The uptrend is under pressure. Treasury yields jumped to their highest levels in months, with the 10-year rate nearly up to 4%.

Economic Data Too Hot

The last batch of economic reports for January packed a wallop — and it wasn't just the inflation data. Personal spending surged 1.8%. Adjusted for inflation, spending rose the most since March 2021. Even new home sales took off, unexpectedly jumping 7% to a 670,000 annual rate. Yet those bursts of activity were fueled by temporary factors: unusually warm weather, an 8.7% Social Security cost-of-living boost and moderating mortgage rates that have already reversed higher.

But the sharpest monthly price increases since last June could leave a lasting imprint on Fed policy. The PCE price index and core PCE, stripping out food and energy, both rose 0.6% on the month. Even worse, that came on top of upward revisions to December price increases. As a result, the steadily declining annual inflation rates unexpectedly reversed higher. The PCE inflation rate ticked up to 5.4%, while core PCE inflation edged up to 4.7%.

The hot inflation data also extended to core nonhousing services, with a monthly 0.6% rise, the fastest since November 2021. This is the category of spending that Fed chair Jerome Powell sees as most important to the inflation outlook.

After the latest batch of data, markets are now pricing in roughly one-third odds that the Fed will hike its key rate by a half-point on March 22.

Nvidia Touts AI Business

The graphics-chip maker beat Wall Street's estimates for its fiscal fourth quarter and guided higher for the current period. ButNvidia(NVDA) revenue and earnings fell 21% and 33%, respectively, in the quarter ended Jan. 29, as gaming chip sales remained weak. But investors focused on CEO Jensen Huang's comments that artificial intelligence technology is at an inflection point. Netflix also promoted new cloud-based AI services. NVDA stock rocketed after the report.

Walmart, Home Depot Guide Low

The big-box Dow Jones retailers both offered cautious outlooks for the year ahead. Walmart(WMT) easily beat Q4 EPS views with revenue also topping. Home Depot(HD) topped profit targets but revenue fell just short. The home improvement giant said it'll spend an extra $1 billion to boost pay for front-line workers. WMT stock rose Tuesday on earnings, but fell for the week. Home Depot fell sharply, weighing on Lowe's(LOW) and several other housing-related retailers. However, Floor & Decor(FND) reported a 45% EPS gain, beating views, while the flooring retailer's 15% revenue gain just missed. FND jumped Friday.

Toll Brothers Tops, Remains Upbeat

The luxury homebuilder reported fiscal Q1 EPS climbed 37% while revenue fell less than 1% to $1.78 billion. Toll Brothers(TOL) delivered 1,826 units, near the high end of its guidance. It expects to deliver 2,050-2,150 units in Q2 with an average home price of $980,000-$1,000,000. For the full year, Toll predicts 8,000-9,000 units delivered with selling prices of $965,000-$985,000. Meanwhile, overall new- and existing-home sales have trended sharply lower amid higher mortgage rates.

Tesla China Registrations Fall Again

Tesla(TSLA) insurance registrations in China fell to 5,913 in the week ended Feb. 19, vs. 6,963 in the prior week and 8,643 before that. That could reflect waning demand after an initial burst on price cuts. However, exports could be limiting Tesla EVs for local delivery. The next few weeks should clarify. Meanwhile,BYD(BYDDF) reported 37,026 registrations, up 18%.Li Auto(LI),Nio(NIO) andXPeng(XPEV) showed modest week-to-week gains.

Alibaba Beats, But Price War Hits Sector

Alibaba(BABA) beat estimates on the top and bottom lines, as the China e-commerce giant fought through softer demand and supply chain woes. Search-and-AI giant Baidu(BIDU) also beat earnings and revenue estimates and announced a $5 billion buyback plan.NetEase(NTES) fell short on earnings and matched revenue estimates. The worst of the tech crackdowns may be over, but burgeoning price wars may hurt profits. JD.com(JD) said it will spend $1.5 billion to create a budget-conscious e-commerce website that will challenge Pinduoduo, the core business of PDD Holdings(PDD).

BHP, Rio Profits Fall With Metals Prices

BHP(BHP) reported a 32% drop in first-half net profit due to weaker prices for iron ore, copper and other base metals. Rio Tinto reported weaker-than-expected Q4 profit for similar reasons, though revenue topped. Base metal miner stocks rallied strongly in late 2022 and in January as China reopening hopes boosted iron and copper prices from recent lows, but copper has slumped again. Miners' shares have paused in recent weeks. BHP and Rio stock fell in the latest week.

