in defunct gold and silver miner Hycroft in exchange for $28 million.

The miner shut down mining operations last November and laid off half its staff.

Hycroft has yet to perform the necessary studies needed to launch the next stage of its operations.

Nothing says you're serious about turning around your movie theater business than investing in a defunct gold and silver miner, or so AMC Entertainment would have you believe.

The theater owner shocked everyone by announcing it had invested $27.9 million in Hycroft Mining in exchange for a 22% stake in the company. At the same time, metals investor Eric Sprott invested a similar amount into Hycroft.

CEO Adam Aron said AMC's own near-death experience has made it willing and able to help other businesses also knocking at death's door.

In recent years, however, AMC Entertainment has had enormous success and demonstrated expertise in guiding a company with otherwise valuable assets through a time of severe liquidity challenge, the raising of capital, and strengthening of balance sheets, as well as communicating with individual retail investors. It is all that experience and skill that we bring to the table to assist the talented mining professionals at Hycroft.

However, investors should be even more wary of investing in AMC than they were before.

In the pits

AMC is not healthy. Despite having established significant liquidity by using its meme stock popularity to raise cash, the movie industry has not recovered. There are fewer movies planned for release in 2022, and that will result in even lower theater attendance than was the case even before the pandemic. So taking resources away from bolstering the business is more than just surprising.

More so because Hycroft Mining is not an active miner. It ceased operations at its only mine in Nevada last November, saying it wanted to switch to building a mill to process gold and silver sulfide ore.

The problem is, Hycroft hasn't even done a feasibility study on whether the method Hycroft wants to use to process the ore will even work or is economically feasible. It says its previous plan for using a novel two-stage sulfide heap oxidation and leach process is not economical at current metal prices, so it will instead consider using an alternative process, though it's not yet proven it can be workable at a commercial scale.

AMC, however, says third-party analyses confirm Hycroft has "rock-solid assets," with 15 million ounces of gold deposits and around 600 million ounces of silver deposits at its Nevada mine.

Hoping something sticks

Investing $28 million in a defunct gold miner when you have $1.8 billion sitting in the bank is in itself not much of an issue. Even if the whole enterprise goes belly up, it's not going to severely affect the company, and if it's successful, it may make some money on the deal. So why not, right?

The problem arises from the mindset behind such an investment. The scattershot approach to trying something --anything!-- to get some kind of a return that's completely unrelated to your core competency indicates your actual business is not worth investing in.

Buying a business in which you have no knowledge or understanding of the industry, only that it looks kind of similar to the situation you found yourself in, is hardly the way to be using shareholder resources.

Aron has indicated he wants to think outside the box when it comes to reviving AMC, and not all of the options involve movies per se.

