Tesla</h2><p>CEO Elon Musk has often said manufacturing efficiency would be Tesla's long-term advantage, and the company is making good on that notion. Its theoretical annual production capacity now exceeds 1 million electric vehicles (EVs), and despite headwinds created by chip shortages, Tesla delivered over 936,000 vehicles in 2021, up 87% from the prior year.</p><p>More importantly, as production capacity has scaled in both the U.S. and China, Tesla's cost per vehicle has fallen, dropping 55% between 2017 and the first quarter of 2021. That efficiency is due in part to Tesla's 2170 battery cell, a technology that Musk has called "the highest energy density cell in the world, and also the cheapest." To that end, Tesla pays an estimated $187 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) for its battery packs -- the most expensive part of an EV. That's 24% lower than the industry average and 10% lower than the next-closest competitor.</p><p>Additionally, through November 2021, Tesla held 13.7% market share in terms of EV sales, easily besting the second-place EV manufacturer <b>BYD</b>, which captured 9% market share. Collectively, the company's improving efficiency and its dominant position have translated into impressive financial results on both the top and bottom lines.</p><table><thead><tr><th><p>Metric</p></th><th><p>Q3 2019</p></th><th><p>Q3 2021</p></th><th><p>CAGR</p></th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td width=\"156\"><p>Revenue (TTM)</p></td><td width=\"156\"><p>$24.4 million</p></td><td width=\"156\"><p>$46.9 billion</p></td><td width=\"156\"><p>39%</p></td></tr><tr><td width=\"156\"><p>Free cash flow (TTM)</p></td><td width=\"156\"><p>$873 million</p></td><td width=\"156\"><p>$2.6 billion</p></td><td width=\"156\"><p>71%</p></td></tr></tbody></table><p>Data source: YCharts. TTM = trailing 12 months. CAGR = compound annual growth rate.</p><p>Despite Tesla's past success, I think the company's best days are yet to come. Production of the Tesla Semi (a semi-tractor trailer) is slated to start in 2022, and the trucking industry is ripe for disruption. The company also plans to integrate its new 4680 battery cell into vehicles this year, a technology that should reinforce its current cost advantages. Specifically, management believes the 4680 battery cell will cut the cost per kWh by 56% and boost EV range by 54%.</p><p>Further down the road, Tesla aims to launch an autonomous ride-hailing service, a market that ARK Invest analysts value at $1.2 trillion by 2030. While Tesla's full self-driving software is still in the works, Musk has hinted that the company would have a fully autonomous $25,000 EV in late 2023 or 2024. But even if Tesla misses that target, the company still appears to have a big head start in the race to build a self-driving car. That's why I plan to hold this stock forever.</p><h2>2. Zscaler</h2><p>Zscaler specializes in cybersecurity. Its cloud platform, the Zero Trust Exchange, is spread across 150 data centers, creating a global network that is fast, safe, and reliable. This distributed architecture, known as a secure access service edge (SASE), allows clients to access corporate resources from any device or location, while also eliminating the IT burden of buying and managing on-site hardware. In short, Zscaler is the new corporate network.</p><p>Specifically, Zscaler Private Access (ZPA) safeguards internally managed resources, like software hosted in a private data center; and Zscaler Internet Access (ZIA) offers the same protection for externally managed resources, such as applications hosted in the public cloud. More recently, the company expanded its offering with Zscaler Digital <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/EXP.AU\">Experience</a> (ZDX), an infrastructure performance monitoring solution, and Zscaler Cloud Protection (ZCP), a suite of tools that allows clients to secure cloud workloads.</p><p>Collectively, those products fuel digital transformation, keeping corporate networks secure no matter whether the information is stored on-site or in the cloud, nor whether it's accessed by employees in the office or those working remotely. To that end, research firm <b>Gartner</b> believes 60% of enterprises will have plans in place to adopt SASE networks by 2025, up from just 10% in 2020.