That cheery prospect emerges from an analysis of the U.S. stock market's reaction to past banking panics. Though stocks not surprisingly declined in the immediate wake of those past crises, they almost always recovered quickly. On average a year later, the market was well above where it stood before the crisis erupted. To conduct this analysis, I focused on banking panics in the U.S. since 1870, according to a database compiled by Matthew Baron of Cornell University, Emil Verner of MIT, and Wei Ziong of Princeton. On average, the stock market's post-panic low was hit within two months of the panic's onset. Furthermore, in an average of just five months the S&P 500's total real return index was higher than where it was prior to the panic's onset. At the panics' one-year anniversary, the index was 8.0% higher, on average. If the stock market follows a similar script in the wake of the current banking crisis, the S&P 500 will hit a low sometime this April or May and then rally strongly -- eclipsing its early-March level by the end of the summer and, by March 2024, sitting on a double-digit gain in nominal terms over where it stood recently. (This nominal gain reflects the average one-year post panic return of 8% real, plus inflation; see accompanying chart.)These averages gloss over considerable variation from panic to panic. The longest recovery time for any panic since 1870 was for the one that occurred most recently, in September 2008. It took the S&P 500 six months to finally hit its low, and more than an additional year for the S&P 500 to be higher than where it stood prior to the panic's onset. You shouldn't be particularly surprised by the overall averages. The \"plunge followed by quick recovery\" pattern is the stock market's typical reaction to geopolitical and economic crises, not just bank panics -- as I've written before.Probably the worst thing you can do, from an investment point of view, is to sell into a panic. Odds are good that, by doing that, you'll get highly unfavorable outcomes.Unless you were lucky enough to get out of stocks before the SVB- $(SIVB)$ and Credit Suisse (CSGN.EB)-triggered panic, the best course of action is to hold on for the anticipated recovery.

Unfortunately, not all 30 stocks participated in the modest move higher. A few stocks actually dropped more than 10% in the first three months of the year.

Let's take a closer look at the three worst-performing stocks in the Dow Jones Industrials through the end of March (in reverse order of performance) to see if any of them are worth buying.

3. Honeywell (down 11.8%)

Honeywell, like other industrial companies, has struggled on both sides of the income statement, facing weakening demand and rising costs due to inflation.

As a result, the stock has drifted lower over the course of the first quarter, missing out on the broader recovery in the stock market.

Other than its fourth-quarter earnings report, the main news out on the company so far this year is that current president and chief operating officer Vimal Kapur will succeed Darius Adamczyk on June 1.

Honeywell's top-line growth in the fourth quarter was solid with organic sales, which exclude currency exchange, up 10%, and reported revenue rose 6% to $9.19 billion, slightly below the consensus at $9.25 billion.

On the bottom line, Honeywell's adjusted earnings per share (EPS) improved, up from $2.09 to $2.52, but that was in line with analyst estimates.

Honeywell expects just modest growth in 2023 calling for 2% to 5% organic sales growth to $36 billion to $37 billion, and adjusted EPS growth of flat to 5%, reaching $8.80 to $9.20.

Based on that forecast, the stock trades at a price-to-earnings ratio of 21, and it could be vulnerable to a recession as it sells big-ticket times like smart building management systems and aircraft engines.

Given that, investors may be able to find better value elsewhere.

2. Johnson & Johnson (down 13.1%)

It's hard to find a safer stock than Johnson & Johnson. The company operates in healthcare, a mostly recession-proof industry, and it's diversified across three business segments: consumer goods (like Tylenol), medical devices, and pharmaceuticals, though it will spin off its consumer goods division.

The healthcare giant is also only one of two U.S. companies, along with Microsoft, to enjoy a AAA credit rating from S&P Global Ratings, and it's a Dividend King, having raised its quarterly payout every year for more than 50 years.

However, those qualities haven't protected J&J this year as the stock is down 13% through the first quarter, and like Honeywell, the stock steadily declined over most of the quarter.

The healthcare conglomerate received some bad news on the legal front as an appeals court rejected the company's attempt to move roughly 40,000 lawsuits over its talc-based baby powder causing cancer to a bankruptcy court. That will likely raise the end cost to J&J, which some analysts have estimated to come to $10 billion.

The company also discontinued its RSV adult vaccine, a disappointment for investors.

In its January earnings report, the company called for modest EPS growth in 2023 at 3% to 5%, indicating 2023 could be a challenging year for the stock.

