Weeks","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2230416981","media":"Barrons","summary":"Twitter is reportedly talking with Tesla CEO Elon Musk about a possible sale. Twitter stock is risin","content":"

Twitter is reportedly talking with Tesla CEO Elon Musk about a possible sale. Twitter stock is rising, but shares are still not up as much as bullish investors might expect now that it appears the company is in play. That could spell opportunity.

Late Sunday night, The Wall Street Journal reported that Twitter (ticker: TWTR) is engaging Musk in buyout talks. Sunday is just 20 days after Musk's 9% stake was disclosed on April 4.

It's taken no time at all for an apparently passive stake to turn into high-level negotiations that might reshape social media. Twitter didn't immediately respond to a request for comment about the reported talks.

Shares were up 1.6% in premarket trading at $49.69 a share. S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average futures were in the red, off 0.9% and 0.8%, respectively. Twitter stock is still below the $54.47 level reached on April 5, the day after Musk's stake was disclosed, and below the $54.20 bid price offered by Musk.

Twitter stock reached those heights despite Musk describing his initial stake as passive. Investors, back then, didn't seem to buy it and expected the Tesla CEO, and world's richest human, to disrupt the social media platform.

Investors look to have been right. The passive label was short-lived. Twitter offered Musk a board seat, which Musk ultimately rejected. Then came Musk's offer for the entire company for $54.20 a share, which Musk described as his best and final.

Twitter stock, however, closed down 1.7% at only $45.08 a share on April 14, the day the offer was disclosed. As Musk got more serious, investors became more convinced he wouldn't be successful.