</p><p>More importantly, Gartner has recognized Zscaler as the industry leader for 10 consecutive years, and that advantage has been a powerful growth driver for this cybersecurity company.</p><table><thead><tr><th><p>Metric</p></th><th><p>Q1 2020</p></th><th><p>Q1 2022</p></th><th><p>CAGR</p></th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td width=\"156\"><p>Revenue (TTM)</p></td><td width=\"156\"><p>$333.1 million</p></td><td width=\"156\"><p>$761.0 million</p></td><td width=\"156\"><p>51%</p></td></tr><tr><td width=\"156\"><p>Free cash flow (TTM)</p></td><td width=\"156\"><p>$33.5 million</p></td><td width=\"156\"><p>$184.9 million</p></td><td width=\"156\"><p>135%</p></td></tr></tbody></table><p>Data source: YCharts. The company currently serves 5,600 clients, comprising 26 million paid seats. But management puts the near-term opportunity at 335 million seats, which brings the company's addressable market to $72 billion. However, Zscaler could extend its services to smaller businesses (fewer than 2,000 employees), which would push its opportunity above 600 million seats.</p><p>More broadly, as the best-in-class network security solution, the company should see strong demand in the coming years as more enterprises seek to protect their sensitive data. About a year later, there have been signs that this crackdownis easing as regulatory agencies took a step back and are now focusing on companies who are violating specific business practices, which Alibaba, for the most part, does not partake in.</p><p>However, after the company's share price stabilized, US regulatory authorities began evaluating Chinese owned companies which were listed in the United States on US-based exchanges for possible delisting. This sent the company's share price back down towards the levels it was at during the Chinese crackdown. As no material changes to its structure or its growth prospects took place over the course of this event, I continue to believe in the company's resiliency and that current valuations present a unique investment opportunity for folks who are patient and can wait through a lot of high-profile noise which is nearly certain to emerge as the world's two economic superpowers collide.</p><p>Overall, there are certainly risks associated with this investment and any investment in a company which is under scrutiny and potential delisting, but for me - the reward is easily worth the risk at this point in time.</p><p>Here are the reasons why.</p><h2>Revenue Growth Is Steady</h2><p>Alibaba has so many revenue streams and programs that it would take several articles to go through them all, as their650 page 20-F(foreign company version of 10K) shows. But there are several revenue streams of theirs which I believe constitute an outsized portion of their growth prospects. Let's zero in.</p><p>The first one is their<b>cloud business</b>. While cloud computing is continuing to replace a significant portion of the worlds standard IT infrastructure, the company is focused on not only maximizing their cloud business in the People's Republic of China but also looking at international markets, particularly in Eastern Asia and the Asia-Pacific region as a whole, to continue and grow this business. Getting in the door early in a lot of these other countries, before they fully become a developed nation status and garner outside investments, is key to maintaining a long term presence.</p><p>The company also has another advantage, similar to Amazon (AMZN) in the United States - their cloud margins are so large that they use those profits to subsidize other expansion opportunities like their retail and commerce business expansion. Another plus is that since their margins are so large after all the infrastructure investment they put in, they have a much lower potential price point than other competitors in the Asia-Pacific region and can win cloud contracts which will aid their overall expansion efforts.</p><p>The second part is the <b>retail and commerce business</b>. I realize that these 2 business segments amount to a majority of their revenues, but they also amount to the largest portion of their expansion potential. Allowing merchants in other Asia-Pacific region nations to seamlessly sell their products and run their small businesses across the region and the world is a huge plus and as these nations become more and more of economic powerhouses, the company is set to reap the benefits of these early investments.