This blog previewed the earnings report on Seeking Alpha here.</p><p>If readers quickly peruse the earnings preview, it was noted that Walmart was suffering from “retail constipation” as inventory growth had far exceeded sales growth and for a company that runs like a Swiss watch, this was a rare occurrence indeed.</p><p>However, as the following spreadsheet shows, Walmart has vastly improved its revenue growth vs. inventory growth, although it&#39;s still not yet in line with historical standards:</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/e625a90dff771b0d7e944e64afea8474\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"21\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Readers need to click on the above spreadsheet to see the relationship between revenue and inventory growth YoY and note how during COVID in 2020, inventory fell sharply and then – perhaps – a much stronger reopening was expected, which drove an inventory build.</p><p>And now in the late stages of 2022, particularly the last quarter, Walmart is finally getting the relationship back to normal, although it’s still not quite there yet, since ideally, revenue growth should exceed inventory growth YoY, for at least 3 of the 4 quarters every year.</p><p>What’s important for readers to understand is that this relationship impacts working capital and thus cash flow from operations, so just this one metric – particularly for a retailer – can have a dramatic influence on profitability and cash flow.</p><p>Walmart’s typical “inventory turnover” is usually between 2.0x and 2.5x looking back to 2018, but it’s now at under 2.0x, with the last 3 quarters coming in around 1.8x as the retail giant tries to push the inventory bowling ball through the snake.</p><p><i><b>Average ticket vs. traffic at Walmart:</b></i></p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/332f3e192c3b45a529272f50930f72af\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"50\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>If you ever want some insight into a retail business look at “average ticket vs. traffic”: Walmart being the giant that it is, look how the two are used in tandem, both through the pandemic and then after it.</p><p>My guess is Walmart will do everything it can to reduce that “average ticket” over time. It’s a struggle now since the conference call notes said that Walmart is guiding to a consumer that might might slow spending in Q4 ’23 (ends Jan ’23) “given persistent inflationary pressure in food and consumables”, however that is probably a conservative guide for the giant retailer given its history.</p><p><i><b>Amazon: </b></i></p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/fe4ee98477a97035578994e17e74c01f\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"21\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>This table shows the identical measurement that Walmart contains but it’s not apples-to-apples since Amazon Web Services, Subscriptions and Advertising revenue segments are now 31% of Amazon’s total revenue as of 9/30/22. It’s unknown to me how subscriptions and advertising impact “inventory” which would distort the inventory numbers so to speak.</p><p>What’s clear is that Amazon is still 69% online, physical stores and 3rd party resellers, and you would think that the advantage to the 3rd party re-sellers for Amazon is that it would allow Amazon to not have to use their balance sheet to stock inventory. (That’s an assumption on my part.)</p><p>The point being that the last quarter where Amazon’s revenue growth exceeded inventory growth was the June ’21 quarter right around the time the stock peaked at $188 per share.</p><p>Coincidence or Correlation? You tell me what you think.</p><p>Still as Amazon’s ecommerce division rights itself after expanding too rapidly, revenue consisting of 69-70% of $502 billion in total revenue, there should be ample opportunity to obtain supplier concessions in the Amazon marketplace.</p><p><i><b>Costco:</b></i></p><p>TTM revenue for Costco as of the August ’22 quarter, was $226 bl.</p><p>Costco never suffered the “traffic” decline that Walmart and Home Depot have incurred, thus their quarterly comps, which averaged roughly 5-6% in calendar 2019, have averaged 13% since calendar 2020 or the earliest days since the pandemic began.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/98ef085cd44ff2d772e22c28d7df85f1\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"26\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>The problem with including Costco in an analysis with Walmart, Amazon and Home Depot, is that COST is a warehouse club and “inventory” is different than the typical retailer: my understanding is that inventory is taken in as a consignment rather than owned directly.