1. 3M (down 14.3%)

Like Johnson & Johnson, 3M has struggled this year in part because of legal troubles.

The company is embroiled in multiple liability lawsuits including over faulty earplugs and "forever chemicals," or PFAS, as the company recently said it would stop making PFAS.

In fact, the recent ruling in the Johnson & Johnson case has negative implications for 3M's own litigation around its earplugs.

3M's earnings report was also a disappointment as the company called for 2023 earnings per share of $8.50 to $9, below the $9.88 it reported in 2022, and short of the Wall Street consensus at $10.22. It also expects revenue to fall 2% to 6% this year.

The weakness was due in part to macroeconomic challenges as the company is cutting 2,500 jobs, exiting Russia, facing challenges in China, and dealing with the litigation mentioned above.

Given that reality, the stock seems better off avoided for now.

","source":"fool_stock","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; Unfortunately, not all 30 stocks participated in the modest move higher. A few stocks actually dropped more than 10% in the first three months of the year. Let's take a closer look at the three worst-performing stocks in the Dow Jones Industrials through the end of March (in reverse order of performance) to see if any of them are worth buying.Image source: Getty Images.3. Honeywell (down 11.8%)Honeywell, like other industrial companies, has struggled on both sides of the income statement, facing weakening demand and rising costs due to inflation. As a result, the stock has drifted lower over the course of the first quarter, missing out on the broader recovery in the stock market.Other than its fourth-quarter earnings report, the main news out on the company so far this year is that current president and chief operating officer Vimal Kapur will succeed Darius Adamczyk on June 1.Honeywell's top-line growth in the fourth quarter was solid with organic sales, which exclude currency exchange, up 10%, and reported revenue rose 6% to $9.19 billion, slightly below the consensus at $9.25 billion. On the bottom line, Honeywell's adjusted earnings per share (EPS) improved, up from $2.09 to $2.52, but that was in line with analyst estimates.Honeywell expects just modest growth in 2023 calling for 2% to 5% organic sales growth to $36 billion to $37 billion, and adjusted EPS growth of flat to 5%, reaching $8.80 to $9.20.Based on that forecast, the stock trades at a price-to-earnings ratio of 21, and it could be vulnerable to a recession as it sells big-ticket times like smart building management systems and aircraft engines.Given that, investors may be able to find better value elsewhere.2. Johnson & Johnson (down 13.1%)It's hard to find a safer stock than Johnson & Johnson. In its January earnings report, the company called for modest EPS growth in 2023 at 3% to 5%, indicating 2023 could be a challenging year for the stock.1. 3M (down 14.3%)Like Johnson & Johnson, 3M has struggled this year in part because of legal troubles. The company is embroiled in multiple liability lawsuits including over faulty earplugs and \"forever chemicals,\" or PFAS, as the company recently said it would stop making PFAS. In fact, the recent ruling in the Johnson & Johnson case has negative implications for 3M's own litigation around its earplugs.3M's earnings report was also a disappointment as the company called for 2023 earnings per share of $8.50 to $9, below the $9.88 it reported in 2022, and short of the Wall Street consensus at $10.22. It also expects revenue to fall 2% to 6% this year. The weakness was due in part to macroeconomic challenges as the company is cutting 2,500 jobs, exiting Russia, facing challenges in China, and dealing with the litigation mentioned above.Given that reality, the stock seems better off avoided for now.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":436,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9941104352,"gmtCreate":1680014546476,"gmtModify":1680014550302,"author":{"id":"4108628974181100","authorId":"4108628974181100","name":"Rainbow99","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/128a74dd78c37d882e1d697e16d1e430","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4108628974181100","authorIdStr":"4108628974181100"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Interesting ","listText":"Interesting ","text":"Interesting","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":4,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9941104352","repostId":"2322570372","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":209,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9943950250,"gmtCreate":1679060092070,"gmtModify":1679060264740,"author":{"id":"4108628974181100","authorId":"4108628974181100","name":"Rainbow99","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/128a74dd78c37d882e1d697e16d1e430","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4108628974181100","authorIdStr":"4108628974181100"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"😮","listText":"😮","text":"😮","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":3,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9943950250","repostId":"1148194616","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1148194616","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Providing stock market headlines, business news, financials and earnings ","home_visible":1,"media_name":"Tiger Newspress","id":"1079075236","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8274c5b9d4c2852bfb1c4d6ce16c68ba"},"pubTimestamp":1679059861,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1148194616?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2023-03-17 21:31","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Dow Falls Friday as Concern over the State of the U.S. Banking Sector Lingers","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1148194616","media":"Tiger Newspress","summary":"TheDow Jones Industrial Averagefell Friday as investors contemplated the future ofFirst Republicand ","content":"

TheDow Jones Industrial Averagefell Friday as investors contemplated the future ofFirst Republicand other banks.