</p><p>The company has been investing in deploying resources and building infrastructure in other regions across the world, as well as partnering with local tech and retail companies to provide their services. This, I believe, will be a big part of enabling their continued high-pace growth, even as they've begun to saturate in the People's Republic of China with their commerce platform.</p><h2>What It Means For 2030(ish)</h2><p>Alibaba Group, according toanalyst estimates aggregated by Seeking Alpha, is projected to report revenues which are higher by about 63% by 2028, rising from $134 billion, the projected figure for this upcoming year, to just shy of $218 billion.</p><p>This represents a CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of 10.2% over the next 5 years when it comes to the company's revenues. Translating that to earnings shows how the company's investment are going to pay off, while they continue to work on expanding their per-user revenues which drives profits.</p><p>Over the same time period, the company is projected to report a 94% bump in EPS, rising from a projected $7.34 in the upcoming fiscal year to $14.29 in 2028. This represent a CAGR of 14.2% over the next 5 years.</p><p>There are a few reasons for this, with the most important one being margin expansion.</p><h2>Margins Expected To Increase</h2><p>Even though the company has already admitted that their user base, comprised of over 1 billion monthly average users in the People's Republic of China, is relatively saturated - they're working on expanding the per-wallet revenue, which translated to higher profits as costs for those users are already accounted for in most scenarios across their commerce platforms.</p><p>These are two of the main reasons I believe the company is set to outperform these expectations - I don't believe that analysts consensus, linked earlier, fully account for the company's international expansion efforts and that an increased revenue base may mean that short term margins will contract - the longer term margins are set to outperform as revenues increase and thus long term growth is set to outperform.</p><p>This means that a company which is currently expected to report higher margins, as evident by the higher CAGR in earnings vs revenues, is expected to, I believe, report faster growing earnings per share figures starting 2 to 3 years from now due to their international expansion efforts. This means that they are highly likely to outperform the historical annual market performance of roughly 10%. There's also another benefit I believe other companies with higher debt loads are going to begin to face which Alibaba will not.</p><h2>Interest Expense Control</h2><p>As interest rates continue to rise all around the world, Alibaba is using their cash pile to control the increase of debt and refinance their existing debt to lower overall interest expense. Even though the company's overall debt payments and interest expense are almost negligible relative to their income, the focus on this now can potentially save them several billions of dollars a year over the next decade, which can be used to increase shareholder value and help them compete for new users in new international markets.</p><p>After peaking in 2018 with the company paying $612 million a year in interest expense, they've seen a steady reduction every year since and now pay $504 million a year in interest expense.</p><p>From 2020 to 2021, the company took on a nice new chunk of debt, rising from just shy of $17 billion to about $20.7 billion. Since then, it has remained relatively steady as they currently have about $20.6 billion in long term debt. They've refinanced some of that debt and worked to raise money in more friendly means to avoid the rising interest rate environment.</p><p>As the company has a significant cash pile, I believe they can continue and work to reduce their debt pile to help with valuation, but given the low overall interest rate they pay, it's not as much of a priority, as long as it doesn't substantially increase.