Apple also posted beats on the top and bottom lines, reporting fiscal second-quarter earnings of $1.53 per share on $90.75 billion in revenue. That topped analysts’ estimates for earnings of $1.50 per share on revenue of $90.01 billion, per LSEG.

Block — The payment services provider slipped more than 1% despite posting first-quarter results that beat analysts’ expectations. Google parent Alphabet, Microsoft and Apple reported higher profits and sales than Wall Street had forecast. Their shares nevertheless fell after key business segments failed to perform as well as analysts expected. Alphabet dropped 7.5% the day after its report, its worst session since October, while Apple slipped 0.5%, selling off for the week. Microsoft fell 2.7% the day after its results, before rebounding to end the week up 1.8%.

"It's because there's so many people that have crowded into it -- anything that was perceived to be, 'Well, this isn't completely bulletproof. We're out,'" said George Maris, global equities chief investment officer at Principal Asset Management.

Magnificent Seven shares have surged over the past year, propelled by bets that they would be the biggest beneficiaries of a coming boom in artificial intelligence technology. They have also helped send the overall stock market to repeated records: The S&P 500 is up 4% to start 2024. Excluding Tesla, the Magnificent Seven are projected to report a 62.8% jump in earnings for the fourth quarter. The other 494 companies in the S&P 500 are expected to post an 8.6% decline. All together, earnings are expected to grow 1.6%, FactSet data show.

The big question for investors: How soon can the spending on AI to build new businesses produce new revenue and profit? So far, the companies have seen little result from their investments.

Tech stocks were also dinged last week by waning hopes for near-term cuts in interest rates. The S&P 500 fell 1.6% Wednesday, its worst day since September, after Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said a March rate cut was unlikely. The index rebounded later in the week after data showed hiring accelerated in January with the U.S. economy adding far more jobs than economists expected. (NYSE:NIO) previewed its Q1 results ten days ago, and despite what some have qualified as disappointing results and guidance, the stock is up nearly 30% in the last month.

Results, while not great, have been good in a challenging macroeconomic context. But most important are the numerous growth catalysts that NIO has announced in the last few months.

On top of that, with the recent rally, NIO shares have shown clear evidence of a sentiment shift and early signs that a bottom could be in.

With that said, I am changing my rating back to a strong buy, as I see this as an opportunity to both buy NIO near the low while also buying shares into strength.

Recent Results

In my last article on NIO, I talked about the challenges posed by the CCP and delisting fears. I gave NIO a buy rating back then since I was fundamentally bullish, but the environment and share price were not. Now, with the latest results in place, numerous catalysts and a strong trend reversal, I am shifting my view back to a strong buy.

Let’s begin by looking at deliveries for the latest quarter.

NIO Q1 Deliveries(IR NIO)

NIO delivered 25,768 vehicles in Q1, which was only a 0.3% increase versus the latest quarter but a 25% increase YoY.

While deliveries have certainly been underwhelming, it is perhaps the shrinking margins which investors have been most concerned about:

NIO Financial Results(NIO IR)

Although NIO provided a technical beat on EPS, vehicle margin has contracted by 310bp YoY and 280bp QoQ. The gross margin now sits at 14.8%, while it was 19.5% this time last year.

Investors are rightly asking themselves how a company like NIO will return value to them in the future. NIO is in a very competitive market and is also fighting supply disruptions, along with higher input costs brought about by inflation.

However, if we focus on what NIO can control, we see strong initiatives coming from the company to improve profitability, improve their product offerings, and keep growing at a fast rate.

Numerous Catalysts

NIO is doing everything it can to solve the problems it faces today. But complex problems require complex solutions, and it will take time for NIO to turn things around.

One such initiative is NIO announcing plans to develop its own battery pack in 2024. The company will produce an 800-volt pack and use a combination of in-home and outsourced batteries for its production needs.

This follows a prior announcement that NIO was investing $32.8 million to develop a lithium-ion battery lab in Shanghai. This is a great move on NIO's part, as lithium lies at the heart of battery technology and is becoming an expensive and scarce resource. EV makers that can find a way to optimize the use of lithium will have a great advantage over competitors moving forward.

Also, NIO’s founder William Li announced recently that the company would be launching a development (R&D) center for autonomous driving and artificial intelligence in Singapore, where NIO shares were recently listed.

On top of that, it’s worth mentioning that NIO is building another factory in Lu'an city, which will be completed in the first half of 2023. This park will make aluminum die-casting products, which will not only improve NIO’s margins but also help reduce emissions by 50%.

On the profitability front, NIO is doing its best to keep costs down by investing in better technology and increasing its production capacity, which will provide them with economies of scale.

On the more imminent growth part of the equation, we also have two recent catalysts that will help NIO maintain high levels of growth.

