Overall, the stock is down 42% from its high in January 2021.

Investors are concerned about the business as consumer behavior evolves rapidly and unevenly worldwide. Regardless of the near-term challenges of navigating a global company during a pandemic, Disney's long-term prospects are excellent.

The streaming segment is gaining traction

The core of Disney's business is a treasure trove of proprietary characters and stories that have delighted consumers for decades. The difficult-to-replicate intellectual property flows into Disney's theme parks, movies, series, merchandise, cruise ships, hotels, and more. The crucial element of its business is based on proprietary content. That means competitors cannot infringe on its business without spending decades and billions of dollars to build a suite of characters and stories that spark consumers' enthusiasm.

DIS Revenue (Quarterly) data by YCharts

But the past decade has been tricky. Disney has had to navigate the transitioning of its legacy cable TV business over to streaming. The legacy method was a boon for The House of Mouse, so it was careful not to switch to streaming hastily. Nevertheless, in 2019 it committed to streaming entirely and launched its flagship service Disney+. As of Jan. 1, the service boasts 130 million subscribers, and the streaming segment as a whole (which also includes Hulu and ESPN+) has attracted 196.4 million.

Management forecasts that Disney+ will reach between 230 million and 260 million subs by 2024 and be profitable. To put that potential into context, Netflix surpassed 200 million subs in 2021 and reported revenue of $29.7 billion that year. In 2019, before the coronavirus disrupted operations, Disney's revenue was $69.6 billion. Home to iconic franchises like Pixar, Star Wars, Marvel, and Mickey Mouse, Disney can reasonably reach and surpass Netflix's achievements.

The theme parks are emerging stronger than before

In 2019, Disney's theme parks generated $24.7 billion in revenue and $6.1 billion in operating income. Of course, the pandemic devastated the business, but it is bouncing back and more vital than ever. In its recently completed quarter, which ended in January, Disney's theme park segment produced $7.2 billion in revenue and $2.5 billion in operating income. Despite self-imposed capacity restrictions, the segment is on pace to eclipse 2019 totals.

DIS Operating Income (Annual) data by YCharts

When the parks were forced to shut down to guests, management developed and implemented several improvements. Overall, the stock is down 42% from its high in January 2021.Investors are concerned about the business as consumer behavior evolves rapidly and unevenly worldwide. Regardless of the near-term challenges of navigating a global company during a pandemic, Disney's long-term prospects are excellent. The streaming segment is gaining tractionThe core of Disney's business is a treasure trove of proprietary characters and stories that have delighted consumers for decades. The difficult-to-replicate intellectual property flows into Disney's theme parks, movies, series, merchandise, cruise ships, hotels, and more. The crucial element of its business is based on proprietary content. That means competitors cannot infringe on its business without spending decades and billions of dollars to build a suite of characters and stories that spark consumers' enthusiasm.DIS Revenue (Quarterly) data by YChartsBut the past decade has been tricky. As of Jan. 1, the service boasts 130 million subscribers, and the streaming segment as a whole (which also includes Hulu and ESPN+) has attracted 196.4 million.Management forecasts that Disney+ will reach between 230 million and 260 million subs by 2024 and be profitable. The theme parks are emerging stronger than beforeIn 2019, Disney's theme parks generated $24.7 billion in revenue and $6.1 billion in operating income. Of course, the pandemic devastated the business, but it is bouncing back and more vital than ever. In its recently completed quarter, which ended in January, Disney's theme park segment produced $7.2 billion in revenue and $2.5 billion in operating income. Despite self-imposed capacity restrictions, the segment is on pace to eclipse 2019 totals.DIS Operating Income (Annual) data by YChartsWhen the parks were forced to shut down to guests, management developed and implemented several improvements. These included a digital reservation system that allows the company to manage attendance effectively, mobile ordering at food and concession stands, and premium features like Genie+, which enables guests to pay for the privilege of skipping lines. This likely means that the parks will be more profitable from now on than before the pandemic's onset. The near term might be volatile as consumer behavior changes with COVID-19 trends. However, Disney's unique and valuable assets are likely to attract consumers in large numbers over the longer run. According to a White House memo, the pioneering icon will begin production of new equipment that will allow non-Tesla EV drivers to use Tesla Superchargers.

