In this article, we discuss these trends and then share some of our top infrastructure picks of the moment.

Infrastructure's Impressive Growth Runway

There are many reasons why infrastructure is one of the most exciting growth sectors right now. These include:

Strong economic growth in developing markets is fueling the demand for new infrastructure to support further growth.

There is an urgent need to replace the aging core developed economy infrastructure.

The 4th Industrial Revolution and energy transition are driving immense demand for massive amounts of new types of infrastructure.

The sudden fracturing of the world along geopolitical lines in the wake of the war in Ukraine and China's growing belligerence towards Taiwan, which has in turn driven strong on-shoring of supply chains as part of a \"de-globalization\" trend in the international economy.

First and foremost, with countries like China, Brazil, and many other smaller Asian and Latin American countries growing rapidly, there is an urgent need for major infrastructure construction projects to be completed in these societies. Between simply striving to provide sufficient clean drinking water and electricity for households, building out logistics infrastructure to support booming trade, and then also trying to bring these economies into the 21st century with the necessary infrastructure to support modern technologies, there is a near limitless demand for new infrastructure in the developing world.

Second, there is an urgent need to replace and upgrade aging infrastructure in developed countries, including the United States. With bridges, roads, ports, airports, and electric grids needing expansion, replacement, and general improvement, there is a strong demand for infrastructure in developed economies as well.

Data is the world's fastest growing commodity at the moment, and it is estimated that $1 trillion in investment will be required over the next five years to sufficiently upgrade global data infrastructure to meet expected demand. This \"Fourth Industrial Revolution\" is expected to create enormous investment opportunities for building out new fiber networks to upgrade existing copper networks and install crucial wireless infrastructure to support 5G, the internet of things, and artificial intelligence applications. Most of all, there will continue to be strong demand for additional data center capacity, with ~10,000 MW of incremental capacity required to meet expected demand growth.

Furthermore, the drive to decarbonize the global economy is driving a multi-trillion-dollar investment opportunity. From investing tens of billions of dollars into new solar, wind, and other green energy production facilities, constructing more carbon efficient fossil fuel infrastructure, to building out demand-side infrastructure to support decarbonization, the investment opportunities here are immense.

Last, but not least, the deglobalization of the world economy is driving sudden strong demand for new energy export facilities, improved and increased port infrastructure, and the construction of new strategic factories (such as semiconductor factories in the United States).

With all of these factors aligning simultaneously, the investment opportunity is plentiful for infrastructure, and looks to be that way for many years to come.

Now Is The Time To Buy

In addition to the powerful growth drivers impacting the sector right now, we believe that now is a great time to buy publicly traded infrastructure businesses because:

Interest rates are likely nearing their peak given the declining inflation numbers.

Infrastructure stock prices are generally suppressed given the expectation that a recession is imminent.

Demand for infrastructure investments is likely to soar in the coming years due to the need for pension funds to access reliable high yield investments and the likely persistence of negative real interest rates for the foreseeable future.

With the latest CPI update indicating that the economy was technically in deflation in December and the year-over-year CPI numbers continuing its steady descent from mid-year, it appears that interest rates are likely nearing their peak, especially with increasingly tough year-over-year comparable numbers coming up in the next few months:

Data by YCharts

This will boost the attractiveness of infrastructure assets since they are primarily viewed as income assets and are therefore compared (and priced) against interest rates. Additionally, many infrastructure businesses make use of leverage to boost returns on equity. With the cost of debt going down, that means that infrastructure returns on equity are likely to improve again.

Furthermore, with a recession widely expected to hit sometime this year or next at the very latest in combination with the elevated interest rates, stock (SPY)(QQQ)(DIA) prices in general are down and infrastructure stocks are no exception. As a result, many infrastructure businesses can be purchased on a value basis right now.

Last, but not least, between a rapidly aging population in many countries across the globe (especially in developed economies) and with real interest rates likely to remain negative for many years to come (due to the burdensome sovereign debts and deficits which require negative real interest rates to remain serviceable), infrastructure will remain an attractive investment due to its reliable cash flows that are required by retiree pension funds and the general benefit they receive from negative real interest rate conditions (where the value of the underlying asset generally appreciates in-line with inflation over time and therefore outstrips the cost of leverage used to purchase the asset).

