Despite being one of the most exciting and promising 100% electric vehicle (&#34;EV&#34;) manufacturers worldwide, NIO&#39;s stock is down by 70% from its all-time high. NIO&#39;s stock has been battered for several reasons. Themost basic explanation is that NIO is a Chinese company and Chinese stocks are out of favor. However, with anauditing deal approaching, NIO&#39;s stock should take off again.</p><p><b>NIO 2-Year Chart</b></p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/0438bee5b114f4223ad05181211f10d1\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"676\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/></p><p>NIO(StockCharts.com )</p><p>Moreover, NIO put up arecord quarter in July, illustrating great demand for the company&#39;s vehicles. NIO should reportQ2 numbers on September 7th. Analysts&#39; (consensus) estimates are for$1.41 billion in revenuesand a GAAP loss of 20 cents, but the company can report better, in my view. Furthermore, due to the favorable market dynamics, NIO should continue surpassing consensus analysts&#39; expectations as the company advances in the coming quarters. Diminishing uncertainty, improving growth, and expanding profitability should drive NIO&#39;s share considerably higher in future years.</p><h2>Addressing The Delisting Concerns</h2><p>Many investors get a chill down their spine when mentioning a Chinese company. Many prominent Chinese stocks (including NIO) have crashed over the last two years due to delisting concerns and other uncertainties. Chinese stocks were widely held due to their ability to expand revenues rapidly, produce profits, and show substantial growth. However, due to the delisting hysteria, many market participants won&#39;t touch Chinese companies with a ten-foot pole. It&#39;s not only about delisting. Other factors like a slowdown in China, profit decreases, concerns over China&#39;s government intervention, geopolitical events, and other factors have contributed to the reduced popularity of Chinese stocks. However, these uncertainties are transitory elements, and the big problem remains the delisting concerns.</p><p>So, let&#39;s address the possibility of the delisting issue. The delisting concern applies to NIO about as much as it does to any prominent Chinese stock. Baidu (BIDU), Alibaba (BABA), Pinduoduo (PDD), and many other quality Chinese companies trade at low valuations because of the delisting risk. However, Chinese companies trade at significant discounts to their American counterparts and offer remarkable growth opportunities. Perhaps most importantly, the delisting fears are probably overblown.</p><p>Washington and Beijingare close to an agreement, allowing U.S. regulators access to audits of Chinese companies listed on American exchanges. The crucial uncertainty suppressing NIO&#39;s valuation, market cap, and stock price is the possibility of delisting due to auditing issues between the two economic superpowers. I&#39;ve long written about the unlikelihood of mass delistings due to undesirable consequences for the Chinese economy and the country&#39;s government. Moreover, worsening economic relations is not in the U.S.&#39;s interest as the two countries have an extensive financial and trading relationship. Therefore, we should continue seeing progress concerning the auditing deal, and NIO&#39;s shares should go much higher when an agreement is achieved. The stock can double on the news of an auditing agreement being reached.</p><h2>NIO&#39;s Remarkable Potential</h2><p>Another factor being underestimated is NIO&#39;s massive potential. NIO is expanding withits first plant in Europe, looking to deliver battery swapping stations and other power products to NIO customers, speeding up expansion in countries like Germany, Sweden, the Netherlands, and others. NIO is also partnering with Shell (SHEL) to build battery swapping stations globally, starting in China and Europe this year. While NIO is gaining traction and establishing its infrastructure in Europe, the company has enormous prospects in its domestic market.</p><p><b>China EV Market</b></p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/0baeea5ac92f4ba54b67494421e6b1b4\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"570\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/></p><p>China EV(daxueconsulting.com)</p><p>China is the most significant EV market in the world. It&#39;s estimated that nearly 4 million passenger EVs will be sold in China this year, approximately a 31% YoY increase. About 21.5 million passenger vehicles were sold in China last year.