That is more than the total number of SPAC liquidations in the market’s history, according to data provider SPAC Research. SPAC creators have lost more than $600 million on liquidations this month and more than $1.1 billion this year, the data show.</p><p>Many more SPACs have said they would wind down in the coming weeks. The trend is hurtingprolific backerssuch as venture capitalistChamath Palihapitiyaand private-equity billionaireAlec Gores, wealthy former business executives likeGary Cohnand big Wall Street firms such asKKR&amp; Co. andTPGInc.</p><p>For many of the big SPAC creators, the losses have barely dented the fortunes they made during the mania. Mr. Palihapitiya, who saidhe would shutter two SPACsin September, told The Wall Street Journal that his investment firm made about $750 million across several deals. The firm, Social Capital Holdings Inc., took public companies like space-tourism firmVirgin Galactic HoldingsInc. and personal-finance appSoFi TechnologiesInc.</p><p>Those SPACs that came late to the game are often struggling to find deals. Falling stock prices and rising interest rates haveessentially frozen the market for new public listings, making it difficult for executives to meet their two-year deadline to find a deal. Many of those deadlines are coming up in the first half of next year.</p><p>A 1%federal tax on share repurchasesthat is part of new climate, health and spending legislation has accelerated liquidations. Winding down a SPAC and returning cash to the investors could be considered a repurchase of the company’s existing shares, which would face the buyback tax beginning next year. Some analysts project SPAC liquidation losses will top $2 billion in the coming months.</p><p>“Something people thought was going to be a fantastic vehicle for creating wealth is looking increasingly like a poisoned chalice,” saidJohn Chachas, co-managing principal at Methuselah Advisors, a boutique investment bank that has advised companies fielding an increasing number of calls from SPACs desperate to find deals.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/5f7d08be8cbf3bbff7754fae8720b7f3\" tg-width=\"753\" tg-height=\"528\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/></p><p>Also called a blank-check company, a SPAC is ashell firmthat raises money from investors and lists publicly with the sole purpose of merging with a private company to take it public. After regulators review the deal and it is completed, the company going public replaces the SPAC in the stock market.</p><p>Such mergers burst onto the scene as popular alternatives to traditional initial public offerings in 2020 and 2021. The boom turned into a bust during this year’s market reversal.</p><p>An exchange-traded fund tracking companies that went public this way is down more than 70% this year, dragged down by losses in startups such as sports-betting firmDraftKingsInc. and electric car maker Lucid Group Inc. Companies that went public via SPACs haveperformed worsethan other newly public companies this year.</p><p>One characteristic of SPACs is that investors can get their cash back if they don’t want to participate in a deal. When the market was hot, investors often held shares in the newly public startups, expecting big returns or selling immediately if shares had already gone up. Now they arepulling out before the deals close, dramatically reducing the amount of cash companies can raise.</p><p>SPACs are now paying less for companies than they did during the sector’s peak. The average valuation of startups announcing SPAC mergers has fallen to about $400 million this quarter from more than $2 billion for most of last year, Dealogic data show. Roughly 300 companies have gone public through SPACs in the last two years.</p><p>There are still nearly 400 SPACs together holding about $100 billion that have yet to find deals, according to SPAC Research. If roughly 200 of the SPACs liquidated, the losses for creators would be well above $2 billion, said New York University Law School professorMichael Ohlrogge, whostudies SPACs. SPAC creators have lost about $9 million on average through liquidations this year, money they paid to banks and law firms to set up the shell companies.</p><p>There are another roughly 150 SPACs holding about $25 billion that have reached merger agreements but haven’t closed them, including a blank-check firm that is trying to take publicDonald Trump’s social-media company, according to SPAC Research. Investors in these companies have enjoyed the fruits of their dominance, with gains that range from 333% and 2,080% -- even after the recent mauling by the bear market.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/7577100f5ae16c0e979046c0e7b77bff\" tg-width=\"720\" tg-height=\"533\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>Data by YCharts</span></p><p>Yet if each of these disruptors has one thing in common, it&#39;s that the unrivaled growth of the past decade <i>may</i> have peaked. The stock market is a forward-looking mechanism and investors are trying to identify the stocks that will lead the way for the <i>next</i> 10 years. With that in mind, let&#39;s consider the companies of my recently created GHOST acronym, which could lead the way in 2023 and beyond.