Energy Earnings Mixed

Shale producers Diamondback Energy(FANG),Northern Oil & Gas(NOG),EOG Resources(EOG) andCallon Petroleum(CPE) reported mixed Q4 results whileMatador Resources(MTDR) beat projections and gave bullish 2023 production guidance. Offshore contract drillerTransocean(RIG) reported a wider-than-expected loss while offshore services firmHelix Energy(HLX) beat analyst Q4 predictions, ending a seven-quarter string of quarterly losses.

Industrial Equipment Firms Split

Nordson(NDSN) reported Q1 EPS fell 6%, slightly more than expected, while sales were just flat. NDSN stock plunged.Ingersoll Rand(IR) reported a surprise 6% EPS gain with revenue up 14% to $1.62 billion. IR stock is around a buy point.

News In Brief

Palo Alto Networks(PANW) reported fiscal Q2 EPS rose 81% year over year, easily beating. Including acquisitions, revenue rose 26% to $1.7 billion, slightly topping. Annual recurring revenue from next-generation cloud products surged 63% to $2.33 billion, topping estimates of $2.25 billion. Palo Alto guided higher on Q3 EPS but slightly lower on revenue.

TJX Cos.(TJX), a leading off-price retailer, gave a soft earnings outlook for the new fiscal year, after posting in-line earnings and a slight revenue beat for the holiday fourth quarter. TJX became the latest retailer to signal a consumer slowdown amid inflation. Q4 EPS rose 14% while revenue grew 5%. The operator of T.J. Net profit grew 26% to 16.8 billion euros ($17.9 billion). Net revenues rose 18% to 179.6 billion euros. Global EV sales jumped 41% for the year. Shares of Stellantis, parent of Chrysler, Fiat, Peugeot and more, jumped.

Moderna(MRNA) tumbled Thursday after a 68% EPS decline came in well short of Q4 views. Sales fell 29.5% to $5.08 billion, but came in ahead of projections. Moderna also issued a light outlook for 2023. The mRNA vaccine maker gained a breakthrough designation for its Merck-partnered cancer vaccine.

Wingstop(WING) easily beat Q4 expectations, with EPS soaring 155% and revenue jumping 46% to $104.9 million, marking three quarters of accelerating growth for both. The electrical construction and mechanical services firm gapped up out of a base.

Intuit(INTU) crushed fiscal second-quarter views, thanks to strong sales of financial software for small businesses. EPS jumped 42% as revenue grew 14% to $3.04 billion. The Manheim used car data showed that used car prices rose by 4.1% through the first half of February. That is the most significantincrease in used cars since October 2021.

Bloomberg

The index rose to 234.0, the highest value since July 2022, when it stood at 239.6. It provides even further evidence that inflation is embedded within this economy and bubbling up again. The used car index price is up 7.5% since the November lower. This type of data will probably feed into the inflation expectations continuing to rise.

Inflation swaps have risen dramatically since the CPI report last week. The February CPI inflation now sees inflation at 6.01%, which is up from 5.78% on January 13, the day before the CPI report. Meanwhile, the March CPI inflation swap is trading at 4.98%, up from 4.85% the day before the CPI report. These inflation swaps tell us that the market expects inflation to be persistently higher than previously expected and that expectations for that fast roll-off in data may be far slower than expected.

Bloomberg

Even worse, the pipe dream that inflation would hit 2% by June is long gone. Inflation swaps for June are now 2.8%, up 80 bps from the January 9 low of 2.03%.

Bloomberg

The PCE report is expected to come on Friday as well, showing that inflation in January will also be hot. PCE month-over-month in January is forecast to have increased by 0.5% month-over-month from 0.1% and be up by 5% year-over-year, in line with the December reading. Meanwhile, core PCE is expected to rise by 0.4% month-over-month versus an increase of 0.3% in December and 4.3% year-over-year, down from 4.4% in December. That would undoubtedly be a big blow again to the hope that inflation would ride off into the sunset.

