NIO is a great stock that has seen a huge fall that makes it a better buy at present prices. Buy in small quantities and add more with every fall. But it's also a Chinese stock and the recent policies from the govt. make it somewhat of a risk. Here's hoping that this will see historic highs again. I remain invested for long on this one.

My answer is: it&#39;s part of the plan.</p><p>I have written about Palantir before in this article &#34;Palantir Is About Data And Data Is The Future &#34;. In that article, I argued that the huge amount of data both existing and massively accumulating, is to artificial intelligence like raw meat is to a lion. If AI is indeed about data then something has to feed it, just like the lion. That something is Palantir.</p><p>In this article, I will attempt to define PLTR as an operating system sitting on top of a user&#39;s various and sundry systems in order to easily access and order myriad data sources quickly and legibly.</p><p>Here are four ways PLTR resembles Microsoft (MSFT) the most famous and successful operating system developer in history.</p><p><b>1. Palantir sits on top of other systems just like Windows does.</b></p><p>What do operating systems do? They sit on top of everything else including data, software, operations, etc. They manage everything underneath them so nothing gets out of control. In my estimation, the best, most descriptive name for an operating system is one I worked on decades ago: Master Control Program {MCP} from Unisys (see here). In fact, the name is so good it has been borrowed by the hugely successful Tron game (see here).</p><p>That&#39;s what Gotham and Foundry do: they control what&#39;s beneath them, mainly huge amounts of uncorrelated data from various and sundry sources. They then use those results to feed the huge, voracious maw of AI.</p><p>Think about Windows for example.</p><p>Under Windows, you could convert a PDF file to a Word document, the Word document to text, the text file to Excel, and the Excel file into PowerPoint or SQL Server.</p><p>Multiply the complexity of the data sources and endpoints by about 1,000 times and you have what Palantir does. But still, it is about mastering control and that&#39;s what operating systems do.</p><p><b>2. Gotham and Foundry are not the end but only the beginning.</b></p><p>Many years ago I bought an IBM PC with a 5MB (yep, MB not GB or TB) hard drive for a client to run his payroll on. It was running MS-DOS and Microsoft basic.</p><p>Fast forward 30 some years later and we now have Microsoft Azure running every imaginable application for every imaginable customer on the cloud. And little old MS-DOS is now Office 365 many times connected to Windows Server.</p><p>The point here is there is much more to come from PLTR in future years other than Gotham and Foundry. I am certain those new applications are in process as we speak.</p><p>Where exactly will PLTR&#39;s systems be in 5, 10, or 20 years? I certainly don&#39;t know but I am willing to bet (by owning the stock) it will more than likely resemble Microsoft&#39;s historic path than say Oracle&#39;s.</p><p><b>Per Palantir&#39;s COO Shyam Sankar:</b></p><blockquote>Of course, trillion dollar is well short of our ambition over the next 10 years. We always have and will always continue to focus on building cutting-edge product that the world needs anticipating the future, operating with precision, building before the need is obvious,</blockquote><p>Source:Seeking Alpha</p><p>So &#34;building before the need is obvious&#34; means there is much more coming from Palantir and, in fact, some of it is already on the way. Just like Microsoft, PLTR is building for a future that is unknown on the one hand but certain in others - there will be massively more data to be analyzed and whoever does it best will be the next Microsoft.</p><p><b>3. Palantir&#39;s next 10 years could be like Microsoft&#39;s early years.</b></p><p>Since Palantir was in business for 17 years before it went public I am going to compare PLTR to MSFT beginning in 1992 about 17 years after it was founded by Bill Gates and Paul Allen. MSFT&#39;s revenue in 1992 was about $1.5 billion close to Palantir&#39;s revenue of $1.1 billion in 2020.</p><p>Just as a curiosity, let&#39;s look at MSFT&#39;s 3, 5, and 10-year future returns based upon the billion-plus revenue of 1992.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/3ad5e3e0e226264cba87e4902d1143ac\" tg-width=\"647\" tg-height=\"387\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>NASDAQ and Author</span></p><p>Note Palantir was also founded by two well-known tech investors Peter Thiel and Alex Karp. A little older than Microsoft&#39;s founders and perhaps a little wiser too.</p><p>The hair is a little different but notice each picture has one guy in a sweater and one guy in a suit. That may or may not represent a strong investment correlation.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d847b9f38da7f4f2a20ae04b3be26b07\" tg-width=\"1214\" tg-height=\"612\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/></p><p>The equivalent stock performance for PLTR from the initial listing date to now would be as shown below.</p><p>Some analysts say PLTR is vastly overvalued and looking at the chart below you can see the logic of that argument. Both software companies were up 400%, but one in four months and one in five years.