</p><p><b>Vehicle sales in China</b></p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/3793fa3faa0d131874c5e800c371adbb\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"395\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/></p><p>China car sales(Statista.com)</p><p>We see that EVs account for nearly 18% of total passenger vehicle sales, a substantial percentage that should continue rising in the coming years. Moreover, China accounts for a whopping32% of the globalpassenger vehicle market. The remarkable growth dynamic in the most prominent car market in the world (NIO&#39;s domestic market) should provide NIO with tremendous growth opportunities for many years as the company advances.</p><p>NIO - Record Sales<img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/918fe58a438dba29b82448a9eedd2aa3\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"308\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/></p><p>NIO sales(insideevs.com)</p><p>NIO achieved record sales in June (60% YoY), delivering nearly13,000 vehiclesto its customers in one month. Moreover, we see spectacular growth, as the company is in its fifth year of shipping high-end performance EVs. If you are worried about low sales in April and May, it&#39;s because of the coronavirus lockdowns, and should be a transitory event that&#39;s passed. More importantly, NIO followed up with another robust quarter in July, delivering more than 10,000 vehicles and illustrating 27% YoY growth. Last quarter NIO delivered 25,059 vehicles, significantly above its guidance of 23,000-25,000 cars. Through July 31st, 2022, NIO has delivered approximately 228,000 vehicles cumulatively.</p><p><b>The ET 7 - The Market Has Been Waiting</b></p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ad9e1a418cdb6a5e7f0c29049b3a869a\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"188\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/></p><p>NIO sales(cnevpost.com)</p><p>The ET 7, NIO&#39;s luxury sedan model, recently went on sale. We see rapid growth, and the ET 7 now represents a significant percentage of total vehicle sales for NIO. The ET 7 is a superb vehicle that can deliver620 miles of rangeon a single charge. The full-size sedan can go 0-60 in less than four seconds and starts at only $69,000. The ET 7 is well positioned to compete with Tesla&#39;s Model S, Lucid&#39;s Air, and other premium 100% EVs globally. While NIO&#39;s ET 7 flagship should contribute significantly to the company&#39;s sales, NIO&#39;s next ET 5 vehicle should provide an explosion in revenues. The ET 5 should bereleased later this month, is a direct competitor to Tesla&#39;s Model 3, and starts at only about $51,500.</p><h2>NIO vs. Other EV Manufacturers</h2><p>NIO&#39;s market cap is only around $32 billion, and consensus estimates illustrate that the company&#39;s revenues should be around$15.5 billion in 2023.</p><p><b>NIO Revenue Estimates</b></p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/738878af57c5dcd62f694f2bdbc79ce1\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"219\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/></p><p>NIO revenues(SeekingAlpha.com )</p><p>However, NIO often surprises higher on revenues, and the company&#39;s mass-market ET 5 vehicle starts selling soon. NIO has surpassed revenue forecasts in12 out of 15 quarters, and this trend of outperformance will likely continue as the company advances. Therefore, NIO could report towards the higher end of revenue estimates, delivering $18 billion or more next year.</p><p>So, we see NIO&#39;s stock is selling at only about 1.8-2 times forward sales estimates. In comparison, Tesla (TSLA) trades at about seven times forward sales expectations. Lucid has a market cap of about$25 billion. However, Lucid hasn&#39;t proven much sales-wise but may deliver around $2.85 billion in revenues next year. This estimate places Lucid&#39;s valuation at approximately nine times sales. Rivian is another starting EV that has not yet proved it can mass produce, but it trades at about five times projected sales estimates.</p><p>Thus, we see that NIO&#39;s valuation is significantly lower than its American counterparts. Moreover, NIO&#39;s valuation is substantially lower than companies that have not demonstrated they can mass produce effectively yet. Therefore, NIO&#39;s P/S multiple can expand considerably as the company advances. NIO has explosive momentum and remarkable potential, making it one of the top Chinese stocks to own. I expect NIO&#39;s stock price to move much higher. Therefore, I have a buy rating on the stock and a 1-year price target range of $36-54, roughly a 90-185% increase over its current stock price.