It delivered a record 936,222 EVs to customers, grew revenue and net profit by 73% and 665%, respectively, and expanded free cash flow by 80% to $5 billion.</p><p>But note that the last paragraph started out by using the word &#34;lately.&#34; It&#39;s useful to also be aware that Tesla had never delivered a profitable year until 2020. It has been on the brink of bankruptcy a few times, most recently from 2017 to 2019. But as the worldwide transition from combustion engines into electric engines gained steam, Tesla was favorably positioned to capture the pent-up demand. And it did, as is evident by its solid numbers.</p><p>While the 2021 result was remarkable, it is still an outlier more than a norm. The biggest issue is that two profitable years provide little assurance that Tesla can sustain that in the coming years. As the car industry is highly cyclical, an economic downturn (such as a recession) will cause consumers to tighten their belts. When that happens, average folks tend to delay their purchase of high-value items like a car, which could reduce industry volume. We still do not know how Tesla will perform in such an environment.</p><p>On top of that, the EV race has intensified in recent years. While Tesla is still the dominant player -- with a 21% global market share in 2021, according to Autocar -- incumbents like <b>General Motors</b> and <b>Ford Motor Company</b> have big plans to ramp up their production. Tesla also faces competition from Chinese car companies like <b>BYD</b> and <b>Nio</b>. The former, backed by Warren Buffett, sold 593,745 EVs in 2021. BYD also announced that it would stop producing combustion engine vehicles to focus on EVs and plug-in hybrids.</p><p>In short, Tesla must execute flawlessly in the coming years to maintain its market share and stay profitable. While we do not know whether the company can sustain its strong execution, there is <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> thing we do know for sure: Gone are the days when Tesla had the whole EV market to itself.</p><h2><b>2. Does Tesla stock offer a margin of safety?</b></h2><p>Ask any investor how to make money in the stock market, and the usual reply will be to buy a stock when the price is low and sell when the price is high. However, this argument is incomplete since an investor should also consider the intrinsic value of the stock. The key is to buy when the stock price is lower than the intrinsic value (and sell when it is above).</p><p>But estimating intrinsic value is not a simple task. Not only are there many methods to calculate the intrinsic value of a company, but every investor will use different variables to compute. It is fair to say that every investor will arrive at a different intrinsic value for the same company.</p><p>Enter: margin of safety. The idea is that when investors buy a stock at a price materially lower than its intrinsic value, they have room for errors in their estimation of its value. Even if they make mistakes, they generally lose little money since they buy the stock cheaply.</p><p>So is Tesla&#39;s stock cheap enough today to offer a margin of safety to investors? Let us consider a few simple metrics. As of writing, Tesla has a price-to-sales (P/S), price-to-book (P/B), and price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 21, 35, and 209. Comparatively, General Motors&#39; P/S, P/B, and P/E ratios are 0.5, 1, and 5.9, respectively.</p><p>Tesla bulls will immediately cry foul, claiming that Tesla is fundamentally a different company from GM. While I agree with them that Tesla is not an average company, my argument is this: Is it worth 30 to 40 times more than GM? Or put it differently, is one Tesla equivalent to 30 to 40 GMs? To me, the answer is probably not.</p><h2><b>Back to the original question: Is Tesla stock safe to buy?</b></h2><p>There is no doubt that Tesla is a company with promising prospects. It is a leader in the EV industry and has significant investments in potentially major industries like autonomous vehicles, renewable energy, and others.</p><p>Still, I don&#39;t think it&#39;s safe to buy Tesla stock now with your hard-earned money. One reason is the company just turned profitable in 2020. It would need a few more profitable years before investors can safely assume the turnaround is permanent. Besides, its valuation is not cheap, which offers a very little margin of safety for investors.