Inflation and interest rates are on the rise, but Google&#39;s profit margins provide plenty of cushion. So does $125 billion in net cash and short-term investments, which Alphabet is using to repurchase shares.</p><p>Working from a position of technological and financial strength also gives Alphabet the ability to invest in things like its Waymo subsidiary. Self-driving cars could reshape the global economy, and Waymo is a leader in this bleeding-edge technology. Trading for just 22 times trailing-12-month free cash flow, Alphabet is a value right now -- especially when considering its long-term potential.</p><h2>Nvidia: The top platform for building AI</h2><p>I believe Nvidia will be the next business to join the trillion-dollar club: that exclusive group of stocks (Alphabet included) with a market cap of at least $1 trillion. Currently valued at $445 billion, the semiconductor giant is already almost halfway there.</p><p>Nvidia&#39;s GPUs, historically the realm of high-end video game PCs, are finding use in data centers creating and running artificial intelligence software. AI is in the early stages of deployment, just now reaching that convergence of usefulness and affordability that makes it compelling for industries of all sorts. Building on its lead here, Nvidia has launched new chip types outside of GPUs to address other parts of the modern business data center.</p><p>If its impressive hardware weren&#39;t enough, Nvidia is also early on in developing a cloud-based software business too. AI software won&#39;t only help Nvidia sustain its growth momentum but could also lift profit margins higher as well. This is a premium-priced stock at 57 times trailing 12-month free cash flow, but this is a great company to buy and hold for the next decade if you&#39;re looking for a way to bet on the AI industry.</p><h2>Block: A depressed fintech name with international potential</h2><p>Block (formerly Square) was a high-flying financial technology leader just a year ago. Now, it trades for just over seven times enterprise value (just over $35 billion as of this writing) to trailing-12-month gross profit ($4.75 billion). The market is feeling particularly ho-hum on Block.</p><p>The punishment isn&#39;t completely unwarranted. Block is trying to develop the <b>Bitcoin </b>blockchain network, and it isn&#39;t clear if Bitcoin will ever have a future as a means of enabling transactions on the internet. It also paid a pretty penny for buy-now-pay-later company Afterpay early this year, and it will take time to see if the combined fintechs are worth more together than they would have been on their own.</p><p>Personally, though, I like Block&#39;s plan of attack with Afterpay. Block needs a way to connect its Square merchant services ecosystem with the more consumer-facing Cash App. Afterpay could act as the rails between the two and create a truly two-sided network that keeps merchants and individuals highly engaged -- and makes Block more profitable over time. And at 39 times trailing-12-month free cash flow, Block&#39;s growth potential looks severely underappreciated right now.</p><h2>Twilio: Communications head for the cloud</h2><p>The pandemic accelerated large organizations&#39; migration to the cloud, which was especially apparent with cloud-based communications tools. <b>Zoom Video Communications </b>got all the early attention, but Twilio has been the more enduring growth story as Zoom&#39;s expansion has decelerated.</p><p>Twilio&#39;s secret is it has a wide range of tools available for businesses to integrate into their operations -- from text and email to website chatbots to internet-based phone and video calling. Currently valued at $445 billion, the semiconductor giant is already almost halfway there.Nvidia's GPUs, historically the realm of high-end video game PCs, are finding use in data centers creating and running artificial intelligence software. AI is in the early stages of deployment, just now reaching that convergence of usefulness and affordability that makes it compelling for industries of all sorts. Building on its lead here, Nvidia has launched new chip types outside of GPUs to address other parts of the modern business data center.If its impressive hardware weren't enough, Nvidia is also early on in developing a cloud-based software business too. AI software won't only help Nvidia sustain its growth momentum but could also lift profit margins higher as well. This is a premium-priced stock at 57 times trailing 12-month free cash flow, but this is a great