on Thursday after the computers and iPhones tech giant announced plans to switch to using only recycled cobalt in its device batteries by 2025.  </p><p></p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/f242e3e828a229b4d7f0a026b6db5e9e\" tg-width=\"821\" tg-height=\"632\"/></p><h2>So what</h2><p>There are a couple of reasons why investors may be liking this latest Apple news. On one hand, it&#39;s a warm and fuzzy &#34;save the planet&#34; story as Apple moves to defuse criticism that the massive popularity of its devices is causing environmental issues by encouraging greater cobalt mining. Looking at the big picture, Apple is hoping to become entirely carbon-neutral by 2030, recycling not only cobalt, but also rare earth metals, tin soldering, gold plating, and even aluminum used in its products.  </p><p>At the same time, this is an economic story for Apple. According to a 2022 report from MacroPolo.org, cobalt is the single most expensive component (by weight) of rechargeable batteries, costing close to $60 per kilogram in 2021 -- about twice the price of lithium. So in announcing that it will recycle all its cobalt, Apple is presumably also aiming to cut the cost of its products -- and boost its own profit margins.  </p><h2>Now what</h2><p>Granted, just because Apple is recycling cobalt doesn&#39;t mean it&#39;s getting the recycled stuff for free. In fact, it may turn out that the cost of recycled cobalt is <em>greater</em> than the cost of buying newly mined cobalt. This remains to be seen -- and it&#39;s perhaps informative that in announcing its newest recycling initiative, Apple made no mention of cost savings.</p><p>That being said, the added &#34;green&#34; credentials of being a 100%-recycled consumer of cobalt should help to offset any additional cost for these consumers. On one hand, it's a warm and fuzzy \"save the planet\" story as Apple moves to defuse criticism that the massive popularity of its devices is causing environmental issues by encouraging greater cobalt mining. Looking at the big picture, Apple is hoping to become entirely carbon-neutral by 2030, recycling not only cobalt, but also rare earth metals, tin soldering, gold plating, and even aluminum used in its products.  At the same time, this is an economic story for Apple. According to a 2022 report from MacroPolo.org, cobalt is the single most expensive component (by weight) of rechargeable batteries, costing close to $60 per kilogram in 2021 -- about twice the price of lithium. So in announcing that it will recycle all its cobalt, Apple is presumably also aiming to cut the cost of its products -- and boost its own profit margins.  Now whatGranted, just because Apple is recycling cobalt doesn't mean it's getting the recycled stuff for free. or STE.</p><p>The blue-chip engineering and technology group clinched a total of S$13.1 billion in contracts last year, lifting its order book higher by 31% year on year to $S$23 billion.</p><p>The group’s contract-grabbing momentum has continued into this year as it recently announced a S$430 million contract win for providing rail services in Kaohsiung, Taiwan.</p><p>Parked under its Urban Solutions division, STE will commence the project in mid-2023 and will complete it by 2030, adding to the division’s impressive global track record of 200 smart metro projects in more than 50 cities.</p><p>This contract win should contribute positively to STE’s top line from this year onwards.</p><p>Income-seeking investors, though, will be curious to know if the engineering conglomerate has room to raise its dividends.</p><p>STE had just raised its annual dividend recently to S$0.16 from S$0.15 and is now paying out a quarterly dividend of S$0.04.</p><p>Let’s take a peek at the group’s financials and recent corporate events to determine if it can pay out more.</p><h2><b>A peek into its financials and cash flow</b></h2><p>STE reported a strong set of results for 2022, with revenue rising by 17.4% year on year to S$9 billion.</p><p>All its three segments posted year on year revenue growth, with Urban Solutions &amp; Satcom (USS) seeing the sharpest jump at 49% to hit S$1.77 billion.</p><p>After excluding government support and TransCore acquisition and integration expenses, STE’s operating profit surged by 55% year on year to S$729 million.</p><p>Adjusted net profit was 39% higher year on year at S$549 million.</p><p>If the one-off expenses were included, STE’s net profit would have dipped by 6.2% year on year to S$535 million.</p><p>Earnings per share would have slid by the same quantum to S$0.1718.</p><p>For 2022, STE also generated a negative free cash flow of S$293 million, reversing the positive free cash flow of S$685.5 million in 2021.</p><h2><b>Bulking up on contracts</b></h2><p>The good news is that the engineering group has made substantial progress in bulking up its order book.</p><p>Back during STE’s November 2021 Investor Day, management affirmed that the group will try to grow its annual revenue at two to three times the annual GDP growth rate to hit S$11 billion by 2026.</p><p>At S$9 billion last year, STE is inching closer to its target.</p><p>Its contract wins have also steadily increased over the years.</p><p>2022 saw S$13.1 billion of new contracts secured across all three of its divisions, more than the S$11.7 billion snagged in 2021.</p><p>This level of contract wins was also higher than 2020’s S$8.2 billion and 2019’s S$9.5 billion.</p><p>Of its S$23 billion order book as of 31 December 2022, S$7.2 billion is expected to be delivered this year.</p><p>While snagging contracts is good news for investors, a key variable to watch for is the margin that STE can obtain for each contract.</p><p>This margin will determine the net profit and cash flow the group can generate, which ultimately affects how much it can pay out in dividends.