Firstly, the company has announced the launch of the ES7, a mid-large-sized SUV. What’s most notable about this launch is that it will be the first NIO vehicle to operate on the new NT 2.0 technology platform, which features level 4 autonomous driving. The ES7 could be a game-changer for NIO, and it should help boost sales starting in September.

Furthermore, NIO will also be getting help from the Chinese government. As one of the many measures introduced by the CCP to promote consumption after the pandemic, China will be increasing the quota for passenger cars. In China, the ownership of cars is limited, but this limit will be increased this year, which will be a catalyst for car manufacturers as a whole.

To this, we can add the fact that China will probably be expanding EV subsidies until next year.

In conclusion, we have numerous catalysts in play now that were not present a month ago, which is changing investor sentiment.

Early Signs of A Bottom

The events of the last month have propelled NIO shares higher since we reached a bottom at around $14. Investor sentiment looks to have shifted, COVID lockdowns in China are ending, the government is moving to increase consumption, and both NIO and the market as a whole have come down to much more attractive valuations.

We are beginning to see signs of a bottom, and this is also evident if we look at NIO’s price chart:

NIO Technical Analysis(Author's work)

As we can see from the chart above, NIO has now escaped the downtrend channel it has been in since November of last year. On top of that, we have seen very impulsive moves, with NIO rallying over 10% on numerous days. From an Elliott Wave perspective, we could point out 5 waves up, forming a diagonal.

Lastly, the RSI and MACD are also giving us bullish indications. On the 1D chart, the RSI has established a clear uptrend, but it is still far from overbought. The MACD has avoided a bullish crossover and gained momentum, which is also encouraging.

All in all, we are seeing early signs of a bottom. The sentiment is changing, which is backed up by the technical picture.

Valuation

EVs are essentially computers on wheels. That’s why comparisons and valuations with “traditional” auto manufacturers are inappropriate. EV makers are like tech companies, collecting data with every ride, and the value of this data is hard to calculate (though we know it is significant).

With that said, NIO currently trades at a P/S of 4, and this seems pretty low considering future growth prospects:

NIO Revenue Forecasts(Seeking Alpha)

By 2025 NIO could achieve between $23-$35 billion in revenue, implying a fwd P/S of 0.89. NIO’s average P/S since its inception has been close to 11, and Tesla currently trades at a P/S close to 8. NIO’s P/S should be closer to this in the long run, and even using a conservative figure of 6, NIO shares could easily double from here.

On top of that, investing in NIO at these prices comes with a considerable safety net. NIO has about 5$/share and is trading at only four times that. This is a company that is growing fast and is nowhere near bankruptcy. Realistically, the shares can’t go down much below recent lows.

Risks

Investing in NIO doesn’t come without risks. Chinese stocks are in a delicate situation right now, given geopolitical tensions and delisting fears, which I addressed in my last article.

As mentioned above, NIO favors a challenging macro environment and a competitive landscape, but I see evidence that the company can turn this around.

Final Thoughts

NIO Inc is one of the leading EV manufacturers in China, quickly becoming a global company. While recent results could be interpreted as weak, the company is making the right moves to improve profitability and keep growing. Furthermore, investors should remember that EVs are more than just cars, and the value of the data and technology in them is hard to calculate at this point; this is why Tesla and NIO command much higher valuation multiples.

While it is still early days, I believe the most likely scenario now is that the bottom is in.

