Tesla Alpha and Bananas Split

Is $Tesla Motors(TSLA)$ bananas (crazy) to contemplate a stock-split not even two years after the last one in Aug 2020? Let's see...Bananas to Split?Stock-split technically should have no effect on the company value. If one owned a share of TSLA, in a 5-to-1 split, one is issued four additional shares. The total number of TSLA shares outstanding increased by a factor of 5, and market re-set share price at one fifth of its previous level. The exercise left the value of one’s holdings, and market value unchanged. If there is a “pop” in share price, it's likely temporarily and short-lived, there could even be negative returns once the euphoria died down. This seems to be the conventional wisdom in US markets, with companies a

C07 – a Singapore Stock that can ‘Chiong’

While taking the same lift, my neighbour in his sixties stole a glance at me reviewing charts in Tiger App on my smartphone, and asked if I dabble in stock markets. I reply in affirmative and he invited me over to talk stocks and investment ideas over coffee. Found out he is quite an astute investor, and holds stocks that [might] huat big big! (Singlish for growth stock). But, he asked if I could recommend to him some chiong stocks (momentum stocks) in Singapore Exchange (SGX). Decided to take up his challenge; and as he said “My England not so powderful” (command of English is not very good), I strive to share–with sprinkling of Singlish in italics (and English translation in bracket)–my recommendation with the next door Uncle.I might be a tad lor sor (long-winded), so if where got t

Musk 3 : 1 Bezos World's Richest Man Match-up

I would like to explore how Elon Musk of $Tesla Motors(TSLA)$ and Jeff Bezos of $Amazon.com(AMZN)$  fame would match-up, if they go head-to-head in four areas I think are key to determine who would be the richest man in the world, come 2023. Here goes….Source: Forbes, illustration by Wesley BedrosianSo our final score in this match-up is 3-to-1 in favour of Elon Musk. Jeff Bezos is certainly a worthy competitor and a very rich man. I really like what he said which I think is applicable to investing and trading as well. “I didn't think I'd regret trying and failing…and I suspe

S'pore Airlines - a Great Way to Fly Again?

Is Singapore Airlines (SIA) a great stock to invest in again? Let us see… Fundamentally still a Great Company?I have gravitated towards Technicals (TA) as charts and patterns allow me to visualise and make sense of price action easier. Fundamentals (FA) have me rather overwhelmed by the sheer amount of information to plough through. Luckily, found an FA site (simplywall.st) recently that uses radar charts and other infographics to give quick snapshot of a company investment profile, and I found helpful to decide if I want to delve deeper (not promoting its services, just sharing something novel, at least to me). So, for SIA, their radar chart –called snowflake analysis– showed visually it has: High Future growth prospect in next 1 to 3 years, Stock price is under-Valued Financial He

Under Armour Earnings, rooting for the Underdog?

Under Armour, Inc. $Under Armour Class A(UAA)$, reports earnings before market open on Fri 6 May. The US sports footwear and apparel used to be much coveted, second only to Nike in US sales, and its stock a darling of analysts and investors. However, it has fallen out of favour on both counts, far below its heydays. Still, it is the fourth largest player in the sector globally (see below):source: alltopeverything Fundamental GameMain reasons for UAA steep decline in revenues and stock price from 2020 are: Affected by stores closure, and having to dispose excess inventory at huge discounts during pandemic, diluting brand value and putting pressure on margins Reluctance to enter the athleisure apparel segment durin

Tesla vs the Tech Giants

TSLA – One-trick Pony? TSLA is essentially an Electric Vehicle (EV) company, albeit a very good one, and market leader. It innovates to control the whole ecosystem, e.g. fully self driving (FSD) software, batteries and charging tech, onboard entertainment, etc., but it is still within the confines of the EV ecosystem. While the sector is projected to have up to 23% CAGR through to 2027, the outlook beyond is murky. What is certain is EVs will be the dominant form of vehicle sometimes in the future, and by that time, TSLA might find itself in a mature, saturated market with limited growth, just as legacy automakers the likes of Toyota, GM or Volkswagen faced today. Finding GEMs from ROIC

ROIC OnReturn on Invested Capital (ROIC) is a profitability ratio that measures the return that an investment generates for stockholders and investors. The higher the ROIC, the better the company is at turning capital into profits.Warren Buffett famously wrote in its 2007 shareholder letter that "A truly great business must have an enduring 'moat' that protects excellent returns on invested capital."Finding a company with a moat and great return on its invested capital however is tough, even for the Sage of Omaha, and ROIC purportedly is one of his favourite tool to find these gems. His iconic business partner Charlie Munger added that “…we prefer business that can write us a check (give out dividends) at the end of the year.” at 2008 Berkshire Hathaway An
