not only in the Mac Studio, but also every other Apple Silicon Mac that offers HDMI.Apple appears to be driving the HDMI video through the Intel Thunderbolt interface chips. Thunderbolt 4 tops out at a data rate (40 Gbit/sec) just shy of what would be required for HDMI 2.1, so Apple can't support HDMI 2.1 without completely changing the data paths and creating a separate interface for it.While the limitations of Thunderbolt may be acceptable for M1 series Macs, it clearly would have been a disaster to limit the external interface of the Mac Pro to Thunderbolt. Apple tried that with the cylindrical Mac Pro, and we all know how that worked out.There may even have been some thought of going that route and marketing what would become the Mac Studio as the new Apple Silicon Mac Pro. I'm sure that once they got the device in front of some focus groups, it was quickly realized that professional users expected a workstation with PCIE expansion capability.Apple should shift its interface focus from Thunderbolt to PCIE. PCIE is more versatile than Thunderbolt, and PCIE Gen 5 will be faster for x2 lanes and above. Almost every PC interface you can think of, USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, and graphics are ultimately driven by PCIE.Building PCIE into its next generation of Apple Silicon would not only free it from dependence on Intel Thunderbolt, but would set it up to support the kind of Mac Pro that professional users want. This is an area where Apple should go with the flow. All modern x86 processors support PCIE interfaces on chip.Investor TakeawaysThe combination of performance and efficiency demonstrated by Apple Silicon is truly unparalleled, yet I've come to realize that Apple will need to do more to win more PC market share.The incomplete divorce from Intel points to some soft spots in the Apple Silicon approach. It may not be technically feasible to build an internal GPU that is truly competitive with a discrete GPU. But Apple needs to provide that level of performance by some means.Thunderbolt is a useful interface that's very convenient and easy to use, but it's rather constricted compared to PCIE. The bandwidth advantage of PCIE is not going to go away any time in the near future.If Apple adopts PCIE, then it has a straightforward path to solving its GPU needs and for providing a more capable interface for all of its Mac products. With PCIE, Apple can finally complete its divorce from Intel, and continue to grow market share for Apple Silicon Macs.