","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
NIO: Results Are In, And Maybe So Is The Bottom
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nNIO: Results Are In, And Maybe So Is The Bottom\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2022-06-22 11:50 GMT+8 Seeking Alpha\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
SummaryNIO announced Q1 results and underwhelmed investors.Under the surface, many catalysts are in play for NIO, and this is why shares have rallied strongly in the last month. The bottom might be in,...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{"NIO":"蔚来","09866":"蔚来-SW","NIO.SI":"蔚来"},"source_url":"https://seekingalpha.com/article/4519556-nio-results-are-in-and-so-is-the-bottom?source=content_type%3Aall%7Cfirst_level_url%3Aportfolio%7Csection%3Aportfolio_content_unit%7Csection_asset%3Alatest%7Cline%3A9","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/e9f99090a1c2ed51c021029395664489","article_id":"1133497983","content_text":"SummaryNIO announced Q1 results and underwhelmed investors.Under the surface, many catalysts are in play for NIO, and this is why shares have rallied strongly in the last month. The bottom might be in, and NIO could appreciate over 300% in the coming months.Thesis SummaryNIO Inc. What’s most notable about this launch is that it will be the first NIO vehicle to operate on the new NT 2.0 technology platform, which features level 4 autonomous driving. The ES7 could be a game-changer for NIO, and it should help boost sales starting in September.Furthermore, NIO will also be getting help from the Chinese government. As one of the many measures introduced by the CCP to promote consumption after the pandemic, China will be increasing the quota for passenger cars. In China, the ownership of cars is limited, but this limit will be increased this year, which will be a catalyst for car manufacturers as a whole. To this, we can add the fact that China will probably be expanding EV subsidies until next year.In conclusion, we have numerous catalysts in play now that were not present a month ago, which is changing investor sentiment.Early Signs of A BottomThe events of the last month have propelled NIO shares higher since we reached a bottom at around $14. Investor sentiment looks to have shifted, COVID lockdowns in China are ending, the government is moving to increase consumption, and both NIO and the market as a whole have come down to much more attractive valuations. We are beginning to see signs of a bottom, and this is also evident if we look at NIO’s price chart:NIO Technical Analysis(Author's work)As we can see from the chart above, NIO has now escaped the downtrend channel it has been in since November of last year. On top of that, we have seen very impulsive moves, with NIO rallying over 10% on numerous days. From an Elliott Wave perspective, we could point out 5 waves up, forming a diagonal.Lastly, the RSI and MACD are also giving us bullish indications. On the 1D chart, the RSI has established a clear uptrend, but it is still far from overbought. The MACD has avoided a bullish crossover and gained momentum, which is also encouraging. All in all, we are seeing early signs of a bottom. The sentiment is changing, which is backed up by the technical picture.ValuationEVs are essentially computers on wheels. That’s why comparisons and valuations with “traditional” auto manufacturers are inappropriate. EV makers are like tech companies, collecting data with every ride, and the value of this data is hard to calculate (though we know it is significant). With that said, NIO currently trades at a P/S of 4, and this seems pretty low considering future growth prospects:NIO Revenue Forecasts(Seeking Alpha)By 2025 NIO could achieve between $23-$35 billion in revenue, implying a fwd P/S of 0.89. NIO’s average P/S since its inception has been close to 11, and Tesla currently trades at a P/S close to 8. NIO’s P/S should be closer to this in the long run, and even using a conservative figure of 6, NIO shares could easily double from here.On top of that, investing in NIO at these prices comes with a considerable safety net. NIO has about 5$/share and is trading at only four times that. This is a company that is growing fast and is nowhere near bankruptcy. Realistically, the shares can’t go down much below recent lows.RisksInvesting in NIO doesn’t come without risks. Chinese stocks are in a delicate situation right now, given geopolitical tensions and delisting fears, which I addressed in my last article. As mentioned above, NIO favors a challenging macro environment and a competitive landscape, but I see evidence that the company can turn this around.Final ThoughtsNIO Inc is one of the leading EV manufacturers in China, quickly becoming a global company. While it is still early days, I believe the most likely scenario now is that the bottom is in.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":18,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9053427784,"gmtCreate":1654575318048,"gmtModify":1676535471995,"author":{"id":"4109909455489530","authorId":"4109909455489530","name":"Hosay_hosay","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/b228fbc5c071c4bc7e948619f9ff7028","crmLevel":6,"crmLevelSwitch":0},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Buy buy buy 😊😊😊","listText":"Buy buy buy 😊😊😊","text":"Buy buy buy 😊😊😊","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":5,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9053427784","repostId":"2241092396","repostType":2,"repost":{"id":"2241092396","pubTimestamp":1654572049,"share":"https://www.laohu8.com/m/news/2241092396?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2022-06-07 11:20","market":"us","language":"en","title":"NIO Stock Is Under the Microscope Ahead of Earnings; Here’s What to Expect","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2241092396","media":"TipRanks","summary":"Most companies have already reported Q1 earnings, although some names have yet to deliver the quarte","content":"
\n