</p><p>So unless investors are looking for some adrenaline rush, they will be better off staying from the stock. One reason is the company just turned profitable in 2020. It would need a few more profitable years before investors can safely assume the turnaround is permanent. Besides, its valuation is not cheap, which offers a very little margin of safety for investors.So unless investors are looking for some adrenaline rush, they will be better off staying from the stock. She still believes we’re suffering deflation and are in the midst of a recession.</p><p>Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell has misread the environment in comparing this period to the late 1970s and early ‘80s, Wood said in a webinar. That’s when then-Fed Chairman Paul Volcker pushed interest rates way higher to quell inflation.</p><p>“Powell believes that he too is slaying the inflation dragon,” Wood said. “But we don’t believe the Fed’s task is anything like the late ‘70s and early ‘80s.”</p><p>Back then, the economy took 15 years to “work up an inflation frenzy,” she said. “This is more like a 15-month problem.”</p><p>So, “to use the same resolve this time will prove to be a mistake,” Wood said. “We think we’re already in a recession.”</p><p>She considers consumer-price gauges a lagging indicator. At which time, the air will come out of Tesla&#39;s stock.</p><p><b>Autos vs. Recession</b></p><p>Recessions get nasty for auto manufacturers. History has shown that it doesn&#39;t matter who you are, when big recessions hit, auto earnings not only decline but usually go negative in this capital-intensive industry. To be fair to Musk, he did tweet this back in 2020, when the stock was at $140 per share:</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/7a940e22f55a558f3d8e8d882e91469a\" tg-width=\"602\" tg-height=\"334\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Elon Musk Tweet (Quora)</p><p>TSLA currently has a 1% earnings yield on what is likely an industry peak. It appears to us that Elon&#39;s getting out.</p><p>With the proceeds, Musk is attempting to buy Twitter (TWTR) outright. Keep in mind that Musk is not only focusing his time and attention on this, but to SpaceX, which is arguably a more promising business. The space industry is projected to reach $1 trillion in revenue by 2040.</p><p><b>A Fundamental Look At Tesla&#39;s Growth</b></p><p>Tesla is going global and getting closer to its customer base, with new factories in Shanghai, China, as well as Berlin, Germany. You would think this move would expand Tesla&#39;s market share. But from 2020 to 2021, Tesla&#39;s global market share actually shrank from17%to just under14%.</p><p>Competition is coming from everywhere. With a 14% market share, Tesla is more likely to lose share than to gain it. Companies like Honda (HMC) (OTCPK:HNDAF), BMW (OTCPK:BMWYY), Ford (F), GM (GM), Hyundai (OTCPK:HYMTF), Jaguar, Kia (OTCPK:KIMTF), Mazda (OTCPK:MZDAY) (OTCPK:MZDAF), Mercedes (OTCPK:DDAIF) (OTCPK:DMLRY), Mitsubishi, Nissan (OTCPK:NSANY) (OTCPK:NSANF), Stellantis (STLA), Subaru (OTCPK:FUJHY) (OTCPK:FUJHF), Toyota (TM) (OTCPK:TOYOF), Volkswagen (OTCPK:VWAGY) (OTCPK:VLKAF) (OTCPK:VWAPY), and Volvo (OTCPK:VOLAF) (OTCPK:VLVLY) (OTCPK:VOLVF) are all adding EVs to their lineups. Many of these companies have strong and entrenched brands and are partnering with EV titans like BYD (OTCPK:BYDDF). On top of that, they&#39;re producing EVs that are more affordable for the average consumer.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/78163ed4a8e14f033b94ab5f7ab5ba04\" tg-width=\"664\" tg-height=\"701\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Global EV Market Share (Statista)</p><p>Tesla&#39;s margins could also decrease. A cooler economy, increased competition, and used EVs coming online means the price of buying an EV could actually fall over time. Tesla&#39;s benefited from government credits, but these credits could dissipate now that EV companies like Tesla are profitable and highly valued.</p><p>To understand where Tesla is going, we need to understand where the industry is going. The number of electric vehicles sold globally is projected to grow at 17.5% per annum through to 2030. Tesla&#39;s energy business has grown revenue at21% per annum over the past 3 years.</p><p>95% of Tesla&#39;s revenue still comes from the automotive arm:</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/27d7141d89fbc6299c4d310ef0e3a6d2\" tg-width=\"1268\" tg-height=\"344\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Tesla&#39;s Revenue Breakdown (2021 Annual Report)</p><p>Given the market share, margins, and industry risks, we estimate Tesla will simply match the growth of global EV sales, growing 17.5% per annum. The energy business should continue to grow and become profitable, which will partially make up for the issues cited above.