Investors might have had a point yet again. Twitter stock is rising, but shares are still not up as much as bullish investors might expect now that it appears the company is in play. That could spell opportunity.Late Sunday night, The Wall Street Journal reported that Twitter (ticker: TWTR) is engaging Musk in buyout talks. Sunday is just 20 days after Musk's 9% stake was disclosed on April 4.It's taken no time at all for an apparently passive stake to turn into high-level negotiations that might reshape social media. Twitter didn't immediately respond to a request for comment about the reported talks.Shares were up 1.6% in premarket trading at $49.69 a share. S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average futures were in the red, off 0.9% and 0.8%, respectively. Twitter stock is still below the $54.47 level reached on April 5, the day after Musk's stake was disclosed, and below the $54.20 bid price offered by Musk.Twitter stock reached those heights despite Musk describing his initial stake as passive. Investors, back then, didn't seem to buy it and expected the Tesla CEO, and world's richest human, to disrupt the social media platform.Investors look to have been right. The passive label was short-lived. Twitter offered Musk a board seat, which Musk ultimately rejected. Then came Musk's offer for the entire company for $54.20 a share, which Musk described as his best and final.Twitter stock, however, closed down 1.7% at only $45.08 a share on April 14, the day the offer was disclosed. As Musk got more serious, investors became more convinced he wouldn't be successful.Investors might have had a point yet again. Twitter adopted a so-called poison pill that is designed to thwart unsolicited bids for a company by making it more expensive for the acquirer. For now, these concerns are largely hypothetical, and we'll get a better idea about where the business stands by the middle of 2022.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":374,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9084427619,"gmtCreate":1650907239131,"gmtModify":1676534812816,"author":{"id":"4109600599424330","authorId":"4109600599424330","name":"Jiahuihui","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/bb53af46d1b5b1b5a0e8231d8bb37e4b","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4109600599424330","authorIdStr":"4109600599424330"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust(SPY)$[Cry] [Cry] [Cry] ","listText":"$SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust(SPY)$[Cry] [Cry] [Cry] ","text":"$SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust(SPY)$[Cry] [Cry] [Cry]","images":[{"img":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/755530f92f4b77a894c554c3ef21eaeb","width":"1080","height":"1949"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9084427619","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":261,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9082827707,"gmtCreate":1650551946185,"gmtModify":1676534750242,"author":{"id":"4109600599424330","authorId":"4109600599424330","name":"Jiahuihui","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/bb53af46d1b5b1b5a0e8231d8bb37e4b","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4109600599424330","authorIdStr":"4109600599424330"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$GoPro(GPRO)$[Miser] [Miser] [Miser] ","listText":"$GoPro(GPRO)$[Miser] [Miser] [Miser] ","text":"$GoPro(GPRO)$[Miser] [Miser] [Miser]","images":[{"img":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/44518a5a480b81a59518b12151c085da","width":"1080","height":"2158"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9082827707","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":232,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9082827978,"gmtCreate":1650551923491,"gmtModify":1676534750219,"author":{"id":"4109600599424330","authorId":"4109600599424330","name":"Jiahuihui","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/bb53af46d1b5b1b5a0e8231d8bb37e4b","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4109600599424330","authorIdStr":"4109600599424330"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Pfizer(PFE)$[Miser] [Miser] [Miser] ","listText":"$Pfizer(PFE)$[Miser] [Miser] [Miser] ","text":"$Pfizer(PFE)$[Miser] [Miser] [Miser]","images":[{"img":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/31721c6bb5c69737072cddb474d28ecc","width":"1080","height":"1920"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9082827978","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":138,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0}],"hots":[{"id":9032842072,"gmtCreate":1647341264375,"gmtModify":1676534218248,"author":{"id":"4109600599424330","authorId":"4109600599424330","name":"Jiahuihui","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/bb53af46d1b5b1b5a0e8231d8bb37e4b","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4109600599424330","authorIdStr":"4109600599424330"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"[smile] ","listText":"[smile] ","text":"[smile]","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":5,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9032842072","repostId":"1146709071","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1146709071","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1647338683,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1146709071?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2022-03-15 18:04","market":"sg","language":"en","title":"Singapore Shares Buck Regional Trend, STI up 0.12%","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1146709071","media":"Businesstimes","summary":"SINGAPORE shares were pushed into positive territory on Tuesday (Mar 15), bucking the broad-market t","content":"
\n
SINGAPORE shares were pushed into positive territory on Tuesday (Mar 15), bucking the broad-market trend as concerns over the lockdown of tech hub Shenzhen and Russia-Ukraine tensions continue to ...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n","source":"lsy1607307803821","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; Is this a good sign in the face of multiple headwinds in 2022, or is TSLA ripe for a sharper correction from here?

Has Tesla stock (TSLA) been a good investment? It depends on who you ask. So far in 2022, TSLA has been a loser in absolute terms and relative to most equity benchmarks.

However, looking back a few years, this stock has been one of the best performers among large-cap names. The big question is: will Tesla be able to defend its rich valuations in a year of numerous market headwinds? Or is a sharper decline only a matter of time?

TSLA: impressive performance

Let’s start with the chart below. It shows how, so far in 2022, Tesla stock (blue line) has underperformed the tech-rich Nasdaq 100 and the autonomous/electric vehicle peer group (DRIV). Compared to other high-growth, high-valuation names like those contained in the ARK Innovation ETF (ARKK), however, TSLA has done better.

Figure 2:Tesla stock (blue line) has underperformed the tech-rich Nasdaq 100 and the autonomous/electric vehicle peer group DRIV.

This is not to say, however, that TSLA has been a bad investment in the past several months or couple of years — quite the opposite, in fact.

This next chart shows how Tesla stock has lavishly outperformed all of the names mentioned above since around the bottom of the COVID-19 bear. The five-year chart (not depicted here) does not look much worse than this.

Figure 3:Tesla stock has lavishly outperformed Nasdaq 100, ARKK and DRIV.

Resilience or correction ahead?

There are two ways to interpret recent price action in Tesla stock. The glass-half-full view is that TSLA has been resilient to this year’s selloff. Considering roughly 90% in annualized returns between 2017 and 2021, Tesla’s 28% YTD dip in 2022 has been fairly small by comparison.

