The disappointing forecast overshadowed plans to buy back as much as $500 million of stock and its second straight quarterly profit — albeit on an adjusted basis.</p><p>After years of spending to gain market share and fend off competition, Grab is taking steps to become a more financially mature company. It’s focusing on the bottom line after years of swift expansion into markets from Malaysia to Thailand. Like backer Uber Technologies Inc., it’s slashed jobs and reined in spending to pivot toward profitability. Uber also announced its first buyback this month.</p><p>But the effort on the bottom line coincides with a dramatic slowdown in growth from the triple-digit pace of past years, underscoring the impact of economic uncertainty and competition. Revenue rose just 30% in the December quarter, its slowest pace of growth since at least 2022.</p><p>The challenging market has forced Grab and its rivals to consider aggressive options. Grab and GoTo have this year revived discussions about a merger of their core businesses, Bloomberg News reported, an alliance that could help stem spending to chase consumers across the region. Grab had also been linked to talks to take over the Foodpanda brand in several markets, but negotiations fell through because parties couldn’t agree on deal terms.</p><p>Shares of Grab are down sharply since it went public through a US blank-check company in late 2021. Still, they’ve stabilized this year as losses narrowed, outperforming its main regional rivals.</p><p>On Thursday, it reported $35 million in adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization, lagging estimates for $38.9 million. Grab also reported positive free cash flow for the December quarter, though again on an adjusted basis. I&#39;ve visited Thailand and Philippines over the years and you will see green Grab delivery riders everywhere.</p><p>The company is so dominant that Uber (UBER) sold its operations to Grab and bought a stake in the company as a blatant surrender move.</p><p>In this article, I&#39;ll give you a general breakdown of Grab and share several reasons why I&#39;m bullish on the company long term.</p><h2>Grab Overview</h2><p>Grab was founded in 2016 by Singapore Billionaire Anthony Tan who had a vision of building a super-app for Southeast Asia.</p><p>Southeast Asia is made up of 8 countries and has a total population of 683 million people.</p><p>It&#39;s one of the fastest growing economies in the world thanks to massive technological advances and foreign investment.</p><p>Grab operates in 4 key segments: Delivery, Mobility, Financial Services, and Enterprise Services (Advertising for businesses).</p><p>The American ride sharing &amp; food delivery industry has many competitors such as Uber, Lyft (LYFT), DoorDash (DASH), and several other small companies who compete aggressively for the huge $ tide sharing market.</p><p>On the other hand, Grab only has 1 competitor in Southeast Asia called Foodpanda, a smaller company based out of Europe.</p><h2>Record Q2 Revenue and GMV</h2><p>The company hit record Q2 revenue of $321 million (Up 79% YoY) along with record Q2 GMV of $5.1 billion (Up 30% YoY).</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/aca6a4b7afe32d866b123c7ad3bc5973\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"356\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>Grab Q2 2022 Financials (grab.com)</span></p><p>Monthly Transacting Users (MTAs) reached 32.6 million (Up 12% YoY) with 62% of users using 2 or more services on the app.</p><p>Net losses were $572 million, which was a 27% improvement from Q2 2021.</p><p>Grab continues to grow its MTA and establish a massive footprint in Southeast Asia. year.</p><p>Grab’s super app offers a variety of services but the company continues to struggle to turn a profit.</p><p>The digital services company released its 2022’s second quarter (2Q2022) earnings recently and disclosed that it was also going into advertising (GrabAds) and mapping and location-based services (GrabMaps).</p><p>Blue-chip telco Singtel (SGX: Z74) has also partnered with Grab to launch a digital bank, GXS Bank, after clinching the Singapore digital full bank licence in December 2020.</p><p>With so much going on, could shares of the company be poised for a rebound?</p><p><b>A mixed set of financials</b></p><p>2Q2022 saw Grab’s revenue surge 79% year on year to US$321 million as the company enjoyed broad-based revenue growth across all its divisions.</p><p>Its Deliveries segment saw revenue soar nearly three-fold year on year from US$45 million to US$134 million due to contributions from Jaya Grocer, a mass-premium supermarket chain in Malaysia, that Grab acquired a majority stake in January this year.</p><p>For its Mobility division, revenue rose 37% year on year to US$161 million in line with a surge in domestic and international travel and easing restrictions for offices and leisure commutes.