According to Jalopnik, Tesla has been running a pilot program to allow EV drivers in Europe to access its charging network. In part, the announcement bolstered EV stocks because it arrived unexpectedly quickly. Although Tesla CEO Elon Musk vocally supported an open charging network, he never really converted words into action. Further, Musk and President Joe Biden have not always seen eye to eye.

Now that bygones are apparently bygones, the news appears to be positive for EV stocks. For the non-Tesla names, access to the company’s charging network would go a long way toward easing range anxiety. According to U.S. News & World Report, “Tesla Superchargers are located in all 50 U.S. states, as well as Puerto Rico.”

While premium-vehicle manufacturers like Rivian Automotive(NASDAQ:RIVN) and Lucid Group(NASDAQ:LCID) will enjoy the sudden boost in public charging coverage, the companies that might stand to benefit the most are businesses that are aiming toward middle-income consumers like Canoo(NASDAQ:GOEV), Polestar(NASDAQ:PSNY) and Mullen Automotive(NASDAQ:MULN).

A Gift to EV Stocks

PSNY, GOEV, and MULN closed up 5.1%, 6.2% and 9.4%, respectively. Less excitingly, RIVN closed up 1.1% while LCID has gained 0.9%.

While all non-Tesla EV stocks will enjoy the fruits of Tesla’s infrastructural labor, the companies that are focusing on middle-income consumers will likely disproportionately enjoy the unexpected bounty. And from Tesla’s angle, since it is not yet competing in the middle-income arena, the opening of its charging network isn’t giving up that much of an edge.

As well, Tesla should enjoy a significant boost in revenue. Therefore, the announcement appears to be a gift to all EV stocks.

One Major Question Remains

Still, a nagging question about the opening of the Supercharger network is how Tesla owners will feel about it. Part of paying for the expense of a Tesla EV is exclusive access to the company’s charging ecosystem. According to a White House memo, the pioneering icon will begin production of new equipment that will allow non-Tesla EV drivers to use Tesla Superchargers.According to Jalopnik, Tesla has been running a pilot program to allow EV drivers in Europe to access its charging network. In part, the announcement bolstered EV stocks because it arrived unexpectedly quickly. Although Tesla CEO Elon Musk vocally supported an open charging network, he never really converted words into action. Further, Musk and President Joe Biden have not always seen eye to eye.Now that bygones are apparently bygones, the news appears to be positive for EV stocks. For the non-Tesla names, access to the company’s charging network would go a long way toward easing range anxiety. According to U.S. News & World Report, “Tesla Superchargers are located in all 50 U.S. states, as well as Puerto Rico.”While premium-vehicle manufacturers like Rivian Automotive(NASDAQ:RIVN) and Lucid Group(NASDAQ:LCID) will enjoy the sudden boost in public charging coverage, the companies that might stand to benefit the most are businesses that are aiming toward middle-income consumers like Canoo(NASDAQ:GOEV), Polestar(NASDAQ:PSNY) and Mullen Automotive(NASDAQ:MULN).A Gift to EV StocksPSNY, GOEV, and MULN closed up 5.1%, 6.2% and 9.4%, respectively. Less excitingly, RIVN closed up 1.1% while LCID has gained 0.9%.While all non-Tesla EV stocks will enjoy the fruits of Tesla’s infrastructural labor, the companies that are focusing on middle-income consumers will likely disproportionately enjoy the unexpected bounty. And from Tesla’s angle, since it is not yet competing in the middle-income arena, the opening of its charging network isn’t giving up that much of an edge.As well, Tesla should enjoy a significant boost in revenue. Therefore, the announcement appears to be a gift to all EV stocks. One Major Question RemainsStill, a nagging question about the opening of the Supercharger network is how Tesla owners will feel about it. Part of paying for the expense of a Tesla EV is exclusive access to the company’s charging ecosystem. Now that EV masses will eventually enter the fray, will that make charging a Tesla more inconvenient through longer lines?Obviously, the jury’s still out. Overall, the news is positive for all EV stocks, including TSLA. However, it’s possible that Tesla owners might feel the brand has gotten a little bit diluted.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":338,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[{"author":{"id":"4099453932805960","authorId":"4099453932805960","name":"Vandalart","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/f5110907fea66e085f556c4e5fe74cc5","crmLevel":3,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"authorIdStr":"4099453932805960","idStr":"4099453932805960"},"content":"I have the same thought too! Stocks that also increase their payouts are even better. That's because you could be collecting more dividend income just by simply holding on to the stock for the long term.