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/cf096508c2197eebaafaf7833770cb05\" tg-width=\"644\" tg-height=\"383\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>NASDAQ and author</span></p><p><b>4. SBC (Stock Based Compensation) doesn&#39;t seem to have hurt Microsoft.</b></p><p>One of the arguments Palantir critics often mention is an over-reliance on SBC driving up the PLTR share count from about 900 million in the 3rd quarter of 2020 to about two billion in the 3rd quarter of 2021.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/5b22667e48e9a254fd11bd7ae4693ea1\" tg-width=\"416\" tg-height=\"251\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>Seeking Alpha</span></p><p>Of course, those numbers do not include options provided to employees that have not been cashed in yet.</p><p>But if you look at MSFT, they have generated four billionaires and at least 12,000 millionaires.</p><blockquote>The company&#39;s 1986initial public offering(IPO), and subsequent rise in its share price, created three billionaires and an estimated 12,000 millionaires among Microsoft employees.</blockquote><p>Source:Wikipedia</p><p>Add Steve Ballmer&#39;s $120 billion to the billionaire&#39;s list(see here)although he came to the party later. I am sure Steve had a ton ofSBC.</p><p>As a comparison to MSFT&#39;s 12,000 millionaires, PLTR only has about 3,000 employees.</p><p>Since MSFT currently has a market value of $2.5 trillion versus PLTR $40 billion, it would be hard to argue that SBC will hold PLTR back long-term.</p><p><b>Conclusion:</b></p><p>Artificial Intelligence without data (lots of data) is like Artificial Flowers - pretty, but borderline useless.</p><p>That&#39;s why PLTR&#39;s current data acquisition/manipulation operating systems, Foundry and Gotham, are so important to their AI efforts. Those who have the best quality data will have the best AI.</p><p>There can be little doubt that data and its related AI will be everywhere soon, from your phone to your TV to your garage door opener.</p><p>And we are not talking about just digital data either. There will be data acquisition of voice, terrain, faxes, encrypted messages, texts, photographs, physical movements, people, and things.</p><p>How about the distance, speed, and spin of every golf stroke on the PGA Tour?</p><p>And Steph Curry&#39;s individual finger grip pressure, ball rotation, and tightness of his shoestrings on every 30-foot 3-pointer he makes?</p><p>While the current estimates for the amount of data available and captured over the next 5, 10, or 20 years are high and growing, I think it is still vastly underestimated.</p><p>That&#39;s what Palantir knows and why it is an excellent long-term investment.</p><p>Buy PLTR if you have a long-term investment plan. My answer is: it's part of the plan.I have written about Palantir before in this article \"Palantir Is About Data And Data Is The Future \". In that article, I argued that the huge amount of data both existing and massively accumulating, is to artificial intelligence like raw meat is to a lion. If AI is indeed about data then something has to feed it, just like the lion. That something is Palantir.In this article, I will attempt to define PLTR as an operating system sitting on top of a user's various and sundry systems in order to easily access and order myriad data sources quickly and legibly.Here are four ways PLTR resembles Microsoft (MSFT) the most famous and successful operating system developer in history.1. Palantir sits on top of other systems just like Windows does.What do operating systems do? They sit on top of everything else including data, software, operations, etc. They manage everything underneath them so nothing gets out of control. In my estimation, the best, most descriptive name for an operating system is one I worked on decades ago: Master Control Program {MCP} from Unisys (see here). In fact, the name is so good it has been borrowed by the hugely successful Tron game (see here).That's what Gotham and Foundry do: they control what's beneath them, mainly huge amounts of uncorrelated data from various and sundry sources. They then use those results to feed the huge, voracious maw of AI.Think about Windows for example.Under Windows, you could convert a PDF file to a Word document, the Word document to text, the text file to Excel, and the Excel file into PowerPoint or SQL Server.Multiply the complexity of the data sources and endpoints by about 1,000 times and you have what Palantir does. But still, it is about mastering control and that's what operating systems do.2. Gotham and Foundry are not the end but only the beginning.Many years ago I bought an IBM PC with a 5MB (yep, MB not GB or TB) hard drive for a client to run his payroll on. It was running MS-DOS and Microsoft basic.Fast forward 30 some years later and we now have Microsoft Azure running every imaginable application for every imaginable customer on the cloud. And little old MS-DOS is now Office 365 many times connected to Windows Server.The point here is there is much more to come from PLTR in future years other than Gotham and Foundry. I am certain those new applications are in process as we speak.Where exactly will PLTR's systems be in 5, 