In a move that has been widely anticipated, the US central bank is raising short-term interest rates by 25 basis points. Six more hikes are expected in 2022.

I explained yesterday that the bullish reaction to the rate bump can be counterintuitive. Shouldn’t higher interest be a drag for tech and growth stocks?

The key here is that the markets do not usually react to what is happening right at this moment. Rather, it tends to look forward a few months and anticipate future events.

Dan Ives seems to agree with me that, rather than causing concern, the start of the rate hike campaign has been felt as a relief. Finally, monetary policy will begin to tighten, and investors can slowly start to worry about something other than rampant inflation.

This is very much what happened in early November of last year. When the Fed announced the start of the tapering process (that is, the winding down of the Bank’s bond purchase program), the Nasdaq immediately rallied — although enthusiasm lasted barely two months.

Therefore, yes, I believe that the macroeconomics events of the week were a positive for Apple stock. If “left alone” (i.e., absent market-level shocks and concerns), I think that AAPL share price will tend to rise due to the company’s strong fundamentals and execution.

Has AAPL bottomed?

While I think that Apple stock will be worth much more several years down the road, the harder question to answer is whether shares have seen the worst of 2022.

Any realistic analyst or investor must leave the door open for further share price weakness. I still think it is a bit too early to say, with much conviction, that the early-year selloff in the markets has completely run its course.

But here’s one thing that I can do: look at the historical data to understand what could happen next. Barron’s has done some of the work for us.

According to the publication, citing Dow Jones Market Data in an email that landed in my inbox last evening:

“The start of a Fed tightening is not necessarily bad for stocks. There have been five rate-raising cycles since 1990, and the major stock indexes endedhighera year after the first rate increase 80% of the time.”

In isolation, this figure is not particularly impressive, since the S&P 500 has produced positive returns for the year 80% of the time in the past 3 decades. But at least, the observation suggests that recent rate hikes have not been any more likely to drag the performance of the stock market.

I then looked at Apple stock itself. Keep in mind that AAPL dropped as much as 17% from its all-time high, with the YTD bottom being reached as recently as March 14.

In the iPhone era, i.e. since 2007, Apple shares dropped at least this much a few times: certainly during the Great Recession of 2008, but also in 2013-2014, 2017-2018, and during the more recent COVID-19 bear market.

Whenever a 17%-plus selloff happened, Apple managed to produce outstanding average returns of 56% one year later! While, in rare instances, share price continued to decline after the 17% drawdown, the stock was in positive territory a year later 92% of the time.

Check out the histogram below, which shows the distribution of one-year forward returns after Apple stock dipped 17% of more from a peak, since 2007:

Figure 2: AAPL: 1-year return after 17%+ selloff.

","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Apple Stock: Bright Green Light to Buy, Key Analyst Says
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nApple Stock: Bright Green Light to Buy, Key Analyst Says\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2022-03-19 09:01 GMT+8 TheStreet\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
One analyst thinks that Apple stock may have finally found its 2022 bottom. The Federal Reserve's intention to start raising interest rates in March is encouraging investors to adopt a risk-off approach. This negatively impacts high-growth stocks, but it also adversely affects digital assets.

The cryptocurrency market is clearly taking a dive. Consequently, this just might be one of the best times to buy Ethereum (CRYPTO:ETH), the world's second-most valuable cryptocurrency. Here's why.

What is Ethereum?

As the top programmable blockchain, Ethereum's network allows developers to build smart contracts on top of it. These are computer programs that self-execute if and when certain conditions are met. Ethereum's founders set out to create a decentralized, global computing platform functionality that opens up the potential for real-world use cases, as I'll discuss later. This structure is completely different than Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC), which is meant to be a peer-to-peer electronic cash system.

One of the biggest knocks on Ethereum and Bitcoin relates to their proof-of-work consensus mechanisms. This validation method requires massive amounts of computing power to solve mathematical puzzles in order to verify transactions. It's extremely energy-intensive and slow.

But Ethereum is gearing up for a major makeover to solve these problems.

Scaling Ethereum

A more environmentally friendly and faster consensus system is on the way. Previously dubbed ETH2, but now simply called the consensus layer, the plan is for Ethereum to transition to a proof-of-stake mechanism, where owners of Ether (ETH), the native token, can stake their holdings in order to earn the right to validate new blocks. Proponents view it as a necessary update to make Ethereum more scalable and sustainable.

