Nasdaq narrowly avoided its worst ever start to the year and the S&P 500 recorded its weakest January performance since 2009.

Valuations of growth and technology stocks have come under increasing scrutiny, as investors fretted about companies trading at lofty valuations at a time when the U.S. Federal Reserve is set to begin raising interest rates to combat inflation and withdraw its pandemic stimulus measures.

In early Monday trading, the Nasdaq was on course to surpass its worst opening-month performance on record, when it fell 9.89% in 2008. However, after its best one-day gain since March 2021, it closed out January down 8.99%.

"At the end of the day, interest rates are going to have to move higher, and companies with high multiples will have to trade lower," said Decio Nascimento, chief investment officer of Norbury Partners.

He added that, with costs such as wages rising, there will be increased investor focus on sectors that can better handle those inflationary pressures, with less latitude for companies which promise future growth but which currently generate negative cash flow.

All of the 11 major S&P sectors advanced, led by a 3.8% rise in consumer discretionary stocks. The gain was led by Tesla Inc, which jumped 10.7% after Credit Suisse raised the electric car maker's stock rating to "outperform".

For January though, consumer discretionary was the worst performing sector, slipping 9.7%. The U.S. planemaker secured a launch order from Qatar Airways for a new freighter version of its 777X passenger jet and a provisional order for 737 MAX jets.

Citrix Systems Inc's shares fell 3.4% after the software company said it had agreed to be taken private for $16.5 billion including debt by affiliates of Elliott Management and Vista Equity Partners.

Volume on U.S. exchanges was 12.67 billion shares, compared with the 12.37 billion average for the full session over the last 20 trading days.

The S&P 500 posted eight new 52-week highs and no new lows; The company’s revenue fell within its previously expected range, while losses on the basis of earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (Ebitda) were less steep than anticipated.

Peloton’s stock has endured quite the ride in recent years after coming public at $29 a share in September 2019. The company’s revenue fell within its previously expected range, while losses on the basis of earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (Ebitda) were less steep than anticipated.Peloton’s stock has endured quite the ride in recent years after coming public at $29 a share in September 2019. The stock closed as high as $167.42 in January 2021 as people flocked to its exercise bikes amid the pandemic, but it’s come crashing back down to earth since then amid a demand reset and now trades below its initial public offering price for the first time since April 2020.That massive selloff seems extreme, in the view of Stifel analyst Scott Devitt, given that the COVID-19 crisis helped Peloton find new demand for its offerings.“We believe the stock has over corrected relative to underlying business conditions and note that yesterday’s closing price is below pre-pandemic levels (February 2020) despite the company having a significantly larger subscriber base (+289% larger now than December 2019) and subscriber additions that are meaningfully outpacing prior levels off of a much larger base,” Devitt wrote. He upgraded Peloton’s stock to buy from hold Friday, while cutting his price target to $40 from $56.Other analysts remained mixed on Peloton’s status after the company’s latest comments and disclosures. While the company’s preliminary results were largely positive according to MKM Partners analyst Rohit Kulkarni, he noted that Peloton faces “several existential questions ahead.” In particular, he asks about the risk-reward balance for Peloton shares and whether the pandemic helped grow the company’s total addressable market (TAM).“It is hard to determine the near-term trends at Peloton, and thus we have low conviction that fundamentals have bottomed out as yet,” he wrote. Kulkarni thinks that the COVID-19 crisis “semi-permanently expanded the TAM for connected fitness products,” but he expects it will take at least six months for consumer behavior to stabilize toward a “new normal.”He rates the stock at neutral with a $30 fair-value target.Evercore ISI analyst Shweta Khajuria also suggested that Peloton needed more time to reset, a dynamic that could keep its shares “range bound.”“We continue to think PTON will likely face diminishing consumer demand (due to rising competition, reopening economies and mix-shift in consumer spend towards experiences), in addition to limited visibility with reduced backlogs, and the need to right size its operations by optimizing its fixed and variable cost structure,” she wrote, while maintaining an in-line rating and reducing her price target to $40 from $72.The stock has lost 84% over the past 12 months, while the Direxion Work From Home exchange-traded fund has lost 4.6% and the S&P 500 index has rallied over 15.7%.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":114,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9007050826,"gmtCreate":1642724330112,"gmtModify":1676533739948,"author":{"id":"4098347995407240","authorId":"4098347995407240","name":"Bernardwkc","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":7,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4098347995407240","authorIdStr":"4098347995407240"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"OK ","listText":"OK ","text":"OK","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":3,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9007050826","repostId":"2205013143","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2205013143","kind":"highlight","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Reuters.com brings you the latest news from around the world, covering breaking news in markets, business, politics, entertainment and technology","home_visible":1,"media_name":"Reuters","id":"1036604489","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/443ce19704621c837795676028cec868"},"pubTimestamp":1642715726,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2205013143?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2022-01-21 05:55","market":"us","language":"en","title":"US STOCKS-Wall Street Drops as Bargain-Hunting Loses Steam","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2205013143","media":"Reuters","summary":"* Stocks rebound fades day after Nasdaq correction* Peloton tumbles after report co is pausing produ","content":"