Dow futures dipped 232 points, or 0.7%. We urge people to be a little bit cautious, particularly until we hear what the Fed has to say.”Traders will watch out for the preliminary reading of the consumer sentiment index from the University of Michigan, as well as industrial and manufacturing production to get a better grasp on the economy ahead of the Fed’s meeting next week.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":482,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9948858139,"gmtCreate":1680679927221,"gmtModify":1680679931345,"author":{"id":"4108628974181100","authorId":"4108628974181100","name":"Rainbow99","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/128a74dd78c37d882e1d697e16d1e430","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4108628974181100","authorIdStr":"4108628974181100"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Noted with thanks","listText":"Noted with thanks","text":"Noted with thanks","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9948858139","repostId":"2324872695","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":452,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9949268458,"gmtCreate":1678695812374,"gmtModify":1678696160306,"author":{"id":"4108628974181100","authorId":"4108628974181100","name":"Rainbow99","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/128a74dd78c37d882e1d697e16d1e430","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4108628974181100","authorIdStr":"4108628974181100"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Oops hope no more banks follow these 2 banks","listText":"Oops hope no more banks follow these 2 banks","text":"Oops hope no more banks follow these 2 banks","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9949268458","repostId":"1186439140","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":457,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":282426737942776,"gmtCreate":1709980449568,"gmtModify":1709980453245,"author":{"id":"4108628974181100","authorId":"4108628974181100","name":"Rainbow99","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/128a74dd78c37d882e1d697e16d1e430","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4108628974181100","authorIdStr":"4108628974181100"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Diversifying is way to go for my investments 🌈","listText":"Diversifying is way to go for my investments 🌈","text":"Diversifying is way to go for my investments 🌈","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/282426737942776","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":319,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9941346262,"gmtCreate":1680007159957,"gmtModify":1680007163484,"author":{"id":"4108628974181100","authorId":"4108628974181100","name":"Rainbow99","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/128a74dd78c37d882e1d697e16d1e430","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4108628974181100","authorIdStr":"4108628974181100"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Interesting!","listText":"Interesting!","text":"Interesting!","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9941346262","repostId":"1130705713","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":396,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9943964040,"gmtCreate":1679051200081,"gmtModify":1679051304075,"author":{"id":"4108628974181100","authorId":"4108628974181100","name":"Rainbow99","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/128a74dd78c37d882e1d697e16d1e430","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4108628974181100","authorIdStr":"4108628974181100"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Despite volatile week, its 👍 stocks gained 0.9%. The rebound also meant the STI was up 0.2 percent from last Friday’s close.Across the broader market, gainers outnumbered losers 307 to 233, after 2.3 billion securities worth S$1.9 billion were traded.CapitaLand Investment was the top STI gainer, rising 2.6 percent to close at S$3.56.Meanwhile, Emperador slipped 1.9 percent to S$0.51, ending at the bottom of the index performance table.The trio of local banks logged a mixed performance. DBS shares closed unchanged at S$32.55, but UOB and OCBC were gainers, rising 1.9 percent and 0.9 percent respectively.For the week, Sats was the top index gainer, rising 7 percent over the five trading days. Meanwhile, Yangzijiang Shipbuilding was the worst STI performer this week, after its shares fell 6.9 percent.Elsewhere in the region, most markets closed higher on Friday tracking overnight gains on Wall Street, where major US indices were in risk-on mode.IG market analyst Yeap Jun Rong noted that easing concerns over a wider meltdown was at play, with gold prices also stagnating following a surge in the past week.“But the absence of a wider bearish move (in gold) suggests that the risk environment is still treading on some cautious optimism while dovish rate expectations also remain supportive of the yellow metal,” he added.The Shanghai Composite Index and South Korea’s Kospi both rose 0.7 percent on Friday. Japan’s Nikkei 225 was up 1.2 percent, while the Hang Seng Index ended the day 1.6 percent higher.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":213,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0}],"lives":[]}