</p><h2>Valuation vs Expectations</h2><p>Currently, the company is trading at about 7x to 12x forward earnings, depending on how far out you go. Given that I believe that international expansion may keep margins at currently projected levels, I am opting to look at revenue multiples for the next 5 years to find an adequate valuation.</p><p>Comparing the company to Amazon is the most obvious choice given the similarity of their business structures and segments. Amazon is currently trading at about 2.8x forward sales for the upcoming year and 1.5x forward sales for 2028 projected sales. The companies have more or less a similar revenue growth rate projection but Alibaba is trading at a significantly lower multiple.</p><table><tbody><tr><td>2023</td><td>2024</td><td>2025</td><td>2026</td><td>2027</td><td>2028</td></tr><tr><td>Alibaba</td><td>+5.9%</td><td>+13.6%</td><td>+11.5%</td><td>+10.7%</td><td>+7.2%</td><td>+8.4%</td></tr><tr><td>1.8x</td><td>1.6x</td><td>1.4x</td><td>1.3x</td><td>1.2x</td><td>1.1x</td></tr><tr><td>Amazon</td><td>+11.2%</td><td>+15.4%</td><td>+14.6%</td><td>+12.3%</td><td>+13.4%</td><td>+12.7%</td></tr><tr><td>2.8x</td><td>2.4x</td><td>2.1x</td><td>1.9x</td><td>1.7x</td><td>1.5x</td></tr></tbody></table><p>(Source: Seeking Alpha Aggregate - Analyst Projections -BABA&AMZN)</p><p>An easier way to look at it is the percentage of Alibaba's growth relative to Amazon's, which although it shows that certain years may be comparable, most are not and thus Alibaba, under current projections, should be trading higher.</p><table><tbody><tr><td>2023</td><td>2024</td><td>2025</td><td>2026</td><td>2027</td><td>2028</td></tr><tr><td>Growth</td><td>52.7%</td><td>88.3%</td><td>78.8%</td><td>89.0%</td><td>53.7%</td><td>66.1%</td></tr><tr><td>Multiple</td><td>64.3%</td><td>66.7%</td><td>66.7%</td><td>68.4%</td><td>70.6%</td><td>73.3%</td></tr></tbody></table><h2>Conclusion - Cheap & Valuable</h2><p>Given that the aforementioned comparison to Amazon concludes that under their current projections, Alibaba is set to spend the upcoming year slightly overvalued relative to Amazon, it will spend the following 3 at a significantly lower one. This is before my expected outperformance when it comes to international expansion efforts alongside their margin expansion from working to increase their per-user revenue streams.</p><p>The later out projections are still there, but that's where I expect Alibaba to do their best once their international margins expand towards their domestic ones. I believe that by 2028, the company will be outperforming their current revenue expectations by about 20% and current earnings per share expectations by about 15%, representing a potential 13% annual rise in revenues and 16% rise in EPS over the following 5 years of the company's growth plan.</p><p>This, I believe, will easily outperform the broader market and offer investors a decent exposure to several fast growing markets in a region of the world which is becoming increasingly difficult to get without restrictions.</p><p>This investment does not come without risks, especially of delisting, but other excellent Seeking Alpha contributors have dissected the prospects of delisting and I won't bore you with repeating them here for the 10th time.</p><p>I remain highly bullish on Alibaba and have been and will continue to, add to my position over the course of the next few weeks if the share price remains where it is now.</p></body></html>","source":"seekingalpha","collect":0,"html":"<!DOCTYPE html>\n<html>\n<head>\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; However, I still believe that long-term investors will ultimately benefit a great deal from buying autonomous driving stocks. Many companies, including Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOG, NASDAQ:GOOGL), General Motors (NYSE:GM), Velodyne (NASDAQ:VLDR), Embark (NASDAQ:EMBK) and Aurora Innovation (NASDAQ:AUR), are making a great deal of progress when it comes to commercializing self-driving technology on a significant scale.</p><p>Meanwhile, fears of the coronavirus have dropped tremendously, and the Biden administration seems to have decided recently to quickly facilitate the proliferation of autonomous vehicles.