</p><p>COST is probably better compared to Sam’s Club directly than Walmart itself, (with Sam’s Club being a division of Walmart) but with $226 billion in TTM sales, I thought it was worth a look from a market power perspective.</p><p>In Costco’s 10-Q, the various product lines are broken out and the revenue detailed and for COST, “Foods &amp; Sundries” and “Fresh Foods” are roughly 50% of COST’s total revenue.</p><p>(I’m guessing – and please note that – COST is probably considerably smaller than Walmart&#39;s pure grocery or “fresh foods” segment. COST’s Q shows that “fresh foods” is just 13% of total revenue as of the last quarter.</p><p>(Note too that the next COST earnings report is December 8th and thus readers will get another look at food and grocery inflation as of November ’22 quarter-end, before the next CPI report.)</p><p><i><b>Home Depot:</b></i></p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/57e116c38f010b75a0518c13078f757d\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"20\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>Although it’s not considered a “general merchandise retailer”, Home Depot was thrown into the mix given its annual revenue growth and housing’s importance to the CPI, i.e. owners&#39; equivalent rent, and such are a 30% weight in the CPI basket.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/5e8a09a9efc6fb5ade6a35e65306d4e9\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"25\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>This above spreadsheet shows that Home Depot like Walmart is relying on “ticket” vs. traffic to make it through both the post-Covid supply chain issues and the housing slowdown.</p><p>What I worry about regarding Home Depot is that if you look at “cash flow vs. net income” you could make a case for the Home Depot business model being under some stress.</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/4313b9b9553313538aa9b1f4f5ca4b8c\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"48\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/></p><p>This table compares Home Depot’s cash flow and free cash flow vs. net income and readers can see that as far back as 2017, the relationship looked normal but with the recent slowdown in housing, there is no question Home Depot is feeling the pressure, although part of it could be supply chain issues as well.</p><p>Is this a reason to sell Home Depot’s stock – probably not – but it speaks to how the quality of a company’s earnings are impacted when the model is placed under stress.</p><p><i><b>Summary/conclusion:</b></i> The total dollar value of US GDP at the end of 2021 was $23 trillion, and the four companies listed above represent about $1.5 trillion, or about 6.5% of that $23 trillion as of the latest quarter, using the “trailing-twelve-month” (TTM) revenue metric.</p><p>Walmart is America’s largest private sector employer employing 2.2 to 2.3 million, while Amazon is still a ways away from overtaking Walmart in that metric, but now employs 1.5 million Americans as of 9/30/22, up from 1.1 million as of September 2020.</p><p>Here’s how the trailing twelve-month revenue falls out by company as of the latest quarter reported:</p><ul><li>Walmart: $600 billion</li><li>Amazon: $502 billion</li><li>Costco: $227 billion</li><li>Home Depot: $157 billion</li><li>Total: $1,486 trillion</li></ul><p>The Wall Street Journal article made the point about Walmart’s and Amazon’s importance to consumer inflation, although many including David Faber of CNBC have done media specials on Walmart’s treatment of suppliers, etc. some of which are not always “fair and balanced” (and I’m not speaking of Faber’s special, which I thought was balanced).</p><p>But it’s at times like this that you can appreciate that as supply disruptions and the pandemic influences fade, Walmart has the ability to squeeze consumer inflation out of the pipeline. (Having never modeled Target, it wasn’t included in the above analysis.)</p><p>In Michael Porter’s legendary “Competitive Strategy” book, one of the competitive tenets in industry sparring matches is “power over suppliers”, thus Walmart could be said to have two of the basic principles, i.e. low-cost leader and power over suppliers, although Amazon has unquestionably closed the gap on Walmart and has become a formidable competitor since early this century.</p><p>Looking at Walmart’s “average” revenue growth since the mid ’90s here’s what I found:</p><ul><li>’20 to ’22: averaged 3% revenue growth</li><li>’10 to ’19: averaged 2% revenue growth</li><li>’00 to ’09: averaged 11% revenue growth</li><li>’96 to ’99: averaged 14% revenue growth</li></ul><p>What happened to Walmart’s revenue growth, if the same “compare” were run for Amazon, Amazon (and probably Costco too) would likely be the mirror image of these bullet points, which is probably a surprise to no one.