</p><h2>Global-e Online</h2><p>Investors have been skittish about the decelerating growth that has plagued online retailers over the past year. It&#39;s more likely that digital sales are simply taking a breather before their next leg higher. The e-commerce market is expected to climb from $3.3 trillion today to $5.4 trillion by 2026, according to <b>Morgan Stanley</b>. Cross-border sales will help fuel that rise, aided by <b>Global-e Online</b>.</p><p>Cross-border retail is brimming with potential pitfalls including customs and duties, inter-country regulatory compliance, currency exchange, foreign languages, and local payment methods. Global-e handles all that and more, helping merchants break into the potentially lucrative international marketplace.</p><p>In fact, e-commerce powerhouse <b>Shopify</b> is so convinced of the company&#39;s future success that it owns a 10.2% stake in Global-e online worth more than $373 million, while also making it a strategic partner and exclusive provider of cross-border services for Shopify&#39;s 1.7 million merchants. That&#39;s a heady endorsement from the world&#39;s largest e-commerce platform and purveyor of software-as-a-service (SaaS) tools for digital retail.</p><p>Global-e&#39;s third-quarter results quell the notion that the best days of e-commerce have passed. In the third quarter, revenue grew 79% year over year, driven by gross merchandise volume (GMV) soaring 77% higher. The company continues to generate a net loss under generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), but generates positive operating cash flow, which shows its lack of profits is the result of noncash items including depreciation.</p><p>The results suggest Global-e Online has the inside track for the next generation of e-commerce.</p><h2><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/HUBS\">HubSpot</a></h2><p>No longer confined to its inbound marketing roots, <b>HubSpot</b> has expanded its expertise to nearly every facet of customer relationship management (CRM), taking a page from the <b>Salesforce</b> playbook. The company now offers a host of solutions that run the gamut of customer needs, including marketing, sales, service, operations, and a content management system (CMS).</p><p>In the third quarter, HubSpot&#39;s total revenue grew 38% year over year in constant currency, while its adjusted net income grew 24%. GAAP profits are still elusive, but the company is profitable on an adjusted basis <i>and</i> generating strong free cash flow, which suggests profits are merely a matter of time.</p><p>HubSpot also delivered robust customer growth, up 25% year over year. At the same time, average subscription revenue per customer grew 12% and net revenue retention was 109%. Both were fueled by customers&#39; continued adoption of multiple products.</p><p>It&#39;s also worth mentioning HubSpot&#39;s opportunity continues to grow. Management estimates its current total addressable market (TAM) of $45 billion will climb to $72 billion by 2027. When viewed in the context of its 2021 revenue of $1.3 billion, that helps illustrate the magnitude of the opportunity that remains.</p><p>Customer relationship management is a key driver of business success and HubSpot is a leading provider for the next generation of companies.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/e9d16d3f5ec57b8991412d2617392417\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"525\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>Image source: Getty Images.</span></p><h2>Okta</h2><p>One need only peruse the headlines to understand the importance of preventing unauthorized intrusions. <b>Okta</b> has taken the task head-on, upending the genre with cloud-based identity verification and access management solutions. Its platform acts as a frontline of defenses, ensuring employees, customers, and even contractors who access company systems have the necessary credentials. Furthermore, Okta&#39;s zero-trust model is quickly becoming the industry standard, enjoying broad adoption. This helps prevent its customers from making the front page as the latest victim of malicious intrusions.</p><p>For the fiscal 2023 first quarter (ended Oct. 31), revenue grew by 37% year over year, while its remaining performance obligation (RPO) -- which is made up of unbilled subscription revenue -- grew 21%. The current portion of RPO grew 34% year over year, suggesting its future growth will likely be remarkably consistent -- an important consideration in challenging times. Furthermore, management said it expects adjusted profits for its 2024 full fiscal year, which begins Feb. 1, 2023.</p><p>While Okta initially experienced challenges integrating Auth0, the acquisition appears to have turned the corner, significantly expanding the company&#39;s path for future growth.</p><p>Furthermore, Okta has been recognized by both <b>Forrester Research</b> and <b>Gartner </b>as a leader in the field of customer identity and access management.</p><p>The need to fortify business systems and prevent hacks, data breaches, and other unauthorized intrusions has never been greater. Okta has proven its worth as a leader in the field.</p><h2><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/SNOW\">Snowflake</a></h2><p>The digital transformation is ongoing, sending a tsunami of data, applications, and software to the cloud. Unfiltered data gathered in one place could provide leaders with a wealth of information and insight, but the challenge is not only gathering disparate systems and data in one place, but also having the technology to extract meaningful intelligence.