sets 2025 target of using 100% recycled cobalt in batteries","content":"

What happened

Shares of Apple enjoyed a 3.41% pop on Thursday after the computers and iPhones tech giant announced plans to switch to using only recycled cobalt in its device batteries by 2025.

So what

There are a couple of reasons why investors may be liking this latest Apple news. On one hand, it's a warm and fuzzy "save the planet" story as Apple moves to defuse criticism that the massive popularity of its devices is causing environmental issues by encouraging greater cobalt mining. Looking at the big picture, Apple is hoping to become entirely carbon-neutral by 2030, recycling not only cobalt, but also rare earth metals, tin soldering, gold plating, and even aluminum used in its products.

At the same time, this is an economic story for Apple. According to a 2022 report from MacroPolo.org, cobalt is the single most expensive component (by weight) of rechargeable batteries, costing close to $60 per kilogram in 2021 -- about twice the price of lithium. So in announcing that it will recycle all its cobalt, Apple is presumably also aiming to cut the cost of its products -- and boost its own profit margins.

Now what

Granted, just because Apple is recycling cobalt doesn't mean it's getting the recycled stuff for free. In fact, it may turn out that the cost of recycled cobalt is greater than the cost of buying newly mined cobalt. This remains to be seen -- and it's perhaps informative that in announcing its newest recycling initiative, Apple made no mention of cost savings.

That being said, the added "green" credentials of being a 100%-recycled consumer of cobalt should help to offset any additional cost for these consumers. For ESG-focused consumers (and investors), it could even turn into a deciding factor when choosing whether to buy an iPhone, for example, or an Android phone -- or whether to invest in Apple stock versus Samsung.

Factor in even the potential for cost savings as recycling technology improves over time, and this news looks like a plus for Apple -- maybe not big enough of a plus to justify paying 27 times earnings for a stock growing profits at only 8% per year, but a plus nonetheless.

","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Why Apple Stock Popped over 3% on Thursday
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nWhy Apple Stock Popped over 3% on Thursday\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2023-04-14 11:40 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
What happenedShares of Apple enjoyed a 3.41% pop on Thursday after the computers and iPhones tech giant announced plans to switch to using only recycled cobalt in its device batteries by 2025. Singapore stock market has finished higher in two of three trading days since the end of the fiv","content":"

The Singapore stock market has finished higher in two of three trading days since the end of the five-day losing streak in which it had stumbled almost 150 points or 4.8 percent. The Straits Times Index now rests just beneath the 3,140-point plateau and it's looking at continued strength on Wednesday.

The global forecast for the Asian markets is upbeat on continued bargain hunting, particularly among the technology stocks and energy companies. The European and U.S. markets were sharply higher and the Asian bourses are predicted to follow that lead.

The STI finished sharply higher on Tuesday with gains across the board, especially the financial shares, property stocks and industrial issues.

For the day, the index climbed 31.81 points or 1.02 percent to finish at 3,138.90 after trading between 3,128.62 and 3,154.30. Volume was 919.8 million shares worth 966.49 million Singapore dollars. There were 277 gainers and 88 decliners.

Among the actives, Ascendas REIT strengthened 1.89 percent, while CapitaLand Integrated Commercial Trust gathered 1.05 percent, CapitaLand Investment surged 2.96 percent, City Developments soared 2.78 percent, DBS Group perked 0.69 percent, Emperador rose 1.04 percent, Genting Singapore improved 1.27 percent, Hongkong Land added 1.11 percent, Keppel Corp increased 1.17 percent, Mapletree Pan Asia Commercial Trust accelerated 2.34 percent, Mapletree Industrial Trust rallied 2.14 percent, Mapletree Logistics Trust advanced 1.31 percent, Oversea-Chinese Banking Corporation climbed 1.45 percent, SembCorp Industries added 0.32 percent, Singapore Technologies Engineering was up 0.57 percent, SingTel rose 0.38 percent, United Overseas Bank collected 0.31 percent, Wilmar International gained 1.08 percent, Yangzijiang Financial spiked 2.74 percent, Yangzijiang Shipbuilding jumped 1.96 percent and Comfort DelGro, Thai Beverage and SATS were unchanged.

The lead from Wall Street is broadly positive for the second straight day as the major averages opened sharply higher on Tuesday and stayed that way throughout the session.

The Dow surged 825.43 points or 2.80 percent to finish at 30,316.32, while the NASDAQ soared 360.97 points or 3.34 percent to end at 11,176.41 and the S&P 500 spiked 112.50 points or 3.06 percent to close at 3,790.93.

The continued strength on Wall Street came as investors scooped up bargains following a brutal September. The rally was also fueled by a lower dollar and falling treasury yields.

Traders also continue to bet that the Federal Reserve may slow the pace of its interest rate hikes on the heels of some disappointing economic data earlier in the week.

Crude oil prices rose sharply Tuesday, extending gains from the previous session as traders continued to bet on hopes the OPEC will agree to a large cut in crude output later today. West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures for November settled at $86.52 a barrel, up $2.89 or 3.5 percent.

Closer to home, Singapore will release August data for retail sales and September results for its private sector PMI from S&P Global later today. In July, retail sales were up 0.6 percent on month and 7.86 percent on year, while the index score was 56.0 in August.