</p><p>Walmart’s enormous competitive advantage today is that at least half their revenue – which was $600 billion TTM as of the last earnings report – is grocery, the holy grail of retail since it’s low cost and it drives foot traffic.</p><p>Walmart has to be the largest grocer in the world, or at the very least America, although I heard one CNBC guest around Walmart’s last earnings report say that he thought grocery was now 70% of Walmart’s total revenue. (That was a surprise.)</p><p>When Jeff Bezos stepped down as Amazon CEO, he said he was going to take on the “physical store” aspect of Amazon’s revenue base, which is the Whole Foods acquisition, thus while the big opportunity for Amazon is still “grocery” that has to be a very long uphill battle for the ecommerce giant given Walmart’s dominance. Not being a sell-side analyst it would seem that Costco and Kroger (KR) represent larger competitive threats to Walmart today than Amazon.</p><p>Agreeing in principle with the Wall Street Journal article, I hope this article provided a little more “analytical flavor” in terms of the numbers (and this article was probably too technical for easy reading), since these 4 retailers represent 6.5% of what was 2021 total GDP of $23 trillion.</p><p>Typically and historically per what’s been read, once inflation starts to roll over, it tends to continue to fall, so as Walmart and Amazon work through their bloated inventory and supply chain issues, expect more pressure on inflation, and in Walmart’s case especially food inflation.</p><p>Take everything you read here as one opinion, and with a substantial grain of salt. Since the cut, Kinder Morgan&#39;s dividend has more than doubled as it seeks to reward shareholders through a dividend supported by cash flow.</p><p>Kinder Morgan has transformed itself from an aggressive growth strategy to a defensive preservation strategy -- which is bad news for oil and gas bulls but great news for investors looking for a reliable dividend stock. In the past few years, Kinder Morgan has dramatically reduced its spending and paid off debt. Over 90% of its business is tied to stable take-or-pay and fee-based contracts that go years out, which protects against downside risk at the expense of limiting upside potential.</p><p>Kinder Morgan is unlikely to outperform other oil and gas stocks when prices are rising. But it&#39;s also much better positioned to earn strong cash flows in lower price environments as we saw in 2020. Given the stability of its businesses, Kinder Morgan is a worthy high-yield dividend stock worth considering now.</p><p><b>Throw some beans into your passive income stream</b></p><p><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/SBUX\">Starbucks</a> often finds itself left out of dividend discussions due to outdated perceptions that the company is still a growth stock. It&#39;s not, and it hasn&#39;t been for years.</p><p>The Starbucks of today is a much more boring and stable business. Over the past five years, Starbucks has grown revenue at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of just 6.4%. But over that same period, it grew net income at a CAGR of 8.3% and its dividend at a CAGR of 14.4%.</p><p>Paying the dividend is a big part of Starbucks&#39; strategy. So much so that the company released its most aggressive dividend and buyback program in company history. In the three-year period between fiscal 2022 and fiscal 2024, Starbucks plans to spend $20 billion on dividends and share repurchases. To put that number into perspective, consider that Starbucks spent a little over $2 billion in fiscal 2021 on dividends.</p><p>Investors looking for a strong and recognizable brand that is also an excellent dividend stock should look no further than Starbucks.</p><p><b><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/CLX\">Clorox</a>&#39;s dividend is safe</b></p><p><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/CLX\">Clorox</a> has had a rough go of it as of late, and these difficulties are reflected in the company&#39;s stock price. After blasting to a fresh all-time high in 2020, share prices of Clorox stock are now hovering around a three-year low and are down over 40% from that high.</p><p>Clorox&#39;s problems all boil down to shrinking profit margins in the face of higher inflation. The company is confident that its brands, such as Clorox, Glad trash bags, Burt&#39;s Bees, and Kingsford charcoal are leaders in their respective product categories. But higher costs, higher advertising spending, and supply chain challenges paint an uncertain picture of the quarters to come.