</p><h2>Risks to NIO</h2><p>Despite my bullish outlook, there are various risks to my thesis. The China delisting concerns could continue. Therefore, delisting fears and other detrimental factors related to China could continue to pressure NIO&#39;s stock price. Also, the company could run into various production issues and may not reach the production capacity I envision in time. Moreover, NIO&#39;s vehicles may experience a drop-off in demand, in which case the company&#39;s share price would suffer. Diminishing uncertainty, improving growth, and expanding profitability should drive NIO's share considerably higher in future years.Addressing The Delisting ConcernsMany investors get a chill down their spine when mentioning a Chinese company. Many prominent Chinese stocks (including NIO) have crashed over the last two years due to delisting concerns and other uncertainties. Chinese stocks were widely held due to their ability to expand revenues rapidly, produce profits, and show substantial growth. However, due to the delisting hysteria, many market participants won't touch Chinese companies with a ten-foot pole. It's not only about delisting. Other factors like a slowdown in China, profit decreases, concerns over China's government intervention, geopolitical events, and other factors have contributed to the reduced popularity of Chinese stocks. However, these uncertainties are transitory elements, and the big problem remains the delisting concerns.So, let's address the possibility of the delisting issue. The delisting concern applies to NIO about as much as it does to any prominent Chinese stock. Baidu (BIDU), Alibaba (BABA), Pinduoduo (PDD), and many other quality Chinese companies trade at low valuations because of the delisting risk. However, Chinese companies trade at significant discounts to their American counterparts and offer remarkable growth opportunities. Perhaps most importantly, the delisting fears are probably overblown.Washington and Beijingare close to an agreement, allowing U.S. regulators access to audits of Chinese companies listed on American exchanges. The crucial uncertainty suppressing NIO's valuation, market cap, and stock price is the possibility of delisting due to auditing issues between the two economic superpowers. I've long written about the unlikelihood of mass delistings due to undesirable consequences for the Chinese economy and the country's government. Moreover, worsening economic relations is not in the U.S.'s interest as the two countries have an extensive financial and trading relationship. Therefore, we should continue seeing progress concerning the auditing deal, and NIO's shares should go much higher when an agreement is achieved. The stock can double on the news of an auditing agreement being reached.NIO's Remarkable PotentialAnother factor being underestimated is NIO's massive potential. NIO is expanding withits first plant in Europe, looking to deliver battery swapping stations and other power products to NIO customers, speeding up expansion in countries like Germany, Sweden, the Netherlands, and others. NIO is also partnering with Shell (SHEL) to build battery swapping stations globally, starting in China and Europe this year. While NIO is gaining traction and establishing its infrastructure in Europe, the company has enormous prospects in its domestic market.China EV MarketChina EV(daxueconsulting.com)China is the most significant EV market in the world. It's estimated that nearly 4 million passenger EVs will be sold in China this year, approximately a 31% YoY increase. About 21.5 million passenger vehicles were sold in China last year.Vehicle sales in ChinaChina car sales(Statista.com)We see that EVs account for nearly 18% of total passenger vehicle sales, a substantial percentage that should continue rising in the coming years. Moreover, China accounts for a whopping32% of the globalpassenger vehicle market. The remarkable growth dynamic in the most prominent car market in the world (NIO's domestic market) should provide NIO with tremendous growth opportunities for many years as the company advances.NIO - Record SalesNIO sales(insideevs.com)NIO achieved record sales in June (60% YoY), delivering nearly13,000 vehiclesto its customers in one month. Moreover, we see spectacular growth, as the company is in its fifth year of shipping high-end performance EVs. If you are worried about low sales in April and May, it's because of the coronavirus lockdowns, and should be a transitory event that's passed. More importantly, NIO followed up with another robust quarter in July, delivering more than 10,000 vehicles and illustrating 27% YoY growth. Last quarter NIO delivered 25,059 vehicles, significantly above its guidance of 23,000-25,000 cars. Through July 31st, 2022, NIO has delivered approximately 228,000 vehicles cumulatively.The ET 7 - The Market Has Been WaitingNIO sales(cnevpost.com)The ET 7, NIO's luxury sedan model, recently went on sale. We see rapid growth, and the ET 7 now represents a significant percentage of total vehicle sales for NIO. The ET 7 is a superb vehicle that can deliver620 miles of rangeon a single charge. The full-size sedan can go 0-60 in less than four seconds and starts at only $69,000. The ET 7 is well positioned to compete with Tesla's Model S, Lucid's Air, and