10, or 20 years? Palantir's next 10 years could be like Microsoft's early years.Since Palantir was in business for 17 years before it went public I am going to compare PLTR to MSFT beginning in 1992 about 17 years after it was founded by Bill Gates and Paul Allen. MSFT's revenue in 1992 was about $1.5 billion close to Palantir's revenue of $1.1 billion in 2020.Just as a curiosity, let's look at MSFT's 3, 5, and 10-year future returns based upon the billion-plus revenue of 1992.NASDAQ and AuthorNote Palantir was also founded by two well-known tech investors Peter Thiel and Alex Karp. A little older than Microsoft's founders and perhaps a little wiser too.The hair is a little different but notice each picture has one guy in a sweater and one guy in a suit. That may or may not represent a strong investment correlation.The equivalent stock performance for PLTR from the initial listing date to now would be as shown below.Some analysts say PLTR is vastly overvalued and looking at the chart below you can see the logic of that argument. Both software companies were up 400%, but one in four months and one in five years.NASDAQ and author4. SBC (Stock Based Compensation) doesn't seem to have hurt Microsoft.One of the arguments Palantir critics often mention is an over-reliance on SBC driving up the PLTR share count from about 900 million in the 3rd quarter of 2020 to about two billion in the 3rd quarter of 2021.Seeking AlphaOf course, those numbers do not include options provided to employees that have not been cashed in yet.But if you look at MSFT, they have generated four billionaires and at least 12,000 millionaires.The company's 1986initial public offering(IPO), and subsequent rise in its share price, created three billionaires and an estimated 12,000 millionaires among Microsoft employees.Source:WikipediaAdd Steve Ballmer's $120 billion to the billionaire's list(see here)although he came to the party later. I am sure Steve had a ton ofSBC.As a comparison to MSFT's 12,000 millionaires, PLTR only has about 3,000 employees.Since MSFT currently has a market value of $2.5 trillion versus PLTR $40 billion, it would be hard to argue that SBC will hold PLTR back long-term.Conclusion:Artificial Intelligence without data (lots of data) is like Artificial Flowers - pretty, but borderline useless.That's why PLTR's current data acquisition/manipulation operating systems, Foundry and Gotham, are so important to their AI efforts. Those who have the best quality data will have the best AI.There can be little doubt that data and its related AI will be everywhere soon, from your phone to your TV to your garage door opener.And we are not talking about just digital data either. There will be data acquisition of voice, terrain, faxes, encrypted messages, texts, photographs, physical movements, people, and things.How about the distance, speed, and spin of every golf stroke on the PGA Tour?And Steph Curry's individual finger grip pressure, ball rotation, and tightness of his shoestrings on every 30-foot 3-pointer he makes?While the current estimates for the amount of data available and captured over the next 5, 10, or 20 years are high and growing, I think it is still vastly underestimated.That's what Palantir knows and why it is an excellent long-term investment.Buy PLTR if you have a long-term investment plan. There are other companies developing tools to build the metaverse, but none boast the credentials that Unity does.</p><p>CEO John Riccitiello said in the company&#39;s third-quarter conference call that Unity seeks to have between 60% and 80% of metaverse content built using Unity&#39;s software. Is that goal realistic? I think so.</p><p>As of the end of 2020, around 71% of the top 1,000 mobile games were created with Unity&#39;s platform. Many of these same developers are likely to hop aboard the metaverse bandwagon. I suspect most of them will stick with Unity.</p><p>The company&#39;s acquisition of Weta Digital should make Unity even more attractive to metaverse developers. Weta&#39;s technology has been used to create stunning visual effects for blockbuster movies including <i>Avatar</i> and <i>The Lord of the Rings</i> as well as popular TV series such as <i>Game of Thrones</i>. Unity plans to empower artists and creators to use these tools for building metaverse content.</p><h2>What it would take to double</h2><p>It&#39;s going to take several years to get the metaverse anywhere close to fulfilling the ambitious vision that people like Zuckerberg have. Wall Street doesn&#39;t think it will happen. The consensus price target represents an upside potential of only 19%. The upbeat note, however, couldn’t stop NIO from having a very bad day on Tuesday.</p><p>NIO stock dropped about 35% this past year, but Yu cited a number of factors that could trigger a rally. Yu rates NIO (ticker: NIO) shares Buy and has a target of $70 for the price. That implies a gain of about 120% from the current price of about $32.</p><p>NIO increased its deliveries by more than 100% in 2021, but like shares of many U.S.-listed Chinese companies, the stock fell.</p><p>Yu is focused on fundamentals rather than the potential for regulatory trouble. He listed eight catalysts he sees for the stock.