company to buy and hold for the next decade if you're looking for a way to bet on the AI industry.Block: A depressed fintech name with international potentialBlock (formerly Square) was a high-flying financial technology leader just a year ago. Now, it trades for just over seven times enterprise value (just over $35 billion as of this writing) to trailing-12-month gross profit ($4.75 billion). The market is feeling particularly ho-hum on Block.The punishment isn't completely unwarranted. Block is trying to develop the Bitcoin blockchain network, and it isn't clear if Bitcoin will ever have a future as a means of enabling transactions on the internet. It also paid a pretty penny for buy-now-pay-later company Afterpay early this year, and it will take time to see if the combined fintechs are worth more together than they would have been on their own.Personally, though, I like Block's plan of attack with Afterpay. Block needs a way to connect its Square merchant services ecosystem with the more consumer-facing Cash App. Afterpay could act as the rails between the two and create a truly two-sided network that keeps merchants and individuals highly engaged -- and makes Block more profitable over time. And at 39 times trailing-12-month free cash flow, Block's growth potential looks severely underappreciated right now.Twilio: Communications head for the cloudThe pandemic accelerated large organizations' migration to the cloud, which was especially apparent with cloud-based communications tools. The most recent update included the latest 5G technology, spurring higher-than-average upgrades from older models.</p><p>Moreover, the popularity of the iPhone has allowed Apple to build a robust services business that complements the pioneering smartphone. The company boasts a whopping 825 million service subscribers, an increase of 165 million from last year. Its lineup includes Apple Music, Apple TV+, iCloud, Apple Fitness, and more. Note the gross margin on its services segment is 72.6%, while that of its products is 36.4%.</p><p>Those 825 million subscribers are not only providing high-margin revenue to Apple, but are also prime candidates to buy its latest products. Once customers enter the Apple ecosystem and customize their products and services to their liking, they&#39;ll likely stick around long term.</p><h2>Bear case: Heavy dependence on iPhone</h2><p>The bear case concedes that Apple is a tremendously successful innovator with decades of proof. Additionally, it’s a leading Chinese asset, meaning that Alibaba’s been under excess beta sensitivity during the recent Chinese bear market.However, the tides seem to have changed. Alibaba stock has found a new investor base as market participants seek an alternative habitat amid a U.S. bear market. For instance, while the S&P 500 (SPX) has dipped by more than 6% during the past month, Alibaba has surged by an excess of 16%.From a non-statistical viewpoint, Alibaba has a commercial profile that would leave many in awe. The company’s model takes advantage of goods arbitrage between the developed nations and global midstream suppliers, which is yet to be challenged.Furthermore, Alibaba’s local presence is phenomenal, as its array of acquisitions has allowed it to build a vertical and horizontal business model that focuses on speed and efficiency.Also, the stock is relatively undervalued. The most recent update included the latest 5G technology, spurring higher-than-average upgrades from older models.</p><p>Moreover, the popularity of the iPhone has allowed Apple to build a robust services business that complements the pioneering smartphone. The company boasts a whopping 825 million service subscribers, an increase of 165 million from last year. Its lineup includes Apple Music, Apple TV+, iCloud, Apple Fitness, and more. Note the gross margin on its services segment is 72.6%, while that of its products is 36.4%.</p><p>Those 825 million subscribers are not only providing high-margin revenue to Apple, but are also prime candidates to buy its latest products. Once customers enter the Apple ecosystem and customize their products and services to their liking, they&#39;ll likely stick around long term.</p><h2>Bear case: Heavy dependence on iPhone</h2><p>The bear case concedes that Apple is a tremendously successful innovator with decades of proof. However, the case against investing in Apple centers around its iPhone dependence. While Apple has done an excellent job creating sought-after consumer electronics like the iPod, iPad, AirPods, Apple Watch, etc., it&#39;s still largely dependent on the iPhone.