","source":"lsy1637539882596","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Higher Open Predicted For Singapore Stock Market
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nHigher Open Predicted For Singapore Stock Market\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2022-10-05 07:55 GMT+8 RTT News\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
The Singapore stock market has finished higher in two of three trading days since the end of the five-day losing streak in which it had stumbled almost 150 points or 4.8 percent. There were 277 gainers and 88 decliners.Among the actives, Ascendas REIT strengthened 1.89 percent, while CapitaLand Integrated Commercial Trust gathered 1.05 percent, CapitaLand Investment surged 2.96 percent, City Developments soared 2.78 percent, DBS Group perked 0.69 percent, Emperador rose 1.04 percent, Genting Singapore improved 1.27 percent, Hongkong Land added 1.11 percent, Keppel Corp increased 1.17 percent, Mapletree Pan Asia Commercial Trust accelerated 2.34 percent, Mapletree Industrial Trust rallied 2.14 percent, Mapletree Logistics Trust advanced 1.31 percent, Oversea-Chinese Banking Corporation climbed 1.45 percent, SembCorp Industries added 0.32 percent, Singapore Technologies Engineering was up 0.57 percent, SingTel rose 0.38 percent, United Overseas Bank collected 0.31 percent, Wilmar International gained 1.08 percent, Yangzijiang Financial spiked 2.74 percent, Yangzijiang Shipbuilding jumped 1.96 percent and Comfort DelGro, Thai Beverage and SATS were unchanged. The lead from Wall Street is broadly positive for the second straight day as the major averages opened sharply higher on Tuesday and stayed that way throughout the session. The Dow surged 825.43 points or 2.80 percent to finish at 30,316.32, while the NASDAQ soared 360.97 points or 3.34 percent to end at 11,176.41 and the S&P 500 spiked 112.50 points or 3.06 percent to close at 3,790.93.The continued strength on Wall Street came as investors scooped up bargains following a brutal September. The rally was also fueled by a lower dollar and falling treasury yields.Traders also continue to bet that the Federal Reserve may slow the pace of its interest rate hikes on the heels of some disappointing economic data earlier in the week.Crude oil prices rose sharply Tuesday, extending gains from the previous session as traders continued to bet on hopes the OPEC will agree to a large cut in crude output later today. West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures for November settled at $86.52 a barrel, up $2.89 or 3.5 percent.Closer to home, Singapore will release August data for retail sales and September results for its private sector PMI from S&P Global later today. In July, retail sales were up 0.6 percent on month and 7.86 percent on year, while the index score was 56.0 in August.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":132,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9083143636,"gmtCreate":1650082592275,"gmtModify":1676534644459,"author":{"id":"4098524475474940","authorId":"4098524475474940","name":"AnthonyFoo","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/35478c05f1aca1611dc6bce1780bc4aa","crmLevel":3,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4098524475474940","authorIdStr":"4098524475474940"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Can keep for long term ","listText":"Can keep for long term ","text":"Can keep for long term","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":4,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9083143636","repostId":"1142029213","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1142029213","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1650032497,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1142029213?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2022-04-15 22:21","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Apple Stock: Is It Cheap? A Valuation Analysis

Apple’s valuations vs. peer group

Perhaps the most commonly used valuation multiple is the price-to-earnings ratio, or P/E. It measures the price that investors pay for a stock relative to the company’s earnings per share — either historical (known as trailing P/E) or projected (forward P/E).

According to Stock Rover, Apple stock currently trades at a forward P/E of 25.6 times. This is a rich valuation multiple that sits closer to the higher end of Apple’s historical P/E range, although not at the very peak.

But should 25.6x be considered a high number in today’s market environment? Let’s compare the figure to the forward P/E of Apple’s key competitors and tech giant peers. See chart below.

Figure 2: Apple's forward P/E vs. peer group.

Notice that, compared to the likes of Amazon, Microsoft and Nvidia, Apple stock looks cheap. But compared to the internet giants Alphabet and Meta Platforms, Apple is richly valued. For example, why might the earnings ratio be inflated or discounted?

One of the reasons could be growth expectations. The more robust a company’s long-term earnings growth potential is, the richer its P/E tends or deserves to be.

So, in order to do a better “apples-to-apples” comparison (pun definitely intended) between the Cupertino company and its peer, I suggest the following approach to normalize for growth expectations: divide each stock’s P/E by the estimate for five-year earnings increase.

The resulting metric is what we call the PEG ratio, which stands for P/E-to-growth. The numerator in this equation adjusts for net cash on hand, and rewards companies that have better liquidity.

Using this valuation metric (see chart below), notice how NVIDIA sticks out as an absurdly pricey stock. The S&P 500 index confirmed in June it was in a bear market, and on Monday it ended the session below its mid-June closing low, extending this year's overall selloff. With the Fed signaling last Wednesday that high interest rates could last through 2023, the S&P 500 has relinquished the last of its gains made in a summer rally.\"Investors are just throwing in the towel,\" said Jake Dollarhide, Chief Executive Officer of Longbow Asset Management in Tulsa, Oklahoma. \"It's the uncertainty about the high-water mark for the Fed funds rate. Is it 4.6%, is it 5%?