But more importantly, this presents a real problem to the bullish narrative because the higher inflation stays, the higher rates will have to go. Historically, the year-over-year PCE is still more than 1.15% above the 30-year Treasury rate. That has only happened two other times in recent history, in the fall of 1979 and the summer of 1980, and it was brief, and the PCE year-over-year was just 0.3% above the 30-year rate. The Manheim used car data showed that used car prices rose by 4.1% through the first half of February. That is the most significantincrease in used cars since October 2021.BloombergThe index rose to 234.0, the highest value since July 2022, when it stood at 239.6. It provides even further evidence that inflation is embedded within this economy and bubbling up again. The used car index price is up 7.5% since the November lower. This type of data will probably feed into the inflation expectations continuing to rise.Inflation swaps have risen dramatically since the CPI report last week. The February CPI inflation now sees inflation at 6.01%, which is up from 5.78% on January 13, the day before the CPI report. Meanwhile, the March CPI inflation swap is trading at 4.98%, up from 4.85% the day before the CPI report. These inflation swaps tell us that the market expects inflation to be persistently higher than previously expected and that expectations for that fast roll-off in data may be far slower than expected.BloombergEven worse, the pipe dream that inflation would hit 2% by June is long gone. Inflation swaps for June are now 2.8%, up 80 bps from the January 9 low of 2.03%.BloombergThe PCE report is expected to come on Friday as well, showing that inflation in January will also be hot. The inflation rate hasn't exceeded the 30-year Treasury in modern history.BloombergHowever, long-term rates have been slow to rise because the market has believed that inflation would be fast to come down. But the longer inflation stays high, and the slower it takes to fall, the more likely it becomes that long-term rates will rise above the inflation. On average, the 30-year rate has traded 3.12% above the PCE inflation rate, implying an 8.12% 30-year rate, assuming PCE comes in at 5% this week. So either inflation needs to start falling fast, or long-term rates will have to head much higher soon.BloombergThis would have grave implications for the equity market that ran in front of the disinflation narrative. Let me make an even more brazen market call, predicting that Disney stock will more than double in three years. The global economy will get worse before it gets better, and that's going to be hit to the gut of Disney as a consumer-facing titan. Advertisers will pare back their marketing budgets for the company's TV and streaming businesses. The iconic theme parks segment that set new records in fiscal 2022 will be challenged. Box office returns will continue the systemic decline that's been happening for two decades.

Thankfully, the horizon is brighter than the pothole-filled road that lies immediately ahead. Let's start with Disney's media and entertainment distribution segment. Revenue rose 8% in fiscal 2022, as a 20% surge in its premium streaming business was enough to lift flat results at its legacy linear networks.

Disney+ -- along with Hulu and ESPN+ -- now account for nearly a quarter of the company's total revenue. The sticking point here is that the direct-to-consumer streaming business served up an operating deficit of more than $4 billion in the last fiscal year. The red ink at Disney+ is the main reason why Iger is here and dismissed CEO Bob Chapek is not. When the platform launched three years ago, the goal was for Disney+ to become profitable by the end of fiscal 2024. With losses widening, it didn't seem likely. As Iger's primary objective, you have to like his chances of getting the balance right on the streaming end. It may not happen in two years, but three years from now we could be there. A recent price hike and the addition of an ad-supported tier should help Disney+ in the quest to add to the media giant's bottom line instead of subtract from it by early 2026.

Ads will naturally come back to the market once consumers are spending again, and Disney's unmatched content catalog and franchises will continue to make it a desirable market for advertisers to reach. DespiteAvatar: The Way of Water becoming the first film since 2019 to top $2 billion in worldwide ticket sales, theatrical distribution will continue to be a challenge for Disney and its peers. The good news is that the company already has strong and established streaming platforms that will help offset any weakness at the local multiplex.

Turning to Disney's theme parks business, the segment saved it over the past year as "revenge travel" became a thing. Folks paid a premium to get back to the leading theme park operator after scrapping vacation plans in 2020 and at least globally in 2021. This segment will see turnstile clicks slow this year if not next year if there isn't a soft landing to the mounting economic pressures, but Disney's gated attractions always bounce back.

The interesting year for the theme parks will be 2025, when its largest rival in Florida opens Epic Universe at Universal Orlando. Disney will need a response if it doesn't want to squander market share at its largest resort. Iger hasn't said a lot about the future of Disney's theme parks business, but if he really wants to cement his legacy -- and be able to stay away for good this time -- it will have to be about more than just turning Disney+ around. It's too late for Disney to have a new park in Florida to compete against Epic Universe when it opens, but the plans will likely be in place by then to keep patrons close and shareholders even closer.