</p><p><b>Snowflake</b> has the solution. Sure, the company provides the ability to store small or large amounts of data on its cloud-based system. But it also offers a multitude of services that helps companies transition and analyze the data, resulting in actionable information.</p><p>In its fiscal 2023 third quarter (ended Oct. 31), revenue grew an impressive 67% year over year, fueled by product revenue that also grew 67%. Perhaps more importantly, Snowflake&#39;s RPO -- a leading indicator -- climbed 66%, suggesting its robust growth has legs. Losses continue to pile up, but Snowflake generates strong free cash flow, which shows that it&#39;s just a matter of time before the company is solidly profitable.</p><p>Snowflake&#39;s customer metrics are equally compelling. Its total customer count grew 34%, but those spending $1 million or more in trailing 12-month revenue grew 94%, showing the value it provides to enterprise-level businesses. Furthermore, existing customers tend to spend more money over time, as evidenced by the company&#39;s net revenue retention rate of 165%.</p><p>This is just the start of the digital transformation and Snowflake&#39;s use-based pricing is attracting plenty of next-generation converts.</p><h2>The Trade Desk</h2><p>In tough economic times, one of the first line items in the income statement to take a hit is the advertising budget. As a result, the world&#39;s biggest digital advertisers are suffering. Alphabet&#39;s ad revenue grew just 6% year over year in the third quarter, while Meta Platforms saw revenue <i>decline</i> by 4%.</p><p>By comparison, <b>The Trade Desk</b> -- with its cutting-edge programmatic adtech platform -- prospered, with revenue that grew 31% year over year, while adjusted earnings per share surged 44%.</p><p>Why the difference? The Trade Desk&#39;s platform was designed to cater to the needs of advertisers and the most recent upgrade allows marketers to create ad campaigns that integrate their own first-party customer data -- which in turn helps them better reach their target market.</p><p>Furthermore, The Trade Desk has built a broad coalition of the world&#39;s biggest advertisers, which are adopting its Unified ID 2.0, the heir-apparent to replace cookies. The system doesn&#39;t use personally identifiable information, a clear win in this age of growing privacy concerns.</p><p>Another big attraction for advertisers is The Trade Desk&#39;s transparent pricing. The company shows not only the cost of the ad, but its own cut, something that&#39;s unheard of in the industry. No platform holds a candle to Facebook when it comes to social media; Apple's iPhone is unrivaled; Amazon revolutionized digital retail; Netflix has long been the face of streaming video; and Google's search was so ubiquitous, it became a verb. Investors in these companies have enjoyed the fruits of their dominance, with gains that range from 333% and 2,080% -- even after the recent mauling by the bear market.Data by YChartsYet if each of these disruptors has one thing in common, it's that the unrivaled growth of the past decade may have peaked. The stock market is a forward-looking mechanism and investors are trying to identify the stocks that will lead the way for the next 10 years. With that in mind, let's consider the companies of my recently created GHOST acronym, which could lead the way in 2023 and beyond.Global-e OnlineInvestors have been skittish about the decelerating growth that has plagued online retailers over the past year. It's more likely that digital sales are simply taking a breather before their next leg higher. The e-commerce market is expected to climb from $3.3 trillion today to $5.4 trillion by 2026, according to Morgan Stanley. Cross-border sales will help fuel that rise, aided by Global-e Online.Cross-border retail is brimming with potential pitfalls including customs and duties, inter-country regulatory compliance, currency exchange, foreign languages, and local payment methods. Global-e handles all that and more, helping merchants break into the potentially lucrative international marketplace.In fact, e-commerce powerhouse Shopify is so convinced of the company's future success that it owns a 10.2% stake in Global-e online worth more than $373 million, while also making it a strategic partner and exclusive provider of cross-border services for Shopify's 1.7 million merchants. That's a heady endorsement from the world's largest e-commerce platform and purveyor of software-as-a-service (SaaS) tools for digital retail.Global-e's third-quarter results quell the notion that the best days of e-commerce have passed. In the third quarter, revenue grew 79% year over year, driven by gross merchandise volume (GMV) soaring 77% higher. The company continues to generate a net loss under generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), but generates positive operating cash flow, which shows its lack of profits is the result of noncash items including depreciation.The results suggest Global-e Online has the inside track for the next generation of e-commerce.HubSpotNo longer confined to its inbound marketing roots, HubSpot has expanded its expertise to nearly every facet of customer