</p><h2><b>Becoming a leaner machine</b></h2><p>Aside from winning contracts, STE has also become leaner over the past year.</p><p>Last November, it divested its two US Marine businesses for around US$15 million as the division incurred an annual loss of around US$40 million to US$60 million over the past five years.</p><p>Four months later, STE’s Marine division acquired a new site in Singapore’s 55 Gul Road for S$95 million to expand its Singapore commercial ship repair business.</p><p>This new yard will replace its <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/TUA.AU\">Tuas</a> Shipyard when its lease expires in 2024 and will be upgraded to become a “smart” shipyard, utilising digitalisation to power the ship repair cycle and various processes.</p><p>Unlike its US counterpart, the Singapore marine division is profitable over the years and continues to grow.</p><h2><b>Get Smart: Patience is needed</b></h2><p>Collating the facts above, it seems unlikely that the engineering conglomerate will raise its dividend in 2023.</p><p>Based on earnings per share of S$0.1718, the dividend payout ratio stood high at 93.1%.</p><p>Furthermore, the group also generated negative free cash flow for 2022.</p><p>Its TransCore acquisition could be accretive this year and may contribute to earnings and cash flow.</p><p>Investors need to be patient to see if STE continues to clinch contracts and to assess if it can generate decent margins from them.</p><p>If the group’s financial numbers for 2023 are attractive, there is a good chance it can increase its dividends from 2024 was a strong year for Singapore Technologies Engineering, or STE.The blue-chip engineering and technology group clinched a total of S$13.1 billion in contracts last year, lifting its order book higher by 31% year on year to $S$23 billion.The group’s contract-grabbing momentum has continued into this year as it recently announced a S$430 million contract win for providing rail services in Kaohsiung, Taiwan.Parked under its Urban Solutions division, STE will commence the project in mid-2023 and will complete it by 2030, adding to the division’s impressive global track record of 200 smart metro projects in more than 50 cities.This contract win should contribute positively to STE’s top line from this year onwards.Income-seeking investors, though, will be curious to know if the engineering conglomerate has room to raise its dividends.STE had just raised its annual dividend recently to S$0.16 from S$0.15 and is now paying out a quarterly dividend of S$0.04.Let’s take a peek at the group’s financials and recent corporate events to determine if it can pay out more.A peek into its financials and cash flowSTE reported a strong set of results for 2022, with revenue rising by 17.4% year on year to S$9 billion.All its three segments posted year on year revenue growth, with Urban Solutions & Satcom (USS) seeing the sharpest jump at 49% to hit S$1.77 billion.After excluding government support and TransCore acquisition and integration expenses, STE’s operating profit surged by 55% year on year to S$729 million.Adjusted net profit was 39% higher year on year at S$549 million.If the one-off expenses were included, STE’s net profit would have dipped by 6.2% year on year to S$535 million.Earnings per share would have slid by the same quantum to S$0.1718.For 2022, STE also generated a negative free cash flow of S$293 million, reversing the positive free cash flow of S$685.5 million in 2021.Bulking up on contractsThe good news is that the engineering group has made substantial progress in bulking up its order book.Back during STE’s November 2021 Investor Day, management affirmed that the group will try to grow its annual revenue at two to three times the annual GDP growth rate to hit S$11 billion by 2026.At S$9 billion last year, STE is inching closer to its target.Its contract wins have also steadily increased over the years.2022 saw S$13.1 billion of new contracts secured across all three of its divisions, more than the S$11.7 billion snagged in 2021.This level of contract wins was also higher than 2020’s S$8.2 billion and 2019’s S$9.5 billion.Of its S$23 billion order book as of 31 December 2022, S$7.2 billion is expected to be delivered this year.While snagging contracts is good news for investors, a key variable to watch for is the margin that STE can obtain for each contract.This margin will determine the net profit and cash flow the group can generate, which ultimately affects how much it can pay out in dividends.Becoming a leaner machineAside from winning contracts, STE has also become leaner over the past year.Last November, it divested its two US Marine businesses for around US$15 million as the division incurred an annual loss of around US$40 million to US$60 million over the past five years.Four months later, STE’s Marine division acquired a new site in Singapore’s 55 Gul Road for S$95 million to expand its Singapore commercial ship repair business.This new yard will replace its Tuas Shipyard when its lease expires in 2024 and will be upgraded to become a “smart” shipyard, utilising digitalisation to power the ship repair cycle and various processes.Unlike its US counterpart, the Singapore marine division is profitable over the years and continues to grow.Get Smart: Patience is neededCollating the facts above, it seems unlikely that the engineering conglomerate will raise its dividend in 2023.Based on earnings per share of S$0.1718, the dividend payout ratio stood high at 93.1%.Furthermore, the group also generated negative free cash flow for 2022.Its TransCore acquisition could be accretive this year and may contribute to earnings and cash flow.Investors need to be patient to see if STE continues to clinch contracts and to assess if it can generate decent margins from them.If the group’s financial numbers for 2023 are attractive, there is a good chance it can increase its dividends from 2024 The European markets were sharply lower and the U.S. bourses were mixed and little changed and the Asian markets figure to follow the latter lead.