For example, Aron recently revealed six strategies he saw AMC undertaking that included developing non-fungible tokens, or NFTs, and selling popcorn in retail stores. He did say he wanted to make more acquisitions, but I suspect most people thought he meant in line with the theater chain acquisitions he previously made. At the same time, metals investor Eric Sprott invested a similar amount into Hycroft.CEO Adam Aron said AMC's own near-death experience has made it willing and able to help other businesses also knocking at death's door.In recent years, however, AMC Entertainment has had enormous success and demonstrated expertise in guiding a company with otherwise valuable assets through a time of severe liquidity challenge, the raising of capital, and strengthening of balance sheets, as well as communicating with individual retail investors. It is all that experience and skill that we bring to the table to assist the talented mining professionals at Hycroft. However, investors should be even more wary of investing in AMC than they were before.Image source: Getty Images. In the pitsAMC is not healthy. Despite having established significant liquidity by using its meme stock popularity to raise cash, the movie industry has not recovered. There are fewer movies planned for release in 2022, and that will result in even lower theater attendance than was the case even before the pandemic. So taking resources away from bolstering the business is more than just surprising.More so because Hycroft Mining is not an active miner. It ceased operations at its only mine in Nevada last November, saying it wanted to switch to building a mill to process gold and silver sulfide ore.The problem is, Hycroft hasn't even done a feasibility study on whether the method Hycroft wants to use to process the ore will even work or is economically feasible. It says its previous plan for using a novel two-stage sulfide heap oxidation and leach process is not economical at current metal prices, so it will instead consider using an alternative process, though it's not yet proven it can be workable at a commercial scale.AMC, however, says third-party analyses confirm Hycroft has \"rock-solid assets,\" with 15 million ounces of gold deposits and around 600 million ounces of silver deposits at its Nevada mine.Hoping something sticksInvesting $28 million in a defunct gold miner when you have $1.8 billion sitting in the bank is in itself not much of an issue. Even if the whole enterprise goes belly up, it's not going to severely affect the company, and if it's successful, it may make some money on the deal. So why not, right? The problem arises from the mindset behind such an investment. The scattershot approach to trying something --anything!-- to get some kind of a return that's completely unrelated to your core competency indicates your actual business is not worth investing in.Buying a business in which you have no knowledge or understanding of the industry, only that it looks kind of similar to the situation you found yourself in, is hardly the way to be using shareholder resources.Aron has indicated he wants to think outside the box when it comes to reviving AMC, and not all of the options involve movies per se.For example, Aron recently revealed six strategies he saw AMC undertaking that included developing non-fungible tokens, or NFTs, and selling popcorn in retail stores. He did say he wanted to make more acquisitions, but I suspect most people thought he meant in line with the theater chain acquisitions he previously made. Buying a gold and silver miner was probably not on anyone's bingo card.Suspicious trading activityThe investment is likely to get SEC scrutiny too. CNBC reports there was highly unusual trading occurring in the days just preceding the announcement of the investment. It says analysis of FactSet data shows the 90-day average trading volume of Hycroft stock was around 355,000 shares prior to the news, but the day before, it spiked to 58.6 million shares, bringing the 90-day average up to 10.5 million shares.Indeed, last Friday, trading surged to 340 million shares, or five times greater than Hycroft's outstanding share count, and its stock rocketed from $0.30 a share to $1.40 the day before AMC announced its investment, a better than four-fold increase in price.Fool's goldInvesting legend Peter Lynch had a word for when companies go far afield like this: \"de-worsi-fication.\"In a bid to engage in a bit of empire building, CEOs graft wildly unrelated businesses onto their operations, ones that do nothing to strengthen the primary company -- and they tend to end badly. There was a lot to make investors cautious about taking a stake in AMC Entertainment before this. The company currently offers a yield of 2.35%, well above the average S&P 500 yield of 1.37%.A strong position in a promising industry, a robust business, and an excellent dividend history make Johnson & Johnson worth parking in your portfolio for decades.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":170,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9040158791,"gmtCreate":1655624225313,"gmtModify":1676535674501,"author":{"id":"4107641677984740","authorId":"4107641677984740","name":"tina go","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/60c0446feb328818aaf8cd74f9306156","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4107641677984740","authorIdStr":"4107641677984740"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$OCEANUS GROUP LIMITED(579.SI)$buy","listText":"$OCEANUS GROUP LIMITED(579.SI)$buy","text":"$OCEANUS GROUP LIMITED(579.SI)$buy","images":[{"img":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/5343a1113bda7398a2aa370f3afd3dbd","width":"720","height":"1280"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":4,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":1,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9040158791","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":44,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9083739325,"gmtCreate":1650159841277,"gmtModify":1676534658831,"author":{"id":"4107641677984740","authorId":"4107641677984740","name":"tina go","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/60c0446feb328818aaf8cd74f9306156","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4107641677984740","authorIdStr":"4107641677984740"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$RLX Technology(RLX)$share","listText":"$RLX Technology(RLX)$share","text":"$RLX Technology(RLX)$share","images":[{"img":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/3e63686e36eafa980b6a664fd6ed285d","width":"720","height":"2344"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":1,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9083739325","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":261,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9903682210,"gmtCreate":1659018416230,"gmtModify":1676536244794,"author":{"id":"4107641677984740","authorId":"4107641677984740","name":"tina go","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/60c0446feb328818aaf8cd74f9306156","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4107641677984740","authorIdStr":"4107641677984740"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Give like","listText":"Give like","text":"Give like","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":7,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9903682210","repostId":"2254340502","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"2254340502","kind":"highlight","pubTimestamp":1659012873,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/2254340502?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2022-07-28 20:54","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Why Did Elon Musk Sell Tesla's Bitcoin?","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2254340502","media":"Motley Fool","summary":"The self-proclaimed \"Techno King\" of Tesla sold Bitcoin for reasons that actually make sense.","content":"