</p><p>In its most recent quarter, the iPhone comprised 52% of the company&#39;s overall sales. That&#39;s not even including all the attachments that go along with it. The risk is that if Apple doesn&#39;t continue its iPhone success, revenue growth could stall or even reverse. start;\">Let’s break down each component of the banks’ earnings and financial metrics to see which bank qualifies as the best buy.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\"><strong>Note:</strong> UOB only disclosed its second half of 2024 (2H 2024) metrics while both DBS and OCBC disclosed quarterly metrics.</p><h2 id=\"h-financials\" style=\"text-align: start;\">Financials</h2><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/627ba4b4a94effbc7499da7a1ff96318\" alt=\"Source: Banks’ 2024 earnings reports\" title=\"Source: Banks’ 2024 earnings income and profits.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">DBS is the standout winner here with a double-digit, 10.5% year-on-year increase in its total income.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">The strong result was because of a 5% year-on-year improvement in DBS’s net interest income to S$15 billion.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">For OCBC, the year-on-year increase in its NII was just 1% while UOB saw flat NII for 2024.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">All three banks, however, posted healthy year-on-year growth in their fee income.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">In terms of net profit, DBS saw the highest year-on-year increase of the three banks at 12.2%.</p><h2 id=\"h-winner-dbs\" style=\"text-align: start;\">Winner: DBS</h2><h2 id=\"h-net-interest-margins-nims-and-loan-books\" style=\"text-align: start;\">Net interest margins (NIMs) and loan books</h2><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/0df817d33a6ab97c99ec1aa5e7c67204\" alt=\"Source: Banks’ 2024 earnings reports\" title=\"Source: Banks’ 2024 earnings reports\" tg-width=\"846\" tg-height=\"477\"/><span>Source: Banks’ 2024 earnings reports</span></p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">Next, we move on to each bank’s NIM, which is a measure of the spread between a bank’s deposit rate and its lending rate.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">In short, a larger NIM means that the bank is earning a wider spread, which in turn benefits its NII.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">We also take a look at whether each bank managed to grow its loan book.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">OCBC has the highest NIM of the three banks at 2.2% for 2024, and its NIM also equalled DBS for 4Q 2024 at 2.15%.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">However, DBS saw the gentlest year-on-year decline in its NIM at just 0.02 percentage points (ppt) for 2024, compared to UOB’s 0.06 ppt and OCBC’s 0.08 ppt.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">OCBC also saw a sharp year-on-year fall in its 4Q 2024 NIM of 0.14 ppt.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">As for loan growth, OCBC registered the highest loan growth at 7.6% year on year while DBS saw the smallest at just 3.5%.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">Combining all the facts, OCBC still comes out ahead with the highest NIM for 2024 and the best year-on-year loan growth.</p><h2 id=\"h-winner-ocbc\" style=\"text-align: start;\">Winner: OCBC</h2><h2 id=\"h-cost-to-income-ratio-cir\" style=\"text-align: start;\">Cost-to-income ratio (CIR)</h2><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/d4c21383e445bc7d1ed9a60c5eaeb88f\" alt=\"Source: Banks’ 2024 earnings reports\" each bank’s cost-to-income ratio (CIR).</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">A lower CIR implies that the bank is more efficient in controlling its expenses.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">Here, OCBC is the winner as well with the lowest CIR for both 4Q 2024 and 2024.</p><h2 id=\"id_3840628272\" style=\"text-align: start;\">Winner: OCBC</h2><h2 id=\"h-return-on-equity-roe\" style=\"text-align: start;\">Return on equity (ROE)</h2><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/746220afd9703e4ad89c314ce8b6164b\" alt=\"Source: Banks’ 2024 equity, or ROE, is arguably one of the more important financial metrics used to assess the profitability of a bank.