The biggest were a $66 billion deal for DirecTV, which closed in July 2015, and the $106 billion acquisition of Time Warner, which closed in June 2018. That brought the 145-year-old phone business into new and more cyclical industries, and at one point made it the most-indebted company in the U.S.</p><p>Since the start of 2021 and under a new CEO, John Stankey, AT&amp;T has been slimming down. A spinoff of DirecTV and the company’s other pay-TV operations was announced and completed last year. Its Xandr advertising platform is being sold to Microsoft ( MSFT ). And the spinoff of WarnerMedia should close in the second quarter of this year, per management.</p><p>It will leave AT&amp;T with a telecom-only portfolio of businesses focused on 5G wireless and fiber-optic broadband. Those are high fixed-cost businesses, but also bring attractive economies of scale and recurring revenue from subscribers.</p><p>Shedding its conglomerate structure won’t make the challenges AT&amp;T faces in its telecom businesses go away, but it will allow management to focus time and resources on solving them. Competitive dynamics in both wired and wireless communications appear to be getting more intense, especially as industry subscriber growth slows following a pandemic-era boost. And AT&amp;T requires tens of billions of dollars in capital expenditures to improve its 5G and fiber networks.</p><p>AT&amp;T plans to expand its 5G C-band network to 200 million people in the U.S. by the end of 2023, and wants to reach 30 million homes and businesses with its fiber network by the end of 2025.</p><p>AT&amp;T will have more financial firepower to throw at those goals. Management expects $20 billion of annual free cash flow from the post-WarnerMedia telecom company, with 40% of that, or $8 billion, going toward its dividend. That compares with a $15 billion annual dividend commitment prior to the spinoff. The new payout will be some $1.11 per share annually, or a 6.3% yield at current prices (adjusting for the roughly $6.70 a share in Warner Bros. Discovery stock that AT&amp;T holders will receive). It matches the projections that AT&amp;T gave when announcing the transaction in May 2021.</p><p>AT&amp;T management expects to spend around $24 billion on capital investments in 2022. And the company will get an estimated $43 billion via the WarnerMedia transaction to put toward paying down debt. Management expects to get net debt to adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization—or Ebitda—down to 2.5 times by the end of 2023. That compares with about 3.2 times today.</p><p>The result should be a leaner, meaner AT&amp;T that’s better equipped to face its challenges, but investors will want to see proof after feeling burned by years of management decisions that look poor in hindsight. Next up is a virtual investor day on March 11 focused on the post-WarnerMedia telecom business, which could include new long-term targets and plans.</p><p>The closing of the transaction itself should also bring some relief. Investors interested in Warner Bros. Discovery can shift to that stock, and those who want a yield-generating telecom stock can double down on AT&amp;T. Apple has had a busy last couple of weeks that sent the stock lower—and it all started when the company revealed its newest line of products, including the iPhone 14, in early September.</p><p>Initially, reports showed that demand for the phone was strong, specifically for the more expensive Pro and Pro Max models. Then, more information about iPhone demand started to come in. An analyst from Jefferies noted that new data led him to believe that iPhone 14 demand wasn’t as strong as expected in China. Then, Bloomberg reported that Apple reversed plans to boost iPhone 14 production later this year on demand weakness, and the BofA Securities analyst downgraded the stock to Neutral from Buy. It’s still outperforming the S&amp;P 500 and other big tech stocks this year, but it’s doing its best to catch up—or down.</p><p><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/TSLA\">Tesla</a>, on the other hand, represents investors’ desire for a big bet that will pay off. The company’s Chief Executive Officer, Elon Musk, is the richest man in the world, and has been in the news a lot recently amid a legal battle over the sale of social media platform Twitter (TWTR). And the stock held up much better than Amazon, Alphabet, Microsoft, and even Apple from Aug. 17. It fell just 13% through Sept. 30, more than 6 percentage points fewer than its nearest competitor, Alphabet.</p><p>That all changed on Monday. Tesla stock slumped 8.6% after the company reported on Sunday that it delivered 343,830 cars and produced 365,923 in the third quarter, which was a jump compared with the 254,695 vehicles Tesla handed over to customers in the second quarter, but still below Wall Street estimates. Last Friday, <b>Amazon</b>(NASDAQ:<b><u>AMZN</u></b>) enacted its 20-for-1 stock split.</p><p>Currently, AMZN stock trades at just under $125 per share. That’s a much lower price from where it closed before the split. In fact, this is Amazon’slowest level in 25 years, although experts remain unworried. Each time shares of Amazon have split, they have come back stronger. Typically, stock splits are enacted to make shares of a given company more accessible for investors.</p><p><i>InvestorPlace</i>contributor Chris Tyler says buying Amazon stock is “anything but a split decision” now. But Tyler isn’t the only voice calling this a buying opportunity. One expert in particular is<i>quite bullish</i>on shares.</p><h2>AMZN Stock After the Split</h2><p>David Wagner is a portfolio manager atinvestment advisor firm Aptus Capital Advisors. Wagner is also an AMZN shareholder in Aptus exchange-traded funds (ETFs). Following the split, Wagner shared his insights in an email to<i>InvestorPlace</i>:</p><blockquote>“For arguably the first time in 20 years, Amazon has significant excess capacity, and we expect Retail margins to improve from recent lows as utilization scales. An uncertain consumer outlook adds risk, but with [e-commerce] at 15-20% penetration of Retail, y/y [e-commerce] growth trends likely bottoming, and the company seemingly cost focused from here, we see Amazon as well positioned for resumption of [e-commerce] penetration growth.”