Back in February 2021, Elon Musk made headlines when he announced on Twitter (TWTR 1.30%) that his electric car company, Tesla (TSLA 6.17%), would buy Bitcoin (BTC 8.79%) as an alternative to cash. At the time, many viewed the purchase as one of the most significant events in Bitcoin's short history. The $1.5 billion purchase of Bitcoin caused a frenzy of buyers to pile in and drive the price of Bitcoin up nearly 20% in less than 24 hours.

Tesla and Musk are now back in the spotlight for the same Bitcoin bought over a year ago. In a quarterly earnings call, Musk disclosed that Tesla sold 75% of its Bitcoin holdings. He cited that the company faced a need for liquidity amid uncertainty in its Chinese operations due to extended COVID-19 lockdowns. With supply chain disruptions and labor shortages, the company needed cash on hand to ensure the disruption in production didn't have as large of an impact.

The announcement caused Bitcoin to dip slightly, but it regained those losses quickly after Musk further clarified his comments. He mentioned that the sale "should not be taken as some verdict on Bitcoin" and that the company would look to increase Bitcoin holdings in the future.

As one of the most prolific entrepreneurs and richest men in the world, any purchase or sale of Bitcoin draws considerable attention from the public. Even more attention is brought about when a sale occurs. However, it seems as though the decision to sell the Bitcoin was potentially the right move for the company.

The real reasons behind the sale

Although Tesla made the announcement of the sale just last week, the company actually sold roughly 31,500 Bitcoin at a price of roughly $30,000 some time back in May. The sale allowed Tesla to secure cash it badly needed and avoided the worst of the losses when Bitcoin fell below $19,000 this July. Had Tesla not sold when it did, the company would have lost about $11,000 per Bitcoin or roughly $346 million. Likely due to some good timing and a little bit of luck, the company only reported a loss of $106 million by selling at $30,000 instead of around $19,000.

Tesla is the second-largest electric car company in the world, only recently losing the title as No. 1 this July. The lockdowns caused some of its largest factories in cities like Shanghai to shut down for over a month this spring. This type of hit to production forced Tesla to find new means of cash. Without selling the Bitcoin, the most recent earnings report would have likely been one of the worst it had in quite some time. During normal production, Tesla usually sells roughly 60,000 vehicles in China per month. Despite selling a record number of cars in June, roughly 70,000 fewer cars were sold in the second quarter compared to the first quarter.

By selling its Bitcoin, Tesla was able to bolster its cash reserves and lessen the blow from lockdown-affected factories in China. Ultimately, it might have been the right move to ensure that any further impacts from the lockdowns were minimal and wouldn't damage Tesla's bottom line for Q2. It seems as though the decision was an attempt to minimize the damage that would have inevitably shown up on Tesla's earnings report. While production numbers took a hit, Tesla was able to offset this with an increased amount of cash on its balance sheets. While it's not always ideal to sell an asset for short term reasons, it seems to have worked in this case -- especially considering that after the earnings announcement, Tesla's stock was up about 10%.

