Elon Musk has lost his spot as the world's richest human, but $Tesla(TSLA.US)$ shareholders are the ones who are suffering. On Monday, Musk dropped from first to second place on the list of the world's richest humans. He fell behind LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton (MC. That means arresting the slide means changing Musk's behavior on his social media platform. Tesla (TSLA) stock dropped 6.3% to start the week, finishing Monday's trading session at $167.82. The latest data on the consumer-price index showed that inflation rose 7.1% in November from a year ago, compared with 7.7% in October -- and cooler than economists surveyed by The Wall Street Journal had expected. Core inflation, which excludes food and energy, increased by 6%, softening from 6.3%. "I'm happily surprised. We have cooler headline inflation and cooler core," said Fahad Kamal, chief investment officer at Kleinwort Hambros. The consumer-price index data has been among the most widely anticipated on Wall Street, with many investors jittery about the path of inflation and how it will shape the Fed's rate increases over the next year. CPI days have grown more volatile throughout the year, with stock and options traders bracing for large one-day moves around the data releases.

Stocks closed slightly higher Friday after a positive consumer-sentiment report helped ease investors' concerns about new data that hinted inflation could remain a problem for the Federal Reserve next year. Indexes had started the day lower as traders reacted to Commerce Department figures showing that prices for services continued to climb faster than hoped last month. Those numbers sent bond prices lower and kept the Nasdaq and S&P 500 on course for a third straight week of declines. But the indexes pared some of the week's losses after the midmorning release of the University of Michigan's consumer survey showed that households are still optimistic about the economy.

Here are key takeaways from minutes of the Federal Reserve’s Dec. 13-14 meeting, released Wednesday: A number of officials stressed that the decision to step down to a 50 basis-point hike, following four straight 75 basis-point increases, “was not an indication of any weakening of the committee’s resolve to achieve its price-stability goal” nor a judgment that inflation was persistently slowing Fed warns financial markets not to underestimate the central bank’s resolve to bring down inflation, as minutes cite policymakers saying: “An unwarranted easing in financial conditions, especially if driven by a misperception by the public of the committee’s reaction function, would complicate the committee’s effort to restore price stability”

Federal Reserve Raises Key U.S. Interest Rate by 50 Bps to Range of 4.25% to 4.5% Federal Reserve raises key U.S. interest rate by 50 bps to range of 4.25% to 4.5%. The Committee seeks to achieve maximum employment and inflation at the rate of 2 percent over the longer run. In support of these goals, the Committee decided to raise the target range for the federal funds rate to 4-1/4 to 4-1/2 percent.  The Committee anticipates that ongoing increases in the target range will be appropriate in order to attain a stance of monetary policy that is sufficiently restrictive to return inflation to 2 percent over time. As part of its policy decision, the Federal Open Market Committee voted to authorize and direct the Open Market Desk at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, until instructed

After years of rapid growth amid bumper profits, the tech sector is now firmly in cost-cutting mode. Alphabet's Google was the latest company to highlight this Thursday, confirming plans to merge the team working on its Waze mapping service with those on its Maps product. The restructuring will begin Friday, the Wall Street Journal reported, with no layoffs planned. Google acquired Waze for more than $1 billion in 2013, during the good times. Google did not respond to Barron's request for comment early on the day. Some of tech's biggest names, including Facebook owner Meta and Twitter, have opted for mass layoffs, while others, such as Amazon, have implemented a hiring freeze. An advertising revenue slowdown, higher interest rates, and surging inflation have brought an end to the era of