* Stocks rebound fades day after Nasdaq correction

* Peloton tumbles after report co is pausing production

* Travelers up after reporting record quarterly profit

* Indexes down: Dow 0.89%, S&P 1.1%, Nasdaq 1.3%

Jan 20 (Reuters) - Wall Street's main indexes ended sharply lower on Thursday and a rally in U.S. stocks evaporated late in the session as investors considered whether equities were bargains after a sell-off to start the year that has seen the Nasdaq fall into correction territory.

Major U.S. indexes had been gaining solidly for much of the day, following a steep drop to start the week.

The Nasdaq on Wednesday closed more that 10% below its November all-time high, confirming it was in a correction. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast weekly applications would rise to 208,000.In other strong U.S. data, the Chicago purchasing managers' index (PMI) delivered a print of 63.1, a monthly increase of 1.3 points and 1.1 points above consensus.A PMI number over 50 signifies expanded activity over the previous month.Equities have rallied recently on some of the thinnest trading volumes that U.S. stock exchanges have seen due to the holidays. Kulkarni thinks that the COVID-19 crisis “semi-permanently expanded the TAM for connected fitness products,” but he expects it will take at least six months for consumer behavior to stabilize toward a “new normal.”He rates the stock at neutral with a $30 fair-value target.Evercore ISI analyst Shweta Khajuria also suggested that Peloton needed more time to reset, a dynamic that could keep its shares “range bound.”“We continue to think PTON will likely face diminishing consumer demand (due to rising competition, reopening economies and mix-shift in consumer spend towards experiences), in addition to limited visibility with reduced backlogs, and the need to right size its operations by optimizing its fixed and variable cost structure,” she wrote, while maintaining an in-line rating and reducing her price target to $40 from $72.The stock has lost 84% over the past 12 months, while the Direxion Work From Home exchange-traded fund has lost 4.6% and the S&P 500 index has rallied over 15.7%.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":114,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9003117454,"gmtCreate":1640909451517,"gmtModify":1676533553140,"author":{"id":"4098347995407240","authorId":"4098347995407240","name":"Bernardwkc","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":7,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4098347995407240","authorIdStr":"4098347995407240"},"themes":[],"htmlText":" OK ","listText":" OK ","text":"OK","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":4,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9003117454","repostId":"2195928314","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2195928314","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1640899322,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2195928314?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2021-12-31 05:22","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Wall Street Closes Down, Indexes Still Poised for Big Annual Gains","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2195928314","media":"Reuters","summary":"Dec 30 (Reuters) - Wall Street closed lower on Thursday, retreating late in thin holiday volume from","content":"

Dec 30 (Reuters) - Wall Street closed lower on Thursday, retreating late in thin holiday volume from record highs set early in the session on strong U.S. data including a drop in weekly claims for U.S. unemployment benefits.

With one trading day left, the S&P 500 was set to end the year more than 27% higher, with the Nasdaq up about 23% and the Dow's annual rise just shy of 20%.