Another critical part of the upgrade is the planned introduction of shard chains, set to be completed in 2023. Sharding will improve Ethereum's capacity significantly by adding 64 new side chains to the entire network.

Ethereum can only process something like 15 transactions per second (TPS) today, not even remotely enough to handle surging demand. For comparison's sake, Visa and Mastercard can process tens of thousands of TPS. Because of this limited scalability, whenever network congestion is high, the cost to process transactions, known as gas fees, can skyrocket. The average gas fee right now is $145. If Ethereum ever wants to achieve widespread adoption, this obviously won't cut it.

That's why the implementation of the consensus layer, and a switch to proof-of-stake, will be closely watched this year. It could be a major catalyst for Ethereum's price.

Proving that real-world use cases exist

Scaling Ethereum is extremely vital to its long-term viability, particularly at a time when decentralized applications (dApps), including decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols and non-fungible tokens (NFTs), are gaining in popularity. There are nearly 3,000 dApps, from gaming and social media to security and identity functions, running on Ethereum today.

Some interesting projects built on top of Ethereum are DeFi services like Aave and Compound. Here's why. Image source: Getty Images. Scaling Ethereum A more environmentally friendly and faster consensus system is on the way. Proving that real-world use cases exist Scaling Ethereum is extremely vital to its long-term viability, particularly at a time when decentralized applications (dApps), including decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols and non-fungible tokens (NFTs), are gaining in popularity. There are nearly 3,000 dApps, from gaming and social media to security and identity functions, running on Ethereum today. Some interesting projects built on top of Ethereum are DeFi services like Aave and Compound. These apps let users deposit their cryptocurrency balances and borrow against them, often at more favorable interest rates than what traditional banks can offer. And when it comes to NFTs, OpenSea is by far the largest platform, having just raised $300 million in funding and now valued at $13.3 billion. Ethereum's programmability can pave the way for a wide range of use cases that can upend numerous industries. And because dApps built on Ethereum's blockchain require ETH to run, the growth of these innovative projects supports demand, and a rising value, for Ethereum over time. Being able to stomach the volatility While Ethereum definitely shows promise to bring real utility from the cryptocurrency world to the mainstream, its price will continue to be volatile. Investors should brace for this inevitability. Price drawdowns in excess of 50% can and will happen, so you have to ask yourself if this is right for you. Although Ethereum has plunged 49% since Nov. 10, it's still up an incredible 23,000% over the past five years. The recent dip can be a perfect entry point for long-term investors.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":943,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9099023405,"gmtCreate":1643280937430,"gmtModify":1676533795480,"author":{"id":"4105696899481870","authorId":"4105696899481870","name":"Mushroom132","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4105696899481870","authorIdStr":"4105696899481870"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Hope that today is green!","listText":"Hope that today is green!","text":"Hope that today is green!","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9099023405","repostId":"1104463647","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1104463647","kind":"news","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Stock Market Quotes, Business News, Financial News, Trading Ideas, and Stock Research by Professionals","home_visible":0,"media_name":"Benzinga","id":"1052270027","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d08bf7808052c0ca9deb4e944cae32aa"},"pubTimestamp":1643277354,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1104463647?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2022-01-27 17:55","market":"us","language":"en","title":"7 Stocks To Watch For January 27, 2022","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1104463647","media":"Benzinga","summary":"Some of the stocks that may grab investor focus today are:Wall Street expects McDonald's Corporation","content":"

Some of the stocks that may grab investor focus today are:

Wall Street expects McDonald's Corporation to report quarterly earnings at $2.34 per share on revenue of $6.03 billion before the opening bell. Recent ups and downs have shaken up the sector and the rankings of the most valuable, and the most highly valued, EV names.

Take Wednesday. EV stocks are rising dramatically, by widely varying amounts. Tesla (ticker: TSLA) stock is up 4.3%. A nice gain, but Rivian Automotive (RIVN) stock is up 11.1%. And American depositary receipts of Chinese EV maker XPeng (XPEV) are up more than 26%.

Two big things are driving EV stocks today. First, it’s a risk-on day for the market. The S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average are up 1.7% and 1.2%, respectively.

Next, the Chinese government recently expressed a new desire to further support its domestic economy. That helped investors forget about some of their fears about the potential delistings of Chinese companies from U.S. exchanges, and focus more about improving demand in the world’s largest market for new cars and new EVs.

