Even as fears of a recession and the highest interest rates in nearly a generation have dogged investors, the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite have soared this year in large part due to the emergence of generative artificial intelligence.

Among the winners from the AI boom is Palantir Technologies , which is up 169% year to date. Palantir is a software company that specializes in data fusion, or data analysis. These technologies help organizations like governments and businesses parse large amounts of data to make connections they wouldn't otherwise be able to make. Palantir got its start in counterterrorism and has expanded throughout the government and into the private sector from there. Though its government segment still makes up the majority of its revenue, the commercial business is growing faster, showing that diversifying efforts are paying off.

Where Palantir stands today

Excitement over the potential for AI has helped drive Palantir stock higher this year, but that's not the only reason the software stock has nearly tripled. Palantir is committed to delivering a profit, and it has done so by controlling its costs and continuing to grow the top line.

In the third quarter, overall revenue rose 17% to $558 million with a 34% increase in customer count, showing increasing adoption for its technology, and U.S. customer count rose 37% to 181. Palantir tends to serve complex organizations and its contracts are in the multimillion-dollar range.

What was more impressive was the company's improvements on the bottom line. Operating expenses were down and its cost of revenue was flat in the quarter even as revenue was up substantially, showing the business is effectively scaling up.

Palantir also reported its fourth straight quarter of positive net income under generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), making it eligible to join the S&P 500.

Additionally, the company is stepping up its efforts in artificial intelligence with its new Artificial Intelligence Platform (AIP), which was released earlier this year. The AIP allows its customers to use the power of large language models like ChatGPT to process the datasets that Palantir helps manage. At the time of the launch, Palantir said it was seeing substantial demand for software that can help large organizations leverage the power of new generative technologies.

Management also credited the AIP for driving growth in the third quarter, saying the impact of AIP on customer operations is "nothing short of remarkable," and the number of users nearly tripled in the last quarter with nearly 300 organizations using the software. The new platform has also accelerated its sales cycle and improved its unit economics.

Is Palantir a buy?

As a business, Palantir seems to be firing on all cylinders at the moment. Revenue growth is solid. Profit margins are rapidly expanding, and its artificial intelligence platform has become a key growth driver for the company. It also raised its guidance for the full year following the third-quarter results.

However, the business performance is only one component of the buy case. The valuation also has to be reasonable. Based on adjusted earnings, the stock is trading at a price-to-earnings ratio of 69, which is expensive, especially for a company that's only growing revenue by high-teen percentages.

Still, Palantir has a strong competitive position, entrenched and sticky relationships with its customers, a new AI platform, and growing profit margins. In other words, Palantir appears to have a bright future ahead of it.

While the stock is unlikely to repeat its blowout performance in 2023, Palantir still looks like a smart long-term bet, especially if you're bullish on AI stocks.

","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Is Palantir Stock a Buy?
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nIs Palantir Stock a Buy?\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2023-12-23 16:42 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
After 19 years of losses, Palantir is now profitable on a GAAP basis. Its new AI platform is rapidly gaining customers. The stock has nearly tripled this year as the company turned profitable while AI ...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{"BK4097":"็ณป็ป่ฝฏไปถ","BK4547":"WSB็ญ้จๆฆๅฟต","BK4585":"ETF&่ก็ฅจๅฎๆๆฆๅฟต","BK4543":"AI","BK4588":"็ข่ก","BK4023":"ๅบ็จ่ฝฏไปถ","PLTR":"Palantir Technologies Inc."},"source_url":"https://www.fool.com/investing/2023/12/22/is-palantir-stock-a-buy/","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/e9f99090a1c2ed51c021029395664489","article_id":"2393641511","content_text":"After 19 years of losses, Palantir is now profitable on a GAAP basis. Its new AI platform is rapidly gaining customers. The stock has nearly tripled this year as the company turned profitable while AI stocks gained momentum.Motley Fool Issues Rare โAll Inโ Buy AlertArtificial intelligence (AI) stocks have propelled the stock market to a surprisingly strong year in 2023. Similarly, very few people remember a runner-up... So there is everything to lose if you don't win in a final... France is my on paper favourite... But sentimental wise, Lionel Messi and Argentina gets my vote for him to go down in history to be one of the greatest player of all time... Or at least on his time... Both Ronaldo and him are too old for another world cup, so it is now or never...","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":2,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9921763616","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":0,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":300,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9921407739,"gmtCreate":1671106310622,"gmtModify":1676538490992,"author":{"id":"4103600034876750","authorId":"4103600034876750","name":"GhostFury","avatar":"https://static.itradeup.com/news/9a02903dbf2e369c53a363293ce6d3c9","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4103600034876750","authorIdStr":"4103600034876750"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"<a Southeast Asia's biggest ride-hailing and food delivery firm, does not envisage having to unde","content":"

Grab, Southeast Asia's biggest ride-hailing and food delivery firm, does not envisage having to undertake mass layoffs as some rivals have done, and is selectively hiring, while reining in its financial service ambitions.

Chief operating officer Alex Hungate said that earlier in the year, Grab had been worried about a global recession and was "very careful and judicious about any hiring", and as a result, it had not got to the "desperate" point of a hiring freeze or mass layoffs.