other premium 100% EVs globally. While NIO's ET 7 flagship should contribute significantly to the company's sales, NIO's next ET 5 vehicle should provide an explosion in revenues. The ET 5 should bereleased later this month, is a direct competitor to Tesla's Model 3, and starts at only about $51,500.NIO vs. Other EV ManufacturersNIO's market cap is only around $32 billion, and consensus estimates illustrate that the company's revenues should be around$15.5 billion in 2023.NIO Revenue EstimatesNIO revenues(SeekingAlpha.com )However, NIO often surprises higher on revenues, and the company's mass-market ET 5 vehicle starts selling soon. NIO has surpassed revenue forecasts in12 out of 15 quarters, and this trend of outperformance will likely continue as the company advances. Therefore, NIO could report towards the higher end of revenue estimates, delivering $18 billion or more next year.So, we see NIO's stock is selling at only about 1.8-2 times forward sales estimates. In comparison, Tesla (TSLA) trades at about seven times forward sales expectations. Lucid has a market cap of about$25 billion. However, Lucid hasn't proven much sales-wise but may deliver around $2.85 billion in revenues next year. This estimate places Lucid's valuation at approximately nine times sales. Rivian is another starting EV that has not yet proved it can mass produce, but it trades at about five times projected sales estimates.Thus, we see that NIO's valuation is significantly lower than its American counterparts. Moreover, NIO's valuation is substantially lower than companies that have not demonstrated they can mass produce effectively yet. Therefore, NIO's P/S multiple can expand considerably as the company advances. electric vehicle (EV) maker Nio Inc. (NIO) is preparing for deliveries of its most awaited ES7 five-seater SUV across China as well as the shipment of the first batch of ET7 full-size electric sedan to Europe. The demand for the new EV models could help NIO stock rebound from its year-to-date slump.While the Chinese EV industry has faced production challenges owing to the COVID-19-related lockdowns and supply chain bottlenecks, Nio has managed to report strong auto delivery numbers both in the second quarter and the month of July.Notably, Nio also offers a subscription-based battery swap option for its EVs. These are eligible for subsidy under China’s current subsidy policy for the new energy vehicle industry, which expires next year. This has also helped propel the demand for Nio’s autos in China.Nio’s ES7 Ready for Delivery Across ChinaNio’s ES7 model is based on the company’s latest technology platform, called NIO Technology 2.0. The SUV is slated to start delivery across the mainland beginning August 28.On August 25, Nio began shipping the ES7 autos from its Hefei advanced manufacturing base to various locations in China. The company stated that deliveries will be allotted as per the order schedule and will depend on factors including production progress and distance to destination.Nio’s ES7 comes in three variants, which are priced at RMB 468,000, RMB 526,000, and RMB 548,000, respectively, before subsidies.Nio’s ET7 Starts Shipping to EuropeNio’s flagship ET7 sedan has gained popularity in China and is being shipped for its first delivery to Europe. This year, the ET7 will be available in Norway, Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, and Sweden. Nio hopes to witness a solid jump in vehicle deliveries in the fourth quarter this year, once the EV deliveries begin in full swing across Europe.Nio’s ET7 received permission for sale in Europe from the European Community Whole Vehicle Type Approval (EWVTA) in April 2022. This is Nio’s second model to be sold in Europe following the success of ES8 last year in Norway. Details of ET7 variants and battery packs for Europe are not available at the time.Is NIO a Buy, Sell or Hold?Analysts on the Street remain highly optimistic about Nio stock. Recently, Deutsche Bank analyst Edison Yu called Nio’s expansion efforts in overseas markets “underappreciated.” The analyst noted that the company’s expansion into European markets this year has not been fully acknowledged in its long-term growth potential.Furthermore, Yu also noted that Nio’s CEO William Li was seen visiting its U.S. headquarters recently. Due to its routine media coverage, Tesla&#39;s pros and cons are even more broadly discussed than most companies&#39;.</p><p>Tesla&#39;s long list of strengths starts with its extremely high production and delivery growth rate. 2021 deliveries of 936,172 vehicles were nearly four times higher than its full-year 2018 delivery numbers. High sales and a global footprint have helped Tesla improve its profitability. The full-year results aren&#39;t out yet, but Tesla&#39;s trailing-12-month figures for the last three years illustrate just how fast its top line and profitability are growing. For example, consider that Tesla&#39;s trailing-12-month revenue is up 80% from three years ago, its net income is up to $3.5 billion, and its operating margin is 9.5%.