In two papers uploaded to the arXiv preprint server, they say they have created a material that “opens a new era for humankind”.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/680e6a76c2fea14938f3c3aa31e47634\" tg-width=\"785\" tg-height=\"626\"/></p><p>LK-99, a lead-based compound, is purportedly a room-temperature, ambient-pressure superconductor. Such a material, which conducts electricity without any resistance under normal conditions, could have huge implications for energy generation and transmission, transport, computing and other areas of technology.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">The papers have sparked wild enthusiasm online, and several efforts to replicate the work. At the same time, there are <u>reports</u> of disputes among the Korean researchers over whether the research should have been released at all.</p><h2 id=\"id_324530056\" style=\"text-align: start;\">Why superconductors are so super</h2><p style=\"text-align: start;\">When an electric current flows through an ordinary conductor like a copper wire, the electrons bump into atoms as they jostle along. As a result, the electrons lose some energy and the wire heats up.</p><p>In a superconductor, electrons move without any resistance. Superconducting wires can transmit electricity without losing energy, and superconducting magnets are powerful enough to levitate trains and contain the fierce plasmas in fusion reactors.</p><p>However, all known superconductors require very low temperatures (typically lower than –100 ℃) or extremely high pressures (more than 100,000 times ordinary atmospheric pressure). These restrictions make superconductors expensive and impractical for many applications.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">Several teams of researchers have claimed to detect room-temperature superconductivity in various substances in the past, but none of the claims have withstood scrutiny. As recently as last week, a superconductivity paper by American physicist Ranga Dias was <u>retracted</u> amid suspicions of data fabrication.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">So while a room-temperature superconductor would be an amazing discovery, we should meet the new claims with some skepticism.</p><h2 id=\"id_3823967621\" style=\"text-align: start;\">Bold claims</h2><p style=\"text-align: start;\">The South Korean researchers say LK-99 can be made in a baking process that combines the minerals lanarkite (Pb₂SO₅) and copper phosphide (Cu₃P). They say the resulting material shows two key signs of superconductivity at normal air pressure and at temperatures up to 127 ℃: zero resistance and magnetic levitation.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">They propose a plausible theory of how LK-99 might display room-temperature superconductivity, but have not provided definite experimental evidence. The data presented in the papers appear inconclusive.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">One of the signatures of a superconductor is the Meissner effect, which causes it to levitate when placed above a magnet.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">In a video demonstration, the researchers position a piece of LK-99 over a magnet. One edge of the flat disk of LK-99 rises, but the other edge appears to maintain contact with the magnet.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">We would expect a superconductor to display full levitation and also “quantum locking” which keeps it in a fixed position relative to the magnet. In a charitable interpretation, the behaviour we see in the video may be due to imperfections in the sample, meaning only part of the sample becomes superconductive.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">So it is too early to say we have been presented with compelling evidence for room-temperature superconductivity.</p><h2 id=\"id_585138596\" style=\"text-align: start;\">What’s next</h2><p style=\"text-align: start;\">At present, all we know about LK-99 comes from the two arXiv papers, which have not been peer-reviewed. Both papers present similar measurements, though the presentation is unconventional. However, there are some differences in the content, and also in authorship, which does not inspire confidence.</p><p>So what happens now? The processes of science swing into action.</p><p>Experts will closely review the papers. This has led to reverse balances dropping due to increased usage of the reverse repo facility as investors have pushed money into higher-yielding money market accounts.</p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">This has sent the reserve balance lower recently, but those reserves could be set to drop even further, especially now that the Treasury General Account has just $85 billion on hand. The decline in the Treasury General Account has helped to provide the markets with excess liquidity. But with tax receipts set to pour in and the recent debt issuances, the Treasury General Account should rise, which should work to drain liquidity from the markets.</p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">The Treasury General Account has fallen sharply in recent weeks, as the Treasury has used extraordinary measures due to the current debt ceiling debate. This has led to reverse balances dropping due to increased usage of the reverse repo facility as investors have pushed money into higher-yielding money market accounts.This has sent the reserve balance lower recently, but those reserves could be set to drop even further, especially now that the Treasury General Account has just $85 billion on hand. The decline in the Treasury General Account has helped to provide the markets with excess liquidity. But with tax receipts set to pour in and the recent debt issuances, the Treasury General Account should rise, which should work to drain liquidity from the markets.The Treasury General Account has fallen sharply in recent weeks, as the Treasury has used extraordinary measures due to the current debt ceiling debate. But unlike the significant decline witnessed at the end of 2022, this decline would be longer lasting and could have a more profound effect on markets.Reserve balancesBloombergAgain, historically, the S&P 500 has lagged changes in reserves balances by around two weeks, and if reserved balances begin to drop, the S&P 500 could very well be on its way lower, and depending on how far those reserves fall, it could be a pretty significant drop to come. Historically when the reserve balance makes new highs, stocks make new highs. When the reserve balances make new lows, stocks make new lows. SST currently holds the retail units in Waterway Point, which is in Punggol.The acquisition will increase FCT’s interest in each of SST and FCRT (and thereby FCT’s effective interest in Waterway Point) from currently 40.0% to 50.0%.Frasers Hospitality Trust: Frasers Hospitality Trust said on Monday a proposal to take the trust private in a $1.35 billion deal had fallen through due to the failure to get enough shareholder vote in favour of the deal.Only 74.88 per cent of shareholder votes were cast in favour of the take-private resolution, compared with the 75 per cent required for the resolution to pass.The offeror, a wholly owned subsidiary of Frasers Property, had earlier this year proposed to take the trust private through a trust scheme of arrangement.Under the scheme, it would acquire all of the hospitality trust's stapled securities - other than those held by Frasers Property and its subsidiaries, and TCC Group Investments - at 70 cents each in cash, which is above book value.Memories Group: According to the bourse filing released after market close on Sept 12, Memories (2022) is offering the group’s shareholders a cash offer of 4.7 cents per share, or one new share in the capital of the offeror in lieu of cash.It is not “currently contemplated” that the shares in the offeror will be listed on any securities exchange.As at Sept 12, Yoma Strategic Investments (YSIL), a wholly-owned subsidiary of SGX-listed Yoma Strategic Holdings, which directly owns some 167.08 million shares in Memories Group, has given an irrevocable undertaking to Memories (2022).