</p><p>Together, both divisions make up close to 92% of Grab’s total revenue.</p><p>However, Grab continued to report losses for the quarter, though the loss had reduced by 29% year on year from US$801 million to US$572 million.</p><p>It didn’t help that the ride-hailing company continued to burn cash.</p><p>The first half of 2022 (1H2022) saw negative free cash flow (FCF) of US$744 million, more than double the US$325 million negative FCF in the prior year.</p><p><b>Improved operating metrics</b></p><p>Although Grab’s financial numbers were weak, it managed to report encouraging operating statistics.</p><p>Gross merchandise value (GMV) for the company rose 30% year on year to US$5.1 billion.</p><p>Monthly transacting users (MTUs) increased by 12% year on year to 32.6 million, and around a third of these MTUs used three or more offerings in 2Q2022.</p><p>The Deliveries division saw GMV rise 19% year on year to US$2.5 billion while the Mobility segment’s GMV jumped 51% year on year to US$1 billion.</p><p>Grab’s Financial Services division saw total payments volume (TPV) climb 31% year on year to US$3.8 billion as loan disbursements grew and more users took up the division’s Buy Now, Pay Later products.</p><p><b>Fingers in (too) many pies</b></p><p>While it seems that Grab is gaining traction in growing its GMV and TPV, investors are increasingly focusing more on profitability than a “growth at all costs” model.</p><p>CFO Peter Oey is cognisant of this and has commented that management is accelerating Grab’s efforts to become profitable.</p><p>The problem is that the company seems to have its fingers in too many pies.</p><p>Mobility and food deliveries are both capital and manpower intensive, and both divisions have thus far not managed to break even.</p><p>There was also recent news that Grab’s competitor in Singapore, Foodpanda, had laid off around 5% of its staff to stay competitive.</p><p>Grab’s food delivery division could come under further pressure as demand tapers off when more people dine out in tandem with easing restrictions.</p><p>The company also has to shift capital to its Singapore digital bank initiative and has plans to also launch GXS Bank in Malaysia as a consortium comprising Malaysian investors, Singtel and Grab had clinched the Malaysian been a rough time for growth stocks this past year, and Grab Holdings (NASDAQ: GRAB) has not escaped the carnage.The high-profile ride-hailing cum food delivery company’s share price has skidded nearly 70% since it went public via a combination with a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC) in early December last year.Grab’s super app offers a variety of services but the company continues to struggle to turn a profit.The digital services company released its 2022’s second quarter (2Q2022) earnings recently and disclosed that it was also going into advertising (GrabAds) and mapping and location-based services (GrabMaps).Blue-chip telco Singtel (SGX: Z74) has also partnered with Grab to launch a digital bank, GXS Bank, after clinching the Singapore digital full bank licence in December 2020.With so much going on, could shares of the company be poised for a rebound?A mixed set of financials2Q2022 saw Grab’s revenue surge 79% year on year to US$321 million as the company enjoyed broad-based revenue growth across all its divisions.Its Deliveries segment saw revenue soar nearly three-fold year on year from US$45 million to US$134 million due to contributions from Jaya Grocer, a mass-premium supermarket chain in Malaysia, that Grab acquired a majority stake in January this year.For its Mobility division, revenue rose 37% year on year to US$161 million in line with a surge in domestic and international travel and easing restrictions for offices and leisure commutes.Together, both divisions make up close to 92% of Grab’s total revenue.However, Grab continued to report losses for the quarter, though the loss had reduced by 29% year on year from US$801 million to US$572 million.It didn’t help that the ride-hailing company continued to burn cash.The first half of 2022 (1H2022) saw negative free cash flow (FCF) of US$744 million, more than double the US$325 million negative FCF in the prior year.Improved operating metricsAlthough Grab’s financial numbers were weak, it managed to report encouraging operating statistics.Gross merchandise value (GMV) for the company rose 30% year on year to US$5.1 billion.Monthly transacting users (MTUs) increased by 12% year on year to 32.6 million, and around a third of these MTUs used three or more offerings in 2Q2022.The Deliveries division saw GMV rise 19% year on year to US$2.5 billion while the Mobility segment’s GMV jumped 51% year on year to US$1 billion.Grab’s Financial Services division saw total payments volume (TPV) climb 31% year on year to US$3.8 billion as loan disbursements grew