</p><p><b>The Valuation</b></p><p>Our 2032 price target for TSLA is $683 per share, indicating a return of 0% per annum, with no dividends.</p><ul><li>Tesla has earnings of $7.78 per share, giving it a PE of nearly 100. If Tesla&#39;s EPS should grow at 17.5% per annum, we get 2032 earnings of $39 per share. While the typical car company trades at just 10x normalized earnings, Tesla continues to benefit from the transition to EVs, and should have a more prominent footprint in clean energy generation and storage in 2032. We&#39;ve applied a terminal multiple of 17.5x earnings, which is a 75% premium to the average car company. Remember, the auto business is cyclical, competitive, and prone to bankruptcy. It&#39;s difficult to justify a higher multiple unless our risks to the thesis play out.</li></ul><p><b>Risks To The Thesis</b></p><p>Tesla&#39;s future is very up in the air. Elon Musk has all sorts of stories for investors revolving around autonomous drive, robotics, ride-sharing, and artificial intelligence. However, we do not yet have substantial revenues from Musk&#39;s many grand ideas. When those revenues do materialize, the businesses are likely to be loss-making, much like TSLA&#39;s energy business thus far. If Tesla's EPS should grow at 17.5% per annum, we get 2032 earnings of $39 per share. While the typical car company trades at just 10x normalized earnings, Tesla continues to benefit from the transition to EVs, and should have a more prominent footprint in clean energy generation and storage in 2032. We've applied a terminal multiple of 17.5x earnings, which is a 75% premium to the average car company. Remember, the auto business is cyclical, competitive, and prone to bankruptcy. Since debuting about four years ago, assets in the funds totaled around $13.6 billion as of mid-July and took in $5.4 billion in 2022, according to Bloomberg data provided by Innovator ETFs.</p><p>The ETFs protect against a preset amount of losses. Most set loss protection at roughly the first 10%, 15%, or 30% of market downside, and are designed to be held for a full 12 months, although like all ETFs they can be bought or sold at any time.</p><p>For example, the Innovator U.S. Equity Power Buffer ETF–July (ticker: PJUL) protected against the first 15% of losses in the SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF (SPY) for the 12 months ended June 30, 2022. It lost only 0.8%, reflecting the fund’s expense ratio of 0.79%. During that time, the S&amp;P ETF fell 11.87%.</p><p>A similar ETF, FT Cboe Vest U.S. Equity Buffer ETF–June (FJUN) from First Trust, protected investors against the first 10% of losses in the SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF during the 12 months ended June 17. It saw losses of 2.7% (including expenses of 0.85%), compared with the S&amp;P’s loss of 11.8%.</p><p>Dave Alison, president of Prosperity Capital Advisors, who uses buffered ETFs as an bond alternative to create portfolio ballast, says these ETFs offered loss protection for clients when the Federal Reserve’s interest-rate hikes caused both stocks and bonds to fall. “They’ve done exactly what they should do in the portfolio,” he says.</p><p>There are 149 defined-outcome ETFs available. They follow major indexes, such as the S&amp;P 500, the Nasdaq 100, or the MSCI EAFE. The five main issuers are Innovator ETFs, First Trust ETFs, Allianz, Pacer, and True Shares, with the first two having the vast majority of market share.</p><h3>Guardrails for Your Portfolio</h3><p>How two representative defined-outcome ETFs work.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/35cd540afaa3fb3acb311fb45f18a90f\" tg-width=\"950\" tg-height=\"576\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/>Most issuers offer a monthly series of defined-outcome ETFs, with the outcome period typically starting on the first trading day of each month, although some offer quarterly products. The funds don’t expire—after the 12-month period is over, they reset to wherever the underlying index trades at that time.</p><p>While each issuer has its own methodology, they all use call and put options to establish the position and offset losses in the index they track. Because hedging is often expensive, the funds sell higher-priced calls to finance the trade. In return, gains are limited, and downside is defined. (Puts give holders the right, but not the obligation, to sell a stock at a set price at a set time, while calls give holders the right, but not the obligation, to buy.)