</p><p>In addition to declining margins, Clorox&#39;s growth rate could be negative in fiscal 2022 as the company struggles to lap quarters that were less affected by inflation.</p><p>All told, Clorox is in for a multi-year period of weak growth. The silver lining is that all of this bad news is already public, so new investors considering Clorox now can buy the stock with all of these headwinds already digested by Wall Street.</p><p>The bull argument for Clorox would be that the company will recover over time, it&#39;s a consumer staple company that is resistant to a recession, and it is likely to continue paying and raising its dividend every year. Clorox is a Dividend Aristocrat, which is a member of the S&amp;P 500 that has paid and raised its dividend for at least 25 consecutive years. With a dividend yield of 3.4%, Clorox produces a healthy passive income stream.</p><p>A hands-off approach</p><p>Kinder Morgan, Starbucks, and Clorox may not have anything in common as companies. But as stocks, all three could be great additions to a diversified portfolio. But there are always exceptions.</p><p>Below is a screen of banks that are bucking the industry trend of expanding net interest margins, followed by another list of banks whose margins have widened the most over the past year.</p><p>On March 8, <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/SIVB\">SVB Financial Group</a> (SIVB) sold $21 billion in securities for a loss of $1.8 billion. SVB is the holding company for Silicon Valley Bank of Santa Clara, Calif. It had $212 billion in assets as of Dec. 31.</p><p>The bank said it was repositioning to &#34;increase asset sensitivity, to take advantage of the potential for higher short-term rates, partially lock-in funding costs, better protect net interest income (NII) and net interest margin <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/NIM\">$(NIM)$</a>, and enhance profitability.&#34;</p><p>In light of the loss on the securities sales, SVB will raise $2.25 billion in new capital through two offerings and a private placement. The prospect of dilution to shareholders&#39; ownership positions resulted in the company&#39;s shares sliding as much as 62% on March 9.</p><p>The entire banking industry seemed to take it on the chin on March 9, with the KBW Nasdaq Bank Index  sinking 7.5%.</p><p>See Tomi Kilgore&#39;s coverage for more details on SVB&#39;s offerings, the securities sale and reaction.</p><h2>Red margin flags</h2><p>Before SVB Financial decided to take such a dramatic step, the movement of its net interest margin was signaling that the bank wasn&#39;t well positioned for the combination of rising interest rates and slowing loan growth in the venture capital space.</p><p>A bank&#39;s net interest margin is the spread between its average yield on loans and investments and its average cost for deposits and borrowings.  This is an annualized calculation. Here&#39;s how the NIM moved for SVB Financial over the past year:</p><p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d98943297b9bd5d67486342b1fd3756e\" tg-width=\"934\" tg-height=\"206\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"/></p><p>SVB&#39;s net interest margin narrowed considerably during the fourth quarter, and it widened only slightly from the year-earlier quarter.</p><p>So now the question is which other banks might face pressure because their net interest margins have contracted, or because their margins have only expanded slighlty?</p><p>Starting with a list of U.S. banks with total assets of at least $10 billion, and removing purer investment banks, such as Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (GS) and Morgan Stanley (MS), we looked at 108 banks.</p><p>A uniform set of net interest margins for the past five quarters isn&#39;t available from FactSet for the full group -- it is only available for 56 of the banks. The Fed&#39;s chairman basically repeated his thesis from the previous press conference with slight adjustments to the currentsituation. So almost no pivot mood whatsoever.</p><p>Powell wanted to be a hawk, but frankly, it doesn&#39;t actually seem to matter anymore. In my opinion, the Fed has only two options: shatter the economy with even more restrictive policies, or watch the economy slow down with current policies. Both options lead to a recession. The only difference is how much consumer demand will fall and how much the rate will have to be cut in the future. The Fed will simply not go for softening right now without signals that it is not only preferred but necessary in my view. They started this cycle of hawkishness partly because of the arguable drop in confidence in the Fed a year earlier. And now, if they abandon this rhetoric, it may well destroy the credibility of the Fed.