relationship management (CRM), taking a page from the Salesforce playbook. The company now offers a host of solutions that run the gamut of customer needs, including marketing, sales, service, operations, and a content management system (CMS).In the third quarter, HubSpot's total revenue grew 38% year over year in constant currency, while its adjusted net income grew 24%. GAAP profits are still elusive, but the company is profitable on an adjusted basis and generating strong free cash flow, which suggests profits are merely a matter of time.HubSpot also delivered robust customer growth, up 25% year over year. At the same time, average subscription revenue per customer grew 12% and net revenue retention was 109%. Both were fueled by customers' continued adoption of multiple products.It's also worth mentioning HubSpot's opportunity continues to grow. Management estimates its current total addressable market (TAM) of $45 billion will climb to $72 billion by 2027. When viewed in the context of its 2021 revenue of $1.3 billion, that helps illustrate the magnitude of the opportunity that remains.Customer relationship management is a key driver of business success and HubSpot is a leading provider for the next generation of companies.Image source: Getty Images.OktaOne need only peruse the headlines to understand the importance of preventing unauthorized intrusions. Okta has taken the task head-on, upending the genre with cloud-based identity verification and access management solutions. Its platform acts as a frontline of defenses, ensuring employees, customers, and even contractors who access company systems have the necessary credentials. Furthermore, Okta's zero-trust model is quickly becoming the industry standard, enjoying broad adoption. This helps prevent its customers from making the front page as the latest victim of malicious intrusions.For the fiscal 2023 first quarter (ended Oct. 31), revenue grew by 37% year over year, while its remaining performance obligation (RPO) -- which is made up of unbilled subscription revenue -- grew 21%. The current portion of RPO grew 34% year over year, suggesting its future growth will likely be remarkably consistent -- an important consideration in challenging times. Furthermore, management said it expects adjusted profits for its 2024 full fiscal year, which begins Feb. 1, 2023.While Okta initially experienced challenges integrating Auth0, the acquisition appears to have turned the corner, significantly expanding the company's path for future growth.Furthermore, Okta has been recognized by both Forrester Research and Gartner as a leader in the field of customer identity and access management.The need to fortify business systems and prevent hacks, data breaches, and other unauthorized intrusions has never been greater. Okta has proven its worth as a leader in the field.SnowflakeThe digital transformation is ongoing, sending a tsunami of data, applications, and software to the cloud. Unfiltered data gathered in one place could provide leaders with a wealth of information and insight, but the challenge is not only gathering disparate systems and data in one place, but also having the technology to extract meaningful intelligence.Snowflake has the solution. Sure, the company provides the ability to store small or large amounts of data on its cloud-based system. But it also offers a multitude of services that helps companies transition and analyze the data, resulting in actionable information.In its fiscal 2023 third quarter (ended Oct. 31), revenue grew an impressive 67% year over year, fueled by product revenue that also grew 67%. Perhaps more importantly, Snowflake's RPO -- a leading indicator -- climbed 66%, suggesting its robust growth has legs. Losses continue to pile up, but Snowflake generates strong free cash flow, which shows that it's just a matter of time before the company is solidly profitable.Snowflake's customer metrics are equally compelling. Its total customer count grew 34%, but those spending $1 million or more in trailing 12-month revenue grew 94%, showing the value it provides to enterprise-level businesses. Furthermore, existing customers tend to spend more money over time, as evidenced by the company's net revenue retention rate of 165%.This is just the start of the digital transformation and Snowflake's use-based pricing is attracting plenty of next-generation converts.The Trade DeskIn tough economic times, one of the first line items in the income statement to take a hit is the advertising budget. As a result, the world's biggest digital advertisers are suffering. Alphabet's ad revenue grew just 6% year over year in the third quarter, while Meta Platforms saw revenue decline by 4%.By comparison, The Trade Desk -- with its cutting-edge programmatic adtech platform -- prospered, with revenue that grew 31% year over year, while adjusted earnings per share surged 44%.Why the difference? The Trade Desk's platform was designed to cater to the needs of advertisers and the most recent upgrade allows marketers to create ad campaigns that integrate their own first-party customer data -- which in turn helps them better reach their target market.Furthermore, The Trade Desk has built a broad coalition of the world's biggest advertisers, which are adopting its Unified ID 2.0, the heir-apparent to replace cookies. The system doesn't use personally identifiable information, a clear win in this age of growing privacy concerns.Another big attraction for advertisers is The Trade Desk's transparent pricing. The company shows not only the cost of the ad, but its own cut, something that's unheard of in the industry. But these 13F filings fail to tell the complete story.