</p><p>The STI finished sharply lower on Monday following losses from the financial shares, property stocks and industrial issues.</p><p>For the day, the index stumbled 45.06 points or 1.42 percent to finish at the daily low of 3,132.37 after peaking at 3,175.87.</p><p>Among the actives, Ascendas REIT was down 0.37 percent, while CapitaLand Integrated Commercial Trust tumbled 2.14 percent, CapitaLand Investment skidded 1.44 percent, City Developments slumped 1.50 percent, Comfort DelGro stumbled 1.68 percent, DBS Group weakened 1.45 percent, Emperador rallied 2.00 percent, Genting Singapore surrendered 1.92 percent, Hongkong Land eased 0.23 percent, Keppel Corp and Yangzijiang Financial both plummeted 2.56 percent, Mapletree Pan Asia Commercial Trust declined 1.81 percent, Mapletree Industrial Trust sank 1.32 percent, Mapletree Logistics Trust fell 1.24 percent, Oversea-Chinese Banking Corporation retreated 1.70 percent, SATS slipped 0.83 percent, SembCorp Industries shed 1.31 percent, Singapore Technologies Engineering slid 1.18 percent, SingTel lost 1.27 percent, Thai Beverage plunged 2.34 percent, United Overseas Bank dropped 1.36 percent, Wilmar International climbed 1.02 percent and Yangzijiang Shipbuilding tanked 2.29 percent.</p><p>The lead from Wall Street offers little clarity as the major averages spent most of Monday bouncing back and forth across the unchanged line before finally ending mixed and little changed.</p><p>The Dow dropped 90.50 points or 0.28 percent to finish at 31,819.14, while the NASDAQ added 49.96 points or 0.45 percent to close at 11,188.84 and the S&amp;P 500 dipped 5.83 points or 0.15 percent to end at 3,855.76.</p><p>The weakness that emerged on Wall Street came on continued concerns over the fallout from the Silicon Valley Bank collapse - which triggered heavy selling, particularly in the banking sector.</p><p>Over the weekend, the U.S. Treasury, Federal Reserve, and Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation said they would &#34;fully protect&#34; depositors, including those with assets above the federally guaranteed $250,000 limit, but traders were not reassured.</p><p>Investors are also nervous ahead of the ECB meeting and key inflation data due out later this week.</p><p>Crude oil prices fell sharply on Monday amid worries that a U.S. banking debacle may follow last week&#39;s collapse of Silicon Valley Bank. The rally was also fueled by a lower dollar and falling treasury yields.</p><p>Traders also continue to bet that the Federal Reserve may slow the pace of its interest rate hikes on the heels of some disappointing economic data earlier in the week.</p><p>Crude oil prices rose sharply Tuesday, extending gains from the previous session as traders continued to bet on hopes the OPEC will agree to a large cut in crude output later today. West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures for November settled at $86.52 a barrel, up $2.89 or 3.5 percent.</p><p>Closer to home, Singapore will release August data for retail sales and September results for its private sector PMI from S&amp;P Global later today. This is a rich valuation multiple that sits closer to the higher end of Apple’s historical P/E range, although not at the very peak.</p><p>But should 25.6x be considered a high number in today’s market environment? Let’s compare the figure to the forward P/E of Apple’s key competitors and tech giant peers. The more robust a company’s long-term earnings growth potential is, the richer its P/E tends or deserves to be.</p><p>So, in order to do a better “apples-to-apples” comparison (pun definitely intended) between the Cupertino company and its peer, I suggest the following approach to normalize for growth expectations: divide each stock’s P/E by the estimate for five-year earnings increase.</p><p>The resulting metric is what we call the PEG ratio, which stands for P/E-to-growth. The numerator in this equation adjusts for net cash on hand, and rewards companies that have better liquidity.</p><p>Using this valuation metric (see chart below), notice how NVIDIA sticks out as an absurdly pricey stock. The S&amp;P 500 index confirmed in June it was in a bear market, and on Monday it ended the session below its mid-June closing low, extending this year&#39;s overall selloff.</p><p>With the Fed signaling last Wednesday that high interest rates could last through 2023, the S&amp;P 500 has relinquished the last of its gains made in a summer rally.</p><p>&#34;Investors are just throwing in the towel,&#34; said Jake Dollarhide, Chief Executive Officer of Longbow Asset Management in Tulsa, Oklahoma. &#34;It&#39;s the uncertainty about the high-water mark for the Fed funds rate. Is it 4.6%, is it 5%? Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said during an address to the nation that the positions in the negotiations were beginning to &#34;sound more realistic.&#34;</p><p>Crude oil prices dropped Wednesday, extending losses to a third straight session after data showed a surprise surge in U.S. crude inventories, and amid hopes of some progress in Russia-Ukraine peace talks. West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures for April ended lower by $1.40 or 1.5 percent at $95.04 a barrel.</p><p>Closer to home, Singapore will release February data for non-oil domestic exports later today, with expectations for a decline of 0.3 percent on month and an increase of 15.7 percent on year.