Our Top Picks

In light of these highly favorable attributes, we are loading up our portfolio with infrastructure businesses. Some of our favorite picks of the moment include:

Brookfield Corporation (BN), Brookfield Asset Management (BAM), and Brookfield Infrastructure (BIP)(BIPC) each have a strong global presence and profit from the strong demand for new infrastructure in both developing and developed economies. Moreover, they have limited exposure to geopolitically risky regions like China, Russia, and the Middle East, so we feel comfortable investing with them. No one knows infrastructure as well as Brookfield - not even industry leader Blackstone (BX) - and their track record is nothing short of impressive:

Data by YCharts

With their stock prices down over the past year, now is a great time to climb aboard the Brookfield bandwagon for what looks sure to be another exciting decade for shareholders ahead.

There are also some great infrastructure opportunities to profit from the 4th Industrial Revolution. While Lumen Technologies (LUMN) and AT&T (T) are options for fiber, we are finding better opportunities elsewhere. Two intriguing blue chip dividend growth options are American Tower (AMT) and Digital Realty (DLR) that are still pretty heavily discounted from its highs and have very impressive long-term track records:

Data by YCharts

To profit from the energy transition, we like Atlantica Sustainable Infrastructure (AY) and Algonquin Power & Utilities (AQN). AQN in particular has had a rough couple of months culminating in a steep dividend cut that was just announced a week ago. However, it is now on much firmer footing moving forward and both AY and AQN offer investors highly compelling dividend yields and value propositions while also being in position to profit from the recently passed so-called \"Inflation Reduction\" Act.

To profit from de-globalization - particularly of the energy supply chain - we favor Energy Transfer (ET) and Enterprise Products Partners (EPD) which are poised to profit from growing energy exports from North America, offer very attractive current yields, and trade at compelling valuations despite posting strong 2022s.

Investor Takeaway

For all of the reasons mentioned in this article (and likely some that we missed), we believe that infrastructure is clearly one of the most opportunistic sectors to invest in today.

As a result, we are investing aggressively into the sector at High Yield Investor and plan to continue doing so in the coming months.

","source":"seekingalpha","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
We Are Buying Infrastructure Hand Over Fist
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nWe Are Buying Infrastructure Hand Over Fist\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2023-01-23 21:30 GMT+8 seekingalpha\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Tryaging Infrastructure (IFRA) continues to have a highly impressive growth runway ahead of it and as a result it remains one of our favorite asset classes. Furthermore, with interest rates poised to peak in the near-term and the economy slowing, we believe it is a great time to buy high quality defensive infrastructure businesses while yields are still high. In this article, we discuss these trends and then share some of our top infrastructure picks of the moment. Infrastructure's Impressive Growth Runway There are many reasons why infrastructure is one of the most exciting growth sectors right now. These include: Strong economic growth in developing markets is fueling the demand for new infrastructure to support further growth. Now Is The Time To Buy In addition to the powerful growth drivers impacting the sector right now, we believe that now is a great time to buy publicly traded infrastructure businesses because: Interest rates are likely nearing their peak given the declining inflation numbers. Infrastructure stock prices are generally suppressed given the expectation that a recession is imminent. Demand for infrastructure investments is likely to soar in the coming years due to the need for pension funds to access reliable high yield investments and the likely persistence of negative real interest rates for the foreseeable future. With the latest CPI update indicating that the economy was technically in deflation in December and the year-over-year CPI numbers continuing its steady descent from mid-year, it appears that interest rates are likely nearing their peak, especially with increasingly tough year-over-year comparable numbers coming up in the next few months: Data by YCharts This will boost the attractiveness of infrastructure assets since they are primarily viewed as income assets and are therefore compared (and priced) against interest rates. Our Top Picks In light of these highly favorable attributes, we are loading up our portfolio with infrastructure businesses. Some of our favorite picks of the moment include: Brookfield Corporation (BN), Brookfield Asset Management (BAM), and Brookfield Infrastructure (BIP)(BIPC) each have a strong global presence and profit from the strong demand for new infrastructure in both developing and developed economies. Moreover, they have limited exposure to geopolitically risky regions like China, Russia, and the Middle East, so we feel comfortable investing with them. No one knows infrastructure as well as Brookfield - not even industry leader Blackstone (BX) - and their track record is nothing short of impressive: Data by YCharts With their stock prices down over the past year, now is a great time to climb aboard the Brookfield bandwagon for what looks sure to be another exciting decade for shareholders ahead. There are also some great infrastructure opportunities to profit from the 4th Industrial Revolution. While Lumen Technologies (LUMN) and AT&T (T) are options for fiber, we are finding better opportunities elsewhere. Two intriguing blue chip dividend growth options are American Tower (AMT) and Digital Realty (DLR) that are still pretty heavily discounted from its highs and have very impressive long-term track records: Data by YCharts To profit from the energy transition, we like Atlantica Sustainable Infrastructure (AY) and Algonquin Power & Utilities (AQN). Investor Takeaway For all of the reasons mentioned in this article (and likely some that we missed), we believe that infrastructure is clearly one of the most opportunistic sectors to invest in today. As a result, we are investing aggressively into the sector at High Yield Investor and plan to continue doing so in the coming months.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":415,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9079597585,"gmtCreate":1657213188447,"gmtModify":1676535970764,"author":{"id":"4107771346009420","authorId":"4107771346009420","name":"Bubaba","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/ff34939098dfb328ca537cafcaea8e1a","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":1,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4107771346009420","authorIdStr":"4107771346009420"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"<a With inflation still stubbornly high and the Federal Reserve poised to continue raising rates, investors have shunned stocks in nearly every sector.