Bulls have business fundamentals reasons to think that Tesla will continue to climb from here, given enough time. The electric vehicle industry is expected to grow aggressively in the next several years: CAGR of 23% through 2027, according to one source.

The Russia-Ukraine crisis and spike in crude oil prices could also be a positive for Tesla in the end. Tesla’s products are one answer to the global dependence on hydrocarbons that has caused so much turmoil, including inflationary pressures, in the past few months.

But then, there is the glass-half-empty argument. Tesla stock is still up 77% per year for the past five years, despite all the macroeconomic and geopolitical headwinds. Isn’t it time for shares to de-risk a bit more, as those of so many of Tesla’s peers have since early last year?

Supporting this idea are rich valuations. According to Seeking Alpha, Tesla stock commands a very high 2022 P/E of 73 times on earnings growth that is expected to decline to a fairly modest 15% through 2025. Is this a good sign in the face of multiple headwinds in 2022, or is TSLA ripe for a sharper correction from here?Has Tesla stock (TSLA) been a good investment? It depends on who you ask. So far in 2022, TSLA has been a loser in absolute terms and relative to most equity benchmarks. However, looking back a few years, this stock has been one of the best performers among large-cap names. The big question is: will Tesla be able to defend its rich valuations in a year of numerous market headwinds? Or is a sharper decline only a matter of time?TSLA: impressive performanceLet’s start with the chart below. It shows how, so far in 2022, Tesla stock (blue line) has underperformed the tech-rich Nasdaq 100 and the autonomous/electric vehicle peer group (DRIV). Compared to other high-growth, high-valuation names like those contained in the ARK Innovation ETF (ARKK), however, TSLA has done better.Figure 2:Tesla stock (blue line) has underperformed the tech-rich Nasdaq 100 and the autonomous/electric vehicle peer group DRIV.This is not to say, however, that TSLA has been a bad investment in the past several months or couple of years — quite the opposite, in fact. This next chart shows how Tesla stock has lavishly outperformed all of the names mentioned above since around the bottom of the COVID-19 bear. The five-year chart (not depicted here) does not look much worse than this.Figure 3:Tesla stock has lavishly outperformed Nasdaq 100, ARKK and DRIV.Resilience or correction ahead? There are two ways to interpret recent price action in Tesla stock. The glass-half-full view is that TSLA has been resilient to this year’s selloff. Considering roughly 90% in annualized returns between 2017 and 2021, Tesla’s 28% YTD dip in 2022 has been fairly small by comparison.Bulls have business fundamentals reasons to think that Tesla will continue to climb from here, given enough time. Isn’t it time for shares to de-risk a bit more, as those of so many of Tesla’s peers have since early last year?Supporting this idea are rich valuations. According to Seeking Alpha, Tesla stock commands a very high 2022 P/E of 73 times on earnings growth that is expected to decline to a fairly modest 15% through 2025. Is this multiple justifiable in the current market environment?2022 will be the moment of truthClearly, it is impossible to tell for sure whether the optimistic or the pessimistic views on Tesla stock will prove to be correct in the end. The remainder of 2022 will be crucial at determining which way Tesla stock will bifurcate.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":295,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9012855632,"gmtCreate":1649308734878,"gmtModify":1676534489865,"author":{"id":"4109600599424330","authorId":"4109600599424330","name":"Jiahuihui","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/bb53af46d1b5b1b5a0e8231d8bb37e4b","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4109600599424330","authorIdStr":"4109600599424330"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Pfizer(PFE)$[Miser] ","listText":"$Pfizer(PFE)$[Miser] ","text":"$Pfizer(PFE)$[Miser]","images":[{"img":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/ab2c68a27b27cd468e6be3ba15f9fe82","width":"1080","height":"1920"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":3,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9012855632","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":111,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9064387250,"gmtCreate":1652279581270,"gmtModify":1676535067903,"author":{"id":"4109600599424330","authorId":"4109600599424330","name":"Jiahuihui","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/bb53af46d1b5b1b5a0e8231d8bb37e4b","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4109600599424330","authorIdStr":"4109600599424330"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Tesla Motors(TSLA)$[Miser] [Miser] [Miser] ","listText":"$Tesla Motors(TSLA)$[Miser] [Miser] [Miser] ","text":"$Tesla Motors(TSLA)$[Miser] [Miser] [Miser]","images":[{"img":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/a3d3b3f54e78ab62e9568f59e8b37853","width":"1080","height":"1949"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9064387250","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":417,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9061894483,"gmtCreate":1651597070587,"gmtModify":1676534933073,"author":{"id":"4109600599424330","authorId":"4109600599424330","name":"Jiahuihui","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/bb53af46d1b5b1b5a0e8231d8bb37e4b","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4109600599424330","authorIdStr":"4109600599424330"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Tesla Motors(TSLA)$[Miser] [Miser] [Miser] ","listText":"$Tesla Motors(TSLA)$[Miser] [Miser] [Miser] ","text":"$Tesla Motors(TSLA)$[Miser] [Miser] [Miser]","images":[{"img":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/322dbf5a2055af788068865bb517f18a","width":"1080","height":"1949"}],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9061894483","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":288,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":1,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9069123694,"gmtCreate":1651251801344,"gmtModify":1676534878752,"author":{"id":"4109600599424330","authorId":"4109600599424330","name":"Jiahuihui","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/bb53af46d1b5b1b5a0e8231d8bb37e4b","crmLevel":2,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4109600599424330","authorIdStr":"4109600599424330"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"[What] [What] [Cool] [What] ","listText":"[What] [What] [Cool] [What] ","text":"[What] [What] [Cool] [What]","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9069123694","repostId":"1152557014","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1152557014","kind":"news","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Providing stock market headlines, business news, financials and earnings ","home_visible":1,"media_name":"Tiger Newspress","id":"1079075236","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8274c5b9d4c2852bfb1c4d6ce16c68ba"},"pubTimestamp":1651235868,"share":"https://ttm.financial/m/news/1152557014?lang=&edition=fundamental","pubTime":"2022-04-29 20:37","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Pre-Bell | Amazon Tumbles; cycle.