</p><p>No one will argue with the fact that a recession will help destroy inflation, which is replaced by deflation. But Powell wants the economy to expand and inflation to fall. Moreover, he &#34;is seeing progress in bringing down inflation without weakening of labor conditions.&#34; The problem is that inflation is still growing at a pretty rapid pace. Why? Because of the labor market strength, which seems to be the only reason for economic acceleration right now.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ae12b14a89789bf7f18237199ceaea2a\" tg-width=\"633\" tg-height=\"381\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>PCE Index (MoM) (Investing)</span></p><p>And why is the labor market so strong if the Fed keeps hitting the economy with a sledgehammer? Because historically it needed time to cool down after the monetary tightening. And as soon as high interest rates begin to affect the labor market, it will likely crumble because we have the weakest consumer in 2 decades.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/49b5c34f459f474628ef9d679d066336\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"362\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>Tradingeconomics</span></p><p>Another elephant in the room: the economy is already showing worrisome signs. However, as the economy feels more pressure from high interest rates, there will be less and less jobs being added. This will make a very, very weak consumer stop spending and start saving, which will trigger a massive fall in demand.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/f7cdc1a01d944265fe46e0c7c7ab22fb\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"247\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>Fed Funds Effective Rate (blue line) Vs Unemployment rate (red line) (FRED)</span></p><p>Thus, it is unclear to me how a 2% inflation without a substantial economic downturn is a &#39;base case&#39;.</p><h2>The debt market agrees</h2><p>Don&#39;t believe me, let the market speak for itself. We are now facing the deepest inversion in 43 years. That reflects the depth of the recession that traders expect and the certainty that it will happen.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/540f3cb6c9857eb7178fd587752d5059\" tg-width=\"635\" tg-height=\"417\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>Data by YCharts</span></p><p>There is still a huge demand for bonds at the far end of the curve (10+ years) as investors rush to lock in good returns as they probably expect they won&#39;t be able to get them anywhere else due to the recession. Thus, the outflow from short-term bonds to long-term bonds continues. Would such behavior be appropriate if a recession were not the baseline scenario over the year&#39;s horizon? Of course not. The one not talking about it right now is the Fed though. So who is right: Powell, who marked inflation as &#39;transitory&#39; in 2021, or thousands of institutional investors that were right almost every single time for the last 50 years?</p><h2>Market reaction</h2><p>As usual, Powell&#39;s performance gave the markets an impulse, most likely due to the covering of short positions.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d2520e2d1cb15c520c0a6eb9b244aee1\" tg-width=\"635\" tg-height=\"433\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>Data by YCharts</span></p><p>The most interesting thing is that the expectations of market participants have shifted towards easing monetary policy by the end of the year, although the chairman of the Fed did not give any signals for this, except for the statement about the &#34;early stages of disinflation&#34;. I recommend not using the FedWatch Tool meeting probabilities data to predict year-end rates though, as these expectations are based on Fed Funds futures, which are highly volatile and do not provide a complete picture of what is happening.</p><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1062e9dd3dd389eb88f0f7a2f719ad88\" tg-width=\"445\" tg-height=\"215\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>FedWatch tool</span></p><h2>3 reasons to sell SPY right now</h2><p>Moving on to the outlook forNYSEARCA:SPY, it actually hasn&#39;t changed much after the FOMC meeting. I believe that $410-$420 is a great time to take profits for the following reasons:</p><ul><li>66% (332) of stocks in SPY ETF are trading above the 200-day average, which normally could be treated as a bullish sign if we had a positive sentiment. Selling at the local highs of this indicator would&#39;ve be a good decision during 2022.