</p><p>In 1998, Berkshire Hathaway acquired reinsurance company General Re for $22 billion. However, General Re also owned a specialty investment company, New England Asset Management (NEAM). When Berkshire Hathaway bought General Re, it became the owner of NEAM -- and thus was born Warren Buffett&#39;s &#34;secret portfolio.&#34;</p><p>Today, New England Asset Management has $5.9 billion in assets under management and has stakes in 184 separate securities. We know this because it&#39;s required to file a quarterly 13F just like its parent, Berkshire Hathaway. Among these 184 positions in Warren Buffett&#39;s secret portfolio, there are five phenomenal stocks that stand out as screaming buys in 2023.</p><h2>Johnson &amp; Johnson</h2><p>Considering that interest rates are soaring and the likelihood of a U.S. recession in 2023 is growing, time-tested, defensive companies with a long history of competitive advantages are smart buys for the new year. That&#39;s what makes healthcare stock <b>Johnson &amp; Johnson</b> (JNJ -1.26%) a screaming buy in 2023.</p><p>The great thing about healthcare stocks is that demand for prescription drugs, medical devices, and healthcare services remains consistent no matter how well or poorly the U.S. economy fares. This operating consistency is what helped J&amp;J deliver 35 consecutive years of adjusted operational earnings growth leading up to the COVID-19 pandemic.</p><p>Another reason for Johnson &amp; Johnson&#39;s success is its well-diversified operating model. On one hand, pharmaceuticals provide the juicy margins that fuel the company&#39;s growth. On the other hand, brand-name drugs have a finite period of sales exclusivity. That&#39;s where the company&#39;s leading medical device segment comes into play. As the population ages, demand and pricing power associated with medical devices should surge.</p><p>If you need one more reason to trust in Johnson &amp; Johnson, consider that it&#39;s one of just two publicly traded companies with the highly coveted AAA credit rating from Standard &amp; Poor&#39;s, a division of <b>S&amp;P Global</b>.</p><h2>Visa</h2><p>Payment processor <b>Visa</b> (V -2.54%) is a second stellar stock in Warren Buffett&#39;s secret portfolio that&#39;s a surefire buy in 2023.</p><p>Even if a recession were to materialize in the new year and hurt cyclical stocks like Visa, it&#39;s important to understand that Visa has time on its side. Historically, recessions don&#39;t last very long. By comparison, periods of economic expansion are measured in years. Buying and patiently holding Visa allows investors to take advantage of the natural expansion of U.S. and global spending over time.</p><p>It also doesn&#39;t hurt that Visa strictly sticks to payment processing and has avoided dipping its toes into the lending pool. Although it could easily generate interest income and added fees as a lender, doing so would expose it to loan losses during inevitable recessions. Not having to set aside capital to cover potential losses is what allows Visa to bounce back from economic downturns faster than its peers.</p><p>Don&#39;t overlook Visa&#39;s international opportunity, either. Since most global transactions are still being conducted in cash, there&#39;s ample opportunity to expand its payment structure into emerging markets for years (or likely decades) to come.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/fa1aca6003962c19490e94b36badd6d8\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"439\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/></p><p>Image source: Walt Disney.</p><h2>Walt Disney</h2><p>The third phenomenal stock in Warren Buffett&#39;s secret portfolio that makes for a smart buy in 2023 is media behemoth <b>Walt Disney</b> (DIS -3.89%). Though the company has been clobbered by COVID-19 pandemic-related issues and large operating losses tied to its streaming operations, the sustainable competitive edges Disney brings to the table can&#39;t be ignored.</p><p>What&#39;s really impressive about Walt Disney is the way it&#39;s able to connect with consumers of all ages. Few consumer-oriented businesses can engage with users as easily as Disney, which is what affords the company superior pricing power. Since 1955, the price of admission to Disneyland in Southern California has soared more than 10,000%, or 10 times the prevailing rate of inflation during the same period.</p><p>But it&#39;s the company&#39;s streaming operations that are getting most of the attention of late. In less than three years following its launch, Disney+ has amassed 164.2 million subscribers, which demonstrates how much of a lure Disney&#39;s characters and stories are to viewers. As cord-cutting continues, the company is perfectly positioned to secure additional subs and make a push to its first quarter of profitability in fiscal 2024.</p><p>And don&#39;t forget about Bob Iger, who reclaimed the CEO job last month. Iger oversaw a number of highly profitable acquisitions for the &#34;House of Mouse&#34; and spearheaded Disney&#39;s growth for decades. Expect more of the same as long as he has the reins.