The chipmaker has several growth catalysts lined up for the foreseeable future, and its shares are trading at attractive valuations, which is probably scaring the shorts away.

Investors may want to accumulate AMD's shares on price corrections.

AMD (NASDAQ:AMD) has been surrounded by bearish narratives of late. Where many believe that intensifying competitive pressures from Intel (INTC) and Nvidia (NVDA) will lead to a slump inits business, others feel its shares are overextended and are poised to correct. While these arguments have some merit, the Street is acting out differently altogether. Latest data reveals that short interest in AMD dropped by a massive 40% in the last cycle. This suggests that market participants are skeptical of betting against the chipmaker and that its shares may have limited downside potential from current levels.

The Shorter’s Exodus

Let me start by saying the short interest metric is basically the total number of short positions that are open against any given stock at the end of bi-monthly reporting cycles. A material rise in the metric indicates that market participants bet against a given stock as, perhaps, they perceive it to be overvalued and anticipate it to decline in value in coming weeks. Conversely, a sharp drop in the metric highlights a rapid short unwinding as, perhaps, market participants feel the stock has bottomed out and has limited downside potential. So, the short interest metric is a handy tool to gauge the Street’s ever-evolving sentiment pertaining to any given stock.

Now, coming back to AMD, several interesting data points came to light in the latest short interest publication. For starters, its short interest amounted to roughly 27.8 million at the end of the latest cycle. Before we dive deeper into what this means and represents, it’s important to note that AMD’s short interest figure was down by a massive 39.9% sequentially and 68% in the last 2 months. The preliminary assessment suggests that short-side market participants exited their positions in the chipmaker as quickly as they could.