But here's the thing: While it feels like the market will never rebound, history tells us that it certainly will. And when it does, you'll be glad you were holding shares of great companies.

That's why you should consider putting some money toward Tesla and Airbnb. That's because the company is consistently growing in several key areas.

First, consider that the company's nights and experiences bookings surpassed pre-pandemic levels in the most recent quarter, reaching 102 million. Not only is that proof of a travel rebound, but it also marks the first time that Airbnb surpassed 100 million nights and experiences booked in a quarter.

Second, revenue is growing at a rapid pace. Sales reached $1.5 billion in the first quarter, an impressive 80% increase from the first quarter of 2019. That revenue growth further proves that when coronavirus restrictions were removed across the globe and vaccines became widely available. Travelers were quick to use Airbnb to book trips.

And finally, while Airbnb isn't profitable right now, the company's bottom line is improving. Before the pandemic, the company's net loss in the first quarter was $292 million, but two years later, Airbnb lost just $19 million.

With the company proving that it has already rebounded from the Covid-induced travel slump, investors may want to give this beaten-down stock strong consideration for their portfolio.

2. Tesla

Tesla is just coming off a fantastic quarter where the company reported strong sales and vehicle deliveries, despite factory shutdowns, rising inflation, and material shortages.

Tesla's first-quarter vehicle production spiked 69% from the year-ago quarter to 305,407 vehicles, and vehicle deliveries increased 68% to 310,048.

That growth is already impressive on its own, but it looks even better when you consider that Tesla had to manage a factory shutdown in Shanghai because of China's strict zero-Covid policies. Tesla was able to help offset the factory hiccups because it brought its Berlin factory online in March and opened its Texas factory in April.

Tesla's strong vehicle deliveries in the quarter translated into a staggering 87% increase in automotive revenue in the quarter to $16.9 billion. Part of the jump came from higher selling prices for its vehicles, which shows that even with price increases, the company's vehicles are still in high demand.

And finally, Tesla's operating margin was an impressive 19.2% in the first quarter, up from just 5.7% in the year-ago quarter and higher than the 14.7% operating margin in the fourth quarter.