That factor helps Chinese EV shares the most. NIO (NIO) ADRs are up about 21%. Li Auto (LI) ADRs have gained more than 27% in Wednesday trading, roughly matching XPeng’s gains. But it’s also fair to attribute some of the Tesla gain to the Chinese news, too, as Tesla sells cars in that country.

What’s more, it’s also probably fair to attribute some of Rivian’s gain to the Chinese news. Rivian doesn’t sell cars in China, but all the EV players are linked, to some extent, by relative valuations. One EV stock going up can drive another EV stock up. The market always has an element of circular logic to it.

Through all the price changes, Tesla remains the most-valuable EV maker by a factor of almost 10. Second is BYD (1211.Hong Kong), which has a market value of about $93 billion. Those two are the only two EV makers that produce consistent profits.

The next most-valuable names, in order of descending market capitalization, are: Lucid (LCID); Polestar, which is merging with the SPAC Gores Guggenheim (GGPE); Rivian; NIO; Li Auto; and XPeng. Lucid’s market cap is about $39 billion. XPeng’s is about $23 billion.

At the beginning of 2022, Rivian was in third place, Lucid was fourth, and the Chinese EV names were all worth more than Polestar. The changing ranking can’t really be explained by EV valuation. Valuations, frankly, are all over the place.

Tesla, the bellwether, trades for about 10 times estimated sales. BYD, Lucid, Polestar, Rivian, NIO, Li, and XPeng trade for 3 times, 27 times, 11 times, 19 times, 5 times, 3 times, and 7 times, respectively. There isn’t an easy way to divine a pattern in any those multiples. Investors can’t correlate long-term-growth rates or near-term-profit expectations with the numbers.

Instead, EV stocks have been tossed on a sea of issues. China and the overall stock market are driving Wednesday trading. But EV stocks have also been impacted by rising interest rates, inflation, and parts shortages. In addition, a spike in gas prices, caused in part by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, have fueled more interest in EVs and EV stocks.

Most of the 2022 developments have been negative. The EV stocks Barron’s tracks are down about 37% year to date on average.

Another small negative impacting the sector in 2022 is changing EV incentives. EV purchase incentives fell, a little, in China beginning in 2022. And U.S. EV buyers are still waiting for President Joe Biden to pass some of his incentives from the Build Back Better infrastructure bill that didn’t make it through Congress.

There is a lot going on in the EV space. Recent ups and downs have shaken up the sector and the rankings of the most valuable, and the most highly valued, EV names.Take Wednesday. EV stocks are rising dramatically, by widely varying amounts. Tesla (ticker: TSLA) stock is up 4.3%. A nice gain, but Rivian Automotive (RIVN) stock is up 11.1%. And American depositary receipts of Chinese EV maker XPeng (XPEV) are up more than 26%.Two big things are driving EV stocks today. First, it’s a risk-on day for the market. The S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average are up 1.7% and 1.2%, respectively.Next, the Chinese government recently expressed a new desire to further support its domestic economy. That helped investors forget about some of their fears about the potential delistings of Chinese companies from U.S. exchanges, and focus more about improving demand in the world’s largest market for new cars and new EVs.That factor helps Chinese EV shares the most. The market always has an element of circular logic to it.Through all the price changes, Tesla remains the most-valuable EV maker by a factor of almost 10. Valuations, frankly, are all over the place.Tesla, the bellwether, trades for about 10 times estimated sales. BYD, Lucid, Polestar, Rivian, NIO, Li, and XPeng trade for 3 times, 27 times, 11 times, 19 times, 5 times, 3 times, and 7 times, respectively. There isn’t an easy way to divine a pattern in any those multiples. Investors can’t correlate long-term-growth rates or near-term-profit expectations with the numbers.Instead, EV stocks have been tossed on a sea of issues. The EV stocks Barron’s tracks are down about 37% year to date on average.Another small negative impacting the sector in 2022 is changing EV incentives. EV purchase incentives fell, a little, in China beginning in 2022. And U.S. EV buyers are still waiting for President Joe Biden to pass some of his incentives from the Build Back Better infrastructure bill that didn’t make it through Congress. There is a lot going on in the EV space. Investors have to digest it all and come up with what EV stocks are worth. Investors could probably use a couple of weeks of calm trading to reset their expectations about absolute and relative valuations for all the players.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":601,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9098053621,"gmtCreate":1643980792333,"gmtModify":1676533878204,"author":{"id":"4105696899481870","authorId":"4105696899481870","name":"Mushroom132","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4105696899481870","authorIdStr":"4105696899481870"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Amazon amazing","listText":"Amazon amazing","text":"Amazon amazing","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":5,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9098053621","repostId":"1147416128","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":473,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9038098506,"gmtCreate":1646695329386,"gmtModify":1676534150736,"author":{"id":"4105696899481870","authorId":"4105696899481870","name":"Mushroom132","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4105696899481870","authorIdStr":"4105696899481870"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Like","listText":"Like","text":"Like","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9038098506","repostId":"2217444700","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":855,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9091105274,"gmtCreate":1643793262626,"gmtModify":1676533856989,"author":{"id":"4105696899481870","authorId":"4105696899481870","name":"Mushroom132","avatar":"https://static.laohu8.com/default-avatar.jpg","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4105696899481870","authorIdStr":"4105696899481870"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"I think Etherium is the only blockchain to believe in.","listText":"I think Etherium is the only blockchain to believe in.","text":"I think Etherium is the only blockchain to believe in.","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9091105274","repostId":"2208330264","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2208330264","kind":"highlight","pubTimestamp":1643761417,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2208330264?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2022-02-02 08:23","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Crypto Crash: 1 Top Cryptocurrency to Buy in a Heartbeat","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2208330264","media":"Motley Fool","summary":"The promise of real-world use cases makes this an easy investing decision.","content":"