</p><h2>Bank of America</h2><p>Money-center giant <b>Bank of America</b> (BAC -1.58%) is the fourth amazing company in Warren Buffett&#39;s secret portfolio that&#39;s begging to be bought in 2023. Even with many of the same headwinds as Visa, three clearly defined catalysts make it a no-brainer buy.</p><p>To begin with, BofA has been benefiting from the Federal Reserve&#39;s aggressive shift in monetary policy. Bank stocks with outstanding variable-rate loans generate more in net interest income when interest rates rise. Bank of America tallied $13.9 billion in net interest income in the September-ended quarter, which was $2.7 billion higher than the prior-year period.  With the central bank not done increasing rates, BofA can expect more of this net interest to flow directly to its bottom line.</p><p>As I&#39;ve previously pointed out, Bank of America&#39;s digitization efforts are paying off. All told, 43 million people are now active digital customers, with 48% of total sales occurring online or via mobile app in the third quarter.  As people shift online for their banking needs, BofA has the opportunity to consolidate some of its physical branches in order to minimize noninterest expenses.</p><p>The third catalyst for Bank of America is its capital-return program. Bank stocks are often known for their juicy dividends and share buyback programs. During a good year, it&#39;s not out of the question for BofA to return in excess of $20 billion to its shareholders via dividends and share repurchases.</p><h2>PayPal Holdings</h2><p>The fifth phenomenal stock in Warren Buffett&#39;s secret portfolio that&#39;s a screaming buy in 2023 is fintech stock <b>PayPal Holdings</b> (PYPL -3.94%).</p><p>Despite inflation attacking the pocketbooks of low-earning workers, PayPal&#39;s digital payment platforms have demonstrated incredible resilience. Excluding currency changes, total payment volume across all of its platforms has climbed by a low double-digit percentage in 2022. The ability to sustain strong growth in such a challenging economic environment shows how powerful digital payments are as a long-term growth trend.</p><p>Equally important is PayPal&#39;s innovation. Last year, the company acquired Paidy, a buy now, pay later (BNPL) service in Japan. Then in June 2022, it introduced &#34;Pay Monthly,&#34; which further expanded its BNPL offerings in the United States.  Even though CEO Dan Schulman is aiming to cut $1.3 billion from his company&#39;s operating expenses in 2023, PayPal isn&#39;t skimping on innovation.</p><p>But as a shareholder of PayPal, the most reassuring data point is the increasing engagement of active accounts. Following a temporary engagement slowdown caused by the pandemic, the average active PayPal account completed 50.1 transactions over the trailing-12-month (TTM) period, ended Sept. 30, 2022. That&#39;s up from just 40.1 over the TTM at the end of 2020. (NYSE:PLTR) after their Q2 earnings call in August, which was reflected in my article, where I went from bullish to neutral inthe blink of an eye. I indicated that I was still bullish on the company&#39;s business prospects, but was disappointed with how Alex Karp&#39;s (Palantir CEO) commentary and how he conducted himself. After listening to the conference call and reading through the presentation, press release, and Alex Karp&#39;s letter to shareholders, I believed there were many things to like, but the original thesis he outlined was changing.</p><p>Since 2022 isn&#39;t playing out according to plan, I need to take a step back and recalculate my projections. Thankfully, the Q3 conference call on 7 November went much better than Q2&#39;s, but the results weren&#39;t overwhelmingly good. For all of the powerful slides of information embedded within the presentation, the bottom line is that Palantir&#39;s revenue growth won&#39;t hit Alek Karp&#39;s projections, and their margins are being impacted. This is causing the narrative to change. PLTR could still become a great long-term investment, but in the short term, I think shareholders will need to endure unwanted volatility.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/0bce4c6da47a33baf858c7b09566bba8\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"201\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>Seeking Alpha</span></p><h2>The ugly part of Q3 and how it is making my projections change</h2><p>In Q2 of 2021, PLTR reinforced their long-term outlook of 30%+ revenue growth for 2021 and the next 4 years, bringing them through 2025. PLTR had projected that its 2021 Adjusted FCF (free cash flow) would exceed $300 million in 2021, which would be a 100% increase from its previous outlook. I dislike adjusted numbers and would rather look at straight FCF, which is cash from operations minus CapEx or purchases of property and equipment. In 2021, PLTR ended the year generating $1.54 billion in revenue and $321.22 million of FCF for an FCF margin of 20.83%.