For investors trying to find a company that successfully taps into the growing EV market, Tesla's latest quarter proves that the company knows how to manage production, increase sales, and boost operating margins all at the same time. are top execs seeing that others are missing?
\n
If you've been following the news, you are likely familiar with the headlines: Tesla (TSLA), Coinbase (COIN), and Meta Platforms (FB) are just some of the companies that have announced layoffs or hiring freezes in recent weeks.
\n
And these stories come as Jamie Dimon — the JPMorgan (JPM) boss who occupies a spot not far behind Warren Buffett as the \"business leader most people listen to\" — said this week that a \"hurricane\" is headed for the US economy.
\n
\n\n
\n JP Morgan CEO Jamie Dimon speaks at the Boston College Chief Executives Club luncheon in Boston, Massachusetts, U.S., November 23, 2021. REUTERS/Brian Snyder\n
\n
\n Brian Snyder / reuters\n
\n
\n
But while some big name companies are announcing changes in hiring plans and others lower their guidance, that doesn't necessarily mean each of these stories adds up to one clean, overarching narrative. At the same time, it's hard to see these events not telling us something larger about the state of the global economy.
\n
And it's not as if these warnings come amid markets floating innocently by, as each of the major U.S. indexes is down more than 9% so far this year.
\n
A breakdown of each story, however, might lead us towards a more complicated — though maybe fuller — version of the truth.
\n
Dimon changes the temperature
\n
Speaking at an industry conference on Tuesday, Dimon said: \"Right now, it's kind of sunny, things are doing fine. Everyone thinks the Fed can handle this.”
\n
He continued: “That hurricane is right out there down the road, coming our way. We just don't know if it's a minor one or Superstorm Sandy...or Andrew or something like that. And you got to brace yourself.\"
\n
As the CEO of the largest bank in the country, we should also consider what a \"hurricane\" likely looks like to Dimon: a slowdown in lending and a rise in defaults. And with the Federal Reserve raising interest rates — and thereby tightening financial conditions — to slow inflation, the root of Dimon's concern is plain to see.
\n
Musk's multiple memos
\n
In the world of Elon Musk, of course, there is always more than just one thing going on.
\n
The world's richest man is currently in the middle of his purchase of Twitter (TWTR), which no doubt is taking plenty of his time and attention.
\n
But Musk's email to Tesla staff on Thursday that suggested 10% of salaried workers are on the chopping block follows an earlier statement that Tesla's staff needed to get back to the office.
\n
\"Everyone at Tesla is required to spend a minimum of 40 hours in the office per week,\" Musk wrote in an email, according to Reuters. \"If you don't show up, we will assume you have resigned.\"
\n
The pressure is clearly on at Tesla.
\n
Grouping Tesla with \"tech,\" however, also somewhat mis-categorizes an electric carmaker that is a manufacturing company with a global footprint. The cars they build happen to be loaded with technology, and the valuation investors assign to the stock looks more like Netflix (NFLX) than it does Ford (F).
\n
The world that Elon Musk is dealing with, then, is one where China — Tesla's second-largest and fastest-growing market — is just reopening from harsh COVID-related lockdowns. Musk also sees multi-decade highs in inflation hitting not only US consumers but those in Europe as well. All this while rivals like Ford and GM (GM) announce continued investments in ambitions to electrify their fleets. Amid these pressures, Tesla shares have fallen over 30% since early April.
\n
No wonder Musk has a \"super bad feeling.\"
\n
Coinbase cautions
\n
That brings us to Coinbase, a story that is straightforward when we look at a chart of the company's stock this year — shares are down 70%.
\n