Wall Street Journal

Secondly, AMD has around 1.62 billion floating shares. This means that only 1.7% of its public float had been shorted at the end of the last cycle. If market participants felt that the bearish arguments surrounding AMD were legitimate and held merit, they would have initiated short positions in the name and we would have seen higher shorting levels in the stock. But clearly, market participants felt it was best to avoid shorting AMD for the time being at least.

Next, I wanted to confirm if this short unwinding was market-wide across the entire semiconductor industry or if it was prevalent specifically in AMD’s case. So, in order to test the hypothesis, I pulled the shorting activity for 50 other semiconductor stocks that are listed on US bourses.

As it turns out, there was an even split between the stocks that saw their short interest figures rise, and decrease, in the last cycle. So, market participants were, overall, neutral on the semiconductor industry. There were stocks that saw their short interest figures surge by as much as 29% but, interestingly, AMD’s short interest figure declined the most in the entire study group. Also, it’s worth noting that AMD’s short interest as a percentage of its entire float, was one of the lowest in our study group.

Business Quant

These data points confirm that short-side traders actively wound up their positions in AMD and are wary of initiating any new positions. But this begs the question – why are they so skeptical in betting against the chipmaker in the first place?

Reasons for Skepticism

There are broadly three reasons, in my opinion, which is keeping short-side traders at bay. The Shorter’s ExodusLet me start by saying the short interest metric is basically the total number of short positions that are open against any given stock at the end of bi-monthly reporting cycles. The preliminary assessment suggests that short-side market participants exited their positions in the chipmaker as quickly as they could.Wall Street JournalSecondly, AMD has around 1.62 billion floating shares. This means that only 1.7% of its public float had been shorted at the end of the last cycle. If market participants felt that the bearish arguments surrounding AMD were legitimate and held merit, they would have initiated short positions in the name and we would have seen higher shorting levels in the stock. But clearly, market participants felt it was best to avoid shorting AMD for the time being at least.Next, I wanted to confirm if this short unwinding was market-wide across the entire semiconductor industry or if it was prevalent specifically in AMD’s case. Also, it’s worth noting that AMD’s short interest as a percentage of its entire float, was one of the lowest in our study group.Business QuantThese data points confirm that short-side traders actively wound up their positions in AMD and are wary of initiating any new positions. But this begs the question – why are they so skeptical in betting against the chipmaker in the first place?Reasons for SkepticismThere are broadly three reasons, in my opinion, which is keeping short-side traders at bay. First, AMD, as a company, has been growing at a rapid pace over the past several quarters. It has two reportable segments – namely Computing and Graphics, and Enterprise, Embedded and Semi-Custom – and both of them have been posting sequential revenue growth for many quarters now. The chipmaker is yet to exhibit signs of its growth plateauing which makes it a short-side trader’s nightmare.Business QuantSecondly, AMD has a number of catalysts lined up to ensure that its revenue growth momentum remains intact, or accelerates further, in the next few quarters at the very least.Itlaunched7 new CPU SKUs about three weeks ago, which will be generally available later this month, to finally target the budget computing space that Intel has dominated for the past 5 to 6 quarters.AMD’s upcoming 6000-series APUs reportedly pack in significantlypowerfuland efficient integrated graphics cores. This should help it win ground in the notebook space against both Nvidia and Intel. The chipmaker also slashedpricesfor existing SKUs to compete better against Intel’s 12th-gen SKUs.Altogether, these initiatives are likely to boost AMD’s revenue and its market share across desktop and notebook segments. Also, it’s worth noting that these are interim moves to keep AMD’s product portfolio competitive until it transitions to Taiwan Semiconductor’s (TSM) 5nm fabrication process and reclaims process leadership. This has made its shares attractively valued at current levels, especially when compared to some of the other rapidly growing semiconductor stocks. This suggests that AMD’s shares have ample upside, and limited downside potential, from its current levels.