and more users took up the division’s Buy Now, Pay Later products.Fingers in (too) many piesWhile it seems that Grab is gaining traction in growing its GMV and TPV, investors are increasingly focusing more on profitability than a “growth at all costs” model.CFO Peter Oey is cognisant of this and has commented that management is accelerating Grab’s efforts to become profitable.The problem is that the company seems to have its fingers in too many pies.Mobility and food deliveries are both capital and manpower intensive, and both divisions have thus far not managed to break even.There was also recent news that Grab’s competitor in Singapore, Foodpanda, had laid off around 5% of its staff to stay competitive.Grab’s food delivery division could come under further pressure as demand tapers off when more people dine out in tandem with easing restrictions.The company also has to shift capital to its Singapore digital bank initiative and has plans to also launch GXS Bank in Malaysia as a consortium comprising Malaysian investors, Singtel and Grab had clinched the Malaysian digital banking licences in April.Aside from hiring new roles for GXS Bank, Grab is also dabbling in however, is languishing near a 52-week low of S$1.46 and is down more than 10% year-to-date.</p><p>Here are five highlights from the retailer’s latest results.</p><h2 id=\"id_1011324800\">1. A strong set of results</h2><p>For 3Q 2023, Sheng Siong saw revenue rise 3.7% year on year to S$345.8 million.</p><p>Of the 3.7% increase, 2.2% was contributed by six new stores in Singapore with the remaining 63 stores reporting a 1.8% year-on-year revenue increase from better comparable store sales.</p><p>Sheng Siong’s five stores in China and the closure of its Yishuan Central store shaved off 0.3 percentage points for the year-on-year revenue increase.</p><p>With the cost of goods sold increasing just 2.3% year-on-year, gross profit improved by 6.9% year on year to S$105 million.</p><p>Operating profit inched up by 2.7% year on year to S$39.4 million while net profit increased by 5.7% year on year to S$34.8 million, boosted by a more than doubling of finance income to S$2.8 million.</p><p>For the first nine months of 2023 (9M 2023), the retailer reported a mixed set of earnings.</p><p>Revenue edged up 2.6% year on year to S$1.04 billion but net profit slipped 0.1% year on year to S$100.3 million.</p><p>The supermarket operator’s free cash flow for 9M 2023 jumped 20.1% year on year to S$125.1 million.</p><h2 id=\"id_3974617966\">2. Gross margin crosses 30%</h2><p>Management has done an admirable job in steadily raising the group’s gross margin over time.</p><p>For 3Q 2023, Sheng Siong’s gross margin crossed the 30% threshold to end at 30.3% and was higher than the prior year’s 29.4%.</p><p>The reason given was continual improvements to the sales mix, with its house brands yielding higher gross margins than external brands.</p><p>For 9M 2023, the gross margin stood at 29.9%, an improvement of 0.5 percentage points over 9M 2022’s 29.4%.</p><p>For more context, Sheng Siong has steadily increased its gross margin over the years from 27.4% in 2020 to 29.4% last year.</p><p>2023 may see another new high in gross margins for the group if it can carry on this momentum.</p><h2 id=\"id_239301565\">3. Steadily increasing its store count</h2><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/920e96920bf8a704b0faa2a12c39a4e3\" tg-width=\"1438\" tg-height=\"811\"/></p><p>Source: Sheng Siong’s 3Q 2023 Presentation Slides</p><p>The supermarket retailer continues to increase its presence in Singapore.</p><p>As of 30 September 2023, the group had 69 stores in Singapore and five in China.</p><p>One new store was opened in 3Q 2023 as the group reported 68 Singapore stores in the previous quarter.</p><p>A total of two new stores were opened in 9M 2023 and management’s expansion plan is to open at least three new stores per year.</p><p>Meanwhile, a new lease agreement was signed in September to open a sixth China store which is expected to be operational before the end of 2Q 2024.</p><h2 id=\"id_4014202906\">4. Macroeconomic challenges</h2><p>Despite the better results, Sheng Siong warns of macroeconomic headwinds that may dent its growth.</p><p>The recent Israel-Hamas war that broke out in early October could further disrupt the world economy and may cause a recession.</p><p>Climate change and the onset of the El Nino weather pattern may adversely affect agricultural yields and push inflation up.</p><p>Higher inflation will then increase food prices which will crimp consumer demand, thus affecting the group’s sales.</p><p>Elsewhere, competition in the supermarket industry is expected to remain fierce with more promotions being pushed by competitors.</p><p>Along with higher staff and utility costs, these factors will exert downward pressure on margins.</p><h2 id=\"id_2348234453\">5.