</p><p>For evidence of the latter trend, consider the fact that the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recently decided to allow “fully autonomous vehicles” to be built without certain safety features previously required in all vehicles, such as steering wheels. Moreover, U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said earlier this month that his department does not want to prevent innovation in the autonomous vehicle space. He also predicted that regulation of the sector would evolve a great deal during the rest of the 2020’s.</p><p>And at the beginning of March, Intel (NASDQ:INTC) filed papers with the Securities and Exchange Commission to launch an IPO of its Mobileye unit, which develops and sells self-driving and advanced driving assistance systems. If Mobileye’s shares attain a high valuation, they could provide a positive catalyst to other companies in the sector.</p><p>Finally, since self-driving automobiles would save both businesses and consumers a great deal of time and money, I continue to believe that the technology will prove to be quite lucrative for the firms that successfully introduce it widely.</p><p>As such, I think that the best ways for investors to benefit from the ultimate proliferation of self-driving vehicles is by buying the following autonomous driving stocks:</p><ul><li>Aurora Innovation (AUR)</li><li>Embark (EMBK)</li><li>Velodyne (VLDR)</li></ul><h2>Autonomous Vehicle Stocks to Buy: Aurora Innovation (AUR)</h2><p>Encouragingly, way back in 2019, Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) invested in Aurora. In the process, it somewhat validated the company’s technology. It also helped make me more confident that Hyundai (OTCMKTS:HYMTF) also invested in the company in 2019.</p><p>Recently, Aurora announced that it had developed self-driving technology that is able to “work across multiple vehicle types.” That level of standardization should greatly facilitate the use of Aurora’s system by transportation companies and automakers.</p><p>Also increasing my confidence in AUR stock is the fact that the tech startup is partnering with “Volvo on autonomous trucks and Toyota to develop a fleet of self-driving Siennas,” according to Cnet.</p><p>The current market capitalization of AUR stock is $6 billion. That’s not low, but I believe that it greatly undervalues the company’s long-term potential.</p><h2>Embark (EMBK)</h2><p>The company sells self-driving software for trucks called Embark Driver. It charges trucking companies a per-mile subscription fee for the use of the software.</p><p>According to the company’s CEO, Alex Rodrigues, Embark uses technology that enables “trucks to update … maps in real time, which is critical when encountering situations like construction work zones, particularly when you’re on a two-lane highway and there are no alternative routes.” Moreover, the company’s system can be easily “integrated” with trucks made by any major manufacturer, and “some of the top carriers in the United States … [are its] customers.” For October, the company said that it had received “14,200 reservations for Embark-equipped autonomous trucks, more than twice the nearest public competitor” at that point.</p><p>Rodrigues noted that, in the U.S., human truck drivers cannot drive their vehicles for more than 11 hours each day. And that Embark’s software can dramatically expand that number.</p><p>Finally, the CEO reported that “over 1 million real world miles” had been driven using the company’s software “without a single department of Transportation reportable safety incident.”</p><p>Stephen Houghton, who was named the company’s COO in February, worked on autonomous vehicles for Amazon and Cruise (currently owned by GM) for six years.</p><h2>Autonomous Vehicle Stocks to Buy: Velodyne (VLDR)</h2><p>In a very positive development, Velodyne announced last month that Amazon had purchased a warrant that could enable the e-commerce giant to buy nearly 40 million shares of VLDR stock. The warrant will become exercisable “based on discretionary payments made by Amazon pursuant to existing commercial agreements between Velodyne and Amazon,” Seeking Alpha explained. I think the deal suggests that Amazon believes that Velodyne has a great deal of potential.</p><p>Also note that in 2017, Amazon obtained a warrant to buy up to 55.3 million shares of Plug Power (NASDAQ:PLUG) stock. PLUG stock finished 2017 at $1.93. On March 18, 2022, it closed at $26.15.