said Robert Pavlik, senior portfolio manager at Dakota Wealth in Fairfield, Connecticut. &#34;How they position it for the next meeting is key, because so many people are expecting a downturn in the economy.&#34;</p><p>Beyond CPI, investors are eyeing first-quarter reporting season, which surges from the starting gate on Friday with results from three major banks, Citigroup Inc (C.N), JPMorgan Chase &amp; Co (JPM.N) and Wells Fargo &amp; Co (WFC.N).</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">Analysts expect aggregate first-quarter S&amp;P 500 earnings falling 5.2% year-on-year, a stark reversal from the 1.4% annual growth seen at the beginning of the quarter.</p><p style=\"text-align: start;\">The Dow Jones Industrial Average (.DJI) rose 98.27 points, or 0.29%, to 33,684.79; While there were other EVs before Tesla (they&#39;ve actually existed for almost 200 years), it was the Roadster that changed the auto industry due to the range of its battery, speed, acceleration, and price that made it comparable to gas-powered cars.</p><p>That first-mover status boosted Tesla to the forefront of the electric car industry, a place it remains in with a 64% market share, as of the end of the third quarter. While that&#39;s down from the 75% it held back in the first quarter, it&#39;s also a natural consequence of so many competitors entering the market.</p><p>The Model Y and Model 3 have sold a combined 347,000 vehicles so far this year, far ahead of <b>Ford</b>&#39;s No. 2 Mustang Mach-E at 28,000. In fact, Tesla owns four of the top six slots (<b>General Motors&#39;</b> Chevy Bolt is fourth with 22,000 vehicles sold).</p><p>However, <b>Bank of America</b> recently issued a report indicating its analysts expect both Ford and GM to surpass Tesla&#39;s market share, which is forecast to fall to just 11% in North America by 2025.</p><p>Tesla is currently the big fish in a small pond. In just a few years time, however, EVs will equal 10% of the entire auto market and the two big automakers&#39; EVs are cheaper than Tesla&#39;s and appeal to a different car buyer.</p><h2>Built on a shaky foundation</h2><p>Despite the expected growth in demand for EVs, Tesla and other manufacturers have a number of hurdles they&#39;re going to need to surmount that could make achieving their goals feasible.</p><p>First, demand is propped up by tax credits, and should they go away; sales could falter. The so-called Inflation Reduction Act passed in August created a new array of incentives for the next few years, but it may not be fiscally responsible to keep them going indefinitely.</p><p>Second, the electric grid will be severely stressed from all the electric cars plugging in to charge and will need to be overhauled. That may not be feasible or cheap to accomplish as it will result in large costs for generating, transmitting, and storing power. Even as California was announcing a ban on fossil fuel-powered vehicles by 2035 this past summer, it was also asking EV owners not to charge their cars to help conserve energy.</p><p>Third, EV makers face soaring costs for finite resources, particularly for the batteries needed to power their vehicles. Lithium, for example, a key component of EV batteries, currently costs around $80,000 a tonne, or 1,000% more than it did two years ago.</p><p>EVs also require substantial amounts of graphite, cobalt, rare earth metals, and nickel, and the total global production of these metals cannot match demand for them.</p><h2>A long road ahead</h2><p>While there is a search happening for alternatives to using different materials to power EVs and to upgrading and overhauling the electric grid, car manufacturers may face difficulty in seeing the growth they forecast.</p><p>Tesla itself is having a tough time selling cars in China. Although sales in November were up 90% year over year, it was a result of cutting prices and providing greater incentives to buyers. The 100,000 vehicles sold was also half of what Chinese rival BYD sold. Competition in Europe will be fierce, too.</p><p>Musk has also been selling Tesla stock, selling 19.5 million shares in November and another 20 million or so in December, likely to help finance his acquisition of Twitter.</p><p>Over the long haul, though, Tesla doesn&#39;t seem like it&#39;s going to run off the road and still has plenty of opportunity for growth. Yet it would require a near tripling in value for its stock to hit a $1 trillion valuation. trillion-dollar valuation. As recently as April, it was part of a tiny but exclusive club of companies that had broken through the threshold. Today that club has just three members: <b>Apple</b>, <b>Microsoft</b>, and <b>Alphabet</b>.</p><p>Since then, Tesla&#39;s stock has fallen hard, losing nearly 60% of its value, and some are actively rooting for it to fail.</p><p>While Tesla has its fans who seemingly wear rose-colored glasses about any of its flaws, the critics don green eyeshades tinted a few shades too dark that blind them to the EV maker&#39;s enduring potential.