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/aed7c2f6fb7ad05ce5ba64265770062a\" tg-width=\"720\" tg-height=\"527\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/></p><p>TSLA Revenue (TTM) data by YCharts</p><p>We&#39;ll likely see Tesla&#39;s profitability continue to improve as it ramps up production and grows its manufacturing capacity thanks to the launch of Gigafactories in Texas and Germany this year.</p><p>Tesla&#39;s strengths are its industry-leading position in the global EV market, advanced battery and self-driving technology, first-mover advantage, expansive DC fast-charging network, strong brand equity, a diverse business that includes other energy solutions, and industry-leading operating margin. Its main weakness has nothing to do with Tesla the company, but rather, it has to do with Tesla the stock and its expensive valuation.</p><p>If recent history tells us anything, it&#39;s that the market will give fundamentally strong businesses premium valuations because it&#39;s better to buy a fantastic company for an expensive price than a decent company for a cheap price. Tesla is a fantastic company. And while its stock price could very easily go down over the short term, its long-term strengths show no signs of fading anytime soon. Buying Tesla seems like an easy choice. But so was simply buying large tech stocks like <b>Apple</b>, <b>Microsoft</b>, or <b>Alphabet </b>over the last few years -- all three of which crushed the market. Tesla may underperform a basket of EV stocks. But it also could be a simple yet effective solution that&#39;s good enough for investors looking for a small position in the EV industry.</p><h2>Taking emotion out</h2><p><b>Howard Smith (Lucid/Rivian/Nio/Ford):</b> Comparing the recent share prices of the undisputed EV king and its up-and-coming competitors is an interesting exercise. Going on three weeks into the new year, the stock movements in 2022 still tell the story for those debating spreading bets or buying into the leader:</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/2410381bc2e056615dd4eaa5cd8be8fa\" tg-width=\"720\" tg-height=\"550\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/></p><p>LCID data by YCharts</p><p>Of course, looking at results over a short period is meaningless when judging total returns. But the above chart still shows what investors should think about when deciding how to approach investing in EV manufacturers. Buying shares in the group of Lucid, Rivian, Ford, and Nio will likely result in a mix of results. In just the first month of 2022, that has ranged from a drop of almost 20% to a gain of more than 19%.</p><p>That&#39;s partly because when it comes to these companies -- and the transition to electrification that Ford has in the works -- there remain many uncertainties and risks. Tesla&#39;s path has been well documented, and though there are likely surprises still to come from CEO Elon Musk and company, its EV business is established.</p><p>Ford is just beginning to sell its Mach-E, and interest in the F-150 Lightning appears to be off the charts, so investors are betting it will be successful in the EV space. Lucid just began delivering its luxury Air sedans and has plans to grow overseas and with future new vehicle offerings, including its Gravity SUV. It expects to be selling in Europe this year and plans to begin production on the luxury electric SUV late in 2023.</p><p>Rivian just recently began trading publicly, and news that early investor and customer <b>Amazon</b> will be spreading its purchases of electric delivery vans among other producers spooked investors.</p><p>Nio is the most established EV manufacturer among this group besides Tesla. It has expansion and growth planned for 2022, but investors have already given it a relatively high valuation.</p><p>If you believe in Tesla even considering its $1 trillion valuation, that might be the EV stock for you. But if a 40% or 50% drop in shares would cause panic, investing in a group that will likely have some winners and some losers might be a better approach. Lucid, Rivian, Ford, and Nio could all be winners in the EV market. But if not, at least a mix might help take emotion out of the investments. And emotion is rarely beneficial when it comes to investing decisions.