","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Why Did Elon Musk Sell Tesla's Bitcoin?
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nWhy Did Elon Musk Sell Tesla's Bitcoin?\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2022-07-28 20:54 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Back in February 2021, Elon Musk made headlines when he announced on Twitter (TWTR 1.30%) that his electric car company, Tesla (TSLA 6.17%), would buy Bitcoin (BTC 8.79%) as an alternative to cash. In aggregate, we're talking about a total gain of around 3,800,000% in 57 years.

One of the key reasons the Oracle of Omaha is such a successful investor is due to his company's focus on cyclical businesses. Hackers and robots simply don't care if Wall Street has a rough day.

There are two key reasons Palo Alto makes for such an impressive growth story. To begin with, it's undergoing a business transformation that's emphasizing subscription services. Even though the company continues to sell physical firewall products, subscription services provide better long-term margins and less revenue lumpiness. Over time, a larger percentage of total sales will derive from these higher-margin channels.

Palo Alto's other major growth driver is its many bolt-on acquisitions. Even though they can occasionally get caught up in the short-term emotions that weigh down stocks, they benefit immensely from the natural expansion of the U.S. and global economy over time. This allows patient investors in large bank stocks to build their wealth steadily over time. Not surprisingly, Bank of America is Warren Buffett's second-largest holding.

What makes Bank of America such a perfect buy at the moment (and if the market continues to fall) is the upcoming shift in the Federal Reserve's monetary policy. With U.S. inflation hitting a 40-year high in January, the nation's central bank has no choice but to aggressively begin raising interest rates. No bank stock is more interest-sensitive than BofA. In its year-end report, the company noted that a 100-basis-point parallel shift in the interest rate yield curve would add an estimated $6.5 billion in net interest income. In other words, the more inflation becomes an issue, the likelier BofA is to see a big boost to its bottom line.

Also, as I've previously pointed out, Bank of America's digital push is really paying dividends. Over the past three years, it's added 5 million new digital active customers and seen the aggregate number of loan sales completed online or via app jump from 31% to 49%. It's far more cost-effective when customers transact digitally than in person or by phone. All the same, one analyst is confident that the stock will hit top gear and keep rising over the next decade.

What Happened: Tesla stock will go from a market capitalization of a little over $1 trillion currently to $10 trillion by 2030, New Street Research analyst Pierre Ferragu said in a tweet. The analyst said the Tesla growth story is slowly taking hold and the company is on track to see unprecedented scale and capture 20% of the auto market.

Ferragu, however, cautioned that his estimate is neither a forecast nor an investment recommendation, leaving it open to investors to decide for themselves.

The analyst's 2030 look ahead assumes 20 million units of vehicle sales and an average selling price of $35,000, translating to vehicle sales of $700 billion. About $1.5 billion will likely come from insurance, $35 billion-$70 billion from full-self driving software and $250 billion from energy, with real AI providing option value.

The total 2030 revenue will likely come in at $1 trillion, the analyst estimates. Applying a multiple of 8-10 times on estimated sales, the company's valuation will gallop to about $10 trillion, he added.

Where Will This Leave Tesla Stock: Tesla's outstanding share count is currently at 1.03 billion. If the share count remains unchanged, the per-share value of Tesla would be around $9,710.

Tesla detractors and skeptical investors may debate the credibility of Ferragu's model. The analyst said the Tesla growth story is slowly taking hold and the company is on track to see unprecedented scale and capture 20% of the auto market.Ferragu, however, cautioned that his estimate is neither a forecast nor an investment recommendation, leaving it open to investors to decide for themselves. Applying a multiple of 8-10 times on estimated sales, the company's valuation will gallop to about $10 trillion, he added.Where Will This Leave Tesla Stock: Tesla's outstanding share count is currently at 1.03 billion. If the share count remains unchanged, the per-share value of Tesla would be around $9,710.Tesla detractors and skeptical investors may debate the credibility of Ferragu's model. Nevertheless, the company is poised to see superlative growth over the coming years. Tesla, according to many sell-side analysts, is not able to keep pace with the surging demand for its vehicles. It may now have found a solution with the two more Gigas, in Berlin and Texas, coming online.
