Vietnam has brought the bank’s regional retail customer count to over seven million as at March 31.</p><p>When it completes its acquisition of Citi’s consumer business in Indonesia, the bank’s customer count will have close to eight million customers, says UOB.</p><p>“Our transformative decision to acquire Citigroup’s consumer businesses in four Asean markets during the pandemic has proven to be very timely, positioning us well as consumer spending returns with a vengeance,” says Jacquelyn Tan, head of group personal financial services at UOB.</p><p>The four markets are also expected to provide an additional $1 billion to UOB’s revenue on a full-year basis in addition to building stronger resilience with diversification in its geographical and revenue mix.</p><p>Prior to the acquisition, 70% of UOB’s portfolio was in Singapore versus 30% in the region. After the acquisition, UOB’s Singapore portfolio is now at 60% compared to the region’s 40%.</p><p>In the 1QFY2023 ended March, UOB saw its net credit card fees almost doubling y-o-y with Citi’s portfolio contributing a quarter to the amount. Loans and deposits grew by almost 10% and 15% y-o-y in the 1QFY2023 as well following the acquisition.</p><p>During the same period, the Asean-4, which is made up of Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam accounted for over 35% of the bank’s group personal financial services income. UOB’s network of branches in Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam also grew by 15 as of March.</p><p>In the 1QFY2023, total cross-border billings for UOB’s credit cards in Asean grew almost three times y-o-y.</p><p>The bank’s total income from its unsecured business is also expected to almost double by the end of FY2023.</p><p>Following the acquisition, UOB is now the top in consumer card spend for <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/V\">Visa</a> in Asean. The bank is also the top issuer of MasterCard for credit cards in the region, notes Tan.</p><p>“These are two huge achievements, altogether. [It] also speaks of the size and the presence that we have individual countries on top of Singapore,” she says.</p><p>In Singapore, about 1.3 million UOB credit cards are in use today, which translates to about one in two cardholders in Singapore that holds a card from the bank.</p><p>“Aside from the Citi acquisition that loaded about close to - by the end of the four countries - more than two million customers organically. Annually, we onboard about 800,000 customers, of which more than 50% are digitally acquired through our UOB TMRW platform. That is a nice complement of both organic as well as inorganic growth to build up our franchise,” she adds.</p><p>According to UOB, the figures bode well and are in line with the bullish forecasts for Asean and the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region compared to the rest of the world. After the acquisition, UOB’s Singapore portfolio is now at 60% compared to the region’s 40%.In the 1QFY2023 ended March, UOB saw its net credit card fees almost doubling y-o-y with Citi’s portfolio contributing a quarter to the amount. Loans and deposits grew by almost 10% and 15% y-o-y in the 1QFY2023 as well following the acquisition.During the same period, the Asean-4, which is made up of Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam accounted for over 35% of the bank’s group personal financial services income. UOB’s network of branches in Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam also grew by 15 as of March.In the 1QFY2023, total cross-border billings for UOB’s credit cards in Asean grew almost three times y-o-y.The bank’s total income from its unsecured business is also expected to almost double by the end of FY2023.Following the acquisition, UOB is now the top in consumer card spend for Visa in Asean. The bank is also the top issuer of MasterCard for credit cards in the region, notes Tan.“These are two huge achievements, altogether. [It] also speaks of the size and the presence that we have individual countries on top of Singapore,” she says.In Singapore, about 1.3 million UOB credit cards are in use today, which translates to about one in two cardholders in Singapore that holds a card from the bank.“Aside from the Citi acquisition that loaded about close to - by the end of the four countries - more than two million customers organically. It will be built just outside Monterrey in Nuevo León, with Tesla&#39;s official rendering seen below.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/c6393fa0adf88ab0b5ee4f1d70947745\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"309\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Tesla Gigafactory Mexico(Investor Day Presentation)</p><p>As was expected, Tesla&#39;s future plan is about the transitioning the world to sustainable energy. This came with a large math lesson, which can be seen here if you need to know the exact details. However, the keys involve powering the grid with renewable energy sources, increasing the number of electric vehicles in use, and reducing the extraction of minerals. On the EV side, Tesla believes its next generation vehicle can be produced for 50% less, which then will allow it to become more affordable. Part of the reduction in cost is making the production process much simpler. That reduces the time it will take to build the vehicle, which then can allow for higher production over time.