</p><p>In 2021, Velodyne’s shipments of sensors jumped 35% versus 2020 to slightly over 15,000. In 2019, the company shipped just over 12,000 sensors. Last quarter, it sold a record 4,900 sensors. The company’s revenue dropped 1.7% year-over-year because of its strategy of using lower prices to gain market share. Ultimately, however, I expect that approach will be quite successful.</p><p>VLDR stock is trading at a reasonable trailing price-sales ratio of 7.67x, according to Yahoo Finance.</p></body></html>","source":"lsy1606302653667","collect":0,"html":"<!DOCTYPE html>\n<html>\n<head>\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; charset=utf-8\" />\n<meta name=\"viewport\" content=\"width=device-width,initial-scale=1.0,minimum-scale=1.0,maximum-scale=1.0,user-scalable=no\"/>\n<meta name=\"format-detection\" content=\"telephone=no,email=no,address=no\" />\n<title>3 Autonomous Vehicle Stocks to Buy Ahead of the Mobileye IPO</title>\n<style type=\"text/css\">\na,abbr,acronym,address,applet,article,aside,audio,b,big,blockquote,body,canvas,caption,center,cite,code,dd,del,details,dfn,div,dl,dt,\nem,embed,fieldset,figcaption,figure,footer,form,h1,h2,h3,h4,h5,h6,header,hgroup,html,i,iframe,img,ins,kbd,label,legend,li,mark,menu,nav,\nobject,ol,output,p,pre,q,ruby,s,samp,section,small,span,strike,strong,sub,summary,sup,table,tbody,td,tfoot,th,thead,time,tr,tt,u,ul,var,video{ font:inherit;margin:0;padding:0;vertical-align:baseline;border:0 }\nbody{ font-size:16px; line-height:1.5; color:#999; background:transparent; }\n.wrapper{ overflow:hidden;word-break:break-all;padding:10px; }\nh1,h2{ font-weight:normal; line-height:1.35; margin-bottom:.6em; }\nh3,h4,h5,h6{ line-height:1.35; margin-bottom:1em; }\nh1{ font-size:24px; }\nh2{ font-size:20px; }\nh3{ font-size:18px; }\nh4{ font-size:16px; }\nh5{ font-size:14px; }\nh6{ font-size:12px; }\np,ul,ol,blockquote,dl,table{ margin:1.2em 0; }\nul,ol{ margin-left:2em; }\nul{ list-style:disc; }\nol{ list-style:decimal; }\nli,li p{ margin:10px 0;}\nimg{ max-width:100%;display:block;margin:0 auto 1em; }\nblockquote{ color:#B5B2B1; border-left:3px solid #aaa; padding:1em; }\nstrong,b{font-weight:bold;}\nem,i{font-style:italic;}\ntable{ width:100%;border-collapse:collapse;border-spacing:1px;margin:1em 0;font-size:.9em; }\nth,td{ padding:5px;text-align:left;border:1px solid #aaa; }\nth{ font-weight:bold;background:#5d5d5d; }\n.symbol-link{font-weight:bold;}\n/* header{ border-bottom:1px solid #494756; } */\n.title{ margin:0 0 8px;line-height:1.3;color:#ddd; }\n.meta {color:#5e5c6d;font-size:13px;margin:0 0 .5em; }\na{text-decoration:none; color:#2a4b87;}\n.meta .head { display: inline-block; overflow: hidden}\n.head .h-thumb { width: 30px; height: 30px; margin: 0; padding: 0; border-radius: 50%; float: left;}\n.head .h-content { margin: 0; padding: 0 0 0 9px; float: left;}\n.head .h-name {font-size: 13px; color: #eee; margin: 0;}\n.head .h-time {font-size: 11px; color: #7E829C; margin: 0;line-height: 11px;}\n.small {font-size: 12.5px; display: inline-block; transform: scale(0.9); -webkit-transform: scale(0.9); transform-origin: left; -webkit-transform-origin: left;}\n.smaller {font-size: 12.5px; display: inline-block; transform: scale(0.8); -webkit-transform: scale(0.8); transform-origin: left; -webkit-transform-origin: left;}\n.bt-text {font-size: 12px;margin: 1.5em 0 0 0}\n.bt-text p {margin: 0}\n</style>\n</head>\n<body>\n<div class=\"wrapper\">\n<header>\n<h2 class=\"title\">\n3 Autonomous Vehicle Stocks to Buy Ahead of the Mobileye IPO\n</h2>\n\n<h4 class=\"meta\">\n\n\n2022-03-26 07:44 GMT+8 <a href=https://investorplace.com/2022/03/3-autonomous-vehicle-stocks-to-buy-ahead-of-the-mobileye-ipo/><strong>investorplace</strong></a>\n\n\n</h4>\n\n</header>\n<article>\n<div>\n<p>Restrictions due to the coronavirus and regulatory issues have slowed the progress of autonomous vehicles more than I thought they would. Consensus estimates point to a revenue CAGR of just 4.6% through FY24. Moreover, its adjusted EBITDA margins are likely to remain consistent. But, AAPL is not projected to gain leverage towards its profitability. Hence, bearish investors claim they don't understand how the Cupertino company can continue to justify its current valuation.