Since the start of the new year, the cryptocurrency market has lost a jaw-dropping 25% (as of Jan. 27) in 27 days.

Being able to stomach the volatility

While Ethereum definitely shows promise to bring real utility from the cryptocurrency world to the mainstream, its price will continue to be volatile. Investors should brace for this inevitability. Price drawdowns in excess of 50% can and will happen, so you have to ask yourself if this is right for you.

Although Ethereum has plunged 49% since Nov. 10, it's still up an incredible 23,000% over the past five years. On Tuesday, the software giant agreed to pay $68.7 billion, or $95 per share, in an all-cash deal to buy Activision.

However, Activision stock closed Tuesday's trading session at $82.31, which suggests market participants are placing 50/50 odds on the deal being approved by regulators. The deal is expected to close sometime in Microsoft's fiscal 2023 (which begins July 1, 2022).

Big tech hasn't gotten an easy pass from regulators in recent years, and Microsoft's bid for one of the world's top video game publishers will certainly be put under the microscope by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) and Federal Trade Commission.

I bought shares of Activision Blizzard when the stock was trading in the $60s, but deal or no deal, there are two reasons I'm not planning to cash out anytime soon.

Reason 1: It's easy money

Microsoft's buyout offer was 15% above Tuesday's closing price. Investors can earn another 15% gain by simply holding their Activision shares until the deal is finalized, which will look like a smart move if the market declines in 2022. But first, the deal has to be approved. Here's why that should happen.

The video game industry is bigger than movies and is estimated to be worth $175 billion by market researcher Newzoo. But the combined revenue of the top three U.S.-based game companies -- Activision, Electronic Arts (NASDAQ:EA), and Take-Two Interactive (NASDAQ:TTWO) -- makes up just 11% of the entire industry.

By itself, Activision's trailing-12-month revenue is only 5% of annual video game sales.

Microsoft's gaming business generated $15 billion in revenue in fiscal 2021, so with Activision's $9 billion, Microsoft would control only 14% of the industry. From that perspective, there shouldn't be competition concerns, but there's more to it.

Reason 2: The deal might not happen

One reason the deal won't receive approval is that it would fuel more industry consolidation and, in turn, give big tech the green light to make more deals and dominate a large and growing entertainment market.

Last year, Microsoft scooped up one of the largest privately-held game companies by paying $7.5 billion for ZeniMax Media, owner of Bethesda Softworks, which makes the classic Elder Scrolls franchise, among others.

Just about all the big tech companies are investing in video games in some form, but if Microsoft's deal is approved, I would keep my eye on Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOG) (NASDAQ:GOOGL), which is trying to grow the Google Stadia cloud gaming service.

Google Stadia is a direct competitor with Microsoft's Xbox Game Pass subscription service. The addition of Activision's nearly 400 million monthly active users to the Xbox ecosystem would essentially push Game Pass way out in the lead in cloud gaming, where Game Pass already has 25 million subscribers.

If Google Stadia wants to remain relevant, Alphabet might make a move to acquire another top gaming studio to shore up its exclusive game catalog and win more subscribers.