\n
The pressures facing Coinbase are two-fold.
\n
The crypto industry at-large now agrees we've entered the latest crypto winter, and that the company is feeling pressure amid this event should not come as news to investors: Coinbase warned the market about these cycles in its S-1 filed last year.
\n
Second, the crypto slide comes as investors have broadly cooled on companies that went public in 2021.
\n
With interest rates rising — and just ask Buffett what this means for valuations — investors have broadly judged that valuations awarded in public debuts last year were inflated. Investors are choosing to discount stocks first and ask questions about the business later.
\n
On the first issue, the fix for crypto winter is time. Or as Coinbase wrote in its S-1 last year: \"We believe that we are in the early stages in the development of the cryptoeconomy. While we have grown rapidly, our growth has not been linear. Instead, it has come in waves aligned with crypto asset price cycles which tend to be volatile and draw new customers, investment, and developers into the ecosystem, and typically lead to higher Trading Volume and Monthly Transacting Users, or MTUs, on our platform.\"
\n
On the second issue, Coinbase is learning a lesson all companies learn after they go public: Success has many masters.
\n
Public market investors are often quick to reward companies for raising their forecasts by a few percentage points — and just as quick to punish expectations lowered by the same magnitude. From the outside, these changes can appear whimsical, nonsensical, or worst of all, irrational.
\n
In exchange for liquidity, public companies subject their business to daily judgment from the market. And sometimes these judgments are harsh. And sometimes these harsh judgments can last for years. Though sometimes, these judgments send shares \"to the moon.\" All is fair game in modern markets.
\n
\n\n
\n In this photo illustration, a WallStreetBets logo seen displayed on a smartphone. (Photo Illustration by Igor Golovniov/SOPA Images/LightRocket via Getty Images)\n
\n
\n SOPA Images via Getty Images\n
\n
\n
As Coinbase's chief people officer L.J. Brock wrote this week while announcing the company's decision to rescind already-accepted job offers: \"This is not a decision we make lightly, but is necessary to ensure we are only growing in the highest-priority areas.\"
\n
And the market's message to Coinbase right now is that it does not believe the company's highest-priority areas are adequately growing right now.
\n
The future, out of focus
\n
In a few hundred words, then, we see how multi-faceted the challenges facing executives are right now. To preserve our collective sanity, we'll refrain from going through these issues in detail for a few thousand more.
\n
We can see why it might be hard for investors or executives to accept data like we got on Friday that suggests the labor market — and in turn the US economy — is as strong as we've seen in years. And understand why folks would bristle when economists call these corporate proclamations a \"misleading\" read on the recovery.
\n
Moreover, the world according to a few companies is still not the world according to all — or even many.
\n
But what these CEOs see today is a world in flux, with developed markets battling inflation for the first time in decades, a land war in Europe stressing global energy markets, and a pandemic that continues to snarl supply chains.
\n
There's an old cliché that markets hate uncertainty, but really it is executives that dislike shaky forecasts.
\n
So what CEOs see today is ultimately the same thing CEOs see at all points in time: the fullest picture of the world offered by their business. And the pictures are getting blurry.
\n
The details of these outlooks always differs. The current moment is no different. But the out-of-focus picture that the business climate is spitting back looks similar to execs across industries today.
\n
To which we offer a business-centric version, perhaps, of Tolstoy's famous line: \"Every economic expansion is alike, but every economic slowdown is foreboding in its own way.\"
\n
—
\n
This article was featured in a Saturday edition of the Morning Brief on June 4, 2022. Amid these pressures, Tesla shares have fallen over 30% since early April. \nNo wonder Musk has a \"super bad feeling.\"\nCoinbase cautions\nThat brings us to Coinbase, a story that is straightforward when we look at a chart of the company's stock this year — shares are down 70%. \n\nThe pressures facing Coinbase are two-fold. \nThe crypto industry at-large now agrees we've entered the latest crypto winter, and that the company is feeling pressure amid this event should not come as news to investors: Coinbase warned the market about these cycles in its S-1 filed last year. \nSecond, the crypto slide comes as investors have broadly cooled on companies that went public in 2021. \nWith interest rates rising — and just ask Buffett what this means for valuations — investors have broadly judged that valuations awarded in public debuts last year were inflated. Investors are choosing to discount stocks first and ask questions about the business later. \nOn the first issue, the fix for crypto winter is time. Or as Coinbase wrote in its S-1 last year: \"We believe that we are in the early stages in the development of the cryptoeconomy. While we have grown rapidly, our growth has not been linear. Instead, it has come in waves aligned with crypto asset price cycles which tend to be volatile and draw new customers, investment, and developers into the ecosystem, and typically lead to higher Trading Volume and Monthly Transacting Users, or MTUs, on our platform.\" \nOn the second issue, Coinbase is learning a lesson all companies learn after they go public: Success has many masters. \nPublic market investors are often quick to reward companies for raising their forecasts by a few percentage points — and just as quick to punish expectations lowered by the same magnitude. From the outside, these changes can appear whimsical, nonsensical, or worst of all, irrational. \nIn exchange for liquidity, public companies subject their business to daily judgment from the market. And sometimes these judgments are harsh. And sometimes these harsh judgments can last for years. Though sometimes, these judgments send shares \"to the moon.\" All is fair game in modern markets. \n\n\n\n In this photo illustration, a WallStreetBets logo seen displayed on a smartphone. (Photo Illustration by Igor Golovniov/SOPA Images/LightRocket via Getty Images)\n \n\n SOPA Images via Getty Images\n \n\nAs Coinbase's chief people officer L.J. Brock wrote this week while announcing the company's decision to rescind already-accepted job offers: \"This is not a decision we make lightly, but is necessary to ensure we are only growing in the highest-priority areas.\" \nAnd the market's message to Coinbase right now is that it does not believe the company's highest-priority areas are adequately growing right now. \nThe future, out of focus\nIn a few hundred words, then, we see how multi-faceted the challenges facing executives are right now. To preserve our collective sanity, we'll refrain from going through these issues in detail for a few thousand more.\nWe can see why it might be hard for investors or executives to accept data like we got on Friday that suggests the labor market — and in turn the US economy — is as strong as we've seen in years. And understand why folks would bristle when economists call these corporate proclamations a \"misleading\" read on the recovery. \nMoreover, the world according to a few companies is still not the world according to all — or even many. \nBut what these CEOs see today is a world in flux, with developed markets battling inflation for the first time in decades, a land war in Europe stressing global energy markets, and a pandemic that continues to snarl supply chains. \nThere's an old cliché that markets hate uncertainty, but really it is executives that dislike shaky forecasts. \nSo what CEOs see today is ultimately the same thing CEOs see at all points in time: the fullest picture of the world offered by their business. And the pictures are getting blurry.\nThe details of these outlooks always differs. The current moment is no different. But the out-of-focus picture that the business climate is spitting back looks similar to execs across industries today. \nTo which we offer a business-centric version, perhaps, of Tolstoy's famous line: \"Every economic expansion is alike, but every economic slowdown is foreboding in its own way.\" \n—\nThis article was featured in a Saturday edition of the Morning Brief on June 4, 2022.