</p><p>Somewhere between those extremes lies the truth about Tesla, so let&#39;s see if there is any hope the premier EV stock can be a $1 trillion company again.</p><h2>First off the line</h2><p>There&#39;s no doubt Elon Musk and Tesla brought electric vehicles into the mainstream. While there were other EVs before Tesla (they&#39;ve actually existed for almost 200 years), it was the Roadster that changed the auto industry due to the range of its battery, speed, acceleration, and price that made it comparable to gas-powered cars.</p><p>That first-mover status boosted Tesla to the forefront of the electric car industry, a place it remains in with a 64% market share, as of the end of the third quarter. While that&#39;s down from the 75% it held back in the first quarter, it&#39;s also a natural consequence of so many competitors entering the market.</p><p>The Model Y and Model 3 have sold a combined 347,000 vehicles so far this year, far ahead of <b>Ford</b>&#39;s No. 2 Mustang Mach-E at 28,000. In fact, Tesla owns four of the top six slots (<b>General Motors&#39;</b> Chevy Bolt is fourth with 22,000 vehicles sold).</p><p>However, <b>Bank of America</b> recently issued a report indicating its analysts expect both Ford and GM to surpass Tesla&#39;s market share, which is forecast to fall to just 11% in North America by 2025.</p><p>Tesla is currently the big fish in a small pond. In just a few years time, however, EVs will equal 10% of the entire auto market and the two big automakers&#39; EVs are cheaper than Tesla&#39;s and appeal to a different car buyer.</p><h2>Built on a shaky foundation</h2><p>Despite the expected growth in demand for EVs, Tesla and other manufacturers have a number of hurdles they&#39;re going to need to surmount that could make achieving their goals feasible.</p><p>First, demand is propped up by tax credits, and should they go away; sales could falter. The so-called Inflation Reduction Act passed in August created a new array of incentives for the next few years, but it may not be fiscally responsible to keep them going indefinitely.</p><p>Second, the electric grid will be severely stressed from all the electric cars plugging in to charge and will need to be overhauled. That may not be feasible or cheap to accomplish as it will result in large costs for generating, transmitting, and storing power. Even as California was announcing a ban on fossil fuel-powered vehicles by 2035 this past summer, it was also asking EV owners not to charge their cars to help conserve energy.</p><p>Third, EV makers face soaring costs for finite resources, particularly for the batteries needed to power their vehicles. Lithium, for example, a key component of EV batteries, currently costs around $80,000 a tonne, or 1,000% more than it did two years ago.</p><p>EVs also require substantial amounts of graphite, cobalt, rare earth metals, and nickel, and the total global production of these metals cannot match demand for them.</p><h2>A long road ahead</h2><p>While there is a search happening for alternatives to using different materials to power EVs and to upgrading and overhauling the electric grid, car manufacturers may face difficulty in seeing the growth they forecast.</p><p>Tesla itself is having a tough time selling cars in China. Although sales in November were up 90% year over year, it was a result of cutting prices and providing greater incentives to buyers. The 100,000 vehicles sold was also half of what Chinese rival BYD sold. Competition in Europe will be fierce, too.</p><p>Musk has also been selling Tesla stock, selling 19.5 million shares in November and another 20 million or so in December, likely to help finance his acquisition of Twitter.</p><p>Over the long haul, though, Tesla doesn&#39;t seem like it&#39;s going to run off the road and still has plenty of opportunity for growth. Yet it would require a near tripling in value for its stock to hit a $1 trillion valuation. Today that club has just three members: Apple, Microsoft, and Alphabet.Since then, Tesla's stock has fallen hard, losing nearly 60% of its value, and some are actively rooting for it to fail.While Tesla has its fans who seemingly wear rose-colored glasses about any of its flaws, the critics don green eyeshades tinted a few shades too dark that blind them to the EV maker's enduring potential.Somewhere between those extremes lies the truth about Tesla, so let's see if there is any hope the premier EV stock can be a $1 trillion company again.First off the lineThere's no doubt Elon Musk and Tesla brought electric vehicles into the mainstream. While there were other EVs before Tesla (they've actually existed for almost 200 years), it was the Roadster that changed the auto industry due to the range of its battery, speed, acceleration, and price that made it comparable to gas-powered cars.That