Another thing to remember is that Microsoft cited the metaverse as a reason for its interest in buying Activision. Facebook parent Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:FB) is already investing heavily in virtual reality and also plans to invest in the metaverse over the next several years. All said, if Microsoft lands Activision, Electronic Arts, and Take-Two will become prime takeover targets as tech companies race to stack up a talented roster of software programmers to build the future of gaming.

But the prospects of a few tech platforms consolidating control over an increasingly important market for consumers is a reason this deal may not happen. On Tuesday, the software giant agreed to pay $68.7 billion, or $95 per share, in an all-cash deal to buy Activision.However, Activision stock closed Tuesday's trading session at $82.31, which suggests market participants are placing 50/50 odds on the deal being approved by regulators. The deal is expected to close sometime in Microsoft's fiscal 2023 (which begins July 1, 2022).Image source: Getty Images.Big tech hasn't gotten an easy pass from regulators in recent years, and Microsoft's bid for one of the world's top video game publishers will certainly be put under the microscope by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) and Federal Trade Commission.I bought shares of Activision Blizzard when the stock was trading in the $60s, but deal or no deal, there are two reasons I'm not planning to cash out anytime soon.Reason 1: It's easy moneyMicrosoft's buyout offer was 15% above Tuesday's closing price. Investors can earn another 15% gain by simply holding their Activision shares until the deal is finalized, which will look like a smart move if the market declines in 2022. But first, the deal has to be approved. Here's why that should happen.The video game industry is bigger than movies and is estimated to be worth $175 billion by market researcher Newzoo. But the combined revenue of the top three U.S.-based game companies -- Activision, Electronic Arts (NASDAQ:EA), and Take-Two Interactive (NASDAQ:TTWO) -- makes up just 11% of the entire industry.By itself, Activision's trailing-12-month revenue is only 5% of annual video game sales.Microsoft's gaming business generated $15 billion in revenue in fiscal 2021, so with Activision's $9 billion, Microsoft would control only 14% of the industry. From that perspective, there shouldn't be competition concerns, but there's more to it.Reason 2: The deal might not happenOne reason the deal won't receive approval is that it would fuel more industry consolidation and, in turn, give big tech the green light to make more deals and dominate a large and growing entertainment market.Last year, Microsoft scooped up one of the largest privately-held game companies by paying $7.5 billion for ZeniMax Media, owner of Bethesda Softworks, which makes the classic Elder Scrolls franchise, among others.Just about all the big tech companies are investing in video games in some form, but if Microsoft's deal is approved, I would keep my eye on Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOG) (NASDAQ:GOOGL), which is trying to grow the Google Stadia cloud gaming service.Google Stadia is a direct competitor with Microsoft's Xbox Game Pass subscription service. The addition of Activision's nearly 400 million monthly active users to the Xbox ecosystem would essentially push Game Pass way out in the lead in cloud gaming, where Game Pass already has 25 million subscribers.If Google Stadia wants to remain relevant, Alphabet might make a move to acquire another top gaming studio to shore up its exclusive game catalog and win more subscribers.Another thing to remember is that Microsoft cited the metaverse as a reason for its interest in buying Activision. Facebook parent Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:FB) is already investing heavily in virtual reality and also plans to invest in the metaverse over the next several years. All said, if Microsoft lands Activision, Electronic Arts, and Take-Two will become prime takeover targets as tech companies race to stack up a talented roster of software programmers to build the future of gaming.But the prospects of a few tech platforms consolidating control over an increasingly important market for consumers is a reason this deal may not happen. The Biden administration has taken a strong stance on enforcing antitrust and competition policy at the DOJ, so it's doubtful that regulators would give the big tech giants a thumbs-up to go forth and conquer a $175 billion industry. Keep in mind, the combined cash sitting on the books at Alphabet and Meta Platforms is $195 billion, or 1.1 times the size of the gaming industry.It's a win-winIf Microsoft's acquisition attempt fails, Activision shareholders would still own a highly profitable game company that is well-positioned to ride the future growth of the industry, with top franchises under its belt, and interests in esports and consumer products to boot. Plus, Microsoft's offer validates that Activision's intrinsic value is higher than what the stock has been trading for in the last few months.Either way, investors will lock in a 15% gain over Tuesday's closing price, or the deal won't happen, and shareholders can continue holding a top video game stock that will likely be worth more than $95 a share in another five years.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":401,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0}],"lives":[]}