</blockquote><p>That isn’t the only positive mark Wagner sees for AMZN stock, either. “[T]his stock tends to outperform well when its harvesting instead of investing,” the analyst adds. “And right now, it’s finally harvesting.”</p><p>Wagner does note that stock splits aren’t a guaranteed magic pill to maximize returns for investors. However, he says that “splits lately have been a source of relative alpha.” The analyst and his firm continue to regard AMZN stock with favor, although Aptus would be willing to “pare back” if the share price grew to exceed $150.</p><h2>The Road Ahead for Amazon</h2><p>Stock splits don’t instantly create value for a company. However, they can certainly prove beneficial to investors.</p><p>Back in 2020, <b>Tesla</b>(NASDAQ:<b><u>TSLA</u></b>) announced a stock split,sending shares up 80%between the announcement and actual split date. That type of success has compelled Amazon and otherhigh-growth tech companies to split sharesas well.</p><p>AMZN stock may indeed reach $150 down the line. Typically, stock splits are enacted to make shares of a given company more accessible for investors.InvestorPlacecontributor Chris Tyler says buying Amazon stock is “anything but a split decision” now. But Tyler isn’t the only voice calling this a buying opportunity. One expert in particular isquite bullishon shares.AMZN Stock After the SplitDavid Wagner is a portfolio manager atinvestment advisor firm Aptus Capital Advisors. Wagner is also an AMZN shareholder in Aptus exchange-traded funds (ETFs). Following the split, Wagner shared his insights in an email toInvestorPlace:“For arguably the first time in 20 years, Amazon has significant excess capacity, and we expect Retail margins to improve from recent lows as utilization scales. An uncertain consumer outlook adds risk, but with [e-commerce] at 15-20% penetration of Retail, y/y [e-commerce] growth trends likely bottoming, and the company seemingly cost focused from here, we see Amazon as well positioned for resumption of [e-commerce] penetration growth.”That isn’t the only positive mark Wagner sees for AMZN stock, either. “[T]his stock tends to outperform well when its harvesting instead of investing,” the analyst adds. “And right now, it’s finally harvesting.”Wagner does note that stock splits aren’t a guaranteed magic pill to maximize returns for investors. But looking at the opportunity from the entertainment side, Roblox is well-positioned to be a leader. It ended November with 49 million daily active users that can access the platform from PCs with virtual reality equipment, game consoles, and mobile devices.</p><p>Roblox makes money from a virtual currency (Robux) that is used to access new experiences and buy virtual items for personal avatars. Revenue more than doubled in the third quarter, with daily active users up 31%.</p><p>Roblox is not just about games for kids, either. Music artists are hosting live virtual concerts to connect with fans and raise awareness for new albums. <b>Netflix</b> launched an experience on the platform based on the hit show<i>Stranger Things</i>. Toward the end of last year, <b>Nike</b> unveiled Nikeland, with virtual tennis and basketball courts and other activities for users to spend time with.</p><p>Brands&#39; interest in investing in new experiences on Roblox is a great sign for the stickiness of the platform. Investments by big brands are increasing its appeal and positioning Roblox to continue growing its base of users. Management&#39;s goal is to reach billions of users. Against this long runway of growth, the recent dip in the share price looks like a good buying opportunity.</p><p>2. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/FB\"><b>Meta Platforms</b></a></p><p>With 2.9 billion monthly active users on Facebook, Meta Platforms is a no-brainer metaverse stock. It&#39;s got a war chest of cash to spend on consumer products, such as Oculus virtual reality products, not to mention data centers and other necessary infrastructure to bring its metaverse ambitions to life.</p><p>Facebook has spent approximately $21 billion on data centers over the last decade to build a total of 18 in the U.S. and internationally, according to Goldman Sachs. It has plans to build as many as 70 more buildings.</p><p>Combine that with the company&#39;s move to split its financial reporting into two segments -- Family of Apps (social media) and Facebook Reality Labs (metaverse) -- and you can see how seriously CEO Mark Zuckerberg is taking this opportunity.</p><p>Meta Platforms is still putting up solid revenue and earnings growth, and thesocial media leader looks undervaluedat a forward price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 21.</p><p>3. <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/MSFT\"><b>Microsoft</b></a></p><p>Microsoft is another reasonably valued tech stock that is well positioned to benefit from the development of Web 3.0. With its growing Xbox gaming business, the company&#39;s investments in cloud infrastructure with Microsoft Azure, and the development of the HoloLens mixed-reality headset, the software giant has all the pieces in place to capitalize on this opportunity.</p><p>HoloLens has been in development for many years. It is a headset with transparent glasses that lets the user see 3D objects in real space. It&#39;s not a consumer product, but is designed for businesses using 3D design as part of the manufacturing process. Elsewhere, Microsoft has plans to turn its Teams video conferencing app into a virtual experience using virtual reality and augmented reality goggles.</p><p>Of course, gaming will be a natural extension of the metaverse. It ended November with 49 million daily active users that can access the platform from PCs with virtual reality equipment, game consoles, and mobile devices.Roblox makes money from a virtual currency (Robux) that is used to access new experiences and buy virtual items for personal avatars. Revenue more than doubled in the third quarter, with daily active users up 31%.Roblox is not just about games for kids, either. Music artists are hosting live virtual concerts to connect with fans and raise awareness for new albums. Netflix launched an experience on the platform based on the hit showStranger Things. Toward the end of last year, Nike unveiled Nikeland, with virtual tennis and basketball courts and other activities for users to spend time with.Brands' interest in investing in new experiences on Roblox is a great sign for the stickiness of the platform.