</p><p>Investors and consumers had high hopes that Tesla would unveil its $25,000 vehicle at this week&#39;s event. This is a vehicle that Musk has teased for several years now, but it was not shown off here. Management said that this next generation platform will get a proper reveal in the future, but again, there was no timeline provided for when that will be. This more affordable vehicle is expected to be a key part of Tesla&#39;s battle in China against many local brands, so for now the company will be limited to the Model 3 and Y there.</p><p>In an article I had published recently, I discussed how previous statements around full self-driving (&#34;FSD&#34;) capabilities and robo-taxis could lead to significant liabilities for Tesla down the road. There were hopes that more concrete information would be delivered Wednesday about the robo-taxi platform and service, but we didn&#39;t get a lot of details outside of how FSD and Autopilot have improved over the years. There also wasn&#39;t a major discussion about FSD Hardware version 4 or whether or not it is in cars yet, so perhaps an official announcement about that will come in the coming weeks or months.</p><p>Tesla did use the event to show off its latest Cybertruck prototype and focused on some of its key features. Management reiterated that production will start this year, which will be about three years late. However, there was some disappointment that no official timeline was given, and Tesla didn&#39;t update on the price of the vehicle. Mass production won&#39;t occur until 2024 at the earliest, so investors shouldn&#39;t be banking on a major contribution to overall results in the next couple of quarters.</p><p>One of the biggest disappointments for shareholders in the near term was the financial discussion. Tesla CFO Zach Kirkhorn discussed how the company&#39;s working capital needs to bounce around throughout the quarter, and what the cost of this sustainable energy future will cost. As a result, there was no official announcement of a share repurchase plan that would at least offset some of the dilution investors are facing over time. This has been a key part of the bull case in recent months, with some major Tesla fans and investors pushing the company to put its large cash pile to use. For now, however, the plan is to build the business, and then return capital afterwards.</p><p>I have listened to many of Tesla&#39;s presentations and quarterly earnings calls, and this one was perhaps the most painful. The main presentation featured at least 10 key parts and was over two and a half hours long, and I counted at least 17 different executives that spoke. There was a lot of discussion about things that have already happened in Tesla, much of which I don&#39;t think needed to be regurgitated. For example, we didn&#39;t need to hear for a few minutes how a Tesla produces less emissions than a Toyota Corolla. The average investor doesn&#39;t need to know every single detail about how Tesla reacted to some event from several years ago or every last technical specification about certain vehicle components.</p><p>I mentioned that this event was another example of buy the rumor, sell the news. Tesla shares had more than doubled from their early 2023 lows, partially on the hopes for this week&#39;s event. Unfortunately, the lack of critical details on many fronts left investors with a sour taste. island, mostly in heartland areas.</p><p>The retailer has proven resilient during downturns as it sells a wide variety of necessities and essential household items along with fresh foods.</p><p>These items should continue to enjoy consistent demand even during a recession.</p><p>The group reported a sturdy set of earnings for the first nine months of this year (9M2022).</p><p>Revenue dipped 1.9% year on year to S$1 billion but net profit remained flat year on year at S$100 million.</p><p>Free cash flow generated for 9M2022 remained healthy at S$104.2 million.</p><p>Sheng Siong paid out a trailing 12-month dividend of S$0.0625, with its shares yielding 3.7%.</p><p>Looking ahead, the group seeks to increase its network of stores in Singapore where it does not have a presence.</p><p>It recently signed a lease agreement to open its fifth store in Kunming, China, to be operational by the second quarter of this year.</p><p><b>ComfortDelGro Corporation Limited (SGX: C52)</b></p><p>ComfortDelGro, or CDG, is one of the world’s largest land transport companies with a fleet of 34,000 taxis, buses and rental vehicles with operations in seven countries.</p><p>The group reported a respectable set of earnings for 9M2022 with revenue rising 7.9% year on year to S$2.8 billion.</p><p>Net profit jumped 31% year on year to S$153 million as economies reopened and with more countries opening up for travel.</p><p>CDG paid out an interim dividend of S$0.0285 and a special dividend of S$0.0141 from the sale of a UK property.