"Around mid-year, we did some kind of specific reorganisations, but I know other companies have been doing mass layoffs, so we don't see ourselves in that category," Hungate, 56, told Reuters in his first interview since joining Singapore-based Grab Holdings Ltd in January.

The company was hiring for roles in data science, mapping technology and other specialised areas though every hire was a much bigger decision than it used to be, he said.

"You want to make sure that we're conserving capital. The hurdle for making a hire has definitely been raised." Decade-old Grab, a household name in Southeast Asia, had about 8,800 staff at the end of 2021. Like its rivals, it has benefited from a boom in food services during the Covid-19 pandemic, while ride-hailing suffered.

As economies open up, food delivery demand is softening while ride-hailing has yet to fully recover. Tech valuations have also fallen dramatically and inflation, slower growth and rising interest rates have emerged as risks.

In recent weeks, Southeast Asia's largest e-commerce firm Shopee cut jobs in various countries and shut some overseas operations after parent Sea reported widening losses and scrapped its annual e-commerce forecast.

Hungate, a veteran of the financial services, logistics and food sectors, has spearheaded a push away from low-margin business lines as Grab races to turn profitable.

Second-quarter loss narrowed to US$572 million from US$801 million a year earlier. But last month, it cut its gross merchandise volume outlook for the year, blaming a strong dollar and ebbing food delivery demand.

Last month, Grab said it was shutting dozens of so-called dark stores - distribution hubs for on-demand groceries and slowing the roll-out of its "cloud kitchen" centralised facilities for deliveries.

"The other area where we've really tightened our strategic intent is in financial services where we were growing payments, wallets and non-bank financial lending quite significantly off-platform and on our platform," said Hungate.

Grab reorganised its fintech unit this year to focus on more lucrative areas and Reuters reported on the exit of some senior executives.

Grab is now mainly focusing on selling its lending products and insurance on its platform to merchants and drivers who often repay from their income streams on the platform.

"As we make this shift, the business mix will move towards higher margins," said Hungate.

Grab-Singtel digital bank to launch savings account offering daily interest

Grabโs sales beat estimates, but falls behind GoTo in market value

Grab, which operates in 480 cities in eight countries, has more than five million registered drivers and more than two million merchants on its platform.

It caught global attention in 2018 when it acquired Uber's Southeast Asian business after a costly five-year battle.

Grab is betting on growing financial services by offering banking and other products with partner Singapore Telecommunications in key markets.

It listed on the Nasdaq in December after a record US$40 billion merger with a blank-check company.

Hungate said it was "good timing" for the company to look again at how it spends money, given the increased scrutiny of finances and the need to respond to shareholders.

"Maybe we were lucky in a sense that the discipline of being a public company came at just the right time," he said, adding that Grab's US$7.7 billion cash liquidity meant it was one of the best capitalised industry players in Southeast Asia.

Grab's shares have tumbled about 60 per cent this year to give it a market value of US$10.6 billion.

Reuters reported last month that Grab's Indonesian rival GoTo was seeking to raise about $1 billion through a convertible bond issue.

Hungate said Grab would provide details of its progress towards profitability and other metrics at its first investor day on Tuesday.

","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; The S&P 500 dipped 1.6%. The benchmark is now down more than 10% from its intraday high. The Nasdaq Composite declined 2.1%.

The Monday action followed a brutal week on Wall Street in the face of mixed company earnings and worries about rising interest rates. The S&P 500 closed last week below its 200-day moving average, a key technical level, for the first time since June 2020. The blue-chip Dow posted its worst week since October 2020. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite notched its fourth straight weekly loss, falling deeper into correction territory.

The fourth-quarter earnings season has been a mixed bag. While more than 74% of S&P 500 companies that have reported results have topped Wall Street estimates, a couple of key firms let down investors last week, including Goldman Sachs and Netflix.

โWhat had initially been a stimulus withdrawal-driven decline morphed last week to include earnings jitters,โ Adam Crisafulli, founder of Vital Knowledge, said in a note. โSo investors are now worried not just about the multiple placed on earnings, but the EPS (earnings-per-share) forecasts themselves.โ

Investors are anticipating a slew of high-stakes earnings reports from mega-cap tech companies this week, including Microsoft, Tesla and Apple. Tesla fell 4.6% and Apple lost 1.2% in the premarket ahead of the quarterly reports.

Peloton shares fell about 2% in premarket trading following news that activist investor Blackwells is calling for the interactive fitness company to fire CEO John Foley and to seek a buyer.

Another crucial market driver will be the Fedโs policy meeting, which wraps up on Wednesday. Investors are anxious to find out any signals on how much the central bank will raise interest rates this year and when it will start.

The Federal Open Market Committee, which sets interest rates, meets with expectations that it wonโt act at this meeting but will tee up the first of multiple rate hikes starting in March. In addition, the Fed is expected to wrap up its monthly asset purchase program that same month.

At his post-meeting news conference, Chairman Jerome Powell also could signal when the Fed will start to unwind its mammoth balance sheet.

Goldman Sachs said over the weekend that it sees risks rising that the Fed could enact even more than the four quarter-percentage-point hikes that the market has priced in for this year, and might start running off the nearly $9 trillion in assets it is holding in July.

Bond yields have surged in the new year in anticipation of Fed rate hikes, which partly triggered the drastic sell-off in growth-oriented tech shares.