first-mover status boosted Tesla to the forefront of the electric car industry, a place it remains in with a 64% market share, as of the end of the third quarter. While that's down from the 75% it held back in the first quarter, it's also a natural consequence of so many competitors entering the market.The Model Y and Model 3 have sold a combined 347,000 vehicles so far this year, far ahead of Ford's No. 2 Mustang Mach-E at 28,000. In fact, Tesla owns four of the top six slots (General Motors' Chevy Bolt is fourth with 22,000 vehicles sold).However, Bank of America recently issued a report indicating its analysts expect both Ford and GM to surpass Tesla's market share, which is forecast to fall to just 11% in North America by 2025.Tesla is currently the big fish in a small pond. In just a few years time, however, EVs will equal 10% of the entire auto market and the two big automakers' EVs are cheaper than Tesla's and appeal to a different car buyer.Built on a shaky foundationDespite the expected growth in demand for EVs, Tesla and other manufacturers have a number of hurdles they're going to need to surmount that could make achieving their goals feasible.First, demand is propped up by tax credits, and should they go away; sales could falter. The so-called Inflation Reduction Act passed in August created a new array of incentives for the next few years, but it may not be fiscally responsible to keep them going indefinitely.Second, the electric grid will be severely stressed from all the electric cars plugging in to charge and will need to be overhauled. That may not be feasible or cheap to accomplish as it will result in large costs for generating, transmitting, and storing power. Even as California was announcing a ban on fossil fuel-powered vehicles by 2035 this past summer, it was also asking EV owners not to charge their cars to help conserve energy.Third, EV makers face soaring costs for finite resources, particularly for the batteries needed to power their vehicles. Lithium, for example, a key component of EV batteries, currently costs around $80,000 a tonne, or 1,000% more than it did two years ago.EVs also require substantial amounts of graphite, cobalt, rare earth metals, and nickel, and the total global production of these metals cannot match demand for them.A long road aheadWhile there is a search happening for alternatives to using different materials to power EVs and to upgrading and overhauling the electric grid, car manufacturers may face difficulty in seeing the growth they forecast.Tesla itself is having a tough time selling cars in China. Although sales in November were up 90% year over year, it was a result of cutting prices and providing greater incentives to buyers. The 100,000 vehicles sold was also half of what Chinese rival BYD sold. Competition in Europe will be fierce, too.Musk has also been selling Tesla stock, selling 19.5 million shares in November and another 20 million or so in December, likely to help finance his acquisition of Twitter.Over the long haul, though, Tesla doesn't seem like it's going to run off the road and still has plenty of opportunity for growth. Yet it would require a near tripling in value for its stock to hit a $1 trillion valuation. Let&#39;s see what she may be seeing in these former market darlings that have fallen on hard times.</p><h2>Shopify</h2><p>Announcing a stock split doesn&#39;t guarantee that a stock will pop. Shares of Shopify plummeted 37% last month, despite announcing plans for a 10-for-1 split. Like many high-profile growth stocks, shares of the popular e-commerce platform provider have had a rough run in the market.</p><p>April was bad, and May isn&#39;t shaping up to be any better. The stock plummeted 15% on Thursday after a disappointing financial report. Revenue decelerated through the first three months of this year, clocking in with a mere 22% year-over-year advance. Rising costs obliterated the bottom line; earnings came in 71% below what analysts were targeting.</p><p>The tailwinds that helped Shopify deliver jaw-dropping growth until recently weren&#39;t going to last forever. However, this week&#39;s surprising shortfall on both ends of the income statement is both problematic and opportunistic. The financial update wasn&#39;t encouraging, but the stock now finds itself 77% below where it was at its November peak. The forward-thinking e-commerce solution that lets merchants of all sizes easily sell their wares across emerging social media platforms and their own digital storefront hasn&#39;t lost its relevancy. Shopify should recover from this setback.</p><h2>Roku</h2><p>Another company that has shed nearly 80% of its peak value but is still growing is Roku. The pioneer of video streaming on TV is a leading in an expanding niche. There were 61.3 million homes leaning on Roku by the end of March, and these are <i>active</i> accounts in every sense of the term. The average account is streaming nearly 3.8 hours a day on the platform.