</p><h2>Investing in EV stocks in a way that fits your personal preference</h2><p>Given the pros and cons of the points discussed, the best option for most investors could be selecting EV stocks that suit your risk tolerance and weighting them accordingly in a basket of EV stocks. For many, that basket could include Tesla. For others, it may carry higher weights of riskier but potentially more rewarding companies like Lucid and Rivian. Despite the Nasdaq Composite being negative for the year, share prices of Lucid Group (NASDAQ:LCID) and Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F) have already gained over 17% each as investors cheer EV investments and accelerated production goals.Investors looking to take a slice out of the EV pie may consider going with an industry leader like Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA), or taking more of a basket approach with several EV stocks such as Lucid, Ford, Rivian Automotive (NASDAQ:RIVN), and Nio (NYSE:NIO). Here's the case for each.The obvious choice is often the best choiceDaniel Foelber (Tesla): The good thing about industry-leading companies is that their strengths and weaknesses are right in the open. Due to its routine media coverage, Tesla's pros and cons are even more broadly discussed than most companies'.Tesla's long list of strengths starts with its extremely high production and delivery growth rate. 2021 deliveries of 936,172 vehicles were nearly four times higher than its full-year 2018 delivery numbers. High sales and a global footprint have helped Tesla improve its profitability. The full-year results aren't out yet, but Tesla's trailing-12-month figures for the last three years illustrate just how fast its top line and profitability are growing. Tesla is a fantastic company. And while its stock price could very easily go down over the short term, its long-term strengths show no signs of fading anytime soon. Buying Tesla seems like an easy choice. But so was simply buying large tech stocks like Apple, Microsoft, or Alphabet over the last few years -- all three of which crushed the market. Tesla may underperform a basket of EV stocks. But it also could be a simple yet effective solution that's good enough for investors looking for a small position in the EV industry.Taking emotion outHoward Smith (Lucid/Rivian/Nio/Ford): Comparing the recent share prices of the undisputed EV king and its up-and-coming competitors is an interesting exercise. Going on three weeks into the new year, the stock movements in 2022 still tell the story for those debating spreading bets or buying into the leader:LCID data by YChartsOf course, looking at results over a short period is meaningless when judging total returns. But the above chart still shows what investors should think about when deciding how to approach investing in EV manufacturers. Buying shares in the group of Lucid, Rivian, Ford, and Nio will likely result in a mix of results. In just the first month of 2022, that has ranged from a drop of almost 20% to a gain of more than 19%.That's partly because when it comes to these companies -- and the transition to electrification that Ford has in the works -- there remain many uncertainties and risks. Tesla's path has been well documented, and though there are likely surprises still to come from CEO Elon Musk and company, its EV business is established.Ford is just beginning to sell its Mach-E, and interest in the F-150 Lightning appears to be off the charts, so investors are betting it will be successful in the EV space. Lucid just began delivering its luxury Air sedans and has plans to grow overseas and with future new vehicle offerings, including its Gravity SUV. It expects to be selling in Europe this year and plans to begin production on the luxury electric SUV late in 2023.Rivian just recently began trading publicly, and news that early investor and customer Amazon will be spreading its purchases of electric delivery vans among other producers spooked investors.Nio is the most established EV manufacturer among this group besides Tesla. Lucid, Rivian, Ford, and Nio could all be winners in the EV market. But if not, at least a mix might help take emotion out of the investments. Any unpredictability usually results in selling. And that’s what happened here. No one knows if BABA and other Chinese stocks will remain U.S.-traded stocks or if the Chinese government will enact even harsher limits on corporate growth.</p><p>BABA stock has lost 46% in the past 12 months. And it’s still a falling knife.</p><p>This stock has a F rating in my <i>Portfolio Grader</i>.</p><p>Amazon.com (AMZN)</p><p>With a nearly $1.7 trillion market cap, AMZN certainly isn’t in some kind of considerable trouble. But its powerful run during the teeth of the pandemic and the massive flight to safe growth afterwards has driven AMZN to sky-high levels.</p><p>For example, its current price-to-earnings ratio is 64x, well above the Nasdaq 100 average P/E of 40x. Much of this is a result of its powerful 2020 performance and its continued value for growth and safety.</p><p>But those kinds of valuations are no longer sustainable in a transitioning market. And this super mega-cap stock has only managed a sub-3% gain in the past 12 months. There’s no hurry to jump in here.