</p><p>Together with the final dividend of S$0.021 paid last year, CDG’s trailing 12-month dividend stands at S$0.0636, giving its shares a trailing dividend yield of 5.2%.</p><p>If the special dividend was excluded, the dividend yield comes in at a still-respectable 4%.</p><p>The group has been busy in recent months.</p><p>In November, it clinched three Sydney metropolitan bus tenders worth A$1.7 billion.</p><p>And just this week, CDG announced a US$4 million investment into a teleoperation software company to strengthen its autonomous vehicle capabilities.</p><p><b>Keppel Corporation (SGX: BN4)</b></p><p>Keppel Corporation is a blue-chip conglomerate with four core divisions – energy and environment, urban development, connectivity, and asset management.</p><p>For 9M2022, the group reported a 24% year on year jump in revenue to S$6.8 billion.</p><p>9M2022 net profit also improved year on year, contributed by strong performances from Energy and Environment and Asset Management divisions.</p><p>Keppel also announced that asset monetisation has approached S$4.4 billion and is on track to exceed its target of S$5 billion by the end of this year.</p><p>The group declared and paid out an interim dividend of S$0.15, a 25% year on year increase, as net profit for 1H2022 surged by 66% year on year.</p><p>Coupled with Keppel’s final dividend of S$0.21 for FY2021, the trailing 12-month dividend stood at S$0.36, giving its fiscal 2023’s first half (1H2023) ending 30 September 2022 on the back of soaring air travel demand.</p><p>SIA investors looking for income are finally getting some reprieve.</p><p>We had previously opined that SIA couldrestart its dividendsnext year, but the blue-chip carrier did even better.</p><p>It has resumed paying outdividendsfor 1H2023 after a three-year hiatus.</p><p>The outlook is bright for SIA even though the airline warned of potential macroeconomic headwinds in the coming months.</p><p>Here are some highlights that investors should take note of in the group’s 1H2023 earnings report.</p><h2><b>A record-high operating profit</b></h2><p>For 1H2023, SIA reported total revenue of S$8.4 billion, tripling the S$2.8 billion clocked in 1H2022.</p><p>This strong performance was because of a surge in air travel demand as Singapore reopened its borders to fully-vaccinated passengers.</p><p>SIA, along with its sister airline Scoot, was also quick to capture pent-up demand with the launch of Singapore’sVaccinated Travel Lanesscheme in September last year.</p><p>As a result, SIA’s passenger numbers hit 11.4 million for 1H2023, up more than 13-fold from the 828,500 in the same period last year.</p><p>An operating profit of S$1.2 billion was generated for 1H2023, the highest ever for the SIA group.</p><p>Net profit came in at S$927 million, reversing the S$837 net loss in the prior year.</p><p>SIA saw its balance sheet strengthen considerably, with cash and investments totalling S$17.8 billion, up from S$16.1 billion in the first quarter.</p><p>The airline also generated a robust operating cash flow of S$4.9 billion along with a free cash flow of S$3.9 billion.</p><p>Because of the strong cash generation, the carrier will use S$3.86 billion to fully redeem its Mandatory Convertible Bonds that were issued in June 2020.</p><p>It also declared an interim dividend of S$0.10 per share, higher than the interim dividend of S$0.08 that was declared in November 2019, before the pandemic.</p><h2><b>Growing its fleet and network</b></h2><p>SIA has continued to grow its fleet with the addition of two Airbus A350-900 aircraft to its operating fleet.</p><p>The quarter also saw two Boeing 737-8 aircraft rejoin the group’s operating fleet after undergoing a cabin retrofit.</p><p>As of 30 September 2022, SIA’s fleet consisted of 131 passenger aircraft and seven freighters with an average age of six years and four months, making SIA one of the youngest and most fuel-efficient fleets in the airline industry.</p><p>Meanwhile, the airline also reinstated services to several destinations in Asia such as Shenzhen, Beijing and Fuzhou in China, and Osaka in Japan.</p><p>For 1H2023, the group’s passenger network covered 100 destinations in 36 countries and territories while its cargo network served 107 destinations.</p><p>Scoot, SIA’s low-cost carrier, will resume flights to Hokkaido via Taipei this month and commence seasonal flights to Kuantan, Malaysia, from November 2022 to February next year.</p><p>With the resumption of these routes, group capacity is targeted to reach around 76% in the second half of fiscal 2023.</p><h2><b>Collaborations and partnerships</b></h2><p>Elsewhere, SIA also announced a collaboration with the Tata Group in India to explore a possible integration of Vistara and Air India.</p><p>By doing so, the group can strengthen its multi-hub strategy and help it to extend its presence in one of the largest aviation markets in the world.</p><p>On the cargo side, SIA has partnered with logistics company DHL Express to increase the former’s cargo footprint in the e-commerce sector.</p><p>This move will help to cement the group’s status as an important international air freight hub.</p><h2><b>Buoyant demand tempered by high inflation</b></h2><p>Demand is expected to hold up as the group heads into the year-end peak travel season.