</li></ul><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/fd888842a3d506becc455a91013ce66a\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"294\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>Percent Of Stocks Above 200-Day Average (Barchart)</span></p><ul><li>Liquidity will likely be withdrawn from the markets at a record pace. So far, the US Treasury is throwing firewood into the system, but the closer we are to accepting the national debt ceiling, the closer Treasury is to borrowing money again. Thus, we will have the Fed, which will sell bonds for $95 billion a month, and the US Treasury, which will issue (sell) bonds for $200-300 billion a month. In total, 300-400 billion per month will be extracted from the system. If liquidity is withdrawn, it will be almost impossible to grow.</li></ul><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/a1efb2005bb0f8d6773f949a3066551e\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"247\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>FRED</span></p><ul><li>This reporting season is unlikely to please investors. We have already seen the earnings misses from Apple (AAPL), Alphabet (GOOG)(GOOGL), and Amazon (AMZN). Typically, these giants set the mood for the entire IT sector, which makes up 23.9% of all SPY assets.</li></ul><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/2fa3524b01ed44368da81222f2374c8f\" tg-width=\"401\" tg-height=\"557\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"/><span>CNBC</span></p><h2>Conclusion</h2><p>Powell, as always, said the same thing he said before. Most of this has already been repeated throughout the year, 90% of the entire speech can be cut and nothing would change. The Fed appears to understand perfectly well what is happening, but it is not worth waiting for any signals from it yet in my view. 2% inflation without a &#39;substantial downturn&#39; is a perfect example of how the Fed is still trying to make some kind of verbal intervention, but the attempts seem to be in vain, it just looks implausible.</p><p>Thus, the outlook for SPY stays absolutely unchanged in my view, and I recommend selling the rally.</p><p><i>This article is written by Vera Glebova for reference only. The deal added 425 million new shares to the market and bumped the acquisition price from $35 billion to $60 billion as AMD&#39;s stock price soared. In our view it was likely the cause of significant selling pressure since acquisition close.</p><p>Since the acquisition, AMD&#39;s share price has dropped by more than 20%. We still believe, given the FCF of the acquisition, it was overpriced, but at this point it&#39;s complete and factored in and there&#39;s no longer the risk of AMD&#39;s share price going up increasing the acquisition price. Xilinx still has $1 billion in annual FCF.</p><h2>AMD Product Portfolio</h2><p>AMD has focused on substantially expanding its product portfolio.</p><p>AMD has released numerous new products and it continues to have additional opportunities to expand its line-up. The company has launched a new line-up of lower cost gaming processors, along with numerous higher-end pro processors. The company has released the 6600X GPU on RDNA2, an older architecture, and has continued its growth.</p><p>AMD, like all other current silicon companies, is struggling from the current silicon shortage. However, it&#39;s continuing to release new products, especially when it comes to remaining competitive with CPUs released by AMD. The company&#39;s GPUs have struggled more to remain competitive with Nvidia, however, overall, the company&#39;s performance has remained strong.</p><h2>AMD Financial Trends</h2><p>AMD is focused on continuing to perform strong financially. We expect similarly substantial revenue growth for FY 2022 and FY 2023. The company achieved a strong 22% operating margin and diluted EPS of 2.57 giving the company a P/E of around 40 at the present time.</p><p>The company has continued to invest in its business and achieved FCF of $3.2 billion with strong strategic investments. That&#39;s a FCF yield of around 3%. The company is fairly expensive at the current time, however, continued double digit growth can bring that number up rapidly. On top of this, the company still has $3.6 billion in cash.</p><p>Showing its financial strength, the company has announced a $8 billion share repurchase authorization. That&#39;s on top of $1 billion left from the company&#39;s previous authorization, enough for the company to repurchase almost 10% of its outstanding shares. The company has been rapidly increasing its revenue. Simultaneously, the company has been steadily increasing its gross margins. The company finished 2020 with margins of roughly 45% and the company finished 2021 with margins of roughly 50%.</p><p>Should the company manage to continue increasing both margins, profits will increase faster than either, supporting increased shareholder rewards.