</p><p>This stock has a D rating in my <i>Portfolio Grader</i>.</p><p>Mega-Cap Stocks to Avoid: Disney (DIS)</p><p>There are a few challenges for this iconic mega-cap stock. First, given the spread of the omicron strain — and a new one in France just discovered — its massive resorts and parks around the world won’t likely be a full capacity. And they may well get shut down again.</p><p>As for its streaming service, while the initial growth was impressive, it’s not really dominating like many expected or projected from its launch. And it has significant competitors in the space that are very focused on just streaming entertainment and not as diversified as DIS.</p><p>Most surprising is the fact that DIS stock is now trading at a current P/E of 144x. That’s what happens when the stock is bid up wildly yet the earnings aren’t reflecting that optimism. The stock actually lost 12% in the past 12 months. A reckoning awaits.</p><p>This stock has a D rating in my <i>Portfolio Grader</i>.</p><p>PayPal (PYPL)</p><p>Financial technology (aka, fintech) companies have been very hot since the lockdown. That was a watershed moment for staid legacy banks and credit unions. For generations banks saw themselves as a conservative, service-based business where they were the arbiters of consumers’ and business’ needs.</p><p>But once their branches got shut down, loan revenue and foot traffic dried up. Many financial institutions had to scramble. The go-slow approach to fintech had to be accelerated and many banks didn’t have the leadership in place to pivot effectively.</p><p>Fintechs took off. And this was a great opportunity for PYPL, a fintech pioneer. In the past three years, PYPL stock is up 122% and that’s after 26% in the past three months. But it’s the selloff that’s the issue right now. The fintech space is becoming increasingly dynamic and global and that has meant more competition for some of the leading mega-cap stocks in this sector.</p><p>This stock has a D rating in my <i>Portfolio Grader</i>.</p><p>Mega-Cap Stocks to Avoid: Visa (V)</p><p>While V has been around since 1958 and is one of first credit card companies in the world, it’s now a major player in the fintech boom. But what once looked like a dominant position in the payments sector is now viewed as a challenge to its primacy by up and comers.</p><p>V and other payments companies work as middlemen between merchants and banks. They hold the risk of payment before the bill is paid and cleared by the bank. For this risk, they take a cut from the merchant and the bank.</p><p>But those cuts are getting smaller as new competition that doesn’t have to deal with the legacy systems and overhead are entering the markets. And that’s a challenge for V right now.</p><p>V stock has been treading water for the past 12 months, after a big run in 2020. But V has shown its resilience and it’s already opening new channels in the fintech sector. It’s just not a top pick at the moment.</p><p>This stock has a D rating in my <i>Portfolio Grader</i>.</p><p>Verizon (VZ)</p><p>Back in the old days, Ma Bell ran U.S. telecommunications. Then in 1983 an antitrust lawsuit broke it up and the Baby Bells were born. What we know today as VZ used to be Baby Bell, Bell Atlantic. With dominion over the much of the East Coast, Verizon had most major cities as its customers. And when wireless arrived, VZ had plenty of cash to splash around to expand a wireless network from coast to coast.</p><p>VZ cut an impressive path as it became the leading mobile telecom carrier and had a state of the art fiber optic network that offered internet, entertainment and mobile packages as well.</p><p>But the mobile world has shifted once again. And it has been a challenge for VZ to maintain its primacy in this new world. And that has made it a less than stellar option for now. Granted its current P/E is just 10x, and it has a 4.7% dividend yield, but VZ’s direction isn’t certain.</p><p>This stock has a D rating in my <i>Portfolio Grader</i>.</p><p>Mega-Cap Stocks to Avoid: Walmart (WMT)</p><p>With a near $400 billion market cap, WMT remains one of top retailing mega-cap stocks in the world. And its ability to catch the e-commerce wave early certainly helped when the pandemic hit.</p><p>What’s more, WMT also has a lot of stores where customers can simply pick up products after ordering online. That’s a new and important trend in same-day service. Also, Walmart super stores have groceries, which keeps them open as an essential service if there’s another lockdown.