</p><p>The holiday season should also see ticket sales improving for destinations such as Hong Kong, Taipei and Japan.</p><p>However, air cargo demand is projected to weaken as macroeconomic headwinds hit consumer demand and importers work to clear high inventory levels.</p><p>SIA may have reported a record operating profit, but investors should note that this was on the back of an almost two-year absence in air travel.</p><p>Once the pent-up demand peters out, the airline will have to grapple with a mix of high fuel costs, normalised demand and the spectre of a possible global recession.</p><p>In addition,high inflationwill wait has been worthwhile for shareholders of Singapore Airlines Limited(SGX: C6L), or SIA.The airline released a stellar set of financial numbers for its fiscal 2023’s first half (1H2023) ending 30 September 2022 on the back of soaring air travel demand.SIA investors looking for income are finally getting some reprieve.We had previously opined that SIA couldrestart its dividendsnext year, but the blue-chip carrier did even better.It has resumed paying outdividendsfor 1H2023 after a three-year hiatus.The outlook is bright for SIA even though the airline warned of potential macroeconomic headwinds in the coming months.Here are some highlights that investors should take note of in the group’s 1H2023 earnings report.A record-high operating profitFor 1H2023, SIA reported total revenue of S$8.4 billion, tripling the S$2.8 billion clocked in 1H2022.This strong performance was because of a surge in air travel demand as Singapore reopened its borders to fully-vaccinated passengers.SIA, along with its sister airline Scoot, was also quick to capture pent-up demand with the launch of Singapore’sVaccinated Travel Lanesscheme in September last year.As a result, SIA’s passenger numbers hit 11.4 million for 1H2023, up more than 13-fold from the 828,500 in the same period last year.An operating profit of S$1.2 billion was generated for 1H2023, the highest ever for the SIA group.Net profit came in at S$927 million, reversing the S$837 net loss in the prior year.SIA saw its balance sheet strengthen considerably, with cash and investments totalling S$17.8 billion, up from S$16.1 billion in the first quarter.The airline also generated a robust operating cash flow of S$4.9 billion along with a free cash flow of S$3.9 billion.Because of the strong cash generation, the carrier will use S$3.86 billion to fully redeem its Mandatory Convertible Bonds that were issued in June 2020.It also declared an interim dividend of S$0.10 per share, higher than the interim dividend of S$0.08 that was declared in November 2019, before the pandemic.Growing its fleet and networkSIA has continued to grow its fleet with the addition of two Airbus A350-900 aircraft to its operating fleet.The quarter also saw two Boeing 737-8 aircraft rejoin the group’s operating fleet after undergoing a cabin retrofit.As of 30 September 2022, SIA’s fleet consisted of 131 passenger aircraft and seven freighters with an average age of six years and four months, making SIA one of the youngest and most fuel-efficient fleets in the airline industry.Meanwhile, the airline also reinstated services to several destinations in Asia such as Shenzhen, Beijing and Fuzhou in China, and Osaka in Japan.For 1H2023, the group’s passenger network covered 100 destinations in 36 countries and territories while its cargo network served 107 destinations.Scoot, SIA’s low-cost carrier, will resume flights to Hokkaido via Taipei this month and commence seasonal flights to Kuantan, Malaysia, from November 2022 to February next year.With the resumption of these routes, group capacity is targeted to reach around 76% in the second half of fiscal 2023.Collaborations and partnershipsElsewhere, SIA also announced a collaboration with the Tata Group in India to explore a possible integration of Vistara and Air India.By doing so, the group can strengthen its multi-hub strategy and help it to extend its presence in one of the largest aviation markets in the world.On the cargo side, SIA has partnered with logistics company DHL Express to increase the former’s cargo footprint in the e-commerce sector.This move will help to cement the group’s status as an important international air freight hub.Buoyant demand tempered by high inflationDemand is expected to hold up as the group heads into the year-end peak travel season.The holiday season should also see ticket sales improving for destinations such as Hong Kong, Taipei and Japan.However, air cargo demand is projected to weaken as macroeconomic headwinds hit consumer demand and importers work to clear high inventory levels.SIA may have reported a record operating profit, but investors should note that this was on the back of an almost two-year absence in air travel.Once the pent-up demand peters out, the airline will have to grapple with a mix of high fuel costs, normalised demand and the spectre of a possible global recession.In addition,high inflationwill also raise operating expenses for the group as well as crimp consumer demand for air travel as we head into 2023.The skies may have cleared up in 1H2023, but should be prepared to fork out more in interest payments when they refinance their housing loans.