</p><h2>AMD vs. TSMC</h2><p>In our last article, we discussed the concern that TSMC&#39;s (TSM) lead in the markets was making AMD&#39;s life harder. Specifically, companies such as Intel are looking to TSMC as well for growth and cutting-edge products. Reportedly, Apple and Intel are both competing much better than AMD for TSMC&#39;s 3 nm node with substantial initial volumes sold out.</p><p>However, TSMC has been rapidly increasing its capital spending and other companies are following suit. TSMC&#39;s planned 2022 capital spending is expected to be in the $40 to $44 billion range, and other companies are ramping up spending as well. That could allow a substantial increase in capital and substantial shareholder returns.</p><h2>Thesis Risk</h2><p>In our view, there are two substantial risks to investing in AMD.</p><p>The first is large tech companies. As core companies have become larger, they&#39;ve started building their own silicon. Amazon and Apple have been working down this path. As AMD&#39;s customers become larger, and silicon increasingly favors dedicated ASICs versus more generalized HW, we expect this trend to continue.</p><p>The second is new entrants. Intel is entering the dedicated GPU market with a substantial amount of muscle. Nvidia could enter the dedicated CPU market. The traditional near-guaranteed oligopoly that AMD once participated in is fading. The company will be able to persevere, but it&#39;s still a substantial risk worth noting.</p><h2>Conclusion</h2><p>Since we last recommended selling AMD, the company&#39;s share price has dropped dramatically. The company still has a unique portfolio of assets and its valuation has come down significantly. More so, the increasing cost of Xilinx acquisition has been quantified. That capped cost means that the company can focus more on future shareholder returns.</p><p>The company&#39;s TSMC capital spending is expected to be much more significant, increasing available volumes. At the same time, AMD has continued to launch exciting new products. Since then, the stock has dropped almost 30% versus the S&P 500's 3%. As a result of that recent weakness, along with AMD's continued product portfolio strength, we feel that it's now worth taking a second look at reinvesting into AMD.AMD And XilinxOur original complaint was that AMD was buying Xilinx for a lofty price because of the stock-based transaction. The deal added 425 million new shares to the market and bumped the acquisition price from $35 billion to $60 billion as AMD's stock price soared. In our view it was likely the cause of significant selling pressure since acquisition close.Since the acquisition, AMD's share price has dropped by more than 20%. We still believe, given the FCF of the acquisition, it was overpriced, but at this point it's complete and factored in and there's no longer the risk of AMD's share price going up increasing the acquisition price. Xilinx still has $1 billion in annual FCF.AMD Product PortfolioAMD has focused on substantially expanding its product portfolio.AMD has released numerous new products and it continues to have additional opportunities to expand its line-up. The company has launched a new line-up of lower cost gaming processors, along with numerous higher-end pro processors. The company has released the 6600X GPU on RDNA2, an older architecture, and has continued its growth.AMD, like all other current silicon companies, is struggling from the current silicon shortage. However, it's continuing to release new products, especially when it comes to remaining competitive with CPUs released by AMD. The company's GPUs have struggled more to remain competitive with Nvidia, however, overall, the company's performance has remained strong.AMD Financial TrendsAMD is focused on continuing to perform strong financially. The company is expensive at a $160 billion market capitalization, but that's down $100 billion from its 52-week high, and the company is much more reasonably valued at the current time.AMD Investor PresentationAMD Financial Strength - AMD Investor PresentationThe company grew its annual revenue by 68% YoY for FY 2020 to FY 2021 up to a total of $16.4 billion. We expect similarly substantial revenue growth for FY 2022 and FY 2023. The company achieved a strong 22% operating margin and diluted EPS of 2.57 giving the company a P/E of around 40 at the present time.The company has continued to invest in its business and achieved FCF of $3.2 billion with strong strategic investments. That's a FCF yield of around 3%. The company is fairly expensive at the current time, however, continued double digit growth can bring that number up rapidly. On top of this, the company still has $3.6 billion in cash.Showing its financial strength, the company has announced a $8 billion share repurchase