Most companies have already reported Q1 earnings, although some names have yet to deliver the quarter’s financials. Nio (NIO) is one of those but before the market kicks into action on Thursday (June 9), the Chinese EV maker will step up to the earnings plate. As deliveries have already been announced for the quarter (NIO delivered 25,768 vehicles in Q1), Deutsche Bank analyst Edison Yu is not anticipating any big surprises, with the analyst expecting an “in-line” display. As such, attention will turn to the company’s outlook for Q2 and any commentary regarding the state of the supply chain following Shanghai’s reopening from the recent Covid lockdown. For Q2, Yu is calling for a slight sequential drop to 24,000 deliveries, although that figure does suggest a “material sequential improvement” from May's ~7,000 deliveries as Yu expects to see significant month-over-month volume improvement in June. However, given the “lower volumes and imbalance within the order book (i.e., orders placed before price hike being fulfilled with components procured at newly elevated levels),” Yu also anticipates gross margins will drop sequentially. The good news, though, is that it should represent the “trough” for the year and with the reopening, NIO can “finally get back on track with its product super cycle this year.”Having launched the ET7 at the end of March, Yu expects the ES7 SUV will be “officially unveiled” later in the month, while 2022 versions of the ES6, EC6, and ES8 - all boasting infotainment system upgrades - should also be revealed. All told, Yu has lowered his 2022E deliveries estimate by 10,000 to 160,000, although the analyst keeps his 2023 forecast intact - at 320,000. The figure suggests deliveries will double year-over-year.So, down to business, what does it all mean for investors? Yu maintained a Buy rating on NIO shares, but to “account for the broader de-rating in growth stocks,” the price target is lowered from $50 to $45. Nevertheless, the new figure still makes room for 12-month growth of a generous 135%. It’s not often that the analysts all agree on a stock, so when it does happen, take note. NIO’s Strong Buy consensus rating is based on a unanimous 13 Buys. The stock’s $41.48 average price target is only slightly below Yu’s objective and set to generate returns of ~116% in the year ahead.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":10,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9905035838,"gmtCreate":1659765411328,"gmtModify":1703766416077,"author":{"id":"4109909455489530","authorId":"4109909455489530","name":"Hosay_hosay","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/b228fbc5c071c4bc7e948619f9ff7028","crmLevel":6,"crmLevelSwitch":0},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Coinbase will rally soon or later with this partnership, so buy and keep is the best option now 😊😊","listText":"Coinbase will rally soon or later with this partnership, so buy and keep is the best option now 😊😊","text":"Coinbase will rally soon or later with this partnership, so buy and keep is the best option now 😊😊","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":4,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9905035838","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":110,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[{"author":{"id":"3559581955535845","authorId":"3559581955535845","name":"koolgal","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/c05274d88ffc0434623e57350c52c70a","crmLevel":6,"crmLevelSwitch":1},"content":"Excellent idea😍😍😍","text":"Excellent idea😍😍😍","html":"Excellent idea😍😍😍"}],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":186021768167520,"gmtCreate":1686454746870,"gmtModify":1686454750835,"author":{"id":"4109909455489530","authorId":"4109909455489530","name":"Hosay_hosay","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/b228fbc5c071c4bc7e948619f9ff7028","crmLevel":6,"crmLevelSwitch":0},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Hard to play [LOL] [LOL] ","listText":"Hard to play [LOL] [LOL] ","text":"Hard to play [LOL] [LOL]","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":2,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/186021768167520","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":239,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9958800819,"gmtCreate":1673670446132,"gmtModify":1676538873528,"author":{"id":"4109909455489530","authorId":"4109909455489530","name":"Hosay_hosay","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/b228fbc5c071c4bc7e948619f9ff7028","crmLevel":6,"crmLevelSwitch":0},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Thailand 😅😅😅","listText":"Thailand 😅😅😅","text":"Thailand 😅😅😅","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":7,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9958800819","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":67,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9958909391,"gmtCreate":1673601229314,"gmtModify":1676538862776,"author":{"id":"4109909455489530","authorId":"4109909455489530","name":"Hosay_hosay","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/b228fbc5c071c4bc7e948619f9ff7028","crmLevel":6,"crmLevelSwitch":0},"themes":[],"htmlText":"[Cool] [Cool] [Happy] [Happy] ","listText":"[Cool] [Cool] [Happy] [Happy] ","text":"[Cool] [Cool] [Happy] [Happy]","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":7,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9958909391","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":114,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9012827129,"gmtCreate":1649307208346,"gmtModify":1676534489661,"author":{"id":"4109909455489530","authorId":"4109909455489530","name":"Hosay_hosay","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/b228fbc5c071c4bc7e948619f9ff7028","crmLevel":6,"crmLevelSwitch":0},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Good write up, thank you for it 😊","listText":"Good write up, thank you for it 😊","text":"Good write up, thank you for it 😊","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":7,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9012827129","repostId":"2225568035","repostType":2,"repost":{"id":"2225568035","pubTimestamp":1649289910,"share":"https://www.laohu8.com/m/news/2225568035?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2022-04-07 08:05","market":"us","language":"en","title":"3 COVID-19 Stocks With Monster Upside of Up to 355%, According to Wall Street","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=2225568035","media":"Motley Fool","summary":"Select analysts foresee these coronavirus stocks rocketing higher by 246% to 355% over the next year.","content":"