</p><p>However, WMT is fully valued here, with a current P/E of 50x. Remember, this is a low margin business, not a high margin tech stock. Much of this is a result of its powerful 2020 performance and its continued value for growth and safety.But those kinds of valuations are no longer sustainable in a transitioning market. And this super mega-cap stock has only managed a sub-3% gain in the past 12 months. And it has significant competitors in the space that are very focused on just streaming entertainment and not as diversified as DIS.Most surprising is the fact that DIS stock is now trading at a current P/E of 144x. That’s what happens when the stock is bid up wildly yet the earnings aren’t reflecting that optimism. The stock actually lost 12% in the past 12 months. A reckoning awaits.This stock has a D rating in my Portfolio Grader.PayPal (PYPL)Financial technology (aka, fintech) companies have been very hot since the lockdown. That was a watershed moment for staid legacy banks and credit unions. For generations banks saw themselves as a conservative, service-based business where they were the arbiters of consumers’ and business’ needs.But once their branches got shut down, loan revenue and foot traffic dried up. Many financial institutions had to scramble. The go-slow approach to fintech had to be accelerated and many banks didn’t have the leadership in place to pivot effectively.Fintechs took off. And this was a great opportunity for PYPL, a fintech pioneer. In the past three years, PYPL stock is up 122% and that’s after 26% in the past three months. But it’s the selloff that’s the issue right now. The fintech space is becoming increasingly dynamic and global and that has meant more competition for some of the leading mega-cap stocks in this sector.This stock has a D rating in my Portfolio Grader.Mega-Cap Stocks to Avoid: Visa (V)While V has been around since 1958 and is one of first credit card companies in the world, it’s now a major player in the fintech boom. But what once looked like a dominant position in the payments sector is now viewed as a challenge to its primacy by up and comers.V and other payments companies work as middlemen between merchants and banks. They hold the risk of payment before the bill is paid and cleared by the bank. For this risk, they take a cut from the merchant and the bank.But those cuts are getting smaller as new competition that doesn’t have to deal with the legacy systems and overhead are entering the markets. And that’s a challenge for V right now.V stock has been treading water for the past 12 months, after a big run in 2020. But V has shown its resilience and it’s already opening new channels in the fintech sector. It’s just not a top pick at the moment.This stock has a D rating in my Portfolio Grader.Verizon (VZ)Back in the old days, Ma Bell ran U.S. telecommunications. Then in 1983 an antitrust lawsuit broke it up and the Baby Bells were born. What we know today as VZ used to be Baby Bell, Bell Atlantic. With dominion over the much of the East Coast, Verizon had most major cities as its customers. And when wireless arrived, VZ had plenty of cash to splash around to expand a wireless network from coast to coast.VZ cut an impressive path as it became the leading mobile telecom carrier and had a state of the art fiber optic network that offered internet, entertainment and mobile packages as well.But the mobile world has shifted once again. And it has been a challenge for VZ to maintain its primacy in this new world. And that has made it a less than stellar option for now. Granted its current P/E is just 10x, and it has a 4.7% dividend yield, but VZ’s direction isn’t certain.This stock has a D rating in my Portfolio Grader.Mega-Cap Stocks to Avoid: Walmart (WMT)With a near $400 billion market cap, WMT remains one of top retailing mega-cap stocks in the world. And its ability to catch the e-commerce wave early certainly helped when the pandemic hit.What’s more, WMT also has a lot of stores where customers can simply pick up products after ordering online. That’s a new and important trend in same-day service. Also, Walmart super stores have groceries, which keeps them open as an essential service if there’s another lockdown.However, WMT is fully valued here, with a current P/E of 50x. Remember, this is a low margin business, not a high margin tech stock. Many prominent Chinese stocks (including NIO) have crashed over the last two years due to delisting concerns and other uncertainties. Chinese stocks were widely held due to their ability to expand revenues rapidly, produce profits, and show substantial growth. However, due to the delisting hysteria, many market participants won&#39;t touch Chinese companies with a ten-foot pole. It&#39;s not only about delisting. Other factors like a slowdown in China, profit decreases, concerns over China&#39;s government intervention, geopolitical events, and other factors have contributed to the reduced popularity of Chinese stocks. However, these uncertainties are transitory elements, and the big problem remains the delisting concerns.</p><p>So, let&#39;s address the possibility of the delisting issue.