Disney continues to be the class act of media stocks. Trailing revenue already exceeds its pre-pandemic peak of fiscal 2019. Analysts see adjusted earnings surpassing the all-time high of $7.08 a share it posted in fiscal 2018 by fiscal 2026. Getting the stock back above $200 in three years seems more than reasonable if Iger is largely successful this time.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":594,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9952675559,"gmtCreate":1674713222371,"gmtModify":1676538954770,"author":{"id":"4099029840674880","authorId":"4099029840674880","name":"SuccesInvst","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/ff090ccd1da1d069698d50b9c5ce27b2","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4099029840674880","authorIdStr":"4099029840674880"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"🤔","listText":"🤔","text":"🤔","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":6,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9952675559","repostId":"2306480413","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2306480413","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Reuters.com brings you the latest news from around the world, covering breaking news in markets, business, politics, entertainment and technology","home_visible":1,"media_name":"Reuters","id":"1036604489","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/443ce19704621c837795676028cec868"},"pubTimestamp":1674688076,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2306480413?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2023-01-26 07:07","market":"us","language":"en","title":"S&P 500 Closes Slightly Red As Weak Corporate Guidance Fuels Recession Fears","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2306480413","media":"Reuters","summary":"* AT&T gains on subscriber adds* General Dynamics slides after weak outlook* Tesla results expected ","content":"

* AT&T gains on subscriber adds

* General Dynamics slides after weak outlook

* Tesla results expected after the bell

* Indexes: Dow up 0.03%, S&P 500 off 0.02%, Nasdaq down 0.18%

NEW YORK, Jan 25 (Reuters) - The S&P 500 ended nominally lower on Wednesday as a string of corporate earnings ran the gamut from downbeat to dismal, reviving worries over the economic impact of the U.S. Federal Reserve's restrictive policy.

All three major U.S. stock indexes pared their losses throughout the afternoon to close well off session lows, with the blue-chip Dow eking out a small gain in the final minutes.

The tech-laden Nasdaq was weighed down after Microsoft Corp, the first major technology firm to post quarterly results, offereddour guidanceand raised red flags with respect to its megacap peers which have yet to report.

"We’ve had up and down days, that indicates an ongoing tug-of-war," said Chuck Carlson, chief executive officer at Horizon Investment Services in Hammond, Indiana. the effect of China easing up on its zero-Covid policy. This change in stance has rekindled hope in investors of Chinese stocks after the pandemic and lockdowns caused many shares to fall.

The latest reports claim that China is looking at a full reopening sometime next year. That would be a welcome change for investors, as it would allow businesses to resume normal operations. Currently, travel is restricted and some lockdowns have been trouble for supply lines.

XPEV Stock Isn’t Out Of The Woods Yet

While XPEV stock has been climbing alongside other Chinese stock lately, it’s not totally in the clear. This change in stance has rekindled hope in investors of Chinese stocks after the pandemic and lockdowns caused many shares to fall. The latest reports claim that China is looking at a full reopening sometime next year. That would be a welcome change for investors, as it would allow businesses to resume normal operations. Currently, travel is restricted and some lockdowns have been trouble for supply lines.XPEV Stock Isn’t Out Of The Woods YetWhile XPEV stock has been climbing alongside other Chinese stock lately, it’s not totally in the clear. Its top executive for that market has been called in to help out at its newest plant, in Texas, which isn’t ramping up as planned. And Tesla’s stock, which has lost more than $500 billion in market value this year, is under renewed pressure as Musk’s advisers weigh using the billionaire’s shares as collateral for new loans to replace Twitter debt.

The revelations just from the past few days have raised concerns with shareholders already worried about Musk’s priorities since he took the helm of yet another company.

“Tesla board is missing in action,” Leo KoGuan, one of Tesla’s largest individual shareholders, tweeted Wednesday as he suggested a stock buyback. He and another outspoken Tesla investor, Ross Gerber, are calling for the board to add a director who would represent retail shareholders.

Musk himself has said he has “too much work” on his plate, and is handling it by sometimes sleeping in the office. Whereas in the past he slumbered at Tesla facilities, lately he’s hibernated at Twitter’s San Francisco headquarters.

”I continue to oversee both Tesla & SpaceX, but the teams there are so good that often little is needed from me,” Musk tweeted Thursday. “Tesla Team has done incredibly well, despite extremely difficult times,” he said earlier in the day, citing the European energy crisis, real estate downturn in China, and US interest rates as macroeconomic challenges.

The volatile recent stretch muddies the close of a year in which Tesla is still expected to achieve record sales and retain its crown as the world’s largest EV maker. It hasn’t been immune, however, from the slowdown in China’s car market and recessionary conditions in Europe. In October, Chief Financial Officer Zachary Kirkhorn said the company expects to come up just short of the 50% growth in vehicle deliveries that the company has repeatedly said it’s expecting over several years.

Tesla’s plant in Austin, Texas, is scaling slower than expected, with a new form of lithium-ion battery cells not yet ready for volume production. Against that backdrop, the company tapped Tom Zhu, a key executive in China who oversaw construction of the Shanghai factory, to oversee operations in Austin, Bloomberg reported Wednesday.