For more than two years, the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has turned the world upside-down. According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 486 million cases of COVID-19 had been reported, as of April 1, 2022, leading to over 6.1 million cumulative deaths. Nearly 973,000 of those deaths have occurred in the United States.

Even though the worst of the pandemic appears to be in the rearview mirror, there's a real likelihood that COVID-19 becomes an endemic illness. This means initial inoculation campaigns, booster shots, and research into combination vaccines, is almost certain to continue -- and Wall Street knows it.

Based on the highest issued price targets from Wall Street analysts, the following three COVID-19 stocks offer monster upside over the next 12 months ranging from a "low" of 246% to as much as 355%.

Novavax: Implied upside of 257%

The first COVID-19 play that offers drool-worthy upside, at least according to one Wall Street analyst, is biotech stock Novavax ( NVAX -13.36% ). Despite a $50 price-target reduction in February, B. Riley analyst Mayank Mamtani still believes Novavax can reach $265 a share. This represents a cool 257% upside from where shares ended last week.

Mamtani's aggressive price target is based on a few factors. For instance, he believes that concerns over Novavax's near-term manufacturing struggles are overblown. Mamtani explained months ago that Novavax was nearing its monthly manufacturing target of around 150 million doses, and would likely be exporting more than 100 million monthly doses out of India, where it's working with the Serum Institute of India to produce NVX-CoV2373 vaccines.

Mamtani also views the U.S. and European Union as core long-term sales opportunities for Novavax. Even though a substantial percentage of the population in these developed markets have already received their initial inoculations, the mutability of the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19 offers recurring revenue opportunities via boosters and combination vaccines. Novavax is one of a handful of companies currently developing a combination influenza/COVID-19 vaccine.

Something else to consider is that NVX-CoV2373 has been among the most effective vaccine candidates. Among U.S. and EU treatments that have received approval or emergency-use authorization (EUA), only three have managed to reach the 90% vaccine efficacy (VE) plateau. Novavax is one of those three, with the company's large-scale study in the U.S./Mexico (announced in June 2021) hitting a 90.4% VE. This should allow Novavax to easily supplant other COVID-19 vaccines with lower VEs, such as those from Johnson & Johnson and AstraZeneca.

Based on Wall Street's worst-case scenario for 2022, Novavax looks to be on track for a little over $4 billion in sales (the company recorded $1.15 billion in revenue last year) and over $13 in earnings per share. This would put Novavax's stock at less than six times Wall Street's most-pessimistic profit forecast in 2022.

While I don't expect Mamtani's lofty price target to hit over the next 12 months, I do believe $265 remains in the picture down the line if Novavax continues to execute and innovate.

Vaxart: Implied upside of 246%

A second COVID-19 stock that offers monster upside over the next 12 months is clinical-stage drug developer Vaxart. Analyst Yasmeen Rahimi of Piper Sandler holds the high-water price target on Vaxart of $18 a share. If this figure were to become a reality, shareholders would enjoy a 246% gain from where Vaxart's stock ended this past week.

Rahimi's optimism is primarily tied to Vaxart's proprietary drug development technology known as "Vector-Adjuvant-Antigen Standardized Technology," or VAAST. While traditional vaccines aim to produce a systemic response, VAAST is intended to produce both a systemic and mucosal response. This dual approach is believed to provide better protection against airborne viruses. In Rahimi's view, VAAST's success has been demonstrated in previous clinical trials, which somewhat de-risks Vaxart's development platform.

Another unique aspect of Vaxart's pipeline is that its COVID-19 candidate is an oral tablet and not a jab in the arm. An effective oral COVID-19 treatment would completely change the game globally. It would make distribution substantially easier (i.e., no medical professionals needed to administer shots), and there's a good likelihood that people would be more willing to swallow a pill than receive a vaccine.

Last year, early stage data from Vaxart's COVID-19 oral treatment demonstrated mixed results. Although it did generate an immune response, the level of neutralizing antibodies observed in clinical trials was notably lower than in patients who'd received a traditional COVID-19 vaccine.

Following this study, Vaxart ran a preclinical trial specifically targeting the S-protein, which is involved in receptor viral attachment and entry into host cells. The initial results of this study, which were released in late February, demonstrated "robust neutralizing antibody responses in mucosal sites" for non-human primates.

Though these very early stage results are encouraging, Vaxart's oral S-only COVID-19 candidate, as well as its remaining pipeline, looks to be a long ways off from generating any recurring revenue. This makes Rahimi's $18 price target unlikely to be hit in 12 months, if ever.

Ocugen: Implied upside of 355%

However, the crème-de-la-crème of upside opportunity among COVID-19 stocks happens to be small-cap clinical-stage biotech company Ocugen. If Robert LeBoyer of Noble Financial is correct with his price target of $15 a share for Ocugen, investors would enjoy a 355% ride higher over the coming 12 months.

Since this list is all about COVID-19 stocks, it shouldn't be a surprise that LeBoyer's optimism has almost everything to do with Covaxin, which is an experimental COVID-19 vaccine Ocugen has commercially licensed from India's Bharat Biotech.

In 2021, Bharat Biotech conducted a large-scale study involving Covaxin with 25,800 participants in India. This clinical trial produced a VE of 78% that ultimately was the basis for Covaxin getting the green light from the WHO. In LeBoyer's view, Covaxin offers competitive advantages over other available COVID-19 vaccines in North America.