Three stocks that recently hiked their dividend payments include CareTrust REIT, Cenovus Energy, and Southern Company. Let's take a closer look at their dividend payments today, and whether investors should expect more rate increases from these stocks in the future.

1. CareTrust REIT

CareTrust is a healthcare-focused real estate investment trust (REIT) that pays an impressive yield of 6.6%. The stock has been falling this year amid general softness in the stock market and worries about a possible recession. However, that hasn't stopped the REIT from providing a top dividend. Last year, it was paying its shareholders $0.265 every quarter, and now that dividend payment is up to $0.275, representing an increase of 3.8%. On an annualized basis, that means investors are collecting $1.10 per share in dividend income.

Although REITs have to pay out 90% of their earnings back to investors, they rely on funds from operations (FFO) to evaluate the safety of their dividend payments. And CareTrust's FFO per share was $1.32 last year, which would be sufficient to cover its dividend today, and still leave plenty of room.

REITs like CareTrust that focus on healthcare (its portfolio is made up of skilled nursing facilities, assisted living facilities, and independent living facilities) are safe given the general stability of the healthcare industry. And that can make rent payments more stable and predictable than if you were to invest in a REIT that focuses on residential housing or retail properties.

With a high yield and room for more increases in the future, CareTrust could be an underrated dividend stock to buy today.

2. Cenovus Energy

Oil and natural gas producer Cenovus Energy recently reported a strong quarter due to high commodity prices. With oil prices at levels not seen in years, the stock has been a hot buy in 2022, soaring 53% year to date and dwarfing the S&P 500, which is down 12% over the same period.

The company's net earnings for the period ended March 31 totaled 1.6 billion Canadian dollars, for a year-over-year increase of 639%. It also reported free funds flow of CA$1.8 billion that was more than triple the prior-year period's tally of CA$594 million. Cenovus is confident that even if oil prices should fall, it can continue to perform well.

Notably, the company has tripled its annual dividend (which is paid quarterly) from CA$0.14 to CA$0.42. Cenovus believes the payout can be sustainable even if the price of West Texas Intermediate, a key benchmark for the industry, falls to around $45 per barrel -- and currently, it's more than double that price.

At 1.8%, Cenovus' yield is a bit higher than the S&P 500 average of 1.4%. However, given the uncertainty surrounding oil prices, I wouldn't expect the company to raise its dividend a whole lot higher -- and in the past, Cenovus slashed its dividend payments when oil prices were falling. But if you're bullish on the sector, this can be a great option to gain exposure to it while collecting a good dividend.

3. Southern Company

Southern is a utility company serving nine million customers across the country. For its investors, it has also been regularly increasing its dividend payments for decades. The latest increase, its 21st in a row, is no surprise for shareholders as the company says its long-term contracts allow it to generate predictable earnings numbers and enable it to consistently grow its dividend. The $0.02 hike is just as large as the one it announced last year. At $2.72 in dividends per share over the course of a full year, the stock now yields 3.7%.

The news of the hike came just before Southern announced its latest quarterly results, covering the first three months of 2022. Reported per-share earnings of $0.97 for the period were down $0.10 from a year ago. But on an adjusted basis, they remained nearly identical to the $0.98 that the company reported during the same period last year. Either way, the earnings leave plenty of room for Southern to cover its new quarterly dividend payment of $0.68 with ease.

The stability that this business offers, combined with Southern's track record of consistently raising payouts, makes it a safe bet that payouts will continue to increase for the foreseeable future. And that makes Southern a promising dividend stock for investors to buy and hold for years.

","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
3 Dividend Stocks That Recently Hiked Their Payouts
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n3 Dividend Stocks That Recently Hiked Their Payouts\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2022-05-06 11:34 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Dividend stocks that provide investors with regular, recurring payouts are incredibly valuable investments to hang on to for the long haul.