</p><p>But, we think investors need to step back and consider the critical growth drivers for AAPL moving forward. Data source: Trefis, author</span></p><p>Readers can refer to the above model, where iPhone's revenue is estimated to increase at a CAGR of just 2.2% over the next five years. However, Apple's services segment (including App Store's revenue) is projected to increase its revenue at a CAGR of 11% through FY26, reaching $115B. We think these estimates are relatively conservative. Based on these estimates, a SOTP implied fair value of $159 was reached for AAPL stock. It also includes other segments but was mainly driven by the two critical segments above. iPhone and services accounted for 43% and 25% of its SOTP valuation.</p><p>But, we believe that these estimates may not have captured the multiple growth drivers underpinning the App Store. Why?</p><p>Based on recent estimates by Sensor Tower, App Store's revenue is estimated to increase at a CAGR of 20.7% through CY25, reaching $185B. Notably, it's way ahead of the estimate of $115B that we discussed earlier for the entire services segment. Importantly, we have not even included revenue from the other services other than App Store's contribution. Therefore, we think that readers need to consider that the Street consensus may have significantly underestimated the prowess of Apple's highly profitable (estimated operating margin > 70%) App Store.</p><p>We are not saying that Sensor Tower's estimate is the source of truth. But, we wanted to highlight that investors should pay more attention to Apple's key services segment. Sensor Tower presented a region by region breakdown, which we thought seemed credible, and we encourage investors to monitor closely.</p><p><b>Don't Ignore Apple's Metaverse Ambitions</b></p><p>Renowned TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo estimated that Apple's AR/VR device would be released sometime in Q4'22. We believe this is significant as it augurs well for Apple's ambitions into the metaverse. There's little doubt that Meta Platforms (FB) and Microsoft(MSFT) are strengthening their lead in the consumer and commercial AR/VR space.According to TrendForce, global AR/VR device shipment is estimated to reach 12.02M units, up 26.4% YoY in 2022. Moreover, the market is estimated to grow rapidly through 2025, reaching 25.76M units at a CAGR of 38.8%. Notably, it expects Meta's Oculus devices to maintain a 66% consumer market share. But, TrendForce also noted that (edited):</p><blockquote>AR/VR device suppliers may look to expand their user base and increase their market penetration via low-priced yet high-spec devices,<i>while compensating for their reduced hardware profitability through software sales</i>. (TrendForce)</blockquote><p>Software sales indeed. Apple runs the largest mobile ecosystem globally, which dwarfs Google Play's (GOOG) (GOOGL) revenue. Therefore, we believe the entry of Apple into the metaverse game could significantly raise the company's monetization opportunities. Theories that Meta Platform has ambitions to displace Apple as the next-gen computing platform abound. However, we have also discussed thatMeta Platforms' eventual metaverse will unlikely be the only virtual world we will ever experience. Instead, the metaverse will likely be a series of interconnected virtual worlds that will be interoperable. So, Apple could still be the critical ecosystem owner as creators build their virtual worlds to be monetized through the App Store, reaching out to Apple's more than 1B (and growing) installed base.</p><p>TrendForce also added that global VR content revenue is estimated to grow at a rapid 40% CAGR through 2025, reaching $8.3B. The content will be varied but primarily consisting of "gaming/entertainment, videos, and social interactions." Therefore, Apple can continue to leverage such opportunities through its massive ecosystem. We think these opportunities are so novel that it hasn't even been written into Apple's consensus estimates just yet. But, once Apple's AR/VR devices are launched, we believe that the revenue runway could become even more apparent. However, we must still caution that we are still very early into Apple's metaverse ambitions. But, we believe that Apple will be a critical player in defining the metaverse through its ecosystem.