But there's a really big asterisk that investors need to be aware of. Ocugen's commercial licensing of Covaxin only pertains to the U.S. and Canada. Covaxin could theoretically be approved for use in every market around the world except the U.S. and Canada, and Ocugen wouldn't see a dime. According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 486 million cases of COVID-19 had been reported, as of April 1, 2022, leading to over 6.1 million cumulative deaths. Nearly 973,000 of those deaths have occurred in the United States.Even though the worst of the pandemic appears to be in the rearview mirror, there's a real likelihood that COVID-19 becomes an endemic illness. This means initial inoculation campaigns, booster shots, and research into combination vaccines, is almost certain to continue -- and Wall Street knows it.Based on the highest issued price targets from Wall Street analysts, the following three COVID-19 stocks offer monster upside over the next 12 months ranging from a \"low\" of 246% to as much as 355%.Novavax: Implied upside of 257%The first COVID-19 play that offers drool-worthy upside, at least according to one Wall Street analyst, is biotech stock Novavax ( NVAX -13.36% ). Despite a $50 price-target reduction in February, B. Riley analyst Mayank Mamtani still believes Novavax can reach $265 a share. This represents a cool 257% upside from where shares ended last week.Mamtani's aggressive price target is based on a few factors. For instance, he believes that concerns over Novavax's near-term manufacturing struggles are overblown. Mamtani explained months ago that Novavax was nearing its monthly manufacturing target of around 150 million doses, and would likely be exporting more than 100 million monthly doses out of India, where it's working with the Serum Institute of India to produce NVX-CoV2373 vaccines.Mamtani also views the U.S. and European Union as core long-term sales opportunities for Novavax. Even though a substantial percentage of the population in these developed markets have already received their initial inoculations, the mutability of the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19 offers recurring revenue opportunities via boosters and combination vaccines. Novavax is one of a handful of companies currently developing a combination influenza/COVID-19 vaccine.Something else to consider is that NVX-CoV2373 has been among the most effective vaccine candidates. Among U.S. and EU treatments that have received approval or emergency-use authorization (EUA), only three have managed to reach the 90% vaccine efficacy (VE) plateau. Novavax is one of those three, with the company's large-scale study in the U.S./Mexico (announced in June 2021) hitting a 90.4% VE. This should allow Novavax to easily supplant other COVID-19 vaccines with lower VEs, such as those from Johnson & Johnson and AstraZeneca.Based on Wall Street's worst-case scenario for 2022, Novavax looks to be on track for a little over $4 billion in sales (the company recorded $1.15 billion in revenue last year) and over $13 in earnings per share. This would put Novavax's stock at less than six times Wall Street's most-pessimistic profit forecast in 2022.While I don't expect Mamtani's lofty price target to hit over the next 12 months, I do believe $265 remains in the picture down the line if Novavax continues to execute and innovate.Vaxart: Implied upside of 246%A second COVID-19 stock that offers monster upside over the next 12 months is clinical-stage drug developer Vaxart. Analyst Yasmeen Rahimi of Piper Sandler holds the high-water price target on Vaxart of $18 a share. If this figure were to become a reality, shareholders would enjoy a 246% gain from where Vaxart's stock ended this past week.Rahimi's optimism is primarily tied to Vaxart's proprietary drug development technology known as \"Vector-Adjuvant-Antigen Standardized Technology,\" or VAAST. While traditional vaccines aim to produce a systemic response, VAAST is intended to produce both a systemic and mucosal response. This dual approach is believed to provide better protection against airborne viruses. In Rahimi's view, VAAST's success has been demonstrated in previous clinical trials, which somewhat de-risks Vaxart's development platform.Another unique aspect of Vaxart's pipeline is that its COVID-19 candidate is an oral tablet and not a jab in the arm. An effective oral COVID-19 treatment would completely change the game globally. It would make distribution substantially easier (i.e., no medical professionals needed to administer shots), and there's a good likelihood that people would be more willing to swallow a pill than receive a vaccine.Last year, early stage data from Vaxart's COVID-19 oral treatment demonstrated mixed results. Although it did generate an immune response, the level of neutralizing antibodies observed in clinical trials was notably lower than in patients who'd received a traditional COVID-19 vaccine.Following this study, Vaxart ran a preclinical trial specifically targeting the S-protein, which is involved in receptor viral attachment and entry into host cells. The initial results of this study, which were released in late February, demonstrated \"robust neutralizing antibody responses in mucosal sites\" for non-human primates.Though these very early stage results are encouraging, Vaxart's oral S-only COVID-19 candidate, as well as its remaining pipeline, looks to be a long ways off from generating any recurring revenue. This makes Rahimi's $18 price target unlikely to be hit in 12 months, if ever.Ocugen: Implied upside of 355%However, the crème-de-la-crème of upside opportunity among COVID-19 stocks happens to be small-cap clinical-stage biotech company Ocugen. If Robert LeBoyer of Noble Financial is correct with his price target of $15 a share for Ocugen, investors would enjoy a 355% ride higher over the coming 12 months.Since this list is all about COVID-19 stocks, it shouldn't be a surprise that LeBoyer's optimism has almost everything to do with Covaxin, which is an experimental COVID-19 vaccine Ocugen has commercially licensed from India's Bharat Biotech. While the U.S. and Canada are generally lucrative markets for brand-name drugs, both countries have already invested heavily in COVID-19 treatments and may not have room on pharmacy shelves for a vaccine that produced \"only\" a 78% VE.The other big problem for Ocugen is that its quick path to revenue was yanked away by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) one month earlier. On March 4, the FDA declined Ocugen's EUA request for pediatric patients aged 2 to 18. This means Covaxin's U.S. audience will only be adults, and Covaxin will have to go through the standard (i.e., slower) route of drug approval with the FDA.Although Ocugen's eye-disease-related pipeline could one day be worthwhile, it's hard to see this company getting anywhere near $15 with minimal use for Covaxin in the U.S. and Canada.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":15,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9925067250,"gmtCreate":1671874633770,"gmtModify":1676538606211,"author":{"id":"4109909455489530","authorId":"4109909455489530","name":"Hosay_hosay","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/b228fbc5c071c4bc7e948619f9ff7028","crmLevel":6,"crmLevelSwitch":0},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Singaore 🎉🎉🎉🤪🤪🤪","listText":"Singaore 🎉🎉🎉🤪🤪🤪","text":"Singaore 🎉🎉🎉🤪🤪🤪","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":5,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://ttm.financial/post/9925067250","isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":63,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":9908102003,"gmtCreate":1659330018703,"gmtModify":1676536288338,"author":{"id":"4109909455489530","authorId":"4109909455489530","name":"Hosay_hosay","avatar":"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/b228fbc5c071c4bc7e948619f9ff7028","crmLevel":6,"crmLevelSwitch":0},"themes":[],"htmlText":"$Tesla Motors(TSLA)$Tesla so far did not disappoint alot of people, including me. I will try to be brief this time. Of course, my previous Sell thesis for the general market has not changed for the last few days. It has only got stronger, and now you find out why.