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">DBS had the highest ROE of the trio by far at 18% for both 2023 and 2024, with UOB and OCBC sharing an ROE of 13.7% for 2024.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">Even for both 3Q 2024 and 4Q 2024, DBS demonstrated that it had the strongest ROE among the three banks.</p><h2 id=\"id_4221928738\" style=\"text-align: start;\">Winner: DBS</h2><h2 id=\"h-non-performing-loans-npl-ratio\" style=\"text-align: start;\">Non-performing loans (NPL) ratio</h2><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/3f560b414192a74ded8cd317f87e7a6c\" alt=\"Source: Banks’ 2024 earnings reports\" title=\"Source: Banks’ 2024 earnings reports\" tg-width=\"845\" tg-height=\"332\"/><span>Source: Banks’ 2024 earnings reports</span></p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">Next up, we have the non-performing loans (NPL) ratio which measures the proportion of a bank’s loan book that is expected to turn sour.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">The lower this ratio is, the better, as it means that the bank’s loan book is of high-quality with a lower risk of defaults.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">OCBC takes the cake here with an NPL ratio that dipped below 1% for 2024.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">OCBC has also maintained its NPL ratio from 3Q 2024 to 4Q 2024, unlike DBS which saw its NPL ratio worsen slightly from 1% to 1.1%. </p><h2 id=\"id_714368619\" style=\"text-align: start;\">Winner: OCBC</h2><h2 id=\"h-dividend-yield\" style=\"text-align: start;\">Dividend yield</h2><p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://community-static.tradeup.com/news/f2d427186cde3c4ea31d9b47484d046c\" alt=\"Source: start;\">Income investors should sit up when it comes to this next metric – dividend yield.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">All three banks upped their final and total dividends for 2024 in light of their strong results.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">The table above shows that OCBC had the highest dividend yield of the three at 5.9% but this only tells part of the story.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">All three banks declared some sort of special dividend to pay out their excess capital.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">The table above does NOT include the special dividend for DBS and UOB as DBS declared a “capital return dividend” of S$0.15 per share per quarter while UOB declared a special dividend of S$0.50 to be paid out in two tranches.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">Therefore, if you include this additional dividend, DBS will pay out a total of S$3 for 2025, giving it a forward dividend yield of 6.5%.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">UOB’s forward dividend yield will increase to 6% if the S$0.50 additional dividend is included.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">Hence, DBS will have the highest dividend yield of the three if we include the additional dividends.</p><h2 id=\"id_2695259362\" style=\"text-align: start;\">Winner: DBS</h2><h2 id=\"h-valuation\" style=\"text-align: start;\">Valuation</h2><p gains of 27.7% and 28.4%, respectively.The impressive share price gains were not without good reason.All three banks reported record profits for 2024 and also upped their dividends along the way.Investors may find it tough to filter out which bank to buy as the trio reported solid results.Let’s break down each component of the banks’ earnings and financial metrics to see which bank qualifies as the best buy.Note: UOB only disclosed its second half of 2024 (2H 2024) metrics while both DBS and OCBC disclosed quarterly metrics.FinancialsSource: Banks’ 2024 earnings reportsLet’s start with each bank’s financials, or more specifically, its income and profits.DBS is the standout winner here with a double-digit, 10.5% year-on-year increase in its total income.The strong result was because of a 5% year-on-year improvement in DBS’s net interest income to S$15 billion.For OCBC, the year-on-year increase in its NII was just 1% while UOB saw flat NII for 2024.All three banks, however, posted healthy year-on-year growth in their fee income.In terms of net profit, DBS saw the highest year-on-year increase of the three banks at 12.2%.Winner: DBSNet interest margins (NIMs) and loan booksSource: Banks’ 2024 earnings reportsNext, we move on to each bank’s NIM, which is a measure of the spread between a bank’s deposit rate and its lending rate.In short, a larger NIM means that the bank is