In Shanghai, Tesla is shortening production shifts and delaying start dates for some newly hired employees, Bloomberg reported Thursday, the latest signs that demand for Tesla EVs in China isn’t meeting expectations. That came after Bloomberg reported earlier this week that Tesla planned to cut production on the Model Y and Model 3 production lines in Shanghai by about 20%.

Tesla will have a lot on its plate in 2023. The company recently started delivering its long-awaited Semi truck several years late and plans to finally start producing its first pickup, the Cybertruck.

The buyback some investors have been asking for may also be in the cards. Musk said during the company’s last earnings call that the board generally thought a buyback made sense, and that something on the order of $5 billion to $10 billion was possible. The revelations just from the past few days have raised concerns with shareholders already worried about Musk’s priorities since he took the helm of yet another company.“Tesla board is missing in action,” Leo KoGuan, one of Tesla’s largest individual shareholders, tweeted Wednesday as he suggested a stock buyback. He and another outspoken Tesla investor, Ross Gerber, are calling for the board to add a director who would represent retail shareholders.Musk himself has said he has “too much work” on his plate, and is handling it by sometimes sleeping in the office. Whereas in the past he slumbered at Tesla facilities, lately he’s hibernated at Twitter’s San Francisco headquarters.”I continue to oversee both Tesla & SpaceX, but the teams there are so good that often little is needed from me,” Musk tweeted Thursday. In October, Chief Financial Officer Zachary Kirkhorn said the company expects to come up just short of the 50% growth in vehicle deliveries that the company has repeatedly said it’s expecting over several years.Tesla’s plant in Austin, Texas, is scaling slower than expected, with a new form of lithium-ion battery cells not yet ready for volume production. That came after Bloomberg reported earlier this week that Tesla planned to cut production on the Model Y and Model 3 production lines in Shanghai by about 20%.Tesla will have a lot on its plate in 2023. Last month, he tweeted that the decision will be up to Tesla’s directors.Musk and Tesla didn’t respond to requests Thursday for comment. A representative for the company said earlier that Bloomberg’s report of plans to cut output in Shanghai was “untrue,” without elaborating.Tesla shares slipped less than 1% at the close in New York, trading lower for a fourth consecutive day. At just 0.6 times its earnings growth rate, the semiconductor stock represents a better opportunity than any cryptocurrency.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":329,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9929089645,"gmtCreate":1670562033388,"gmtModify":1676538394623,"author":{"id":"4099029840674880","authorId":"4099029840674880","name":"SuccesInvst","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/ff090ccd1da1d069698d50b9c5ce27b2","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4099029840674880","authorIdStr":"4099029840674880"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Advanced Micro Devices(AMD)$ <v-v data-views=\"0\"></v-v>","listText":"$Advanced Micro Devices(AMD)$ <v-v data-views=\"0\"></v-v>","text":"$Advanced Micro Devices(AMD)$","images":[{"img":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/96eb718fe8e4fc6fc9b2715f399a8259","width":"750","height":"1426"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9929089645","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":220,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9920661765,"gmtCreate":1670480246257,"gmtModify":1676538377545,"author":{"id":"4099029840674880","authorId":"4099029840674880","name":"SuccesInvst","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/ff090ccd1da1d069698d50b9c5ce27b2","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4099029840674880","authorIdStr":"4099029840674880"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Walt Disney(DIS)$ <v-v data-views=\"0\"></v-v>","listText":"$Walt Disney(DIS)$ <v-v data-views=\"0\"></v-v>","text":"$Walt Disney(DIS)$","images":[{"img":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/4f818e6f0f346bdfe0498317110cf454","width":"750","height":"1305"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9920661765","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":474,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9920661578,"gmtCreate":1670480186094,"gmtModify":1676538377537,"author":{"id":"4099029840674880","authorId":"4099029840674880","name":"SuccesInvst","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/ff090ccd1da1d069698d50b9c5ce27b2","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4099029840674880","authorIdStr":"4099029840674880"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"🤔","listText":"🤔","text":"🤔","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9920661578","repostId":"2289457736","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2289457736","pubTimestamp":1670479989,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2289457736?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2022-12-08 14:13","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Carvana, the Amazon of Used Cars, Is Collapsing","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2289457736","media":"TheStreet","summary":"Carvana, the Amazon of used cars, on Wednesday is having one of its worst days on Wall Street.Carvan","content":"

Carvana, the Amazon of used cars, on Wednesday is having one of its worst days on Wall Street.

Carvana shares fell more than 42.9% to $3.83 as doubts about the company's ability to meet its payment deadlines piled up.

The figures are terrible: The stock has lost 45% since the beginning of December.