Let us first recall what exactly has been the fuel for the rally we have experienced since the beginning of this year. Earlier, I suggested that there were several reasons for such a strong, unidirectional upward movement, including:

1) the expectation of a more dovish stance from the Fed;

2) the growing liquidity in the capital markets;

3) the hype and the Main/Wall Streets' reflections on how AI should change the world;

4) rather weak consequences after the collapse of SVB and some other banks;

5) positive expectations from future EPS figures [we have seen a lot of upward revisions lately].

After identifying these reasons for myself, I tried to relate them to reality and understand how sustainably long they can fuel this rally. That said, of course, these factors cannot be ignored - at the very least, this can lead to opportunity costs or a lot of pain if you are a short seller. But looking at the dynamics of the strength of these factors is critical, in my opinion. And this is where several questions should arise for those who continue to view these factors with great bullish hope. Let's go in order.

Why did the markets - S&P 500 (SPY) (SPX) (SP500) - take a break recently after their breathtaking rise? The thing is that the first of the above factors began to weaken. In his testimony before the House Financial Services Committee, Mr. Powell suggested that interest rates needed to rise to address U.S. economic growth and contain price pressures. He reiterated the Fed's determination to bring inflation back down to its 2% target and indicated that further rate hikes could be expected by the end of the year [against the previous hope-driven consensus]. He noted, however, that lowering inflation may require a period of below-average growth and some softening of labor market conditions.

Okay, but what about liquidity? As far as I can see, the second driver - liquidity - started to weaken in from of our eyes, breaking the usual pattern of "liquidity down - markets down," because the markets have not responded properly to this to date.

Financial Times

As Morgan Stanley's Mike Wilson recently noted [proprietary source], M2 particularly stands out among the bank's favorite liquidity measures. In October 2022, global M2 reached its lowest point, signaling a potential turning point for the markets. As anticipated, this led to a rally in stocks. However, it's now important to acknowledge that the current performance of the S&P 500 seems to have surpassed its historical correlation with global M2:

Morgan Stanley [June 20, 2023 - proprietary source]

Furthermore, Mr. Wilson notes that while the bailout of depositors by the Fed and the FDIC in March can't be considered a direct monetary stimulus, it did inject liquidity into the financial system. This injection of liquidity enabled banks to maintain their credit extension activities. However, according to Morgan Stanley's fixed income strategists, the issuance of Treasury bills and notes over the next 6 months will reach a substantial sum of $1.2 trillion. It's expected that a significant portion of this amount, approximately $500 billion, will be funded by drawing down bank reserves. It is important to consider the historical implications of such reserve drawdowns, as the equity market has typically not performed well in their aftermath:

Morgan Stanley [June 20, 2023 - proprietary source]

As we can see from the recent inflows to money market instruments, the problems many banks are having with deposits can only get worse in the foreseeable future.