</p><p>I built a model based on PLTR&#39;s commentary and their 2021 FCF margin. In my model, which is below, I had PLTR&#39;s revenue grow by 30% through 2025, then drop down to 25%, 22%, 19%, 17%, and 15% from years 2026 - 2030. Based on 2021&#39;s FCF margin of 20.83%, if these revenue growth numbers were in the ballpark, PLTR would have generated $2.53 billion of FCF in 2030 from $12.16 billion of revenue. Based on a 25x FCF multiple, PLTR would have a $63.30 billion market cap; at a 35x multiple, PLTR would have an $88.62 billion market; and at a 45x multiple, PLTR would have a $113.94 billion market cap. While Q2 made me switch my view because I was worried about how PLTR would be perceived by potential customers, the future looked interesting as there was a clear roadmap to a much larger market cap into 2030 than PLTR had today. All of this ended after the Q3 2022 conference call, and I now need to build a new model.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/83ae01fb83faa817f70110891f770c9b\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"66\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>Steven Fiorillo, Palantir, Seeking Alpha</span></p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/0d239d9dac695fda355bc570b6c2ea77\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"351\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>Palantir</span></p><p>I can no longer use the model I previously based my investment thesis around because PLTR&#39;s projections for revenue growth in 2022 have changed, and their margins have decreased significantly. PLTR is now guiding for $1.9 billion of revenue as its midpoint for the fiscal year of 2022. This is a YoY increase of $359.10 million, which is a 23.29% growth rate. The other issue is that PLTR&#39;s FCF margin has declined in the first 9-months of operations from 21.07% in 2021 to 7.86% in 2022. In the first 9 months of operations in 2021, PLTR generated $1.11 billion of revenue and $233.64 million of FCF for a 21.07% FCF margin. YTD over the first 9 months of 2022, PLR&#39;s revenue has increased by 25.99% YoY ($288.23 million) to $1.4 billion, but its cash from operations has declined by -$95.45 million (-39.70%), and their CapEx has increased by $28.33 million (417.60%), placing its FCF at $109.87 million. PLTR&#39;s FCF margin has declined by -13.20 percentage points to 7.86% from 21.07% YoY. As an investor, I need to readjust my investment thesis based on the new information and determine if 2022 is an anomaly or a new normal.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/e3d97f8eea6c89e38d0b039fe76b44b0\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"210\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>Palantir</span></p><p>I built 2 models to see where PLTR&#39;s numbers could go. My original cash flow projection called for $2.53 billion of FCF from $12.16 billion of revenue in 2030 based on 2021&#39;s FCF margin, and my revenue assumptions extrapolated past the 2025 projection from PLTR. In model 1, I chalked 2022 up to an anomaly. If I keep the revenue growth rate the same from 2023-2030 and the FCF margin the same as my previous figures, PLTR will generate $10.2 billion of revenue and $2.12 billion of FCF in 2030.</p><p>In model 2, I made the assumption that PLTR&#39;s revenue growth is downhill from here, and the entire thesis needs to change. 2022 is now projected to be a 23.29% YoY revenue growth rate for PLTR, so I projected accordingly. Instead of 30% growth rates for 2023 - 2025 ,I placed them at 20%, 20%, and 18%. Then I scaled down to 16%, 14%, 12%, 10%, and 8% for years 2026 - 2030. I completely speculated on the FCF margin and placed it at 10% for 2022, and looked at a 15% FCF margin for 2030. Based on these projections, PLTR would generate $5.68 billion of revenue in 2030 and produce $852.54 million of FCF.</p><p>I don&#39;t have a crystal ball, so I don&#39;t know which model is more accurate, but 2022 isn&#39;t what PLTR had hoped for, and it&#39;s certainly not what I had hoped for. PLTR is generating less cash from operations, and its margins are declining, especially its FCF margin. As an investor, I want to see as much cash and FCF generated from operations as possible, and if its revenue is increasing, I would hope that PLTR is generating additional cash from operations. Following the opening fireside talk between Alex Karp and Mike Allen (Co-Founder of Axios), presentations from the U.S. Space Systems Command and the National Cancer Institute were delivered, in addition to remarks from companies that included Jacobs, Morgan Stanley, Apache, and Tyson Foods.</p><p>Tyson Foods CTO Scott Spradley discussed the strategic outcomes that were achieved through transforming their business and generating $200 million in savings across 20 projects. John Rickerman from Jacobs highlighted that they are on track to save $300,000 annually at one of their sites, which was a 20% savings, and they have 300 sites where the same process can be replicated at. Colonel Jennifer Krolikowski stated that 15,000 people would not have been able to be evacuated from Afghanistan without utilizing PLTR&#39;s software.</p><p>PLTR is driving efficiencies and cost benefits for the largest companies and critical government agencies. PLTR is also one of three companies, which includes Amazon (AMZN) and MSFT, that have IL6 Provisional Authorization from the DOD. PLTR&#39;s testimonials are from the largest and most respected entities, and this certainly has an impact on future clients.