</p><p>While the ETFs can be bought or sold at any time, to receive the advertised buffer and cap when the ETF resets, investors have to hold the fund through the full outcome period, which is typically one year from the day that the outcome period starts, says Bruce Bond, CEO of Innovator ETFs, which pioneered the strategy.</p><p>Once the ETF starts to trade, the daily return of the fund will change to reflect market movement and to keep the buffer and cap guardrails consistent. For example, for the period from July 1, 2022, to June 30, 2023, Innovator established the July U.S. Equity Power Buffer downside buffer at 15% and its upside cap at 17.42%, based on the price of the SPDR S&amp;P 500 on July 1.</p><p>Three weeks into trading, as the S&amp;P 500 rallied, the cap dwindled to 14.7% but the buffer expanded to 16.4%, to stay in line with the original outcome period value.</p><p>The fund’s return on July 21 was 2.2%, which is what investors would receive if they sold that day, while the S&amp;P ETF’s return was 5.5%. There are two reasons for the return difference, Bond says: the expense ratio and the slight time lag that options have when keeping up with the reference asset.</p><p>There are simpler ways retail investors can try to protect themselves from equity market swings, such as low-volatility equity ETFs, says Aniket Ullal, head of ETF data and analytics at CFRA Research. While he’s a fan of defined-outcome strategies, he says it takes time to understand how they work.</p><p>Defined-outcome ETFs are similar to other risk-management products such as structured notes, which are securities issued by financial institutions linked to an underlying index or another benchmark. Daniel Milan, managing partner of Cornerstone Financial Services, who uses buffered ETFs and other structured products in his portfolio, says these ETFs give retail investors access to strategies long used by financial advisors and institutions in an easy-to-use vehicle. ETFs provide more flexibility, since they can be easily bought or sold and users benefit from ETFs’ inherent tax efficiency.</p><p>“Now they can go into their E*Trade account and type in a ticker symbol and buy it,” he says.</p><p>There are some caveats. The ETFs are significantly more expensive than the S&amp;P 500 ETF or the Nasdaq-based Invesco QQQ ETF (QQQ), which annually cost 0.09% and 0.20%, respectively. Yet Hagen Pruemm, a financial advisor at SIS Financial Group, says if individual investors were to create these options trades on their own, it would be much more work, and much more costly. He uses these ETFs as a way to reduce volatility in equity portfolios.</p><p>The biggest caveat are the funds’ upside caps; in strong bull markets, such as 2021’s, they will underperform. That’s seen in the return of the Innovator U.S. Equity Buffer ETF–January (BJAN), which had an outcome period of Jan. 1, 2021 to Dec. 31, 2021. This fund had a 15% downside buffer and a 15% cap. Nonetheless, the risks are also inherent that many companies may slow down their Capex investments in the next few quarters, given the impending recession and rising interest rates. Consequently, NVDA may also reduce its R&amp;D expenses for the short term, given the potential deceleration in revenue growth.</p><p><b>NVDA Projected Revenue and Net Income</b></p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d2badc1948a2e2ab65b118973f20c6a4\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"395\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>S&amp;P Capital IQ</span></p><p>Over the next three years, NVDA is expected to report impressive revenue and net income growth at a CAGR of 18.99% and 27.19%, respectively. As a result, we expect a mixed FQ1&#39;23 performance, potentially leading to a further decline in its stock performance. We shall see.</p><p><b>So, Is NVDA Stock A Buy, Sell, Or Hold?</b></p><p>NVDA is currently trading at an EV/NTM Revenue of 11.93x, and NTM P/E of 30x, lower than its 5Y mean of 13.34x and 39.91x, respectively. The stock is also trading at $171.24 on 19 May 2022, down 50% from 52 weeks high of $346.47. Some 36.4 million shares worth S$41.2 million were traded.The trio of local banks also fell on Monday. DBS lost 2 percent to S$32.42, UOB lost 0.7 percent to S$26.09, while OCBC lost 1 percent to S$11.48.The top gainer on the STI was Thai Beverage, rising 3.5 percent to close at S$0.585. Some 44.6 million shares worth S$25.6 million changed hands, making it one of the top traded counters by volume on Monday.Elsewhere in Asia, key indices were mixed. The FTSE Bursa Malaysia Index gained 0.3 percent, the SSE Composite Index rose 0.4 percent, while the Hang Seng Index was up by 0.2 percent.