BofA [June 2023 - proprietary source]

If so much money is flowing into the money market, it is not happening out of thin air, but is, in my opinion, primarily due to the "bleeding" of bank deposits. Therefore, it seems to me that the 4th driver I listed above is also quite weak at the moment.

What about AI and LLM models that are supposed to miraculously turn our lives upside down? As I mentioned earlier, this hype has created a kind of bubble whose end is impossible to time. Again, I am not going to try to do that. But - and I think this is a very important point - it seems to me that the interest of the crowd is showing the first signs of weakening. One of the clearest signs of this is Google searches on the relevant topics, which started to drop sharply after peaking in April/May. We have already seen something similar in 2022 in the example of another technological trend:

Google Trends

I am in no way comparing the applicability of LLM models to NFTs - they are completely different animals. Nor am I saying that LLMs will not have a positive impact on the economy. Of course, that's not the case. But aside from that effect, there are some other things that the stock market is reluctant to acknowledge, focusing only on the positive. Obviously, the waning of mass interest in ChatGPT should lead to a logical disillusionment.

And the last driver, which also seems rather weak to me now, is the EPS upward revisions. I wrote about this last time, and too little time has passed since then for anything to change radically. I believe in Morgan Stanley's econometric calculations, which have already proven their effectiveness in 2022. According to the bank's model, we are waiting for a strong downward, not upward, revaluation of EPS figures for S&P 500 companies. So I think the risks to the bulls will continue to escalate with the multiple expansion, which, by the way, almost fully explains the large tech rally YTD:

Shared by @MichaelKantro on Twitter [June 17, 2023]

Your Takeaway

Again, I must warn you about the risks of my next Sell thesis. First, there is a huge amount of subjectivity in what you have just read. Second, I could be wrong about the overall effect of AI on the stock market - perhaps the bubble I see before me is not a bubble. I will try to be brief this time. Of course, my previous Sell thesis for the general market has not changed for the last few days. It has only got stronger, and now you find out why.Let us first recall what exactly has been the fuel for the rally we have experienced since the beginning of this year. Earlier, I suggested that there were several reasons for such a strong, unidirectional upward movement, including:1) the expectation of a more dovish stance from the Fed;2) the growing liquidity in the capital markets;3) the hype and the Main/Wall Streets' reflections on how AI should change the world;4) rather weak consequences after the collapse of SVB and some other banks;5) positive expectations from future EPS figures [we have seen a lot of upward revisions lately].After identifying these reasons for myself, I tried to relate them to reality and understand how sustainably long they can fuel this rally. He noted, however, that lowering inflation may require a period of below-average growth and some softening of labor market conditions.Okay, but what about liquidity? As far as I can see, the second driver - liquidity - started to weaken in from of our eyes, breaking the usual pattern of \"liquidity down - markets down,\" because the markets have not responded properly to this to date.Financial TimesAs Morgan Stanley's Mike Wilson recently noted [proprietary source], M2 particularly stands out among the bank's favorite liquidity measures. In October 2022, global M2 reached its lowest point, signaling a potential turning point for the markets. As anticipated, this led to a rally in stocks. However, it's now important to acknowledge that the current performance of the S&P 500 seems to have surpassed its historical correlation with global M2:Morgan Stanley [June 20, 2023 - proprietary source]Furthermore, Mr. It is important to consider the historical implications of such reserve drawdowns, as the equity market has typically not performed well in their aftermath:Morgan Stanley [June 20, 2023 - proprietary source]As we can see from the recent inflows to money market instruments, the problems many banks are having with deposits can only get worse in the foreseeable future.BofA [June 2023 - proprietary source]If so much money is flowing into the money market, it is not happening out of thin air, but is, in my opinion, primarily due to the \"bleeding\" of bank deposits. We have already seen something similar in 2022 in the example of another technological trend:Google TrendsI am in no way comparing the applicability of LLM models to NFTs - they are completely different animals. So I think the risks to the bulls will continue to escalate with the multiple expansion, which, by the way, almost fully explains the large tech rally YTD:Shared by @MichaelKantro on Twitter [June 17, 2023]Your TakeawayAgain, I must warn you about the risks of my next Sell thesis. First, there is a huge amount of subjectivity in what you have just read. Second, I could be wrong about the overall effect of AI on the stock market - perhaps the bubble I see before me is not a bubble. Third, the momentum of the rally is still strong, and the recent weakness does not mean anything yet. I recommend you do your own due diligence before making any investment decisions. I definitely would not short the market - it's not for me.But despite the upside risks, I believe that the actual potential upside for the rally looks is too small to date.