authorization. That's on top of $1 billion left from the company's previous authorization, enough for the company to repurchase almost 10% of its outstanding shares. The company can take advantage of its current lower share price and use it to drive substantial shareholder rewards.AMD Investor PresentationAMD Gross Margin - AMD Investor PresentationFinancially, AMD is focused on the \"double whammy\" of potential shareholder returns. The company has been rapidly increasing its revenue. Simultaneously, the company has been steadily increasing its gross margins. The company finished 2020 with margins of roughly 45% and the company finished 2021 with margins of roughly 50%.Should the company manage to continue increasing both margins, profits will increase faster than either, supporting increased shareholder rewards.AMD vs. TSMCIn our last article, we discussed the concern that TSMC's (TSM) lead in the markets was making AMD's life harder. Specifically, companies such as Intel are looking to TSMC as well for growth and cutting-edge products. Reportedly, Apple and Intel are both competing much better than AMD for TSMC's 3 nm node with substantial initial volumes sold out.However, TSMC has been rapidly increasing its capital spending and other companies are following suit. TSMC's planned 2022 capital spending is expected to be in the $40 to $44 billion range, and other companies are ramping up spending as well. That could allow a substantial increase in capital and substantial shareholder returns.Thesis RiskIn our view, there are two substantial risks to investing in AMD.The first is large tech companies. As core companies have become larger, they've started building their own silicon. Amazon and Apple have been working down this path. As AMD's customers become larger, and silicon increasingly favors dedicated ASICs versus more generalized HW, we expect this trend to continue.The second is new entrants. Intel is entering the dedicated GPU market with a substantial amount of muscle. Nvidia could enter the dedicated CPU market. The traditional near-guaranteed oligopoly that AMD once participated in is fading. The company will be able to persevere, but it's still a substantial risk worth noting.ConclusionSince we last recommended selling AMD, the company's share price has dropped dramatically. The company still has a unique portfolio of assets and its valuation has come down significantly. More so, the increasing cost of Xilinx acquisition has been quantified. That capped cost means that the company can focus more on future shareholder returns.The company's TSMC capital spending is expected to be much more significant, increasing available volumes. At the same time, AMD has continued to launch exciting new products. What is interesting here is that the stock market and the bond market have effectively stopped reacting to bad news.</p><p>The earnings season has been a case in point both <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AMZN\">Amazon</a> and Meta or the old Facebook were severely marked down on earnings disappointments as were <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/GOOG\">Google</a> and <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/MSFT\">Microsoft</a> during last week&#39;s critical week for tech earnings but the broad market index rallied, in particular the Dow Jones index was very strong.</p><p>This suggests that the stock market is moving on from some of the concerns it had earlier this year, also with inflation still high there are signs that bond yields are coming in from the extreme high levels of the past couple of weeks - the 10 year bond is now close to the 4% level, a level that&#39;s still painful for stocks, but it has arguably hit a recent high.</p><h2>Earnings</h2><p>Importantly the dollar has softened and in many cases this year currency markets have prefigured stress across other asset classes so the case is building for a bear market rally into the end of the year. Advertisers also know that Roku consumers are worth reaching. Average revenue per user is up 34% over the past year.</p><p>Supply chain issues have slowed the production of its dongles, but Roku has enough deals in place with smart TV manufacturers to be the factory installed operating system of choice for many leading brands. After breaking through with a profit last year, analysts don&#39;t see a return to positive net income until 2024. However, its now larger e-commerce segment is expected to see its revenue soar 76%. Its smaller fintech division is expected to see its top line climb 155% this year.</p><p>Growth will slow at Sea Limited this year from the 106% year-over-year burst it posted the last time it reported quarterly results. Sea Limited will have a financial update in two weeks.