</p><p>The first is that NIO will start delivering its new ET7 sedan in March. Yu expects the company to unveil its sixth model around midyear, for No. 2. Upgrades to NIO’s driver-assistance features represent a third potential boost. And another new model, the ET5, is due to be shipped later in the year, while the ET7 should arrive on German roads around the same time.</p><p>The sixth model could be shipping by year-end. That’s the sixth catalyst. Seventh on the list is battery improvements Yu expects late in the year. Finally, Yu expects the company to announce a lower-price, mass-market vehicle by year-end.</p><p>If things work out as Yu foresees, the stock could regain some lost mojo. NIO shares rose roughly 1,100% in 2020, before the 2021 decline.</p><p>The rest of Wall Street doesn’t seem to have much of a problem with his view. Almost 85% of analysts covering the company rate the shares at Buy, far more than the average Buy-rating ratio for stocks in the S&amp;P 500,at about 55%. The average price target among analysts is $60 a share, a little lower than Yu’s call, but a figure that still implies gains of almost 90% from recent levels.</p><p>NIO stock didn’t react to the report on Tuesday. Shares finished down 5.7, while  S&amp;P 500 dipped 0.1%, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.6%. That implies a gain of about 120% from the current price of about $32.NIO increased its deliveries by more than 100% in 2021, but like shares of many U.S.-listed Chinese companies, the stock fell.Yu is focused on fundamentals rather than the potential for regulatory trouble. He listed eight catalysts he sees for the stock.The first is that NIO will start delivering its new ET7 sedan in March. Yu expects the company to unveil its sixth model around midyear, for No. 2. Upgrades to NIO’s driver-assistance features represent a third potential boost. And another new model, the ET5, is due to be shipped later in the year, while the ET7 should arrive on German roads around the same time.The sixth model could be shipping by year-end. That’s the sixth catalyst. Seventh on the list is battery improvements Yu expects late in the year. Finally, Yu expects the company to announce a lower-price, mass-market vehicle by year-end.If things work out as Yu foresees, the stock could regain some lost mojo. NIO shares rose roughly 1,100% in 2020, before the 2021 decline.The rest of Wall Street doesn’t seem to have much of a problem with his view. It has since recovered somewhat, to around $400.</p><p>Then came Facebook parent Meta Platforms.After its own challenging earnings report, it lost a staggering $230 billion or so in market value in a single session. It, too, dropped back to early 2020 levels, though it “only” has fallen about 40% from its 52-week high. Unlike Netflix, it hasn’t had a bounce.</p><p>It’s theoretically possible to “catch a falling knife,” as the old Wall Street saying goes. But it’s also very likely you’ll get your fingers cut off if you plow cash into stocks that have fallen hard and fallen for good reason. On the other hand, both Netflix and Facebook stocks have fallen hard before … and ended up making investors a lot of money.</p><p>If you’re wondering whether this is another one of those lucrative buying opportunities, here’s a look at where these stocks are now – and which one is “less bad” than the other.</p><p>Just be warned that you’d be living dangerously.</p><p><b>Netflix</b></p><p>Shares in the streaming video were hammered in large part because of the slowing subscriber growth disclosed in its fourth-quarter earnings report. The company added just under 8.3 million worldwide subs, significantly fewer than the 8.5 million subscribers added in the fourth quarter of 2020. Even worse, Netflix offered a “borderline catastrophic” forecast of just 2.5 million subscriber adds for the current quarter – a huge drop from 3.98 million it added in its 2021 first quarter. Analysts had been hoping for 6.93 million adds – almost three times what Netflix is now forecasting. So it’s no surprise we saw such a violent reaction.</p><p>Now, it wasn’t all bad or all unexpected. Netflix added more subscribers than the 8.19 million that analysts had forecast. Earnings per share blew away expectations at $1.33 vs. forecasts of just 82 cents.</p><p>But for a long time, we’ve been talking about the threat of market saturation and competition taking a toll on Netflix’s growth metrics. Yet while the big multiples on future earnings and sales have come down a bit since the stock’s plunge, the numbers are still stunning. Look at that forward P/E of 36.9 and a forward price/sales of about 5.5. Larger media rival Walt Disney Co. is about 30.4 and 3.6 on both those metrics, by way of example.</p><p>What’s more, Disney has theatrical releases and theme parks and merchandising to fall back on. Netflix remains a one-trick pony: streaming.</p><p>The major levers it can pull here are adding new viewers or increasing subscription costs (which it did a month ago, ahead of earnings). Of course, higher costs make the service a harder sell, especially when there are so many alternatives.</p><p>It makes you wonder what, if anything, Netflix can do to right the ship.</p><p>To its credit, Netflix continues to release high-performing content such as “Don’t Look Up,” which has been widely praised.