</p><p>We&#39;ve seen Roku&#39;s audience and total hours streamed grow 14% over the past year, silencing bearish arguments that folks will turn off their TVs and enjoy the great outdoors as the COVID-19 landscape improves following the vaccinations introduced last year. Advertisers also know that Roku consumers are worth reaching. Average revenue per user is up 34% over the past year.</p><p>Supply chain issues have slowed the production of its dongles, but Roku has enough deals in place with smart TV manufacturers to be the factory installed operating system of choice for many leading brands. After breaking through with a profit last year, analysts don&#39;t see a return to positive net income until 2024. It&#39;s not an ideal situation, but as long as Roku&#39;s audience keeps growing -- and those cradling the Roku remote controls keep watching -- the stock should eventually get back on track.</p><h2>Sea Limited</h2><p>Some companies are lucky to dominate <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> niche, but Sea Limited is a giant in three important industries. The Singapore-based speedster is a major player in e-commerce, online gaming, and fintech.</p><p>It&#39;s not firing on all cylinders right now. It sees direct entertainment bookings -- basically its gaming arm -- declining sharply this year. It&#39;s been a challenging year for the online gaming market, particularly in Asia. However, its now larger e-commerce segment is expected to see its revenue soar 76%. Its smaller fintech division is expected to see its top line climb 155% this year.</p><p>Growth will slow at Sea Limited this year from the 106% year-over-year burst it posted the last time it reported quarterly results. Sea Limited will have a financial update in two weeks. Analysts see revenue growth slowing to a 37% clip this year and a 35% pace in 2023, but that&#39;s still respectable for a company of Sea Limited&#39;s size.</p><p>Shopify, Roku, and Sea Limited have all seen their shares fall by at least 77% since peaking last year. Yet they continue to be strong growth stocks, delivering healthy year-over-year growth right now. The stock plummeted 15% on Thursday after a disappointing financial report. Revenue decelerated through the first three months of this year, clocking in with a mere 22% year-over-year advance. Rising costs obliterated the bottom line; earnings came in 71% below what analysts were targeting.The tailwinds that helped Shopify deliver jaw-dropping growth until recently weren't going to last forever. However, this week's surprising shortfall on both ends of the income statement is both problematic and opportunistic. The financial update wasn't encouraging, but the stock now finds itself 77% below where it was at its November peak. Advertisers also know that Roku consumers are worth reaching. Average revenue per user is up 34% over the past year.Supply chain issues have slowed the production of its dongles, but Roku has enough deals in place with smart TV manufacturers to be the factory installed operating system of choice for many leading brands. It sees direct entertainment bookings -- basically its gaming arm -- declining sharply this year. It's been a challenging year for the online gaming market, particularly in Asia. However, its now larger e-commerce segment is expected to see its revenue soar 76%. Its smaller fintech division is expected to see its top line climb 155% this year.Growth will slow at Sea Limited this year from the 106% year-over-year burst it posted the last time it reported quarterly results. Sea Limited will have a financial update in two weeks. Analysts see revenue growth slowing to a 37% clip this year and a 35% pace in 2023, but that's still respectable for a company of Sea Limited's size.Shopify, Roku, and Sea Limited have all seen their shares fall by at least 77% since peaking last year. The indicator in SPDR S&amp;P 500 Trust ETF (SPY) peaked at 70.4% in October 2020, and that was a new all-time high. The Covid-19 stimulus package was the driver of the rally. Since, the indicator has crashed to 53.4%, and it&#39;s on a steep downtrend as traders sell the rips rather than buying the dips.</p><p>Note that this indicator reached a low below 45 around the dot com top, and slowly increased during the bear market as traders and investors were accumulating shares by buying dips. This indicator also fell precipitously during the GFC bear market to about 48. The last two bear market observations imply that either the top is still forming, or it will take a while for a bottom to form. In either case, there is an indication of additional downside. Caveat emptor: the sample of only two past bear markets is small and any conclusions maybe not be significant. However, this is true with all indicators, technical or based on macro, and it&#39;s all we have. This is one reason we look at several indicators and try to limit confirmation bias.