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/871aee443bc3808cd89c5fc1e4ba2514\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"719\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>Palantir</span></p><p>Once again, Alek Karp put one of the most bullish slides in the Q3 shareholder letter rather than the Q3 presentation. Quite frankly, this slide is something many investors are probably overlooking, and it is critical for the bull thesis. On a TTM basis in Q3 2020, PLTR&#39;s new customer base declined by -29.41%, as they only generated 12 new customers vs. 17 in the year prior. PLTR wasn&#39;t a well-known company in 2020, and for those who knew of PLTR, the common perception was that they were a black box company specializing in platforms for the military-industrial complex.</p><p>PLTR didn&#39;t go public until the fall of 2020, and after they did, their new customer base exploded as more information about PLTR was circulated, and companies saw successful use cases from their industry peers. In 2021 PLTR added 49 additional new customers on a TTM basis in Q3, up 408.33% YoY, as they finished with 61 new customers. In Q3 of 2022, PLTR experienced a huge increase in new customers. PLTR&#39;s new customer base in Q3 of 2022 on a TTM basis grew by 119.67% or 73 new customers YoY to 134.</p><p>I wasn&#39;t thrilled with the net dollar retention being stuck at 119% for 2 consecutive quarters, but seeing the cohort growth in new customers, there will be plenty of chances to upsell customers and add additional functionality to their contracts. Over the last 2 years, PLTR has added 195 new customers, and while new customer growth has decelerated on a percentage basis, it has increased in size YoY. Based on the previous 2 years, PLTR could end up having 450-500 customers by this time next year. If PLTR replicates its 134 new customer growth over the next 12 months, it will put them at 471 customers.</p><p>I was very critical of PLTR&#39;s revenue growth and margins due to the level of stock-based compensation that has been issued, but there is certainly a thesis that the growth hasn&#39;t materialized from their newest customers, and 2022 is an anomaly year from a revenue and margin standpoint.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/40a0de766ef9082a731f07346df7c55b\" tg-width=\"539\" tg-height=\"262\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>Palantir</span></p><p>No matter how I look at it, PLTR is growing, even though revenue growth will fall short of PLTR&#39;s previous projections. Q3 revenue is up 22% YoY, and the U.S. business is still exploding, as it&#39;s up 31% YoY. In Q3 PLTR&#39;s total contract value closed at $1.3 billion, while they closed 78 deals worth a minimum of $1 million. Of these 78 deals, 32 were at least worth $5 million, and 19 exceeded $10 million. PLTR ended Q3, having closed 273 deals YTD, which is up 63% YoY from 167 in 2021, which drove its total remaining deal value up 14% YoY to $4.1 billion.</p><p>For all of the shortcomings, there are many aspects to build a bullish thesis around. I am not closing the door on PLTR as I can argue a bullish case to myself in the same fashion I can create a doom and gloom scenario. At the end of the day, PLTR has $2.4 billion of cash on the balance sheet with $0 of debt and is well capitalized for the future. PLTR doesn&#39;t have a single concern with rising rates impacting their expenses, and there is a path to profitability and large amounts of FCF in the future. The only questions are, will PLTR continue growing in a similar fashion, and will its new customer base eventually drive additional net dollar retention levels?</p><h2>Conclusion</h2><p>As a reformed PLTR bull, I am currently neutral on the company. I would need to see revenue get back to the 30%+ projection, margins improve, and expenses either stay in-line or decrease to get bullish again.</p><p>That being said, I am not bearish and find Palantir&#39;s current valuation interesting. I plan on adding more shares and dollar cost averaging, as I am not ready to call it a loss and put this investment in the tax-loss harvesting bucket. I need 3 more quarters of data before making a final decision on PLTR, as there is still a path to billions of FCF in 2030, but the current revenue and margin declines are certainly concerning. I dislike adjusted numbers and would rather look at straight FCF, which is cash from operations minus CapEx or purchases of property and equipment. In 2021, PLTR ended the year generating $1.54 billion in revenue and $321.22 million of FCF for an FCF margin of 20.83%.I built a model based on PLTR's commentary and their 2021 FCF margin. In my model, which is below, I had PLTR's revenue grow by 30% through 2025, then drop down to 25%, 22%, 19%, 17%, and 15% from years 2026 - 2030. Based on 2021's FCF margin of 20.83%, if these revenue growth numbers were in the ballpark, PLTR would have generated $2.53 billion of FCF in 2030 from $12.16 billion of revenue. Based on a 25x FCF multiple, PLTR would have a $63.30 billion market cap; at a 35x multiple, PLTR would have an $88.62 billion market; and at a 45x multiple, PLTR would have a $113.94 billion market cap. YTD over the first 9 months of 2022, PLR's revenue has increased by 25.99% YoY ($288.23 million) to $1.4 billion, but its cash from operations has declined by -$95.45 million (-39.70%), and their CapEx has increased by $28.33 million (417.60%), placing its FCF at $109.87 million.