</p><h2><b>Singapore retail sales</b></h2><p>Retail sales continued to rise in Singapore in August, continuing the trend seen in July.</p><p>Sales increased 13% year on year in August, slightly lower than the 13.9% year on year chalked up in the previous month.</p><p>The latest increase did fall below the 15.4% that analysts had expected.</p><p>The estimated total retail sales value for August came in at S$3.8 billion, of which online sales took up a 12.5% share.</p><p>Despite the slightly weaker numbers, August’s retail sales still represented a fifth consecutive month of double-digit year on year growth.</p><p>At the same time, elevated core inflation could dampen consumer demand in the months to come.</p><p>Along with higher interest rates, more households may tighten their belts and cut back on spending to service higher mortgage payments.</p><h2><b>SATS Ltd (SGX: S58)</b></h2><p>SATS has seen its share price lose a fifth of its value since it announced theacquisition of Worldwide Flight Servicesfor almost S$1.64 billion.</p><p>Investors were concerned that the ground handler will finance the deal with a potential rights issue to raise the required S$1.7 billion to finance the purchase.</p><p>CEO Kerry Mok has come out to assure investors that the group is looking out for their interests and that a rights issue is one of four funding sources for the mega-deal.</p><p>He also acknowledged that SATS will have to scale down the size of the rights issue as in his own words: “the market does not like rights issues”.</p><p>In its original announcement for the acquisition, SATS had presented a funding plan that will involve the issuance of 609 million new shares at S$2.79 apiece.</p><p>The rights issue price was a steep discount of 28% to the food caterer’s then-closing price of S$3.87.</p><p>Other funding sources put forward include an acquisition bridge facility of €1.2 billion (around S$1.7 billion), internal cash resources, and new strategic investors.</p><p>The group may also tap into a mixture of the four sources to come up with an optimal plan to fund the acquisition.</p><p>Mok reiterated that investors should take a medium to long-term view of this deal as it will bring about tremendous benefits to Whether you&#39;re a young investor looking to reinvest dividends to gain &#34;free&#34; shares along the way, or if you&#39;re a retiree looking for quarterly income, UPS may be the way to go to achieve your investment goals.</p><p>Over the past 10 years, the stock price has grown by 144%. And with the stock price already down by 22% since February, now could be a great time to get in on that hefty dividend action.</p><h2>2. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/KO\">Coca-Cola</a></h2><p><b>Coca-Cola</b> ( KO ) enjoys strong brand awareness among consumers. A possibly lesser-known fact -- though arguably as important -- is that the company holds a position in the elite ranks of Dividend Kings because it has increased its annual dividend for 60 consecutive years. With that status, it&#39;s no wonder Buffett has gone on record at times saying he would never sell a share of Coca-Cola stock, which currently ranks as the fourth-largest holding in his Berkshire portfolio.</p><p>The company synonymous with soft drinks has a product portfolio that has been expanding to include sports drinks, juices, teas, energy drinks (with coffee), sparking water, and alcoholic beverages.</p><p>In 2021, revenue grew by 17% year over year, helping push earnings per share up by 26%, driven by softening pandemic restrictions and growth in at-home and away-from-home channels. The company also completed its full purchase of BodyArmor, the No. 2 selling sports drink in the U.S.</p><p>Although the stock price has seen what some may consider mediocre growth over the past 10 years, at 69%, it offers investors the comfort of products that are in consistent demand, and its slow but steady revenue growth in the mid-single digits is expected to continue. Along with a consistent dividend payout, it makes for one of those foundational stocks you want in your portfolio that will keep paying dividends without the risk of tanking during down markets.</p><h2><b>3.</b> <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AAPL\">Apple</a></h2><p><b>Apple</b> ( AAPL  ) brings the flash and excitement that comes with technology that makes life more flexible. Innovative development has pushed revenue and share price growth, leading Buffett and his partners to make Apple far and away the top position in the Berkshire Hathaway portfolio at 43% of the total value.</p><p>Apple is synonymous with the smartphone, and has gone on to develop AirPods, the Apple Watch, and a new powerful processing chip -- the M1 Ultra -- for its computers. These products display the innovative leadership that allows the company to grow revenue by 29% year over year, to $378 billion in fiscal 2021, and earnings up 25% in the first quarter of fiscal 2022.