</p><h3><b>NASDAQ-100 top Dow-30 Ratio </b></h3><p>This is an interesting indicator, but with a sample of one. As a result of the relative outperformance of Dow-30 stocks (DJI), the ratio plunged during the bear market to 0.11 and then started uptrending with recovering tech stocks.</p><p>On December 1, 2021, the NASDAQ-100/Dow-30 ratio made a new all-time high around 0.47. Soon after the correction in tech stocks started.</p><p>Note that in mid-May 2000, the ratio rebounded but this was a bull trap. This may be repeated this time. Again, as with the previous indicator, we have a minimum sample size. But besides the sample sizes, we also look at the severity of the indicator signals. A single indicator may not reflect reality, but several of them together may provide good hints. The rally in prices continued due to reflexivity and peaked in December 2021. Afterward, reversion to the mean started and this process of valuation adjustment is still ongoing and will probably continue for a while.</p><p>The NASDAQ-100 could eventually test the upper one-standard deviation line. The level will depend on the speed of the correction: if the correction is fast, the first support level could be around 10,400 but if it&#39;s a slow process, the level could be higher and around 11,000.</p><p>Then the question is, whether there will be a reversion towards the mean around 7,100. A complete reversion will be devastating and will equate to an additional 44% drop from current levels. No one knows what will happen and a new regime may emerge with a new higher mean. Since, the indicator has crashed to 53.4%, and it's on a steep downtrend as traders sell the rips rather than buying the dips.Note that this indicator reached a low below 45 around the dot com top, and slowly increased during the bear market as traders and investors were accumulating shares by buying dips. This indicator also fell precipitously during the GFC bear market to about 48. The last two bear market observations imply that either the top is still forming, or it will take a while for a bottom to form. In either case, there is an indication of additional downside. The unemployment rate dropped to 3.6%, a new two-year low while average hourly earnings rose 5.6% on a year-over-year basis.</p><p>The report heightened expectations that the central bank is likely to become more aggressive in raising interest rates as it seeks to curb inflation as it unwinds its easy monetary policy.</p><p>&#34;Job gains were broad, more people are going back to the office,&#34; said Brian Jacobsen, senior investment strategist at Allspring Global Investments in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin.</p><p>&#34;If other data between now and the next Fed meeting stay this rosy, the Fed will likely feel comfortable hiking by 50 basis points and announcing an aggressive rundown of its balance sheet.&#34;</p><p>The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 139.92 points, or 0.4%, to 34,818.27, the S&amp;P 500 gained 15.45 points, or 0.34%, to 4,545.86 and the Nasdaq Composite added 40.98 points, or 0.29%, to 14,261.50.</p><p>The defensive real estate, utilities and consumer staples were the best performing sectors on the day, with each rising more than 1%.</p><p>For the week, the Dow slipped 0.1%, the S&amp;P edged up 0.1% and the Nasdaq advanced 0.7%.</p><p>Expectations for a 50-basis point interest rate hike at the central bank&#39;s May meeting stand at 73.3%, according to CME&#39;s FedWatch Tool.</p><p>At its March meeting, the Fed raised rates by 25 basis 25 basis points, its first hike since 2018, and a host of central bank policymakers have indicated they are prepared for bigger rate hikes.</p><p>Chicago Federal Reserve President Charles Evans said on Friday he does not see a big risk in using &#34;some&#34; half-point rate hikes to bring borrowing costs to neutral sooner as long as the objective was not to raise rates much faster and push them higher.</p><p>Other data on Friday showed U.S. manufacturing activity unexpectedly slowed in March, although it remained firmly in expansion territory, as tight supply chains continued to put upward pressure on input prices.</p><p>In the wake of the payrolls report, U.S. Treasury yields jumped and a closely watched part of the yield curve between two-year and 10-year notes, seen by many as a reliable indicator of a recession, inverted for the third time this week.</p><p>The S&amp;P 500 closed out the first quarter on Thursday with its biggest quarterly decline since the COVID-19 pandemic in the U.S. was reaching full swing on concerns about rising prices, fueled further by the war in Ukraine, and the Fed&#39;s response could slow economic growth. However, stocks rebounded somewhat in March, as the benchmark index gained 3.6%.</p><p>April tends to be a strong month for stocks, with its last monthly decline in 2012.