</p><p>But Wall Street remains skeptical of whether a few new good shows on the currently dominant streaming platform is enough. For a stock that has long been defined by constant growth, it could be a rough awakening for investors if Netflix instead has become a mature company that simply depends on what it already has.</p><p><b>Facebook</b></p><p>Meta Platforms is no picnic for investors either. It was slammed after a disastrous fourth-quarter earnings report sent shares tumbling more than 20% in a single day.</p><p>In simplest terms, daily active user metrics on the flagship Facebook network were the bad news. For starters, they increased just 5% from a year ago to 1.93 billion, short of targets for 1.95 billion. Plus they actually declined from last quarter.</p><p>Bullish investors may point to other details in the social media giant’s results that weren’t quite so miserable. It posted a modest beat on revenue, as measured by the consensus target of $33.4 billion for sales, thanks in part to exceeding expectations on revenue per user estimates. Longtime watchers of this stock will know that this long-term uptrend in revenue per user has largely been driving results; total users in the key North America and European Union markets have been flatlining for a while.</p><p>But before you take a flyer on Facebook, let’s get to the additional risks, which, frankly, don’t come from any hard numbers and thus may be harder to pin down.</p><p>The company is struggling to deal with users creating multiple Facebook accounts. That makes many wonder if its user numbers are artificially inflated and the disappointing numbers are in fact much, much worse.</p><p>On top of that, privacy concerns may be coming home to roost at long last. After the earnings announcement, there have been reports that something as simple as a change in iPhone privacy settings can wipe $10 billion off earnings this year.</p><p>Then there is now chatter that Meta is “threatening” to pulling out of the European Union with its flagship Facebook and Instagram platforms because of local internet privacy rules. Talk about an empty threat. Abandon one of your largest markets just like that because you don’t like changes in the law? That kind of talk won’t make regulators or legislators back down.</p><p>There is always a chance that some of these dark clouds part and the sun shines again for Meta in the months ahead. However, unlike Netflix and its series of more practical concerns, Meta has made a habit of making terrible headlines when it comes to privacy concerns and bad actors on its platform.</p><p>From documented 2016 election interference by Russia to the 2018 Cambridge Analytica scandal to a $5 billion fine from the FTC in 2019 over privacy violations to chronic misinformation about COVID-19 in the last year or two… this is clearly a pattern.</p><p>It is not an exaggeration to say that Meta is dealing what could be existential threats to its Facebook platform. Even employees know this, and talented engineers are reportedly demanding a “brand tax” to go work at Meta in the current environment for fear they will have a black mark on their resume.</p><p><b>So which one is ‘less bad?’</b></p><p>Netflix may not be perfect. But given the big-picture threats to Meta Platforms, I would be more inclined to grant the streaming giant the benefit of the doubt over a social-media platform that may be just one more bad headline away from obsolescence.</p><p>Both platforms are facing serious challenges to growth because of user issues. But Netflix still seems to at least be the same basic platform, albeit one that’s facing the pressures of market saturation and fierce competition.</p><p>The jury is out on whether Facebook’s current model will even survive, either from consumer backlash or regulatory intervention. During the company&#39;s fiscal year 2021, this business was the second largest in sales, only behind the iPhone segment.</p><p>Apple&#39;s services revenue came in at $68.4 billion for the year, growing 27.3% compared to the fiscal year 2020. One major perk of this unit is that it boasts juicier margins than the rest of Apple&#39;s business. In its fiscal year 2021, the company&#39;s gross margin was 41.8%. Apple&#39;s product gross margin came in at 35.3%, compared to 69.7% for its services unit.</p><p>As the tech giant continues to grow this segment, it will have an increasingly positive impact on its bottom line. And that bodes well for the company&#39;s future.</p><h2>3. Brand names matter</h2><p>Companies that survive the test of time tend to have one thing in common: a competitive advantage. Of course, that can come in many different forms, be it from high switching costs, the network effect, or intangible assets such as patents and copyrights. Apple also has a solid competitive edge, namely its brand name (an intangible asset).</p><p>Businesses with solid reputations and influential brand names continue to attract customers even when they face strong competitors with similar or exchangeable products. Apple routinely ranks near (or at) the top in lists of companies with the most valuable brand names. For instance, in <i>Forbes</i>&#39; 2020 iteration of its annual ranking, Apple came in at number 1.</p><p>At this point, the company could sell almost anything at a premium by merely branding it with its prized logo.