</p><p>Moving into 2022 and beyond, growth catalysts include expanding its wearables product portfolio with virtual reality headsets expected in 2023, which could result in sales of 15 million units off the bat. The company will also benefit from a 5G push moving customers to 5G-capable iPhones, and its services business growing at a rate that Wedbush analyst Dan Ives believes could support double-digit earnings-per-share growth on its own. Based on 2021&#39;s jump of 12% in subscriptions across services, so far so good.</p><p>Broader market restraint is keeping tech stocks suppressed. With a little momentum, I could see Apple stock at $200 a share. First-quarter earnings come out on Thursday, April 28. A surprise to the upside could send Apple stock skyrocketing. Tesla was able to help offset the factory hiccups because it brought its Berlin factory online in March and opened its Texas factory in April.</p><p>Tesla&#39;s strong vehicle deliveries in the quarter translated into a staggering 87% increase in automotive revenue in the quarter to $16.9 billion. This came with a large math lesson, which can be seen here if you need to know the exact details. However, the keys involve powering the grid with renewable energy sources, increasing the number of electric vehicles in use, and reducing the extraction of minerals. On the EV side, Tesla believes its next generation vehicle can be produced for 50% less, which then will allow it to become more affordable. Part of the reduction in cost is making the production process much simpler. That reduces the time it will take to build the vehicle, which then can allow for higher production over time.</p><p>Investors and consumers had high hopes that Tesla would unveil its $25,000 vehicle at this week&#39;s event. This is a vehicle that Musk has teased for several years now, but it was not shown off here. Management said that this next generation platform will get a proper reveal in the future, but again, there was no timeline provided for when that will be. This more affordable vehicle is expected to be a key part of Tesla&#39;s battle in China against many local brands, so for now the company will be limited to the Model 3 and Y there.</p><p>In an article I had published recently, I discussed how previous statements around full self-driving (&#34;FSD&#34;) capabilities and robo-taxis could lead to significant liabilities for Tesla down the road. There were hopes that more concrete information would be delivered Wednesday about the robo-taxi platform and service, but we didn&#39;t get a lot of details outside of how FSD and Autopilot have improved over the years. There also wasn&#39;t a major discussion about FSD Hardware version 4 or whether or not it is in cars yet, so perhaps an official announcement about that will come in the coming weeks or months.</p><p>Tesla did use the event to show off its latest Cybertruck prototype and focused on some of its key features. Management reiterated that production will start this year, which will be about three years late. However, there was some disappointment that no official timeline was given, and Tesla didn&#39;t update on the price of the vehicle. Mass production won&#39;t occur until 2024 at the earliest, so investors shouldn&#39;t be banking on a major contribution to overall results in the next couple of quarters.</p><p>One of the biggest disappointments for shareholders in the near term was the financial discussion. Tesla CFO Zach Kirkhorn discussed how the company&#39;s working capital needs to bounce around throughout the quarter, and what the cost of this sustainable energy future will cost. As a result, there was no official announcement of a share repurchase plan that would at least offset some of the dilution investors are facing over time. This is its highest level since early 2012.</p><p>That’s even as the headline inflation print was stable on the month before at 5.4 percent – and a shade under the median estimate of 5.6 percent in a Bloomberg poll– as the growth in private transport costs eased on a smaller increase in car prices.</p><p>Still, private transport expenses were up by 18.3 percent in April, against 21.5 percent in March, while accommodation costs rose by 3.9 percent year on year in April, compared with 3.5 percent in March, on higher rents.</p><p>Private transport and accommodation inflation are expected to stay firm in the near term, according to projections from the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) and Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI).</p><p>The rising price of food continued to drive inflation in April, with costs higher by 4.1 percent year on year, up from 3.3 percent in March.</p><p>The MAS and MTI noted that “the prices of both non-cooked food and food services rose at a faster pace”. The price of oils and fats was up by 9.9 percent in April; milk, cheese and eggs by 6.7 percent; meat by 5.7 percent; and fish and seafood by 5.6 percent. Hawker fare was up by 4.2 percent, and restaurant food, by 3.8 percent.</p><p>Inflation in retail and other goods picked up to 1.6 percent, from 0.4 percent in March – attributed to an increase in apparel prices. Clothes cost 1.7 percent more year on year.</p><p>Electricity and gas prices grew by a steeper 19.7 percent in April, compared with 17.8 percent in March, as household electricity and gas tariffs went up in the second quarter.