earning a wider spread, which in turn benefits its NII.We also take a look at whether each bank managed to grow its loan book.OCBC has the highest NIM of the three banks at 2.2% for 2024, and its NIM also equalled DBS for 4Q 2024 at 2.15%.However, DBS saw the gentlest year-on-year decline in its NIM at just 0.02 percentage points (ppt) for 2024, compared to UOB’s 0.06 ppt and OCBC’s 0.08 ppt.OCBC also saw a sharp year-on-year fall in its 4Q 2024 NIM of 0.14 ppt.As for loan growth, OCBC registered the highest loan growth at 7.6% year on year while DBS saw the smallest at just assess the profitability of a bank.DBS had the highest ROE of the trio by far at 18% for both 2023 and 2024, with UOB and OCBC sharing an ROE of 13.7% for 2024.Even for both 3Q 2024 and 4Q 2024, DBS demonstrated that it had the strongest ROE among the three banks.Winner: DBSNon-performing loans (NPL) ratioSource: Banks’ 2024 earnings reportsNext up, we have the non-performing loans (NPL) ratio which measures the proportion of a bank’s loan book that is expected to turn sour.The lower this ratio is, the better, as it means that the bank’s loan book is of high-quality with a lower risk of defaults.OCBC takes the cake here with an NPL ratio that dipped below 1% for 2024.OCBC has also maintained its NPL ratio from 3Q 2024 to 4Q 2024, unlike DBS which saw its NPL ratio worsen slightly and total dividends for 2024 in light of their strong results.The table above shows that OCBC had the highest dividend yield of the three at 5.9% but this only tells part of the story.All three banks declared some sort of special dividend to pay out their excess capital.The table above does NOT include the special dividend for DBS and UOB as DBS declared a “capital return dividend” of S$0.15 per share per quarter while UOB declared a special dividend of S$0.50 to be paid out in two tranches.Therefore, if you include this additional dividend, DBS will pay out a total of S$3 for 2025, giving it a forward dividend yield of 6.5%.UOB’s forward dividend yield will increase to 6% if the S$0.50 additional dividend is included.Hence, DBS will have the highest dividend yield of the three if we Through internal investments and acquisitions, the company has built up capabilities to build the payloads (satellites, solar cells, and space pods) for its commercial customers. Space systems revenue has grown at a rapid rate in the last few years and now makes up the majority of Rocket Lab&#39;s overall revenue.</p><p>The key is the flywheel that gets built with all these capabilities. Rocket Lab is one of the few places a customer can go to get a reliable launch into orbit, making it much easier for the company to upsell these customers on its space systems capabilities. The government thinks it is a promising business as well, with Rocket Lab recently signing a $24 million incentive agreement as part of the new CHIPS Act to build semiconductors for space systems.</p><p>Over the long term, investors should watch two developments for Rocket Lab to further its vertical integration ambitions. You are sitting on some fantastic gains at the moment. That doesn&#39;t make the stock a buy today, though.</p><p>At a market cap pushing through $12 billion, Rocket Lab trades at a price-to-sales ratio (P/S) of 34, more than 10x the market average. Yes, Rocket Lab has a lot of growth potential, but this is a capital-intensive low-margin business that does not deserve to trade at over 30x sales.</p><p>To illustrate this point, let&#39;s perform some forward-looking estimates for Rocket Lab. In 10 years, if the company achieves all of its ambitions with minimal hiccups (an optimistic scenario), I could see the company&#39;s revenue growing from its current annual figure of $364 million to $5 billion. With a 26% gross profit margin, it is reasonable to assume Rocket Lab can hit 10% net income margins once it scales, or $500 million in earnings on $5 billion in revenue.</p><p>Consider that $500 million in earnings versus the current market cap of $12.34 billion is a price-to-earnings ratio (P/E) of 25. That is not much lower than the average <strong>S&amp;P 500</strong> P/E ratio today, and that would be Rocket Lab&#39;s earnings power in 10 years under the most optimistic assumptions.</p><p>Stay away from Rocket Lab stock right now. Currently valued at $445 billion, the semiconductor giant is already almost halfway there.</p><p>Nvidia&#39;s GPUs, historically the realm of high-end video game PCs, are finding use in data centers creating and running artificial intelligence software. AI is in the early stages of deployment, just now reaching that convergence of usefulness and affordability that makes it compelling for industries of all sorts. Building on its lead here, Nvidia has launched new chip types outside of GPUs to address other parts of the modern business data center.</p><p>If its impressive hardware weren&#39;t enough, Nvidia is also early on in developing a cloud-based software business too. AI software won&#39;t only help Nvidia sustain its growth momentum but could also lift profit margins higher as well. This is a premium-priced stock at 57 times trailing 12-month free cash flow, but this is a great company to buy and hold for the next decade if you&#39;re looking for a way to bet on the AI industry.</p><h2>Block: A depressed fintech name with international potential</h2><p>Block (formerly Square) was a high-flying financial technology leader just a year ago. Now, it trades for just over seven times enterprise value (just over $35 billion as of this writing) to trailing-12-month gross profit ($4.75 billion). The market is feeling particularly ho-hum on Block.</p><p>The punishment isn&#39;t completely unwarranted. Block is trying to develop the <b>Bitcoin </b>blockchain network, and it isn&#39;t clear if Bitcoin will ever have a future as a means of enabling transactions on the internet. It also paid a pretty penny for buy-now-pay-later company Afterpay early this year, and it will take time to see if the combined fintechs are worth more together than they would have been on their own.</p><p>Personally, though, I like Block&#39;s plan of attack with Afterpay. Block needs a way to connect its Square merchant services ecosystem with the more consumer-facing Cash App. Afterpay could act as the rails between the two and create a truly two-sided network that keeps merchants and individuals highly engaged -- and makes Block more profitable over time. And at 39 times trailing-12-month free cash flow, Block&#39;s growth potential looks severely underappreciated right now.</p><h2>Twilio: Communications head for the cloud</h2><p>The pandemic accelerated large organizations&#39; migration to the cloud, which was especially apparent with cloud-based communications tools. <b>Zoom Video Communications </b>got all the early attention, but Twilio has been the more enduring growth story as Zoom&#39;s expansion has decelerated.</p><p>Twilio&#39;s secret is it has a wide range of tools available for businesses to integrate into their operations -- from text and email to website chatbots to internet-based phone and video calling. Twilio&#39;s latest efforts have been to add customer data analytics to its platform, helping businesses understand when and how to stay in touch with customers.</p><p>Twilio thinks it can sustain about a 30% organic growth rate (which excludes acquisitions) for the foreseeable future. The only problem is that Twilio hasn&#39;t generated a profit yet. This is partially by design as the company spends heavily to maximize its rate of expansion, but a rising interest rate environment doesn&#39;t look favorably on stocks like this.</p><p>Nevertheless, Twilio expects to generate adjusted operating profit by 2023 and currently trades for a meager 3.6 times enterprise value to trailing-12-month revenue. If the business continues to grow at a rapid pace and reaches profitability next year, there is a lot of upside here.</p><h2>Crocs: Get a top-trending brand among young generations for a steal</h2><p>To mix up the tech-heavy stock list above, I also really like Crocs stock right now. Yes, Crocs, the maker of the goofy foam clogs. Whether or not you like them, this is a popular brand among young people. Crocs ranked in the top 10 shoe brands among Generation Z (early 20-somethings), according to <b>Piper Sandler</b>&#39;s &#34;Taking Stock With Teens&#34; Spring 2022 report. And seemingly out of nowhere came Hey Dude, also now a Top 10 shoe brand among teens according to Piper Sandler&#39;s report. Hey Dude is the casual shoe brand Crocs just acquired.</p><p>Crocs&#39; comfy kicks are growing fast (sales have more than doubled over the last three years), but the stock has been beaten down some 55% so far in 2022. Inflation is hurting profits in the short term, and Crocs had to take on significant debt to purchase Hey Dude. The company reported nearly $2.9 billion in debt at the end of the first quarter.</p><p>But if Crocs can maintain its shoe industry-best operating profit margin and keep growing, this stock is a deep value.
